[Music] Welcome to Talking Giants player profiles and projections brought to you by Captain Morgan. I'm your host Bob, he's going to hear with my co-host Justin Pennick. And it is time for the final player profile and projection Justin and we are looking at quarterback Daniel Jones. He is he is the longest tenured New York giant. This is his fifth year of having the last PPP. There's been years where he said, is this the last Daniel Jones PPP. Last year was not one of them. He is back. Daniel Jones, the six foot five 220 pound quarterback 27 years old draft six overall. And he got a four year $160 million contract from a regime that didn't draft him was the first ever QB to have his fifth year option declined and then resigned with that. And after a successful 2022 he injured his neck and then tore his ACL after possibly his worst stretch of football. He's extremely likely to be in his final year with the giant and I don't fully know what to expect for a few reasons just. Is this the final Daniel Jones PPP. Oh, I kind of wanted to talk about that at the end. Yeah, we'll do it at the end. I'm saving that question for the end. But Bobby, 2023 was so bad, man. And we can analyze why it was bad and whether it was him, whether it was the old line, whether it was the, you know, the lack of, you know, work that they did in the summer and maybe they had too much confidence stemming from 2022. But I really don't want to fully do all of that because I want to lead off with this question. What do we have to worry about his 2023 play that may impact his 2024? Like you could talk about taking sex, owning pressure, we're going to talk about the need for more explosivity. But Bobby, I want to start off with this. I am worried more than any little quarterback thing or stat or analytics, CPOE, explosiveness, whatever. I am worried that Daniel Jones is not confident in himself as a quarterback. And I feel like if you have a quarterback that is not confident, that does not think that he can make throws, short, intermediate, deep, if you have a quarterback that is very conscious of being in the pocket and taking hits. Am I taking too many sacks? Am I not taking enough? It should I hold onto the ball for longer? If we have a quarterback that is second guessing himself and his abilities, that is not a great place to be. And this is an episode where I feel like everyone you need to listen to the end to use your comments. So please comment because it does help the algorithm, but listen to the end. Because I actually I'm glad you started with that because that's kind of my starting thing too is he's going to be asked to do more than he's done in a long time while coming off of a serious injury. That's like a that's a pretty worrisome combo like 2000 just in 2023. It is an outlier bad year for Daniel Jones. Yeah, you know, like his play, you know, after the first six games of 2020, and then all of 2021 was very similar to 2022. But in 2022 he had a better offensive scheme. They were able to win games. That's something we talked about in that season, like even at the height of like six and seven and one. Like it's we're said, it's not much his, his level of play is not much different. He just finally has good offensive scheme. You know, the biggest difference was him utilizing his legs to throw in the run more than he had ever done before. That was, that was really just utilizing his legs in general. But to 2023 Bobby, like, that's not I don't, that is not Daniel Jones's norm. Daniel Jones's norm is not your Marcus Russell. Yeah, his norm is that, you know, second half of 2020 through 2022. But, and that, that's also not good enough to be here long term, which we talked about when they signed the contract. But here's the thing that brought words me most. It's not that. Oh, last year was an outlier year. It's just, I don't have the confidence that he's going to just bounce back to that level of play. While asking to being asked to do more and coming off of a major injury and forget a second neck injury. Like, that's a lot. That's a locked stack against him. And, and like, as far as this season goes, right? And this isn't about like him being here long term. I'm just talking about getting through this season, like, and getting him back to that level of play to make the season watchable. Yeah, man. You know, one of the things that we really talked about after the contract extension in 2000, after 2022 and heading into 2023 is this is great. And this is, this is good, but Daniel Jones still needs to re still needs to reach a level of XYZ of getting more explosive of targeting more areas of the field and taking a step up as an offense. And now, we're unfortunately at a point where we're asking Daniel Jones to do the same thing that we want him to do even after 2022. But there is just still that question of can Daniel Jones even get back to that efficient 2022. And I, I, I don't know the answer of either of those two questions. I have a path in which I think that we can get there. And it can look different. And I, and I want to talk about that. But I'll get your, your thoughts on that. Like, we need not only do we need Daniel Jones to return back to what he was in 2022, efficient, utilizing his