Luke, I'm coming out of the gate hot here. All right, one of my big bold-- When aren't you? For the season, I know, right? Shocker, I'm coming in hot. But one of my big bold predictions for the NFL season this year is that Michael Pennance would be the best quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. And look, it may be only week one. It may only be week one. But I think we are seeing the effects of a limited Kirk Cousins already. Kirk Cousins coming off the Achilles tear. I think that they didn't play action as much as you would normally want for a Kirk Cousins team that Aaron Freeman from the Falcons talk about. That's how he has to play. If you're asking Kirk Cousins to operate with limited mobility from the limited mobility he had already when healthy before the injury and then without the aid of play action, which has been a big part of his game throughout his career, I just think it's going to be incredibly difficult. And Aaron Freeman from Locked on Falcons talked about this as well. Falcons hype train got derailed thanks to poor quarterback play and poor coaching. I'm Aaron Freeman with your Locked on Falcons week one over reaction. If you were betting on the Falcons being one of the NFL's most improved teams in 2024, you might want to rethink that bet after a frustrating 18 to 10 week one loss of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kirk Cousins threw two picks and the Falcons turned the ball over three times resulting in nine Steelers points. And that seemed to be the big difference in the outcome of this game. Coaching dig Kirk very few favors with a lack of play action passes and a very questionable strategy to lead TJ Watt one-on-one all game. Can the Falcons rebound and begin to live up to the hype on the road in week two versus the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night football? Find out by following Locked on Falcons. Part of Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Luke, I would say that out of everyone at the network, you might know Kirk Cousins better than anybody else. And that's my will, yes. Uh, this is, this is tough. So the reason that Kirk Cousins played bad, which he was bad, some of that was Kirk Cousins, classic Kirk Cousins holding the ball a little too long, statue in the pocket, strip sacks, they got called back on penalty, but they were still bad. But the way the foul, you alluded to the way the Falcons approached this, you and Aaron talked about it. No play action, pistol, all shotgun, no under center, a way different offense than Kirk Cousins' scene. And the reason for that might be the Achilles. So it's his right foot that's hurt, his right heel. And that's the one you plant on when you do long under center dropbacks, so maybe you want to take that weight off of it. You want to go in a shotgun a lot, but you still want Bijon Robinson to have a head start, so that's the point of pistol. So that's why they did all that pistol. I actually think that's kind of a creative solution if you don't want to do that under center dropback. And that might be a short term issue. But if you want to say, OK, well, that means you're not too healthy enough to play, and the backup panic should go in, then that's the argument. And that's, I think, a more tempered argument than just Kirk sucks, put in Young Guy, which is probably smarter. But the other thing, and this is permanent, this is wild to me, they changed his alignment. So Kirk Cousins is a left foot back quarterback. You watch any highlight from him all the way from Michigan State through all of his years at Minnesota. He would always line up when he was in the shotgun left foot back. And the reason for that is when you start your dropback, your foot is already a little back. You get a head start, and your dropback doesn't have to be as fast. You can get to the top of it faster. You can do quicker timing things. Things just work faster. That's going to be good for the offense. When you're even footed, which is what the Atlanta Falcons have him doing for the first time in his career, as a 36-year-old coming off of an injury. They have-- and missing a bunch of camp. They have decided to change his footwork. That is sort of a pistol thing that can be really useful on read option. If you've got a running back on either side, you don't know which way the run's going to go. You don't know which way the quarterback wants to open up to. And it can kind of help you not tip your hand. But you don't have that head start that Kirk Cousins has always had. So the dropback's going to be a little bit slower. That means everything in the offense is going to be a little slower. That means guys like TJ Watt have a little bit more time. And you added the Achilles, and he's already going slower than he was going before. So it comes down to you. Exactly, and he's uncomfortable with it. That's the big thing. He's uncomfortable with it. So making him do something that is new to him, while also still looking a little stiff in the legs, and not at all what he's been good at for the last 12 years, utterly insane to me. Like I cannot fathom what Raheem Morrison, Zach Robinson, are doing over there. And that feels like that footwork change isn't something you do game to game. I've never seen that. Quarterbacks are right foot back or left foot back, basically always. And the pros and cons of those are more controversial than you would expect. But whatever you do, you do. And