(music) Good morning and welcome in to the Captain Jhood Morning Show. On a ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. It's a Waddle Wednesday on Captain Jhood. We'll hear from Tommy, kill me at 8.35. But first shot and no shot. Here's Charlie Bevins. Good morning boys on a Waddle Wednesday, how we feeling today? Feeling good. We're good, Charlie. Nice to see you, buddy. Yeah, good to be back. I got quieter in that room. Yeah, I got the late night call to the pen last night. Obviously. And I'm not feeling so good. I'm not feeling so good. Yeah, it happens when you have garbage takes. You have a garbage stomach. Oh, wow. I call him first take Shane. He got mad at me. That one. What's wrong with that? Blast it. What he's doing is he's purging himself. So you have new takes? Purging himself with a bad take. New takes tomorrow. New bad takes. He's just purging himself. You got to recycle those bad takes, Cap. It's a horrifying image. There's that. Charlie's here because he got to talk about the Black Hawks today, playing their first preseason game. Go ahead, Charlie. Break it down. Yeah, so shot and no shot. Connor Biddard. No. We all know that the White Sox had a chance at history last night. But luckily for them, the Angels out White Sox. The White Sox take a listen. And he pops it up right side of the infield. This Lopez circling now into the outfield grass and it drops. Rommel scores to tie the game. Ben and tend to end it up giving them the lead. But my question shot or no shot that ruined history. You were disappointed to see that ball drop last night. I don't like our team. See, I kept my fight a different. I was fine with it because I'm still a White Sox fan. It was surprising, so I was not disappointed in the drop. I was not. I'm a Sox fan after all. I was listening to the game. I told you I had the Beats AirPod in one year. I got the game on the TV and I'm listening to both thinking, "Two and nothing, this one's over. Probably could go record my recap right now." Yeah, I had a bottle of champagne for the 62 Mets. Oh, that's good. Sitting on the couch. I did. Here's to the 62 Mets. You're off the hook. Drink up, gentlemen. Yeah, Mercury Kaplan in celebration. Go ahead. And I'm listening and all of a sudden I'm like, "That dude looks lost on a pop-up." Oh, my God. Swirling wins. He's the guy that hit the homer the inning before. First. Yeah, so I was not disappointed in that, Charlie, because I'm a Sox fan. Wow. I know who was disappointed. Tyler Occhi went to the game last night. Yes. Hoping to see history sat through the weather delay. What's up? And then that happened. Who did he go with? I don't know who he might have gone solo. I don't know who he went with, but all I know is like that's tough. You go to see history and you end up sitting at guaranteed rate for four plus hours. That's the tough way to spend a Tuesday night. Yeah, especially with the rain on top of it. I wasn't sure if we even get the game in, but the sky's clear out. It's like a campfire milkshake. Yeah. So that, at least you got that. Hey, the amenities are great at guaranteed rate. If nothing else, go for lunch or dinner. If nothing else. Yeah. What was the guy that he called Carmen and Yurko, I think the other day, and said he's been to 71 Sox games. Of course. 71. Good. Good. Well, look, again. Do not have a home. His home is guaranteed rate. That's it. It's the tailgate beforehand. Hey, now with friends and family. Great spot, right? Yeah. Okay. So you go into the ballpark. Great food. If you can bring kids great fundamentals. And then the first pitch starts. Oh, God. Oh, here we go. That is what's like amazing about sports. Every team has at least one fan like that, right? Like there's at least one Vanderbilt football fan who's seen every game since 1992. Yeah. But you, but you get it though. I can't wait more for college football than baseball, I suppose. 72 games is hard. Well, here's the thing. The reason why that guy goes 71 times is because the sun is shining and it's the summer. Can you tailgate in October to see baseball? Not around here. It comes with socks. So that's, he's holding on to the summer. That's what that is. And I got no problem. You fan how you want a fan. That's great. You know the product sucks, but the beer is still cold. Charlie. Wow. Chris Gens yesterday spoke. I don't slogan. That's a good t-shirt. Beer silk. I know we suck, but the beer still cold. On the ESPN 1000. Heart Rock Casino. White Sox Network. Charlie. All right. Chris Gens yesterday spoke at the media and discussed among other things, the White Sox managerial search confirming that Grady is indeed being considered for the job. But the last time he spoke, yet said he wants someone outside the organization with managerial experience. Now he seems like he's changing his tune on Grady Sizemore. Shot or no shot, Chris gets learned that nobody wants this job. Of substance, I'm sure. So they're not going to spend the money to get Terry Francona or somebody of that ilk. Tune in. Not going to happen. Tune in. And even if you would, let's say Terry Francona costs, what, 4 million a year, 5 million a year? I mean, what's his name? Council's getting eight. Terry Francona's every bit is good. So let's assume you could get him for five. Well, if they're willing to give him five, there's got to be four other teams that are willing that have a decent roster. Why would he take this? This is my retirement job. I'm going to take this one