Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Bring 'em out, bring 'em out. Oh, God. Welcome in to "The Cap and J. Good Morning Show." On ESPN1000 and we are streaming on the ESPNChicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Jay, we've got Jay Moore. And we got you for a three hour ride here on this Tuesday morning with open phone lines for you. 3-1-2-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number. Cap, we have got a lot to get in between now and 10 o'clock. But first, let's talk a little bit about last night. And last night to me relates to the Chicago Bears as far as the NFC North is concerned. Last night in the double header of Monday Night Football, the latter of the two games, we saw the Detroit Lions at Ford Field to defeat the Seahawks 42-29. Now, you and I are always just locked in on how the Bears can get better, how the Bears can be able to get to the postseason, because as you and I say, enough's enough. You built this for a reason. You had three wins, you had seven wins, and now it's time to get to the postseason. But one thing that you and I both knew, and I think that our listeners knew as well, is that this is a tough-ass division. Very difficult from the Lions and how strong that they played yesterday to the Packers, whatever's going on there, with Jordan Love and the quarterback, Minnesota off to a sizzling start, undefeated. It's nothing against the Bears. It's just that the Bears don't take care of their own business just to catch up. It is the best division in football. It is. We thought there would be one team at the bottom, clearly, Minnesota. They're four and a row. Yeah. Packers have a banged-up quarterback they're two and two. The Bears are two and two. That Lions team is no joke. You know, I love their coach, Dan Campbell. Love. And watching them very little bit yesterday, they're creative. They threw a touchdown pass to Jared Goff. He was 18 of 18. Perfect. And they've built an amazing offensive line. Like they're having fun, man. They are. They're a really good team. They can win the Super Bowl. No doubt in my mind they can beat anybody in the NFL. Will they? I don't know. Remains to be seen. But the weapons that their GM Brad Holmes has put on the field, Jameson Williams, a Mon Ross St. Brown, David Montgomery, Jamir Gibbs, Sam Laporta, three first round picks on the offensive line. Pretty special. Cap, what I'm looking at is from the Bears standpoint, I know that the average Bears fan wants it yesterday. Like playoffs and deep playoff run and Super Bowl. But even the Detroit Lions, based on what we saw last year and we see this year, again, I'm sure that some things that Dan Campbell looks like with his roster and goes, I think we have a good roster, but we need to add more. Same thing with this Bears team. I try to look at it with a fair perspective. And the perspective is is that we know where the Bears have come from. We know that the Bears have not been a perennial playoff team. And so you're building toward that. When we get criticism, a lot about Roma Dunes saying, I should have an offensive lineman that said Roma Dunes, they all should have this rid of that. Here's the thing. When you're Ryan Polls in the Chicago Bears, you're trying to catch up with the Joneses. You want to be able to have potent explosive offenses, whether that's running the football, as utilizing its height and getting down to it. The point is that you want to have an offense that can deliver. The defense, for the most part, for years has always been solid, always been productive, being able to get turnovers, getting sacks, all these things. But you don't want to be behind offensively. You're not beating teams nine to six anymore, Cap. So I understand Polls and his philosophy of trying to get more offense in there. Having Kean Allen in there and Roma Dunes in there and DJ Moore and Cole Comette. That's important. Yes, he left a lot on the off the table when it comes to the offensive line. But when you see the Lions yesterday, when you see even Malik Willis come in there and get the job done for the Packers offensively, which we've seen before, when we see what's happening with the Minnesota Vikings with Sam Darnold, you know, that glad it comes from it comes from defense, but also comes from offense to putting points on the board. So you want to supply the rookie, which is much talent as possible to get points on the board. Okay, but I tell you one thing. The Bears lost a week ago to the Colts a little over a week ago. Because they threw the ball 56 times, right? 