Welcome in to the Cap and G hood morning show. Audio ESPN 1000, and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Charlie. We've got Jaymore, we've got you. For a three hour ride, here on this Waddle Wednesday. It went up in phone lines for you. 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-7-6. It's our telephone number and cap. We did not get history yesterday at guaranteed rate field. Right here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1000, we did not. Because the White Sox found a way to win. They defeated The Angels yesterday by a score of three to two. A terrific pitching duel, but led by Cannon. I watched his shows many years. Cannon chasing the bad guys, and look at 'em now. Starting picture for the White Sox. - William Conrad, this is really a cannon. Not William Conrad, the portly, rather, he wasn't obese, but he was totally not in shape to be a detective. But he would always solve the case at the end. - I don't know. That big guy was running after the guy. I don't know how he was doing it, he was running after him. Yeah, he was running after the criminals. You recall this, right? - I do. - We're gonna do it with the Mullah Mustache. (laughing) - Tan raincoat today. - It is. (laughing) - Yeah. - Wait, don't shoot cast aspersions on the tan coat. - Yeah. - Oh, Cannon. What are you doing there? - Brutal. - Leave him alone. - This was a real cannon. - Jonathan Cannon. - Not a made up Hollywood TV name. - Made up. - Yeah. - Made up. - Yeah, made up. - Cannon was fantastic. You kidding me? - Wow. - He called him portly. - Well, I mean, but the guy was going after the criminals though. He caught him somehow. - He was built like me before I found God in a gym. - I didn't. - Jonah. - Yeah. - I don't think that's true. But nonetheless, the socks win three to two cap and eight. - This was a real cannon, Jonathan Cannon. He was outstanding. Outstanding, we had a zero, zero ball game. And then the angels take a two-nothing lead. Bottom eight, bottom eight, and I'm listening to Len and DJ. And I wanted to hear, what's he gonna say? - Right. - I had the TV going, and I had the radio on in my Beats AirPods. - Mm-hmm. - I'm like, I gotta hear the two calls. Our guy, John Shriffen and Len Casper. - Yeah. - What are they gonna say? - A sudden, there's a double by Deloach. There's a double by Ramos. Oh, it's two to one. They got men out of two outs. Luis Robert up. Pop damn up on the infield. Gonna get out of it. And the clown second baseman misses the ball. - Yes. - It was like divine intervention. Hey, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, guess what? Another night in the city. - That's right, go home. - That's exactly right, go back to the hotel. - And you know, because of the rain that we had earlier, you know, then we got the windy conditions, the swirling winds. - Correct. - So I was happy to see that, Cap. Again, even as a Sox fan that's seen the worst season of my lifetime, it was good to see the Sox rally. Now here's the thing. The atmosphere was set. It says and announced 17,000 were there to be able to see what they thought was gonna be history. But you know what? The Sox fan was still bitter, and they wanted to have Jerry here. If Jerry was there, he heard the fans say, sell the team, sell the team. You heard trippin' and stone kind of lay out more times than not, because what are you gonna say? The team's horrible. - Horrible. - It's not much conversation you could have, but when they laid out, you heard, when the angels scored, a lot of sell the team. And it was loud in there. - Yeah, I thought John had a good call. Trippin' had a good call at the end where he said, for another night, it's gonna have to, history will have to wait. - Like he acknowledged it. - We all know. - Like, he didn't try to sell you. - Hey, that's a big win. - No, it's actually not. - Yeah. - Like, it's gonna happen. They're not winning six in a row, and they've already got their spot in history, 'cause they've tied the 62 Mets. It's not like they're at 119 trying to avoid it. - Yes. - But, look, I'm gonna watch the game. We've got an event tonight up at few bourbon. All the boys are gonna get together. - Okay, but looking at this 37 and 120 ball club cap, just-- - That is breathtaking. - Just understand. - But, I mean, we're used to it now, because this has been the worst season of my life as a Chicago sports fan. And just watching this, the Evan and Florida game, I watch every night. But this one you're locked in because you wanna see how they're gonna make history. And just, if you hadn't watched Sox Baseball all season, you watched last night because you were curious. A morose strange curiosity to see a team lose 121 games. Just the scuffle, the inability to just get runners over, or just swing at the first pitch. There's just no rhyme or reason. This is what happens when you've lost 120 games cap. The struggle is scoring out. The angels are not very good either, clearly. They're like fourth or fifth from the bottom, as far as some of the offensive numbers that we've seen. But my God, I mean, you look at that lineup that still has Robert and Ben and Tendi and Vaughn in it, and Sheets in it, and still to struggle, to scuffling, just trying to get runs. - Right. - I just, I look at that game and I look at the games I've seen, I go, how's that gonna change next year? It'll be the same way. - The pitching will be better. Guys got some experience, Canon, if true Thorpe is healthy. They got some experience. - Yeah. - But offensively? - It's a, it's a, it's a, it's really a struggle, boy. Man, this team could barely score at three runs, or four runs on a regular basis. But the thing, again, I look at, what's taking the emotion out of it, Cap, is when you look at a roster, it's kind of like anything else we look at when we review Chicago sports. When we talk about the Bears, a couple of years ago, looking at that roster, you can't win by Osmosis. You can't win just by luck. You just can't win just by coaching. At some point, you have to have talent on the field of play. Same thing with this White Sox team. You might like a veteran, or you might like a young player, but Cap, when it comes down to it, if you don't have multiple guys, difference makers, on a nightly basis, then get on base, that can score runs, that can pitch the ball, they can close out. Man, you're just not gonna win ball games. And so, no matter we look at this roster and say, well, there'll be changes next year. It'll be a lot of the same. It's gonna be a lot of the same for a while. Look at the teams that have clinched across Major League Baseball that we've seen. - Fair. - Seven, eight, nine guys on the roster that every night brings it. It's something like, you know, O for four, but someone else can pick up the slack. Who are the guys that are gonna pick up the slack on this roster right here in front of us? You don't have anyone to say, you know