Kody Clemens heroics walk off Rays | Jalen Hurts, Eagles turn to Week 2 opponent, Atlanta Falcons

Despite being no hit into the sixth inning, a combination of a Kyle Schwarber homerun, six shutout innings from Cristopher Sanchez, and a walk off winner for Kody Clemens was enough for the Phillies to get past the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 in the first game of a three game series. Plus, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles turn their attention to their week 2 opponent, the 0-1 Atlanta Falcons.

We've actually, we've made it five episodes. Tyler Zulu, my producer and contributor. We've made it five episodes, 'cause we started on Tuesday, not Monday. So we haven't been canceled yet. - Yeah, they haven't fired us yet, that's a good start, right? - We've lasted a week, yes, we have. You're more secure than me, because you're, of course, through PHLY Phillies, and all the big Penn State shows. Penn State nearly lost the Bowling Green over the weekend. All right, so, before we get into, we've got a lot of stuff to talk about here. Fran Duffy, the newest member here at PHLY, formerly fillfegals.com. He is our NFL analyst, Eagles analyst, and draft guru, he's gonna join us today 20, specifically, we're gonna talk a lot about Jalen Hertz and his performance, but what did the defense look like? What does this offense look like with Saquan Barkley now in the full with that trifecta man? So, Fran, he's dissected the film, he's taken notes, he's gonna join us coming up around 8.20. I was woke up, Tyler, I woke up this morning with a terrible headache, and when I say this morning, I really mean it like 1 a.m. I woke up like, oh my God, my head, I don't normally get headaches. So, I didn't take any medicine. I'm like, all right, let me just try to go back to sleep. My youngest woke me up at like two o'clock, so now I'm on the recliner with her, trying to get her back to sleep. I finally take some ibuprofen, bad headache, late start, couldn't find my keys, get into the car. So, I'm haphazardly throwing my stuff into my bag, and unfortunately, and I'm guilty of this, I'm a member of the Stanley, whatever you wanna call us, army. I'm embarrassed that our country has become where everybody has to have a Stanley or like you're not cool anymore. My kids have the big stanleys. I have the stupid Stanley. My wife has it. Damn thing like was open a little bit. I put it into my bag where my laptop is. I get out to the car. It's freaking leaking all over in the inside of the car. Now I gotta go get paper towels. I'm shopping up. I'm hoping the laptop's not freaking ruined. So, that was the start of my day. How are you, buddy? - John, I gotta ask you, is that enough of a warrant to have some whiskey or something at like six o'clock in the morning? This is a really crap start to the day. - Well, maybe something, you know, recreational lead that's out late on Jersey, but I wouldn't go to booze. But yeah, I mean, these, listen, these things are nice, but do I really need a $40? This is a weapon, by the way. My youngest has, she doesn't have a Stanley. She has a Yeti, and it's smaller. It's probably like half the size, and she swings it around like this. She dented my refrigerator, and I have a refrigerator, and it's less than a year old. She dented the bottom of the refrigerator with, and it's not coming. - That's incredible, actually. - With a Yeti, yeah, it's awesome. - My wife is, she's not into the name brand. She has one of those, but it's, you know, off brand or whatever. She doesn't care about that, but I find it, I do find it funny, like, she uses it in the house, which, to me, like, we have classes and mugs. - Oh, no, I use that. - And she uses it in the house, so you're like that as well. - So, like, I will only use one of those if I know I'm gonna be out for a long day, 'cause otherwise, I will either, and we have some bottled water in the house, or we have bottled water here. I'll take it from somewhere. I'll only use that if I know I'm gonna be out for a really long time. She uses it, like, just sitting on the couch. Like, we were watching the fills last night, and she's, you know, sipping on the Stanley knockoff. You do the same thing? - Yes. - I literally don't bring it out of the house, 'cause I'll leave it. It's also big, and it leaks. No, I get up in the morning. I put, I fill it up with ice, and then I pour water in it. - Okay. - And I drink the water all day. It's the only way I can drink water. You give me a bottle of water, I'll leave 'em all over the house, quarter drank, can't find it, open another one, drink a couple sis. - See, I was, when I was living at my mom's, especially, like, you know, in the end of the late teenage years, and then when I got back from college and living at my mom's, that was the thing that drove for the craziest. It was, I would just have, I'd bring water bottles up to my room, you know, you know, whatever. They would never leave the room. I would have hundreds of empty water bottles in my room. She's like, Tyler, it's the one thing you do that drives me insane. - Yeah, give me top three Stanleys right now. Off the top of your head. - Wow. - The Stanley drink. - Stanley, Stanley from the office. - Good one. - Now this is gonna be a personal one just because I was a kid when this movie came out. - First one's to come to your head. - Stanley, yell nats from holes. Do you remember the, did you just see your reed holes? Your kids are probably, you know, too young for holes. - Yeah, I don't know anything about that. - And then Stanley Kubrick is the other one, obviously. - Clockwork art and Stanley Kubrick's the real- - Full metal jacket. - The real actual like real life person, Stanley Kubrick. - Yeah, he's a total maniac. If you watch any of his movies, you know, he's a total maniac. How about this one? Stanley Steamer, Stanley Cup, Stanley Lord, I'd Lord Stanley, I was thinking of it also. Stanley Roper, which from the, from the Ropers. - I don't know that one. - Stanley. - I don't think I know that one. - Spin off from Three's company. - Okay. - The Ropers underrated, did last long underrated television sitcom, late '70s, early '80s. All right, down to my content so far from us. (laughing) So I'm watching the Monday Night Football game last night and it kind of sucked, right? I mean, the Jets took the early lead, but so Christian McCaffrey doesn't play. It comes down and more on this later. It comes down, I don't know, maybe 90 minutes or two hours before the game. I'm not even really sure, but I saw something. I'm like, oh, he's not playing, all right? So fantasy owners across the country sent it to a frenzy. Oh my God, what am I gonna do? So unless you had his backup or somebody else that could play in the game, right? You might have been screwed since the Monday Night Game. Jordan Mason came in and was, he was really good. He looked amazing, had almost 150 yards of a touchdown. But you know, Christian McCaffrey on the Niners is one of the best weapons in football. And he certainly is the straw that stirs the drink of that offense. Yeah, you have the bow, yeah, you have Ayuk. But like Christian McCaffrey has changed that offense since they traded for him. And now he's out of the game and he's not playing. And it didn't matter. Coming off a Super Bowl run, a training camp that had holdouts from Trent Williams to Ayuk. They just picked up where they left off. This is a really, really good team, the 49ers. So if you're looking at the NFC and how do you get back to the Super Bowl, you know, all indications are the Niners aren't taking a step back. People want to keep Poo Poo and Brock Purdy. If he was a first round draft pick, no one would be saying this