[MUSIC] Hello and welcome to the Movie Podcast. My name is Daniel. I am one of your hosts today, and joining alongside me in the Coven is my fellow witch. Hello, Shabes. Well, hello. I don't know. I was part of the witch coven. Well, you should have known this is the movie podcast. This is true. This is true. We are always very spooky. [LAUGHTER] I didn't like it. You didn't like the laugh? It was a good laugh, though. It wasn't like, but maybe we should let the witches do it. Yeah, I mean, we're honorary witches. I'd love to be witch. You would love to be a witch or a wizard. What's the difference? I mean, witch, witch is witch. Am I right? Witch is a sandwich. Hope. [LAUGHTER] Shab a question for you around the game. Out of the game. I need to-- I'm off the broom, sorry. I'll throw it off the broom. Off the Nimbus 2000. I need to ask you. Yeah. If we had to create a task for someone to join the movie podcast, what would they have to do to-- in order to join our ranks in the movie podcast coven? Like one of the trials, right? Yes. One of the trials. What would that trial-- what would that task be? I think spending an hour at Anthony. Oh, yeah. You know, like trying your best to maybe get a couple of paragraphs out of it. A pair of paragraphs? Yeah. Oh, no one's ever known joining her. No, no one's joining her coming. No one's joining. No one's joining this. Oh, my gosh. Yeah, I feel like that's a good one. Yeah. You know, that's a solid one. What would you say? What would I say, like, to have to join the coven? Yeah, like what's your trial? Ah, man. You know, like just like eat like a-- Oh, what do you fear factor? No, what is this? Eat like a lizard. [LAUGHTER] And I was like, yeah, you have to eat like a jar of mustard. Oh. And then, you know-- We're going to have a lot of you joining our coven. Not-- you think a lot of people would do it? I mean, jar of mustard isn't too bad. It's not too bad. It's not great. It's not great. OK. Fine. You have to talk to Anthony. Oh, talk to me. You just have to talk to Anthony. Poor Anthony. Good thing he doesn't listen. Good thing he doesn't listen. Good thing he doesn't exist. Yeah. He's just a figment of the imagination. He's the biggest witch. No, Anthony. Who are you guys in the room? We couldn't do it without you. We love you. Today on the movie podcast, we are absolutely delighted to be joined by an incredible coven of special guests. Let me tell you, these interviews took place in two different countries and two different time zones in-- By two different people. By two different people. Yeah. In two different stages of their life. Exactly, right? I almost sound like we're in September or that. No, we were all in August. It was all in August. Today on the movie podcast, we are delighted to welcome the cast of Agatha all along. Say, please tell us who you had the privilege and honor of sitting down with. I had the honor and privilege of speaking with the lovely, the incredibly talented, the wickedly talented-- [LAUGHTER] Catherine Han. Wow. Catherine Hanan. No, no. [LAUGHTER] That's so pretty close. That's so pretty close. That's so pretty close. Catherine Hanan. Yes. On the movie podcast, someone who we absolutely have adored forever. For so long. And I was able to tell-- because she asked. She's like, have you met before? And I was like, Catherine, I've got a story for you here. Oh, my gosh. You just settled down. Yeah. I am pretty settled. Back in 2019 at TIFF, Daniel and I were standing in a special space, like just a location instead of TIFF. And someone came up to us and was like, please, move out of the way. Catherine Han is coming. And we're like, Catherine Han is coming. And we're like, who are we going to move out of the way? And we did. And she's like, oh my god, was that me that said it to you? We're like, no, no, if you did, Catherine, you would have evaporated right away after you said that. Yeah, 100% we would have just turned to Ash right there. Dust just poof. We are, you know, Thanos snapped away. Yeah. Also joining us also who we got to do in person. All these interviews were in person, by the way. Isn't that crazy? Which is so nice because it doesn't happen too often, especially with the amount of people that we have on today. Joe Locke joining us. An absolute sweetheart. Joe Poppenlock. Joe Poppenlock. You calling that by the way? I did not call him that. He's an absolute heartstopper, though. Oh, wait. A little tease for you. We do talk about season three, just a little bit. You'll see. But Joe, what a delightful person. So fun, just so passionate and so excited to be joining us Marvel worlds. We spoke about everything from Marvel characters that he'd want to see join his come into, you know, what are his traditions for the spooky season. I promise you, it will shock you because it shocked me. And I'm very excited for you to see all of these interviews. I also had the privilege of speaking with Jack Shafer, who is a creator of WandaVision and Agathol along and a writer and just absolutely brilliant at what she does. It was great that she got to come to Toronto as well, too. And then going back to D23, almost, you know, over a month ago now, we had the privilege of sitting down with Zashir as a mata, Ali on, and Deborah, Joe, Rapu, again, all legends in their own regard. We were so lucky to do that at D23. So