(upbeat music) - Yeah, man. You know the music. - I love that. - You love the intro there. - Yeah. - Dan and Don, Colin football show, the D and D, C, F, B. We're all over it. - We are. - We got a big show tonight, today, whenever you're happy to be listening. - When do you listen to podcasts? - I listen to podcasts, well, often on my three, four mile walks. If I'm not on the nature trail, because we went on the nature trail, I like to look for owls. - Yeah. - But if I'm just-- - You bird watching? Actually, I think I need to watch for owls more in neighborhoods. That's who they're attacking people. But yeah, a lot of those podcasts I'll listen to when I'm exercising or walking, and I love it. I mean, and the more that you can listen to, do you have a better understanding of what's going on out there? - That's right. I mean, the podcast you listen to include, like earlier this year, the most weird Clemson fan of all time breaking down their third string right tackle. - He broke down the Georgia Alabama game too. So now he's branching out. - He is branching out. And so his name's Brian, and he does this Clemson podcast, and I like the heck out of him. - We're getting him on. - Yes. - We're getting him on the show. - All right, cool. - We'll bring Brian on. I had a good weekend, and we'll get into the pics from last week and some of the good games went to Nashville. We don't have to talk about what game I went to attend in Nashville. - Was it the one where the Titans lost? - It was. - To the former quarterback. - To Malik Willis, yes. - Oh, it's just a guess. - Yeah, Malik Willis, formerly of Auburn, formerly of Liberty, now formerly of the Titans. He never had a chance, and then he did have a chance, and he destroyed my team. - Amazing. - Had a good weekend up there. It's interesting, you know, when I go somewhere, and of course Nashville's known for the country music, the big country music musician, bars named after him, that's always a good time, but I'm looking for a sports bar, especially on a weekend with college football in the mix, and I knew this might happen, or it only makes sense that it happened, but there's more places downtown where you can watch games now than there had been, and just solely for watching football, because they legalize online gambling there. They didn't legalize brick and mortar casinos, they legalized mobile sports betting. So, Nashville, where everyone wants to buy a bar, that's what these gambling companies have done. And so, while technically, you're not in there handing cash over to a book maker, they've got incentives to get you to sign up for whatever the company may be. Like, BetMGM has a bar. It's like the classiest one there. - Yeah. - It's actually inside Bridgestone Arena. So, very few people know about that. So, if you're going to Nashville this weekend, looking for a place or any weekend coming up, you want to go to a place that has games on and isn't overly crowded, go to the Bridgestone, BetMGM is on a side, and you go up an elevator, it's like a secret club. - I like it, I like it. - But we ended up at DraftKings Bar. - So, DraftKings got a place, is there-- - Fandall has a place. - Fandools, okay. - And they've got incentives for you there to sign up, and then the waitress or waiter gets like a cut of money from DraftKings whenever you sign up. - So, she's aggressively trying to get you to sign up because she makes money. - So, you have to be a first-time user. DraftKings is really cool, they had a massive wall of TVs, the biggest games at the time are on the bigger TVs. And she said, hey, if you sign up, you get this incentive. I had unfortunately already signed up for these different companies. My brother and cousin hadn't, so they get $250 free dollars to bet with, they bet all of their money, all of their free fake money, even though it's real, and lost it all. I watched this happen over the coast of four hours, and I said, yep, that's what this game is like boys. - They were betting on games. - They were throwing 50, 100 bucks here and there. - And they lost it. - Yeah, they're like, I like USC here, we saw what Michigan did to USC, they say. I like Vanderbilt to come back and win this thing. You know, that didn't happen, so it was, is it sick of me that I kind of enjoyed, because it wasn't technically money they deposited, but I kind of enjoyed watching them. - Watching blow it all? - Blow it all, yeah. - That's concerning because we work together every day, and so if you're taking joy in their misery, I can't imagine, but what misery that I've, well, that I go through that you're secretly getting a kick out. - Oh no, none at all, none at all. But it was a good time in Nashville, watched some really good games. Of course, the marquee game I was checking out was Tennessee, Oklahoma, and I got more nervous as we got closer and closer to game time. I hate these 630 starts for the biggest games of the week. That's what you're gonna be feeling this weekend. - Yeah, got to Alabama and Georgia, and I am watching it solo. How about them app? - That's usually the best way to go. - That's what I prefer, actually, is watching a big game like that by myself, 'cause other people talk, right? - Well, it's not just that. It's other people are for the wrong team. - Yeah. - So it could end up ugly. It could, it could, it could end up where my feelings get hurt over a holding call or whatever. See, if you're watching it with a bunch of fans for the other team like Alabama, Georgia gets a holding call. They're pleased as punch. I'm saying words that I'm like inventing new words that are, I'm inventing new nasty words. - I think you've had new friends in the past who thought they were just watching a game with Dan, you know? And they were surprised by how you react to some of these things. - Yeah, that's what happened. - Same here. - I'm watching it solo and that's that. - That's good. So this last week, it looks like our best picker on Run Your Pool, the FM Talk 106.5 College Pickham Challenge. Robbie Lawson went nine and one. - Wow. - That's a pretty dang good week. Those were some tough games to