and win 40 games. No shot. Right. So they're going to hire somebody that can control a, b, that they don't have to pay a lot of money to. I have no problem with Grady being the manager of the website. That's what I would do. I've actually been impressed. The guys play hard. There's no circus environment. It's going to be talent. I would give it to Grady. I have no problem with Grady Sizemore being the manager. He's going to be fired in two years anyway if he gets the job. It doesn't matter. I don't care. It doesn't matter who's there if you don't have talent. He'll be fired in two years. If he wants it, that's a plus. Yeah. He seems to like it. And he's young enough where the players can relate, oh, Grady Sizemore, you've been through bad teams before and good teams. He's seen it all. Yeah. Sizemore should be the manager of the ball club. It doesn't matter though. I would give it to him and maybe he's Brandon Heiden. He gets management to stay loyal to him, Brandon Heiden had multiple hundred plus lost seasons and now he's already clinched the playoff berth. He will not have a hide like run. Probably not. In this organization, please. And if you're, if you are Tito, if you're Terry Francona, if the Sox had a commitment to winning cap where they say, yeah, we suck now, but we're going to spend a lot of money in the off season. And in two years, Terry, if you're still out there, we're going to want you, Terry would take the job for Jerry. He's already been the organization. He would if there was a commitment to winning now, but there's not. That's the thing. And I'll go even, I'll take another step. If the Sox had a commitment to winning financially and we're building toward the future quickly, Terry could get the white Sox of the playoffs quicker than I think they can in 2032. It's Terry Francona. After a while, he knows what the hell he's doing. He does. So I would say that he would get the Sox to the playoffs quicker than what they had in there before and size more, but you know how many players I'd give it to Grady. He's been, he's been sick and out of baseball. You want to come, you want to, you want to wheel him back in here to this? No, no shot. He doesn't even have to save him. Twenty two bucks an hour. That worked for you. Yeah. No. He'd say yes, and get fired in two years. Here we go now, Charlie. All right. This year's NFL draft was known for really two things in the top 10 going into a quarterbacks and receivers. We've seen positives from all the quarterbacks in the top 10 at least the ones who have played and that even includes bow nicks, but the early returns on the receivers has been even better. Malik neighbors is playing like a top receiver, Marvin Harrison Jr. exploded for three touchdowns in week two and we just saw Roma doings that come to life against the Colts defense. Shot or no shot. This draft will be remembered for the receivers and not the quarterbacks. That's a no shot because I believe Caleb's going to be a star. Jay Daniels looks like he's going to be a star. So we'll see who else emerges, bonic, straight may, but yeah, I still think it's going to be remembered for the top two picks being quarter. Make your case though. Make your case though, Charlie. So if you say wide receivers, so that's Malik neighbors, obviously the certain heads with the Giants. Marvin Harrison Jr. I don't think there is on a Cardinals going to be very good, but he's going to be a star. And everything of Roma do and say in this offense, who else can you make a case for in that regard? I think there's a higher chance that obviously, of course, because there were just less guys drafted, but I think it's more likely that the receivers went three for three in terms of hit rate from the top 10, then the quarterbacks do even three out of five of them because the odds always say that at least half of these guys aren't going to work out. We're probably going to look back on at least two or three of them, possibly even five thinking, oh man, that was that was a rough draft that we all thought was going to be awesome. I think right away though, with receivers playing as well as they as they can right away and with the kind of money they get, like you think about Jamar Chase, you think about Odell Beckham Jr. How much of a celebrity he became, like that's the kind of impact I think receivers have in the NFL now because it is such a popular position. It is such a front-facing position and these guys are just playing so well at the moment. So you me and Ricky Pierce all two are doing the top tag. Oh, I'm sorry. He's out with a gunshot. He's got a knee. He's got a knee. He's got a shot. Billy's got a gunshot. This guy's got an elbow. This guy's got a knee. This guy shot. Okay. So he will be out. Rule out. I guess so. He was shot. Coron's got a quad. Yeah. So that's that's it there. Now, Ricky, any update? No. Bullet wound hasn't healed yet. Wow. I think that could be a shot, Charlie, based on what you just laid out. Yes. I don't mean that. I think that's a shot. All right. Good. And not even speaking of fancy football, just talking about impact players. Just right away being able to make a difference. I'm Malik neighbors is like a 40% target share or something like that. They're literally doing the pass into the Italians offense with Malik neighbors. I would ask this. Shot or no shot. Could Malik neighbors save the ball's job at the Giants? Okay. He could. I think it's possible. No question. Daniel Jones looks a lot