we've been sitting on these interviews for a little while and we're so happy to finally be releasing them. Because Agathol all along is debuting on Disney+ September 18th. Just in time for the spooky season, you'll have two episodes to start you off. With new episodes weekly, you do not want to miss it. We'll have our full review out later this week that you'll be able to check out spoiler free. But yes, you do not want to miss this series September 18th. I want to say a huge thank you to our friends at Disney Studios in Canada for inviting us to do these interviews. If you like what we're doing here on the movie podcast and you want to see more, make sure you follow us on Instagram, X, TikTok, Letterbox, wherever you are, the movie podcast is there. You'll be able to see video versions of everything that we're doing on YouTube of this, these very interviews. Go check them out on YouTube on TikTok and Instagram, wherever you are. We have lots of great footage there for you to see our lovely faces and, of course, the faces of our special guests. We'll have a Discord channel open up so we could talk all about Agatha all along. You do not want to miss it. We'll be giving all of our theories and everything in there. So even though episodes in the movie podcast may end, the conversation does not have to stop. But without further ado, please welcome the incredible cast of Agatha all along to the movie podcast. - That's good to see you. - Awesome, God, thank you so much for taking your time with us today. - Of course. - This show is phenomenal, I wish it was already fall, so we could bring it again. - Ah, I know, it feels like fall here. - Yeah, I know, welcome to Toronto, right? - God, best weather. - Yeah, thank you for saying that. - Yeah. - Congrats also on your performance at D23. My co-hosts were there and they said you were crushing it, so. - It's real fun. - Yeah. - Yeah, that was a real fun song to sing with those people. - Oh, yeah, saw the clips. - Fantastic. - Good, it was fun. - It's been three years now, how do you think, I mean, how do you think Agatha's feeling about Wanda? - Ooh, that's a good question. I think Agatha is pissed. - Yeah, rightfully so. - Yeah, for sure. - Yeah, definitely. You also have the best cackle in the business right now. - Oh. - Yeah. - Thank you, I do love a cackle. - Yeah, how did it take to find that? And what was the preparation like for it? - You gotta just let it rip, can't think about it. And it's gotta be a good combo of really finding something funny and also being mad at the same time, The Rage. - That's an interesting combo, funny and angry. - Rage and hilarity. - Love that, love that so much. Something that we love that Marvel does really well is the costumes, there's so much attention to detail putting them and what we love so much in WandaVision and carried over into Agatha was the amount of costumes that you change into and all the different looks that you kind of have. What was the process of creating those that you have any input? - I feel so forever blessed being able to work with Daniel Sellen who did all, he assisted the costumes for WandaVision and then he designed all of Agatha. He is so, his mind is so beautiful and he is so collaborative that he really helped all of us define our looks and he, he actually the tailor that he had for my clothing, I think worked with Lucille Ball, came out of retirement to do this, these clothes. My road which outfit the long purple dress, she had buried these little ruins, these Celtic ruins throughout the silk lining of it as protection. - I mean, I have goosebumps thinking about it, it was just every time I got to put it on, just felt like you just felt the surge of power and did that for every witch. Had her own protection, some sort of signifier that was for her character or his character and it's such a huge part of that added 'cause it's not like domestic, there's something of course like really heightened about it and so, it really adds to the everything are those costumes. Yeah, it was such, if my arc fittings were so fun, we would just put on music and just like, try on the coolest clothes ever and just find these humans that were like somehow based on these creatures, somehow based on the comics but then like, and then also with Jack's writing, which is like found this awesome middle ground. - That's awesome, and even the ones that you had like through the different eras and that from like, I'm assuming the naughty pants are from home that you probably brought over. - Oh sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. Majusika tours with the naughty, yeah, for sure. - Those are great, yeah, Michael. - They weren't in it enough. - No, they weren't, you're right. You would need to spin off series for some time. - There was some, I liked it though. It was just, you know, leave 'em wanting more. - Leave 'em wanting more, I think so. - Another Disney+ series on the way, absolutely. - Yes, called leave 'em wanting more. - Leave 'em wanting more. - Okay, great. - The naughty pants story. - Great. - Yeah, that's all we need. What was also really cool is you had all these different titles that came out for this show. We had a House of Harkness, Covenant of Chaos, Dark Hold Diaries. My personal favorite was The Lion Witch with Great Wardrobe. - The Great Wardrobe, yeah, I love