pick. Maybe I'm saying that because I had a terrible week. And a lot of folks went eight and two, a lot of seven and three years there. I'm worried, so sweaty daddy, whoever that is, went eight and two. I'm thinking people might think that's me because of our past conversations about my children. - Yeah. - They're called sweaty baby. She's no longer sweaty. But we have a new leader in the clubhouse to M. Frazier for the year is 28 and 12. If he was actually betting these games, he'd be making a lot of money. - He'd be a much more rich man. - How 'bout me somewhere I missed a week? - Which doesn't make sense. Because you've picked 'em, we've looked at them every week. I don't know how that happened. - I don't know how. So I didn't hit the final thing. - Submits or something? - Maybe, maybe this. And so I'm 19 and 11, which is good, but I'm out of the running. - Oh, you still would have been in the mix. That's, if you'd went nine and one, you'd be tied for the lead right now. But there's always this week, right? So you can get back into it. A couple of the games from last week. What did you think? I'll tell you what I think after this. But your thoughts, objective thoughts on Tennessee, Oklahoma, Tennessee gets the win. It's a 10-point win. They cover the spread. Josh Hypo gets a hero's welcome in a way there. What do you think? - They could have maybe run it up more, I don't know. I mean, Oklahoma's defense is pretty good. But Tennessee, it was a game where they were obviously in control of the game. And then when the backup quarterback came in, he was able to use his legs and put a dent in that big lead. But they covered, they won. It was on the road. Redemption for Josh Hypo, going back to Oklahoma, where he was fired. - Yep. - Probably without reason by stoops back in the day. - Yeah, he was just kind of the fall guy. - Yep. - You know what really struck me? The Tennessee defense was hitting so hard. They were absolutely crushing along the sideline, up the middle. I haven't seen the Tennessee defense lay the wood like that since, I mean, can I say, Al Wilson? Can I say some of those dudes? - Well, Al Wilson, he was an all-timer and a guy that, if you were looking for somebody that was gonna lay a lick on somebody. Al Wilson, a lot of years for the Broncos too, right? - Mm-hmm. - Yeah. - A long time ago. - Some other games that were really interesting. I think maybe the game of the week was a close call between Vandy, Missouri, of all games. And then Colorado Baylor, as a Shador Sanders non-believer here, he got them into overtime with an unbelievable throw at the end of the game to get his guy in the end zone. Hellmary that actually worked. And then Travis Hunter, who has to be the best player in the country, bar none, stops them on the goal line, stops Baylor from tying the game there. Colorado, even if they stink, they're so fun to watch. - Yeah, and Travis Hunter by himself is amazing to watch. Some say he needs to put on a little more weight to be able to pull this stuff off in the NFL. I don't know, but you watch him at the college level. He's incredible. - It seems to me like most people say he'll be a receiver at the next level. And I think that might be a little safer gig even though receivers get knocked out all the time, but maybe more money off to check the contracts. I think receivers make bigger money than cornerbacks too. - Well, receivers are make, yeah, I think you're right. I don't, years past, that might not have been the case, but the current trend is if you're a big receiver, like a number one, as they say, on a roster, you're getting paid. - What else kind of stood out to you? You had Miami, I thought South Florida would keep it close. I even called for a close upset. I regret that. And Cam Ward, he's one of these dudes whose name is at the top of the list when it comes to quarterbacks going into the NFL next year. - Yeah, I mean, he's producing on the field. There's other names out there, but Cam Ward is actually elevating that Miami program. Like we haven't seen them elevated. And again, it's early in the year, but what we've seen so far, Cam Ward seems to be the real deal and maybe so is Miami. - And you talk about it being early in the year and trying to make projections based off of game to game. You know, when Notre Dame beat Texas A&M, we thought these guys mean business. Bradley Leonard is the guy. He'll be in the Heisman conversation. And then we've seen Notre Dame have some real trouble since then with USC beating LSU in week one, and then continuing to be dominant weeks after that, I thought they would have no problem going into the big house and beating Michigan, even if it was a close game, but Michigan took care of business. - And barely, it was a great finish. I thought that was the best game of the weekend, I thought. That was the most fun game to watch, great ending. And Michigan only threw the ball for like 55 yards, something like that. You went a major college football game against somebody like Southern Cal, and you have no proficiency in throwing the football. That's amazing. - Yeah, Orgy threw for 32 yards. The quarterback there for Michigan, they rushed as a team for 290 yards. - That's who they are. - And don't you know Brian Kelly's looking at that game plan now going, what was I doing in Vegas? I should have followed the Michigan blueprint there 'cause it worked for them. A lot more to get to in our show here and switch it up a little bit. Have our Paul Finebaum interview coming up right after this. Special guest we'll be talking to you later in the show. - Yeah, Trey Wallace from Outkick. hometown guy doing big things up in Nashville and covers college football. We'll talk with him as well. - All right, more of the Dan and Dalton college football show on the way. (upbeat music) - It's time for football Friday with Paul Finebaum, preceded by Bryant Bank. Your hometown bank with Big Bank benefits located in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Now, here's Dan Brennan and Dalton our wig. - And of course now here's Paul Finebaum woman's football Friday with Finebaum. Paul, good