that is the comfort that you get into. That's your swing. That's your rhythm. So to try to change that rhythm on the fly, to try to change it back now, it might be too late. And so I don't know where the Falcons go from here. And they need to hurry. Like we talk about Cousins, like zoomed in. But as a team, the Atlanta Falcons don't have the time to like wait for this all to work out or wait for Kirk Cousins to get healthier. Like the reason that they went out and got Raheem Morris, and the reason that they made changes away from Arthur Smith is because being in the middle wasn't good enough, and they need something to put them over the top. So they go out and they get Kirk Cousins. They bring in a bunch of pieces. They're pushing in to win now. And to lose that game in week one, the way that they did with all of the Kirk Cousins stuff that we've talked about, to me, it's unacceptable. And they need to make a decision here of, are they going to wait for this to happen and potentially risk ending up 7 and 10 again, just like Arthur Smith? Are they going to go with who's the best quarterback right now, which I believe is Michael Penance. And not only do you get better quarterback play in a more open offense because you're not limited by the quarterbacks previous injury, but you also start developing your young guy, which clearly they went out and got him for a reason, 'cause I think he's the quarterback of the future. So to me, it kind of gives you multiple options to have positive outcomes. And then when Kirk Cousins' healthy, if Penance isn't doing well, you could just go back and say, "Hey, it was a health thing, not a performance thing." And then you don't put Michael Penance on the bench for a benching, you know, it's just- - Hey, you say we got you a couple of games and then we're done. - Yeah, exactly. So I think that would be the bright move, go with Michael Penance. But there are two other quarterback situations in the NFL, Justin Fields with the Pittsburgh Steelers, just Sean Watson with the Cleveland Browns. I think those weren't conversation. Now, I do want to remind you guys again, make sure to check out the second edition of Lockdown NFL Today, stepping into the barbershop with Tony Wiggins, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Bada, bada boom, sold. Just sold my car on Carvana, dropping it off and getting paid today. - Already? - What, you still haven't sold yours? You told me about it months ago. - I just... - Is the offer good? - Oh, the offer's great. - You don't have another car yet? - I could trade it in for this car I love. - Come on, what are we waiting for? - Ah, you're right. - Let's go. - Whether you're looking to sell your car right now or just whenever feels right, go to Carvana.com and sell your car the convenient way. Terms and conditions apply. - All right, Luke, let's continue today's edition of Lock on NFL with me, the Madman, Tyler Roland in the brain himself, Luke Braun. You got a window into why I call Luke the brain in that first segment, talking about quarterback feet alignment and how they open and pistol sets. I mean, that's absolute gold right there. I just had to let Luke cook, all right? Sometimes he's got to let Luke cook. But with that being said, there are some other quarterback situations again that we need to discuss. - Who are not letting cook. - Yeah, right, right. We let Russ cook is dead, in my opinion, the Pittsburgh Steelers need to stick with Justin Fields and our Chris Carter from Lock on Steelers. Kind of talked about why that might be. - But part of it was how he was setting up with Justin Fields, not just with the fact that he can run the ball, but also with the fact that he could scramble. And I think other people have made note of this, the Falcons really didn't blitz that much in this game. They had a lot of spies. They had a lot of contained. They were trying to just keep Justin Fields bottled up because they knew that if he broke loose, that was an easy way for this offense to score. And it wouldn't have been the way for them to create more turnovers or make things harder on them and force Justin Fields to have to throw from the pocket in tough situations and keep them predictable. But also in the run game, it made things easier because there were several concepts that as you saw, Justin Fields regularly was lining up in pistol and shotgun and Steelers were kind of faking a handoff and just using that QB option threat almost regularly to keep defensive ends honest. - Okay, look, they need to roll with Fields here. Number one, even if Russell Wilson comes back, he's gonna be a little bit banged up. And what Chris was talking about right there, the threat of Justin Fields as a runner helps a struggling Steelers offense create better math problems, get a math advantage because I don't think that the Steelers have the outside weapons to have a great passing game, no matter what, they're basically hitting it to pickens, fryer mute. - So Justin Fields know that? 