it. - What is there one that you had that you just loved? - I think that was it. - That one? - Yeah, yeah. And I also loved Covenant of Chaos. - That was a cool one. - I love that one too. - Yeah, very cool one. If you had the opportunity to kind of create your own covenant and you could pick any famous TV or movie witches to kind of have in them, who would you have? - Mm, I would love Elvira. - Okay. - I would love, I can't remember her name, but the bewitched mom and bewitched. - Yes, I can remember her name either, yeah. - Of course, Margaret Hamilton. My daughter is a little bit of a young witch, I think. - Cool. - She would be amazing in there. And, oh my gosh, there are so many. Anyone in my coven, I feel like, would be-- - Blair Witch, maybe, you know? - The Blair Witch. - The Blair Witch, why not? - Right, who we've never really seen. - Have we seen? - Yeah, she's a bit of a famous witch, I guess, right? - Yes. - You know, keeps it under the radar. - Yes. - How I see her, you don't ever see her. - You never see her. - Yeah. - That could be interesting. - Yeah. - Legit, scary. - Yeah. - That's a good roster. - Yeah, I think so too. - Of which you see, you kind of got it. I love that. - Or the witch. - The witch. - On your sailor. - Oh yeah, Hermione, if you want to go a little family friendly too. - Yes. - Yeah, why not? - Mm-hmm. - Love that. - And if you then had the opportunity to kind of create your own witch trials, and you had to make people kind of go through them, what would those trials be? - Oof, well, if it's to prove that one is a witch, I feel like we've been through enough us witches. You know what I mean? I would like to flip it, and have people prove to us that they are cool enough to be in our presence. - Fair. - Mm-hmm. - And we would put them through a gauntlet. - Yeah. - You'd have to drink a lot of potions. - And you want some? - See, if you survive. - I don't think I would, yeah. - Okay, let me say. - No, I'm sure, right away. Just first drink, I'm out. Yeah, I appreciate the attempt though. - We would just have stomachs of steel. - Oh, that's good, yeah. Yeah, I'd be having like couple of bismar on the side the entire time. That would be the potion for all I know. - Yeah. - Something that's also so fantastic about, you know, Agatha along, you know, WandaVision was, there was such a love letter to television there, tell them out there. And I'm curious for yourself, were there any shows growing up, or even today that you really wish you were a part of? - Oh, so many. I mean, when I was a kid kid, I was obsessed with "Little House" on the Prairie, 'cause I loved paw. And I just wanted to like run around and like a gingham dress and just clean up the pigs. That sounded really fun to me. - Yeah. - I also always wanted to take the love boat to Fantasy Island, because I thought that that's where it went. - That's where it went. - Yes. - I love that. - I love that. - Yeah, there's so many worlds that you just, that I wanted to jump into, for sure. I love cheers. I loved, yeah, there's so many Norman Lear shows that I just wanted to dive into, for sure. But I honestly, I was like a visitor to those shows. Yeah, I'd miss my friends. - That's awesome. No, that's really cool. I like that there's all these different shows in the past that you always kind of envision and see like, oh, how did they do this and how did they make this? - Yeah. - Now you're kind of seeing all the behind the scenes. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean, especially on WandaVision, like they had the same cameras. They used like the period lights. They used like the period, like practical magic. And we did a lot of that on Agatha, well, there was like a lot of practical magic. In fact, we tried to use the least amount of CGI and green and blue screens as we possibly could. Yeah. - Those have thrown you off a lot too. You're seeing all the magic happening in real time. - It actually caught, it actually was more immersive because you weren't acting to Xs on a box somewhere. Or for 10, like you weren't trying to manifest what you thought the world was gonna look like in front of you, you were actually like in the world. - That's so cool. - Yeah, like that big set, that big, you know, which the road set was like the size of a football field and it was like 300, like the paint hand painted screen around it was enormous. And you could just walk in any direction and you would just be in that environment. - Right. - It was crazy. - Yeah. - Amazing. Something that also was really cool about WandaVision was it was that first Marvel television show that came out on Disney Plus. - Yes. - It was right in the pandemic. So everyone was at home watching it. And everyone was pretty-- - And it was perfect consumed by it. Yeah, it was perfect timing. And what was it like for you to kind of see every week people trying to figure out what's next? 