morning, how are you? - Good morning, we finally got to a real weekend, didn't we? - I think we're there. I think we're there with one big, big, big headline game, obviously. We'll look back at last week as well and kind of pick up the pieces from there. - Yeah, and we had a top 25 SEC match up last week, Paul, that I know you're keeping your eye on, just like all the other games. But so many storylines we discussed last week in that Tennessee at Oklahoma game and score ended up being 25 to 15. I think the story of the game was once again, Tennessee's defense, forcing Jackson Arnold out of the game. - Yeah, and out of the starting lineup, and what was so interesting about that game is that all week long I've got idle calls from Tennessee fans. By the way, they covered the spread, but fans are saying, "Oh come Josh Heifel went easy "on his alma mater, like, I mean, Tennessee fans "are now to the point where they haven't had "a championship, I don't know, forever." And they want to go out and beat Oklahoma by 50 points. And they're not happy with just kind of a middling 10 point win, which felt like about 30. - Yeah, Tennessee fans have now become Georgia fans. Oh, in that wonderful. - So where would you ask for? - Also Oklahoma, do they know how to grow grass out there? What was going on with everybody's footing? - Well, I'm not really sure. The Ag campus at Oklahoma is up and running at the moment, but it's at Oklahoma State. - Yeah, I think that is more of the case. But yeah, it was, I guess we don't, I talked to Jackson Arnold about three weeks ago. He seemed like a nice young man. I'm not sure I'll be seeing him again on my screen. - Yeah, they're moving on to the freshmen. And, you know, I am one of those Tennessee fans. I think they're calling it BVS battered vol syndrome, just taking so many hits over the years with teams we expected to be good. I will say a couple of the things I am worried about moving forward for the Vols, who are now ranked fifth. Niko's ball security and ability to see blitzers off the edge. That seems to be a common theme these last few weeks. And then the defense, once they moved, Michael Hawkins Jr. in at quarterback for Oklahoma, things seem to really open up. And he was kind of able to, using his legs, kind of spread the field out. - Yeah, listen, they're not a perfect team. I think they're a little bit ahead of where people thought. All of a sudden you've got pundits saying they're a national championship team. But I think we should calm down. But I'm pleased. I mean, this was progress for Tennessee, which last year could not win on the road anywhere. - Yeah, well, he probably had Joe Milton to thank for that, but... - No. - Correct. (laughs) - Also, okay, let's get into Auburn football. Plenty of my friends are Auburn graduates and football fans, and I'd like for Auburn to do well. But it's not just the games themselves or the quarterback played more specifically, which was really bad last week. What is Hugh Freeze? There seems to be a disconnect with Coach Freeze and reality. What are you getting out of him? - I had a friend that texted me the other day. It's Hugh Freeze trying to get jimboed, meaning fired and take a big paycheck away. As a settlement, because there's not much he has done that indicates that he really wants this job. He looks lost at times. Looks like he hasn't slept since Ole Miss. And yeah, he's just putting mouth. I mean, he's throwing his players under the box, and then his former player, Bo Wallace, buried him, and then Hugh Freeze came out the other day, "Oh, well, Bo, I love the guy, you know, we're great. "Oh, you're not." When your former quarterback, who led you to the biggest win of your career, says you're a bad guy, and I wouldn't let my own son play for you, that's not going away. And just when you thought it was safe to watch Hugh Freeze again, he said, "We were the better teaming at Arkansas "and we would beat them nine out of nine times." Well, guess what? The only time to count is the one you lost, so shut up already. - And it just seems like the quotes just seem to be odd for the head coach of a big program like Auburn. I don't know how else to describe it, Paul. - Yeah, and my long history of knowing Auburn fans indicates to me that you better win against Oklahoma on Saturday, or otherwise that he really started. And I'm not trying to say he is in Brian Harsonville, but I will say Brian Harson had a better record after 17 games in Hugh Freeze. - Wow, that stings, that really stings. I wonder at what point if this continues, and if he keeps throwing his players under the bus, I mean, the highlight of this year for them has been recruiting. Wonder we're going to start seeing players maybe change their minds. - Quickly, that's the nature of college athletics right now. And there's no such thing as a great recruiting year. I mean, I don't know if it's complete, and the ones we've committed haven't signed yet. - Yeah, and I just thought even his in-game remark that Cam Coleman was kind of loafing on a play, it's like, wow, that's smart. - That's just your best player. Go ahead and make sure that he's unhappy too. - Yeah, yeah, there is a transfer portal here, let us remind you. And of course, looking forward to this week, there's no game bigger in the country than the one going down in Tuscaloosa Saturday night. Alabama. - I'm a Trump ball. - Yeah, the Trump ball, Alabama hosting Georgia. I love this week the breakdown of the Trump menu that he asked for there at Bryant Denny, but I'm looking forward to this. - Hey, can we talk about that for a second? - Sure. - Listen, I'll leave the politics to the pundits, but these are my kind of guys. I forgot, I used to work at McDonald's when I was in high school. I forgot that cheese came on on a play a fish. And I mean, I started getting hungry for a play a fish sandwich with cheese with fries and orange drink and heading to my high school prom. I mean, two polite a few sandwiches. Let me see if I remember that. He wanted hot dogs at halftime. Did he also want a Domino pizza? - I believe so. - Yeah, yeah. - And now the drink order