Now, before we get into Jacob de Grom's return, the very annoying losing streak that the Rangers are on and a really bad look for Texas on Sunday playing the role of fun police. This episode is brought to you by Price Bix, go to pricebix.com/lockdownmlb and use code all lowercase lockdownmlb to win $50 instantly when you play $5. Now the Rangers won the first game in Seattle five to four Kamala Rockers debut. He looked spectacular, glorious, wonderful, unhittable, except for that one time when he got hit. But outside of that, Kamala Rockers debut absolutely sensational. The Rangers had Jake de Grom on the mound on Friday. They had Max Scherzer going on Saturday and well, the offense did not really do its part this weekend, which is not shocking. It is a storyline that has been the case for basically this entire season. But the most important thing that happened in Rangers land this week, heck, I'd say the most important thing that happened in Major League Baseball this weekend, maybe even this month. Maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but Jacob de Grom after I believe 504, maybe 506. Over 500 days, Jacob de Grom is back on the mound back in our lives and he for the most part looked like the Jacob de Grom. We all knew and loved and enjoyed watching kick hitters, butts and make them look silly and foolish and bad at hitting baseballs because he is good at throwing baseballs that he looked absolutely sensational out there. 7, 6, gosh, sensational, I am just, I am just aghast watching him pitch every single time. It's, it's like I'm a small school child just giggling and cackling and pointing and kicking my feet. About the most joy I feel watching baseball these days is watching, you know, a truly special one of one pitcher just go out there and make opposing hitters look stupid. Like this thing that these hitters have done their entire lives, they've worked so hard. They've, you know, been the masters of their craft. They've spent years, decades, hours and hours and hours every single day for basically their entire lives, perfecting the art of hitting the baseball. And here comes Jacob de Grom. It makes him look like they've never picked up a bat in their entire lives. I mean, he's just a one of one special talent, which is why the Rangers took on that risk of signing him to that big old deal, why it is absolutely worth it and why no matter what is happening, no matter where the Rangers are in the standings, no matter what is going on around baseball. When Jacob de Grom is pitching, you get yourself to a television or a laptop or some sort of screen and you watch and you enjoy because I have never seen a pitcher as good as Jacob de Grom in my life. The way that his fastball moves, the way that his slider moves, the way he has not only exceptional, just raw stuff, but some of the best command in the game, which is not a combination that really basically ever happens. I mean, not only is he throwing hard, but the shape of his pitches is exceptional. The location of his pitches is exceptional. It basically, everything that a pitcher can do well, Jacob de Grom does well. I mean, he has three legitimate 80 grade pitches, the amount of 80 grade pitches in the game. Top of the scale, maybe there's 10 to 15 to maybe 20 if you want to feel generous about truly 80 grade pitches, I think 10 to 15 is more in the range. And Jacob de Grom has three of them. His fastball is the best in baseball, his slider, the best in baseball, his changeup, maybe not the best, but definitely one of the best, if not definitely top three changeups in all of baseball. And oh, by the way, his curveball is really freaking special and would be most pitchers, best pitch, but he doesn't use it that much because he doesn't freaking need to, because the rest of his pitches are just so gosh darn sensational that meters doesn't need them. And that's a special, special thing to have, even though he only went three and two thirds innings, he was hoping to go four or five who was not super economical with his pitch count, 61 pitches, 41 of those for strikes. And the velocity was down a little bit from where it had been in the rehab starts. The average 97.2 miles an hour with his fastball was not sitting the 98.99 that we saw in Frisco and at times in AAA round rock, he touched 98.7, even though it showed up as 99 on his first strikeout, which was of Julio Rodriguez. But still pretty much look like Jacob de Grom. And you know, I would not be all that mad if de Grom is no longer sitting 98.99, I am thinking in my own understanding of the human body and anatomy and how all that works. Maybe sitting, you know, 97 as opposed to 99 with still some of the best command of the game. And the nastiest slider of the world has ever seen the slider was still absolutely disgusting sitting at 89.7 miles an hour was the average seven swings and misses on 17 swings. Maybe two swings misses on the four seem fastball on those thirteen swings. The only swing that they had at the change up was a swing and a miss curveball. He only threw one time change up. He only threw three times. I mean, he really was just fastball slider because when you have two of the best pitches in the Gosh darn game, it doesn't