'Cause he only threw outside. I don't think he attempted one in the side of the hashes. - Over the middle. Yeah, I mean, where are you gonna go? - Can someone tell Justin Fields that they don't have outside threats? - Right, right. Listen, I think that neither of the quarterbacks are gonna be elite, but I think that the Steelers have a better chance of hamming an egg in it with Justin Fields using him in the run game, having him as the threat of a runner, taking away a defender, like you said, Chris Carter's talking about quarterback spies and stuff like that, it just helps the Steelers. And look, Justin Fields holds the ball. He's a guy who everybody knows he holds the ball a long time. Well, Russell Wilson is a guy who holds the ball a long time. So it puts the same amount of stress on the Steelers offensive line that isn't great. It's not terrible, but it's not great. And they struggled in this game, but Justin Fields at least gives them the benefit of being a runner as well. So if you're gonna hold the ball a long time, at least make something out of it. And there's a better chance that healthy Justin Fields can do that over slightly banged up, calf injury, Russell Wilson. So if I'm the Steelers, I'm just rolling with Justin Fields and doing the best I can with that. - Have you ever seen the movie The Chronicles of Riddick? I mean, a long time ago, yes. - Do you remember how that movie ends? - I'm glad that you're gonna tell us. - It's at the very end, it's this confrontation between Vin Diesel and the Big Bad. And the Big Bad is betrayed by his right hand man at the same time. And the Big Bad basically has a choice between letting Vin Diesel kill him or letting the right hand man betray or kill him. But he's gonna die either way. He just gets to decide who does it. That's where the Steelers are right now. - It's over, I'm sorry guys. It's over. You've got a quarterback that holds the ball too long and can't throw over the middle or a quarterback who can't throw the ball over the middle and holds the ball too long. Like this is not your year, I don't really care. - But that's my point. That's my point. At least go with the guy who can run. - Yeah, go with the young guy then, sure. And then run the ball 80% of the time. If the Steelers do that, I would honestly respect it so much. - I'll be honest with you. - Like go be a read option like big 10 team, like sure. If they do that with the defense and the Mike Donut. They're probably still gonna make the playoffs. I mean, we saw it last year. - That's true. - You say that like it's over. - Leading the division, AFC North leading Steelers. - I don't think they can warm the Super Bowl, but I do have the Steelers making the playoffs because even with that formula, I think they can make it. And Arthur Smith is just having a fever dream, getting to run an offense that nobody wants to see. He just absolutely loved it. But with that being said, we do got to transition to another quarterback situation in the AFC North and it's DeShawn Watson with the Cleveland Browns. Watson has another lawsuit against him. The NFL is saying that they're not gonna put him on the exempt list, but I got to tell you, I think that this lawsuit may have been bought for and provided by the Cleveland Browns themselves 'cause they got to do something here. - I don't know if I can code sign any of that. Allegedly, allegedly, allegedly, allegedly he means alleged. - Tongue and cheat, but I mean, they're just in such a bad spot. And Watson is such a weight on that franchise right now. And Jeff Lloyd from Locked On Browns even discussed it. - DeShawn Watson, I've tried. And I take heat on social media and I certainly take some heat on the comments. And maybe 'cause the last we had solved DeShawn before yesterday was such an impressive showing in Baltimore closing out. The second half come back convening the Ravens in Baltimore. But I think the problem is is DeShawn Watson right now doesn't have the confidence with himself, which is the most difficult thing for any athlete to ever go through. Granted, he was pressured a ton and took a ton of hits. But the problem with that is once you start getting pressured as much as he was and you start taking the amount of hits that he did, now all of a sudden you're feeling pressure and thinking you're being pressured or thinking you're about to take a hit that maybe you're not. And it's really, really hard to come back from that. My guy Jeff is tired, man. - Man. - DeShawn Watson. - That is a broken man. - Yes, that's a broken man. Look, you know who doesn't lack confidence? You know who is never gonna be down? James Winston, that man went from a number one kick to a perennial backup that runs around the NFL and can't find- - Much easier allegations to swallow too. - Absolutely. And he will never lose confidence. James Winston still acts like he is the leader of the team at all times. Look, I know that this would be a terrible thing for the Browns considering they just extended, but moved the money around and created even more dead money in the future for DeShawn Watson, which I didn't like that move at the time either. But- - I think they have to. - I mean, it's the same thing that we talked about with the Falcons. The Browns don't have time here to wait on Watson. They need to win right now. After the season they had last year with Joe Flacco, they're expecting to win right now. Their ownership group is expecting to win right now. And if Kevin Stepansky wants to stay off the hot seat, he's got to do what his bosses may not like and win games. And that would mean James Winston. And as somebody who covers the Vikings, Luke, you're seeing the career resurgence at least in week one. For Sam Donald, a former hot dick, who finally found a good spot. Why not James? - Oh, I think Baker Mayfield might be the more salient one or two at a great game for Tampa. I wonder what Browns