This is Your Morning Routine, Captain G. Hood. That's right, that's right, we're bad. Watch the show on Twitch, follow ESPN1000Chicago, stream the show on the ESPN Chicago app, and on in there. 100.3 HD2, and on ESPN1000Chicago, no, no, no, no. David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood. Good morning, everyone. Good morning. This is Bears Victory Monday, Monday, Monday. Here comes the full snap, dance against side, over a man, swift for the first to the 25th 20. He's going, baby. 10-5, end zone, touchdown, Bears, 36 yard, John by DeAndre Swift. Now we're going to throw. Stepping up. And hit by Swift. Paul comes out. 15 yard line. It is. Bears football. Takes the fake and Williams pulls back, throws it into the middle, pump it, makes the grab, falling down to the 38th. Snap to snap for the championship, the backfield pressure coming, ripped up, and down he goes. German, next to the senior, lays the hammer down. Out of it, outside of a Madunze, snapped a cater of Williams in the pocket, scanning, throwing back of the end zone, feet down, back of the end zone, DJ Moore, touchdown, touchdown Bears. It's a Bears Victory Monday Monday. It's a Bears Victory Monday on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000. And we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. What David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Shay. We've got Jay Moore, we got you for this three hour ride here as the Bears defeat the Rams by the score of 24 to 18. And we'll take your phone calls all day here, 312-332-3776, our phone number has capped the Bears are back to 500 here, two and two with the victory as Soldier Field yesterday. Johnny, that was a must have victory. And it was done in the fashion that Ryan Polls drew it out. His quarterback was efficient, didn't take chances with the football, didn't turn over the football. I thought that was his best game to date. No, it wasn't 363 yards like a week ago. It was more pedestrian in terms of numbers. But when he had to make a big throw in a big spot, whether that's to call, commit with a laser beam right down the seam, first down. And the touchdown to DJ Moore. And if you go to Shay's Twitter at Shay Norling, it was, he had a window of about the size of an envelope to fit the ball in. Defender was right there. Boom. Time right in the hands, touchdown, DJ got the feet down, touchdown Chicago. And then thank you, Shane Waldron, DJ Moore sent up the game, this dude was getting after people throughout the game for the fall starts or the this or the coaching them hard. Good. Then you listened to what your leadership committee told you. But what I really liked is we're going to smash you in the mouth and we're going to put Doug Kramer at full back. Good luck, three tight ends on that set and went back and watched it again. Three tight ends, Everett, Lewis, come at and Doug Kramer, we are running right at you. Good luck trying to stop it. Roshawn Johnson finds pader without having a full back in place with blasting game. It was good to see Kramer with an opportunity to help the ball club is a team after all cap and is a team. Correct. We mentioned it a couple of days ago, all hands on deck, offense, defense, special teams, whatever it takes, you need to win a football game and the Bears did that on Sunday. For me, cap, this is going to be entitled the Jekwan Brisker game. This is what it is for me because you had the game winning interception. He was able to get unencumbered to the quarterback and was able to get a sack there. Stafford did not feel the heat and Brisker went right there off the line. Boom. Right there. Sacked him. He had 12 tackles as well. The game is the Jekwan Brisker game because for a guy that made an egregious penalty, he bounced back. And a game, by the way, marred with a lot of ridiculous penalties by the Chicago Bears and some undisciplined. We will give Brisker a lot of credit for coming back from that penalty that he had and really made a difference for the Bears defensively. Yeah, and he should have had two picks in the game, but he didn't reestablish his second foot on the first interception in the end zone. Yeah. So he stepped out of bounds and the way the rule reads, just for everyone so we're clear, you have to reestablish two feet in the field of play and then you can make the play. If you touch the ball before you do that, then it is not an interception. It was simply an incomplete pass. Super cool though to watch how hard he was hitting and to watch the way the Bears, that defensive line, got after Stafford, harassed him. They made it tough and that's a talented offensive team missing Cooper Cup, Puke and Akua. So when they get them back, they will be a better team, but I thought the Bears offensively took care of the football. And as I said, I thought that was Caleb's best game. Let's talk about what you just mentioned before, talking about the DJ Moore touchdown. I think that the glimpse into the present and the future for the Bears offense, the way the Bears went down the field surgically, going down the field and getting that touchdown from Williams to DJ Moore. Just the mixture of running the football, short passes, Caleb on the run as well. All of that I think is shows you that the Bears can score with time to be able to confuse the defense. I think they did a great job. That particular drive gave me solace to think, well, that's a bright future here. Well said. DeAndre Swift. We haven't even mentioned him. He did something we haven't seen since, I believe he was a Michigan state grad, Jeremy Langford in 2015, 70 rushing or more, 70 receiving or more. He did that yesterday. He ran the ball with authority. They ran between the tackles instead of stringing this guy out, running wide. And then the touchdown, there's a really good block by Cole Comette, who you can see laying on the ground. He's got his fist up like that's gone. That's going to the house. A really good job by Coleman Shelton on that play with a really good block. And then DeAndre Swift did all the rest. Caleb, as I said, very efficient with the football when he had to make a big throw in a big spot. He delivered and the Bears win 165 all purpose yards for DeAndre Swift was 93 yards rushing and 72 yards receiving. That's all good for DeAndre Swift to guide those much maligned and rightfully so, the first three games of the season where he's like, hey man, find a hole, get a hole, be able to get in an opportunity to help this