really got me though, Diet Coke. - Oh yeah, always with the Diet Coke. - You gotta watch it, wait slow, Paul. I mean, where was, I mean, you doesn't like Mr. Pibb or Pibb, come on. - After that meal, we might see the former president nodding off, maybe in the third quarter, taking a little nap there. But what a game this is. I mean, this will have a pretty massive effect on the remainder of the season. I'd forgotten that Georgia, because of COVID, haven't really played in a fully packed, Bryant Denny Stadium in quite some time now. That'll be different this weekend. - Yeah, I mean, everything about this game is different, but I think if you're looking for the storyline, it's about Kirby's Mark. You just can't seem to be Alabama. We all know the back story. Nine years there, he made sure everybody knew this. We could have two kids who were born in South Clues, as if that fact were into the game. So I'm siding with Alabama right now. I feel like maybe I'm jumping on the moving parade, but it just seems like all the trend lines are pointing crimson and white. - Oh, they had a great road trip to Wisconsin. I don't know how good Wisconsin is. They not got the first string quarterback early in the game. So that gave them a decided advantage right there. Meanwhile, I think we're all biased by the last thing we saw in Georgia at Kentucky was kind of a mess. - Yeah, I mean, she used to ignore that and say, well, they'll be bill-balanced back, but I don't know what you're grasping for. I did talk to a Vegas guy yesterday who said, listen, when everybody's running one way, we tend to go the other way. In other words, you'd like Georgia minus two. That doesn't mean anything to me since I don't bet, but I am going with the parade. It seems like it's tilting a roll tide right now. - It does. And you know, one change with the shift in networks is this game probably would have been played at 2.30 in the afternoon in years past, but getting a night game at Bryant Denny, there's probably no better quarterback suited for going on the road and playing in those kind of conditions than Carson Beck. And possibly, you know, he reminds us that he's the Heisman contender this weekend. He better. - Well, here's where one advantage comes his way. I mean, he has played at night in Kentucky. By no means is it the same thing, but it's still a simulation and he's been tested. I mean, he's a really good quarterback, but Jalen Milro doesn't look like the kind of guy that gets around. Watch the first couple of minutes of the game. I've talked to Kirby Smart many times, and he's big on the floor of the game. And Georgia has not been able to get started to get Clemson or against Kentucky. He is, I'm sure, sitting in his office right now figuring out a way, how do we get a fast start? What do we do? Because without that, I think some of the same problems are going to come back and haunt Georgia. - And Paul, I did want to ask you about one more player, one we're keeping tabs on closely around here. And that is Ryan Williams, four touchdowns already through three games. I was saying earlier this year, I could see him maybe being mentioned in Heisman contention if he keeps this up. Of course, Georgia is a completely different animal, but how important is Ryan Williams to the success of Alabama's passing game this weekend? - Well, he's huge and listen for that. The Heisman is all about, what did we just see and is there a video attached to it? And should he make some incredible catch to win the game? That's all you're going to see Sunday morning in the rest of the week. So you can get in the Heisman race very quickly. - And you could drop out of it pretty quickly too. Paul, thanks. - Exactly, ask Carson back. - That's where I was kind of going with that. Appreciate all your time this morning, Paul, and the conversation and kind of betting tips, but we'll take him as we can get him. - Enjoy the guys I'll see you next week. - All right, give Steven AR best, Paul, thank you. - Yeah. - Thank you. - At Rascal, Paul Finebaum, the Paul Finebaum Show. Weekdays, two to six right here on FM Talk 1065 and Football Fridays with Finebaum presented by Bryant Bank. We appreciate so much what Bryant Bank has meant to this program for the last few years and bringing us Football Friday. It's always a great time chatting with Paul. - Always is, Paul Finebaum on Fridays. Again, thank you Bryant Bank and Dan and Dalton back with you after this. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Yeah, you like that music 'cause it means it's the Dan and Dalton College Football Show. - That's exactly what that music means. - I love that music and I love that music really more than the rest of the show. That might be the best part of the show. Dan and Dalton with you on your Friday evening. If you're listening on the podcast, of course, thank you very much. Anytime you wish, appreciate that. - Yeah, and looking forward to it. Talk to our next guest. - Oh yeah. - You know, I started following Trey a while back, so I was doing big things in Knoxville and then watched him move on to Outkick and then figured out he's from Mobile originally. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - And I think one day over these last few years, I was talking to you about him. You said, "I know Trey Wallace very well." - Of course, Trey is my guy. How long, Trey? That's the question. - What, I am, well, I don't want to give away by eight. - No, no. - I'm in my upper, I'm in my upper like 30s, a fact to mid-mark in the 30s and I have a feeling somehow or another you were there at my childbirth. - Yeah, but I remember you in a little bit a little league baseball outfit at the Leon Etcheson's furniture. At the remote, you'd be there with your-- - Yes. - Yeah, so long time. - Me and Daniel that so far, man, like he would show up, I would get out of school, he'd be there doing a remote for some other station, but Santa Claus would be there and they would give me help. So I just did bring in the family to the court. - Yeah, yeah, I am. I'm like part of the family and always enjoyed it, but I'm real proud of you. - Thank