what? You're on for four, I'll pick you up. - Correct. - Bad starting pitching, that's okay. We got a bullpen, they'll keep you in it. That's okay, we'll come back in the ball. You don't have that. - Like, look at the fillies, they go, oh, Harper's down for three days 'cause he's got a tight back or a hamster, or whatever it is. Huh, we got Castellanos, Real Muto, Trae Turner, Kyle Schwarver, we got really good starting pitching. We got a really good closer. Like, look into your Padres. - My Padres. - The San Diego Padres go, oh, Tatis is down? Okay, well, we've got Manny Machado. We've got Xander Bogart's. We've got Dylan Sees on the hill. We got Suarez throwing 100 miles an hour at the back end. - We got the new Tony Gwen in a rise. - Right. - At the top of the lineup, who rarely strikes out. - Right, the first week of May. We need another bat. - Okay, I'll go get you one. Here's the best hitter in the National League, Luis Arise. There's a batting champ. There you go, play him a second. - Yeah, Jackson Merrill, who can't legally drink yet. - And he's gonna be the rookie of the year. - Yeah. - Like, how does San Diego have all those stars? San Diego! This isn't the Mets with Steve Cohen, the Yankees. This isn't the Dodgers. San Diego! Name me one star in Chicago baseball. Give me one of a position player. Like, I think Justin Steele is the best pitcher in Chicago. He's a stud. - Jiminago would like to have a word. - Yeah, but he's got to follow this up with another year. 'Cause Justin Steele was, I don't know what, third, fourth. - Oh, no. - And Sy Young last year, and he had a good year this year. - But you got a guy, though. Like, I'm a naga. I know what you're saying. - Stud. - I know. - You're completely fair. - You're a fair stud, but he's gonna get traded. - It's fair for you to say show me again when it comes to Imanaga. - Yes. - I think that is built to last. I think it is. I'm a naga. But give me one position player star in Chicago baseball. - I'm talking star. - Ian Haps had a nice year. Suzuki is their best offensive player. - Give me one, though, that you go. Oh, wow. They got a star. - Now, we're talking about two teams, right? - You're not giving you two teams. - You give me Cubs and White Sox. - There is not one star between the two teams. - And then every night, I'm watching my Padres, and I'm watching Arise, and Tatisse, and Profar, and Machado, and Merrill, and Bogart, and on, and on, and on, and I got Dylan Sees in the starting rotation. Like, I mean, go to the Rangers. - Brother. - Dallas is in a better market than us. Whether it's Simeon, for $175 million, or Corey Seager. I mean, just keep looking at the guys they bring out there. I mean, come on. And they're not even a good team this year. Go to the Brewers, freaking Milwaukee. - Yeah, finding a way. - Yellich, I know he's hurt. Jackson Churio. Like, they're finding a way every day. And then Cubs reliever, they picked up Paredis. - Yeah. - No relation, I don't believe to our third baseman, Itza. He said, we got, we'll let go by the Brewers. We picked them up. He said, I said, we yeah, 'cause I'm a Cubs fan. He said, the reason the Brewers win? The energy in that room is unbelievable. The energy. Well, I don't see that energy in Chicago. - I do not. We're talking about isolated cities. Like San Diego, that is the attraction. 'Cause they don't, I mean, they don't have football there anymore. So, so the Padres are the attraction. And the ownership said, we will do whatever it is. We'll overspend because we have to compete against the Dodgers. - See, who do we have in Chicago sports right now? Do you understand my point? The reason, well, I'm answering your question. You say, how come we don't have that? Because certain markets have to be able to overspend because they've got a rivalry in the same market. San Diego wants to compete with Los Angeles because LA gets all the stars. They got all the money. And San Diego says, no, we're in Southern California too. We're a draw and we're gonna be the playoffs. And we've gotta beat you to be able to take over South, you know, Southern Cal. - Right. - 'Cause the Angels are nothing. - Fair. - Yeah. - But who in Chicago sports do you go? That's a real star. Can we want, okay, Connor Medard, he's a star. Okay, Jalen Johnson's an all pro with the Bears. Beyond those two, we think Caleb might become a, DJ Moore's a star. Give me who else is a star. - Angel Reese. - Oh, Angel Reese. She's not a star. She's a star personality. She's not a star player. - You don't think so? - No, absolutely not. - Really? - No. - Absolutely not. She's a star personality. Super cool. Good rebounder, can't score. - I would also take a step back on Medard because, and here's why. Even though that he's a crown prince and everyone said, look at this teenager and look what he's doing, he also has to grow as a player. We have to wait to see how the Blackhawks build around him. I think that he's gonna be a fine player, but he cannot really realize how great he can be until the Blackhawks score around him. - Okay. - He can't do it by himself. - Okay, so he's got to take a step. Angel Reese, she scored 13 points a game. She shot 39% from the floor. Elite rebounder, 13.1 rebounds a game. - So what's the difference between her and Dennis Robin? - Dennis Robin's in the Hall of Fame now. He did that for-- - She plays similar to him. - Similar, she could get there, but I mean, this girl's 22. She got to be better than she's been. She does. Now, if you tell me in 15 years, she's got the numbers Rodman does, I'll tip my cap and say she's a star. - You got to wait 15 years, huh? (laughing) - 10 years. - 10 years? - I worked 10 times as hard to get five times a credit. - Me? - When you shoot 39% and you're not a three point shooter, and you average 13 a game to one year, she's on her way. - I mean, she is one of the stars of the WNBA cap. She is. - She's got a great persona. - Yeah. - Great persona, but she's not a star athlete yet. And you make a valid point about Connor Bedard. One year, the team was terrible. Looks like he's going. - No question. - But he's not there yet either. So who do we really have? In this great city of sports, not their persona, who do we have that you go, wow, that's a star? - Oh, you don't-- - Caleb's not there yet. You don't have one, you don't have that guy. When you fly into O'Hare, and you say, this is the city that, and there's a blank there, they go back to Jordan and didka. - Yeah, Jalen Johnson is the only elite level performer in our city. - Elite. - And unfortunately for him, he's on defense. - Right. - He's a cornerback. 