because he's a seventh round draft pick. The dude's legit. And I hate saying it because I can't stand the Niners and I can't stand that whole media people out there or whatever. But like Niners are legit. And if there was ever a game where you could have said, you know what? It was just one of these games, the CMC injury, all the stuff in the offseason coming off the appearance in the Super Bowl. And the Jets, meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers, last year he played three snaps or whatever. And then coming back this year, it's really kind of a statement game and a game by the Jets. Like, yeah, we're going to be what we thought last year. Well, the game wasn't even competitive. Aaron Rodgers was out in the fourth quarter. They took him out because I think it was 32 to 13 or whatever. So the Niners are legit. We knew that they're really, really talented. But it's really tough to do it year after year. And you saw what happened to the Eagles last year they fell apart. Niners aren't going anywhere. So Niners win last night. And the Lions and like before came back Sunday night. So you look at the top teams in the NFC, Lions with a great comeback. Niners with a dominant performance last night. And the Eagles, I'll say with an excellent performance on Friday night, so three prime time games, the top three teams in the NFC all looked really good. And I'll say it looks really good. That offense looked really good. We'll talk about over Fran coming up here in about 10 minutes. But let's bring Tyler Zoule back and let's get an update on what happened last night. What's in the news there, Tyler? Yeah, it depends on what game you watched. It depends on if you had a whole lot of fun last night or not. I will say this, the Phillies game for a bulk of it was not particularly fun yesterday. But spoiler alert, in case you didn't hear or see yet, they did end up winning this game. We'll get to the victory in just a second. Christopher Sanchez, six strong innings yesterday. No help to show for it. He went six innings of shutout baseball. Change up looked really good. Fastball velocity was up a little bit. He looked like he was poised in in command. He goes six innings of a shutout ball. But it was actually the Tampa Bay Rays, whose pitching staff was the headline of the first five plus innings. Phillies didn't have a hit through five and five plus, actually, five and a third to be exact before Kyle Schwerber stepped up and not only got the Phillies into the hit column, but got them on the run into the run column of the solo shot. Trey Turner follows up with a base hit. Bryce Harper wipes both of them with a double play, but the Phillies do get one, one nothing heading into the ninth. Really good pitching performances from Orion Kirkring. Jeff Hoffman worked out of trouble like we expected him to. Carlos Estevas comes in for the save. A really weird, unfortunate play ball hit to the wall. Johan Rojas gets there, gets a glove on it. It tips off the glove. It goes over the wall, kind of a flooky play for the fellas. You know, I think more times than not, Johan Rojas is bringing that back, and the Phillies probably win this game one nothing, but he doesn't. It goes into extras, or excuse me, it goes into the bottom of the ninth, I should say, at 1-1. And Phillies do a really good job of putting some pressure on the Rays pitching staff. Buddy Kennedy works an incredible played appearance to draw a walk to load the bases for a guy that is becoming a cult hero before our eyes, upstepped Cody Clemens. Normally, we like to play some of the game sound, but I thought the natural sound of this game actually works a little bit better for this moment, because, Jon, what you heard right before Cody Clemens stepped to the plate was Phillies fans at Citizens Bank Park chanting, "Buddy, buddy, buddy," for Buddy Kennedy's at bat. - Oh, man. - Quickly changed, however, to Cody, as Cody Clemens stepped to the plate. This is what it sounded like from inside Citizens Bank Park. (crowd cheering) - Obviously, the fanfare and festivities that go with it, but it was a really cool moment for Buddy Kennedy. He said it's something he'll never forget. And then Cody Clemens, really? Like I said, I used it kind of facetiously, but he is kind of becoming like a cult classic here. - How many big hits has he had this year? - A ton. - In limited time, too. He's back down in AAA, kind of more of a numbers game than anything else. The Phillies are a really good team. He's a better major league player than he is a AAA. I mean, legitimately, every championship team or every good team that you see, you get guys that step up. Different guys are stepping up. Cody Clemens, I don't know how many times this year with walk-offs, with home runs, has, he's really been incredible. And the Buddy Kennedy game from last night, it was a really good hit bat. He's a AAA guy. I believe he's had some time in the majors. - Yeah, he was with the Diamondbacks for a little bit of a spent time in Arizona. - So yeah, good teams find the way to win games and the Phillies did last night. The Rays use that stupid opener. I hate the opener, but that's what they have to do to try to win games. - I get why they do it, especially when you're pitching staff. Not as strong as you'd like it to be. Do you get a sense as a fan of an opposing team when the team you're facing runs out an opener and then a bulk guy? I almost have this overarching sense of like, you have to win this game. I don't know why that is because there's still major league pitchers, but it's just something about a groove setting where the starter is only going, the opener is only going one inning most of the time. - Yeah, I hate it. - Maybe two or facing six hitters or whatever it is. But I almost get this like sense as a fan and this is strictly a fandom thing where your team should win that game when you're facing an opener. - See, I feel like that you don't have any other option and you suck and that's why you're putting an opener out there. Now Tampa Bay's used it very well over the years, like you had said, because of what's their payroll, like $40 million a year or something like that. - Yeah, something ridiculous. - Yeah, so they're using analytics and they're figuring out a way, the nerds have figured out a way to win games down there. But I hate it and Major League Baseball is going to get rid of it. They're coming up with new rules, they're trying to get new rules where. - Do you think so? - Oh, they definitely are. They're working on it right now. - The six inning thing is going to be totally-- - But that's what I like. Listen, if you have a starter that comes out and he sucks, all right, you can take him out of the game, but having a relief guy coming for the first inning, I hate it. And I think baseball does too. You're starting pitchers supposed to be your starting pitcher. Starting pitchers used to be stars in Major League Baseball. Now teams still like, oh, we'll just use an opener for the games, I hate it. Hopefully that's gone. But Schorber with a monster, he breaks up the no hitter with a monster home run. I dig his reaction when he hits the monster shots. - He is. - He knows. - Man. - And we know. The balls that he hits that are the no doubters just explode off his bat. It's incredible. - Oh, man, they really do. And this is, again, you had said this yesterday and I have to remind myself of this because the Phillies give me such great anxiety. They're, the win kept them seven games up because I guess the Mets won last night, the Mets are the Braves won last night. I saw they were slow. - Yeah, the Mets won last night. I said this last night on the post-game show just at this point, just assume that