[MUSIC] What's up Internet, here to an episode 157 of the Flip Screen Games Podcast. So we leave video game podcasts with two best buds from different nations. Come together to discuss the wide, wide world of video games. I'm your host, Pete and Bestie joined today by the returning champ, Mr. Max Wright. >> Hello, hi. >> Welcome back, buddy, we missed you. >> It's good to be back. I mean, I look like crap and I feel like crap, but I'm back. And that's what it's all about, right? >> Nothing quite like coming back from a holiday and getting sick on the plane. >> [LAUGH] >> We're all knocked out, I've taken down two people in my office since I've been back. I'm really troffing right now. I spent the last year and a half peaking, I'm currently in a trough. >> [LAUGH] >> Join me in my trough, and I'll try not to cough on camera or sneeze or blow my nose or anything like that. We're gonna get through, because video games are happening. We've got video games to talk about. >> Yeah, big week, I'm glad you're able to make it back. >> I've been, I've been missed last week, I really missed last week. And the week, yeah, we have to be a game to talk about things to talk about. We can do it now, let's talk about some games. >> Yeah, let's talk about some games. We had a big, big state of play this week, you know? It was kind of one of those like very, very quick turnaround ones, right? It's like, hey, the state of play is happening tomorrow and they came correct. You know, I think when Sony announces a state of play, I feel like it's always kind of that coin flip of like, what are we getting? Is this one of those ones where they're going to outline everything that's gonna happen in advance and it's kind of very run of the mail and we're just checking in on stuff, or is this gonna be the kind of rarefied air where we get one where there's really some good announcements? And I think this was a really solid presentation. I think regardless of like what you play on PlayStation, there was probably at least one or two big games here that you were excited about. I would think anyway. >> Yeah, absolutely, can I be real with you? I don't think I've ever really come away from a state of play. >> Yeah. >> That was the use of my time. Every time I get to end a state of play, I'm always like, that could have been something I read in the morning, or something that I nodded through, while you told me what was happening on the podcast, right? >> Sure. >> But last night I thought, all right, let's give it a go and I came away pleasantly surprised. I was, even though a lot of stuff had leaked, some of the stuff, some of the biggest stuff we already know about, that's a shame. But I still think that there were a couple of good surprises and the stuff that we did know about got good showing, I was happy with it, so. >> Yeah, I think they struck a good balance of the stuff that was new being exciting or being like a deep dive on something that we had seen before, right? And a lot of the stuff that are games that we've seen two, three times at this point. They had a release date or they had something that felt significant. So I walked away from this. I mean, definitely excited about a few big things, just for my personal taste. But also feeling like this was probably the best general state of play that they've ever delivered just in terms of overall pacing and not having these large swaths of time where I'm looking at my phone or whatever, right, I found myself engaged, and even the stuff that wasn't for me. It didn't overstay its welcome. >> Yeah, and they spread the VR games out across, instead of just having a big VR station, no one cares about. So, wahoo. >> Bing, bing, wahoo. >> Bing, bing, wahoo, yeah. >> So I- >> It's a strong show, because this was such a stacked one, and we haven't really had a presentation like this where it felt like things were this juicy in a while, I think let's just start with the highlights and we can kind of work our way through what we were most excited about as we go here. >> Yeah, absolutely. I want to start things off with Ghost of Yotei, I guess, is probably how you say that? >> I think your property, right? >> Which is obviously Ghost of Tsushima 2, called Ghost of Yotei. It follows a new character, whose name is Atsu, she's voiced by Erika Ishii, who, if you're not familiar with Erika, I'm a fan of their work as a comedian, and some of the stuff they've done with a dropout, and dimension 20 and stuff like that. But if you're somebody who has just been paying attention to big video game trailers the last couple months, they're one of the voices of the four different player character voices in Dragon Age, the Vail Guard. So having a really big fall for her as a voice actor, which is awesome. >> Yeah, it's always good to see people that sort of people love. What it's nice to see the standard video game, you've got your actually where their name is. >> Ashley Birch. >> Ashley Birch, Troy Bakers, all that. It's nice to see people starring video games that people like for other reasons. It's not just like, okay, we're getting another one of these. I think people, seems like a lot of fun. I'm not sure how much of that previous work is going to be relevant to what her character is going to be like in this, because I think we know from the ghost decision was quite more of a, I don't know, not dour, but it was a lower mode. >> Yeah, there's a drama to it, there are characters and moments of levity for sure. But this story overall, it's serious, right? I mean, there's an invading army that's taken over the countryside. And there's all the familial drama with Jin and his uncle and everything. I think that I am very interested in this decision, because I think when there was the kind of the original conversation around like, what does a sequel to ghost look like, there was another invasion by the Mongols on Sushima like a few years later. So the idea that you could have just done another story with Jin, you know, continuing his adventures or whatever, I think was definitely something you easily could have done. >> And I think it's one of those things that sounds like you're doing the same thing again. I'm glad they're doing something different, because I don't know about you, I have spoke to a few of my friends who played the game. I don't remember Jin being a particularly like stronger memorable character that held up the game by himself. I feel like Sushima was the character, the world was the character, the, you know, Jin himself wasn't like strong, he was quite stoic, he was doing his thing, the ghost as a legend was very cool. But I don't remember Jin as a character being the one driving it forward, so I'm not upset about losing Jin, especially if the ghost element, the legend becoming a myth, or even like his myth as the ghost carrying forward into this new game, I'm glad that's the sort of direction that they're going with, because what you don't want to do is end up with, you know, ghost Sushima 2, but it's just ghost Sushima again, you know. >> Yeah, I totally agree. And like, I certainly don't have any negative feelings about Jin as a character, but I definitely feel like to me, he feels that stoicism and that kind of like, you know, very like, I don't want to say flatness of character because I do think he's a character that has an interesting amount of like depth in terms of the way that his personal relationships like feed his character journey, like the whole like struggle he has as the ghost and balancing, you know, his samurai code against doing what's going to actually protect the people and how that, you know, leads to the breakdown of the relationship with his uncle and, you know, the betrayal from, you know, his old, you know, his oldest friend and like all these other like beats that