team offensively. And less than two yards a game was not getting it done. I'll say this, Cap, you didn't necessarily pay him to do what he did yesterday, but he did a lot. He did a lot to be able to help a young quarterback. Not only run the football, but just on the short yardage game, you know, for some, they would say that the short passes like the new run, well, the run is the run, but the short passing game also is almost like a run as well. Yeah. No question about it. When we started the game and they threw that wide receiver screen or out, a little dump off to DJ Moore, I'm like, yeah, here we go again. Can we get DJ down the field please, a little vertical? Yeah, a little. And then when they started to run the ball effectively, just stay with it. Just keep hammering them hard. And Caleb Williams, uh, when he hit the throw in the middle of the field to call commit, that thing was a laser beam. Great throw. Great catch. All right. Here we go. And then the play where I'm like, whoa, wait a minute. That's Tom Cramer back there. What are we doing? Mm hmm. Oh, let's do this. I thought, please don't be a decoy and then throw the football. Just run it at him. Bam. Roshan Johnson. Into the end. So I have a question for you though. You're the man in charge of the audio board there, right? Yeah. Right. As flus would say, and he'll be with us at eight twenty right, uh, did you not play a cut last week, right? Where Shane Waldron said our short yardage back is Khalil Herbert. Believe so. Yes. He had exactly zero carries yesterday. Yeah. So I want to know who performed the code red. Who performed the code red from a few good men on coach Waldron? And all of a sudden this fascination with running Khalil Herbert between the tackles inside the five went by by. Let's go, Mike. Yeah. Okay. Maybe it was you. Yeah. Maybe it was right. I think it was more like Ryan polls and then leadership committee got to him to perform the code red. We're not running that dude in there. And so he got exactly zero carries and Roshan Johnson tough yards got it first down. Let's go. The Doug Kramer play in the middle of the field first down again. Thank you. Get an identity. Let's go. Well, you know what that is cap? That's coaching. Yes. That's that's adjustment coaching for week to week. We did not do well enough as a coaching staff to put the players in a position to win against the Colts. So why don't we try this wrinkle? You got you. I mean, this is not not foreign to you. You've done it a lot as a coach like, okay, we tried this. We believe in this, but it's not quite what we want. The results are not there. So why don't we try this? Right. So let's try this. Yes. That's all. I mean, hats off to try something new, something different 24 18 a win for the Chicago Bears and how do they do it because they didn't do the same old same old. Correct. They didn't say what it. They didn't stay wedded to. Well, my playbook says this is this what we started off in training camp. Well, clearly it's not working because the running game was constipated for a while here until yesterday's game. Yep. It was a start and stop. Could not find a hole. And again, the offensive line, we just want to let you guys know this morning, if you watch the game, it's still not fixed. There's still issues with this offensive line. I mean, happy for the victory. But again, because it's just a bunch of moving parts here, guys out of position and all this other stuff, it has to be fixed, but I was just happy to see the running game work and also some time for Caleb Williams to throw. So that means that week after week, it's getting better despite some of the issues around the offense. Yeah, and you had Kevin Jenkins go down in game. That's tough. That's tough. He's your most talented offensive lineman. But they were better when he went out. Some guys stepped up. Matt prior to see him on the DeAndre Swift run, he got a block and then he's running in the middle of the field with his fist up leg. That's gone. Yeah. Like it was cool to see the emotion guys fired up the way they're playing. So again, it's one game, now you got to get to want to know this week against the team you should beat in your building. You should beat the Carolina Panthers. So let's worry about this week. I don't care about London or the bye week or anything. This week get to one and oh, that's all you got to do. And also the game ball. You think Brisker, Swift, Caleb, nope, it goes to Mars, Sadie's, Lewis. Love it. Love that dude. Think about it. Team Victor, right? There's only so many times you do this now. Okay. This is for Big Dog. Hey, two out of 72 games. There you go. And then he spoke. He was awesome. Nobody had rather do this with blah, blah, blah. Really. Yeah. Football is my life. You know what I'm saying? I've done a lot of those outside of this, but they're nothing better than experiencing the victory with y'all, man, right? Everything we talked about during the week showed up today. Now we can look in that mirror. Right. We are who we know we are. Yeah. Right. Right. So the big part of it is it's coming back next week and doing it again. Right. Right. Anybody could do this once, man. Anybody. What's special on here, man? You got to believe it. Right. Right. You said you got to believe it. What's special? We work hardest. We deserve this. Right? Right. I'm so grateful, man, to be at this point in my life, 40 years old. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. 40 years old. Damn. Damn. You got to be young, man. Yeah. It's crazy. My spirit, we always have a high state of mind in whatever it is that we're doing every single day, so we show up authentically, every single day. Let's get in here and bring it in tight here. Hey. Hey, family. One, two, three. Yeah. Hey. Apparently, Jay Moore is in there with Kevin Hart's. Yeah. Listen. Hey. What's going on? The best is he's using right like flu shoes is where I'm like, wow, it's what you do, man. You just fired up. You don't know what you're saying. You know, as he refludes, it's, it's Marseilles, they're just fired up. That's all. They don't know what they're saying. It's not a speech. It's just from your heart. It's whatever comes out. He is so loved in that room. Oh, man. So let's get your thoughts here on a Bears Victory Monday, 312-332-ESPN-332-3776, which you loved and what the Bears still need to work on with the Bears winning 24-18. It's Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1,000, also on