the Mets have won on any given evening. And then, you know, change course, you know, as you see fit. They're nine and one in their last 10. They're playing some incredibly inspired baseball. And it kind of brings us closer and closer to the conversation of are they overtaking, you know, have they officially overtaken the Braves for potentially that last wild card? - Yeah, they have. - I mean, as of right now, of course, statistically they have. But, you know, from like a mental vibes standpoint, they're riding high. The Braves are kind of crashing. - Is it too early to be playing this hot? Because this, you want to be playing like this, heading into the playoffs. And to me, it doesn't feel like that it's too early. To me, it feels like it's the right time. And we've seen the last two years, the Diamondbacks last year, a lot like the Mets this year. I'm curious to see what their record is right now. Probably even not as many wins as the Mets. And the Phillies the year before. The Mets are a dangerous team. I'm telling you again, it's the anxiety of being a Phillies fan. You look at it September 10th and you're like, "Oh man, I don't want to be the team "that has a comfortable lead "and is going to get a buy in everything." Because that hasn't worked the last two years, Tyler. - I get it. And I understand the like the rest versus rust type of thing. I am a proponent of like, screw that, go and clench your division, clench the buy. Do what you need to do to make this comfortable for you. Because right now, the way for this Phillies team specifically, they are really, really banged up. We know Boam hit the I.L. a couple of days ago at Mundo Sosas on the I.L. Austin Hayes has been on the I.L. They're to a point where the guy that they would call up to be their backup catcher in Rafael Marchan, after J.T's missing some time, he's on the I.L. They had to go to Aramis Garcia to bring him up. They're kind of, they're kind of banged up right now. And so if you can continue to create separation for yourself, not only win the division, but also get to a point where you've clenched that at least the two seed, you get to a point where maybe Bryce Harper can take a couple of natural days off, right? Without having to hit the I.L. Alec Boam can maybe take his time getting back. J.T. Real Mundo will get a couple of starts off. And then your pitching staff too. If you're worried about guys like Ranger Suarez, who are still back from injury, Christopher Sanchez, who's in his real like first true season as a starting pitcher, you're worried about capacity with him. You know, all of these things I think work out well for you to say, you know, just keep your foot on the gas. And if you have to be another team that falls victim to, well, we didn't play in four days, quite frankly, that's on you more than it is on the setup of the game. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, listen, it's such a long season. And you hope you hope the Phillies right now are getting healthy as opposed to right and then getting ready for the playoffs as opposed to limping in with these injuries. So we'll see. It's, man, it's such a long season. You forget how excruciating, even with a really good team, baseball seasons could be. Those are the best record in baseball. 162 games is a lot. (laughs) And I'm like, I'm acting like they're fighting for their calling for their playoff lives. I do want to ask you real quick, because I've gotten this comment a couple times now. If I told you over the last 124 played appearance, the guy's been on base 47 times and he's slashing 313, 389, 446. You happy with that? Yeah, because that's Bryce Harper over the last 127 out of played appearances. Yeah. And I know people are worried about the power. It's been sapped, there's no doubt about it. But I've apparently become like the Bryce Harper apologists of this station, which doesn't quite make a whole lot of sense to me because yes, I know he hasn't hit a home run in like nearly a month. But the guy is hitting the baseball well. He's hitting over 300, his OBP is close to 400. His slugging's near five, despite the fact that he doesn't have a home run in almost a month. The power, the power zap is legit. Also, for sure, he's not 100% healthy. You know what else I think, what else I think it, what makes it feel probably worse than it is, like you had mentioned it earlier. Bryce Harper, the double play. He said, he said the double plays that are memorable. Not that last night was like a huge deal, but still, I don't know, I love Bryce Harper. I'm concerned about the wear and tear in the injuries, but he hasn't, he's not betting 140 in the last month. That's what I mean. Like if he was hitting, you're right, he has hit into a couple double plays. They've crossed the 100 double play threshold for the season. There was a stretch where they hit into like, I don't know, 12 in like a 10-game stretch or something along those lines. It was, you know, they had almost two-week stretch where they hit into at least one every game. With that being said, it's a different form of productivity. It's not gaps. It's not gap to gap. It's not, you know, long ball, you know, type of stuff, but I'm not gonna argue results. Results are there still. If he was struggling, you'd have to pull him out of the lineup. Results are still there. Yeah, well, listen, we'll see. I need a little bit more productivity of him in the playoffs for sure. All right. Fran Duffy is gonna join us coming up here in one second. But hey, listen, let's talk about a true mark credit card. Listen, a lot of people like to go to the away games for all the Philly teams, right? And we have a baseball run that's coming up here. All right, well, we were talking after yesterday's show and I'm like, I need to know how Jalen Hertz played. I want to know how the rest of the team played. So let's go to our ace. One of the newest members of PHLY in all city. Just like me, I think you have a month or excuse me, a week of tenure ahead of me. He is the great friend Duffy, PHLY and all city NFL analyst and draft guru. What's up, Fran? Johnny Marks, what's happening, man? Yeah, I've got about a week on you. So we're both new to the club here. And I knew you were going to be announced and I knew I was going to be announced like later that week or whatever. So great to finally be able to work with you. I've been an admirer for a long time. You worked with Ike, my former co-host for a long time. So, and you're the best. So this is really, really cool. Congratulations and I look forward to working with you. No, absolutely YouTube, man. I'm obviously, you and I have known each other for a long time and so being able to now work together is going to be a lot of fun. It's going to be a great season. All right, now I'm a little bit concerned that you're still a little bit close to since your work for the Eagles for so long. That you may still be a little bit close when you give your analysis on the team. And I'm 3/4 kidding when I say that. But all right, so let's talk about Jalen Hurts. I felt like he had a lot of good moments and then everybody's going to point to the interceptions. And also, there was at least two other balls that could have been intercepted. But with everything from the game, you watched it live, you rewatched it, you looked at the film. How would you evaluate Jalen Hurts' game as a whole? I thought it was probably like an above average performance from Jalen Hurts' standards. Obviously, the two interceptions were tough plays to be able to accept, right? Because there were in areas of the field where you don't want an interception to happen. When you're backed up in your own end to throw a pick there, that's almost as bad