legs and offense that doesn't turn over the ball as much. But we need Daniel Jones to still take a step up. And I don't know if he can even do that. I honestly, I don't think that conversation, because this, this likely is Daniel Jones last year. He is essentially a very expensive placeholder. This year, right. So this, this, this is the first like player profile, PPP we've done for Daniel Jones works just like we're not talking about him as a whole and what his whole future lives is just kind of like getting through this year. We were pretty, Hey, I will say we were pretty sold on you and I that 2022 is going to be his last year too. We were pretty sold, man. Sure. But here's the difference is that it's going to take a lot more than what happened in 2022 for me to be bought into this long term. Right. Well, not even. Well, last year answer questions for me. And we're going to talk like last year answered questions that I had on the. When we did our giants pending free agents, and we spent a lot of time on Daniel Jones and what we want out of the contract and all that and are what we like about bringing back what we worry about. We had one big question mark and we'll go through that. And those, those questions to me were answered. Right. And there's, I just don't see a level of play happening that has me happy about that, even if he is the best option for another one year placeholder. But let's go through some basic stats last year. I want to say, I want to say some thoughts on Daniel Jones post 2024. At the end, because we got to hit. There's a lot of stuff we have to hit on this episode is why he gets his own. Last year, 67 and a half percent completion percentage actually a career high 151 yards per game 5.7 yards per attempt to touch down six interceptions. 34 rushing yards per game and a rushing touch. I mean, those are a career worse than yards per attempt, yards per game touchdown rate and interception rate. So I want to talk about the, I want to talk about the online issue, deep passing, but let's, so let's talk, let's, let's talk about that my 2023 disappointment. 2000 disappointment from last season doesn't come from being one and five with two touchdowns and six interceptions. Obviously, as a giant fan, very disappointed in them. But because three of the interceptions were popped up from say, Juan Barkley and Darren Waller's hands, you know, and I think him playing to his potential would have only changed the outcome of the Seahawks game. Right. So we're talking about a difference of one and five and two and four in those games. My disappointment is that our fears on the day that we signed him were realized. That is he is an inherently conservative QB and the 2022 play style wasn't simply because of the old line and their only deep threat being dariously. That the open hole shots that were avoided in 2022 would repeat in a major way. There were opportunities in every game, even Dallas, even Dallas, that Daniel Jones left hundreds of yards on the field. I'm talking in between the plays where the offensive line totally broke down and screwed him and gave him no chance and plays that were dropped into Miami Dolphins game where you look at the stats and say no way this guy played well but he actually did in that game. In between all that, he left hundreds of yards on the field. When they added Darren Waller, they added Jalen Hyatt. They tried to be more aggressive and there was stuff open. There was stuff where if you anticipated better, it would have been hit and he just didn't do it. And those were listened to if you want to go back and listen to us on the day he signed the contract and our episode where we broke down all the Giants pending free agents. That was the biggest worry. And those questions were answered for me. Right. Do I think Daniel Jones would be better than he was last year? Obviously. Is he as bad as last year? Obviously not. But what was answered is like, this is a quarterback where you've got to kind of tailor this around quick game and short average depth of target. And if it becomes more explosive, that's better. But you're just not hitting a ceiling that you want when you pay a quarterback that much. And it got a little frustrating that it became a certain point last year to where a fear heading into 2023 is was Brian Dable, Mike Kafka's quick game from 2022 figured out. Did the Eagles in those two games crack something? Right? Did they unlock something? And I think it's clear that they did, you know, the whole Eagles game and then the playoff game where we got demolished. And it's like, I think the league started to just pick up on it. And then hearing how cornerbacks after games that had success against Daniel Jones just be like, yeah, we kind of knew where the ball was going. He telegraphs where he wants to go. I'm not smart enough to see here that that's what Daniel Jones is doing all the time. But when you hear multiple cornerbacks from from multiple teams say that Daniel Jones is very predictable in terms of where the ball goes. It's a little frustrating. He got baited into. He got baited in on coverages that look like pre-snapped. They were taking the deep ball away and they just pounced on it. Right? The 49ers did that. The Seahawks