So I'm gonna talk about Maryland versus Indiana, and can the Terps defense really stop the Indiana offense? And right now, I can't say yes to that question. I would like to sit up here and tell you guys that Maryland's defense is going to have a day against the Indiana offense. But after what I've seen so far this year, I don't have a ton of confidence that Maryland's defense is going to be able to stop Indiana's offense. Indiana's offense has been really good this year. If you guys haven't watched them, if you guys haven't been able to check them out, I've watched a little bit, just kind of preparing for some of these videos overall, but they've got a really good offense with a bunch of really good players, and at the most important position, they got a kid who's playing at a really high level. And then we got a Maryland defense who has been up and down this year. I think that's totally fair, and I think the expectations going into this year was that the Maryland defense was going to be a really good unit in the Big Ten. I'm not gonna say an elite unit in the Big Ten, but a really solid good unit in the Big Ten. We thought this might've been one of our better defenses that we've had under Coach Loxley, and we've seen flashes of it this year, but we've also seen it look pretty bad at times this year. Two times in particular, I think, of it looking really bad. Of course, the Michigan State, that's when it looked horrible, that's when it looked the worst, and we made a guy in Aidan Childs, who's been very, the definition of probably up and down. We made him look really good, going for 363 yards against us, and then Virginia in the first half also looked really good. We allowed a Michigan State receiver, Nick Marsh, go for eight receptions in 194 yards and a touchdown. Something that we just can't do, something that we just can't allow, something that just can't happen overall for Maryland football. We gotta be able to clean that up on defense, and there's been a bunch of different problems, but Indiana's a different monster. I'm looking at some of these guys, I'm looking at some of their players, I'm looking at the scores that they put up so far. Indiana's offense is better than Michigan State's offense, and I don't really think it's close. They've got a quarterback right now that is playing at a really consistent level in Curtis Rourke, who's arguably been the best quarterback in the Big Ten when you look at the numbers. He's third in the conference in yards with 1013. Billy Edwards is one, but Billy Edwards does have quite a bit more attempts than him. Billy Edwards has almost 40 more attempts than Curtis Rourke, so it makes sense that Curtis Rourke is behind him in yards, but the fact that he's 40 more attempts is only behind him by 100 yards. It tells you a lot of what you need to know. Curtis Rourke is not just checking it down. He's throwing it deep. His average yards per throw, or average yards per completion, I could say, is 10.8, so he's definitely chucking it around. He's second in the Big Ten in touchdowns, only to Luke Altimaier with eight. And the thing about it, that is really scary about Curtis Rourke, and that I think is a big part of the game that I'm concerned about, is he hasn't turned over the ball this year, zero interceptions so far this year. And so I look at this Indiana offense, and I look at Curtis Rourke, and I say, "This kid's balling. "He's balling. "He's much better than eating trials. "He's better than the Collindrea kid at Virginia. "This kid's playing at a really high level right now, "and that scares me in terms of his numbers, "in terms of the amount of yards he's throwing for. "His completion percentage is right up there "in the Big Ten as well, at number three." So he's top three, it feels like in every single set, like you can really argue that he's been the best quarterback in the Big Ten. It's also like, his offensive line is clearly played at a pretty good level, because he's also bottom in the conference in terms of sacks. When you look at it, he's only taken to sack, versus bottom of the conference. And when you look at him compared to all the other starters, most of the starters have taken a lot more than that. For some reference, Billy Edwards is also at the bottom, who's only taken three, but UCLA's quarterback number one in this taken eight sacks. So their offensive line has also played pretty well. So I don't feel awesome about our defense stopping this Indiana team, because of what I've seen this Indiana team do, but there is another part of this. Indiana hasn't played a team like us. They've played Charlotte, sure they played Western Illinois, put up 70-70 against us. They put up 31 against FIU, which isn't even that crazy or impressive or anything like that. They put up 42 against UCLA, but UCLA's had really bad this year. They haven't played a defense like us. And I do think Indiana's gonna be able to score. I do think Maryland's defense isn't just gonna get, just get absolute gash and crush and get a big play after big play. I don't think it's gonna be quite like that, but I do see this being a higher scoring game, but I think we're gonna show Indiana a couple of things they haven't seen, and they haven't seen the personnel that we have on our team. I