as taking a safety, right? Because you're setting up the other team for a potential touchdown on a short field. Now the defense bailed them out there by holding them into a field goal. The other one, it's third down in the red zone where if you were able to play for the next play and kick a field goal, you take an eight-point lead and obviously, at worst, you're allowing a tie situation. The next time Green Bay has the football. And so both plays, you're looking at that and you're saying, we can't have an interception in that area. Now, after going back and watching the film, I felt a little bit more at ease on both plays for one reason with each play. On the first one, landed Dickerson was pushed back into Jalen's lap. And you could see Landon after the play. This was, remember, this was the opening possession. He's looking down at his cleats. He got pushed back. I said it to Anne yesterday, John, where you could almost tell. Like, it looked like Landon was wearing sneakers on an ice skating rink. He was sliding back in the pocket and Landon's looking down at his cleats afterwards. Like, what the hell, what just happened? And then on the second interception, AJ slipped in the end zone after the ball was thrown. And so it's a cardinal sim for a quarterback to throw late in the middle of the field across your body. You don't want to do that, right? That said, AJ was wide open. He throws the ball, AJ slips. He doesn't make the play on it that he's expecting to. And then you have the interception. So overall, those are negative plays. There was the near pick six on the play before that second interception, right? And that, honestly, was the most egregious decision of the three, in my opinion. And so to me, there were those three plays. But then after that, I thought that he showed pretty good command of the offense. Obviously, there's a lot of different things on his plate this year that he's not accustomed to on top of the new terminology in the passing game. And so I'm willing to accept a little bit of a grace period here with Jalen Hurts. I did not expect him to come out firing on all cylinders with the offense operating at like 100% peak level right out of the box. - Yeah, the second interception, I had saw, Baldi broke it down. He put the video out on social media. And you see, he was wide open and he did, he slipped. Now, if he slips, he can probably break it up at very worst case to where it's not an interception. It's not the same play for sure if he doesn't slip. So it was actually good to see that. I still don't know if it's worth your throwing across your body, your up five points, a field goal makes it an eight point game. Now a touchdown puts the game away. So, but third and 13, coming off where you nearly through a pick six, if AJ doesn't slip, yeah, he sees a wide open AJ Brown. So it's hard for me to say you don't throw that. He was wide open. Now maybe you throw it a little bit harder, you don't put as much air under it. But yeah, it, going back and watching the film, I saw Baldi put it out there. It does, it does make you feel a little bit different about that play. He was so good at protecting the ball in 2022. Jalen was, last year, made a lot of bad throws that he wasn't making the year before, wasn't protecting the ball as much and 15 interceptions. Now through two games, I mean, he's just taking more chances. Fred, it's one thing if you're a Josh Allen, who's trying to fit the ball in tight windows and has such a huge arm to wear. Like Brett Farve, he used to, his biggest problem was he thought he could make every throw. Jalen's never been that guy. I guess I just worry about the mental mistakes and throws that it seems like he's been making in game number one and then what you saw last year. - I think the big thing, John, is that, you know, when you look at the way that they played in 2022, where that was a high flying offense, a lot of vertical deep shots down the sideline, Devontay Smith, AJ Brown, it's fireworks, left and right, seemingly every single week in the first half of games and then they're running to win. Miles Sanders runs for nearly 1,300 yards that season. A lot of that production came in the second half of games as the team was nursing leads. It was just a perfect scenario, a perfect ecosystem for offensive success. And I think when you go to next year in 2023, you know, some of the, I don't want to say luck, but at some point, things start going the other way, right? Things are going to regress back to the mean, regress back to the average. And so you started getting some of those interceptions that came back and then obviously things kind of snowballed towards the end of the second half of the season from a, you know, from an offensive standpoint, whether it was the pressure getting to him, some of the things where they were kind of forcing the issue late in games, they didn't have the same situation in terms of having to lead at halftime, they had to throw more late in games. And so I think when you get into some of that stuff, the turnovers, yeah, that was an issue for him last year. But to me, the bigger one was like the fumbles. He was putting the ball on the ground a lot last year. We saw two fumbles in the game the other day. They've got to be able to take care, better care of the football that way. That was the weird thing about it though, was that when we talked about this on the post game show, the other night, myself, Bo Wolf, Jamie Lynch, and Vinny Curry is that with Jalen Hertz, there was those kinds of interceptions where you're looking at like, what kind of decision was that? That is doing the outlier. He typically has not had an issue with decision making over the course of his career. Sometimes, yeah, it's a bad throw. Those happen to all quarterbacks. But typically, we haven't seen him make bad decisions. And so for me, going into it, looking at it from that standpoint, I said, okay, I'm willing to kind of throw that away and say, let's keep this in mind for down the road and see if this continues to be an issue. But that has not historically been a problem for Jalen in the past. - Last year, once the after the Niners game, the template was kind of made like, hey, blitz them, blitz them up the middle. Don't let them escape up the middle. Keep them within the tackles. And Eagles didn't really have an answer for it last year. He was among the most blitz quarterbacks in the NFL. What did the Packers do? And how did the Eagles perform against the blitz on Friday night? - Yeah, they blitzed depending on what service you look at, seven, eight, nine times. They didn't reach double digits, which I expected them to blitz a little bit more than they did. But it might be because Jalen hurts was so effective against the blitz that they decided, hey, you know what, let's pull it back a little. Now, the one caveat I will present, John, is that he was especially bad last year down the stretch against cover zero blitzes, against all out pressure, where it was, you know, no safety help and a straight match ending more than you can block as an offense. That's where this offense really, really struggled. The Packers did not do that once. That's a little surprising to me. I would have expected that, especially, you know, the first drive, second drive, that you would have seen some kind of cover zero pressure just to kind of test it and see, hey, did you guys fix the problems that you had last year? But that said, with the blitzes that they did see, Jalen, I thought, was very decisive with the football. He did a really good job knowing where his answers were in the offense, and that's not something that was present last year. And really, what that ultimately comes down to is, you