'Cause the internet was nuts with it. - I know, it was, I mean, it really was crazy, perfect timing. We were supposed to come out second. And so I think it was just like this, everything just kind of aligned that it was like the, it was like the perfect Friday night show that everybody can wait for. Like it felt very nostalgic as the shows that WandaVision was admiring and showing us. Like so it really did weirdly feel like it was, everything was very meta. And I watched it with my family. My family didn't know anything. I didn't share with, I didn't share anything with them. So we watched it together the whole time, which was so fun, I'll never, ever forget it. But yeah, I thought it was like the best, the amount of, I think the weekly was really worked in our favor for that show, for sure. - Yeah, 'cause everyone's going nuts. They're always trying to figure out, okay, I'm gonna show up here and I feel the same. What we kept hearing was Mephisto, Mephisto. - Yes, a lot of Mephisto, I remember that. - Oh my God. - Yes. - What do you think is gonna happen with this now going for? 'Cause we're going right into Halloween with this. - Yes. - And you feel people are gonna be reacting to each episode kind of thing. - I mean, I have no idea how anyone's gonna be reacting, but I know that there is, Jack Shafer is a master of keeping people on their toes. So I know that that's already baked in there. - Oh yeah. - You know Halloween is the perfect way. - Yeah. - Yeah, exactly. - Awesome, Catherine, thank you so much for your time. - Oh, thank you, pleasure. - Yes, of course, and good luck with Fan Expo. I know you're gonna be walking around a lot there. - So excited. - Which looks really great there too. Maybe not as good as in the show, but it's really fantastic. - Oh, can't wait to see it. Oh, this is always so moving. This is still so nuts for me, to be honest, just to even see her name up there. - That's wicked. You've got so well deserved though. - So wicked. I know it's very cool. All right, such a pleasure. - Thank you. - Thank you. - Great shoes. - Thank you. - They're really squeaky. - Are they really squeaky? - They just keep squeaking everywhere. - That's 'cause it's like SpongeBob, you just-- - Yeah, anywhere you go, we know where you are. - Yeah. - That's kind of how I sneak away. - Joe, thank you so much for sharing your time with us on the movie podcast today. We're such big fans of you. - Thank you. - And you're so damn good in this show. - Thank you very much. - It's so much fun. This is the most fun I've had watching the show this year. - Great. - So it's been a lot of fun, but I have to commend you. We were at D23, and we saw that incredible performance on stage with everyone. How was that feeling for you being on stage in front of that massive crowd of people doing that song? - It was great fun until about four lines in. I just somehow got out of time, so I actually mimed most of it. - Okay. - 'Cause I had Patti LaPone next to me, bailing out on top A, and in my A's, I was hearing the music, but I somehow got out of line, and I was like, "Ahh, there's 20,000 people out there." So I just started miming, which is, that's a confession. There you go. - There you go. - It's a confession, I didn't actually sing. - There you go. - There you go. - That's on the first note and the last note. - But listen, I'll be honest. I commend your acting skills 'cause I couldn't tell. - Great. It was flawless. So it looked great. I just got to know, when you're preparing for a role like this, are you going back? Are you watching WandaVision? Were you a fan of that show? Or are you looking more like, let's look into witches a little bit more. Let's look into the history of this type of thing. Like where did your mind go when you're preparing for the show? - Both. I mean, I think I've probably watched WandaVision like six or seven times through, like pausing and playing and like, get finding out all the insider info. And we had Jack Shafer and Mary Levonos like at our disposal for any questions or anything we had, which is great 'cause I had a lot of questions and a lot of like, yeah, like, which lore and Marvel lore and all of that stuff. But yeah, it's such an interesting, we're so good about the MCU, there's so much to dig into. And like, you can really get real deep into these characters, which is fun. - Yeah, was there something specific that you learned about either like witches or the making like WandaVision that like fascinated you most that you're like, oh, I'm like, this is something I'm constantly thinking about? - I, Sashir, I can't even, I probably can't even, this is still like in half tell because of the-- - Okay, too rude. - Sashir told us the origin of like, witches writing broomsticks. - Very, everyone should Google it. I won't tell you, but it's a very interesting story. Okay, really like, it's cool. - I'm going to, I can't do it right now, 'cause we're on the clock, but I promise you, as soon as I leave this for one new. - Everyone should, maybe everyone over the age of 18 should. - Okay. (laughs) That's perfect. And it leads me like to obviously to Agatha herself in the shows. - Yeah. - Catherine Hahn is amazing. You have such an incredible dynamic with her. And I love that, you know, she even tells you, like you're poking the bear a lot in the show. What was like working with her and like, just having that dynamic with one another, 'cause you guys have a lot of fun on screen. - Yeah, I mean, I think what's so great is me and Catherine have such like great like chemistry. Like, we just clicked with us. Like, there's a trust with each other. That means that we're not worrying about going too far, upsetting to the person, we can just go for it. And I think that's really great as like, as an actress, to be able to feel so comfortable with someone that you can just like, try the new thing and have fun and know that there's also go with it. And then like, you try something else the next take. And, you know, it was just, it was great. - Yeah. And I think it's fun because like, again, at the end of the day, like she's a witch. She's going to, you know, not be as nice as we may see other characters in the MCU. So like, were you like ever like, I don't know. It's funny when you see all these sets. Like, did you have as much as you could say, I guess? Like, did you have a favorite scene with her when you were, you know, filming this? And obviously we'll stay spoiler free. 