I think he has a very satisfying journey, I think as a character, whether or not he's a character that I'm like, oh, I love Jin, I need more Jin, I agree with you or like, I kind of feel like we got his story and it was great, you know, and it's like, it's a good origin story. And it's as much as you could tell more stories with that character, I'm not sitting here itching for them. I'm with you that I think the mantle of the ghost is more interesting to, you know, explore what that means in different context, in different, you know, political scenarios and things like that. And if you read the PlayStation blog post that they did about this, they talk a lot about basically everything that you were just saying that you wanted and what you thought was most interesting, they seem to agree and which I think is pretty cool. So here's what they had to say. I pulled like two paragraphs that I thought were particularly interesting. While we aren't driving into story specifics yet today, what we can reveal is that Atsu's journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. Our story is set in the land surrounding Mount Yote, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras and unexpected dangers. It's a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima and it's the setting for an original story that we can't wait to tell. And then they talked a little bit too about how the fact that this is the first game that they're building from the ground up for PS5 and the fact that they've chosen this new environment allows them to kind of explore with like some new gameplay stuff and some new mechanics and things that like new weapons and things like that that they tease that are things that make sense in this setting, whether that's because you're on a mountain or because it's 300 years later, I guess remains to be seen. But I do think that that's a yet another opportunity where like because you're removing us from, you know, Tsushima as a setting, but then also the time period, it's like, you can kind of like just get a clean slate and tell this new story with this new character and like, you know, like really explore something that's going to feel fresh and new and like focus in on like the thematic things that work so well about Tsushima rather than needing to feel like you're just kind of like doing that sequel thing of like here it is, but bigger and better. Yes. Yeah. Sort of like the sort of what the habit is of the kingdom, but you know, ghosts can't add a whole building at until I guess because it's not a fantasy game necessary is always fantasy. But it's not, you know, it's not, it's not like it's like, it's like, yeah, it's like not fantasy except for the times when it wants to flirt with it. You know, like it's definitely more, like you said, historical fiction than I would say. Yeah. Well, it's like, when you went to the legends mode, that's just straight up, right. That's your fantasy. And I had to get some people say that like they want Jin to show up in this game as like a ghost or a spirit who talks to the character and like, I don't think that that this is the setting for that. Maybe, you know, if it's like in, in a head kind of thing, you know, but not an actual ghost that she fights or something like that, you know, then you're leading a bit too far into the. Yeah. I think what what for me, what works about the, the legend stuff is that like they're legends, right? So it's like the perception is like there's stories being told and that's why there's fantastical elements, but the real world itself is not fantastical. When something feels fantastical, it's just like human perception, usually. Yeah. But I guess that's sometimes open to interpretation. So your mileage may vary. I guess like you find a Fox and a Fox lead you to an item that is in itself very classic, like fairy tale stuff, but it's also within the realms of like, you just happen to follow the fault. You know, it's believable. You can suspend your, your disbelief. Exactly. Yeah. It doesn't feel like, you know, it's, it's not the same as like literally having a character that is like a spirit, you know, yeah, who then talks to them and is like, Oh, here's all the things that definitely happened in the game. And I can tell you from my experience, because I'm a ghost, I want to quickly tell you something earlier I saw on Facebook, uh, when, you know, it says here that the game is there 300 years later, it's 1603, right, this comment, I saw someone was someone saying 300 years later. So what in 300 years, nothing has changed. They still have exactly what I was supposed to believe that, like, do they think sushi was a, like a fictional place and they think that we're supposed to have like flying cars and I don't understand what they mean by that bro. Yeah. That this is, this is based on history, right? It's like, go read a book. Like there were large, large swaths of human history where, yeah, technology didn't advance as quickly as it used to. The last hundred years have been crazy for us, but there was also like hundreds of years where we, you know, 300 years to go from the bow and arrow to the first guns. I believe that. I have no problem believing that. So like for the record, like the answers is probably no and like it's, this is like such a thing that I've experienced in the Dragon Age fandom with people like watching the first trailer and then making these like extremely heavy reads on like, clearly, this is what this means about the skin. It's like, guys, we saw like three minutes of this game, how are you possibly going to insinuate that it's like, oh, life is exactly the same. How does that make sense? It's like, first of all, I'm sure it's not. Second of all, I don't know, go read, go read a book about Japanese history if you're confused. Right. Wikipedia, man. I'm sure you can get some sort of timeline work, whether I like the look of this. I'm interested in this. I, yeah, like the first one, I hope that they can sort of fix some of the ignoring issues I have with the first game, which is that it felt wider and it did deep where there's a lot to do, but a lot of those things are the same thing 50 times instead of like, you know, and there it doesn't meaningfully evolve. It's sort of that, you know, the similar issue, I have this sort of Spiderman or other sort of big open world games where there's, you know, lots of boxes to tick where it's like, oh, I like, this is very cool. The idea of finding a fox or doing a haiku or, you know, following a natural, you know, the game naturally pushing you something and you discovering something great, but that only works the first five or six, 10 times, let's say, before it's like, okay, I know what's coming now. Like, give me more unique things like that, you know, even if you have to make the game smaller, because I've said, I'm sure I've said this on the show before that when I got to the end of the first act at the end of the first island and entered the second area and was like, it's bigger. Oh, man, like I don't know if I can, I don't know if I can do this. And then by the end, I did like it, but like, I've focused the exact opposite experience where I'm like, yeah, I want to platinum this bitch. I'm gonna write every haiku. I'm gonna climb every mountain, baby. I did. That's why, because like, I did everything I could on the island, like, well, I possibly couldn't know. I was like, okay, cool. Let's go through the, go through the gates into an expert wall and I got to the other side. I was like, oh, I've got this again. I never know. Okay. All right. Right. I did it. I flattened it. But, you know, it was one of those things that. Yeah. You, I get it. You want more variety. It's like rather than 50 foxholes. Let's have like 20 of them. Right. Yeah. And yeah. And like