know, you've got five eligible receivers in any given play. Understanding, hey, if I get pressure, this is my answer to that, right? This is where I go if I feel like I'm gonna be blitzed. So, you know, in the offense last year, they didn't always have that. It wasn't always clear or evident on the film or where Jalen was supposed to go at the top of this drop if he was getting blitzed. In this one, you could see, hey, you know what? There's a pressure coming from my right side. I'm gonna go to AJ Brown on the left and it goes for 20 yards. Hey, there's pressure coming from this side. The linebackers rotating across my face in front of me. I'm gonna attack the void. Here's Grant Calvertara for a first down. And so, just having those answers built within the structure of the scheme and then Jalen understanding this is where I have to go, that was one of my biggest revelations from going back and watching the film. - Yeah, he looked good. Seqwon Barkley probably should have led with this being positive that the Eagles did win the game, a TO debut for Seqwon Barkley. And beyond that, 'cause we know he's talented and he had a great game, you get to peek at what it's gonna do for the offense because now teams are likely to key more on Seqwon being that he just had three touchdowns, which is gonna open things up for AJ Brown, Devanthi Smith, who had big games as it was, Dallas Goddard, what Seqwon Barkley can do for this offense, friend, make some one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL, for sure. - Yeah, yesterday on allPHLY.com, I dropped my offensive breakdown from looking at the film. And one of the things I hit on in there is just how many light boxes Seqwon Barkley saw in this game against Green Bay and how that was far, that was much different from what he had seen in years past with the New York Giants. And that's really what we would talk about when the Eagles signed Seqwon this spring, right? Was that he goes from being at the top of the game plan for opposing defenses on a weekly basis to third, fourth, fifth on the pecking order. When you look at AJ Brown, Devanthi Smith, the Jalen Hurts rushing attack, Dallas Goddard, you have all these other weapons that you have to account for. And so it's tough to just say, you know what, we're gonna load the box against Seqwon Barkley and stop this rushing attack. And so what really stood out to me, and it's almost like the Blitz plan with Jalen Hurts, what I was most interested to see with Seqwon Barkley, we know he's a super gifted runner, right? We know he's big, he's explosive, he's got the ability to hit the home run, but would he be disciplined enough to be able to carry out runs and stay within structure? Because that's always been something that has been a little bit of a bugaboo for him. Going back to his days at Penn State, he was always kind of hunting for that big play, and he would be a little bit quick at times to bounce outside, it'd be somewhat like what Miles Sanders was like here in Philadelphia when we knocked Miles at times. The difference was that Seqwon is just so much more gifted, he was bigger and more explosive and more powerful. And so he had the ability to get away with that at a little bit of a higher rate. I'll tell you what, I was so excited about what I saw from Seqwon in this game. I thought he'd run more disciplined than what I've seen from him in the path, he stayed downhill, he was able to run behind his pads and pick up dirty yards. This was a really, really good sign for this offense and for this run game that he was able to run the way he did and then the production on top of it, especially in the past game, that was also the cherry on top. - Man, it brings such a different dynamic to this team, having a guy with the skill set and the home run potential. The run, the touch stack, I think the first touchdown run were one of them, where he, I mean, the linebacker was right there in the hole to tackle him and he kind of just did a quick juke and boom, right in there for the touchdown, the Barkley burst, but a long time since we've seen talent like that at the running back position. All right, quickly, the defense, Seqwon looks legit. He was all over the field, Sacks, tackles for losses, quarterback hits. We haven't seen an impact linebacker like this since, is this the best line backing performance? And I know it's only one game, but potentially since, since when? The Super Bowl year with, with what's his name? Very impressive. - Not out of, yeah. - This has a chance for, yeah, it's a 1.6 million dollar one year deal. This has a real potential to be one of these Howie moves where it's like, wow, what a steal. So I mean, that's overall how did you see the defense and how impressed were you with Bond? - Yeah, I thought Bond had a really good debut and what was most impressive about it is that this is a position that is not exactly something that he's been well schooled in. He's been kind of bouncing back and forth between being an edge rusher in Odd Front. So lining up off the tackle, off the tight end, to being a stacked linebacker was the most stacked reps he got in a game in like four or five years. And so I think when you look at Zach Bond, certainly you expect that the arrow's gonna be pointing up. 15 tackles, two sacks. That's a tough box score, a tough stat line to be able to replicate. I will say, again, it is just one game. We saw Nicholas Morrow have three sacks in the game last year and got really excited and he was dreadful for the rest of the season. And so you're hoping that you don't go down that path with Zach Bond, but I thought we saw some good things from him and from the Kobe Dean. Honestly, I actually felt even a little bit more encouraged from what we saw from the Kobe as well, just because to me, that was the most that we've seen from him so far that looked like what he was at Georgia, which he was just playing loose, he was playing fast, finding the football, he blows up the screen, he's in position to get that pick six, he was decisive downhill against the run. So for me, like week one, you had to feel good about both linebackers coming out of that one. - Yeah, and the Kobe, he like, how do you know if a player is playing well if you notice him when you're watching the games, right? And that's not really something you've seen with the Kobe. He kind of gets lost. And you're like, how many snaps did he have? Like hit them? He did, you notice them. He made some plays there. Quickly on the defensive line, the one thing that I really worry about Fran is getting pressure on the quarterback from your defensive line without blitzing, in particular from your ends. Nolan Smith didn't give you much. Huff didn't give you much. And Brandon Grant played about the same amount of snaps, a little bit more snaps than the two. I thought he was supposed to be a part-time player. Joshua had an okay game. How was the play of the line, the tackles and the ends in particular who really didn't have a whole lot of productivity in week one? - Yeah, for me, this was a difficult one to be able to watch both sides of the football in the line of scrimmage. And this goes for both teams because it was very clear that players had issues trying to adjust to the playing surface, right? And I mentioned Landon Dickerson trying to get his cleats in the ground. We saw a Vante Maddox falling left and right all night long. Jordan Love, the quarterback for the Packers, he never looked settled. Every single time he hit the top of his drop, you could see his right foot slide as he's trying to plant it in the ground. And so it affected some players more than others, but I felt watching the tape that the guys in the line of scrimmage in the tackle