matter what else you throw. You don't really have to throw anything else, if not just for funsies to see how all that stuff is doing. But to Graham, I think we will get probably two more stars of him this season. I think the pitch count is going to hopefully ramp up to the 70 to 75 pitch mark next time out, which if the rotation holds, he's probably going to pitch again on Fridays. I would just go ahead and assume everybody as the rotation is now what the starting rotation was for this last week. Just go ahead and pencil that thing then for this week and also next week because the next three games have already been determined who the starters are going to be for this upcoming series at home against the Blue Jays. Kamal Rocker will be making his double A or his excuse me home debut in the majors on Thursday in a day game against the Blue Jays. So if you want to play hooky for your job to go and check that out, I think it might be a well worth your time if you could just happen to call in sick that day. But any time Jacob agrom is pitching, I am calling in sick to whatever else I am doing because again, he is a little bit older. He is a little bit frail more than a little bit at this point, hoping that this is just the sign of, okay, you know, he'd been putting off getting Tommy John or UCL repair surgery for the last three years. And then he finally did it. I mean, 2021 missed so much time, 2022, he missed time all with elbow related stuff for the most part, just trying to put off the inevitable that eventually happened in 2023. Now that he's had the surgery a second time, maybe he comes back stronger and is able to take on a full workload, able to throw 150 to 200 innings in a year. I don't know if that's going to be the case. But what I do know is that every time he's out there, it is a special, special experience. One that if you love baseball, even if you mostly love just watching hitters hit baseball school, but watching an exceptional picture at the top of their game, no matter which line up they're facing, it is a singular experience. It is why I was so adamant the Rangers needed to give Jacob DeGrom whatever amount of money it took to sign him before the 2023 season. I said, whatever it's worth, whatever the risk, he is worth it because especially if you get him healthy, you keep him healthy for most of the year, mainly if you get him healthy and you're in the playoffs. And you can throw that guy out there as one of the playoffs for in your starting rotation. You have an insurmountably hired chance to win those games and exponentially hired chance to win those games with a guy like this on the hill. And every time he takes that mound, you never know when it's going to happen next. So instead of worrying about the health of his elbow, how he's doing, what's the pitch count? I think the most important thing, at least for now until the end of the season, maybe just in general while always watching Jacob DeGrom, is just remember how rare it is to see someone dominate like this and just sit back and enjoy it without the fear of anything else around it. Coming up from talking about Jacob DeGrom, not only him, but also Max Shur's return, another pitcher that starts with a J, but a pretty decent weekend this weekend, right after this riff from our sponsors. The odds are taken down for American League MVP because it seems like Aaron Judge is running away with that. But you look at American League Rookie of the Year, somehow White Langford not on this list in the top seven. Kind of crazy. Right now, the favorite is Luis Heale at +140. That's a change from before it was Colton Cowser had been the favorite for a while. The seventh favorite right now actually tied for the fifth favorite right now is Colt Keith, Sedan, Rafaela, and Mason Miller all at +20,000 wouldn't be surprised with another couple of good weeks from White Langford which we'll talk about in just a second in that second segment. The Rangers candidate for rookie of the year right now, not on there in the top seven, but that is Wyatt Langford and I would not be surprised if he works his way back into those odds because he definitely should be working his way back because the man has been absolutely on fire as of late. He won the rookie of the A.L. rookie of the month award for the month of June when he was downright sensational. He had down couple of months in July and August, but it seems like he is back to his rookie of the month ways in the month of September. He has been absolutely on fire in 14 games this month, hitting 315 with a 957 OBS. Three home runs so far, three stolen bases and he has just been hitting the crap out of the ball. I mean, defensively, he has been a net plus this year to the point where it feels like I think a month ago, maybe not even a month ago. He was at around a one or maybe one and a half more season and right now according to the baseball reference, he is at 2.6 war, 2.6, that's the fifth best on the team that is ahead of Nathan Eivaldi and behind only Kirby Yates who is at three, Josh Smith 3.4, Marcus Simeon 4.0 and Corey Seager at 5.0. The kid who had what he would probably describe and I think most people would describe as a disappointing rookie season is