YouTube, ESPN Chicago. This is cap and Jay Hood, they beat in the traffic commute, so you don't have to. Yeah. Oh, man, hit by sweat, ball comes out, 15 yard line, Bears have it up to 16, it appears. No indication yet, but Tom there said things are going to be. It is Bears football up with a kind of guard, oh yeah. Indeed, the Bears defense coming up big yesterday as the Bears defeat the Rams 24-18. Travon Dexter coming through cap with a really nice play as well as Montez Sweatt, Ken, all hands on deck, you're trying to win a football game, a game that you should be able to win against the right, bank up Rams team and the Bears come through winning 24-18. There was just a lot of emotion going into this game because if you fall the one in three, now you're starting to doubt everything. Then the talk is, oh, are we going to get a coaching change or the OC getting fired? You had to win this game. Again, the word must win, that's usually reserved for elimination games. Must win or you're out, but this was as close as it gets. You needed to find a way to win and they did. So now go back to work, get healed up, figure out your offensive line issues, clean up some of the undisciplined, fall start stuff, some of that from everything I was hearing after the game and a couple of calls that I made, some of it is on the old line, yes, but some of it, they said it's just getting comfortable with the cadence that Caleb brings. It's a different cadence that Justin brought or that Mitch brought or that Tom Brady would have brought had we gotten that deal down apparently, but it's a great step. It is a great step, but again, for this Chicago Bears team that has supposed to, again, be better than what they have been in the past, some of those pre-snap penalties and those things, that can happen. You want to do that against a good team? See how you're unfair. Correct. Blind side blocked by Braxton Jones, first in 25. What a great way to start the game, Cav. Oh, that first in 25. First in 25? What are you doing? I get tired of watching the Bears starting first in 15, like first in 10, then it's a penalty. Now it's first in 15, second and long. Get tired of that because that's not good for the offense, but definitely not good for a rookie quarterback. Now you're putting him behind the sticks, and now he's like, all right, let's see if we can pick up five yards here. Then we can pick up another eight. Now we're in a third in seven. I'm like, what are we doing here? Come on. We can't make these mistakes. The other thing is, in going back and watching before I went to bed last night, I re-watched like the condensed version for a while. Yeah. To Braxton Jones is not the answer right now at left tackle for me. He's not strong enough. He doesn't have a wide enough base. You see how many times he's upright, and he gets driven back toward the quarterback. You got to have a mauler at left tackle. I agree, but to Ryan polls, he's just been that really solid underdog. Yep. He's root root for a fifth round draft pick that's held his own, but like anything else, you look for upgrades on your roster and polls sees it. I think the way that we see it that he likes what he has, but I know that he wants to do more. Yes. So I get it. It's always been an underdog situation at left tackle. It's just that the general managers always thought, I like him. He's a gamer. He's scrappy. Yeah. But you need some size and an ass back there. It's an anchor. I agree. Yeah. So that's, that's important, man. Like across that line, especially at the ends left and right tackle, you want to have, like I said, a mauler, big guy in there, the amo, the immovable object at left tackle, somebody who's got, you know, that a year ago talks about all the time, heft in the backside where man, he gets a wide base. You're moving that dude. Right. This guy gets too upright. And then next thing you know, he's being driven back into the quarterback. We'll hear from Caleb Williams coming up at 7 30. Matt, he reflues the head coach for the Bears at 8 20 right here on cap and J. Let's go. The phone lines to talk to you. You heard our thoughts. We have more, but we want to get to your thoughts as well. Bears fans on this bears victory Monday as the bears defeat the Rams 24 to 18 Los Angeles, California, co listening on the ESPN Chicago app is on cap and J hood. Co good morning. Hey, good morning. So that's how we doing. What's up there, cookie? Oh, and good doing good, man. Happy victory Monday, man. So real quick, just a couple of thoughts on my and I owe a Tory Taylor a big apology because I called him. I called him out a couple weeks ago, like, dang, we drafted a punter in the fourth round. We could have an O linemen. The kid is special. He flipped the field several times for us, which was definitely helpful after all those penalties. 64 yard client. I mean, it just doesn't get any better at that. The other things that I liked were the, there was a couple of times that Caleb got out of the pocket and ran for a few yards. I think that that's going to be important to his game because everybody knows he likes to throw from the pocket. So just to switch it up, um, shout out to Shane Wilder. And what I'm looking for personally, um, is consistency on the offense. I need consistently good play calling. Even if we lose again, I need the play caller to call a good game consistently more than two or three times because I'm sick of in the bad, get it right for one or two games and then four game losing streak. So, and by the way, Co, your, um, not complaint, but a question about having an offensive lineman, uh, in the off, you know, in the draft, right? They got one, but I understand your point. You're saying, Hey, imagine if you had someone that you could plug in right away on that offensive line. But again, what's already Taylor, I had no problem with Taylor being drafted because if I told cap, you need to have the best across the board, offense, defense and special teams. If he's the best, if he's the best punter on, on the board, you take him and look what he did there. He looked like a golfer out there. Oh man. Like the way he gets it to hit and kick back. I'm like, how do you do that? Pretty strong, pretty strong. So I guess I have a good day out there in LA. All right. We put your telephone call. We say hello to Lewis who's on the road. He's with us here on Captain Jay Hood Lewis. Good morning. Good morning. Hey, good morning, guys. Always love to talk you after a while. I