how there's more of those systems that are because it's like the bird and the fox are basically the same thing, right? It's like, do we need, how many of those do we need? Yeah. You know, I get it. Yeah. Well, maybe like have some puzzle elements to it or, you know, just mix up a little bit. You know, you know, like in Zelda, you find the, the, I'm sorry, my brain is not working to stay the corox. You find the corox and yeah, there's like 900 of them. And there are a lot of similar ones, but there's also like, you're just going around and you're like, oh, this looks like it could be something, but I don't know if it is. So you, I don't know, move the apples around. You shoot the apple off the tree. There are more moments where like it feels novel, you know, where it's like, oh, right. Okay. Like cool. This was one of the things I was looking for rather than like, yeah, there's no doubt that I'm going to come here and there will be a fox and I'll chase it. Yeah. Yeah. So just, it's not just following something on the map, it's like, oh, like a genuine moment of like, I wonder if and like, you know, no, that I'm saying this needs to be Zelda. I'm just saying like, if you're going to have a big, like in world and the world's going to push you around in an actual way, let's just like do more with it, you know, yeah. I think that makes sense. I think particularly with how good the game is at funneling you organically. I don't know that there's been a AAA game that I've enjoyed that element of it more like the wind mechanic and everything about how you can kind of like gently like get a clue towards something and it's not always your main objective. It's not, it's like, it can just be like, I don't have anything on the map. What's a point of interest that I can come across? Yeah. I would just love to see them layer in more things like that, more moments that feel unique and like special like that ghost already does such a good job of pointing around, moving you around without needing a map or a compass out of that like it's, it was its key feature for me was being able to get around without just rotating until the icons in the middle of the compass and then walking in that direction, you know, it's why I like to Zelda so much. It's, you know, in a way, sort of what I like about alderman did have compass, it did have like things pointing in the right direction, but ghost did it in such a way where we're like, you know, it's so natural. The wind pushes you and you want to get on your horse and go and do stuff. I think exploring the world feels very naturalistic and I really do appreciate that and I'm excited to see them kind of one of the things they called out was like with the PS5 is that they have like these, they say we're excited to build on the visual foundation by making the world feel more real. We have massive sight lines that let you look far across the environment. And I think like something like that is really exciting. The idea of being like, you're up on this peak and you can just see something super far off in the distance and it's like, great, like organically go to there and see what happens between now and then like that is the stuff I'm excited to see them iterate on. Yes, that was the, that was the sort of breath of the war thing, wasn't it? That's why you, you climb towers, you glide down, you know, you can see things, you can make points. That's very, very clever. Definitely. Yeah. Interesting to see. But yeah, I mean, I loved everything we saw, you know, folks know how much I, I'm a fan of the first game. I'm definitely excited to get my hands on a sequel. I assumed that it would be a couple more years before we saw one. So I'm pretty pleased to see it this quickly. 20, 25 is what we're here in. So fingers crossed. Definitely my most anticipated game after Dragon Age now. Yeah. It was a good, it was a good ending to the, I wasn't expecting it. I wasn't expecting one more thing. I wasn't expecting it to be. No. I was expecting it to be by pro stuff. For some reason what they would announce. I don't know. I don't know what I was expecting. But I wasn't expecting this. I definitely wasn't expecting like a big reveal like this where it's like, oh, we have one more thing and it's actually like a big first party PlayStation game because it feels like those announcements have just been so few and far between, you know. And you know, I think, I don't know, I guess there was this thought in me that like maybe we're just holding these cards closer to our chest until the games are closer until next year until yada, yada, yada, but yeah, I was super pleased to get a peek at this. This is a thing I've been like every one of these events, right? Like, I've kind of had that thought of like, ah, this was okay, but it would have been great if it ended on something like a ghost of Sashima two. So to actually do that, it's like awesome. Great. We love that. So we also got a couple other big like PlayStation, you know, specific headlines that I think are worth just touching on quickly. Horizon Zero Dawn remaster has been, that's a rumor that's been circling around for like months now. We finally got confirmation that that is real and that it's coming on October 31st. If you have the PS four, you're good. Max was adjusting some of the notes to add context, but I had it somewhere else. It's all good. So if you own the game on PS four, or you already purchased it on PC, you'll be able to kind of go through that standard PlayStation upgrade path where you'll pay $10 and then you can get the, you know, the all the new bells and whistles. I think this is the first time they've done that on PC, correct me if I'm wrong. So I'm pretty sure Death Stranding had a definitive edition and you could buy an upgrade for that. Okay. But as far as I know, most of the time, unless one of the Skyrim's you had to buy again, but I'm pretty adamant that most of the time when they do a, like a HD version or something like that, generally you get it for free on PC, like I will every now and again, I'll hop on most of my PC and I'll be like, Oh, I've got, I mean, this is obviously going back years. Oh, I've got all the Bioshock remasters. I remember that. Yeah. Right. I've got like different versions of Skyrim, like, you know, previous games. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know if you're going to get the, can you do this? I think precedents are being set here by Sony, you know, with Death Stranding and with this and also just like, because we're getting more console to console, you know, console generation upgrades and patches that we have done in previous years, sorry, previous generations. I think we might see more of this. I wasn't half expecting it to be free for PC players, mostly because, and I don't want to sound like a master race guy hit, but I feel like the PC version in itself is somewhat of a remaster. You can have unlocked frames. You can have, you know, higher frere, higher resolutions, like better textures, all this sort of stuff. So I, in my head, I was like, Oh, well, you know, if you own the PS4 version, you can upgrade to this new PS5 remaster, or you can go and buy the PSP remastered disc, I didn't realize what they would do on PC is just straight up sell you the PS5 remaster, the new remaster as a different game. But that seems to be what the case is here. So I don't know if I don't know how I feel about it. Like, it makes sense. It does make sense. They have obviously worked on it. It's more than just a standard resolution boost, frame reboost, blah, blah, it is like they've made the game look more like Forbidden West. They've tried to make it visually more impressive. There's a couple other things specifically that are like, definitely the kind of thing that I think it does make sense