did it. And it got, it got, it was very, very predictable. But I don't want to ignore Bobby. Andrew Thomas fucks up his hamstring the first series of the season. And, you know, one of the things worst fears every year, heading into the season is Andrew Thomas gets hurt. I mean, especially with that offensive line last year with Evan Neal had so many question marks and everything like that. The season's over. Like you lose Andrew Thomas in the season's over. And our fears were acknowledged and came true, literally the first series of the year. And Bobby, I couldn't believe it, man. Like you look at Daniel Jones's sacks by year. Two thousand nineteen thirty eight. Two thousand twenty forty five. Two thousand twenty one twenty two when he only played 11 games. Two thousand twenty two forty four. Bobby Daniel Jones played six games last year. He was sacked 30 times. That's a, that's a season's worth. It's almost a season's worth of sacks that he had in six games. And even though PFF attributed five of them to Daniel Jones and, you know, the pressure, the, the shared, the QB shared responsibility of pressure for Daniel Jones was twenty percent, which out of quarterbacks that qualified last year was sixth highest. So Daniel Jones does own a good amount of the pressure that he takes, but there's still twenty five sacks and through six games that are on the table there that's due to the offensive line. Dude, it was bad, man. It was really, really bad. And I do think it halted and ruined whatever plans that they had and yes, there were plays on the field. Like you said, and I agree with you that the world plays on where Daniel Jones left, but the old line was just a horrible disaster. So this is where the people who did for the first 12 minutes like don't know why they'll agree, right? Last year was a disaster in the game specifically that he played right when people like to make the argument that, oh, well, Tyra Taylor, you know, and Tommy DeVito pushed the ball down the field now. Tommy DeVito actually had like the same D throw percentage at all, even out at the end. Tyra Taylor was more aggressive than Daniel Jones. So, but the pressure Daniel Jones was under. And those games was unreal, right? It was on freaking real outside of like the Raiders game, which he got injured like he was under pressure 46% of the time last year. And he had a career high by double per sac rate, right? He was getting, and his, and those five starts before the Raiders game, he was getting pressure 20 times per game, 20 times per game, right? And so like sometimes you look at, or there was 20, not 20 times, but there was 20 pressures allowed per game from different offensive alignment. So people say, oh, well, Tyra Taylor was pressured this amount of times per game. No, that actually wasn't true at all. Honestly, almost, almost half of Tyra Taylor's pressures came in the games of relief of DJ and San Fran in Miami. The games that he started, it wasn't like that. So he was getting pressured. You can get pressured by more than one person on net play, you know, Doug analytics had the stat about how he was the quickest pressure in the NFL, you know, and his pressure by a game. Week one, 67% week to Cardinals, 30%, 44%, 46%, 44%. And when you judge some people like, well, he created sex, right? He created sex. Last year he did, right? You know, DJ's pressure to stack rate was the second worst after Tommy DeVito in the NFL last year. But in 2022 and 21, he was 13th and ninth in those rates. And right, that does correlate to Andrew Thomas and just not having guys like Marcus McEath and into you. The other side, flip side of that is it can also correlate to a more aggressive passing attack that they tried to implement. So that's the thing is if Andrew Thomas is healthy, it does fix a lot of those issues because, like you said, it was, that's when I say that like the two, one in five record doesn't bother me so much because I only think him playing his potential in each game leads to them beating the Seahawks, right? He actually played well versus Miami. Sam Fran, they really had no shot. You know, Dallas, you know, he missed a good amount of throws, but they had no shot. But that pressure that he faced in the beginning of last season was unlike anything I've ever seen for a quarterback to. So can we transition to this year because I have a big talking point this year? I think you've heard me say it a couple of times. Are you good to transition to 2024 in Daniel Jones? Do you want to talk about deep passing and to start off with that? I just want to talk about in general Daniel Jones, Bobby, even if Daniel Jones is a worse quarterback than what he was in 2022 because let's, let's be real, like he had a mastery of that offense. He had a mastery of whatever he was being asked to do, right? Even if, even if Dave Boley and Kafka wanted him to throw the ball deep more between personnel and just certain issues that it didn't happen. But for what he was asked to do, he had a mastery of it. So even if Daniel Jones is a worse version than what he was in 2022 and how I'll even go a step further and say a worse version than what he was in 2021 and 2020. I think the rest of the offensive infrastructure is going