'Cause no one on first take is talking about Jalen Johnson and how elite he is defensively. - Right. - They're talking about Caleb Williams, 'cause everything is so offensive minded, because the person with the ball in his hands, the lion's shear at the time, that's the person that gets all the attention. - How could Caleb get there? Could Angel Reese get there? - Maybe. - Could Connor Bedard get there? Maybe. - Yeah, I think the city is flat when it comes to all that cap. - And that's pathetic, it's true. - In this town? - Yeah. - That is pathetic. - Yes. But you know one thing for sure that we do have cap. We may not have the star power, but we do have. - Ken, here he comes. - Wow. - The portly detective, getting out of his granada. There he is, cap, going after the people. And he's got himself a ham sandwich in one hand, a pork chop in the other, and Ken, finding a way. - Starring William Conrad. - There he is. (laughs) - The 25 year olds that are listening to him. - Who? - No, Google.com. - Just think of a fat detective. - All right, you don't have to say it like that. - This is the truth. - All right, leave him alone. He was effective. - Tweed the criminal go. (laughing) - I can't get in my fair way. (laughing) - But we've got canon, if nothing else. My guy. - Wow. - He found a way cap, in a full suit. - Did. - To get the criminals. - Had to tie up. (laughing) Wow. Anyway. - The White Sox avoided making history yesterday, but GM Chris Goetz also spoke before the game. All of some comments from Chris Goetz. You got to hear this coming up next. We've got five burning questions regarding the Bears at 7.30. Cap and Jay Hood, weekday morning, seven to 10. (upbeat music) - Okay, it's about that time. You're tuned in to the Cap and Jay Hood show. - Everything ain't hardcore, you know. - On Chicago's home for sports, ESPN, Chicago. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - It's the Cap and Jay Hood morning show. On ESPN 1000, and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you're gonna have a great Wednesday. It's a one of Wednesdays. We talked to Tommy coming up at 8.35 right here on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN 1000. So, Chris Goetz, the general manager of the Chicago White Sox, got a chance to speak to the press before the game. It's very odd these times when general managers speak. - It is. - It's very odd, like, why yesterday? I don't know, he spoke yesterday. I know they had the day off on Monday. It was the first game of this home stand, the closing home stand here. So, he spoke before the game. So, Chris Goetz had a lot of things to say. How about this? How about his opening statement? Cap, let's listen. - I certainly want to acknowledge, you know, the record that we're up against right now. And I think it's really important to do a heartfelt thanks to our fans that have been with us through this very difficult, painful season. They don't deserve this. It's been very trying for me personally and our staff and everyone in this organization, our fans certainly don't deserve to go through anything like this. I know that they pay money to come to games and watch games. They look to watch the Chicago White Sox as a positive outlet and we haven't been able to provide, you know, too many positive outcomes throughout the season. So, it's certainly my job and others now to, you know, focus more so on the future, learn from the past and start building towards where the White Sox deserve to be for our fans and everyone that works here. - Start building toward that, Cap. Start building. So, where do you think the building blocks are right now? If you're building a home, where do you think of the process and the building is right now? - Whew, I think they're surveying the land. - Haven't even bought the land? - Yes, the soil to make sure that it's okay to put a home on. It's not contaminated. Like they haven't put the foundation in yet. They haven't even graded the ground. - Exactly. See, this is my issue that I keep telling you about. You have nothing to build on. I mean, some bad teams as we know over the years, Cap, say, we got this kid, we believe in this veteran, we'll be fine. This will be our foundation. - Look at the bears. - Right. - They have their bond foundation. - They wanted to. - Yeah. - They hope they can win Sunday and take a step. But you go, oh, we got our quarterback. - Yep. - Now, five years from now, he may not be the guy. We don't know. We think he is. They got their quarterback. They got a couple of good receivers. - Wow. - Defense looks really good. Like they've got pieces. Could they use a new left tackle? Damn right. Could they use a new right guard? Damn right. Could they use a new center? Yeah. But the house is our, oh, wow, there's the framework of the house. How about that? - It's coming together. - It's got that Tyvek siding or that insulation in there. Wow. - Looking good. - Coming together, right? - It's coming together. - Yeah. But then you get this, Cap. You get this. Any regrets on building this year's team? - You know, those decisions that we made, whether it be an air and bummer trade or a dill and seize trade, obviously very talented players. You know, the players that were acquired were not directly brought in to make us, you know, that much better in 2024. It was more 25 and beyond. It was to build our prospect capital to eventually be more successful at the Major League Law Club. - Cap, again, through the minor league system, you would think if the Sox had any gems, they'd already be up here in September. Like, oh, hey, watch these guys now. In the future, there's going to be the next whites, you got nobody. There are no cornerstones, you say, boy, I can't wait, man, I can't. We don't have that. We don't have it ed Howard in the system like you do. We don't have that. Have you seen the ball club? See, he talks about building blocks, all these trades they made with really good players, you know, again, trading off, dill and seize and others. Well, I thought your minor league system was in the middle of the pack. Why are you worried about minor league talent now? Don't you? What about Chris Getz fostering the next generation of white Sox before we became the GM? Where are those players? There's not much coming and we heard the other day, I said, Colson Montgomery, he's starting to have his long-term prognosis, not be so good. He's not that good. What? What do you mean? You see what I mean? He's not that good. See? I thought he was your hot shot prospect. That's a disaster. If that is, if that's just going to be a long-term problem that doesn't fully bear its fruit. I mean, that's, I think how much Colson Montgomery consternation there's been the last two plus years or so. Remember his hitting streak? Like, that was the guy that was being sold to you as future white Sox, you know, reason for optimism. I mean, that's a disaster if he's just not going to be healthy. Charlie, I just don't know how, as an owner, you can sit there. Someone who loves baseball so much, he has got all the memorabilia going back to Jackie Robinson and all the stuff. I love baseball like cap loves baseball, but it's just no way, no way in hell that I could just sit there and allow this to