fans are thinking of that. But, so there's something I guess that I should mention. This came from Mike Florio analysis. So take that however you will, who got a piece of the DeShawn Watson contract and that this particular lawsuit, if it wasn't disclosed at the time of signing, could void a bunch of guarantees and actually get the Browns out of this situation. - Add into the theory. - Add into the theory. Tinfoil. - Add into the theory. - Legently, baby. - Speculatively. (laughing) But, so like, if you wanna do that, you can do that. Here's the thing, James Winston ain't taking you to the promised land. I'm sorry, you're right that he is a guy that actively refuses change. Yeah, neither will Watson. I think he's a little bit like the Steelers. I think you're just kind of cooked, boys. But like, James Winston actively refuses to change the way he plays quarterback. And so, you can lose, but it's more fun. You know what? Yeah, go for it. I mean, that's better. Lose, but you don't feel like you're selling your soul to Satan every time you flip on the game. Yeah, but okay, can I tell you the Zimmer story? - Luke, listen, I gotta put the reins on the brain. I'm putting the hat on the cap of the brain. We're talking Dallas Cowboys defense. Can't wait to get into that. And Bryce Young, whether you want 'em to be good or you want 'em to tank, keep playing 'em. That's all you gotta do. We gotta discuss all of that. I do wanna tell you guys that later on this afternoon, Tony Wiggins in "The Barbershop" gonna be breaking down some more NFL talk. Make sure that you tune in for that. Talked about Michael Pennix playing for the Falcons, Justin Fields in Pittsburgh. James Winston for the Browns. Now we gotta talk a little bit of Dallas Cowboys defense 'cause man, the Dallas Cowboys defense. Look, excellent against the Cleveland Browns in week one and it turns out it may have been personal at the end of the day. So we're gonna let Luke give us a little scoop about that. But first let's hear about this Cowboys defense from our guys at lock on Cowboys. - I wanna start with the defense, Landon. Because to me, that's the story of this game. They set the tone early. I think there were some concerns about what this defense would look like without Dan Quinn, right? Mike Zimmer's first game as a coach and they didn't skip a beat at all. - No, they looked fantastic. You know, obviously the Cowboys defense was the dominant force in this game. And you know, Sean Watts was basically under siege the entire game. The run game for Cleveland was basically non-existent. And obviously, you know, they were short handed and there were aspects of that that was not working for Cleveland. But I think, you know, the concerns that we had about how quickly would this defense and this group of personnel that's that it kind of been playing in a simplified defense? How quickly would they take on this kind of more complicated system that Zimmer's running? And I think the answer was pretty pretty quickly. - Well, the system may be more complicated, but the play calling might not have been very complicated. Luke, what do you know? - Okay, so, okay. This preseason, an article came out in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, rehashing a whole bunch of Mike Zimmer drama from his time at the Vikings. We don't need to go over all of it, but what you need to know is that in 2019, the Vikings made the playoffs. Huge underdogs in the Super Dome and they won that wild car game and they got dusted against San Francisco that year. Leading into that game, rumors were swirling that Mike Zimmer might have been fired if they lost that game and replaced with Kevin Stefanski, the offensive coordinator that year. Also earlier in Stefanski's tenure under Zimmer, Zimmer blocked him from taking an offensive coordinator job with Pat Schurmer and the Giants in hindsight. That was a favor, but still a little tense. So Zimmer won 10 games in that 2019 season, but kind of took it personal that there were rumors that maybe he was gonna get fired. Like, what the heck? I just coached a good team. What are you doing? You're gonna replace me with this young gun. I'm a better coach than him. That is the vibe here. - Right. - So, this, we had a point to prove. This one was, and I don't think it's anything personal against Stefanski himself. Stefanski was sort of a protege to Zimmer for a long time and then went and got his, he was one, a one year OC, got his head coaching job, blood the Browns to their first playoff win in 10,000 years. But I think Zimmer had to prove this and what adds so much insult to it is one of the Dallas players after the game said, yeah, we've got like 50 calls, we stayed in three, like the whole game. So the Browns couldn't figure it out. They just could, they found a couple of calls that worked. Browns could not crack the code and it was, and then everybody just gets to fly around the field and go play super crazy. So many of those Dallas players now are so familiar with the Zimmer scheme. I have to imagine it helps having Kendrick's in the building, having, you know, all of these old, old school, even guys like Nick Vigil that have been around was Zimmer since he was in Cincinnati, like all of these old school guys that understand the scheme and the ins and outs of man match cover seven. It was a drumming because Mike Zimmer had to prove something. - I want it to be personal Luke. I want it to be petty. - It's