to when you think about like the work that went into it. Like they, there's, it says 10 hours of rerecorded dialogue with visual enhancements. Like they rerecorded some stuff in the new, you know, like dialogue, I don't even know what to call it. Like I guess the tech system that they have for recording and doing facial, you know, animation and everything with dialogue. So there's some of that stuff that's been, been redone. The frozen wilds DLC will be packed in. So that's also, you know, if you didn't buy that DLC, it's a $10 upgrade and you're getting the DLC for less than I think it costs when it was new. There's going to be support for ultra wide and some of the like performance, dancing, stuff like DL, DLSS on PC. So there, you know, there are some significant upgrades there for sure. But I do think that like, yeah, PC players are probably going to just broadly feel like it's just something they shouldn't have to pay for, you know, yeah, but also like, are they, are they going to, if they don't already own the game, are they going to look at that and go, okay, yeah, I'll wait for that, you know, where are the enhancements going to be worth it when you can right now pick up the game on CD keys for £7.79, I'd rather do that than buy this new expensive one because they're likely going to take it off off of steam, right? And if you did it that way, though, right, then you're getting it for $27 because you could buy the old version, or no, 17, but yeah, buy the old version and then upgrade it. Yeah, I think that's probably the way to go. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, it doesn't seem like much, but I don't see them getting many $60 out of people because PC players are crafty, we like to like to do. You wait for a sale. Right? It's a game that's on sale all the time. Yeah. Yeah. Things that that they're bringing some of the accessibility features from the newer game over, which is cool. That's good. So, you know, because I think Sony's accessibility has, I think, gotten better a lot over the years. You know, I think we saw it really come in 2020 with... Last of us too. Last of us part two. Thank you. And then we've seen it, we sort of got it, well, Ragnarok, we've seen it, you know, all of their games have these huge accessibility features and maybe there are people who've been able to play, who've been in West who couldn't play the original because it wasn't as accessible to them. So great. They can do that. And it's one of those things that's like, it already exists, it's not going to, you know, just do it. You know, it already exists. You've already got the stuff in place. Why not just do it if you do it, and they're not doing it, and that's good. Yeah. And I think this is one of those things where like, this feels like similar to like what people were saying with like the last of us, or it's like, did we really need this? Like, is it... It's like, the game is seven years old at this point. It's like, now that that's like a short amount of time, but the idea that like, you know, to your point, there are probably a lot of people that are interested in it that weren't able to play it when it came out that now with these updates, they will, you know, we had that whole episode with Sightless Combat, you know, a year or two ago now about God War Ragnarok. Two years ago. Yeah. That was something he talked about a lot where there are a lot of games like that where like, you know, there are sequels he's been able to play, and he's never played the original because they don't have the functionality that he needs to be able to enjoy the game. I think that's one area where you really got to give Sony their flowers that like they're accessibility features are, I think, better than pretty much anybody else's in the game. Yeah. At least when it comes to software side of things, I think Xbox kind of probably has them beat when it comes to hardware, like they're the special controllers and everything they've sold are great. Really awesome. Yeah. They've done really good work there. Steve always talks about her rise and, sorry, forcing her rise and that is having really good accessibility. There are the ASL feature that they have, is fucking a strong gang son said, sorry. Yeah. This means I love you. I know like one or two basic ones because my friend's son is, you know, he watches Miss Rachel, which if you are a parent or have friends that are parents, you probably know Miss Rachel. See, he does some, some, no, that one's fuck you in, that's an Italian American thing. Yeah, this is the one. This is the one you touch the chin. I think that's thank you. What's the one from, uh, friends? Oh, uh, oh, this, right? Oh, and then that's another one too. Yeah, I remember that. We're old. Anyway, um, Miss Rachel, I think, reminds me a lot of Mr. Tumble in the UK that we have where he does a lot of his goal, you know, his thing is like, oh, here's one of my special friends and it's like, you know, here is a disabled child and then he'll talk, he'll do a lot of like, yeah, but I'm used to it, I'm not going to embarrass myself, but like you know, he teaches me well to do it and also sort of like, you know, just, and I don't want to say that. I don't want to say the wrong thing. He normalises and humanises people that maybe you might not see in everyday life so that when you do see me in everyday life, you're not afraid to do something like a person because your friend, Mr. Tumble on television has already gotten you that step beyond, you know, totally. There we go. That was a, that was a, my brain's not working. That was a tough one to navigate with that being offensive. It's like, I'm trying to say something nice. I'm trying not trying to say something very nice. Yeah, so the only other thing I think worth calling out is if you were one of the people that got the, got Horizon for free as part of Sony's Play at Home during pandemic lockdown, you will be able to get the $10 upgrade for free, you know, you, you don't have to buy the game. You can use your free copy. The only way that you're going to be in trouble is if you're somebody who has a disc copy and you now have a discless PS5 or you're upgrading and don't have a disc drive, you need to put the disc in every time you use it to play the upgraded version. So something to keep in mind. Yeah, I don't want to get into PS5 Pro and PS Discless. I don't want to, I am, I want to talk to you about it, but we just talked about it last week. We got a lot more. Yeah. For a slow week. Yeah. Yeah, you can, you can rip it to shreds if you'd like, uh, I haven't listened to it. Do you, do you rip it to shreds or do you, do you go? Yeah. No, I don't know. Yeah, we were, we were pretty critical. I think, I think our, our, our, our most charitable, uh, like interpretation of it is like, yeah, I don't, I don't know, man, like the nicest thing I can say about it is the argument that people make where it's like at that price, you might as well just buy a PC, I think comes from people with a certain amount of financial privilege, um, because eight hundred dollars is still half the money you would spend on a PC rig. And I don't care if you're going to save money on software in the long run. Some people cannot justify spending twice as much money on a piece of hardware. That's literally the only like devil's advocate position I'm willing to take is that, uh, maybe this is for someone, but I don't know who that is. Like, you know, it's a very weird middle ground. We're someone who cares that much about the minutia, but isn't willing to spend the money on a PC. Yeah. There's something to be said about like, if you're already able to, you know, you could buy a used PS five for 400, let's say 400 pounds, because that's what CX sells them. They overcharge anyway, uh, if you're