box were most effective. And they just struggled with the guys that were trying to move forward and get push off the football. Just did not do that at a super high rate overly effectively. And so I think when you're looking at the guys on the offensive line and the defensive line, I'm willing to give them a little bit of a mulligan here. That said, I mean, you mentioned the Ed Drushers, you know, Jordan Davis, going into Sunday's slate. I looked as if just from the first two games. So Chiefs Ravens, Thursday night, Eagles Packers on Friday night, there were a bunch of defensive linemen that had at least 19 pass rush naps. Jordan Davis was the only one that did not record a pressure of that group, right? So it's one of those things where you're hoping to see more from those guys. But I am willing to give them a little bit of a mulligan considering the playing surface. It's like trying to grade the snowball back in 2014 or if like, all right, I don't want to kill guys too bad for his performance. Let's see what they look like next Monday night against Atlanta. - It's good insight on the turf. It is. Do they have a Brazilian sod father? Or is this the, I know that regular sod father had retired apparently. Yeah, I don't listen, man. I don't know how for the NFL. You don't have a, you have the playing surface. It's like that. I just don't, I don't know. I don't know how you don't have somebody there, weeks in advance, making sure the turf's okay. - It was one of those things. I reached out to a bunch of people over the weekend just to kind of get their thoughts on it. 'Cause it kind of blows my mind, especially with what happened with the Eagles in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, right? That you would make sure, okay, we're good to go. And there was reports from ESPN and from other national outlets that, hey, they brought down their head of their ground screw and they walked through on the stadium the day before and everything felt good. From what I understand, it's like, hey, it's tough to replicate game speed with those guys out in the field. And soccer players are playing on that turf all the time, on that grass all the time. But soccer players, it's a more like graceful, like long distance kind of movement that you're, you know, you're those guys are running up and down the field constantly. With football, it's more about explosive, violent turf. So every contact with the ground, it's a little bit different. So your cleats are interacting with that grass and with that dirt a little bit differently. And so it was tough to replicate. And obviously the guys, for the most part, struggled to adjust something better than others. And we saw Saquan Barkley split on that first carry of the night. And then he didn't really have any issues after that. But others, like I mentioned, like Vontay Maddox and Jordan Love and others were struggling throughout the evening. So it's definitely something to keep in mind. Next time there's an international camp. - Well, you can catch friend Duffy all over the platform here on with Anthony, we all with us here on Philly Philly with John Marks on the Eagle Show, P-H-O-Y, Eagles post-game, pre-game too. I mean, they got you, they got you all over the place there, Franny. - We're doing halftime shows, we got it all. So all things Eagles, we got you covered here at all P-H-O-Y. - The pride of Cheltenham High School, I would say probably the most famous alum or in the top three of Reggie Jackson who probably is a top three, but got to start a temple. Did not notice about your friend. You were the team's video coordinator, hired by Al Golden back in the Golden days. And then Matt Roll went from the Eagles from there. Do the Al still have a football team I haven't seen this year, how they're doing. - Yeah, it's been rough sledding in the last few years. They made some hires a couple of years ago that didn't go all that well. And so they're trying to dig out of that now. I do like to stand straight in the new head coach, but certainly an uphill climb at this point. So we'll see how things shake out this year. - The results are the results. Frank, congratulations, love having you here. And we'll talk to you again next week. And we'll be watching you and everything you're doing here on the network. Thank you. - Sounds good, thanks John. - All right, buddy, there he is, Fran Duffy. - Yep, 20 year old video coordinator the Al's breaking down film. - About that. - When I was 20, I was making the cheesesteaks and hogies. - I was, I think I was an usher at the Bryce Jordan Center making money. - Were you really? - Yeah, it was my beer money. Kidding mom, it was my grocery money. - Right, yeah, yeah, yeah. - Yeah, you know, it was, you know, you'd go on like a Tuesday night. And the cool thing was for a lot of it, you know, most of the time, you know, if you wanted to see the show, it's a lot of good shows. State college gets ridiculously good shows for no reason. - Yeah, they're on the, they're on the circuit, yeah. - You know, I saw some really cool, I saw, over the years, like I saw Bruce Springsteen, I saw Jay Z, I saw Garth Brooks, I saw a couple of different rock bands. - Poison? - Not poison. I think Shine Down was in there. But it was, it was, I mean, listen, it's a, I got paid to watch to see live concerts, so it really wasn't too bad. - Oh, there you go. - Not as good of a job as video coordinator for a division one football program, the outside. - Well, I'd say that's a pretty good job. You got to see, 'cause who wouldn't want to see you Springsteen live? Me. - Oh, you're not a Springsteen guy, are you? - I don't care, Springsteen's fine. It's the fans that are annoying. - I don't... - There's way too many artists like that 'cause I feel the exact same way about the band, Tool. - Really, Tool? - Tool is ridiculously talented, but Tool fans are tools. No pun intended, but yeah. - But Z, you're a metal head. So this is very inside for you. - All right, 'cause I've heard of Tool, I may know a Tool song or whatever. I didn't realize there was this whole inner tool oil. - Well, so here's the thing with Tool. They're a super, super talented band, like just gifted beyond belief, but their fans have this holier than thou feel to it, where it's like, you don't understand syncopation and odd time signatures and blah, blah, blah. It's like, dude, I just like music. You know what I mean? All of us are music savants. - Right. - And the whole fan base is just like, yeah, the Tool's the greatest ever. - Like you said, they must be tools. - Drives me nuts. - They must be tools. - All right, coming up in a second, Jason Kelsey's debut on Monday night countdown, but listen, if you're a... He made his Monday night countdown debut. And let me say this, I love Jason Kelsie. I think Jason Kelsie's a great dude. And he's very talented and he's funny in everything else. I worry that he's going to get to a point of overexposure with Travis and Taylor Swift and the podcast and Monday night countdown. And I mean, Jesus have you watched the football game that didn't have commercials with the Kelsey brothers, right? And I'm not going to tell you that it's starting to get annoying, but I'm thinking about it starting to get annoying. If I didn't, if I wasn't a Jason Kelsie fan and an Eagles fan, I probably would think that it would already be annoying. So anyway, like good for Jason. He's going to be very, very successful in his post-playing career, but it feels like that we're maybe getting, Tyler, a little bit close to people fighting back against it. I think an oversaturation of anybody is going to drive you like to the opposite side of how you feel about them. I felt that way about, you know, certain