don't enjoy talking after a lot, but I love talking guys after a win. There were a couple of things that I liked that the offense looked a little bit more consistent and that someone finally knocked some sense in the Shane Waldron at the second half to get him to actually get DeAndre Swift, like with Quick Dumpoff, do what he's good at, which is, you know, getting the ball in space. And he's and start running Roshan Johnson between the tackles. What I don't like is it seems like he still kind of has a bit of an issue figuring out his personnel. I actually noted it down on that first drive, I believe. There was a quick out to call for Matt for CJ, more blocking for him. Why is that not the other way around? Why is Cole not blocking for DJ? He's faster. He'll get or he'll get the line to game. Caleb Williams, I think he's diagnosed him. Caleb Williams, he's diagnosed him with field amazingly. I mean, he's getting to the line. He's making his checks. He is a very, he's a cerebral player that I haven't gotten to see played for Chicago, possibly ever. Now the downside, I don't know if it's we're overloading with information, but he was brought in partially because he has such a good default. He is consistently missing his deep ball. Like, I think he left 21 points on the board because he missed more on that option. That was not on Caleb that DJ slowed down. That ball was part where they wanted it. On the fake screen on the fake screen, I thought that no, I'm talking about the one down the right sideline into the end zone. Oh, no, I'm talking about the fake screen where DJ Moore had inside leverage and Caleb threw it out or threw outside back left corner. That made no sense to me. You should throw that inside where he's got leverage. It was that and he missed. He did Mr. Oma Dune say again, I like the way Caleb's progressing. Don't get me wrong. I just wonder if like maybe because he is so cerebral. If they're feeding in too much zip, he's in year three, as opposed to a cerebral rookie. They're teaching him like a cerebral year three player and that's talking to things. Just a little too much in this to be followed. That's fair. But you're going to get that with a rookie. No question about that. Here's the thing. You make a great point, Cap, and so does Lewis. All these things have to just get better moving forward. Yep. And as far as the blocking is concerned, as far as the blocking is concerned, so you block for each other, Cap. Just because Cole is bigger, DJ Moore's going to be able to block too. That's the whole thing about being an offense. If you're not getting the ball, you have to block to help your teammate. And so he's talking about that play where it's set up for a commit. They can't do it for each other. No, they've got both those plays in their trick bag. I was talking about the throw down the right sideline into the end zone. Got it. Now, do I think a Caleb would say I'd like to put a little bit more air under it? Yes. But go back and watch DJ does not run through the ball. Otherwise, that's probably six. Yeah. Got to hit that one. Yes. The throw again, go back and watch it. The throw he made for the touchdown to DJ, he's got the width of a piece of paper to get the ball in the defenders right there. Oh, yeah. And if you go back and watch it, it is scary how perfect that throw is like, whoa, haven't seen that in this town ever. Every game where I lose, you see an elite throw or throws by Caleb Williams. Correct. So you see the glimpses there, not flashes to get you fired. That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about the stuff I saw at USC every now and then you see a cap, you're like, oh, that's why he's the number one pick. Correct. The keyhole throw, just that little bit of a space to be able to get that ball in there and the throw to come out up the middle. Yeah. That was a laser beam. Great catch by Cole. He had to go up to get it. Caleb put it right where it had to be. Yeah. So that's why he's a number one pick. Correct. Correct. If so, if you go question that, I saw a lot of that in college, especially his junior year, not a surprise. So good win. Take it two and two back to work and let's go. If you're on hold, you will be on the air. 3 1 2 3 3 2 ESPN 3 3 2 3 7 7 6 our phone number coming up. We will hear from the aforementioned Caleb Williams. Cap and J hood weekday morning seven to 10. Checkmate one six lannier suppression on target. That's why I see him in my shot shot or no shot with cap and J hood or yes we get 1000 and ESPN Chicago app. That's why I see him in my shot. Good morning and welcome in to the cap and J hood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. Matt Eber flew say head coach for the Bears joins his day 20. Right now time for a shot or no shot. Here's Shayne Orlin. Shayne. Good morning boys on a Bears victory Monday. How are we feeling? Really good. Great football weekend Saturday and Sunday. A lot of interesting twists and turns. When you think it's going to be one way, it goes the other, especially in the NFL. I don't know how you guys gambled on a regular basis, man. It's tough. Oh, my God. Yeah, it's tough. Survivor pools are just straight up gambling minutes. You really don't know. Is there one thing that we definitively know in the NFL? No, because I that survivor pool that I was in with our friend Peter from Miami, they reached it ended after three weeks. They had a winner. So they restarted it this week. I have two entries with my brother. I took the Jets in one of them. Thank you. Lost a home to the Broncos. See? Like, what the hell, man? See, five told you we're going to hold Denver to 10 points. Oh, there's a win. I'm advancing, surviving advance for us. Nope. Another team with a whole bunch of pre snap penalties, the Jets. And then a missed kick at the end. And so that was a kick of the balls to you. Right. Greg Zurline, Greg the leg, 51 yards. Well, that's a chip shot for him. Nope. Wide. I don't know this league. I have no understanding what's going on. Shea said that last week, he goes, I, hoodie, I just don't know anymore. It's just, it's just so ridiculous. But you know what? We got to get back on the horse again, Shea. That's all you can do. You just power through. Jeez. And understand water will eventually find its level and these things will balance themselves out. It's crazy. It's unbelievable. Yeah. All right. Let's get started with shot or no shot. We knew that year two was going to be a big opportunity for