Tonight, we'll drift through the celestial wonders awaiting us in the crisp autumn skies of October 2024. So settle in, close your eyes and let the gentle cosmic rhythms carry you to the stars. As we begin our journey, imagine yourself floating weightlessly in the silent void of space, gazing down at the Earth below. The planet is a wash in the warm hues of fall. A blue marble streaked with amber and gold. From this celestial vantage point, we'll observe the cosmic ballet unfolding around us throughout October. Our first stop on this interstellar lullaby is the Draconid Meteor Shower, peaking on the night of October 8th into the early morning of October 9th. Unlike most meteor showers that are best viewed in the early morning hours, the Draconids are most active just after nightfall. Picture yourself reclined on a soft blanket of clouds, watching as these shooting stars, remnants of comet 21p/jakobini zinner, paint delicate streaks of light across the darkening sky. The meteors seem to emanate from the constellation Draco, the dragon, which winds its way between the big and little dippers.