you, dude. I really appreciate it, man. Trust me, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for an influence like you, dude. So I'm enjoying it. - Yeah, and I enjoy the work you do now at Outkick, Outkick.com, Outkick the coverage and writing about college football and all kinds of different things. I want to get in a little bit to where you're located for this weekend, but there's been some really interesting, we knew this would be an interesting college football season, 12 team playoff, conference, realignment, but even right here, smack dab in the middle of the season, crazy things going on. And you've been writing a lot about the Pac-12 and all this talk of Mountain West teams moving, AAC teams moving. How crazy is this to be happening mid-season and kind of Pac-12 throwing a bit of a Hail Mary trying to stay alive here? - Yeah, it's like both conferences are like trying to figure out what their real estate looks like when it comes to college athletics in the next 10 years. I mean, because the crazy part is, when the Pac-12 and everybody left inside the Oregon State, Washington State just left them holding a bag. You wondered, okay, is the Pac-12 going to survive this? And there was always the thought that, okay, they're just going to rebrand, restock the refrigerator with teams and keep the Pac-12 name, which they did, by the way, they won a lawsuit, they were able, like the biggest thing out of this team, they won a lawsuit to be able to keep the Pac-12 name, those two schools did. So when that happened, it allowed them to go out and try to find these other teams. And that's what you've seen over the last two weeks. I mean, this stuff that's been, you know, going on behind the scenes for a while now, but they're trying to, you know, the funny part is about all of this. And they're trying to raise, they have rated the Mountain West Conference and then the Mountain West Conference is just trying to keep teams like UNLV and Air Force, which they have. But these two conferences had like a scheduling agreement, like they were helping each other out. And then the Pac-12 was like, no, wait a minute, wait a minute, okay, like they got some teams here, we'll get them on the hook for a year and then we're going to go steal some of them. And that's exactly, that's exactly what has happened. So I mean, you know, God bless the Pac-12, they're staying alive because they're able to poach, you know, some teams from the Mountain West. So it's all, guys, it's all crazy that it's going on like right now during the season. But really, you know, when we get down to it, it comes down to television deals, man. Like you've got to figure out your conferences and how many teams are in it. So you can go approach, you know, CBS or ESPN or Fox and try to work out an agreement. And the last thing is like, you also have to be at eight teams. You have to be at eight teams in a conference to be recognized by the NCAA and the FDA as a full conference. And both of these right now, the Mountain West needs two more teams to be recognized as a full conference and the Pac-12 needs one more. So I would expect it all to be done here in the next probably week and a half. And yeah, we'll move into the future. It's going to be interesting. - Yeah, they're going to get a TV deal with Cartoon Network. This is ridiculous. (laughing) I mean, the CW is not doing it for you, it is. (laughing) - You know, you can watch a little law on order and then you can turn it into... - I mean, you know, don't put a game on top of my matlock with regularly scheduled matlock. So anyway, I want to get, go ahead. - Well, I just want just your professional opinion, looking to the future in maybe five, 10 years we're talking about eight years. - How futile is it for the Pac-12 to try to stay alive? I mean, they may pick up a few hundred million here if they can get some teams scrambled together, put together a conference. But I think most people are thinking down the road. This might be almost like just, you know, 32 great teams that make up a top tier of some sort or maybe it narrows down to two major main conferences. What's the future of conferences here? - I think, you know, you're going to be looking at a lot of group of five schools. And I think what's going to happen, you know, I don't know when, but I would say in the next 10 years, I'm just going to throw like that timeline out that you're going to see group of five conferences. So some belt, AAC, Pac-12, Mountain West, whatever. I can go on big Ease when I get into their own type of potential group of five like playoffs. So let's just say like, I'll just use South Alabama as an example, like in South Alabama, where to win the sum belt conference and get their spot in the college football play office as one of the 12 teams as in at large. I think what you might end up seeing is the group of five hold their own type of play and crown their own, you know, G5 champion, while, you know, you got the big 10, AAC, ACC, Big 12, you know, all working together, you know, going to crown their own title. But the biggest, you know, the biggest thing when you were talking about the future is, you know, I was talking to some folks of the last couple of days, whilst Bellinger actually reported it on Thursday, but this is kind of really what kind of new it was coming. The SEC and the Big 10, they're going to hold a joint, I don't know what you want to call it, I guess a joint conference meetings type of deal in Nashville next month. And they're going to talk, you know, they're going to have all the athletic directors from every school in both conferences in Nashville. They are going to discuss future scheduling models, future post-season models. So, you know how we get like the SEC, ACC, Big 10, whatever challenge, a basketball? - Yeah. - I think that's what we're going to end up getting in the post-season, but we're going to make it more strict. Like I know we get the citrus bowls and the peach bowls and all that stuff, but I do think that they're going to come to an agreement where in the post-season, if you don't make the college football