willing to spend the 900 to wherever it is to get the PlayStation, the disc drive and the, uh, the stand. Oh, I'm dead. Yeah. Surely like you already, you already in that it's pro. It's not necessary. You're in that bracket already. So like, right? You think you would think. But, but yeah. Anyway, that's, that's for another episode. That's for another day. Because I can feel it. I can feel it inside me. Pete. I can feel it. The excitement coming up. I was away. I was in another country. Like I couldn't see it live. I had to hold it in. But another week, let's move on to the next game. So I want to talk about this game. Yeah. Yeah. So this next one, um, was one of the, the bigger announcements, which, uh, was that Monster Hunter Wild's got its release date. That's coming on February 28th. Uh, I know that you're really excited for this one. You're a big Monster Hunter guy. Um, this was another very like story centric trailer, lots of like context about what's going on and what the kind of main conceit of the narrative is going to be, which I thought is interesting. It definitely seems like a way bigger focus on story than we've seen in, in the past. Yes. And what you've said is seems tailored to the PlayStation audience. Yes. But God damn, we've seen so much story at this point. I feel like it must be very story driven, right? We're getting into the point now where we've seen enough of the main gameplay. We had like, uh, two weeks of like here's every day, here's a new weapon, like, well, the weapons work. We've seen enough of the core gameplay now, but I'm not worried about that anymore. And we've seen enough of the story now where I'm like, all right, maybe there is, uh, uh, maybe there is actually a more of a narrative to it. I do still think that they are focusing on that for this audience and that if it was like, uh, I think at TGS, they're going to do a lot more gameplay stuff and not focus on the story very much. And I think I think it's fine to have both, but it does seem like there's a lot of single player stuff going on. And I think that's good because I do think there are people who avoid monster hunter because it's like, Oh, I don't have people to play with. I don't want to play with strangers. Um, and in previous games, you know, this, this single player stuff has been, you want to get in with other people. You want to do things other people you want to, you know, you want to do stuff. Whereas if this can give you more of a, uh, a story and I think, well, did a good job of that. I think rise didn't do as good a job of that. Um, yeah, I think this, this looks really good. I think the world itself, because it's a big departure, you know, it's not, it's gone from, uh, every room is isolated with loading screens and then in world and rise, it was every, um, area is one large area to now. This is like the world is areas and the area seems to be dynamic and like an area can flood and it goes from being like a jungle to flooded forest or, you know, whatever, like maybe different monsters and water monsters, the new monsters that showed off. Um, one of them's got like four big old flappy things, not wings, but they're like ears or whatever. The new designs are pretty cool. Oh yeah, the new, the new monsters look sick, the, um, not legendary, what's the box that I keep my, I want to keep one to say box legendary, but it's not the box legendary. The flagship monster, uh, looks really cool. Um, it looks like this big sort of like, it's nice that it's not another dragon. There's a, there's a chicken dinosaur. It looks great. Like a dinosaur that's got like, like big, fluffy chicken bits. Love that. It just looks like a lot of fun. I'm really excited to dive back into this. Uh, I was disappointed. It's slightly, there wasn't a demo announcement cause that's what I was really expecting. I was like, cool. Get us in, get us in the demo, but if it's coming out of February, I, you know, we might get it in a couple of months. Um, maybe the announced that it used to be released. Yeah. Maybe, yeah, it could come in, in, in January time, but, um, yeah, I'm really, really hyped for this. I, uh, attempted to boot up either world or, or, or, or rise and save it, I want to save it and I also have far too, but it's tough to play. So yeah, definitely, especially in the next couple of weeks, right? Like this is like all the games that are coming out this year come out in like the next three months. Last, the last like two weeks, well, I've been away, we've had like three games come out and, you know, luckily I've been able to sort of, I was going to play one for a view. I'm currently playing another one for a view that sort of, yeah, I can say space marine to, I'm playing space marine to at the moment, uh, for a review and then we had Astrobot Zelda's out tomorrow, um, it's all cascading, the cascading is happening after sort of sitting around a bit and being like, oh, I'll just play some old stuff. Now I'm like, wish they could have split this up a bit. Yeah, I do wish a couple of the games that were coming out in the next few weeks came out earlier this year. Um, yes, it was nice to have space. Um, I've definitely enjoyed the slower pace of releases the last couple of years. Um, yes, which I mean is obviously not the best thing for the industry, but I think for our ability to like play all the games that you're interested in, it's certainly better and it's been nice to have the ability to go back and play like old games or games that I missed and things like that. Um, but yeah, definitely these next couple of weeks, I feel like there's going to be a lot of big games that get lost in the shuffle, which is unfortunate. Um, but you did just mention before, uh, Astrobot, um, did you get a chance to start that one up yet? I haven't even, I haven't even ordered it yet, but, uh, you got to get it. I have too much to do. I do. I really do. Uh, I won't spoil anything aside from just saying that it's excellent. And I know Steve, uh, was supposed to start it this week as well. I, I really, I really want to do an episode about it, um, in the next couple of weeks. So this, this is going to be my PS5 Swan song, this PS5 anyway, I'm playing, playing this game, finishing it and the PS5 is moving over to my brother. He's going to buy off me for what I think is very good price, but he's, uh, he's going to have that. Yes. You can buy a PS5 Pro, right? Yeah, sure. Exactly. Cool. I think, I, I think I should probably eat it for me and then I'll just sort of like, unless something happens where I have to get another PS5, that for me is like, I'll just wait for now. But yeah, that's, that's like, it's good that it's a celebration of PlayStation because that's it for me. Uh, but now anyway, so speaking of Astrobot, uh, there's some DLC that's coming out in the fall of 2020. Well, okay now it says fall 2024, but I also see a thing that says 2025. So now I'm not sure which one it is, but I think it's 2024. I'm imagining, I think it's in the, in the, yeah, and this is a typo. Yeah. Yeah, that would be crazy. Um, but anyway, we're getting, uh, five online speedrun levels and then a set of 10 new bots to rescue. Um, if you played Astrobot's playroom, you'll remember that the, the speedrun, uh, scene there was, was pretty popular and was definitely a thing that a lot of people. Right. Yeah. So it was really cool. I'm glad to see that get added and, um, anything they can do to bring more content to that game is, is a plus in my book cause it's just such a good time. I'm really enjoying it. I've been like savoring it. I was, uh, talking about it with Ken last night and, um, I've been doing a thing where I'm only playing like one or two new levels a night now. And then when I'm done with that, I just go back and like get collectibles from that