happen. You're letting your home rot. That's what you've done. A beautiful home that you've had for you. Your home was a home that was admired by many owners across Major League Baseball. Your home is got paint chips, the concrete has cracked. You got bad lighting in there. You got musty rugs, shag, carpeting. Your home is rotted on the south side and you allowed it to happen if you're Jerry Rhysdorf. You allowed it to happen. So my whole thing cap is that when I tell you that this is not going to get turned anytime soon, that's not just hyperbole. I mean, I believe that is the case because you have to have a commitment. One way or the other, the commitment has to come from cash, actually paying for players or being able to develop a minor league system in which you have kids that are coming through the system with the orders have gone through it. The Tigers have gone through it. A lot of bad teams have gone through it and come out on the other side as a playoff team or much better. What about this outfit? Oh, God. I mean, come on, man. But if they are not like, so we had an interesting point yesterday, he said they announced what they're 10% they're going to lower the prices. Isn't that what they said? Yeah, saw that. But they're also going to cut the payroll by like 35 to 40%. Well, what are you cutting? The Sylvie's point was, why don't you announce we're cutting the ticket price by the same amount we're cutting the payroll by? OK. We're going to cut 35% off the payroll. I'm also lower the tickets by 35% to watch this. Yes. So ultimately, they're saying, you think this is bad? Wait until next year. Right. You think this is bad? This is going to really hurt. And then Chris gets, I swear, he must be tough on as well, striding to the microphones, telling everybody, hey, by the way, I know that this sucks and we're going to lap the 62 Mets. But I just want you to know, we're not going to go really deep in the free agency next year. This ancillary moves here and there, but you're going to get some of the same next year. Thank you. What? Really? And I got people I really, really admire and adore and like over there. You know, some of them in the front office? Yes. Like, there are good people over there, good people that work super hard, that have done a great job for that organization. They're not on the field. They're not in baseball ops. They show up every day and they give you a really good day's work, whether it's creating a milkshake or working in Sox charities, like Christina O'Reilly, who's awesome, or the people that sell sponsorships, all of it. And then you look over and you go, that? That side of the building sucks. Like, how do you let it get to this level? Just the temerity to step to a microphone and just let you know, yeah, you think this is bad? Drink our milkshake next year. Right. At least it comes back in the day with just lie to you. At least they'd lie to you. Right. They're just like, we're not going to be competitive. We're not going to tell cap. Correct. Like, yeah, we got this veteran here and this veteran, Ed Lynch would just tell you, yeah. Yeah, we're working on it. Yeah. They're slow. They're slow. First of all, we're working on it. What? Working on it? Jesus. What a middle figure to the Cub fan. Ed Lynch said, who cares about you? You're going to come to ballpark away. 40,000 people, sunshine, beers cold. We're working on it. Yeah. But this thing, I mean, holy. Like, Cub fans, we're ticked off. Thank you, police. They're going to finish with 84, 85 wins. Yeah. Like, how can we squeeze out seven more? Get it 92. Look good. That's a good resume. You've got to squeeze out 55 more. What? And we've run out of season. You could play till Christmas, you wouldn't have to. Oh, doctor. That's why I'm a proud Padres fan today, Cap. You see him wearing the shirt? Yeah. Proud. Stayed up late. Watch the clincher. If you would have said this morning, if someone would have said, hey, we've got a trivia question. You win it. You win $500. What is Jonathan Hood wearing to work today? I 100% would have gone. Padres shirt. And you're a diehard Sox fan. Yes. But I need for them to know that out of everybody that's on the air in Chicago, I'm from the south side. I live and die with this team. It's my favorite team, but I want them to see on YouTube and Twitch. If this ever gets aggregated, that this is a protest right here. Yeah. It's a protest. Yes. I stayed up late all season to watch the Padres. You know why? Because I like baseball. Like good baseball. Yeah. That Mickey Lopez. They're saying. So that's what it is, Cap. I like good baseball. Damn. Or make me the bullpen is Varland. Gus Varland. Who? What the hell is that? Dude, I do a recap. I've watched every game. Every game. I've watched. That's commitment. Because I do a recap after every game. And I'm watching some of these guys come in. I'm like, Oh God. I don't know who this guy is. You know, it's a funny story. I have to do some imaging for the game. So Brendan will send me these drops of these players that I got to cut up. I'm like, what's these people? Right. This is Perlander, Baroque. You're listening to Captain Jay Wood on ESPN 1000. Who? Who? Who? Who? Who? Who are you? Christ. Get off my ball club. I'm listening by the way, Baroque just strides to the mouth. And Steve Stone says he's got to be able to bear down here. He's got to make sure that he doesn't give up anything. Got to hold the lead. Bam! Home run. First pitch. Bam! Take that, Perlander. Who? Perlander. Why? Yeah. Like, there's my neighbor, Gus Varland. Like he works down at the paint store. And there's, are we still making gusses? Gus? What? My ball club. Here comes, you know, some guy. Jose Suarez. So 102 for San Diego, whatever his name is. We got Gus Varland. We got it for the paint stories. Fill it in here. Ah, this is Justin Anderson. You're listening to Captain Jay Hood on ESPN. Who? Justin Anderson. Who are you? White Sox baseball. Who are you? Correct. That should be the, there you go, Brooks. Put that on a t-shirt. White Sox baseball. Who the hell are you? Just have the, have the, the old Sox batter from 83. Just have him with his arm. I'm stretched. What the hell are you? In that white uniform with the red pin stretch. Who the hell are you? Script Sox. Ooh. All right. Is it Perlander, Baroah? You are listening to Captain Jay Hood. Ah! Don't put that on the air. Terrible. Wow. Coming up next, we got five burning questions on the Captain Jay Hood morning show. All right. This is Davis Martin and you're listening to Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000. This is Brian Ramos. Checkmate one six, land here suppression on target. That's why I see him in my shot shot. Or no shot with Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and ESPN Chicago app. That's why I see him in my shot. Good morning and welcome in to the Captain Jay Hood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. It's