on pace to have nearly a three war year end up being a net plus defensively, something that was not expected and be an above league average hitter at 22 years old after 200 played appearances in the minors, less than a year after being drafted already and every day above average first division regular. That's truly sensational and seeing him go on this kind of a run, this kind of a stretch down the year just finishing off his season good, finishing it off well, finishing it off with hope for next year being even better than this year because this is solid but this is not the expectation that Wyatt has of himself that even the Rangers have of him. I think if it's all said and done if he ended his season tomorrow, this would be a net big positive not where I set my expectations which were probably a little high because I tended to forget, oh yeah, this kid is just 22 years old. He is just a rookie and he did spend all of five seconds in the minor leagues because he was so good. He necessitated that jump up to the big leagues. But right now a 103 OPS plus he has been an above league average hitter. He has been a net big positive on the base paths in the field and he's been the round average with the bat which was supposed to be the caring tool but the fact that he was just this incredibly fast and I don't think anybody really was aware of it or at least most of us weren't aware of how fast he was and how much of a floor raiser that was, how quickly he learned how to make good routes out there in the outfield that make smart throwing decisions, doesn't have that many just head scratching misplays and by a decent amount of center field as well. Seeing him in this season on a hot streak is a good, good thing, a good thing for this future. I think there's going to be a lot of expectations of him to make a jump in year two and I think he can absolutely do that. I think he will do that. The thing that I really liked the most about him was his ability to adjust and make adjustments quickly because people didn't expect him to figure things out that quickly at the minor league level. There were some holes in his swing of chasing right-handed sliders outside the zone of expanding his own at times against fastballs up and he cleared those things up pretty pretty well and him having an above league average walk rate and strikeout rate or I guess below league average strikeout rate, a better than average strikeout rate and walk rate while having some of the worst strike zone calls against him all season long is such a testament to this kid staying in his approach knowing the strikes and sticking with it and that is not leading to these prolonged slumps, it's just slumps of him not always taking advantage of the gift pitches that he's given but he's not the only one that is finishing off this season strong offensively. Also Marcus Simeon on an absolute heater as of late four home runs in his last seven games he is also fighting the good fight to be an above league average hitter in terms of OPS plus right now that's something that I'm really looking for and the last 12 games of this season is to see all right can Marcus Simeon end the year as an above league average hitter right now a 701 OPS and exactly 100 OPS plus which is league average right now White Langford at 709 OPS 103 OPS plus hoping that both of them can finish in the 105 ish range but just seeing this hot streak from markets it's been a disappointing year and you know when you get a little bit older there's always that worry of okay especially when you have the mileage that Marcus does I mean he takes he takes incredible care of his body right you don't be you don't become the iron man that Marcus Simeon is without having that great routine without being you know extremely meticulous in your regiments of of how you you know rest how you when you work out and things like that that is a testament to the work that Marcus Simeon puts in and it is why I felt totally okay and why the Rangers felt totally fine giving him seven years when other people wouldn't because they said hey this is a guy who I mean eventually he's going to age and he's going to be 38 I think at the end of this contract or 37 but they're not too worried about him just completely falling off a cliff because he takes such good care of his body and seeing him get this kind of a hot streak towards the end of the year reminding you okay he's not washed he's not done he can still have another four or five maybe even six war season next year have those offensive numbers boost back up to about where you'd expect for a player of Marcus Simeon's caliber which would which is going to be a huge huge part of this team bouncing back next year and being better than they have been another part of them bouncing back next year is going to be Jack Leiter who had a great piggyback start with Max Scherzer who made his season debut Scherzer looked really really solid and his four innings of work did give up a two run bomb to Julio Rodriguez I believe one pitch maybe not one pitch but later on in that bat after he went pretty far inside on Julio and it looked like Julio might have gotten hit with the pitch but it turns out it bounced off of his bat and then Julio