think there's some places that I think, the reason why I think that Indiana's gonna score a good amount is 'cause I think there's weaknesses on the Maryland defense that still are very much there, specifically the cornerback room. I'm gonna talk about it a lot until it gets fixed, until it gets better, and it might not get fixed this entire year. I don't feel good about Maryland stopping the Indiana Hoosiers passing offense. I don't. And I look at it, I say, they've got some guys at the receiver position that are playing at a really good level right now, at a really high level. I'm Elijah Sharat, I'm as a kid that leads her team in receiving with 250 yards. They have another kid in Omar Cooper Jr, who's also got 245 yards. And those two guys, I feel like, could go off on the Maryland DBs. I think that's fair to say. After what I saw, Aidan Childs do at Michigan State. Why, what other evidence do I have to say that, no, they're not going to score, no, they're not gonna be able to throw the football like, that's just not realistic for me to say. I do think that our defensive line is gonna create some more pressure than they've seen all year. They're offensive line has played well, but let's remember they haven't played really anybody. UCLA is probably the best team they've played and UCLA is not good this year. So I think it goes kind of both ways, but I do think they're still going to be able to throw the ball kind of, probably at a really high level against the Maryland team. I think Billy Edwards is gonna have to have a good game to keep up and for us to win this game. They also have the seventh leading rusher in the Big 10, who's playing at an outstanding level, and Justin Ellison, when I look at it, when I look at the average yards per carry, he's averaging a pretty high level at these, he's averaging 7.6 yards per carry right now, Justin Ellison has 290 yards. So when I look at 7.6 yards per carry, that means he's rushing at a really effective level. He also has four touchdowns. And so I say they are balanced, they're balanced right now. And I don't feel awesome about us stopping them. I just don't. And I think that Maryland's defense will try different things. We're not gonna do the same things that we've done the path, we're not gonna do the same thing we did against Michigan State. I doubt we play some of the young corners that we did in the Michigan State game. I ended up not working well. Like Kevin Humes kind of got tortured in that game. I doubt we see a lot of Humes and Brayden Lee. I'm guessing we kind of stick with our older guys. We stick with the experienced guys. I don't see us just playing a bunch of guys, but I don't think we're gonna be able to just completely stop them. I think we're gonna have to score a little bit. And when you look at the over-under, the over-under, it's listed at 53 and a half. So Vegas does think there's going to be a good amount of points scored for sure. Nothing crazy. The line's not like 60, but they do think some points are gonna go off on the board. So I think that's the interesting thing today for sure. Or on Saturdays, how well can our defense stop them? And that might be the... But I do think that we will mix some things up. It's not just gonna be them completely thrown over our heads, but I do think we could see some big plays from the Indiana offense. And I can't say, based on evidence that I've seen this year, that that's not the case. So that's kind of how I see us. And I don't think we're gonna be able to stop them, but I do think we'll be able to slow them down a little bit. That's kind of how I see things. What are the key matchups in this game for the Terps vs. Indiana? I will talk about that after this ad from FanDuel. Go to Carvana.com to sell your car the convenient way. So some key match ups for this game. I think there's a lot of key match ups for this game. I think that I could talk pretty much this whole episode about match ups and what I'm looking for. One that I just talked about, that I just want to hit real quick because I felt like we just talked about it a little bit. Maryland's corners versus Indiana receivers. Indiana's got some players at the receiver position. Like I said, they got a couple of guys, I think are really high level players. They have the Elijah Sarat, Ammar Cooper, who has been good. They have also have Miles Price, who's also been up there for them. Miles Cross too. So they have a pretty deep receiving court. It seems like their quarterback is going to throw a Carter Schwartz. They're going to throw it a lot of different guys. And I say, does the Maryland defense, does the Maryland secondary? I think that's the first key matchup. Maryland secondary. And those guys, can we legitimately guard them? I don't know if we're just going to play man to man. I feel like we played a lot of man to man this year. I wouldn't mind playing some more zone. I think that that can really, but if we do play some man to man, can we keep everything in front of us at least? If we start giving up big plays, if we start giving up plays on the field, and that Indiana crowd, which I'm guessing is going to be really big on Saturday at 12, if they start getting into it with some big plays down the field and those different things, then