'Cause we don't want to get too deep. - Yeah, there's some scenes in the later episodes that, you know, the dynamic changes and it's fun. It was fun to play. - Yeah. - Yeah. - One of my favorite things in the series so far is the trials themselves. And I think seeing from what we've seen so far and seeing how they're handled, like it was making us sound like man, like what would my personal trial be for people too? Like to have to do to, you know, either join my coven. So I'm curious for you, like, have you given a thought of like what you would want people to have to do as your own trust? - Oh, I haven't thought of that. I don't think my brain would be as clever as Jack Shafer to be his amazing trial. So it'd probably be like something like, I don't know, beat me in the game of cards and buy me did not. - Oh, okay. - That's very simple. - Very simple. I'm a stroke guy. - Yeah, okay. I like that. I like that. And something that, you know, carrying over from WandaVision, which again, which is show that like you have watched six or seven times, music plays such an incredible role in this series as well. So I was just wondering for you, was there or is there an artist that like you either listen to that gets you in the mind when you're trying to like figure out who your character is? Or is there like a certain song or an artist that like gets you more into the egg of the all along type mindset? - Ooh, what was I listening to while we were filming? I was, you know, I had to, was going through a real Carole King period. - Okay. - I think Carole King's the greatest of all the witches, you know, she's that tapestry I was on repeat pretty much the oil of filming, which is great. - That's amazing. - Yeah, I mean, the show, the music in the show is just amazing. - Yeah. - And it's following an incredible lineage of music. When you look at like even just the first episode and how it's very, it feels like a really cool extension of WandaVision where you're like, okay, what's going on? - Yeah. - Are we in another show? How is this kind of breaking down? Did you have any shows for you that you loved either growing up or now that you're just like, I wish my life would be through the filter of this show or this era of TV? - I mean, I'm not a show, but I always like, say like, as a kid, I wanted to be one of the Goonies. - Oh yeah. - Like, which then filming the show, it felt very much like that. Like there's so many, like part of like the adventure, like on a quest to find, like it felt very like that, which was very full circle. - Yeah. Oh my gosh, 100% I mean, being part of the Goonies, I think would be just any person's trip. - Yeah. - Even like like those amazing sets that they got to go in. - Yeah. - So watching the Goonies, it always feels like when you go in the Pirates, the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. - Yeah. - That's what I feel like being in the Goonies feels like, which is then also like some of our sets for Agatha. I was like, this is the Goonies. - Yeah, it's really impressive from what we've seen so far. I just, I'm just so excited to see where the show's gonna go and I know we can't talk about that, but I just love to know for you, like pre-WandaVision, was there any other Marvel films for you that really made you like fall in love with the MCU or like what was your entry into this universe? - I grew up with the Infinity Saga. Like I remember I was five when I, the first Ironman film came out. So I really grew up with Marvel and then like, when I was a teenager, it was like endgame and in that era. So I really got to experience that for the lens of like a child growing up with it, which was really nice. Yeah, I was just to always like been a part of my life, always just to, I used to put like the date of the next Marvel film coming out and like, can you get this app to like count down up? (laughing) - And we all like laid out. So then when I could go to the cinema to watch them. - That's amazing. So what did it mean for you when you go, you got that call? They're like, hey, I'm now gonna be part of this legacy of movies and shows that have meant the world to me. - I, when I found out I got the part they like, sound like the legal, like you, like, whoa, the legal letter and then at the bottom it says, welcome to the Marvel universe. - Amazing. - And I like, was reading the laws, oh, this is great. And then like, I just saw that and I should burst out crying 'cause it was just like, that's the coolest, like, welcome to the Marvel universe, the coolest letter to get. - Yeah, I think that would just, like, I hope, you'd probably have to give it back, but like, immediately go on the wall. - Oh, I've got