hit one of the firmest home runs that I have seen this season into the upper deck for a two run shot to give the Mariners lead in that third inning but Scherzer looks solid I'm not you know as excited about every single Scherzer start in a way that I am about DeGrom I think Scherzer has lost a lot more he does not looking like peak Scherzer but it's still fun to watch an all-time great go out there and and chase these records and things like that of trying to get back ahead of Justin Verlander for tenth all time in strikeouts in Major League Baseball history I think Scherzer is absolutely going to come back next season and pitch for somebody I don't think it's the Rangers but the guy who finished up behind him gave him gave the Rangers four innings of two run ball in that same game at Jack Leiter he is going to be a big part of the Rangers success in 2025 being a part of the starting rotation six strikeouts for Jack three hits two runs both of them earned on a home run and two walks as well the six strikeouts were very very impressive the fastball looked up out as good as I've seen it wasn't landing the breaking stuff for strikes as often as I would like literally just one called strike between the slider and the curve ball wasn't as curveball heavy in this one but did get a swing and a miss and a strikeout on that I believe that was of Julio Rodriguez who was absolutely on fire this weekend as were a lot of the Mariners hitters unfortunately for the Rangers but good to see Jack go out there and pitch well in a situation that he's not really used to of going in in the fifth inning and being a piggyback starter I think we'll probably see that moving forward with him and Scherzer or maybe it'll be with him and de Grom I would rather just Jack get the starts over Andrew Heaney on Sundays but this is where we are getting seven guys into a starting rotation when you only have six games a week that does make things a little bit more difficult but what else what else makes things more difficult is being a little bit of the fun police we're going to get into what happened this weekend with Jonah Heim and why I just absolutely cannot stand what discover dot com slash credit card now the Rangers series finale in Seattle was what are the more embarrassing games that they've had this year and they've had quite a few of them we can go through not only the umpiring performance that was just horrific all weekend honestly both sides it was mostly horrific in favor of the Mariners but just some objectively terrible strike calls including one who's not objectively horrific but it was pretty bad and pretty inconsistent of what should have been strike three against Julio Rodriguez excuse me against Justin Turner ends up being leading to a three run Homer excuse me that was to Mitch Garver what should have been strike three ends up leading to ball for right ahead of a Mitch Garver three run Homer that ended up being all the scoring that the Mariners would need it ended up being more base runners than the Rangers had all day long here let's go through in deep process of the Rangers base runners from Sunday there was the Ezekiel Duran single that's it that's all of them and seek Duran was immediately erased with a double play hit into by Carson Kelly and the Rangers were twenty seven up twenty seven not quite down because of that one single but as close to a perfect game as you can get I mean twenty seven batters faced and twenty seven outs achieved because of that double play just a good job of pitching by George Kirby and the Mariners bullpen but overall not a great look he had a fine day I mean five innings with the three runs all coming on that home run Festa was to find not great in his one ending of work here's on Garabito after being called back up because of the season ending injury to Jose Arania gave up three runs and his two innings of work it didn't matter because this Rangers team is not going anywhere and the Mariners did not stop scoring after that three run Homer they would also have a home run excuse me by the home run by World Series champion Mitch Garver I should add an ad respect to that man's name a three hit day for him he has been much better offensively still I don't think going to get to the 200 batting average mark but in overall not not truly disastrous season for Garver but most of the frustration boiled over with one Randy a Rosarina we had a home run in the seventh inning to get the 20 home run mark the first I believe player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a four consecutive seasons a nice benchmark for him he celebrated a little bit much I mean a little bit show body for a home a solo shot to go up from four nothing up to five nothing up in the seventh inning off of well Harrison Garabito I mean not I didn't think too much of it he was really feeling himself and had like six different celebrations around the base path but it's fine that's who Randy Rosarina is he is a flashy showy player who likes to celebrate and have fun out there when he does well I mean so does his best friend and Rangers great all-time great a Dolos Garcia the Rangers like it when a Dolos Garcia celebrates and has fun and show boats just a little bit