a waddle Wednesday on Captain Jay Hood. We'll hear from Tommy kill me but ain't 35. But first shot or no shot? Here's Charlie Bevins. Good morning boys on a waddle Wednesday. How we feeling today? Feeling good. We're good Charlie. Nice to see you buddy. Yeah. Good to be back. I got quieter in that room. Yeah. I got the late night call to the pen last night. Obviously. And I'm not feeling so good. I'm not feeling so good. Yeah. It happens when you have garbage takes. You have a garbage stomach. Oh wow. I call him first take. He got mad at me. That one. What's wrong with that? Blasted. No, he's just not black. What he's doing is he's purging himself. Yes. So you have a new project himself with a bad take. Yes. With new takes tomorrow. A new. I don't want to even know what color that is. There's 15 bad takes. He's just purging himself. That's all. You've got to recycle those bad takes cap. It's a horrifying image. That is. So there's that. Charlie's here because he's got to talk about the Black Hawks today. Playing their first preseason game. Go ahead. Charlie, break it down. Yeah. So Shutter, no shock. Connor Bedard. No. We all know that the White Sox had a chance at history last night. But luckily for them, the Angels out White Sox. The White Sox take a listen. And he pops it up. Right side of the infield. There's Lopez circling now into the outfield grass and it drops. Rommel scores to tie the game. Ben and Tendi ended up giving them the lead. But my question shot or no shot. That ruined history. You were disappointed to see that ball drop last night. I don't like our team. See, I kept my fight a different. I was fine with it because I'm still a White Sox fan. It was surprising. So I was not disappointed in the drop. I was not. I'm a Sox fan after all. I was listening to the game. I told you I had the Beats AirPod in one year. I got the game on the TV and I'm listening to both thinking two minutes later. I had a bottle of champagne for the 62 Mets. Sitting on the couch. I did. Here's to the 62 Mets. You're off the hook. Drink up. Gentlemen. Markery Kaplan in celebration. Go ahead. I'm listening to all of a sudden. I'm like, that dude looks lost. Oh my God. Swirling wins. He's the guy that hit the homer the inning before. First. Yeah. No, I was not disappointed in that. Charlie, because I'm a Sox fan. Wow. I know who was disappointed. Tyler Ocke went to the game last night. Yes. Hoping to see history sat through the weather delay. What's up? And then that happened. Who did he go with? I don't know who he might have gone solo. I don't know who he went with. But all I know is like, that's tough. You go to see history and you end up sitting at guaranteed rate for four plus hours. That's the tough way to spend a Tuesday night. Yeah. Especially with the rain on top of it. I wasn't sure if we even get the game in, but the guys did clear out. It's like a campfire milkshake. Yeah. So that, at least you got that. Hey, the amenities are great at guaranteed rate. If nothing else, go for lunch or dinner. If nothing else. Yeah. What was the guy that he called Carmen and Yurco, I think the other day, and said he's been to 71 Sox games. Of course. 71. Good. Good. Well, look, again, do not have a home. His home is guaranteed rate. That's it. It's the tailgate beforehand hanging out with friends and family. Great spot, right? Yeah. It's fun. Okay. So you go into the ballpark. Great food. If you can bring kids great fundamentals. And then the first pitch starts. Oh, God. Oh, here we go. That is what's like amazing about sports. Every team has at least one fan like that, right? He's one Vanderbilt football fan who's seen every game since 1992. Yeah. But you get it, though. You get it for college football than baseball. I suppose. 72 games is hard. Well, here's the thing. The reason why that that guy goes 71 times is because the sun is shining and it's the summer. Can you tailgate in October to see baseball? Not around here. Comes with Sox. So he's holding on to the summer. That's what that is. And I got no problem. You fan how you want a fan. That's great. You know the product sucks, but the beer's still cold. Charlie? Wow. Chris Geds yesterday spoke. I didn't slogan it. That's a good t-shirt. Beer silk. I know we suck, but the beer's still cold. On the ESPN 1000. Heart Rock Casino. White Sox Network. Charlie. All right. Chris Geds yesterday spoke at the media and discussed among other things, the White Sox managerial search. Confirming that Grady is indeed being considered for the job. But the last time he spoke, yet said he wants someone outside the organization with managerial experience. Now he seems like he's changing his tune on Grady's size more. Shot or no shot. Chris Geds learned that nobody wants this job. Oh, substance. I'm sure. Well, they're not going to spend the money to get Terry Francona or somebody of that ilk. Tune in. Not going to happen. Tune in. Even if you would. Let's say Terry Francona costs, what, four million a year? Five million a year? I mean, what's his name? Council's getting eight. Terry Francona is every bit as good. So let's assume you could get him for five. Well, they're willing to give him five. There's got to be four other teams that are willing to have a decent roster. Why would he take this? This is my retirement job. I'm going to take this one and win 40 games. No shot. Right. So they're going to hire somebody that can control a b that they don't have to pay a lot of money to. I have no problem with Grady being the manager of the website. That's what I would do. I've actually been impressed. The guys play hard. There's no circus environment. It's going to be talent. I would give it to Grady. I have no problem with Grady's size when we're being the manager. He's going to be fired in two years anyway if he gets the job. It doesn't matter. I don't care. It doesn't matter who's there if you don't have talent. He'll be fired in two years. If he wants it, that's a plus. Yeah. He seems to like it. And he's young enough where the players can relate. Oh, Grady Sizemore, you've been through bad teams before. And good teams. You've seen it all. Yeah. Sizemore should be the manager of the ball club. It doesn't matter though. I would give it to him and maybe he's Brandon Heiden. He gets management to stay loyal to him. Brandon Heiden had multiple hundred plus lost seasons. And now he's already clinched the playoff berth. He will not have a hide like run. Probably not. In this organization? Please. And if you are Tito, if you're Terry Francona, if the Sox had a commitment to winning cap where they say, yeah, we suck now, but we're going to spend a lot of money in the off season. And in two years, Terry, if you're still out there, we're going to want you. Terry would take the job for Jerry. He's already been the organization. He would. If there was a commitment to winning now. But there's not. That's the thing. I'll go