to be better. I think without a doubt between coaching, offensive line and receivers. This is the best infrastructure that Daniel Jones has had in his career by a mile where you have the tackles, hopefully figured out, hopefully healthy. Thomas, Andrew, Thomas, cannot get injured. I don't even go a step further and say, Jim in Illinois, cannot get injured. I cannot get injured. The interior we're going to live with, but I mean, hey, there's veterans there and there's a second round pick that we hope takes a step up. So the offensive line is going to be better. The receivers, you have four guys that you can go to that do that all do things very well, including one receiver that you hope is going to be a superstar. So even if Daniel Jones, and you saw a little bit of this in the Texans game, even if Daniel Jones is not a good quarterback or a disappointed with his play. I still do think this team could win more football games because everybody else around him is going to be better and is going to make his life easier. Do you agree? Not full. I don't have full expectations because I'm worried about him coming off the injury and being asked to do more and lack of confidence. Okay. If he wasn't coming off injury, I would, but we don't know exactly what it's going to look like, but here's where it comes down to Justin. I'm going to steal your line, the explosive place. And we did a segment on this in camp, and I'm going to repeat a lot of the similar things from that. You know, Daniel Jones has been, and this isn't just last year, right? So we're not going off of last year's simple size. He's been last, second to last, and last. The last three years in deep throw rate, right? He's completed 20 of 58 of those 34%. He ranked 24th in that category in 2021 9th and 2000.2 and then 46 and 2023. You know, he's been 39th of 45 last and then 37th of 39 and average depth of target. We've talked about the offense has to be built about the around the wide receivers strengths and not Daniel Jones. Like, the real expectations for him, which not saying I'm expecting him to do it, but it's like, my demand for him is to be top 15 in both those categories with the personnel they have, right? Like, I think anything less than that is a failure for him. Like, you have these three deep threats and Malik neighbors, Jalen Hyde, and Darius Leighton, right? And Tyrog Taylor, who had been a historically conservative with the ball, had the third highest deep rate last year because he realized we had insulating and hiding and trusted it. And Dave will got a taste for that. That is what Dave will wants to do. Tyrog is also a 15th in completion, right? You look at a guy like Derek Carr, who was 16th in throw rate and 13th in completion rate last year behind an awful offensive line and a receiving group that is worse than the Giants unit this year. Like, the giant, he needs that, that should be the demand, right? We'll fill in the cracks with how everything else looks just and if we're, how many interceptions we're throwing or, you know, how, you know, EPA play and what we're doing. But that needs to be the demand for this to be even, even if you move off of him for this to be like, all right, we kind of got what we wanted out of Daniel Jones for one year. Did you give a number of how many deep throws that you would like to see? Not a volume number, but be top 15 and deep throw rate and deep completion percentage. All right, so here's, so here's the thing, Bobby. I've been highlighting my expectation. I've been highlighting the summer throws and plays of 10 to 19 yards this summer, this summer. That's what I've been highlighting a lot this offseason. I'm going to talk a little bit about that. You said top 15? Yes. If their car did it, Daniel Jones could do it behind, uh, behind this O line. So he had 21 in 2022. And that was, that was last. And usually the leader is around high 60s to 70s. Bobby, I, he, he can double what he did in 2022. And he'd still be in the high teens to low 20s and deep, and deep throw rate. He can double what he did in 2022 and make it 42. And it's still below, wait, wait below 15. That should be the demand with this offensive coach in this receiving group and with Andrew Thomas healthy. That should be the demand from any quarterback that gets put in here. You look at Ty Rock Taylor's historical numbers. He's been very conservative. Ty Rock Taylor was third. Like, that should be the, that is, again, that is not my expectation because of what Daniel Jones has shown. That's saying that's what I think Daniel Jones is going to do. I, that should be the demand in the place out for this offense. And I've been working at it all. They have, they have where I think the compromises is throwing 10 to 19 air yards and pushing the ball past the sticks, but throwing the intermediate part of the field, which is more difficult to do because it relies on the offensive line. And it also relies on your wide receivers getting open. But I think between, between at least slate in the neighbors, I think we trust those guys to do it. And I think they can do it quite well. So let's look back at 2022 and Daniel Jones throwing the 10 to 19 air yards portion of the field. An area of the field that is not