better because I mean, and this game Thursday will tell a great story for both teams. The Giants and the Cowboys, that'll be fun. That's going to be fun to see. Defense can't stop a nosebleed. All right. Right. Exactly. Maybe have neighbors run the ball some, maybe you play quarterback. Yeah. So maybe that would help. Charlie, can you squeeze in one more because I know we got around the NFL? Yes, I can. The ring release. It's updated NFL power rankings. And at 23rd were the Chicago Bears, probably not where we wanted them to be at this point, but the headline was it's starting to click for Caleb Williams. They also wrote that Shane Waldron cut the offense loose with Caleb and that he has progressed from week one as it kind of let him just do his thing. Shot or no shot. We owe this offense more time to get on the same page. That's a shot. It's the first three games of the season. One thing I will not do is allow these television shows or these hot shot podcast to tell me what football is through three weeks. You could tell us about like the status of what's going on, but you cannot be able to just say through the first three weeks, this is what it's going to be all season because a lot of these shows will tell you that a lot of these shows will tell you that Caleb Williams is is washed in the first year through three games. They are the same shows will tell you that we had the callers here. Lucas Patrick is one of the highest rated centers in the national until last week. His rating was in the 60s because we play 17 games, not two exactly. All the bears, offensive line coach must be terrible. Lucas Patrick looks great. Yeah, until last Sunday. We can talk about the status of how things are from week to week in day to day in sports, but you can't tell me that what we see now is what you're going to see in January. Correct. What do you base it on? Well, I saw a game. I heard this. I read that. Correct. Okay. Well, you have to see the ebb and flow of a season to be able to make a determination of, hey, at the end of the year, we saw the whole season. This has to change. That's all. Agreed. Listen, I understand cap from a fan standpoint, because we're fans. You don't want the season to be lost with all this, this pyro and valley who about this team, you don't want this team to be a bunch of underachievers. I understand that. But at the same time, I'm not taking a crap on the bears through three games of the season. We'll talk about things that we had to improve, but we're not saying that everything sucks because they're one and two. I'd rather be in this position than some of these only three teams, especially Jacksonville. Oh, God. And they paid 265 million in their quarterback, 260, whatever you got, our friends at ESPN Jacksonville are not happy. Not happy because that that's their bread and butter cap Jacksonville Jaguars football and like South Florida's sports and college football. They liked the Jaguars to talk about in the fall, like all of us that love to talk about the NFL. Now you're talking about an only three team and I want to be that. Not good. All right, we got around the NFL and then don't forget to waddle Wednesday. We'll talk to the waddle coming up at 835 on cap and Jhood. If you missed something, get the podcast on the ESPN, Chicago app and Jhood are back on Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. It both sucks. These sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football about here. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is front. But there he goes. This is not Detroit man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts to comment. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? It's time to go around the NFL right here on the cap and Jhood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app like to remind you that we are on YouTube, YouTube.com. Look for the cap and Jhood channel on YouTube. Hit that subscribe button. We can always use more subscribers, Cap. Little chunks, little features are up there on the YouTube for cap and Jhood. Or the whole show. You can get the little chunks of things we talk about on the show. That's what we call that segment, like little chunks from today's show. But we also have the whole channel right there. All the shows have their own channels, so subscribe today for miss out. Here's Charlie. All right, gentlemen, week four of the NFL. Kind of learning a lot more about these teams, but there's still some questions I have for a lot of them. So I picked out some of these intriguing matchups to me and what I need to see from some of these teams to just have a better idea of where we're at and to say the things in the NFL right now. Okay. Just first of all, clear it out, Charlie, for God's sake. Clear it out. Better. Oh my God. It's the Morning Show for God's sakes. You never hear me do this. It's got Jack Daniels on it. All right. Good. There you go. Michigan, Jay Frog, that is Charlie Bubbons. Let's go. Go ahead. All right. Steelers versus Colts. I need to see some more explosiveness from the Steelers offense. Justin Fields so far has been a bet worth making, but the offense still only has three touchdowns. Field is near the bottom of the NFL in average intended air yards and they're 27th in yards per play. We saw Caleb come to life against Indy last week. I think this is a great opportunity for the Steelers to sort of assert themselves a little bit more offensively. I still just want to see a little bit