Hello, and welcome to the Movie Podcast. My name is Shabazz, and joining alongside me here in the iceberg lounge, kind of chilly, kind of cold. He's not a penguin, but he is a flightless bird. Daniel, how are you doing today? I'm doing good, man. Honestly, I'm so happy to be back in the world of the Batman. This is the movie that I don't think I've stopped thinking about. You know I haven't stopped talking about, so it's nice to be in this world where I could talk about this every single week with you guys and just get lost. And not just that, though, Shay, talk to some really cool people from the show. I agree, dude, and you're right, we aren't talking to some really awesome people from the show, specifically one today that we're going to get into. But before we do that, this is the movie podcast. You're going right to the mean of the potatoes, right? Well, this is, if anything, this is more like the lettuce. This is the appetizer. Yeah, the mean potatoes would be the episode. That you're right. You're right. You know what? From play to end, it's all mean potatoes with us. It's true. It's just all carbs. It's all carbs. Yeah. Oh, it's all filler, then, it's all protein. Oh, right. We're good. We're just a bad man's side, by the way. We're talking about it all. It all comes together. It's just 400 push-ups a day. That's all it is. No. That's the start of the day. That's the start of the day. Exactly. We're the movie podcast. If you couldn't tell by how much fun we're having already, we're having a lot of fun here. And you can have more fun with us by joining our Discord because the links for that are down below. We're going to have a chat open for the penguin. The penguin is coming alongside Agatha all along this week. So why don't you just talk about them both in our chat? Yeah. But we'll have different rooms for them. A lot of different rooms for them. But yeah, what a week though for comic book fans. And I think that's what's so special. And this is the type of thing that we need in a genre that could be so filled with the carbs, as we said earlier. It's really cool to have two very different shows that are taking their larger universes in very different directions. And that's what's special and that's what's so unique with both of these shows. But specifically for the penguin, we're really going into the crime, the underbelly, something that we saw in the bad man, and now we're really getting deeper into this world of mobsters and villains. It's really cool. Getting to know the Gotham that we've always kind of heard about in the comics. Definitely. But not getting it really fleshed out. And if you weren't already aware, we have a podcast because you listen to it right now. We'll also have a YouTube channel. There you have a lot of different social media outlets. And those links are available down below for that as well. In those links, if you go to one of those links that are there, you'll be linked. Oh my gosh. A lot of linking here. A lot of linking to our review of the painting. There you go. Which is out. And of course you can listen to us there and understand what we thought of the show. Yeah. And you know, earlier in this episode, I know it feels like so long ago since we started. It does. You know, I said, you know, talking to people from the show, maybe there are more people coming. What? Maybe we were alluding to more people who worked on the show. Oh my gosh. That will be joining us on the movie podcast. I don't believe you. In the coming weeks. I don't believe you. I think you should say too. I, oh, I want to send Batman to your house. No, please. I want the bad things. I want the bad signal above your house. It will crash right through that. It's pretty obvious. Robert Patton said I'd love to meet you. Yeah. But stay tuned is all we're going to say in the coming weeks, lots of cool stuff coming. Would you want to live and got them? No, no, definitely not. Definitely not. Definitely not. Do sure. I just like do this all flooded right now, by the way, I don't want to take a boat to work. I'd move to Italy. You know what I mean? Like, by the boom. Hey, speaking of Italians, yeah, anyway, all came together. We are talking with someone who we have admired for so long, and who was the highlight of our reviews. And that is the lovely Kristin Miladi, who is joining us today, who plays Sophia Falcone, who honestly, like, I just want now another show of just the bird, if that's okay, even though she's in this show a lot. Yeah. You just want more of her. Listen, Kristin Miladi came into the series and was like, listen, Colin Farrell. I know you were incredible. Listen, I know you were incredible in the Batman, and you're incredible in this show, but I'm going to match your freak. Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? And I'm going to be here to steal this show from you because she is so good in it. And they are so good together. They're so fun to watch. Sophia Falcone is a character that you're going to fall in love with. You're going to cry for her. You're going to cheer her on. But most of all, you're going to be in awe of Kristin Miladi's performance throughout all of the penguin because she steals the whole damn thing. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She runs away with it, absolutely. And we had such a fun conversation. We talked about a lot of things, obviously, with the show, but also where we loved her the most was in Palm Springs, a movie that you and I are just so emphatic about all the time. We are. You know, that movie, as you know, came out in 2020, that was a year. That happens. That was a year. And you go to movies that are feel good, movies that I could return to, you know, problem. And you know, it's Palm Springs and that's an all-timer. That is a movie that everybody should watch. If you have not watched. If you haven't watched it already, please do yourself a favor. And after this episode, go to your prime video and watch it there because it's available. Or on Hulu. Or on Hulu. In the States. I forgot about that. But, you know, those are other streaming services. We don't talk about those today. We don't talk about those today. Warner Brothers and HBO. There you go. And Crave. And Crave here in Canada. The Penguin will be available to stream exclusively here in Canada on Crave September 19th at 9 p.m. And then guess what? They're going to move it over to the HBO classic Sundays at 9 starting September 29th. Which I love. I love that idea. This shows deserving of that Sunday night spot, 100% Oh, yeah. It's going to be popular. It's going to be big and it's going to be the best, but even bigger than that will probably be this interview with Kristen. Definitely. So let's not take up too much of your time. Let's go get over to us talking to Chris. Hi, Chris. And how are you? I'm good. How are you? We are doing so well. We are so honored to be talking with you today. We're such big fans of yours and you're so incredible in the show. You're absolutely just a force in this. So congratulations on it. Thank you so much. That's very sweet of you. Thank you. Absolutely. And before we even kind of touch on the Penguin, I think we need to first address the fact that Palm Springs is one of our favorite movies of all time. You watch it almost every day, I think, at this point. I feel like we want to be loved and then we don't. This week alone, we watched it three times. We're living in the loop. Yes. We want to be a legend. Thank you so much. I mean, that means so much to me. That's one of my favorite things I've ever gotten to do. And that movie really holds like a very, very precious space in my heart. So I like love when I meet people who are, I love it as much as I do. I love that movie too. Good. We're so glad. We're so happy to hear that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's, you know, it was, it's, I'm like so honored to have been a part of something like that. You know, that's the type of movie that I grew up watching. Yeah. You're unique. Yeah, I know. It's in our letter box top four. So yeah, that's a bad. Oh, I love that. I love that. That's very meaningful to me. Thank you. Of course. Thank you. Christina, just switching back over to the Penguin, you know, how does it feel for you? This is, this has been a project that has been in the works for a while. Obviously, we're huge fans of what Matt did with the band in 2022. How does it feel to now have the world meets Sophia? I mean, in this moment, I'm like so excited, but also absolutely crippled with nerves because I think when you really care about something and I really care about this show and I really care about this character, you just want people to also care in a good way. And like, you know, so I'm excited, but I'm also like, nervous, of course. Yeah. I think they're intrigued every single week with this one. Oh, yeah. Thank you. It's incredible to see just the arc that your character goes through in the show. Yeah. Yeah. It's going to be fun to talk about every week. Oh, thank you. Yeah. It was, I feel very blown away by the fact that I think that's also like one of the positive, more positive aspects of a limited series too, is that we get time to show that arc. I mean, I got to play so many different things and sit with her for so long. It was like a dream. Yeah. You're going to be getting your flowers, episode four, come around. Like, people are going to be just, the internet is going to go on fire with that episode. So, yeah. Thanks. Yeah. You have to talk about like... It's an early episode. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Very cool. Very cool episode. Thank you. I think it's very cool too. Yeah. What was that? What was that first kind of meeting like then when you met with Matt and Lauren to kind of talk about this character? What did you guys discuss and what was making you really fall in love with her? I'm a huge Batman fan. Like, I've wanted to be in this universe since I was a kid. It's like the... It's the of the superhero worlds of the comic book, but like this is the one I have always like just put right in my veins. And so they reached out and they said they're doing this series about the penguin and there's a role in it and they want to talk to you, but they're being really secretive about what it is. And so they just want to zoom with you. And so they sent me the script for the first episode, which, you know, there's a lot in that episode about her that leaves a lot of questions, even though it's like such a cool way to introduce her. And so then I just was given that and nothing else. And then I had this like two hour zoom with Matt and Lauren and Craig Zobel and I talked to him about why I love Batman so much and why I love the movie and why like, you