I've missed from other levels cause I want it to last a little bit longer, but I probably only have a couple of maybe another night or so with it before I'm done, unfortunately, but, uh, I'm having a great time with it. I've got it. I've got a beautiful, because they, um, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're right. Exactly. And, uh, yeah. That's the beauty of a game that's this length, right? It's like that 20 hours where you're like, wow, it was perfect the entire time. Right. Didn't. Yes. Didn't, uh, didn't waste a minute. Uh, all right. So let's jump into some of the other stuff that got announced. There was a good number of other things that we'll spend a little bit less time on. Um, yeah, let's miss through these cause, cause I've just noticed you've been talking for 40 minutes about the headlines. The big stuff. Yeah. But that's the big stuff. Fine. That's where we wanted to focus our energy. So, uh, there's a set of new PlayStation five controllers and console covers that are like, uh, called the chroma collection. There's like a blue one. There's like a teal emerald kind of one. And then there's a, uh, a white one that's called Pearl and they're like, like luminescent or like shiny, um, to the, to the light. They look really cool. They're coming out, knock to, or three orders will come out in October. So if you're looking for a new PlayStation controller or cover, um, definitely pretty, pretty sweet. Uh, we got the reveal and released, uh, window for, um, an expansion for Alan, way two called the lake house. That's coming out in October, 2024, um, big, I'm excited for this is one of the ones where I'm like, or any tight room for this. So yeah, no, you love the, the, the game when it came out last year. So that, that was a really cool one. Uh, great, great get for this kind of event, right? It's a big, continues the control crossover, which is very exciting as well. Yeah. And even as somebody that like hasn't played both of them, I actually picked that up, which I thought was cool. Just as somebody like on the periphery where she, uh, I guess it's the, the protagonist from control talking or I thought so where she's like talking about, Oh, like they set up this base in the town. I was like, Oh, that's the base from control. Okay. That's cool. Yeah. Yeah. If it's, uh, if it's her or if it's the protagonist development to his name, I cannot remember for the life of me. The police officer though, right? Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, I can't work out if it's, uh, who it is either way, we'll find out. We'll find out. Very cool. Very cool. Yeah. Um, and yeah, I think I think that to me was like just like a, a theme of this state of play of even the stuff that's like multi-plat. It was just like, they were just good announcements, right? Like it's like that's a really cool reveal. And again, it was short, right? It was like, if you're an Alan Wake person, you got a lot out of it. And if you weren't, you're like, ah, cool. One of the games of the year, getting some DLC. Great. Right. Yeah. There's origins, uh, is coming in January 2025. This was a pretty big, uh, trailer. It's coming out in January 17th, um, showed off a lot of the tech and you know, it's, it's more dynasty warriors. If you're a dynasty warriors person, it's bigger. It's better. Um, cool enough. Uh, so then next up, we're jumping around a little bit here. We're going to touch on, on pretty much everything though, um, fear the spotlight got a new trailer. It's one of those Blumhouse, uh, horror games that, that got like a small teaser, uh, over the summer. And this is that one that's got that PS one inspired like voxel style, like low light, kind of grainy, like, I think it looks really cool. Um, I'm not a big horror game guy, but like this aesthetic really spoke to me. And I thought, um, it did a really good job of like setting, setting the stage in a way that, that enticed me. October 22nd. Yeah. Yes. Oh, okay. It's true. Uh, towers of egg, hos, ag sub, hag, hospa, I forget how they said it. Egg, hospa. Uh, hag, hospa, hag, hospa will say that's fine. Uh, yeah, why not? So this is a like forming, sim kind of experience where it's like, you're on this island and there's like monsters that you can connect with and there's biomes and you're building up a town and it's just a lot of those kinds of, those things that you expect in this kind of game. Uh, but it's in like a third person, like more like 3D style, a little bit more swung out camera. Yeah. The thing like new description there, I was like, this sounds truly awful, but now I'm okay with talking about the thing. The thing I thought was interesting about this was that it's coming to early access, uh, which is something you don't really see on PlayStation very often. No, no. So it's not something you often see on console, I'm pretty sure it's like power world. Uh, or you know, I think a lot of people like grounding stuff for that on it. Yeah. Like Xbox has done it, right? But like, again, certainly not like you see on, on PC, but yeah, I thought that was, I just thought that was interesting, you know, not necessarily a game that I'm like super jazzed about, but, um, interesting to see them kind of flirting with that a little bit. Uh, we got a release date for Lego horizon adventures coming November 14th, pre-orders will start on October 3rd, you know, just more showing off what the game is and that there's this kind of like core, um, I guess mechanic of like building out a base at the like, uh, mother's, um, embrace, I think is what it's called, which is like where Ayla is originally from. Kind of a weird thing to have you do in that game, considering the whole thing is about her leaving and never coming back, but, um, whatever. That's cool. Um, that game will be fun, I'm sure. Because the Lego games are, uh, so then this is an interesting one, uh, there's a DLC coming for Sonic X shadows, generations and Keanu Reeves is gonna voice shadow, uh, in it and we'll have like a voice pack, yes, like movies, like dialogue from the movie, recontextualize. Yeah, well, so I think it's like, I don't know if it's, I don't know if it's, I think what it is, is it's like DLC where the, the bits of the DLC are like from the movie related to the movie. And then they've got Keanu Reeves, because I don't know if, I don't know if the voice where he's like, Oh, I'm in a new place where I've like that. I don't know. I don't know. It seems like, um, it seems like they're doing like just movie tie in DLC stuff that's separate from the main game. That's what, that's what I mean. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, I couldn't tell if it was new. Yeah. I don't know. I guess whatever. It's interesting. It's a cute interaction. I guess, right? Everybody loves Keanu Reeves. So it makes sense that they wanted to cash in on that fair enough. Uh, okay, Fantasia Neo dimension is coming on December 5th, uh, December 5th, excuse me. This is that game. We saw this at a previous event over the summer and this is that game that's from the, uh, some of the final fantasy creators and it's got that mechanic where you're like, you can like skip a battle and like basically like pocket it and then you can like do all the battles at once and fight these like big groups of enemies and you like, there's this mechanic where you like curve attacks and like the trajectory of an attack will like hit a larger group of enemies if you pocket a bunch of battles and it seems really interesting. It's a, it's a fun conceit for, um, a central mechanic for a turn based game. Um, you know, the music sounded really good, unsurprisingly, it's, you know, um, I'm forgetting his name right now, but one of the, one of the longtime final fantasy composers. Um, yeah. I mean, this is what I'm