more firepower before I get really excited about Justin Fields and Pittsburgh. I think that's fair. This matchup is going to be very interesting. You saw how the Bears did not attack the run enough against the Colts front? Let's see how the Steelers do it because all they are is meeting potatoes. That's it. That's all they are. Tight end. You know, you got some throws down the field, but ultimately they try to run you off the line of scrimmage and rightfully so try to blow you up. So I'm looking forward to that matchup to see how Justin and the offense works against the Colts in Indianapolis. Coach Tomlin trying to get the four and oh, pretty good doable. They've only scored three offensive touchdowns all season. Right. Yes. And but who's surprised at that? I'm not. Me? That's really how he wants to win. Probably. Yes. Because he's only been sacked. What'd I tell you the other day? Six times cap? Yeah. Six times. So he's getting the he's getting the ball out. He's running around the field and he's got he's got his share of touchdowns. He's not going to like the world on fire, but on the with the seals didn't have to. Correct. They have to. Correct. Just take care of the football. That's all. Just take care of the ball. All right. I look forward to that matchup as well, Charlie. All right. What else is on your mind? All right. Another noon matchup. It's a Jaguars going to Houston take on the Texans. What I need to see from the Jacksonville Jaguars is Jim Trentbalki left in Houston. That's what I need to see. We just saw an absolute disaster on Monday night. What's this guy's career defining achievement hiring Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco? He fired him in an ego war, hired Jim Tom Sula, fired that guy after a year so that he could hire Chip Kelly and then they both got fired a year later and then he goes to Jacksonville and he hires Urban Meyer. Yeah. Out of that whole thing. He comes out without a scratch. You look at his draft history, he took Trayvon Walker number one overall. He hasn't been that guy Devin Lloyd that same year. He's been disappointing. Trevor Lawrence's development has been largely in his hands. It's been a failure. Like you were gifted this quote unquote generational quarterback and Lawrence certainly has some responsibility on his end, but he is not done. Like, I don't know what they've gotten better at since that playoff win they had against the Chargers. McDonald Harrison was a nice pick. Brian Thomas looks great, but the bad outweighs the good with this guy and we just saw them get smoked on Monday night by an organization that actually seems to know what it's doing in Buffalo. What are we doing here with this guy? Like he's never, I just don't get it. Look, that that team is a train wreck, a train wreck. And you're right. Brian Thomas Jr. looks like he's going to be a good player, like a whole bunch of stuff that they have got to clean up in Jacksonville and I would think Sean Con and Tony, is that his brother? Yeah, it's his son. Sean, Sean and Tony Con are going to get to the point where, okay, we wrote the check to the quarterback. You wanted us to buy out urban because it was a bad hire. You want us to do this. You want us to do it. I'm getting new leadership. Period. Period. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. They fired Doug Peterson. Even though you may think that he should be who do they have this week? They've Houston. Okay. They lose that game. They're all in four seasons over. That's true. Let's just let it play out. It's at. You know, it sucks because it's at Houston. That's tough. That's tough. That's tough. I mean, they made the playoffs one time in Trevor Lawrence's four year rookie contract. The entire point of a rookie contract is that's when you strike and you've made the playoffs once. Yeah. I think it's I think it's a good thought that you have here because something's got to give. And at some point, Charlie, you have to say if it doesn't work out, maybe Trevor Lawrence just isn't very good as you pointed out. That could be the case also. Yeah. And I mean, it was maybe his best football was at Clemson. Yeah. Like I said, he's got a lot of responsibility for that himself, but a lot of times, you know, destiny, your destination is your destiny and he got stuck in Jacksonville. Unfortunately. Yeah. Looks like Tarzan plays like Joe, a regular Joe set. That's it. See, I modernized that for 2024. You did. I would have been in trouble. Yeah. See what I just did there. What do you Danny would like to see? All right. Who's Jane? Go ahead, Charlie. Three o'clock window, we have the 49ers taking on the Patriots. I need to see the 49ers stuff new England into a locker. The 49ers are one and two. They're coming off a really bad loss against a fully depleted Rams team. The Patriots just got their asses kicked by the Jets. The 49ers, you need to do the exact same thing. I know they're down a lot of their key players, no McCaffrey, probably no Debo, but your roster is better and deeper than theirs and you have the coaching advantage. Girls are coming into your house with a non-existent passing game. Take care of business. Get it done. See, this is when you need the show the producers cap. Put them in around a little round table, let them argue it out. Now 24 hours ago, she was telling us about the 49ers, right? Yeah. Talking about like, I don't think he said that they're going to be done, but he just laid out what Charlie said about