Jacksonville Jaguars MUST FIRE Doug Pederson, Bengals are LOST & Steelers MUST START Justin Fields

The Buffalo Bills dismantled the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football and at this point the Jaguars need to fire head coach Doug Pederson as the team looks soulless. Also, Josh Allen looks like he has his best supporting cast yet! In the second Monday night matchup, the Cincinnati Bengals defense is a major problem, but the 'Disease of Me' is destroying the locker room. Kind of like how Jayden Daniels destroyed the Bengals on his way to pushing the Washington Commanders to 2-1. Finally, Justin Fields has the Pittsburgh Steelers undefeated at 3-0 and no matter what happens with Russell Wilson, Fields needs to remain the starter. Geno Smith also has his Seattle Seahawks at 3-0, but they have not played the strongest opponents and it is worth wondering whether they can keep it going.

Lauren, we had a double dose to Monday night football games and they were very, very interesting for very different reasons. We're gonna start with that Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars matchup where Buffalo absolutely throttled Jacksonville 47 to 10. And look, I told you you're gonna hear from Tony Wiggins about some Jacksonville Jaguars information, but I'm not gonna make you wait until the afternoon. Let's hear from Tony from Locked On Jax now. - Welp, W-E-L-P. Welp, it's about that time, it's about time for here's the role here in Jacksonville. I'm Tony Wiggins with Locked On Jaguars. Everybody should get fired. Anybody of substance should be gone immediately and if they aren't gone immediately, it's just window dressing. This is the worst game I've ever seen the Jaguars play, especially a game where they really, really needed to play better. 47 to 10 lost at Buffalo and they were lifeless when they came out of the locker room today. Doug Peterson obviously has lost this team. He can't get it back. There's nothing that he can say or do that can change the fact that this team has under achieved considering the money that they spent and all of the high draft picks that they've had. Everyone should be disappointed, including Sean Conne. This is an embarrassment and I don't think there's any coming back from it. The Jaguars lose 47 to 10 at Buffalo and it's gonna get worse. They have to go to Houston. Tune in the Locked On Jaguars, we're at your team every day. We always thank you for making us your first listen. - Well, you could tell that Tony is awfully, awfully disappointed and he should be. Look, the reality here is the Jacksonville Jaguars have playoff aspirations. They're a team that was one game away from the playoffs last year. They win a playoff game the year before that and Trevor Lawrence is the crown prince of the NFL and so many people believe in him and he looks lost as well. He, that interception he threw where he way over through Brian Thomas Jr. It's just terrible. And Tony pointed it out himself that there's some finger pointing and there are some blame going around and some bickering going on in week two. After this kind of loss, it's only gonna get worse and I agree with Tony here. Doug Peterson has to go. I think Trent bulky is a big part of the blame as well here but the Jaguars are just kind of a lost football team and they're under achieving for the talent they have and when that happens, people at the top gotta go. - Yeah, it just feels like an organizational issue from the very top to the very bottom. And that's so hard to fix. You can swap out general managers and head coaches but they've gone through this cycle two or three times and eventually you kind of have to look upstairs and who's the person who's hiring the general manager? You know, who's the person who's putting these people in the position? I mean, it then gets starts with the con family and the ownership group and then they've got, you know, their team president, like, they're not necessarily football people up there. You know, the cons have a lot of other business interests. They've got a soccer team and wrestling and stuff and their team president working baseball, you know, like these are not necessarily like football minded people. So you just wonder like, yeah, you can change GMs and head coaches but will anything change until the real decision makers change? Like it's a hopeless place to be for Jaguars fans. Yeah, it reminds me of when Tony Khan, the son of shotgun, who's all involved in the wrestling stuff was wearing the neck brace, like during the draft or whatever. Well, the team is wearing a neck brace right now, figuratively, like it is ugly out there. And the confusing thing for me, Lauren, is the jags. I just feel like they have a good roster. Like they have some good players. They have talent on the defense. It doesn't make, and it's hard to identify it like from a football conversation. It's hard to identify why they are as bad. They have lost eight straight games with Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. It just, it just seems like they're not as bad. There's something bigger than football going on with that team. Yeah, I mean, they have talent, but it feels like it's underachieving talent. I mean, I think they look at the Trevor Walker pick as like maybe an okay player, but not, you know, number one overall pick type. Not eight and Hutchinson, say that again. They're not eight and Hutchinson. That's a big mistake. They've had like Tony talking about all the resources they've invested in signing, you know, big contracts for Gabe Davis and Christian Kirk. Like these are players who are talented, but like they haven't met the amount of resource the Jaguars have invested in them. Like they're getting less than the full return on those