know, my little thoughts were about her and my little like instincts. And then I thought it went so well and then I didn't hear anything for weeks. And I was like, well, damn, this was like, okay, I must have... And I was so sad because I was like, wow, that was so, like that was exactly the type of thing that I... like they told me little things in that meeting that got me really excited. And yeah, so I was really, really sad. And I think like four weeks passed by like a pretty significant amount of time where I was like, okay, they obviously went to like, you know, someone else. And then they called and asked if I would, they were like, can you come in in two days and test with Colin? And so they flew me to LA and I tested with Colin and it was so nerve wracking. And then a couple of days later, I got the call and I, you know, just freaked out. I was just like myself. So it was like, it was a pretty... actually like in retrospect, smooth process, but not without it's like, I had an emotional rollercoaster for sure. Yeah, of course. But not waiting especially, right? Oh my God. Yeah. Yeah. There was circling Meryl Streep for the role probably. That's right. Yeah. Exactly. They were checking the veils left and right. When you need meal time inspiration, it's worth shopping Kroger for thousands of appetizing ingredients that inspire countless mouth-watering meals. And no matter what tasty choice you make, you'll enjoy our everyday low prices plus extra ways to save like digital coupons worth over $600 each week and up to $1 off per gallon at the pump with points so you can get big flavors and big savings. Kroger fresh for everyone. How did you feel that when you walked out of the Batman, when you first got to see that movie, like, what was because you are a big Batman fan, how did you feel about that experience? Oh, I loved it. I mean, I thought something Matt did so beautifully and I've always loved this about Batman. I think this is also one of the other things I really like about that universe is I think there's like such a fine line between Batman and his villains and you're... and I thought he really blurred that even more. You know, you're watching Robert Pattinson who I thought was so brilliant. Like alone in a cave, listening to like Nirvana and he has this makeup on and you're like, oh, this person's possessed. He's completely possessed by this need for justice. And then you see like, you know, you see Zoey's Catwoman is completely possessed. Like everyone's possessed. It's like this, it's this hall obviously too. You're just like, oh, this is what unites them. This is why it's sort of interchangeable. And like obviously we root for the type of justice that Batman is fighting for, but everyone is out there trying to write a wrong, a perceived wrong. And so like, I thought that was so well done in that movie where they were all sort of kindred. Like everyone was at home making their own costume, going out to the night to like just wreck stuff and try to try and feel something. And you know, obviously Colin is like so brilliant in that movie. That car chase scene is like one of my favorite car chases in recent. I mean, I don't know if you can call it a car chase sequence. Yeah. Anyway, I remember being on the edge of my seat and also like Batman's entrance when he enters into the subway and you're like, that's what's going to happen. Yeah. It's I just left it. You're just us love them. They're like, let's just all watch. Do we pause? You just put her on? Like that's where we're now. Yeah. It's special. The sequence of Peter Sarsgard in the church, like there was just there was so much where because I think another thing I really love about it is that I love that no one has super powers. So it's always felt somewhat real, even though it's like heightened. And I also like really love that it's like a little campy sometimes like it's it's you're it's like feasible almost. Yeah. Even though it's like dialed up to an 11 out of 10, whereas in other superhero universes, it's still you still go for that ride, but you're like, Oh, I don't know what it's like to like zap a thing with my eyes, and this feels like that scene with that with the bomb around his neck like that felt so it's also so real. Yeah. I loved it. We were we were lucky to talk to Peter about that scene a couple of months ago and he's just like, yeah, like that was like one of the craziest nights ever working on something like that. I bet. I mean, you even looking at, you know, Colin in that film and when he makes his entrance, I just love to know like when you were doing that screen test with Colin, was he in full makeup? Like what was your reaction? See him? No, he wasn't. No, he wasn't. Not for that screen test. He was very surreal as well. You know, we're like, um, yeah, that was a wild day. I was so nervous. Oh my God, like absolutely shaking. Do you remember your reaction when you finally got to see him on said in full makeup? Like what was that reaction? Like for you. Yes. That thankfully was not when cameras were rolling. That was not a day of camera tests for like different hair and makeup and wardrobe and all that stuff. And I, um, they like brought me to set and I saw him like I saw him far away in front of the camera and I was blown away because I think the day before I'd been we'd had like a rehearsal where it was like just us in person like