the injuries. Well, it's hard to overcome. When you're running back in Germany trying to find out if you have a cure over there or a treatment for his ailing leg that we don't have approved here by the FDA, that leads me to believe he may not be back any time soon. Right. You may not get what you're looking for, Charlie, with the 49ers this week against the Patriots. And it's upside down NFL. I haven't seen the number, even though this says 49ers are heavily favored. What do we have here, Cap? I believe. It's 10. Teams with like seven point plus advantages on the spread are just getting killed right now. San Francisco, 10 and a half point favorite against New England. Okay. Good luck. I don't think that they'll cover that number based on how many guys are left out. Now, listen, you may get the victory, Charlie. I'm not sure if they cover that number, 10 and a half. That's a big number to swallow. Hey, is that bad? I don't think they are. They're, they're not great, but they're well coached. They play hard for this dude. I think it's a breath of fresh air that Belichick's gone. You're asking for, you're asking for a lot, Charlie, without, without McCaffrey, without Kittle, who's questionable. Debo. Yeah. I just, I just think two teams that are on opposite ends of the spectrum of where they're trying to go this year. I think the 49ers need to have some kind of statement when here. And I look, if they lose their one in three and I don't know how you recover from that in that division. Do you have one more? I do. I have the dolphins or satitans on Monday night football. I need to see someone besides Tua, if they can operate this McDaniel's offense, because all these Shanahan-McVay offenses, one of the things they're best known for is that basically anybody can run them. You know, chicken sound, chicken crap. Shanahan did it with Purdy. He did it with Garoppolo, but he also did it with like Nick Mullins, remember like Nick Mullins came in and he had a really high passer rating. Matt LaFloor's done it with Aaron Rodgers. He did it with Jordan Love. Now he's doing it with Malik Willis. You think about all the quarterbacks Kevin O'Connell has tried it out there. Even like Clinkoobiac with Derek Carr. None of the guys that have come in for Tua since he's been in the Dolphins with Mike Beadaniel have had any sort of success. I know Skylar Thompson's terrible. One of the worst quarterbacks you'll probably see this year. The fact that they came into this season with him as their contingency plan with an injury prone quarterback, that's another conversation altogether. Like, I need to see some signs of life from this Dolphins offense because, you know, if they're just not flexible enough to have somebody else run it, unlike all the other Shanahan offenses, that's going to be a problem because we don't know too as long-term future there. Yeah, that that thing's a train wreck. How you, that's a great point that you make. How you come into a season going, I don't know, I get to concussions these bad injury issues. Yeah, we're going with Skylar Thompson. What? Right. Horrible. Horrible letter though, isn't it? Like, when you, we talked about Shanahan and some of these other quarterbacks, other head coaches, LaFloor is part of that as well. When you can plug and play a quarterback in and your system still hums, that tells you all you need to know about the head coach and the system because it was going on with Miami, with McDaniel, boy genius, right? But without Toa, it doesn't say genius, it was at the same system. Oh, how about up in Green Bay, much as I despise that team? They've developed Malik Willis in two and a half, three weeks, better than we've developed any quarterback to date. Yeah. Three weeks. That was how long he'd been there when they handed in the keys with Jordan Love injured. Yeah. And they're 2-0. Yeah, I think it's coaching in a lot of ways, I also think it's your offensive line. And it's your building, it's the culture, it's the way you do things. We give Shanahan and LaFloor and other coaches credit, Tommy, because if someone goes down, you plug that same quarterback in and it may not be as sterling as far as the numbers, but the production is there, like it works. Yeah, when you get it up and it's humming, it's easier to replace parts. If you're starting with a gelopy, and you're trying to replace a part on a broken vehicle, it's not going to work. We've got a highly tuned or well-tuned vehicle over here, and I need a part or two, I can probably get away with patchwork. So, I think there's a lot of it. What they're doing up in Green Bay is impressive, and what they're doing in Minnesota right now is impressive, and hopefully we get to the point where we're talking about ourselves. You know what, I saw briefly real quick, ESPN Milwaukee was sending out their show promotion. Their show promotion was, and this is all seriousness, are the Packers the best team in the NFC? Who? Who? Are the Packers the best team in the NFL? What do you think it's that? Packers? No. Do you think it's that Packers? You did. Well, that's fine, that's just a Freudian slip, because we don't like them anyway, right? Wow. The Packers, no. Regardless. What they're talking about are the Packers the best team in the NFC, and is this a three-team race in the NFC North versus a two-team race? And they weren't talking about us. They were talking about the Vikings, and they weren't poking fun at us. They were just having a sports