interested in for sure, right? This is up my alley. I'm sure this will be one worth checking out. Uh, so then I'm going to group the PSVR two stuff together so we can get past it. Uh, Metro awakening VR is coming out on November 7th. It's a VR game set in the Metro universe. That's pretty much it. And then hitman three VR reloaded is coming in December and this is, you know, it's a bunch of the content from hitman three, uh, in VR, um, cool idea. I could see that being fun. It seems like Steve's thing. Yeah. It's just, it's just in VR so it's not. Yeah. Uh, I don't, I mean, I don't know. I guess he does still have his, uh, if he's on Oculus two or whatever, no, that's not what it's called anymore. Right? What do they call it now? Is it? Uh, well, no, no, no, no, meta, meta, that's the quest, the quest I'm calling the Oculus to is the quest to, sorry, yeah, the quest to show, yeah, whatever. So we'll see. Maybe, maybe he'll be able to check it out then, but, uh, I did think it was, you know, I, I had a moment where I was like, wow, three whole games that play in PSVR. Like, look at that. You know, two guys, nothing first party though. Yeah. Big shock. Uh, so then legacy of cane soul reaver one and two remastered is coming in December. I thought this was great. You literally were just talking a couple episodes ago about wanting to replay these, right? Yeah. Yeah. So I did replay them. Um, two years ago, when I first got the steam deck, I repaid them both and I played like the four, you know, core ones leading up to the, to the fifth one and then never played the fifth one, which is the entire reason I played the first forward or played anyway. This is cool. I, uh, was hoping they'd fix the controls. It does seem that they said they will be fixing the controls because it is a bit janky. I don't know. I think a lot of people are going to play this and be a bit disappointed by the, the block puzzles and stuff. There's this content stuff that they've sort of caused, if I had to cut to get the game out originally. Um, but I do want to play this again. I do. I do want to buy these games and play them again. Um, I've never, I've never played them. I'm excited to give them a shot. They're very cool. They're very cool. A big, like, um, I would sit around in my bedroom with hybrid theory on the, uh, TV player. What a, what an old fashioned sentence. I love it. Yeah. I'll tell you with the, uh, with the video player, it was on the bottom already. This was like, ooh, what a time, what a time to be alive. I'm over what for the FC bedsheets. That was great. That was. That was it. So this is December 10th. Yeah. I mean, I'm into this 25th anniversary going to be coming out in Xbox as well. Pretty cool. Sorry. You said that. You just like Donald Trump. You said 25th anniversary. Pretty good. You said that. You played on Xbox. It's going to be, it's kind of rich as well, I think actually. It's going to be great. All right. Yeah. You need to listen back to that at some point on time. It's 25th anniversary. It's going to be huge. All right. There's a some DLC for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Shredders Revenge, uh, there's, uh, the radical reptiles DC DLC, which adds to more characters. And then there's a, um, a few, uh, like fully remixed version of the soundtrack with like a bunch of really notable, um, like, chip tune composers and stuff. Just very cool. Cool. Cool. Yeah. Yeah. That's exactly what, uh, people wanted from a TNT game. Yeah. It's really good. It's a fun game. Yeah. Give me television time. But again, and but better and they've smashed it. Yeah. And the power range of one also looks wicked. I'm very keen on that as well. Yeah. Yeah. It's, it's a really, really good release on that one. I was very pleased with, uh, with, with that entry, uh, then we got another remaster collection. Lunar remastered is coming in 2025. Um, I'm not familiar with these games. They're apparently like, like, you know, they poised them as these like great PS1 classic RPGs, but I'm not familiar. Never heard of it. And it wasn't until I saw Zion and John talking about it excitedly how I was like, oh, this isn't, this wasn't like a made up game. Like this was real. Um, but probably just a little young for it, honestly, you know, maybe, yeah, yeah, also just, uh, you know, PS one pixel pixel, pixel art games on PS one, I think were notoriously more niche than because 3D was the big thing, right? Yeah. 3D 3D. So yeah, I can see them being more, more niche releases. Um, I did, I did get confused when it said updated graphics. And I was like, this just looks like how it probably would look before. So I don't know what they mean, but, um, they did say that it has, um, like, widescreen support and stuff. But yeah, the other than that, it did look pretty similar to me, but hey, pretty cool. Yeah. Looks cool. Uh, then we got arc age chronicles, um, which is a, I think it's a souls like it looks like a soul's like, um, I thought this looked really cool. Uh, it was a pretty good story trailer. The combat looks fun. Um, it had like, uh, you know, very kind of like standard, I would say, swords and sorcery kind of aesthetic and, and set up, but, uh, that's a flavor that works for me when it's good. Why can't I remember this? Oh, yeah. I remember this. Yeah. This does look the combat looks pretty tight. It does look pretty tight. Yeah. It does. Like the visuals, no, I liked the look of the, just a big day with this big, uh, was it actually had a hammer? One of the two. Yeah. Um, the other conical. Right. Yeah. It was one of those ones where like when you have big characters and they're like swinging big weapons, like I feel like sometimes they can feel really like weightless. And I felt very like visceral in that way. Yeah. Like, like in monster, sometimes where you can have like your, your dudes got the biggest sword in the world. Whereas in like Elton ring, you're like, yeah, there's a war wedding. He's really throwing. There's like a sponginess to it in monster hunter that like in something like Elton ring. It's like, no, if you want this big sword, like you're going to swing it like a boat, you know, like it's like, you're going to roll around like a big, fat, heavy monster. Yeah. Like you're going to feel that momentum a little bit more. Yeah. Which I thought looked pretty good. Um, we'll see, you know, it seems interesting. I thought I thought it showed well. Uh, so then this was funny, a power world is out on PS five, uh, today, and we actually just did an entire episode of run Nintendo noise this week, all about, uh, Nintendo and the Pokemon company bringing a lawsuit against power world. So it's pretty funny to have like everyone talking about the lawsuit. And then it's like, we're out on PlayStation. It's like, okay. Yeah. You think they would, um, do you think they would maybe like go, well, let's take this out and just announce it more quietly, like if you're in the middle of a lawsuit or the beginning of a lawsuit, then it's be like, Hey, hey, by our game, just give me a bit. Yeah. It just, and like it's, you know, it's one of those, I'm sure this was put in this weeks before the lawsuit was, you know, so whatever, but, um, it just, I, it, right, it's funny to me. Yeah. So I agree with you. Uh, so then we got a look at hell is us, which is, that's another horror game that has kind of like a solzy, maybe like, I would say I couldn't tell if it was more a soul's like or if it was more like a devil may cry, kind of like action slash hack and slash games. No, it was easy to me because it felt like way to, I'll be honest. This is the trailer of the show for me, um, really, this really did it for me. This like the sort of like the mix of technology, but also a little bit of horror and a little bit of yeah, like the