Jervon Dexter, bit of an unsung hero. We've talked about the punter. We've talked about Caleb. We've talked about Waldron. Haven't talked a lot about Jervon Dexter. So far this year, he's, he's delivered on the year two leap entered yesterday. Top six in pass rush win rate among defensive tackles per ESPN exited yesterday with his third sack in four games and two quarterback hits on Matthew Stafford shot or no shot. Jervon Dexter has arrived. Oh, that's a shot. Absolute shot. Three sacks on the season as you said. And the hits and the pressures and the passion that he's playing with. And he talked about how hard he worked in the off season. He called it marathon training and he wanted to trade like a skill position player, even though he weighs 300 pounds. Dude, that guy is ripped. He's in amazing shape, shows you when you commit to a program and you, nothing gets in your way, you could do incredible things. Yeah. All summer, we were trying to figure out who else can get to the quarterback besides Montes sweat. Yep. Because there was always question marks about, well, we like Billings, but can he get it done? The market's Walker solid veteran on the other side, pretty good. Jervon Dexter, we always put Dexter and Pickens in the same category because the same draft, right? So we're just like, okay, so who's going to be able to emerge? Dexter's been that guy. It's a, it's a pleasant surprise. Correct. Like Taylor early in the season. It was just a pleasant surprise. Someone's got to get to the quarterback. And so Dexter, what he's been able to do has been very solid. I like it. And by the way, shot out, Shane Norlin, Jared versus a monster. He was my draft crush, man. I love that kid. Wow. Awesome. Wow. To see all over the field. He gets after our offensive lineman. Again, we don't have whoever, Jason Kelsey or Lane Johnson or any of those dudes on our offense. Holy cow, that guy's almost unblockable. Yeah. Phenomenal. Shay. All right. DJ Moore said after the game, Shane Waldron was doing a much better job of holding players accountable this week, openly calling out players who weren't doing their job in the first half of the game. We know last week, DJ Moore, Kayla Williams and Mercedes Lewis met with Waldron telling him he needed to coach them harder. Apparently, he took that message to heart, shot or no shot. The Bears offensive leaders meeting with Waldron might have saved the season. That's a shot. Absolutely. Because when I saw we talked about this earlier with Doug Kramer lined up at fullback and three tight ends, a week ago, we're running a speed option that lost 12 yards. We're blocking with the Andre Carter at the goal line. Like, what are we doing? This was how you play smash mouth football. And if they stop you, God bless them. They didn't. It is a shot. It is, it is saving the season because when you have players that want to be coached, that's a good thing. Because that could be a mutiny too, Shay. We say to go the other way. Like, whatever coach says, coach is coaching us light. So that means we're going to play light. No matter how much money we make, coach says this, we're just doing because we heard this already in the season. We already heard this. Was this not Kevin Jenkins? Who was that offensive lineman? It said, we're just doing with the coach told us. Kevin, Kevin Jenkins, right? Okay. It has to be just more than that. It has to be more than surface level. However, I will ask you this question, sir. So you're a coach. And obviously, as a player, I want to be able to be at my maximum, want to be the best that I can be. But I feel like you as a coach is not getting the job done. Like, you are not coaching me hard enough. How do you take that? Because I know that you're in the film room, and you're busting your ass as a coach. You're working hard. I know you cap. You're not going to leave any stone unturned. You're going to look for every angle. That's who you are. But you still can get, if you said to me, you're my player, coach, can I see you in your office? I've always believed this philosophy. You shout praise. You whisper criticism. You don't embarrass somebody in front of you. I'm not talking about in-game or on the practice. I'm talking about, we're going to have a talk. You bring them in your office. Coach, I got to talk to you. I agree with you. We got to do this better. But here's where you got to be better. You've got to coach harder. We can't be running speed options at the goal line. You're getting too cute. And I'm giving you my from the heart what the guys are feeling. And I'm bringing that to you as a team leader. You got to be better in this area. I like that. I think that that's a healthy dialogue. I do. Communication is the key to anything. Anything. How about the coach at IU? How's he take that? You? No, I'm asking. At 24, at 25, that guy. Oh God. Right. Get up. I remember getting yelled at on the bench by our head coach. Would you stop? Sorry. I just wonder what out with 25 year old cap thinks of that. We're bringing you right. I bring you years of perspective. Yeah. But that guy though, how would he take us? These are young guys, coaches. I mean, well, there's still a young guy. Yes. And clearly, he's taking heart. I just want to know how you would handle it in your situation. Because I think in a wild, you know, wild hair cap, I'm not taking a, hey, I'm looking at film every day to try to make you better. You're coming to hear the criticize me. Get out. Take that. But that and that's why I was so wildly immature that I would get yelled at. So, Waldron did a really good job listening to veteran leaders like Mercedes Lewis and DJ Moore and his quarterback and Cole Clement. I think those were the four guys that were in there. He did a really good job and he obviously adjusted and it worked. It was interesting. It was super cool. Can we do something? Can we do a skit, Jay Moore of 25 year old cap in that situation? See how that works. Thank you. I worked in every day to make you better. You criticize me. I think you're 19. The 10 year year old should meet with him, honey. Young Avery Zetterman leading a contingent. Oh, God. To call out Kaplan. Yeah, I like that. I like to see how that pedals out. You're 10. Get out. Hey, all right. I know we just want to talk about going one and oh, this next week, but I'm going to make you look ahead a little bit because the bears are about to hit a very comfortable spot in their schedule. The bears next five opponents. Hoodie