investments. Even if those players aren't bad, they're not as good as the Jaguars needed them to be. And sure, some of that's probably coaching, but some of that might just be what those players are and getting to eager and investing too much and bringing them in. Yeah, well, whether it's the players that have been picked in how the resources have been used or whether it's how the players are deployed on the field, that's GM and that's coaching. And as Tony said, those people need to be held accountable and need to go. Now on the flip side of this game, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Lauren, I think at this time, it's not crazy to say that the Buffalo Bills have looked like the best team in the NFL through three weeks. They played a tough game with the Cardinals in week one, but they have throttled teams the past two weeks. I mean, do you think with the offensive line better than it's been for most of the Josh Allen era, with the defensive line really coming in to focus here with Gruso and with von Miller back to form, making a big sack in this game? Like, do you think that this is the year that the Buffalo Bills can get over the mountain? There feels to be something a little bit inverse to the Jaguars where the Buffalo Bills are sneezing more talent out of players that I don't think we expected to be as good. I mean, they lost a lot of big names on their defense and they've still been able to step up and play really, really well. And same thing, you know, at the receiver position, the big storyline all off season was, is Josh Allen going to have weapons? Is he going to be the same quarterback that he's been in the past without Stefan Diggs and without some of the other guys in that lineup? And it turns out, yeah, having a great offensive line and a really good front seven defense is what's most important in building in the trenches there. So I certainly need to admit, I was wrong about these Buffalo Bills. I thought they'd take a step back. I didn't think they would be this good. And I thought Josh Allen, that wouldn't revert back to being bad, but just wouldn't be nearly as good. But I think, you know, especially with, with all of the controversies surrounding, you know, Sean McDermott and fired offensive coordinators last year, just felt like maybe the coaching staff here was on its way out on a lame duck year and they found a way to dig deep and be a real advantage for the Bills in a way that's saving their jobs for sure. - Yeah, 100%. And do want to just take a moment and say, congratulations to Demar Hamlin who played well out there, got the interception, just really nice to see him playing well and getting some moment. That was a cool moment for Bills fans. And as just general NFL fans, that was a cool thing to see. But that wasn't the only Monday night football game that was a fantastic watch. The Cincinnati Bengals are a lost football team and Jaden Daniels looking absolutely fantastic. Today's edition of the Lockdown NFL podcast, talked about the first Monday night football match-up between the Jaguars and the Bills, where the Bills just beat the snot out of the Jaguars on national television. But now we got an even better game with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Washington commanders before we get into it. Thank you again for making the Lockdown NFL your first listen each and every day. It's your team every day here on the Lockdown podcast network. Make sure that you tune in in this afternoon for Tony Wiggins as he steps into the barbershop to chop up the best NFL conversations available. And he's probably going to talk a little bit about these match-ups. But Lauren, I know that the commanders moved to two and one and I know that Jaden Daniels looked fantastic and we will get there. But this Cincinnati Bengals team dropping to 0 and three, losing at home in prime time to this commanders team, there is an issue in Cincinnati. And I'm going to just throw it to my guy, Jake Lesco, from Lockdown Bengals to break it down. The Cincinnati Bengals defense simply isn't good enough. It's not good at anything right now. I'm Jake Lesco from the Lockdown Bengals podcast and the Bengals lose an embarrassing game to the Washington commanders. They don't get a single stop. And it comes down to the fact that their defensive line depleted by injury in their defense could not disrupt the passing game of the Washington commanders at all. The offense got mostly what they wanted throughout this game. They have their red zone issues. They're not perfect, but this game comes down to the defensive line's inability to disrupt Jaden Daniels and he was able to stand in there, essentially play seven on seven football. And the secondary couldn't hold up at all. They even stopped the run a little bit in this game, but could not stop the commanders at any point when it counted. And even if the offense puts up points, well, that's not good enough when you can't stop the commanders even once. - All right, listen, I got a couple of different things that I want to talk about with this game. This is the first time since 1940 that there wasn't a punt or a turnover in a game. I mean, insane game, 38 to 33 up and down. Not only that, but the Bengals basically didn't punt at every opportunity to score points, but didn't have an opportunity to win the game at the end, even though their offense was that successful. Jake talks about the defense and Jake is 100% right about that. The defense is not good enough for the Bengals. But I come back to the point that I've been making about this Cincinnati Bengals team throughout the entire first three weeks of this season. This locker room is the problem. The disease of me, Burrow got his money. T Higgins wanted pay, didn't