it, like, yeah, I've got it. - Okay, good. This is one of the makes you have to laugh at it. Is there any other, like, Marvel characters in this that you would want to have part of, like, your coven? Did you, like, if I could have, like, maybe three or four with me and start a coven of my own? I'm like, these are the people I want. - Gamora. - Oh, okay. - Black Widow. I mean, there's so many great characters. - There are. - There are so many ones. There are others, obviously, but I don't think of them. - No, it's all good. The two, they can't sponsor you. - I mean, you got two strong ones out of the game, so I'm like, you guys are set on your own. I just, really quickly, before we wrap up, I just want to congratulate you on "Hard Stopper," 'cause it's an incredible show. Coming back for season three, what are you most excited for it to be returning to this world? - I'm excited for the, like, you know, the season is way more grown up than the last two. You know, the show is growing up with the characters, and it's really fun to get to do that. - That's amazing. Now for Agathol along, you know, this is the perfect, like, spooky season show to get right into. Do you have any, like, Halloween or spooky season traditions that you're planning on doing to watch along with us? - Ooh, I mean, I love carving a pumpkin. I'm from an island called the Isle of Man, and we've carved turnips, not pumpkins. - Okay. - It's an old Celtic tradition. - That's very cool. - They're really much harder to carve, 'cause they've gotten, like, the "Hard" all the way through. - Yeah, I was gonna say, like, that seems like it'd be very difficult. - Yeah, very difficult. - Yeah, so, again, another thing. You're giving me homework after this. - Yeah. - I'm gonna go Google what those are gonna look like as well, too. - Yeah, well, that's what I'll be doing. I love it, Joe. - I love it, Joe. Thank you so much for your time. Again, I'm having such a blast with this. It's so much fun. - Great. - And I cannot wait to see what comes next and see what you do next. So thank you. - Thank you very much. Lovely to meet you. - Love you to meet you, too. - Yeah. - Deborah, Joe, at least I share. How are you guys all doing? - Good, how are you? - Good, and this is my first time at D23. - Oh, nice. - So this has been-- - Me too. - Me too. - Wild experience. How did you all feel coming out on that stage, performing, like, what was that experience doing for you all? - Crazy. - Yeah. - Crazy. - Yeah, it was like a full concert. - Yeah. - And the energy coming towards, it was actually shocking. Like, it startled me because I just didn't anticipate how physical it would feel. - Yeah. - And it was amazing, but it was definitely a surprise. - Yeah, so it's such a cool event, and I love how much music plays into both WandaVision and Agatha all along. So I'm curious for the three of you. Is there a specific artist or even a song that you use when you want to kind of get into that mindset, that headspace of performing in a show like this or any other projects that you've worked on? - I really like music. I mean, music can really put you in the space of what you're trying to do, and I find that music is maybe the fastest way for me to access something. But in Agatha, that road song is so, you can't get it out of your head. It just sticks with you, so that kind of voice is. - Yeah. - Yeah, it was kind of like, how fast it went is what you were experiencing. - Yeah. - You know, also, 'cause there's different versions of it, we knew that there was another one coming to keep it, in my head, that's mostly what I was listening to, yeah. - Yeah, I think it's so catchy, yeah. - It is catchy. - And I haven't gotten tired in the slightest. - That's good. That's good speaking of being on the road and doing these trials in the show. I think this is some of the most fun I've had watching a show this year. - Okay. - I was seeing these episodes when we got to watch. I'm curious if each of you had to choose a trial like of your own. If you had to create one for your friends or your family or maybe your enemies to do, you know, what do you think your own specific trial would look like? - If we had to create one for yourself. - No, for myself, we should do it for each other. (laughing) I mean, if I was creating one for my enemies, maybe like a room full of baloney or something. - Oh gosh. (laughing) - And it's like-- - That's just so awful. - Well, it's my enemies, right? I don't want them to succeed. So they're like-- - I have to eat them. - Maybe they have to eat their way out or like climb their way out, but it's like all slippery or something. - I think the trial that I would create for people that I love would be to have to sit there and really receive compliments. - Oh wow. - 'Cause that's hard. - Yeah, it is hard. - But I think it would be good for them. - Mm hmm. - Yeah. - That's all about you. - Oh my God, I don't know. I'm so sharing. (laughing) I don't know. I don't know. I think life is a trial. (laughing) I think just navigating through that. - Yeah, that's hard enough. - Yeah, yeah. - Now, knowing that you were coming back and you guys were joining the cast, like how soon did you guys start practicing like your witch's cackle? You know, like Catherine gives an incredible one. She gave an incredible one at D23 as well too, terrifying. Is that