are a combined six and 14 on the season and one of those five teams is responsible for three of those wins. After that, the divisional game start shot or no shot. The bears can go four and one in these next five games. Panthers jags at commanders at Cardinals. Panthers jags by commanders Cardinals and then Patriots and then Patriots and then Patriots four and one. That's a no shot. The Cardinal game is just is going to be a weird one. I think that's going to be a lot of bears fans there. Oh, no question. It's going to be like I just the commander game is all of all of a sudden very interesting. Yeah, it wasn't when the season started. But boy, that's quite the match up on CBS on the 27th. That'll be a hell of a game. Oh boy. Yeah, it's like it's the homecoming for Kayla going back to the district and then how well the commanders are played as of late, the conversation about the two young quarterbacks in the same draft, all that, all that. Hello, Baloo. That's an interesting game. You know what it is? It's a passing of the torch game hoodie where Jaden Daniels will hand off the Oroy to Kayla Blames. Oh, wow. That'd be offensive rookie of the year. Four and one over the next five. I don't know. I just want to get to one and all this week answers question though. It's a shot or no shot. They'll go four and one in the next five. I say no. I'll pass. Come on. You can't pass shot or no shot. Cap. The Panthers are awful. The Jags will Doug Peterson be coaching that game. Who knows? Yes, he will. Commanders will do what you want. It's coin flip at Arizona. They look dreadful. Don't do that coin flip now with the camera now. Hang on now. But I'm sorry. Cody, I'm selling four and one. Okay. Cardinals look dreadful and the Patriots forget about it. They're the worst team in football. I'll say it's a shot. But again, I want to get to want to know this week. That's all I care about. Get better tomorrow with your therapies. Go back to work. Get ready for Sunday starting Wednesday and get to want to know. I go one play at a time mentality. In life or just again. Just the bears because that's not in life. That's how I live in life. Yeah. One day at a time, man. Okay. That's it. Find show I've in the apples, by the way. Great CBS show. One day at a time. I would say that. Thanks, Schneider. It is. He was Schneider. He always wanted to get on body Franklin, but they just never had. There we go. How does that guy do that? I don't mean the show. How does J Moore do that? There's no script for this show. We just go. How does he get one day at a time music within like eight seconds of you saying anyway to you? Okay. Did you tell him to have that ready? No. Because you didn't plan on bringing that up. No, it's just excellence cap. J Moore, that's just dollar man. You know what they say about the greats cap? You don't have to get ready. Speed ready. You are ready. Yeah. You should never be surprised at the excellence of one J Moore. I'm never surprised, but then wow. You were literally surprised right now. Like that was like when I think about it, I'm like, well, that is J Moore, but that's amazing. Well, day at a time. That's it. Find show on CBS. Enjoy. This is it. That's it. Straight ahead and rest assured. Valerie Bertinelli in that show. She was. Loved her. Teenage at the time. Here is. So was I. You were not. You were not what you were. Oh, you were an old grizzled man. 78 78. I was 18 years old. 79. I was 19. Still a little bit shaky there, our Kelly. We turned out to show more Kelly. There he was. Wow. Jay Moore outside of the Chevy Blazer just waiting for Bertinelli to get off. She was at the Rock and Roll McDonald's. You're there. Wow. Ah. In the closet. She was awesome. Here is Shay Norley. Now as we finish up shot or shot or no shot yesterday on Fox during the Bucks Eagles game, Tom Brady told the story of his recruitment to Tampa Bay. I want to always think it's just about the money, but you were showing this this last night. I thought it was so cool. It's how you made your choice. So I brought. I brought these. I saw them at the house and I said, you know, I'm bringing these to show KB and there was a lot of reasons to choose Tampa and I made about 18 criteria. Why? And there was things all the way from a salary, obviously, to the weather, to the facilities, to the how great the players were and ultimately Chicago was a team and I've never told that story before. They were very stealth in their recruitment. I was seriously considering. But in the end, it came down to Tampa and it was close to my son Jack. I love Bruce Arians and the role that he played in offense and ultimately the great players like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin's that I'm still out there watching today. Wait a minute. Tom Brady almost chose the bears shot or no shot. If Tom Brady had come to Chicago, he'd have one less ring. That's a shot. That's a shot. Bruce Arians. Maggie. Yes. No question. Was Gronk coming to ask Gronk on the Fox pregame. Hey, Tom said, they almost picked the bears. Would you have gone to Chicago with him? He's like, he was going to Tampa. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. That's King Griffey as a white Sox. That's that's the end. Yeah. There's no question. Yes. Yeah. That he would have been a bomb at the end. No offensive line. No way. But also, by the way, Ryan Poles hats off. Yeah. You quietly try to get Tom Brady. No, Ryan Pace. Ryan Pace, rather. Yes. Ryan Pace. Yeah. Yes. I'm trying to get him out of my memory. But yeah, very good. Stealth. Why don't you give him a call? Let's see if he can get more intel on that. I did. And? Oh, they were. They were in there and just weren't getting him. His kit kit being in Florida was a big thing. You find out how close? They were there. And they were the clear number two. But he was going to Tampa. Giselle wasn't moving up here. Sorry. Okay. Just want to make sure that you're aggregated properly. David Kaplan reporting. That's what you just did. Thank you. I just am giving you some background intel. Intel. They work it. It's out there on Twitter now. Thank you. All right. Matt he reflues. They had a green bird can aggregate. He's actually alive. So just was going to say the ghost of Greenberg. Yes. Rest in peace. Matt even flus will join us coming up next on the Captain Jhood morning show. Welcome back. Welcome. Welcome back to Captain Jhood on Chicago's on for sports. ESPN Chicago. It's a Captain Jhood morning show