conversation, correcting us. Correct. See, that's when it sucks. That's why they're Packers. Yeah. That's when it sucks, Tommy, when it's like, "Oh, yeah, the Bears, we're not even in the conversation." So, when we talk about plugging and playing, we get to get to the point where, you know, our first-team crew is humming at a rate where then when you need to replace a right guard or a left guard or a tight end or a wide receiver, you don't skip a beat as much as you do. Now, we're not there yet. More what Tommy is. We get ready for Waddle Wednesday on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show. Truth of the matter is, you're listening to Captain J. Hood on ESPN 1000, weekdays 7-10am, but it'll last a lifetime. It may only be three hours a day, but it'll last you a lifetime. What? It's a Waddle Wednesday on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app, and Tommy's on the Hotline. That'd be the Car X, Tiring on the Hotline. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom, boom. Don't worry about the Car X name. Good morning, Tommy. How are you? I'm good. Hey, Jonathan. Tommy? Yeah, go ahead. Jonathan, can you name how many white Sox current players do you think you can name on the roster? Oh, four. We named them some of them this morning. I almost spit my coffee out as you guys were talking about the image. What? What? Gus Barlin. Oh, this is Gus Barlin. You're listening to Captain J. Hood on the whole of the Sox, ESPN 1000. Who? Who the app are you? Jeez. You got me before I had my first cup of coffee, and I think I spit it on the floor. Hey, guys, do it. It's dumb. Fletcher. You're listening. Don't touch me. It's like, what the hell on his Brian Ramos, and you're like, what the hell? Who? Tommy. Hey, man. It's Chekey Robinson. What's up, man? Captain, for the white Sox. You listen to Captain J. Hood, man. I don't know who you are. Get off my roster. Weird. Come on, Tommy. Oh, man. I needed that after watching bears film for two days. Oh, God. I mean, just, I mean, listen, Jay Moore has all the imaging. We're just not playing. No. No one would know. Exactly. Like, like, he's got, like, every guy. You've got everybody. And he's just a solid. So you're listening to Captain J. Hood. Yeah. Yeah. Save it. Oh, man. We play the Cattley endo, being Morgan free. Yeah, that's fine. That's. This is, like, the Loach, you're listening to Captain J. Oh, the Loach. You're barely on the roster. Oh, man. So, yeah. So that's it. I needed that. I mean, but no, seriously, like, I mean, look, Jay Moore has them all in the library. We're just not cranking it on the air. No shot. It's not happening. No. You're confusing. You're listening. They don't know if they're listening to Chicago sports radio, if you put that on. Arms, hands, and cast-offs, and their duels, nonsense. Tommy, we talked a lot, you and I, about what you saw on the game film. Yeah. So, in part, that wisdom on our audience here in the morning, what did your analysis tell you? Because talking to you at all in last night, I think you think we're close. Yeah. I think that there are some plays that are close, for sure. I think if you zoom in, yeah, I can identify some plays. It's just one guy making a mistake here, another guy here. And I think all of that, you know, I've preached patience. And I know people are tired of hearing me say that, because when you see the same people make the same mistakes, everybody loses patience, but I still believe it will take some time. How much better it gets? Well, that's to be determined. Yeah, there are some plays that are very close. But I would say, overall, though, you know, cap to kind of change the tune of the conversation, I was really disappointed that they went to Indianapolis and faced a defense that really couldn't stop a fart, and they couldn't really get anything. And I look at the yards, I got it. But when it comes to establishing a running game and trying to find a little bit of an identity to take some pressure off of your quarterback, all they could do was 28 carries for 63 yards. And I know everyone looks at the passing totals and says, well, you can't be that lopsided. Well, as I told you earlier in the week, prior to them taking the ball over on the two-minute drill, they got the ball with 51 seconds left, I think, at the end of the first quarter, they were 15 runs and 21 passes. That's as balanced as you're going to get the OC that you hired. So they tried, you just couldn't get anything going on the ground. And at that point, I heard Carmen Yerko say it the other day, what do you want to do? You know, I've got a quarterback and I've built this team to be a pass-first team and we're trying to run and we have no identity and we can't do it and you can't do it. You can't do it. At some point, you're going to drop back and throw it. So I was really disappointed with that. I think the quarterback is making strides. My faith in him is not shook in any way, shape, or form. But I'm not going to ignore pointing out things that are bad decisions and bad plays on his behalf. And the two interceptions can't happen. You know, I heard you describe it earlier, Kat, the first one, you know, he's got a back in the flat. Throw it early. If you're going to look left and he ultimately throws left and walks into an interception because footwork was bad, then throw it early because whoever it was in the flat on the left could have caught the ball and made it first down or look right or DJ Moore's