something that you guys are like practicing in the mirror before starting a show like this? - No, we didn't have, we didn't. I think Agatha's sort of the only one that really gets to let her rip and then in the cackle territory. So yeah, but that's maybe I'll start that before the premiere started. - Yeah. - Yeah, I think all these characters are so different too. And they're different types of witches. So I think it kind of doesn't serve everyone to be a cackling kind of witch. - Right. - But it definitely-- - Yeah, but it seems Agatha. - Yeah, we'd love to see it though, I'll be honest. - I think Sharon would practice. - Yeah, she would practice. - I think she'd kill it really quickly before we wrap up. I just want to know, you know, we've had some time since WandaVision now. You know, what's like the witch gossip right now on Wanda? Like how are we all feeling on Wanda and which the events of Westview? How are we feeling about that now? Now that we've had some time to remove ourselves, are we Team Wanda, are we support what she did? Or are we more like, that's not too cool. - Oh, oh, since the heck? - Yeah. - I mean, I guess it's interesting 'cause you understand the psychology of it and why she did it, but of course she was trapping a whole community. - Yeah, I feel that I'm not fond of it. I'm not fond of it. I mean, I don't think I would change my mind. - Right. - Yeah. - Ali, how are you? - I think that, I mean, Alice has been hiding from her witch history. So I think she, I mean, I don't know. I think that she wants to avoid anything to do with witches. So I think she's pretending like that whole hex that didn't even happen. It's not a part of her reality at all. - I got you. I'm very excited to see where the show goes. I'm so grateful for all of your time today. So thank you so much. And I really hope you talk to you again. - Thank you. - Thank you. - Thank you guys. - Jack, thank you so much for sharing your time with us and the movie podcast. Right out the gate, I mean, August 23rd, talking to you on Wanda Envision's anniversary heart. - Oh my gosh, it's August 23rd. - It is. - Oh. - It's meant to be. - You are a fan. - 100%. - Oh my gosh. - Yeah. - Oh, I feel that in my heart. - Right? - That's funny. - It's meant to be. - It's meant to be. - It's meant to be. - I literally have like, when we go into our studio, we have like a big WandaVision poster. And it's like, it's like every day we walk in we're like, oh, it was such a good time. What a series that was. And I guess, you know, right out the gate, like that was the first Marvel Studios series that dropped. And I feel like every single week with that show was an event on the internet. So what was it like for you seeing all of that? And also like really seeing so many people coming together to watch it, especially in those earlier days of the pandemic. - Yeah, I mean, that was a once-in-a-lifetime scenario. We, everything about it was unexpected. You know, we weren't supposed to be the first show out. It was supposed to be Falcon, Winter Soldier. So that was a surprise. We went first. And the fact that there had been a year break gap of Marvel stuff, the fact that everyone was trapped at home, including me and my family. I had COVID when it was dropping. Like, if I, like there were moments where I'm like, this is an episode of Black Mirror. And like none of this is really happening. I'm in some sort of underground bunker. And all of this is fake. Because it was so much fun. They're like looking at the socials the morning after an episode drop, nothing better. - Yeah, I think that was like one of the first shows that I ever like, I'm gonna wake up at 3 a.m. to watch this 'cause I wanna know what's gonna happen next. And seeing, I guess, you know, where we leave Agatha? Was this always the plan? Like, where are we gonna see her next in a series? Was this the next move for her? - You know, we very deliberately left Agatha on ice at the end of One Division. There wasn't a plan at the time of how we would return to her or how we would deploy her later on, but it was the decision at the time to not take her off the board. And it seems really provocative, the idea of leaving her under a spell. Because when we, you know, if and when we come back to her, she might potentially still be under that spell. And so that was like already, you know, in trying to design the Agatha show. I was like, we already have like such a fun jumping off point. - Yeah, and I think finally the identity of the show. Even like, we've been loving the name changes leading up to it. Did you have like a favorite, like name that was out there that was like floating around? Like, actually, like, we know this isn't gonna be the name, but we like this name. - Well, I actually, like, I have my least favorite. My least favorite is, wait, is Covenant of Chaos. - Okay. - Because it is like, you could maybe believe it's real. - I did, but it's like, but it's so bad that I'm like, I would never make a show called Agatha Covenant of Chaos. So I was like, oh, people are gonna believe this one. But like, the show is gonna be a little more sophisticated than this. So that was the one that like got under my skin a little bit. But it was our decision to do it. So I'm like, you did this to yourself, Shafer, like just wait until the next one comes back. - Just roll