but one person who did not like the showiness of of the home run celebration by Randy Rosarina was catcher Jonah Heim who had a little something to say and had more something to say and just kept saying things about it which is just a bad bad look for anybody but especially bad when you are down five nothing and whining about how someone else celebrates how they are kicking your butts it's a horrible look it's a stupid look and Jonah Heim has been having a terrible season the worst season of his career a 583 OPS I mean you go into his baseball savant page and there's so much blue it is a kind of unbelievable I mean he has been bad at you know framing pitches which is his most valuable skill he has been terrible at catching base runner stealing he is one of the slowest players in baseball offensively his expected batting average expected mobile expected slugging the actual batting average woba slugging all of that way down there towards the bottom portion of the season of the you know the player's game in major league baseball I mean he has been the worst batter every day batter in major league baseball this year it's been horrible and having this kind of a look of policing the fun it seemed that just one of the world series last year and you know you're out of contention almost mathematically eliminated not quite but almost there and you're sitting there whining about somebody else how they celebrate it is just such a loser look for a team that just won the dang world series last year you just won it last year why is this bothering you well why is this the thing that you want to stand your hill I mean I met a couple of inexcusable mistakes in terms of pitch calling this series alone that led to big home runs by both the Vandy boys both of them on full counts both of them fastballs they called for just right down the middle the one run that Kima Rocker allowed was on a solo shot after he just missed getting the call because Jonah heim didn't do the best job of framing it I think he did good enough to get the call but alas it was a frustration call of a four-seamer right down the middle and Rocker's four-seamer is not one that is good enough to just blow down blow by hitters right down the middle and it was hit 410 feet to dead center field by Justin Turner the only run that he allowed in that game then with Jack Lider after not getting the call on a 3-2 pitch to Luke Rayleigh calls for a four-seamer right down the middle and Luke Rayleigh does not miss it and just really absolutely does not miss it for I believe 460 feet 110 miles an hour off the bat just an absolute tank and Jonah was setting up right there middle middle I don't know what Jonah was thinking it's been a truly horrible season for Heim I know he's had some off the field issues I mean with you know the health of his mother-in-law and I'm sure there's been some other stuff that has been going on with him it has been just a truly disastrous season for Jonah and ending it on the fun police I know there are many different opinions on the police by all kinds of different people but I think most agree that the fun police are are not a kind of police that people are supporting en masse and so doing this at this time is just really not a great look for this team that I thought was was better than this was better than going old school and talking about playing the game the right way I mean the stupid diatribe on the broadcast for five minutes after about oh you got to play the right way the game the right way or it's going to bite you but no this isn't the 1950s it's not the 70s guys should not be beamed by 95 mile an hour baseballs because they enjoyed doing well at their job that is playing a child's game in front of thousands and millions of people were passed that the game is better for it the game should be enjoyed and celebrated and grown by players like Randy Rosarada like a Dolos Garcia heck even Corey Seager and Marcus Simian had moments where they were pimping their home runs in that World Series run I mean the Marcus Simian home run a guy who is you know the most stoic seeing him leap around the bases in game five after he hit that game ceiling homer was one of my favorite moments in the history of baseball was incredible imagine if Corey Seager hit that game tying a home run in game one of the World Series and just dropped his bat and made absolutely no show of emotion whatsoever oh it's so horrible for the game I'm so boring the home run that he hit in game seven of the ALCS in that first inning where he just ambushed a pitch and just destroyed it that set the tone for that game seven without that if Corey Seager just hit the home run like normal and trots around the bases all boring like that that team doesn't get all fired up like that I mean if he just does that to Christian Javier and just kind of calmly walks into the base pass no Seager you know let out that kind of primal roar and he was you know leaping and you know smacking the crap out of everybody's hands on the way in there and everyone said that fired me up it's a good thing for baseball when people celebrate their home runs whether they're going from four nothing up to fight nothing up or they're tying the game up in the