actors and certain musical artists. I felt that way about me sometime, right? Like nobody wants to see me all the time. My wife doesn't want to see me all the time. - That's for sure. - You know what I mean? Like, you know, like an oversaturation of things just becomes an unfortunate side effect of success and, you know, you know, operating under like a, "Hey, this works for us. Let's continue to use it. "I don't blame you. You're going to make a ton of money off of it." I think oversaturation of anybody is, can become a bad thing. - Well, I made his debut on Monday Night Countdown, and I think he's going to be, and I didn't watch a ton of it, but I think it's, it's Spears, right? It's Marcus Spears. It's Ryan Clark. - Yes. - And it's Jason Kelsie, and I think they will have really good chemistry and have fun, because you're not looking for a boring pre-game show or post-game show. You're looking for personality. That's why, like, the Fox show has had personality. Terry Brad's all, you know, I don't even know if he knows what he's talking about anymore. But it's personality-based. Jason Kelsie, I think, is perfect for it, and he certainly knows his football. So here's a video from last night. Apparently, he forgot his bag, his luggage on the flight, so he had to go to some store and buy a shirt. So here's what you saw last night on ESPN. - Future gold jacket, where he got a podcast and apparently he's doing fairly well. And all that said, Jason Kelsie is wearing a shirt. He got it the way he left his travel bag in the truck. - At the bag in the truck. - My, uh, that's my belly now. I've lost a little bit of weight, but my tints are still... - [laughs] - I struggle. - Hey, the fact that Hall of Fame Center can shop at Lulu Limit, that's me, man. That's a big accomplishment. - Yep, already being called Hall of Famer by two of them, and he will, for sure. Yep, is it hashtag no filter with Jason Kelsie? Or is he just not know what's, that's quote unquote, appropriate to say on TV? - Yeah, I mean, I know it's not like, it's not, that is not, I don't believe it's like an FCC. - It's not. - Regulated word, but I'm curious to see if ESPN says, hey, maybe word that in a different way. - Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's obviously not a huge deal, but it's just not something that you normally hear anybody say on any pre-game show around TV, so. But, I mean, look good, he pulls off the pink, right? And he did look noticeably, like he had lost probably 20 pounds. A lot of these offensive linemen, and Baldi is, Baldi's a big dude, but you know, Baldi had to put on weight to play, you know what I mean? - Sure. - You get these offensive, like Todd Harrim is another example, where they're bulking up because they need to be an offensive lineman or to play. - Right, guys like Brian Dawkins, Brian Dawkins is now built like a linebacker. He was smaller in his playing days. He's much bigger right now, but other guys lose weight. And Kelsey seems like, well, it seems like he's lost. - Good 20 pounds though. - I think the biggest example of it is Joe Thomas. I mean, Joe Thomas, he's like shredded. Like he lost all of the linemen weight, but he's still working out like he was playing. He's just in amazing shape. - Yeah, my, at least one of my daughters I'd like to marry somebody in an athletic family. Like I would tell Ben Davis, like you're gonna, one of your sons has to marry my daughter so I can get some athleticism and size in my family. As a grandfather, it'd be nice to actually be like, wow, this kid may actually play football, or my, not that my kids aren't gonna be playing and not be good athletes, but. - Well, I will say this. So I've said this to my wife before. My wife was a division one athlete. I am, yeah, yeah, she was. She played softball. She was division one athlete. I am barely passable at like the adult men's reckless level. I've said this to my wife plenty of times. So my wife is an incredible athlete. She is just not very tall. - Right. - I've said this to her so many times where I really, really hope for, if our kids wanna play sports and be athletic, they get your skill set and my height. - Right. - 'Cause I'm tall, but I'm built like a, you know. - Yeah, yeah. - A string bean. My wife is an incredible athlete. It always has been her brother played D1 football. Really good athlete, family, right? But I'm like, if we want our kids to be, you know, really good athletes, I really hope that they get your skill set. - Oh dude, you're set. - No, you're set. Between both of you, your kids are gonna be built to be athletes. - True. I hope so. - I mean, but listen, as they always say, I just want them to be happy, want them to do what's best for them. - All right, so check this out. A bleep storm was happening after the game, the Monday Night Football game last night. So you don't have Christian McCaffrey on your fantasy team. - I don't because I didn't have the number one pick in the draft this year. - Right. So if you have a number one pick and you're guys injured, a lot of times your season's over and this isn't gonna be long term. It might be more than this 'cause I don't know if anybody knew he wasn't gonna play. But not just win the game. Jordan Mason, the backup, 29 carries 147 yards and a touchdown. So if you had Mason and McCaffrey, then you're in pretty good shape. But here was the problem. So no one really knew, I know I was caught off guard that he wasn't playing. I just thought, 'cause we were led to believe, "Yeah, he's fine, it's the calf injury, he's fine." Then he's not playing, he's inactive before the game. So it's like, "Wow, all right, well that's crazy." So on Friday, they have an injury report on Friday, injury report on Saturday. He wasn't listed as questionable on Friday. On Saturday, he was listed as questionable. And then boom, all of a sudden, he's not playing. After the game, Jordan Mason, who just had the game of his life on national football, is asked by Lisa Salters on the field. Like, "Hey man, when did you know you was gonna be playing?" Here's the, here's Jordan Mason on ESPN after the game. How did you find out that you were gonna be sorry? - When I found out, maybe Friday, Friday night, something like that. I was always, I was afraid, I mean, we wouldn't be training you. You know, I was, I'd be wanting to train you, so you know, just being prepared for me. - So if he was told he was starting on Friday, and not before the game, that's a problem. That's a problem with the NFL. That's a problem because of gambling. I get it that these coaches never wanna divulge whether players are playing or they're not. They try to hide injuries. But in the modern day of the NFL with gambling, with prop bets, with everything being legalized in almost every state, it's more important than ever that you have to be a little bit more transparent. And it's one thing to try to kind of hide an injury knowing that a player is not playing on Friday night and not allowing that information to be released till Monday, in my opinion, is a big problem with the NFL. So he lets the cat out of the bag right there. So Kyle Shanahan after the game is asked about it. Now, this is gonna fall directly on him. And I don't think the NFL's really gonna do anything because they don't wanna make a big deal of this. But here's Shanahan. I don't know if he knew the question was coming. He probably did. But here's Shanahan after the game. - I never told Jordan he was gonna start. Told me he had to be ready a bunch, but I might've been Bobby or somebody trying to pump him up, but I knew he was gonna have to play a lot. Told him that he was gonna have to, wasn't gonna be like usual. There was gonna be a number two