“Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish.”
 - Jonah 1:3 (KJV)

(upbeat music) Jonah wasn't being lazy when he ran from God's call to go to Nineveh. Jonah rose up to flee unto Tashish, Jonah 1-3. Nineveh was the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and the Assyrians were brutal. An exhibition of Assyrian art at the British Museum contained in the words of the Guardian newspaper, some of the most appalling images ever created. It's thought the Assyrians invented crucifixion, but their cruelty went way beyond that. Jonah didn't want to go to Nineveh as a sacrificial lamb and he didn't want them to be saved. Hatred, unforgiveness, a grudge, Jonah had it all. And there are plenty of people today who wouldn't want to see some others saved owing to history or ethnicity or some long-held grudge. Let's not be that. If God loves people, we are to work for their salvation and leave the past in the past. I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. (upbeat music)