on a ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Hope that you're going to have a great Monday and a great week. We're going to hear from Matt. He reflues the head coach for the Bears momentarily. We'll hear from Lance Briggs as well. Coming up at 935 right here on Captain Jhood. Yeah, it's so interesting cap about Tom Brady. What if you went to the Chicago Bears? What about Baker Mayfield? I think that all of us as a show respects Baker Mayfield for pulling the nose up on his career and that what what he was is a Brown is that necessarily how we define him. But he did make some comments that yeah he's in there and Brady's not there and we'll get to that momentarily because I thought that Baker's comments kind of gave a little spark to Tom Brady kind of looked inside his soul a little bit boy. Boy, he was intense Brady. He even tipped. Yeah, just tipped. Now it's time to hear from the head coach for the Chicago Bears. Matt Eber Flus. Matt Eber Flus. Eber Flus. He had a coach up the Chicago Bears. It was really good. I mean, there was a lot of good situations that we had breaking down the Bears and the latest updates all season. You know, there's some really good players on both sides. Can that person function with that match? Matt Eber Flus with Captain Jhood on ESPN Chicago. It's a Captain Jhood morning show on ESPN 1000 and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app also on youtube. YouTube.com look for ESPN Chicago. Time to talk to the coach on the hotline. The car is tired on the hotline. Good morning, coach. How are you? I'm doing well. Coach after reviewing the film, what's up most about the win against the Rams yesterday? Yeah, I was just really pleased with the complimentary football that we displayed at the end of the half and also the end of the game. I thought that was really good to see the guys come together on all phases and offense, defense and, you know, and kicking. So it was really good. You know, that was the challenge that we had to have during that game to win that game. So the guys did it and made some plays at the end to seal the deal. Matt, let's talk about the leadership committee offensive side that met with Shane Waldron this week. And we heard stuff going into the game and then after the game. So going into the game, Mercedes Lewis and others said, coach, you got to coach us harder. You got to hold us to a higher standard. And here's some things we think we need to do a little more downhill running with our backs, smash people in the mouth. And then after the game, DJ Moore said, Oh yeah, he held us much more accountable. He was getting after us for pre snap penalties or miss blocks or whatever the case may be. You're there every day. Please take us inside those meetings and the fallout from them. And then the result. Yeah, just really about communication, you know, and that's that's really what it is. We're always trying to improve that. We're always trying to get better, you know, so this week's no different. You know, last week was, you know, obviously was in the public eye a little bit, but we're always looking to get better and we're always looking to improve our communication with coaches, with players and amongst each other just to improve the product on the field. And you know, if it's been saying it for the last couple of weeks, we want to learn the ball better and come up with some good solutions to be able to do that. And again, we saw the fruits of our labor this last week. Camp, I think that made us all feel good to be able to see the bears run the football effectively. We've been talking about coaching and talking about it, trying to find a way to run the football in 131 yards on the ground. That works, right? Oh, we're talking about when you went to three tight ends down at the goal line and I'm like, wait a minute, that's Doug Kramer back there. Yeah, I like that type of football because it may not be fancy, but good luck to you trying to stop it. If you do, God bless you. Where did that come up with? Did you have that camp? Was that put in this week? Where did that germinate from? Yeah, we've had that person, though, and all the way in camp, you know, we had a couple of plays in there and we added a few more, but that's just our goal line package. And the guys did a good job of executing there. And Doug did a nice job of, you know, doing his job too. And I thought the, you know, obviously, Roshan does a really good job. We're running downhill on those and we had the right guy doing it. So it was really about what we were doing and who was doing it. And the guys did a nice job of execute. Coach, we don't talk enough about the bears defense. I call this like the jacwan brisker game because he's just all over the field just making plays. What did you like most about what the bears did defensively? Because there's so many check marks. We say that went right and getting interceptions and flipping the field. All these things really worked out in your favor in a lot of ways. Yeah, the defense did a nice job of holding, you know, they had some drives, you know, they had some explosive plays, but they did a nice job of holding in the red zone and getting those takeaways and at the, you know, timely takeaways. And really our, our pun team did a wonderful job. At the end of the game, you know, I've put them in pen in that sixty six yards of to the LA eight. Then he had the one where we, you know, made them use all their time outs and expire everything out there and they end up having, you know, about a minute to go with no time outs. But that was a putting pen also to the LA eight. So the guys did a really good job there executing, you know, as a defense and special teams and really good interception at the end by brisker. Coach, we'll get to Caleb in a minute, but you talked about that part. What was the rationale? Is that a call from upstairs? Is that a Richard high tower call or is that a your call to take a time out on the last punt rather than taking the delay a game to let the clock run down and then saving the time out of God forbid they scored out a fluke, you would need that. Yeah, so we took it all the way down to one second. So the time was the time, you know, we took it right there because they can decline that and they more likely were going to and we like exactly where that positioning is right at the 45. He likes hitting it from there and getting he can hit it from a lot of places. But that's a sweet spot for him and he