talking and blah, blah, blah and like, um, it's incredible. It's incredible. Up close. Yeah. It's so real. It's so and it feels really, you know, in that first episode, I give him that sort of like Corleone kiss on the cheek and he, um, it feels real. Like it's, it's, it's so good. It's incredible work that Mike Marino and his team do for that. What was it like working with Colin to figure out what their relationship was going to be like in the show? Because you, you really are incredible together in the show. It's amazing to see that just as soon as you say that first introduction, I'm like, I know so much about your history without having seen it. Yeah. Oh, thank you. I love to hear that. Um, I mean, you know, he's an extraordinary actor and he's an extraordinary person and he's game. And I think that that, you know, he was so, we didn't do too much talking. We talked a little bit about, you know, maybe things we'd shared or, or, and we had, um, the fourth episode as our guide to about like specifically what their dynamic had been, but we kind of just dove in together and, you know, he just was such an incredible partner to have because he'll, he'll try anything. He's so egoless. He's like, he also loves it so much. Like we both loved it so much. And that's so special when you're on the same page there because then you can just really like take it super, super far and feel comfortable to try anything. And yeah, it was, it was great. I, I'm so grateful that I've gotten to work with him and know him because he's, he's very special. We love also the look of Sophia in the show as well. Like she has such a swagger to her and it's like, you're kind of always on your toes and your around her. And then again, when we get to episode four and we get to find out more about her, what is it like kind of creating and how much input did you have and like how she was going to look, what her mannerisms were of her ticks, like how much did you kind of develop that on your own? We had, we were all very in locks up together. So our fabulous hair and makeup team, our wardrobe designer Helen, we felt very like, I came in with certain ideas about her hair, like wanting to be something very feral, but that could be put up around her family, but something that felt like animal a little bit. And then, you know, with her makeup, that obviously goes on a real journey and became about like what, what is like the war paint this woman would put on. And this is the world she's from, she's from a world where like the women can only express themselves through their makeup and their hair and their clothes. And that's like what they're expected to be concerned with and nothing else. And so you're like, how does someone who goes through what she goes through with the tools that she was given growing up? Like how does that morph? And so we were all really on the same page and especially like the wardrobe, you know, showing like little peaks here and there. And then as she becomes like more and more free and as she like steps into this version of herself, like how balls to the wall can you go with her clothes while also being like fabulous and like who how this person would become a villain and how she said like what her armor is. And I mean, you know, I was obsessed with it. I felt very, it was a big collaboration and I was so excited that they were so open to that too. Like it felt like a constant conversation. Like the eyeliner that she wears in for right before she like absolutely burns it all down. I was like, I wanted something that looked like, you know, like war paint or like something that she would use as like a, almost like camouflage or something that like would also like really let like that made a sense of occasion out of that dinner. And so I'm in that idea for, you know, whatever that crazy eye makeup that she's wearing. And you know, we all just really, yeah, we all built upon each other and it was a it was a great team and we were very much on the same page about all of it, which was great. That's amazing. And I mean, you're living in a world where people are dressing up. I think you have to act accordingly too. Yeah. I'd love to know just for yourself, I know music's a big, you know, a big part of your life. Yeah. Your body, very cover, phenomenal, by the way. Thank you. Thank you. We'd love to know. Oh, of course. We're full of compliments today. We're Canadian. We're super nice. I'm just, I'm just curious for yourself. Like, were you ever like creating playlists of music for your process for this? Like, what does Sophia's world of music sound like that was helping you get into this character? There was, it was very Rosalia and SZA heavy. Oh. That's awesome. And then some Lana Del Rey in there as well. But it was like a lot of Rosalia and SZA. That's wicked. That's awesome. You'll have to drop the playlist afterwards. Yeah. So we all get to get an online set. Yeah. And it really like gets you there. Thank you so much, Kristen. This has been a blast talking to you in this show. Thank you so much. What a pleasure. Honestly. Yeah, we can't wait to talk to you again. And we really hope that we can just maybe sit down and just talk all about Palm Springs one day as well. Yeah. Love it. But love it. Thank you so much. OK. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. the next time. Bye. Bye. Bye. (upbeat music) [BLANK_AUDIO]
