It's a Captain Jay good morning show on ESPN 1000 and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app also on YouTube YouTube.com look free ESPN Chicago time to talk to the coach on the hotline the car is tired not a hotline rattle rattle thunder batter boom boom boom brother Nick don't worry call the car at sleep good morning coach how are you doing well coach after reviewing the film what's the most about the win against the Rams yesterday yeah I was just really pleased with the complimentary football that we we displayed at the end of the half and also the end of the game we I thought that was really good to see the guys come together on all phases their offense defense you know and kicking so it was really good you know that was the challenge that we had to have during that game to win that game so the guys did it and made some plays at the end to seal the deal. Matt let's talk about the leadership committee offensive side that met with Shane Waldron this week and we heard stuff going into the game and then after the game so going into the game Marsadee's Lewis and others said coach you got a coach's harder you got to hold us to a higher standard and here's some things we think we need to do a little more downhill running with our backs smash people in the mouth and then after the game DJ Moore said oh yeah he held us much more accountable he was getting after us for pre-snap penalties or miss blocks or whatever the case may be you're there every day please take us inside those meetings and the fallout from them and then the result. Yeah just really about communication you know and that's that's really what it is we're always trying to improve that we're always trying to get better you know so this week's no different you know last week was you know obviously it was in the public eye a little bit but we're always looking to get better and we're always looking to improve our communication with coaches with players and amongst each other just to improve the product on the field and and you know if it's we've been saying it for the last couple weeks we wanted to run the ball better and come up with some good solutions to be able to do that and again we saw the fruits of our labor this last week. Can't but I think that made us all feel good to be able to see the bears run the football effectively we've been talking about coaching been talking about it trying to find a way to run the football in 131 yards on the ground that works right oh we thought you hoodie and i were talking about when you went to three tight ends down at the goal line and i'm like wait a minute that's Doug Kramer back there yeah i like that type of football because it may not be fancy but good luck to you trying to stop it if you do god bless you where did that come up with did you have that camp was that put in this week where did that germinate from yeah we've had that person though and all the way in camp you know we had a couple plays in there and we added a few more but that's just our goal line package and the guys did a good job at executing there and w did a nice job of you know doing his job too and i thought the uh you know obviously roshan does a really good job we're running downhill um on those and we had the right guy doing it so it was uh it was really about what we were doing and who was doing it and the guys did a nice job at execute coach we don't talk enough about the bears defense i i call this like the jacwan brisker game because he's just all over the field just making plays uh what did you like most about what the bears did defensively because there's so many check marks we say that went right and giving interceptions and flipping the field all these things really worked out in your favorite in a lot of ways yeah the defense did a nice job of holding you know um they had some drives you know they had some explosive plays but they did a nice job of holding in the red zone um and getting those takeaways and at the and you know timely takeaways and and really are our pun team did a wonderful job at the end of the game you know i've put them in pen in that sixty-six yarder to the l-a-8 then he had the one where we you know made them use all their time outs and expire everything out there and they end up having you know about a minute to go with no time outs but that was a puttin pen also to the l-a-8 so uh the guys did a really good job there executing you know as a defense and special teams and uh really good interception at the end by brisker coach we'll get to Kalem in a minute but you talked about that punt what was the rationale is that a call from upstairs is that a Richard Hightower call or is that a your call to take a time out on the last punt rather than taking the delay a game to let the clock run down and then saving the time out of god forbid they scored out a fluke you would need that yeah so we took it all the way down to one second so the time was the time you know we took it right there um because they can decline that and they more likely we're going to and we like exactly when that that positioning is right at the 45 he likes hitting it from there and getting he can hit it from a lot of places but that's a sweet spot for him and uh he didn't waste out a pin in a pin in it down there Matt he refuses a head coach for the Chicago Bears he joins us after every Bears game on the cap and jayhood morning show on a ESPN 1000 and on the ESPN Chicago app coach we talked to also earlier that you know you have your set of goals that you have for the football team it was just driving me crazy seeing the amount of penalties you know going backwards behind the sticks cap we talked about it you know first in 25 the fall starts it just can't it just can't happen so coach