get it. Jamar Chase wanted his money, didn't get it. Trey Hendrickson asked for a trade, didn't get it. This Bengals team is, I think, a little too selfish. Right now, I don't think they're playing for each other. And I think that shows up most on defense where you have to take more of a physical beating, where you have to tackle and you have to stay locked in and you have to play for each other more. There aren't a bunch of touchdown passes to keep guys afloat and happy. I think this Bengals team, yes, the defense isn't good enough, but I also think that the disease of me is hurting the Bengals because of all the money problems in that locker room. - I would have thought that the loss of Brian Callahan and his brother going to the Texans, he'll lose your offensive court entering offensive line coach would hurt this Buffalo, excuse me, this Cincinnati Bengals offense more than we've seen it hurt. But like they were able to move the ball pretty effectively against the commanders. They scored 33 points. And if it wasn't for a missed field goal and really a couple of drives that shouldn't have ended in field goals, I mean, they would have been right there in this shootout and despite everything else going wrong for them. So it's just surprising that the defense is the side of the ball. It is really completely fallen off because it's felt like Lou Amoretto their defense coordinator has been there for a long time. They've always been a pretty solid group at end. And it's not like they lost a ton of talent year over year. They tried to revamp that secondary and improve it. Like it was supposed to be a better Bengals defense and it's completely failed Joe Burrow and the offense. That's the side of the ball that lost talent and they can at least hold up there into the bargain. So it's just been kind of head scratching there. - Yeah, well, I think there are a couple of things that really stand out to me. Losing DJ reader, obviously is tough. And then Jesse Bates in the back end. Jesse Bates made me the best safety in the entire NFL and the Bengals didn't want to pay him. Look, at the end of the day, I'm from that area and the number one complaint about the Bengals for most of my lifetime has been cheap ownership. Now you've got to give the Bengals credit. They have bolstered up their scouting staff and spent more money now that Katie Blackburn, the daughter of Mike Brown has been more in charge. They built the indoor facility. I think the Bengals have done things to try to spend more money and invest more in the team. But at the end of the day, the Bengals have gone cheap on trying to pay some of these top end players. And I think it just, again, it's poison in the drink like it's blood in the water. And I think some of the players in the locker room probably aren't happy with the team in the way they're treating some of the best players. And Jesse Bates, a guy who they really could use in their secondary right now could be an example of that. And he's a guy who got paid by Atlanta and has looked fantastic in Atlanta as well. So you have to wonder about that on the flip side. Jaden Daniels. I mean, what an incredible performance from the rookie. He only had two, he had more touchdowns on the night than he had incompletions, 21 for 23, 250 passing yards, two passing touchdowns through some bombs to Terry McCorran. He ran for 39 more yards. He has looked like the best rookie quarterback in the NFL. So far this year. And Lauren, I know this is a national NFL show, but as a guy who is covering Caleb Williams, I have to ask you, I'm contractually obligated with the locked on shadowy figures behind me, telling me it must happen. Do you feel any buyer's remorse right now that the Bears took Caleb Williams instead of Jaden Daniels? - I think the real buyer's remorse for the Chicago Bears is not in the quarterback, but it's the offensive coordinator paired with said quarterback. I think Cliff Kingsbury has done a really good job of tailoring an offense to Jaden Daniels and really opening things up for him, letting him fire those shots down field while also kind of setting up some of the easy underneath stuff for him there that it just has been a really nice pairing for them. The Bears did interview Cliff Kingsbury to be their offensive coordinator. Cliff Kingsbury did coach Caleb Williams at USC last season. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yours fans would have been mad if they had hired Cliff Kingsbury. I'm not saying that that's exactly the solution for them, but more so the Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron for the Seahawks felt like he and Caleb haven't quite found the right mixture of what works for him versus what they want the system to do and trying to put players in the best position to be successful whereas Cliff has kind of done it right away. So I think there's still a lot of faith in Caleb he's played, he's gotten better each of the three games that the Bears have had so far, even though the offense has struggled as a whole, but it's tough to see Jaden Daniels and have a big game like that and not get at least a little bit jealous that he can have four dropbacks under pressure and just have clean pockets to throw from all game. I think Caleb could have maybe not this performance, but a pretty close one if he was in that type of situation. Which is pretty surprising because you look back last year and the commanders I do believe, if I recall, gave up the most sacks in the NFL. Last year it was like 77 or something like that. So to see their pass protection, I think that could just highlight, you know, how broken the Cincinnati Bengals defense is as well, but a fantastic performance from Jaden Daniels and I also want to point out Jaden