back. It was splitting a lot of the time. But now you didn't know if you were sure it was doing that till the day. - Right. So, you know, Shanahan's not gonna go up there and admit, like, yeah, we didn't give the information out there or whatever. Yeah, it's a tough spot because you don't wanna announce your best player and one of the best offensive weapons in the game isn't playing. But again, there's the gambling side with things. It would be pretty clear that they knew on Friday that McCaffrey wasn't playing, right? Tyler, wouldn't you agree? I would think so. I mean, if I think Mason was telling the truth, that's what he was told was probably Friday, "Hey, you're the guy." And then, "Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, no, no, no, no." - Not realizing you shouldn't say it. - Right, don't say, right. I think they kind of set him up to fail. - Agreed. - Because they didn't, you know, give him the understanding of, "Hey, listen, you're the dude, but like, don't say that until, you know, we get to the point." Because obviously, we didn't, you know, injury report designation, McCaffrey, you didn't say doubtful, or questionable, or whatever. You have to, as an organization, go, "Hey, listen, you're the guy, but just don't say anything." I found out today, you know, Christian's a little banged up, you know, they told me today I was gonna go. - Right, meanwhile, he's just answering a question. He's inexperienced, he's in the second year in the league. Like, he doesn't, I mean, it wasn't even really like a slam dunk answer. He's like, "Ah, I think it was on Friday." Yeah, like they would tell him on Friday if they knew he was starting. All right, so he's on the field, he says it. Shanahan gets asked, "Now he's back up there, Jordan Mason, after the game at the podium for the press conference, and he's being asked about it again, listen." - That question right there is, is why I'm at it. That's why I don't like really talk to media, 'cause you say one thing wrong, and then you don't. - Yeah. I don't know, just skip that question. (laughing) - Pork. - Pork bad. - I do too. It's not a slot, he didn't do anything wrong. But like, that's the, you know, and I hate it. The stupid secrecy, even when you know, even Stafansky. - No, not Stafansky, who's saying it this week? Who just had their quarterback, who just had a quarterback? - Oh, last deal. - LaFloor, LaFloor. - Oh, oh, you mean afterwards. - Yeah, no, LaFloor was asked about it. He wouldn't rule him out for this week. - Right. - Would you stop playing? - You're not gonna rule him out for this week. He's not playing this week. But because there's this whole thing where you can't, well, I mean, like, we can't let them prepare if they know that it's gonna be Malik Willis, we know it's gonna be Malik Willis, all right? A little bit different with McCaffrey, because they obviously were misleading everybody this whole time. So, whatever. Do we have time for this yet? Let's do this quickly. So, the Browns, DeShawn Watson, Watson looked terrible against the, looked terrible against the Cowboys. Look terrible. Brown Sports Radio 92.3, the fan in Cleveland. The Ken Carmen Show, this is how they opened up the show the day after the game yesterday morning. - David Macedonia, your first step of the fan. Hello. - Good morning. - Boys. - All right. - Two numbers, you'll figure them out. - 42.9, 144. - What is all this? - Watson's quarterback rating? Mayfield's quarterback rating. - Aw, Christ, I can't do this for one more second. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, first call on the box. We're gonna do this. The very first call on the box. We're gonna do this. No, no. I know what his quarterback rating was. I know that he was good. Guys, I'm not doing it right out of the damn box. Can I have a little bit of time before we do this? Can I have a little bit of time? - So I just want to let it be known. So there's a little jump cut in there. The only thing that I cut out of that clip was the typical sports talk radio pleasantries, right? Hey, how's it going first time? More time than that kind of stuff. That's the only thing that I cut out of there. The rest is just like pure reaction. John, this is, that's their morning show. This had to be at like 612 in the morning. - Yeah, well, I think it was 16 minutes in the show. - There is nothing on this planet that would get me mad enough to be that angry about sports at 616 in the morning. - Oh, I disagree. I love it. So I remember and both of us having sports radio backgrounds, we know what it's like reacting to a bad loss, and the Super Bowl, just even everyday stuff or whatever. And before we do that, just wanted to make sure we thank all the diehards out there. Shout out diehards. You guys are the best. Appreciate you watching. But I remember Michael Vick when the Eagle sign Michael Vick and going in the next day, and like that's all we talked about for weeks. And still to this day, there were people that I was friends with at the group of radio stations that were, it was a not on air people that were, because of what Vick did with the dogs, they literally stopped talking to me. Because I like gave the, hey, he spent real time in prison and like obviously it's despicable what he did or whatever, but like, you know, like not to get back into that, but like it was just like, oh, I'm never gonna talk to you again then or whatever. And like that's, and that's what it became on the radio, which was I'll never root for the Eagles again, what you knew was BS. But anyway, from Cleveland standpoint, when the Eagles were rumored to be involved with the Sean Watson, which by the way, they were, you think that how he rose in was a sniffing around about potentially trained for the Sean Watson, you're crazy. But I remember, I think in large part being against it because I didn't want to deal with it, right? Like that, and even like being a father of three girls and reading the lawsuit and everything and not trying to get back in that whole thing, it's a very complicated and delicate subject to where you know he's a great player on the field, but then you have like, you can't, like this is what happened off the field. Oh, well, then I wasn't a, he didn't get charged criminally. It was a civil lawsuit, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So I was so glad when he went to Cleveland because I didn't have to deal with it. I didn't have to do it. And they've had to deal with the Sean Watson thing now for however many years. And he sucks on top of it, meaning really, really been terrible. But Joe Flacco came in and they had the playoff run last year. So I, I, I, and I've been on Ken's show before and he's on the other guy was Anthony Laima. Uh, can't, I just picture is like, you're already so mad that they look the way that they look. You know the Sean Watson sucks. You know that it's not going to work out in Cleveland. And the first caller is giving you Baker May field. That's the thing is like the, the, the Baker Mayfield stats just, just make it like, you know, four times down. He was great. And he was good last year. He had a really good year in Tampa Bay that, you know, really good skill set players around him, right? Chris, Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Rashad White, good running back. But like he was, there were times you watched him last year and you're like, dang, he is poised. He is in control. Baker Mayfield's had a really good last like 16 months or so of football down in Tampa Bay. He's been really good. - Looked like his career as a starter was over at the Carolina. It really did. He is, give him credit, man. It's a, it's a good story. All right. Good one today, everybody.