talked about a lot, like, hey, hand up, it's been an area of the field that I've ignored through all these years of covering the giants. Haven't looked at it, but let's talk about 2022 because 2023, I'm throwing out the fucking window. Daniel Jones was actually fifth and completion percentage over expected an intermediate throws 13th and yards per attempt when throwing to that intermediate part of the field. I was second in pressure rate. So pressure rate was high, but Jones was 15th in total attempts in 2022 at 96. Tool was 10th with 118. The area that I want Jones to get closer to the top 10 in area and I want Jones closer to the top 10 and intermediate throws this year. And Bobby with this wide receiver staff, Hyatt, but a specific neighbors in Slayton and specifically to Malik neighbors, the throws of 10 to 19 yards can easily turn into 20 plus with a broken tackle. The yards after catch that Brian Dable is going to help scheme up and create. I think it is unfair. It's unfair, but you're right. It should be demanded, but it is unfair to think that Daniel Jones is going to somehow get an above average deep throw rate. It should be more. It needs to be more than 21 in 2022. It needs to be more, but it's unfair to expect something like in the 40s. But I will take attacking because he's not going to do it. Okay, but that then he should then again, that's why it's his last year of the Giants QB. But I'm just I'm trying to search for something positive and something that he does already kind of well. And that was in 2022, throwing to the intermediate part of the field with a bad offensive line and really only dairy is slated as a legitimate option to throw it to that intermediate part of the field. He did it well. He did it at an above average rate. And I think that's the area which can be really increased with the offensive line and the personnel that we have this year. Yeah, and though that's where offensive line makes the biggest difference, right? But I'm also like, until this offensive line, I'm not putting full faith in them like that, that range to me is a very offensive line dependent. The deep throw rate is actually as easy as the, you know, we've talked about it like it's harder to hit throws that are 18 yards than it is that are 30 yards when you have a bad offensive line because you're just talking about a guy winning vertically on the sideline versus a guy having to set something up, break inside, beat the zone coverage type of stuff. But also while doing all this, right, he does need to stay efficient in the quick game, which they're going to be plenty of that Malik neighbors will be targeted a ton there. Well, you know, while they'll rob us and we'll have one of the lowest average depths of target and a ton of targets too. So you're still going to do that, but this team has become more explosive with their personnel, right? Right. Like if you, if you looked at this death chart, right, you say what single players stopping them from being an explosive offense. You would, you would argue the most is the quarterback. Exactly. Right. So that's why, again, not my expectation. That's my demand. If their car can do it last year, Daniel Jones can do it this year. Let me talk to you about something, Bobby Skinner, before we transition into something else because this last PPP, Holy smokes. Can you believe it Morgan? This has been such a fun summer and like I said, they ain't going anywhere. They're just getting started with us. So we appreciate you guys very much. So, I mean, Justin, I hit on the offensive line issues, the basic staff, the passing, the expectations. Anybody there? I was just seeing I was gonna alert that Rahim Lane was cut. Oh, no from the Giants. Yeah, I was worried. We're recording this in the middle of cut down day and we were like, panic like, please, if they cut Tommy to be, please don't make it do it during this episode. You want to talk about the contract and then we'll talk about is this his last year of the Giants. Yeah, yeah, talk to me about the contract. So it's a $47 million cap hit this year because they're not touching it. Right. If they were confident in Daniel Jones, they would just, they wouldn't be a $47 million cap if they would have changed, move some money around. You know, they converted last training camp, $8.4 million into a signing bonus, making it less of a clean break after this year. But if they do cut them after this year, pre June 1st, everyone likes to bring up posting first, but like that shit really doesn't happen very often unless he desperately needs it. Unless it's during Waller. Yeah, and that's the retired. $22 million in dead cap with $19 million savings after this year. It would have been 18 million in dead cap with 20 million in the same as they didn't touch it last off season. And then 11 million in dead cap 47 in savings if they keep them through 2025 and cut them after that year. So let's talk about that because you hinted at it. Let's ask the question and let's answer it. Is this the final Daniel Jones PPP? I don't know. I will give an answer after we talk about it, but I don't think it's as much of a slam dunk. No, like, yes. Like, is this the last Daniel Jones PPP? I don't think it's as much of a slam