(upbeat music) - Welcome to the ASHP official podcast, your guide to issues related to medication use, public health, and the profession of pharmacy. - Hello, thanks for joining us today on ASHP official. In anticipation of the 2024 Conference for Pharmacy Leaders, ASHP is hosting a series of podcast episodes focused on highlighting key sessions, hot topics, and can't miss moments of the meeting. I'm Cynthia Von Haringen, Senior Education Director on the National Meetings Team at ASHP. And today we're sitting down with Bill Kernan, Director of Pharmacy Services at Orlando Health, in Adriana Sultera, HR Director Supporting Pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic. We're going to discuss their upcoming session entitled, Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, Navigating Toward a Culture of Safety. Hi Bill, hi Adriana, nice to see you both today. - Hi Cynthia. - Hello. - Thanks for agreeing to tackle this topic on the national stage. We're really looking forward to your combined perspectives as a pharmacy leader and an HR professional to really address this from several angles. So let's get started. As you know, the schedule at the leaders conference offers several breakout sessions during each of the two instructional blocks. Let's start with Bill and the first question is, why should attendees choose your session at the conference? - Yeah, well thank you Cindy. I think it's really important that as pharmacy leaders, we have an obligation to be able to create a safe environment for our team members. And this has really come to light over the last several years as being really a very significant issue within pharmacy. There have been some very bold and very courageous individuals who have come forward to make it known that sexual harassment is a very significant issue within pharmacy. So as pharmacy leaders, it all starts with leadership. We really have an obligation to be able to set the table correctly and create that good, safe environment for our staff or our team members, our pharmacists, our technicians, all of our pharmacy team members. In fact, one of the number one reasons why sexual harassment cases don't actually get reported is that the victim feels like nothing will be done, nothing will happen from it. So they go ahead and they try to take care of it themselves. Well, as leaders, that really falls on us. We've got to be able to change that culture, change that environment to be able to allow them to report. So we hope that this session will give all of those who attend the skills to be able to do just that. - Terrific, thank you so much. Adriana, what do you have to add from the HR perspective? - Yeah, no, absolutely. I think it's crucial for pharmacy leaders to understand how to create and maintain that safe and respectful work environment. And as Bill mentioned, this training, our goal is to equip our leaders to have the knowledge and the skills to identify how to prevent and address sexual harassment both effectively and also efficiently as well. By attending our session, the leaders are gonna learn how to foster a culture of safety, support their team members and also ensure that they're compliant with legal and organizational policies as well. Sexual harassment training is very important because it not only protects employees, but it enhances the overall reputation and productivity of your pharmacy department. We really hope you can join our session. - Great, it is such a delicate topic yet knowledge and strategies in this area are essential. So one more thing, Adriana, without giving too much away, what will the attendees do during the session to help us achieve the learning objectives that we have set up for this program? - Yeah, we've developed a couple case studies. Unfortunately, some of them from past experiences, right? Where the names and situations have changed a little bit, but we really wanted to create case studies that were applicable to the pharmacy world. And I think we did a great job developing those studies and we're looking forward to talking through those extremely complex and sensitive scenarios. - Terrific, I think the act of learning is really a very, very good way to check your understanding of such information and then put it into action and see what and how can I really take care of this as a leader. So thanks for that. Now let's move on to our second question and we'll start again with you, Bill. What are you looking forward to at the conference beyond, of course, your own session participation as faculty? - Yeah, so ASHB Leaders Conference is, I mean, so it's a great conference. It's the one conference that we have where you know that all of the key health system pharmacy leaders are in one place. So the content is phenomenal. As leaders, we have to stay up to date in all things healthcare, all things pharmacy. And this is really the place to be able to get that content. The slate of education is very impressive. So whether it's the latest technology, artificial intelligence, revenue generation, cost savings, advocacy, leadership-related issues that we all deal with, there's content for everybody to be able to get to across the entire spectrum. It's also a great conference to be able to build your network and build relationships with others. Again, across the country, you don't have too many opportunities to meet with everybody across the country. And so each time that I have gone, I've always met, gosh, probably four, five, six, new people that I didn't meet before. And so it's great to be able to build that network. And you know, as you meet with them, you realize that we all have a lot of the same problems, a lot of the same challenges. So it's great to be able to bounce ideas off of bounce, you know, try to find best practices of what people are doing. And so it's a great way to be able to network. And then lastly, there are a lot of HSPA residents that will be there who are going to be graduating. So if you're looking for a young aspiring leader, this is a great place to be able to connect with them and you might be able to ultimately fill, you know, maybe you've got a frontline manager position that you want to fill. This is a great place to be kind of recruiting for those positions. So all around, just a great conference. I agree, you certainly have a bountiful number of like-minded and engaged colleagues all in one place at the Leaders Conference. So it's great for socializing, catching up with old friends, and as you said, recruiting. We're sure that's wonderful. Adriana, how about you? What are you looking forward to at the conference? - Yeah, so this will actually be my first ASHP conference. So I'm very excited just to, you know, see the entire conference. I've heard many good things about it as well. And all of the conferences and the sessions, they look extremely fascinating. And really just looking forward again to meeting individuals and networking and discussing ideas on what's working well. What are some things that we could possibly implement as well? So just, you know, strategizing and getting to know other pharmacy leaders. - Thanks. I really hope you both enjoy all the conference has to offer. So that is all the time we have today. I want to thank Adriana and Bill for joining us to discuss sexual harassment in the workplace, navigating toward a culture of safety.