that's when we're going to be in trouble. Indiana's been able to do that all year. Don't let them do that. They've been able to just throw the ball over the place, throw the ball over these lesser opponents. They've been able to do that. See how they react when they actually have to come up with a long drive, a 15 play drive, where they have to get a bunch of first downs and third downs and versions and those different things. For some to be really methodical, I think that's something that we're going to be, I'm going to be looking at, is how methodical can we make the Indiana Hoosiers? Can we force them to some third downs? Can we get some pressure? And I think that leads me to my next key match-up, Maryland's Defense the Line, those guys in the middle, on the outside versus the Indiana offensive line that's been good this year. It's been really good. They've only allowed two sacks. Like I've said, they've both run blocking and pass blocking. They've created some lanes for the runners, obviously, because those guys are averaging a pretty high yards per rush, which is definitely a big credit. Always goes to your offensive line when you see something like that. And so I'm saying, can we beat their offensive line? Can we create pressure? And if we can't, I don't think we win this game. 'Cause I don't think our secondary already is probably not good enough. It's not going to be the other way around. We were in the past that felt like Diyate Banks and Tarheep Still and Jacob Bennett, it felt like we could get some coverage sacks because those guys were so good playmakers in the back end. But this year feels like the more traditional way to do it is. You got to help your secondary eye. You got to get some pressure right away. And the Indiana offensive line's been good. So can the guys in the inside, Jordan Phillips and Tommy A. King bassote or can the guys on some of the D. Edge's Quayshaun Fuller, Kellen Wyatt, whoever else, Don O'Brien, if he's rushing the password, whoever else who maybe can those guys get some pressure? And if the answer is yes, I feel a lot better about us winning this game. The answer is no. And we have to trust the guys in the back end. I don't think we win this game. I just don't. I think they're going to be able to pick us apart. I think Curtis Rourke's to be able to score against us. And so the Maryland defensive or offensive, yeah, the defensive line versus the Indiana offensive line, I think is one of the, maybe the biggest matchup of the day, because I don't think no matter what, I don't think Maryland corners are going to be able to hold up forever or that long. So I think if you want to win this game, you're going to have to get pressure. But also looking at it as the other way, Maryland linebackers against this running back, as well as the Indiana offensive line. And like I said, the Maryland defensive line in terms of the running game. If Indian is able to be balanced in this game, that's when we're in trouble. They've been balanced all year. Like I said, this could Justin Ellison's averaging 7.6 yards per carry and has four touchdowns. If we allow that kid to just do anything he wants and get going, running the ball, and then they can start to play action stuff. And they can start being an offense that can rely on both the run, the pass. We're caught, we're caught. And so I think Maryland's defensive line. I think you have to be able to limit the run game. I'm not saying that they're not able to have a few runs, but I think you've got to force them under five yards per carry in the linebacker room as well. I think you've got to fill the hole. You can't give up big plays for the scene I'm telling you. That crowd is going to feast on big plays. So I think that's something definitely to look out for because their run game, their Russia has been really good this year. And she's rested. He hasn't taken like a billion carries or he would have more yards. And he's got 38 carries on the year. And that's not close to being top of the Big Ten, but he's averaging almost the most per yards per carry out of anybody besides like the kid at Iowa. And one of the kids at Michigan has a really high yards per carry. So I think that's something that you look out for sure. Ten, the Terps stop the run game. And then I also look at it the other way around. What is Indiana? I think this one of the biggest matches as well. What is Indiana's game plan against high felon? Or are they going to kind of use that thing where we're going to force everybody else to beat us? But that kid fell in who's one of the best receivers in the country so far. We're not letting him be us. We're just not. Or is it the other way around where maybe they take a different approach and say we're going to stop everybody else. Maybe we double pray through a little bit. We get Dylan Wade out the game a little bit. We make sure Octavian Smith doesn't beat us over the top. And we're going to say Marilyn, keep throwing it to tie felon over and over again. I doubt that's kind of strategy. I see it more as the first one where they might double him because I don't think a lot of guys have stepped up and I've said that's going to be a key. Ken guys, step up. So I think that's another interesting matchup. What does Indiana do with tie felon? And can they stop him? What does their secondary look like? 