playoff, you're going to see the SEC and Big 10 try to align for the best match-ups and bowl games. So, I think we're headed towards the future where it's going to be very detailing and how the finances are spread out. But also at the end of the day, guys, like we, I think we know where this is headed. If Florida's taking Clemson, you know, decide to stay in the ACC because they don't feel like they can win the lawsuit or they leave the ACC, I think we're really headed towards, you know, something like the NFL model does where you're going to have the AFC NFC and that's just how it's going to roll. - NIL, also a big, a big talking point. - Oh, yeah. - So you have a guy at Las Vegas at UNLV. - Slooker, man. - Slooker, he's played okay. I guess they're still unbeaten. He's leaving because he's saying that they didn't, they didn't, I thought these things were really buttoned up. He's agreeing on saying, I have to know, I have to know, a kid that's involved in one of these things in basketball, but so he had an agreement with them, NIL deal, whatever kind of money. And he says they didn't pay in full or what's the story? This guy's just yanking the story around. - Danny, it's so weird because that happened in Vegas was like, Dan, do you think one town would have enough money to pay a football player to be Las Vegas? - Yeah. - I mean, come on, just go down 'cause you know, get the MGM to sponsor you. But I think what, so, and talking to a number of people over the last three days about this, so it came down to pretty much, I'll give you the flip note, just an assistant coach for UNLV, put together, you know, a deal, so and so. It says, hey, man, look, we're gonna give you 100 gram, you come play here, you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, we'll make it happen, we'll get it set up. This is an assistant coach on the football team. But not really somebody that should be - Pro-organizing deals for players, correct. I mean, that's for a collective to do, not for an assistant coach. So, I mean, once it was short, you know, the kid arrives at campus over the summer from Holy Cross, and he was a great quarterback at Holy Cross, but he gets the campus and he's not receiving any money. He gets a $3,000 stipend for a relocation fee, which by the way, these schools already take care of the relocation, so I don't know why he would get whatever, three grand for that. And then, you know, it all starts. He hires an agent. You know, the agent wants to say, oh, I was hired last February, no, you weren't. You were brought on in the last month and a half in a capacity once he was named the starting quarterback. And it got to a point where they pretty much went to Bariodum, the former head coach in Missouri. I think everybody down the area knows who Bariodum is, but went to Bariodum, that coach, and a couple other folks in the collections, and they know, look, like, we need to renegotiate. Like, we need money. We need our $100,000 that you verbally promise. And here's the problem, is with NIL nowadays, if you're a student athlete, or you're a high school prospect, or you're a transfer, whatever, get it in writing. - Sure. - Let's sign your name to a piece of paper that says, hey, I got proof that you owe me money for coming here and playing football, and the fact that this was some verbal deal. And then what also, I talked to some folks that I didn't UNLV, you know, and got background on this, too, a little bit. It's like, well, you were right here over the summer. Okay, so you didn't complain for the first three months you were on campus. You didn't complain during fall camp about not getting paid, but UNLV gets the three and oh, and the season, and you've got seven touchdowns, and they're ranked in the top 25. Now you want to start bringing it up if you don't have any money. It's like, wait a minute, what? If you had an so-called agreement, why wasn't this handled in the last six months? Why is it being handled right now? So you got a kid that said, true it, I'm done. I'm not gonna play. I think a lot of it, to be honest with you, probably 75% of it was his agent that came up and said, hey, man, look, like the way you're playing the first three games. You know, I'm getting some interest from other schools around the Southeastern Conference, big 10 ACC. Man, I can get you more money, but here's the kicker. You can't go play that fourth game and then burn your red shirt. So if you want to go make more money next year, you've got to stop now. And it put it in a horrible spot, and for the teammates, you know, they're not happy. The school's not happy. And then overall, if they hadn't done that, it just, you got a player that quit on the team. Like, there was a way to figure out the money. Like, I honestly believe like, if they really wanted him, and if UNLV didn't feel like they were kind of getting bent over a barrel in this situation, I think that they would have been like, okay, look, man, we'll pay you some money. We'll give you 100 grand to be our quarterback, cool. But I think we got so far down the road, guys, and when he went to Barry Odom, it did not practice the other day. It went to his office and said, pretty much, you know, it's kind of like holding the gun to that. Like, hey man, look, I want my money or I'm gone. Barry Odom's like, okay, cool man. You know, this way, get out of here. - Hurt feelings though, right. I mean, you know, it's just a stupid way to do it, guys. I think it's the best way to put it. And the agent, by the way, did not help the situation at all. - And he won't be the last player to do that. - I think a players union more and more likely as we move through situations like this. - Well, go ahead. - That's also a thing. I also think the red, you know, folks should really pay attention. And I know they understand what a red shirt is. A red shirt is usually you don't play the coach and the player comes in the green and hey, look, we're gonna switch you out of here. You're gonna get your body ready for college. We're gonna get you, you know, in the weight room, nutrition, get you acclimated to college football. And then