guys have the big holes in their faces, but he's got like a sore, but he's also got the drone and you can use the drones to attacks. It looks a little bit like they've got some of the surge, but also like, you know, um, post book. I don't know. It's just got a lot of different elements. They're very interesting. You know, this kind of remind me of, and like this is a bit of a read, but I, I'm interested if this plays for you at all. It kind of was reminding me a little bit aesthetically of something like samurai jack where it's like, it feels like there's these moments of like futuristic technology, but like it's like post that, like that society has fallen. So now people are using swords and it's like, it's like, it's, you know, it's like post apocalypse, but in kind of like a technically advanced world. But then there's also the super natural element as well, of course. Yeah, I guess it's called like horizon and we're like, sure. Yeah. But like, but it seems like as your character remembers society falling, right? Like you're like the little girl giving the voice over as I'm imagining our central character now as an adult, right? And this is her. She's saying like, you know, these like bad people came and they took my dad away and then I couldn't go outside and the, you know, the whole country was sick and blah, you know, it's interesting. Like it's, it has like a little bit of zombie apocalypse, a little bit of, you know, fall out horizon, bones of an old society. Very interesting. There's a bit of death stranding in there. It's just got. Yeah. It seems like a really interesting. And it's like, are they aliens? Are they demons? Cause she said that monsters, they don't live under the bed. They live inside us. It's like, yeah, I don't know. It's. And it's like that piece of them. So are they always here? There's a lot of questions. And I thought they were interesting, you know, like I found myself being like, yeah, cool. Like this seems like a world that I would be interested in unraveling. Yeah. It's got sort of like a remedy field to it, like control, it's like a little bit of death stranding. It just looks a little bit like lives of P as well with like the different types of weapons. Maybe I've, I've just really into this. And I did, is this something was announced yesterday or did it already exist? Cause the first I ever heard of it, but it's it. So in the article that I'm referencing, it says the new trailer for it. So I'm imagining that it had been revealed in the past, but I don't remember seeing it either. No. I mean, either. And I feel like I'm glad that I watched the thing because I would have just skipped by this, not no existed, but yeah, this is wicked, really, making it nack on a rogue factor. What have they made? More time. Okay. That's not, that's, that's pretty good game people like more time. Very cool. Interesting. I think it showed really well. At the very least. Yeah. The last, the last new thing we're going to talk about here is the midnight walk, which is from the team that worked on lost in random. It's got a claymation kind of look to it. Very like, you know, uh, Coraline, Tim Burton, yeah, hot, top icky kind of flavor affectionately. Yeah. Yeah, I actually did think it was little nightmares at first. And then it was like, oh, no, this is something. This is one that you can play in VR, but it's also on PS5, which is good because that means people might actually play it. Yes. Good style. I was, I thought I had a good, good vision. Good look to it. I did find myself tuning out when I thought it was a VR game and then they're like, oh, you can play it on PS5. And I was like, ah, okay. Good. Yeah. That was something I thought was interesting about the, um, I forget the name of it now. Was it Fantasia Neo Dimension? They said that like all the backgrounds were like actually handmade dioramas, which is fucking awesome. I didn't realize that until I saw it on Twitter and we've got a friend who's like big into making models and stuff for D and D and I was showing him and I was showing him it in action. He was like, that's really clever that like, yeah, you're, you're, you make the model then the characters, they'll be little sprites run through it. Like a very old school too, right? Cause like you think about like the final fantasy games on the PS one and they had like a very. Seven is what sticks out. Yeah. And these very like hand painted backgrounds and you know, it's like you kind of feel like you're going through pieces of art, which is, it's cool. It's a, it's a very, uh, creative way to do that reminds me a bit of in cartoons, like old cartoons, Scooby-Doo or whatever, where they like recycled background. Well, no, no, just say that, but like you could tell when an element of the background was going to move or be used or something, but it would have a slightly different art style, you know, um, yeah, definitely. So then the last thing I wanted to just touch on real briefly was there was also a deep dive on, um, Dragon Age's combat and they showed off a boss fight, um, you know, at some point in the game, um, where they were like fighting dragons and stuff and I, I just was really pleased to see it. There's been a lot of kind of like, you know, um, debate on what the combat looks like and is it simplified? Is it not? Is it this? Is that that? And to me, it looked a lot, a lot, a lot like the moment to moment gameplay of Mass Effect, which, you know, I think was always good. And I think it's probably the right direction for the franchise in terms of, you know, just trying to make it something that is not, um, too obtuse. If you're somebody that doesn't, you know, have a background in CRPGs and I think like, you know, if you're somebody that played on console, they never played like CRPGs, right? Like, so this to me feels like probably a good compromise between the very console centric approach of Dragon Age two and the more PC driven approach of, um, of origins. So yeah, I thought this looked really good. I'm excited. Obviously this is a game I'm, I'm super excited for. It's a month away now and, uh, it's going to be all I can talk about at the end of the year. So, um, I will leave it at that. I was quite impressed by how this showed. Uh, I liked the look of the, um, oh, look at the combat, I like the look of it bringing up the venue sort of thing. It looks cool. It looks interesting. Yeah. I can't wait to get my hands on it. So that's it for the state of play. I think, you know, we said it at the top. I think this is a really good presentation. I think this is one of, if not the strongest state of plays, um, at least the general interest ones that they've, they've had to offer and I walked away from this with a lot to look forward to. I'm very pleased. Yeah, I was, I was, I was pleasantly surprised and I usually go into these things like I said at the start, expecting to enjoy it. I just happened to be awake and I was also hoping a little bit of a bloodborne as I always do. Um, sure. But yeah, I think, um, this, this showed really well and I love, there's a few games here that I'm genuinely very excited for. So I think to me this is probably the bar by which I'll judge future state of plays. And, you know, like, yeah, this one felt right. This is, this is the cadence I want out of these things to make them feel like an event that's worth tuning into. Yeah. So it had the quality of like an intent, like a good Nintendo direct where it's like, here's some third party stuff, here's like some updates on first party stuff and then bang, here's a big way to end off. Here's a game you want, you know, you're very cool. Yeah. Really good. Good showing. Good showing from PlayStation after a, you know, couple, couple unforced errors recently. It's nice to see them get something right.