as you look at that I know you want to clean it up how do you address that here with the team yeah it's got it'll have to get cleaned up you know you saw it it was uh you know we had a fall start it was you know first in 15 you know it puts you behind um you know we just got to make sure we clean those things up and and looking at those you know and some of them are you know all the pre snap penalties that we got to make sure we clean those things up and those are those are all controllable you know those are things you can control and we have to do a really good job of correcting that and making that uh go away in the future because it's uh again you're going to have a couple of them here and there but uh we got to make sure that we don't uh we got to get it cleaned up for sure. Matt hoodie and I were talking about Caleb we both agree that last week he threw for 363 this week he didn't throw for half of that but I thought it was his best game so far this season the throat to uh DJ Moore for the touchdown we went back and watched it on an all 22 cut and I mean he has like two inches to fit the ball in there and it's a dart and DJ does a great job getting his feet down the throat a call come at up the middle of first down it's another dart over a linebacker with a really good catch your thoughts on his game yesterday. Yeah I was really pleased with it you know his rating was 106 you know that's the highest rating of the year and that's the way it's about being efficient you know he was efficient you know didn't put the ball in hard his way you know the number one thing that quarterback has to do is protect the football and he did that um you know we did you know I know he had one sax fumble but you know prior did a wonderful job of getting back on that ball we end up getting a sax fumble right after that so that was a big part of the game too but a nice clean play by the quarterback for sure. Coach what did you hear about Kevin Jenkins uh after the game as far as his status? Yeah I'll get an update on that uh I know after the game it's just uh it was a bruised rib so we'll see where that is uh get an update from uh our trainer today Andre and we'll go from there. What's uh what's more accurate uh Taylor being able to kick the ball the way he does or you tee to green on the golf course. Oh what you can take a hundred percent you know I used to have a pretty good handicap when I was a linebacker coach and that when it got worse when I became a defensive coordinator it's getting worse when I'm a head coach so no it's not uh it's not good not green anymore so. So we go to Taylor by the way Kevin if we want to get a tee to green correct Taylor was just with the leg. Scotty Sheffler as they called him up in fours. Exactly Matt I gotta ask you about DJ Moore the touchdown pass that did not connect down to right sideline. DJ has said after the game that he goes that's on me not on Caleb I slowed down there and that is a mistake by me. It seemed like the ball might have been a little too hard and a little too flat after watching the tape what did you see? Well I think it's really just about the chemistry you know you guys gotta keep building that chemistry you know with the route discipline you know and the route you know exactly be where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there but really being you know in conjunction together with all the receivers and again that's that's the process that we're going through you know so again you get different coverage contours different coverages different players you're playing against and then you've got the route trees that we that we run and those guys walking together and those guys will get it you know obviously they made a couple great connections yesterday and again that's just gonna be more consistent as time goes on right there so those guys will work to get that done. Coach we say this Captain I talk about this all the time about in sports it's always good to have a veteran an old head in there I know that every roster position and every roster spot is precious however to have the kind of veteran leadership you have in there with Lewis and then you giving him the the game ball yesterday what does he mean to your ball club to have that kind of experience in the room. You can't measure it you really can't it's so impactful and the way that the impact he has on all the players and all the coaches just presence there's wisdom from being in different places and you know stuff he can glean and really pull back from and lean on his experiences to really give us a little nugget here in there he's he's outstanding that way and it's just not always his his conversation or his this talks he has in front of the team sometimes but his private conversations that he has with coaches players throughout the whole building his leadership is outstanding. Coach you've got the Panthers next and they have had their ups and downs but it's Andy Dalton not Bryce Young so much more of a calming veteran presence back there can you give us something on the challenge that you're facing this week when you try all you can do is be one and all this week but it's a one and all you got to get. Yeah it's really about us you know we're going to look at the team we've already looked at it as coaches I've already met with the coordinators and we're going to do a good job of just cleaning things up that we have to clean up and focus around ourselves and our execution and trying to improve everything a week and that's been our you know our charge here and these first first part of the season where I get better every single week and this is no different. Coach as always we appreciate the time we'll talk to you next week. Okay thank you. Have a good day.