didn't make a shot of pinning it down there. Matt, he refuses the head coach for the Chicago Bears. He joins us after every Bears game on the cap and Jhood morning show on ESPN 1000 and on the ESPN Chicago app. Coach, we talked also earlier that, you know, you have your set of goals that you have for the football team. It was just driving me crazy thin the amount of penalties, you know, going backwards behind the sticks cap. We talked about it. No, first and 25 fall start. It just can't it just can't happen. So coach, as you look at that, I know you want to clean it up. How do you address that here with the team? Yeah, it's got it'll have to get cleaned up. You know, you saw it was, you know, we had a fall start. It was, you know, first and 15, you know, it puts you behind. You know, we just got to make sure we clean those things up and and looking at those, you know, some of them are, you know, all the pre snap penalties that we got to make sure we clean those things up. And those are those are all controllable. You know, those are things you can control and we have to do a really good job of correcting that and making that go away in the future because it's, again, you're going to have a couple of them here and there, but we got to make sure that we don't you got to get it cleaned up for sure. Matt hoodie and I were talking about Caleb. We both agree that last week he threw for 363 this week. He didn't throw for half of that, but I thought it was his best game so far this season. The throat to DJ Moore for the touchdown. We went back and watched it on an all 22 cut. And I mean, he has like two inches to fit the ball in there and it's a dart and DJ does a great job getting his feet down. The throw to call commit up the middle of first down. It's another dart over a linebacker with a really good catch. Your thoughts on his game yesterday. Yeah, I was really pleased with it. You know, his rating was 106. You know, that's the highest rating of the year. And that's the way it's about being efficient. You know, he was efficient. You know, didn't put the ball in his way. You know, the number one thing that quarterback has to do is protect the football and he did that. You know, we did that. You know, I know he had one sax fumble, but, you know, prior did a wonderful job of getting back on that ball. We ended up getting a sax fumble right after that. So that was a big part of the game too. But a nice clean play by the quarterback, for sure. Coach, what did you hear about Kevin Jenkins after the game as far as his status? Yeah, I'll get an update on that. I know after the game, it's just I was a bruised rib. So we'll see where that is. Get an update from our trainer today, Andre. And we'll go from there. What's what's more accurate? Taylor being able to kick the ball the way he does or you tee to green on the golf course. You go and tee to green on the golf course or tear or Taylor being accurate as a punter. Oh, what I'm taking 100%. You know, I used to have a pretty good handicap when I was a linebacker coach and that when it got worse when I became a defensive coordinator, it's getting worse when I'm a head coach. It's not good. It's not good, not green anymore. So we go to Taylor, by the way, Kevin, if we want to get a tee to green, correct. Taylor, we're just with the leg. Scotty Sheffler, as they call them up. Exactly. Matt, I got to ask you about DJ more the touchdown pass that did not connect down to right sideline. DJ has said after the game that he goes, that's on me, not on Caleb. I slowed down there and that is a mistake by me. It seemed like the ball might have been a little too hard and a little too flat after watching the tape. What did you see? Well, I think it's really just about the chemistry. You know, you guys got to keep building that chemistry, you know, with the route discipline, you know, and the route, you know, exactly be where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there, but really being, you know, in conjunction together with all the receivers. And again, that's the process that we're going through. You know, so again, you get different coverage contours, different coverages, different players you're playing against. And then you've got the route trees that we run. And those guys walking together. And those guys will get it. You know, I would say they made a couple of great connections yesterday. And again, that's just going to be more consistent as time goes on right there. So those guys will work to get that done. Coach, we say this. Cam and I talk about this all the time about in sports. It's always good to have a veteran and old head in there. I know that every roster position and every roster spot is precious. However, to have the kind of veteran leadership you have in there with Lewis, and then you giving him the game ball yesterday, what does he mean to your ball club to have that kind of experience in the room? It's you can't measure it. You really can't. It's so impactful. And the way that the impact he has on all the players and all the coaches, just presence, his wisdom from being in different places and, you know, stuff he can glean and really pull back from and lean on his experiences to really give us a little nugget here and there. He's outstanding that way. And it's just not always his conversations or his talks he has in front of the team sometimes, but his private conversations that he has with coaches, players throughout the whole building, his leadership is outstanding. Coach, you've got the Panthers next and they have had their ups and downs, but it's Andy Dalton, not Bryce Young, so much more of a calming veteran presence back there. Can you give us something on the challenge that you're facing this week when you try? All you can do is be one and all this week, but it's a one and all you got to get. Yeah, it's really about us. You know, we're going to look at the team. We've already looked at it as coaches. I've already met with the coordinators and we're going to do a good job of just cleaning things up that we have to clean up and focus it on ourselves and our execution and try to improve every single week. And that's been our, you know, our charge here in the first part of the season, where I get better every single week. And this is no different coaches always. We appreciate the time. We'll talk to you next week. Okay. Thank you. Have a good day. Many reflux on the car. Tiring out a hound. Cap and Jay Hood weekday morning seven to 10.