you'll have four years to play if you decide to stick around. But what we're seeing now in college football, there was a great example from a Georgia bulldog current USC Trojan Bear Alexander decided after three games, hey man, I'm gonna red shirt this year. I'm not gonna play any longer. Like my stats have gone down. There's no reason for me to play. I'm gonna sit out. I would highly suspect that he is not going to be a USC Trojan after this season was over. But what I'm getting at, we're starting to see players now that are getting smart. This is a smart move by players and say, hey, look, I'm gonna red shirt. I'm not gonna play. I'm not gonna risk getting hurt. And also, by the way, I've got a couple of gains of paint and maybe I can get somewhere else next year. So that is a growing trend, guys, that I think you're going to see over the next week, but some players have bought, some things are bi-weeks. Some players haven't played a lot. So I think over the next week, you're gonna see a lot more players deciding to red shirt this season. - Time we have left with you here, Trey. And we're talking with Trey Wallace. You can follow him on Twitter. He's at outkick.com. Great stuff here, local guy who's making it big. Trey, are you in T-town this weekend? You're gonna catch that game? What are you seeing with Bama in Georgia? - Man, I am excited. I am in, I mean, I've been the Birmingham Uber, Emma Tuscaloosa today here on Friday. As we're talking Friday night, I am in Tuscaloosa, getting ready for tomorrow's game. It's going to be a... Judging by the people that are already here, this place is going to be a mad-out Saturday night. It doesn't help that the former president's gonna be here as well, which is going to make my... - It's gonna take me five hours to get into the stadium tomorrow. - Emma, how does fish fillet be done with him? - Right, yeah, I mean, just leave, please. Don't worry, you're coming through this game. - I know. - This is not a politics thing. This is me trying to do my job and fans trying to enjoy it, whatever. But this is going to be very exciting. I think that fans look at it, and they're like, okay, well, this new playoff, we can catch an L, but still be good when it comes to the season. But that doesn't take away from this game. Georgia, Alabama, this is such a heated rivalry. The Kirby Smart saving days were so fantastic. And now you get Caitlin the Boer with an opportunity to get a statement win, a very, very big signature win in this first four weeks on the job, officially on the sidelines. And then you get from the Georgia standpoint where, yeah, they struggled against Kentucky. But Georgia always has a game like that during the year. A couple of years ago, it was Missouri. Recently, it was the Kentucky match-up, and folks are like, oh, wait a minute. What about this Georgia thing? Well, no, no, the Georgia team's good. The defense is good, the running backs are good. I questioned the secondary a little bit, but from an overall standpoint, I don't think you can get me bigger than this. And I'll probably be saying the same thing if Georgia wins on Saturday, I'd be saying the same thing in a couple of weeks of Georgia and Texas play. But I think just the magnitude and the history between these two teams kind of drives this to a new level. And, you know, Saturday night, 6.30 kickoff, ABC, two teams that we usually see, you know, during the SEC Championship or the playoffs, we're getting them four weeks into the football season. And it's just gonna be a tremendous atmosphere. I am so excited. I do think at the end of the day, this comes down to the, you know, the end of the fourth quarter. You know, maybe a touchdown late from, from either one of these teams. I don't know who I'm gonna go with yet, but I do expect this to be a fantastic football game on both sides of the ball. And the biggest thing for Alabama is the downfield passing, the General Milro, Ryan Williams, biggest thing for Georgia, Carson Beck getting out of the pocket and then being able to establish a run game. So, man, I'm stoked, dude. I'm not getting up at eight o'clock to go watch college game day, but I do look forward to getting there five and a half early hours early, just to be able to get into the stadium thanks to the former president. - Hey, Trey, thanks for your time for the podcast. We appreciate it a lot. We're both very proud of you and happy for your many successes. And just don't be a stranger. - I will not be a stranger, but I look forward to seeing you guys when I get back in town and Danny Boy, I love you, buddy. And I appreciate y'all having me. - You got it, my man. - Thank you, Trey. Well, I have to do this again. Appreciate it, man. - Thank you very much. - Trey Wallace. - Great dude. - Yeah. - Better journalist, believe it or not. - Very good journalist and a very average Little League Baseball player, I remember that. - I think he's already hung up. So great conversations with Paul Finebaum and Trey Wallace there getting us ready for this big weekend of college football and the college football pick 'em challenge with FM Talk 10065 rolls on. Why don't we go through some of our picks here? - Yeah, we can do that. - And it's a pretty, pretty nice weekend. A lot of big spreads. You know, we get some good SEC matchups. Still think some weeks ahead. We'll have some better, closer, more ranked matchups, but let's get into it right here. I'm, you know, a couple of Hail Marys from me. I need to get involved. I need to get back in the mix this week. Start it with Kentucky, 17 and a half point underdogs. They are at number six Ole Miss this weekend. Who you got there, Dan? - I got Kentucky keeping it within like a couple of touchdowns. Ole Miss to the win, Kentucky to cover. - Yeah, I went with Kentucky as well. I guess they, I think they got a week off between that Georgia close game. - They might have. - If they played anybody last week, it wasn't really anyone in any consequence. - Yeah. - 17 and a half with that defense just seems like a pretty big spread. I want Kentucky as well. - That's all I thought. A&M, three and a half point