even. I'll take another step. If the Sox had a commitment to winning financially and we're building toward the future quickly, Terry could get the white Sox of the playoffs quicker than I think they can in 2032. It's Terry Francona after a while. He knows what the hell he's doing. He does. So I would say that he would get the Sox to the playoffs quicker than what they had in there before and size more. But you know how many players? I'd give it to Grady. He's been sick and out of baseball. You want him to want to wheel him back in here to this? No. No shot. He doesn't even have to save him. Twenty two bucks an hour. That worked for you. Yeah. No. You know what he'd say? Yes. And get fired in two years. Here we go now, Charlie. All right. This year's NFL draft was known for really two things in the top 10 going into a quarterback and receivers. We've seen positives from all the quarterbacks in the top 10 at least the ones who have played and that even includes both nicks. But the early returns on the receivers has been even better. Malik neighbors playing like a top receiver. Marvin Harrison Jr. exploded for three touchdowns in week two. And we just saw Roma doings that come to life against the Colts defense. Shot or no shot. This draft will be remembered for the receivers and not the quarterbacks. That's a no shot because I believe Caleb's going to be a star. Jay Daniels looks like he's going to be a star. So we'll see who else emerges. Bonix, Drake May. But yeah, I still think it's going to be remembered for the top two picks being quarterback. Make your case though. Make your case though, Charlie. So if you say wide receivers, so that's Malik neighbors, obviously, the certain heads with the Giants. Marvin Harrison Jr. I don't think Arizona Cardinals going to be very good, but he's going to be a star. Whenever you think of Roma doomsday in this offense, who else can you make a case for in that regard? I think there's a higher chance that obviously of course because there were just less guys drafted. But I think it's more likely that the receivers went three for three in terms of hit rate from the top 10, then the quarterbacks do even three out of five of them because the odds always say that at least half of these guys aren't going to work out. We're probably going to look back on at least two or three of them, possibly even five thinking, oh man, that was, that was a rough draft that we all thought was going to be awesome. I think right away though with receivers playing as well as they as they can right away and with the kind of money they get, like you think about Jamar Chase, you think about Odell Beckham Jr., how much of a celebrity he became, like that's the kind of impact I think receivers have in the NFL now because it is such a popular position. It is such a front-facing position and these guys are just playing so well at the moment. So you mean Ricky Pierce all two or no in the top 10? Oh, I'm sorry. He's out with a gunshot. He's got a knee, he's got a shot, Billy's got a gunshot, this guy's got an elbow. This guy's got a knee, this guy's shot, okay, so he will be out, ruled out, I guess so, he was shot. Coron's got a quad. Yeah, so that's it there. Ricky, any update? No. Bullet wound hasn't healed yet. Wow. I think that could be a shot, Charlie, based on what you just laid out. It was. Yes. I think that's a shot. And not even speaking of a fancy football, just talking about impact players right away, being able to make a difference. I'm Malik neighbors is like a 40% target share or something like that. They're literally doing the pass into the Italians offense with Malik neighbors. I would ask this, a shot or no shot, could Malik neighbors save the balls job at the Giants? Okay. He could. I think it's possible. No question. Daniel Jones looks a lot better because, I mean, and this game Thursday will tell a great story for both teams, the Giants and the Cowboys, that'll be fun. That's going to be fun to see. The defense can't stop a nosebleed. All right. Right. Exactly. Maybe you have neighbors run the ball some. Do you play quarterback? Yeah. So maybe that would help. Charlie, can you squeeze in one more because I know we got around the NFL? Yes, I can. In the early since updated NFL power rankings and at 23rd were the Chicago Bears, probably not where we wanted them to be at this point, but the headline was it's starting to click for Caleb Williams. They also wrote that Shane Waldron cut the offense loose with Caleb and that he has progressed from week one as it kind of let him just do his thing. Shot or no shot, we owe this offense more time to get on the same page. That's a shot. It's the first three games of the season. One thing I will not do is allow these television shows or these hot shot podcasts to tell me what football is through three weeks. You could tell us about like the status of what's going on, but you cannot be able to just say through the first three weeks, this is what it's going to be all season because a lot of these shows will tell you that a lot of these shows will tell you that Caleb Williams is washed in the first year through three games. They are the same shows would tell you that we had the callers here. Lucas Patrick is one of the highest rated setters in the Nashville until last week. His rating was in the 60s because we play 17 games, not two. Exactly. Oh, the Bears offensive line coach must be terrible. Lucas Patrick looks great. Yeah, until last Sunday. We can talk about the status of how things are from week to week and day to day in sports, but you can't tell me that what we see now is what you're going to see in January. Correct. What do you base it on? I saw a game. I heard this. I read that. Correct. Okay. Well, you have to see the ebb and flow of a season to be able to make a determination of, Hey, at the end of the year, we saw the whole season. This has to change. That's all. Agreed. Listen, I understand cap from a fan standpoint, because we're fans. You don't want the season to be lost with all this, this pyro and belly who about this team, you don't want this team to be a bunch of underachievers. I understand that. At the same time, I'm not taking a crap on the bears through three games of the season. We'll talk about things that we have to improve, but we're not saying that everything sucks because they're one and two. I'd rather be in this position than some of these only three teams, especially Jacksonville. Oh, God. And they paid 265 million to their quarterback to 60 whatever you got. Our friends at ESPN Jacksonville are not happy, not happy because that that's their bread and butter cap, Jacksonville Jaguars, football and like South Florida's sports and college football. They like the Jaguars to talk about in the fall, like all of us that love to talk about the NFL. Now you're talking about an only three team and I want to be that not good. All right. We got around the NFL and then don't forget to waddle Wednesday, we'll talk to the waddle coming up at 835 on cap and Jhood. If you missed something, get the podcast on the ESPN, Chicago app, Jeff and Jhood are back on Chicago's home for sports, ESPN, Chicago, Nick both sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football about here. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is front, but there he goes. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts the comedy. It's time to go around the NFL right here on the cap and Jhood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN, Chicago app like to remind you that we are on YouTube, YouTube.com. Look for the cap and Jhood channel on YouTube. Hit that subscribe button. You can always use more subscribers, Cap, little chunks, little features are up there on the YouTube for cap and Jhood or the whole show. You can get the little chunks of things we talk about on the show. That's what we call that segment, like little chunks from today's show, but we also have the whole channel right there. All the shows have their own channels, so subscribe today for miss out. There's Charlie. All right, gentlemen, week four of the NFL. Kind of learning a lot more about these teams, but there's still some questions I have for a lot of them. So I picked out some of these intriguing matchups to me and what I need to see from some of these teams to just have a better idea of where we're at and the state of things in the NFL right now. Okay. Just first of all, clear it out, Charlie, for God's sake. Clear it out. Better. Oh my God. It's the Morning Show for God's sakes. Sit. You never hear me do this. This got Jack Daniels on it. All right. There we go. Hello. My rag. There you go. Michigan Jay Frog. That is Charlie Bevins. Let's go. Go ahead. All right. Steelers versus Colts. I need to see some more explosiveness from the Steelers offense. Justin Fields so far has been a bet worth making, but the offense still only has three touchdowns. Field is near the bottom of the NFL in average intended air yards and they're 27th in yards per play. We saw Caleb come to life against Indy last week. I think this is a great opportunity for the Steelers to sort of assert themselves a little bit more offensively. I still just want to see a little bit more firepower before I get really excited about Justin Fields and Pittsburgh. I think that's fair. This matchup is going to be very interesting. You saw how the Bears did not attack the run enough against the Colts front. Let's see how the Steelers do it because all they are is meeting potatoes. That's it. That's all they are. Tight end. You know, you got some throws down the field, but ultimately they try to run you off the line of scrimmage and rightfully so try to blow you up. So I'm looking forward to that matchup to see how Justin and the offense works against the Colts at, uh, in Indianapolis coach Tomlin trying to get the four and oh, pretty good doable. Do you have only scored three offensive touchdowns the whole season? Right. Yes. And but who surprised at that? I'm not maybe how he wants to win, probably because he's only been sacked. And I tell you the other day, uh, six times, Kat, yeah, you know, s s six times. So he's getting the, he's getting the ball out. He's running around the field and he's got, he's got his share of touchdowns. He's not going to like the world on fire, but on the, with the seals didn't have to. Correct. They have to. Correct. Just take care of the football. That's all. Just take care of the ball. All right. I look forward to that matchup as well, Charlie. All right. What else is on your mind? All right. Another, uh, noon matchup. It's a Jaguars going to Houston take on the Texans. So I need to see from the Jacksonville Jaguars is a Jim Trent bulky left in Houston. That's what I need to see. Really? We just saw an absolute disaster on Monday night. What's this guy's career defining achievement hiring Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco? He fired him in an ego war, hired Jim Tom Sula, fired that guy after a year so that he could hire Chip Kelly. And then they both got fired a year later. And then he goes to Jacksonville. He hires Urban Meyer. Yeah. Out of that, out of that whole thing, he comes out without a scratch. You look at his draft history. He took Trayvon Walker number one overall. He hasn't been that guy Devin Lloyd that same year. He's been disappointing. Trevor Lawrence's development has been largely in his hands. It's been a failure. Like you were gifted this quote, unquote generational quarterback and Lawrence certainly has some responsibility on his end. But he is not done. Like, I don't know what they've gotten better at since that playoff win they had against the Chargers. Trayvon Harrison was a nice pick. Brian Thomas looks great, but the bad outweighs the good with this guy. And we just saw them get smoked on Monday night by an organization that actually seems to know what it's doing in Buffalo. What are we doing here with this guy? Like he's never, I just don't get it. Look, that that team is a train wreck, a train wreck. And you're right, Brian Thomas Jr. looks like he's going to be a good player. Like a whole bunch of stuff that they have got to clean up in Jacksonville. And I would think Sean Con and Tony, is that his brother? That's his son. Sean. Sean, Tony Con are going to get to the point where, okay, we wrote the check to the quarterback. You wanted us to buy out urban because it was a bad hire. You want us to do this. You want us to do it. I'm getting new leadership. Period. I'm not sure I'm not sure they fired Doug Peterson, even though you may think that he should be. Who do they have this week? They have Houston. Okay. They lose that game. They're all in four seasons over. That's true. Let's just let it play out. It's out. You know, it sucks because it's at Houston. That's tough. That's tough. That's tough. I mean, they made the playoffs one time in Trevor Lawrence's four year rookie contract. The entire point of a rookie contract is that's when you strike and you've made the playoffs once. Yeah, I think it's I think it's a good thought that you have here because something's got to give. And at some point, Charlie, you have to say if it doesn't work out, maybe Trevor Lawrence just isn't very good as you as you pointed out. That could be the case also. Yeah. And I mean, it was maybe his best football was at Clemson. Yeah. Like I said, he's got a lot of responsibility for that himself. But a lot of times, you know, destiny, your destination is your destiny. And he got stuck in Jacksonville, unfortunately. Yeah. Looks like Tarzan plays like Joe, a regular Joe. Sit. That's it. See, I modernized that for 2024. You did. Because I would have been in trouble. Yes. See what I just did there. Who do Danny would like to see you? All right. All right. Three o'clock window, we have the 49ers taking on the