open on a 12 yard in route. And then the back on the other side is wide open in space, but he decided to shift to his left to shuffle and ultimately through the ball late got it picked off. And then the second interception, I would have never thrown you. You know, I hear people say, well, he put it in there. He threw it into double coverage when the guy in the flat's wide open. You know, we used to pound on Justin for not taking his, or I did, for not taking his layups. Take your layups. And when you've got a guy in the flat, but these are learning experiences. So like, you know, he's rookie. Those are negative plays that can't happen anymore. But then you put on the film and you see him make the throw to Rome, you know, on the deep ball and the deep cross. I think they were working in the middle of the field a little bit more. When the ball comes out, it comes out quick. But you know, there are still things that need to be worked on. And you know, they're not getting any help with the running game at this particular time. I don't know who they are, Jonathan. I don't know if they want to be this ro-- the zone blocking scheme and go laterally or you know, that's not going to work. So we're going to line up and go forward, but we can't move anybody. But look, the identity of your team, I told you, you know, I think I said this to you guys the other day, is built by your general manager first and foremost because he's in charge of acquiring the talent and then your offensive coordinator. And right now, they don't have a running game identity, which I think is causing them not to have any flow. Tommy, we asked this during fire burning questions, and I'll ask you about Matt Iberfluce through the first three games, what is your letter grade for Iberfluce? Well, he's the head coach, right? Because so is the head coach, I would give him, you know, I think you got to be a C minus or a D, don't you? Yeah, I had started at a D, didn't I, Hoodie? It's a D. Hoodie, talk me up to a D plus C minus, but I think it was a defense. The defense is good, but guess what? You blew two challenges two weeks ago. You had to take a time out on a two point conversion that your whole staff didn't realize, yep, my son Brett sitting on the couch said, five minutes or, dad, if we score here, we got to go for two. How do they not know that? So how would you grade it? So everything you see at this point, I think you're right. I think it's, you know, it's a D because you can't, and I also, I take into consideration this is his third year, right? I mean, so you have to talk like him, right? As a D, I think when you talk about being a head coach, if that's the role we're talking about versus being the defensive coordinator. And I think if you're unhappy with the way that the game plan is evolving, the head coach can stand, you stand next to somebody who at the very least has a connection to, I don't know where Waldron is. Is he on the sideline? Or is he up in the pool? He's on the sideline. Okay. Walk next to him. And if you don't like the, you know, the flow of the game, you're the head coach. Tell him I want you to run the football more, right? So why he told us that at least when he was coaching in Chicago and Dallas, the headset, he said, Ron Turner, whoever would call the play, he said, and I would just hear it, but I would let it go and let them call it. And he said one game, they had, I don't know, a seven point lead. He said, I don't know, 10 minutes to go. And they called some pass. And he hit his button, overruled your hand in a ball, the Ricky Williams, 14 consecutive plays. He ended up in the end zone and won the game. He's like, the head coach absolutely can overrule the OC. Well, at the very least, my point is cap that, that if you don't like the flow of how things are being called or things are being run, then his, you know, his voice should be heard at the very least when the defense is on the field. So I mean, look, it's three weeks in and I'm not going to define this team after three weeks. But I'm also not going to ignore the fact that they went to Indy and should have been able to dictate some of the policy down there, our offense versus their defense. And we didn't, and I heard you guys say, well, we should be able to move the ball at home against the Rams. I agree in theory. I also thought they should have been able to move the ball against the 30 second ranked run defense down in Indy. And they didn't. Well, they played the Steelers this Sunday. The Steelers will show you how to do that. Yes. You want to move the ball? Tom will make sure the ball moves. And this is the, this is the twist though, Jonathan, because you have to run the ball. You know, the old adages is you throw it to score points. You run it to win it. And in theory, I do get all of that. And I think it's, it's a good, you know, the good axiom, but you know, they're not built to run. They're just not. Look at the roster construction. There needs to be a commitment to run it some and to be able to get your flow going. But if you think they're just all of a sudden now because everyone's pissed off going to put a packet in and we're just going to run it, like you're not built to do that. You just not. So this is where the OC's got to come up with something. If it was me and nobody's listening to me up there, I would scale back a bunch of stuff. I just would. This is a team where if I've got, I've given this group 40 plays to run. How many of them have