favorites over Arkansas. So this game in college station, A&M ranked 24th right now. - Yeah, A&M, I'm going to go with them, the home team. They've got the big stadium in Arkansas. You know, they hung around, but they didn't play that great either at Auburn. - Yeah, I'm right there with you. I went A&M as well. And I think in his Elko moves further and further into the season, he's going to get this team looking more and more like a contender. - That's a good point. - Auburn is home for the last week in a long time. And it's Oklahoma's first road SEC game. And the Sooners, while ranked number 21, they're only two and a half point favorites over Auburn. - They're playing a freshman quarterback that got his feet wet last week. Auburn's at home again. The quarterback play can't be worse than last week, right? So I'm going to go with Auburn. - I went Auburn too. I think my main reason was, I think Oklahoma's beat to hell right now. After that Tennessee game. - That's true too. - And you mentioned the freshman quarterback. So so far, we're on the same side. - Freshman quarterback on the road at Jordan Hare, that's not easy. - What's that line? I thought that Oklahoma will be favored by much more than two and a half points. It tells me Vegas knows something there. Oklahoma State is the underdog in a top 25 matchup at Kansas State. Oklahoma State ranked 20th, Kansas State ranked 23rd. Wildcat's favored by five and a half points. - Kansas State get the heck beat out of them by Brigham Young last week? - I think they did. - So I got Kansas State with a bounce back. - And Oklahoma State had a weird game too. - A tough game, if I remember correctly. I went Kansas State. So we're on the same side so far. - Okay. - Four for four. How about Penn State, Happy Valley at home ranked ninth and 17 and a half point favorites over number 19 Illinois. - My guess is that's too many points. Illinois is unbeaten. They beat Nebraska at Nebraska last time out. So I'm going with Illinois to at least cover. - Yeah, and they got an extra day, I believe too. I think it was a Friday night game. Penn State always screws me. I spent some time up there. I have a lot of family there that goes to the games. I'm going with the Nittany Lions. So we've separated there. Number one Texas, Arch Manning at quarterback, 38 and a half point favorites over Mississippi State. - If Mississippi State loses by like 40 points, they got to get out of the league. - Ow. - You can't play that poorly in a league play. So I'm just thinking Mississippi State will keep it with the they'll cover. - You think Billy Napier sent a thank you card to Mississippi State after their performance this last weekend? - He should have. - I mean, well that just saved him another week, right? - So you picked the Bulldogs to cover? - Yep. - I went Texas minus 38 and a half because Mississippi State stinks. Our guy Riley Leonard needs to not turn the ball over this weekend. Number 16 Notre Dame at home. Five and a half point favorites over number 15 Louisville. - They're going to cover. They've got a really good defense. They're going to cover. Riley will get it together and do what he does best, which is running. - I'm so worried about the turnovers, about the offense. I've got the Cardinals keeping it within five and a half. Number three Ohio State on the road. A big 10 game at Michigan State and the Buckeyes are favored by 24 and a half points. - Michigan State feels well, they got a new coach in there now, but they really have got a lot of rebuilding to do. They just don't have nearly the players they had, maybe five, 10 years ago. I'm going with Ohio State to cover. - I took Michigan State, so we're on the opposite side once again there. They put these numbers. I mean 24 and a half. - It's a lot of points. - It's a lot of points. All it takes is a couple of things to go wrong. - On the road. - And they're out of the number there. The biggest game of the weekend, of course, no doubt. Number four Alabama at home, number two Georgia away, and they've made the Bulldogs, at least in run your pool, one and a half point favorites. - Yeah, keep Brian Williams under wraps and you got a pretty good chance to win the game. So I'm hoping fingers crossed Georgia can do that and I've got them covering one and a half. - They'll cover one and a half and they'll win the game. - Yeah, that's basically a pick them. I mean, it could be a one point game, but you think it's low scoring? What are you thinking? - Look, man, don't pressure me. That's my team there. So maybe more low twenties maybe. - Okay, I went Bama, home, it's gonna be rockin'. Trump is there. By the way, if Trump really wants to win Georgia. - That's right. - He's got Bama, he's gonna win Alabama. - He's got to have a Georgia pennant and a pom-pom. He needs, that's the swing state there. Bama's in a lock. - Throw on the dog's jersey and start roofing at the camera and win that state, it's that easy. And then a game I know we're both fired. - I really want to see that, roof, roof. - Roof, I know a game we're both fired up about right now. Things might look differently around 7.15 PM Saturday night. Our own South Alabama jags, road game in Baton Rouge. The LSU Tigers favored by 21 and a half over our jags. - I was just so blown away by what they did on the road at App State. App State is the Baton Rouge of the Sun Belt, right? I mean, it's a tough place to play. Now it's not Baton Rouge and it's not LSU, but LSU's been so uneven this year. And so I'm picking South to cover that spray. - And that was a Thursday night game. So a couple things, you're right, the crowd was rockin' at App State for a time. But it's almost like a mini bi-week. I get a couple extra days, but it worked when I picked against the jags last week. And I'm so worried about that secondary still. I went ahead and took LSU minus 21 and a half, but don't let that fool you. I want the jags to pull off this upset. That would be something else. - I'd love it. - All right, so after the first four, I think we ended up on opposite sides of just about everything else. Should be a great weekend of games.