dunk. Yes, as you think, because if the Giants find themselves, I'm not talking about like nine wins and a playoff win. I'm not talking about that. I'm even talking about seven wins and being in a worse draft position than what they were this year. And either there's a quarterback that they like that they can't get because they can't trade up or whatever the situation, the circumstance may be. It's not, it's not a total slam dunk that this is his last year is my point. And it's not because that the Giants don't want to court. They want a quarterback. They acknowledge that this offseason that they were willing to move heaven and earth to get Drake May. But there are circumstances, a lot of circumstances out of their control, including Brian Dable being a good enough coach to coach up the football team to more victories than they should get in on a year and year out basis that they may have to roll with Daniel Jones for an additional year and also have a very big cap hit go along with it. So that's a very good point, right? Because, like, you meet for all the same reasons. I don't need to repeat what you said. I agree with you 100%. But so they would save $19 million in cap space. So it's basically, I, we can, if they're, if let's just say they're not in a position, they're draft, or there's not a quarterback. Let's just say that, because I don't think they're going to be honest, right? And that's why we talked about the draft, even though me and you didn't want to JJ McCarthy or Michael Pennics, like the downside is you kind of have to get lucky to fix this quarterback situation. So the question is, do you use that $19 million on another quarterback and free agency? And I actually think it's tough. But it, they would have to win games, right? Like, I feel like I'm repeating ourselves from the 2022 PPP where we kind of dropped the stats and like, you know what it really has to do for this not to be defined on one win game. I think if he plays at a similar level, the 2022 or 21, and they win 70 games or six games, I actually think they would rather move on. But one, just, they would probably want something fresh in their fourth year as their regime together. And knowing that maybe you downgrade, if you go sign Jacobi Bursett or whoever. But they may just want a fresh face and someone who operates the offense a little more the way they want, even though they might be the same, or a lesser version, a lesser player of Daniel Jones. I'm pretty confident it is the final one. And again, the only, the only thing is if they make, they win games and make the playoffs again. And I don't think that would convince them of like, like they did two years ago, like, oh, this C were right. I think it would just be like, I would, we're with him for another year. Yeah, we're with them for another year and we would have to, again, not touch the 2025 cap. It's $41.6 million. And then 2026, they can just, they can cut them. They basically cleanly nothing. 11 million. It would be a clean break. That's a clear break. So, I don't know, man, like, of course, I lean, yes, like, yes, this is the last Daniel Jones. This is the last Daniel Jones. And I understand that. But I learned from 2000, you know, heading into the 2022 season where we were like, yeah, this is it, man. Like, of course. Now, granted, like you said, there's been no player ever before Daniel Jones to have his fifth year option to client and then to get a contract extension. But I learned from that where we were just so, yeah, this is it. This is it. This is it. And I don't want to be like that. Again, I want to be open to more possibilities, even though I do think they would be very willing to. Eat 22 million dollars of Daniel Jones's salary to save 19 million dollars in cap space and just, again, have a clean break in year four. Yeah. So I'll lean. Yes. My final answer is yes. Yeah. But if we did the percentile percentage game, which I hate the percentage game, I think you're probably right now to like a 75 and I'm at like a. I'm at like a 92%. Yeah, that's fair. That's fair. But I, because I agree with what you're saying, we're like, he, we'll see. Sometimes the grass isn't greener. Yeah. Sure. Right. And that's where it's like, where this is why you talk in real life and not social media world, right? Because, like, think about the free Asian quarterback signed last offseason. Do you call me per set? Forget Kirk cousin. It's obviously. And also look at the quarterback free agency class next year. The sidestack Prescott, Doc Prescott could also would be probably signed before we won. Yeah, it's basically. I mean, look it up. It's, it's no, it's nobody fun. It's bad. It's barren. Yeah. My buddy, Boker and I looked at it because we were talking about that. He's a cowboy fan. So we were talking about Dak and, you know, we were talking about if the Cowboys moved on from Dak Prescott, who would they go and sign? And it's just there. There's no good free Asian quarterback out there. Yeah. So you have Sam Darnell, Jacoby percent, Taylor Hineke. Yeah, that's, that's essentially it. Those are backups. So, all right, Justin, that is an episode. And that is year six of player profiles and projections. I hope that you guys enjoyed them.