with it. Yeah, I think like the, the line which, within the wardrobe. - With a great wardrobe. - Yeah. - That was the idea was like we would, they would become increasingly ridiculous. Like Dark Hole Diaries also really silly. - Yeah. - So we're like, we'll just do, we'll do that. And then we'll have a final one that is absurd to clarify that this was all Agatha shenanigans. - That's amazing. - And then we'll get into the real title. - And I love how much music played role. Obviously in WandaVision, like that soundtrack and those songs from Chris and Robert, like there's still like ones I'll go back to. How did music help you formulate this show? It's still a huge part of this. You know, we were lucky to be at D23 and to see everybody come out on stage and perform. - Yeah. - Was amazing. So like, how did music help you shape what this show was going to be? - Yeah. Well, so the music with WandaVision was unexpected. We, in the writer's room, for each writer, I made them write their theme song and then when they came to deliver the script, they had to sing it to the room. - Oh, wow. - Which was the best thing I've ever done. And it was so fun. And then of course, like then it was the handoff of what our intention was. And then the Lopez's, you know, made it real. But it was always like the fun. Like it was the texture and the fun. And, but it was, it took on a life of its own. It was so special largely because of the Lopez's talent and what they put into it. So then approaching the Agatha series, it was a necessity that music be involved. And we ran at that so hard that, that the music became like completely enmeshed with the narrative of Agatha. It is the through line of the show. And it was a, it was a very complicated task because plot and music were holding hands. And, but the Lopez's, I mean, if anyone can do it, it's Bobby and Kristin. - Yeah, they're incredible. And to like to see what we've gone so far in the show is amazing. And I love how like with "WandaVision" and this and where this show starts, it really feels like this is a team that loves television, loves a history of television. You know, what were those shows for you growing up that you wish that you could kind of live your life through the filter of? - Oh my gosh. - I wish I could be part of this family. - This family, this world. I mean, is it totally psycho if I say lost? - I mean, it's a choice for sure. - I mean, I think I was as a kid and a like young teenager, I was really into dystopian stories. I've always been really fascinated by, you know, when an ensemble is put in a situation where they're sort of stripped of everything. And, you know, and that's a little bit what happens in Agatha all along as well. But so I think the lost story of the mystery of the island and like the survival story and all those characters, I mean, I think I don't think I really want to be on the island with them. But it's the world that is most intriguing to me. I guess I think if I were taking the question totally seriously, I would say the love boat. - Sure, that's a good world to be in, for sure. Yeah, and you know, when you get to direct this time around to the first two episodes, like what was that like for you being, you know, in the director's chair, you know, being like the Agatha watching, like everything behind the scenes is time around. - It was fantastic. It was, yeah, the culmination of a dream. I felt so lucky to be able to do that this time. But it also, it felt very natural. I mean, I have mostly directed my own writing and I am a very visual writer. You know, like I don't know if I'd ever be able to write like a novel, like I write how I see that it essentially. - Yeah, and so, yeah, it just, it felt great. And then working with someone like Catherine is extraordinary because she gives so fully of herself and she's so interested in the collaboration. And so we just, especially with the pilot, just like synced up and it was spectacular. - I love that. You know, last question, I have to ask you, of course, like Wanda, big question mark. You know, we're hearing mentions of her. You know, you know, the people want to know when's mother coming home, when hopefully are we seeing her? Are there plans, are those clocks happening? Or is it still, you know, we'll see what happens. - So I can only speak to this show, to Agatha all along. And what I will say about that is that, you know, she casts a big shadow. We are in the corner of the MCU sandbox where her storyline and other storylines involved with her sort of intersect. But this is very much Agatha's show. And as Catherine said, when we first sort of joined hands to start the process on the show, if Agatha's doing a spin-off, she's only going to do an exceptional spin-off, and it is Agatha, every day, all day. - Amazing. I cannot wait to see where the show goes. From what I've seen, it's just, it's the most fun I've had watching a show this year. So I'm so excited to see where it goes. And thank you so much. We've been wanting to talk to you for so long. So this is amazing, thank you. - Oh, it's my pleasure. I'm so, I very much hope that WandaVision fans feel excited and satisfied by the show. So I'm excited to hear that you're excited. - Thank you. Okay, pleasure, thank you so much. Thanks for watching. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music)