'Cause I don't think we've had a fair representation of what their secondary actually looks like 'cause they haven't played anybody at all. So I think that how they guard tie felon is something that is definitely a key matchup that I'm going to be looking for. That's going to be the rest of the season type of thing. Can tie felon get another 100 yard game? I don't know. So we'll see if I had to predict, I'd probably say is 100 yard streak, probably comes to an end. I don't think Indiana's gonna let him just rush all over them. I just don't see that happening overall. I see them saying everyone else is going to have to beat us. Billie Edwards in this game is going to have to rush the football. We've been holding him back, but it's time for him. We're time for us to let him go and run the football. So Billy Edwards, I honestly think my one concern about Billy Edwards is I don't really believe in this type of stuff, but it does feel like he's due for like a, not a bad game, but he's due to not play as well as he's played. I think we've got to look at this Indiana team as the best team we've played so far this year. And Billy Edwards has played well, but he hasn't played well against an elite type of team. And that's not, I wouldn't say Indiana's elite, but he hasn't played really well against a team, the caliber of Indiana yet, 'cause he just hasn't gotten the chance. So I think there is a chance that he could be in for some regression as a passer, as a player, his stat line. I don't think that's ridiculous for me to say. I think that's definitely something that is a possibility with Billy Edwards. He's played really well. You don't play at this type of level for 12 games. Like he's fourth, I think it was fourth or it was top five, I looked at it in the PFF ratings for quarterbacks and the power four. Like he's playing at like a really high level, not just like, oh, he's playing pretty good ball. Like he's playing at about as high of a level as you can play on Billy Edwards. So I'm looking at it and I'm saying, okay, I really like what Billy Edwards is doing. He's doing some really special things, but he could be due for some regression in this game against Indiana, which we do not need. But I do think there's a way for us to make sure that he stays playing on top of this game to give Indiana a little bit of a curveball. Something that they're not fair for. I'm not gonna act like Indiana doesn't know about this, but something that they might not be as ready just because he hasn't done it as much. I'm just running the football. He hasn't ran the football a ton this year. And I think Coach Loxie's been waiting for the matchup where he turns that knob on and he says, Billy, we're gonna do a lot of quarterback run game. And if they can't stop it, we're gonna continue to go to it. This game's not gonna be about you throwing a hundred yards over there to tie foul. And it's not gonna be about that. We're gonna run some QB power. We're gonna run some read option. We're gonna get you going downhill until the defense proves that they can stop it. And I think that this game against Indiana, that could be something that comes up huge. I thought against Virginia was gonna be a thing, but it really wasn't, but I'm going back to it. I'm coming back around to it. I think Billy Edwards in that rushing ability could be something that is really important for the Terps, something that we look at that as something that is really going to determine, can Maryland, how can Maryland continue the success on offense, can Billy Edwards continue the success? He's proven that he can throw the football. We know he can run the ball. We've seen the pass. We've seen it this year too. We know what kind of athlete he is. I mean, so he seems like a complete type of player right now, but still. And Dan is better than what we've played and regression could set in just because of the atmosphere on the road playing the best team we've played this year. There could be some pressure to that. And I think that you're not always gonna play your best. And I'm trying to predict when that could come. And I think it could come this week. But I do think if he gets those legs running, if he starts running the ball and it can be on third down, that could be a huge thing. It could be an X factor in the game. It could make him really hard to stop. Then Indiana starts worrying about that. And the next thing you know, Ty fell and streaking down the field. Or Kane and Prather streaking down the field. Or we hit press and how or in the end zone or something like that. And so I do think that he's played really high level. Like I said, it's top five on PFF's rating in terms of quarterback so far this year in college football. Like that's a pretty cool firm to be able to do that with the amount of teams in college football. And so I think he's played really well. But I do think this is the week we kind of unleash him as a runner. And that might be how we win this game. I don't know if we win this game without Billy Edward's legs. I think that's something that we'll have to happen and something that we might need in this game. That's all we have for today. Thank you for listening a lot on Terps.