Daniels played in college for like a thousand years. So obviously he comes in and looks Bo Nix and Jaden Daniels, both have good weeks, they're the most experienced quarterbacks that came out of the top guys. I think that's something that might factor into this as well. - And I just looked up the stat, the commanders were second in sacks last season to the New York Giants who made a few more than them. They were right up there at the top. The one thing I'll say about Jaden Daniels though, is like, yes, absolutely great performance, don't want to take anything away from him from that. However, I'm old enough to remember back when Mitch Trubisky threw for six touchdowns at 350 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers early in his Bears career. Like, you could have promising young quarterback against a bad defense, look like a future Hall of Famer, and then you play good defenses that get a lot more pressure on you and you offense a coordinator that you thought was smart, maybe ended up just getting a little over his britches. So I'm certainly rooting for Jaden Daniels to have a great career, but we've seen young quarterbacks have huge games and then not sustain that more consistently. - I like that. I like the skepticism, Lauren. You're barking up my kind of tree right now with that skepticism. That's what we like to hear, but some guys who people were skeptical about Justin Fields and Geno Smith balling out for undefeated teams. Right now, we're going to talk about that as we cap off, today's locked on NFL. You want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by fan dual sports book. We talked about both the Monday night football matchups from both the angles with all four teams, incredible slate. We got another double header next Monday. Can't wait to break that down, but we got some teams at three and oh, undefeated. And I think a lot of people before the season would be surprised to hear that these teams are undefeated after three weeks. Number one, we have the Seattle Seahawks. Number two, we have the Pittsburgh Steelers. We'll start in Pittsburgh, where Justin Fields, the cast-all from Chicago, a team obviously you know well, has led this Steelers team to three and oh, with some pretty good performances. And I think he looked better in this game than he's looked the first two weeks. And we're going to hear from Chris Carter from Lockdown Steelers about that performance. - Hey, everyone, Chris Carter here from the Lockdown Steelers podcast, here at Acres your stadium after the Steelers have defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 20 to 10 here at home, advancing the Steelers to three and oh on the season. It was a very impressive win all around for the Steelers. They gave up a busted coverage touchdown in the first half of the defense, locked it down in the second half, completely shutting down the Chargers and shutting them out from scoring. But equally impressive in my eyes is Justin Fields who came in and played very well, finishing the game 25 of 32 for 245 yards, only sacked twice, threw a touchdown, did throw in an interception, but also ran for a touchdown with a passer rating of 96. Justin Fields, I think, delivered a very solid performance, despite the one interception. This guy read the field well, he distributed the ball well, did all the things that I think he needs to do. And I think it certainly pushes the question, is he really Steelers QB1 moving forward? We'll discuss that a lot more. On the Lockdown Steelers podcast, Chris Carter here, stay tuned for a lot more. - There is absolutely no way that they can go away from Justin Fields after being three and oh. This is a perfect example of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And I refuse, I refuse to believe that Mike Tomlin would go away from that. Not only, not only are you changing the formula of what's worked and got you to undefeated, but I think the players in the locker room, we know, Lauren, we know historically, Russell Wilson isn't always a teammate favorite. That's just a reality. Now, why justified? I don't know any of that. I don't know. I haven't been in those locker rooms, I don't know. But we know from hearing his teammates talk that he's not always the most well-liked teammate, okay? So if you go away from Justin Fields, not only are you pulling the quarterback that's got you to three and oh, but you're also doing it in favor of a guy who, again, may not be the most well-liked teammate of all time. I do not think that would play in the locker room. I think Mike Tomlin is a guy who understands the pulse of his locker room, maybe better than any other coach in the NFL. He is a true CEO leader of men and there is no way, no way that Russell Wilson, a thousand percent healthy, no way they can go away from Justin Fields right now. I agree that it would be bad for the locker room and the team to make a quarterback change here. But I am a little bit torn on like how impressed I should be about Fields right now. Because like the Steelers ranked 24th in points and total yards on offense. Kayla Williams in terms of passing yards per game is 28, excuse me, Justin Fields is 28th in the NFL in passing yards per game this season. Like he's taking good care of the football, but they're not scoring the fun and they're not lighting the world on fire. They're just doing the easy stuff. So like in theory, at some point, they're really gonna be tested in a way that they're gonna need their quarterback to step up and make more of a, you know, take more of the lead on offense. And he just hasn't really had to do that yet. But on the other hand, you look at the teams that the Steelers are gonna play from this point on. They get the Colts this week, then they're