they run? Well, not many. So I'm going to take some of them off the table. I'm going to go through this even this early in the season with a rookie quarterback. I'm going to self scout and say, Hey, we don't do this well. We don't do that. Well, those things are gone. We're going to simplify some things to help the show and quarterback continue to get acclimated. All right. We got to take a quick time out more with the great Tom wattle on Captain Jay Hood. You're listening to Captain Jay Hood. Follow the show on Instagram at the cat man and at IGJ hood. This is ESPN Chicago, Chicago's home for sports. It's a one on Wednesday on the Captain Jay Hood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on ESPN Chicago app. Tommy, the next opponent is the Rams. So what stands out most about what the Bears have to face here with Matthew Stafford and some of the stars for the Rams? Yeah, I would look Jonathan first at their defense. They're dead last stopping the run at 177 yards. I think being at home and being able to to kind of, you know, handle the crowd noise will be it'll be easier for it. Something Tom Thayer is pointed out quite a bit and Tom, you know, obviously played in the league for a decade and a half. So he knows, especially as an offensive lineman, being at home, I think and not having to go on a silent count so much will help a young quarterback and that offense against a defense that really has struggled to stop the run. But on the other side, you know, as much as I've said that the defense kept them in that game Sunday in Indianapolis, I would argue that Anthony Richardson kept them in the game more than anybody kept them in the game. He was just bad and if you you allow some guys to get behind you on third and long the way that they did and you allow some of the, you know, some of the other issues at times and again, I'm not, you know, dog kick in the defense because they have been really good this year. But Matthew Stafford can make every throw and you better get to him because he's he's he's not as we've seen whether he's with the Lions are now advanced in his career with the Rams. He's not 100% always wanting to stand back there and take a ton of hits. You know, ball will come out quick. He'll take some sacks. So I would think pressure on on Stafford is important. I would come after him. I'd blitz him because your back end should be able to hold up against a receiving court. That's still pretty good, but doesn't have Nakua or Cooper cup. So pressure staff or don't let him sit back there and be comfortable and and try to get him to throw when you want him to throw, not when he wants to throw. In terms of Caleb Williams, you know, there's all these national shows now. Did the Bears make the wrong choice? Should they have taken Jayden Daniels? You're telling everyone relax. Yeah, it's close. It's too early to. I mean, listen, Jayden Daniels is a really good player. Yeah. He went second. Yeah. So, I mean, I have no regrets that the Bears chose Caleb Williams over Jayden Daniels. I think two, three weeks into the season to come to any long term conclusions, I think is foolish. And by the way, if you look at what they're doing and Jayden Daniels is part of what they're doing running the football, but they're a better team at the line of scrimmage at the moment, trying to run a balanced attack. They have established their running game significantly better than the Bears have, which will help a young quarterback. So I'm not saying that is an excuse, but that's reality. You know, Caleb has had very little time and very little support from his running game. And I think the situation's been better in Washington, but you've got to let it breathe everybody. Caleb's going to make some mistakes. I'd point you the couple of them out, but then he's going to drop some throws on you that, you know, you really are excited about, especially as a rookie quarterback. So, you know, we live in a hot take society, guys. You know that. You know that everyone's going to make a long term conclusion on a short term, you know, body of work. You know, it's just, it's part of the part of the landscape. It's not good. It's a mistake cap. Kind of like the, the pirates first base been rounded to Les entered the day four played appearance as shy of a $200,000 bonus and it cut him about that. And they said it had nothing to do with it. What up. You heard that story, right? Tommy shame. Yes. Shame on Major League Baseball for allowing that kind of crap to happen. And that is something that the players association should think long and hard about. And it's just, it's, it's crazy what's going on in Major League Baseball. Like how the White Sox are going to get a check from the Illinois Sports Authority for not reaching 1.8 million people in the building, right? Correct. Yeah. Look. What's up. Really? Careful. Why not take that money and it's probably a couple million dollars and rebated to season ticket holders or give them a credit for next season if they want season tickets. It's a great idea. That is a great idea. I mean, like the pirates, this is what pisses me off about my own team in Cincinnati. The owner tells you, you're unhappy. So what? What are you going to do? You're going to go somewhere else? I mean, Major League Baseball, I think, got a problem with regards to allow how these, these owners are allowed to run their teams. Well said. Tommy, have a great day, man. We love you. Be good. Love you back. All right.