Patriots. I need to see the 49ers stuff new England into a locker. The 49ers are one and two. They're coming off a really bad loss against a fully depleted Rams team. The Patriots just got their asses kicked by the Jets. The 49ers, you need to do the exact same thing. I know they're down a lot of their key players, no McCaffrey, probably no Debo, but your roster is better and deeper than theirs and you have the coaching advantage. Patriots are coming into your house with a non-existent passing game. Take care of business. Get it done. You see, this is when you need the show, the producers cap, put them in around a little round table. Let them argue it out. Now, 24 hours ago, she was telling us about the 49ers, right? Yeah. Talking about like, I don't think he said that they're going to be done, but he just laid out what Charlie said about the injuries. Well, it's hard to overcome, but when you're running backs in Germany, trying to find out if you have a cure over there or a treatment for his ailing leg that we don't have approved here by the FDA, that leads me to believe he may not be back any time soon. Right. You may not get what you're looking for, Charlie, with the 49ers this week against the Patriots. And it's upside down NFL. I haven't seen the number. Even though this says 49ers are heavily favored. What do we have here, Cap? I believe 10 teams with like seven point plus advantages on the spread are just getting killed right now. San Francisco, 10 and a half point favorite against New England. Okay. Good luck. I don't think that they'll cover that number based on how many guys are left out. Now, listen, you may get the victory, Charlie. I'm not sure if they cover that number, 10 and a half, that's a big number to swallow. Hey, is that bad? I don't think they are. They're, they're not great, but they're well coached. They play hard for this dude. I think it's a breath of fresh air that Belichick's gone. You're asking for, you're asking for a lot, Charlie, without, without McCaffrey, without Kittle, who's questionable, D-Bo are great. I just think two teams that are on opposite ends of the spectrum of where they're trying to go this year. I think the 49ers need to have some kind of statement when here and I look if they lose their one and three and I don't know how you recover from that and that division. Do you have one more? I do. I have the dolphins or satitans on Monday night football. I need to see someone besides Tua if they can operate this McDaniel's offense because all these Shanahan McVeigh offenses, one of the things they're best known for is that basically anybody can run them, you know, chicken sound, chicken crap. Shanahan did it with Purdy. He did it with Garoppolo, but he also did it with like Nick Mullins, remember like Nick Mullins came in and he had a really high passer rating. Matt LaFloor has done it with Aaron Rodgers, he did it with Jordan Love, now he's doing it with Malik Willis. You think about all the quarterbacks Kevin O'Connell has tried it out there. Even like Klinkubiak with Derek Carr. None of the guys that have come in for Tua since he's been in the dolphins with Mike McDaniel have had any sort of success. I know Skyler Thompson's terrible. One of the worst quarterbacks you'll probably see this year. The fact that they came into this season with him as their contingency plan with an injury-prone quarterback. That's another conversation altogether, but like I need to see some signs of life from this dolphins offense because, you know, if they're just not flexible enough to have somebody else run it, unlike all the other Shanahan offenses, that's going to be a problem because we don't know too as long-term future there. Yeah, that thing's a train wreck. How you, that's a great point that you make. How you come into a season going, I don't know, I get concussions, these pet injury issues. Yeah, we're going with Skyler Thompson. What? That's horrible. But Tommy, it's like a Scarlet letter though, isn't it? Like when you, we talked about Shanahan and some of these other quarterbacks, other head coaches, the floor is part of that as well. When you can plug and play a quarterback in and your system still hums, that tells you all you need to know about the head coach and the system because what was going on with Miami, with McDaniel, boy genius, right? But without Tua, it doesn't seem genius. That's so genius. It was at the same system. Oh, how about up in Green Bay? Much as I despise that team, they've developed Malik Willis in two and a half, three weeks, better than we've developed any quarterback to date. Yeah. Three weeks. That was how long he'd been there when they handed in the keys with Jordan Love injured. And they're 2-0. Yeah, I think it's coaching in a lot of ways, I also think it's your offensive line. And it's your building, it's the culture, it's the way you do things. But we give Shanahan and LaFloor and other coaches credit, Tommy, because if someone goes down, you plug that same quarterback in and it may not be as sterling as far as the numbers, but the production is there, like it works. Yeah, when you get it up and it's humming, it's easier to replace parts. If you're starting with a jalopy, and you're trying to replace a part on a broken vehicle, it's not going to work. You've got a highly tuned or well-tuned vehicle over here, and I need a part or two, I can probably get away with patchwork. So, I think there's a lot of it, like what they're doing up in Green Bay is impressive, and what they're doing in Minnesota right now is impressive. And hopefully we get to the point where we're talking about ourselves. You know what? I saw briefly, real quick, ESPN Milwaukee was sending out their show promotion. And their show promotion was and this is all in all seriousness are the Packers the best team in the NFC and is this a what the who are the Packers the best team in the not what you think it's that Packers. And no. What do you think I said Packers you did. Well that's fine that's just a Freudian slip because we don't like them anyway right wow the Packers know we don't regardless. They're talking about are the Packers the best team in the NFC and is this a three team race in the NFC North versus a two team race. And they weren't talking about us they were talking about the Vikings and they weren't poking fun at us. They were just having a sports conversation. Correct. See that's when it sucks. That's why they're Packers. That's when it sucks Tommy when it's like oh yeah the Bears. We're not even in the conversation. So when we talk about plugging in play and we get to get to the point where you know our first team crew is humming at a rate where then when you need to replace a right guard or a left guard or tight end or a wide receiver you don't skip a beat as much as you do now we're not there yet. More what Tommy as we get ready for Waddle Wednesday on the cap and Jhood morning show.