at home against the Cowboys and then it's the Raiders. Like they should have three bad defenses that Fields can again, just kind of game manage and take care of business. And they could be, I mean, six and all again. I mean, those are three teams that they should be able to beat at this point. So like more credit to him wins away and it's working in this formula for the Steelers. I just wonder, you know, when they play like a real playoff team in the postseason, can they take that next step? And that's where your quarterback limitation will be answered or the question there will be answered. - Well, I'll be honest with you. I don't think the Steelers are Super Bowl contenders, no matter what. I think for them, it's about going to the playoffs and winning games, but I wanna point out this. I think that you're probably right about, hey, eventually they're gonna need their quarterback to not just like steer the ship. They're gonna need their quarterback to be a playmaker. But I don't think that I don't know for a fact that Russell Wilson does that any better. You know what I mean? He's clearly not as good of a runner as Justin Fields. And if both these quarterbacks aren't gonna be the best throwers of the football, then at least one guy is special in the run game and one of the more talented running quarterbacks that we've ever seen in the NFL. You know, Justin Fields has an elite trait to him, even though it's not with his arm, it's with the legs and Russell Wilson doesn't bring that. So I think that you're right about everything that you just said about their limitations as a team. But I don't think that Russell Wilson really changes that. So at this point at the upside with Russell Wilson isn't higher than I think with Justin Fields being a younger player, being a guy who maybe, you know, we're seeing, we're gonna talk about Gino Smith here in a second, but look at Baker Mayfield. Look at Derek Carr so far this year. Look at Justin Fields, look at Sam Donald. Like we are seeing a lot of quarterbacks with all these young quarterbacks really struggling, Raishung, Caleb Williams, Will Levis. Like a lot of these young quarterbacks are really, really struggling. Anthony Richardson even has been really struggling. It's funny that we're seeing a lot of the young quarterbacks struggle really bad. And then a lot of these, you know, second opportunity quarterbacks gonna revive their career here and look better. I think that might be something the NFL teams need to pay attention to. And I think that Justin Fields could be the next guy on that list. But moving to the Seattle part, well, go ahead, go ahead. - If you're Russell Wilson, do you request a trade at some point and say, give me somewhere where I can play? Miami, wherever, or do you stick it out? - No, if I were you, or if I were Russell Wilson, that's a great point, Lauren, I agree 100%. I think he should request a trade to Miami. Why not? Like he's too old at this stage in his career to waste a year healthy on the bench, if he is healthy or when he becomes healthy. If two is gonna be out for a long period of time, I think that that makes a ton of sense. In my opinion, it's not like he's getting paid a ton. It's not gonna be a complicated trade. Give a conditional seventh round pick and base it on the snaps. We've seen that done a million times. That's a great fricking point, Lauren, again. Love doing the show with you, Lauren. Such a smart guy. It's perfect, perfect stuff. But give it some credit to Geno Smith real quick. It wasn't the best performance. He threw two interceptions and, you know, but he's just been so good at piloting his team and he makes some incredible throws each week. I just want to give some credit here to Geno Smith, lean the Seahawks to three and oh, and although it wasn't a perfect week three, I think he's been one of the top 10 better quarterbacks in the NFL so far this year. You could make an argument for maybe even higher than that, but again, it's another one of those Reclamation Project quarterbacks who continues to prove that just because it doesn't work out with your first team or your second team, or, you know, doesn't mean that your career is over. - Yeah, I'm a big Geno Smith fan and it's been fun to see him take this progress in Seattle and I think I agree with you. Like he's had a really, really strong season. He's making really smart accurate throws from the pocket. And yet I'm much less optimistic about the Seahawks sustaining this 'cause I think around him, they haven't been as good and team-wise, if they were okay against the rookie bow nicks in his first game, but then went to overtime with the Patriots and struggled through that one. And then, okay, they beat up on a dolphins team with their backup quarterback who's not pretty good. I don't know that I'm impressed with what the Seahawks have done as a team overall, even if I'm impressed with what Geno's done. Now they got the Lions, the Giants, the 49ers, the Falcons and the Bills are their next five games. Like, yeah, the Giants are very good, but like the rest of those teams will find out pretty quick if the Seahawks are a pretender or a contender at 3-0. - Ooh, Lauren, that sounds like a good topic for next week when we talk after about a quarter of the season, contender, pretender. Lauren's got some skepticism. Let that hate flow through you. I love hearing all of that right up my alley. But with that, that is gonna end today's show. Make sure that you tune in in the afternoon to hear Tony Wiggins. He might have some things to say about the Jaguars, man. That was a disappointed fella when we heard from him at the beginning, but make sure you tune in the lockdown NFL. It's your team every day here on the lockdown podcast network.