super personal. - If it's Zimmer, it's super personal. That dude is so petty. It's so beautiful. - And I'm here for petty. Obviously I am here for petty. And speaking of petty, Luke, the Carolina Panthers. - Bryce Petty, there we go. The Carolina Panthers, I just got to say this. Whether they believe in Bryce Young and want to see him improve, or whether they already don't believe in Bryce Young and they want to get a new quarterback in the next draft. Either way, the answer to that question is to play Bryce Young. And my guy Julian Council from lockdown Panthers agrees with me, but maybe not for the same reasons. - They got rid of Reich. They got rid of Fitterer. They got rid of that entire offensive coaching staff. And Broden Canales hired Dan Morgan from down the hall and brought in these players to see if Bryce Young is the guy. So after one week, I don't understand, you played 16 games last year, Julian. It didn't look all that great outside of the game against Houston and Atlanta. And it's not like the numbers were all that great in those games and he was excellent against Green Bay. But outside of that, left a lot to be desired. Yes, I understand. And I said this to you all yesterday. Like we cannot necessarily look at all this in a vacuum, but we can be adults here, right? And understand, I hope that moving on from Bryce Young after the first game with Dave Canales, who was brought in here to work with Bryce Young and do what he did for Geno and Baker for Bryce, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to hire that coach and go through all this trouble this off season to help Bryce Young, then to say, actually Bryce, nevermind, you're done. We're going to Andy, don't. - Okay. - Oh God, it's Dalton? - Yeah. - Oh God. You kid, come on. - Right, right. Honestly, Luke, it's like what you've been saying. The Steelers, they're not winning a Super Bowl with either of those quarterbacks. The Falcons, probably not winning a Super Bowl with either of those quarterbacks. The Browns, probably not winning the Super Bowl with either of those quarterbacks. And it's the same thing in Carolina. You're not winning anything with Andy Dalton. Either you're not going to win anything to like, what would that do? I'm having the same problem in Tennessee. People say, hey, go with Mason Rudolph. Well, what's that going to do? What are you going to do with Mason Rudolph? Maybe you're going to play off-birth and then what? To me, it's the same exact thing there. They need to keep playing Bryce Young. They need to see if he can improve whatsoever. And again, back to my petty point, even if they don't believe in Bryce Young and even if they're ready to move on and get a new quarterback, well, Bryce Young is worse than Andy Dalton. So keep playing Bryce Young anyway. That's going to get you to a new quarterback faster. - Wait, I don't know if we can say Bryce Young is worse than Andy Dalton. We might have to chill there. That's a lot. - I don't know. - And he don't let this stage in his career? I don't know if that's... I didn't watch any Panthers preseason. - I don't have to stage this career. You know, I'm just saying, no matter what they do, they can't go to Andy Dalton 'cause playing Bryce Young is going to lead them to their new quarterback or it's going to lead them to Bryce Young being the new quarterback. So there's just no reason to go to Andy Dalton. It's my overall point. - Yeah, no. So here's the thing, especially when it comes to Overtay, we're focusing on draft position, which isn't a conversation. I don't think any team should have in September, but you've got problems. Go try to fix them. But here's the thing about the Carolina Panthers. There are too many problems. You are not going to fix them. But you have to just sort of ignore that reality and do your best. You just have to, just to keep up appearances. And like, no, that doesn't get you any wins. That doesn't get you a better draft slot. There's no cap space credit that you get for doing your best. But just to keep up appearances for PR reasons, to keep ownership happy, to keep your job, you kind of have to go do your bestest very try-hardy list. And if you put Andy Dalton in, you're signaling to everybody that spent their hard-earned money on your season tickets, to kids that grew up Panthers fans watching Cam Newton go back to Jake the Lone. You're telling all of them, yeah, we don't really care about you this year. You can't do that. You cannot do that. You have to say, no, we're going to try to keep developing Bryce Young. We're going to try to keep giving in the reps. We're going to try to keep making this thing work out that we sold everything for. And if it doesn't, which it probably looks like it kind of isn't, then so be it, you're getting fired anyways. But if I ever were to be blessed with an NFL job, you couldn't make me at gunpoint, strike out looking. - Right, right, right. I understand. And Dave Kanales was literally hired to fix Bryce Young. So it's like, if you bench Bryce Young after week one or week two or whatever, then why did you hire this guy who's like a QB reclamation project guy? Just none of it would make sense. And then the business realities that you bring up are obviously in play. But with that being said, that is going to do it for today's edition of locked on NFL folks. Make sure that you tune in later on this afternoon for Tony Wiggins in the barbershop, breaking down more NFL topics.