56, sack for 52 attempted passes. Yeah. Okay. The Lions completed 18 of 18. That's all they threw the ball. And they scored 42 points 18 for 18. It's never happened in the history of the sport. And if you go to the box score and you look how they ran the ball because they have built any elite offensive line, 14 carries for Jameer Gibbs, 12 carries for David Montgomery. They carried the ball total as a team 28 times for 116. Gough 18 for 18 for 292 and two touchdowns. His passer rating was 155.8. Me crazy numbers, right? But they didn't have to air it out all day long, 50 sometimes. They did not. They ran the football effectively. They did. You had, who lost last night? Gino Smith, he threw the ball 56 times. Yeah. So yes, you have to be able to pass the football. But if you can't run it effectively in the National Football League, your season's over. When it comes to the efficiency of the Detroit Lions and what Gough was able to do being Mr. Perfect yesterday with 18 for 18. Kurt Hennig. So, cap, here's what very good. Here's what stands out though. You know where the bears are in the hierarchy of the NFC North? Your fourth as a head coach. Your fourth at the quarterback position. At this point in time, we got just, let it play out with Caleb Williams and you can make a determination of love versus Caleb at that time. I'm just talking about where we are right now. My fourth is head coach, fourth offensive coordinator, fourth as a quarterback position. Your last. But you're trying to build and get better every game so that way you can have a season where you could say, yeah, the bears are definitely contenders in the NFC North. But you've got to get there first. The reason why that the Lions look so good offensively is because they're armed with experience and talent and a way of playing the game, the way they ran the football cap, we always talk about running the football a lot. The way the Lions run it though, they run it with a ruthless aggression. They're trying to go through you. You remember David Montgomery in the Bears uniform? He carried the football like it was going to be his last carry. I mean, that's how he ran the football, like trying to put his helmet through you for three yards or six yards. That's how the Lions do it. Watching that game yesterday, I'm like, man, we run the football, but we don't run it like the Lions run it with Gibbs and Montgomery. It's the way they do it cap. They're doing it for a purpose. Like, we're going to go through you to get that first down. And you love that kind of meat and potatoes football because while that's happening, golf is able to connect to all the receivers. He talked to the loportas and the Williams and all these other guys. I also know, I don't remember how Shea felt about it. I know there were other people, Carmen York and others, they were stunned that the Lions took Jamere Gibbs 12th overall. Because you already had it right back. You already have David Montgomery. What are you doing taking a top 12 pick and putting it back? I just heard him recently talk about. He said that was the guy identified his speed and his ability to be a game breaker could put us over the top. And that's why he took him. Boy, that guy looks good. Holy cow. He's trying to win a Super Bowl, man. I am not and never have been a jealous sports fan cap. Because your dance would rung ya. When you are a Bears fan, Cubs fan, Sox fan, Bulls fan, Hawks fan, whatever, these are your guys. This is your team. And so when I look over and I see the Lions, I'm not jealous of the Lions. I know what I will say for the Bears. You still got a lot to work on. A lot more seasoning to be able to reach that level. The Lions are a hell of a football team. Vikings off to a great start. I'm just saying that you've admired him. You were on the ground floor of Dan Campbell. You were on the ground floor of Dan Campbell. You were on the ground floor. I liked him the day they hired him. You had the penny stock on Dan Campbell and the Lions. I got the grid hat at home. Doesn't have a Lions logo on it. But my wife is a proponent of the book GRIT, GRIT. And she took a seminar in GRIT. That's part of their culture at her company. And as I started to read the book and listen to lectures about it, Pete Carroll talked about when we interview a player before we draft him or trade or whatever, GRIT. We give a GRIT test because he said you can have all the ability in the world. If you don't have the GRIT, when times are tough, I don't care how much ability you have. You're going to lose. You're not going to get it done. You may have a little less talent, but you have GRIT. I go to post with you every time. And then I heard Dan Campbell talk about GRIT. And my teams are going to have GRIT. And when the chips are down, we'll come together. And I'm like, I like this dude. I love him. Is he the sharpest tool in this jet? Maybe not. A little too risky for some people. But man, oh man, does he get people fired up. I think that when you talk about GRIT, obviously you're talking about people like me and Jay Moore. We love GRITs. Correct. Shake. No. What? Good. Butter or no butter? What do you like? Do you like them a little butter? I'm a butter guy. Not grits. We have GRIT. I tell you what, nothing like a good GRIT. We have it. There's no question about it. My cousin Vinny. We love GRIT. What's in a GRIT? My cousin Vinny. You know, when it comes to searching food, if it's good, you don't ask. Obviously, if you see me, I'm not that curious. Then how many GRITs? And I don't even know the difference. Like the harmony in the regular GRIT. No idea. I've never had those magic GRITs. How do you cook your GRITs? You like them regular creamy or al denting? Just regular, I guess. Regular. Instinct GRITs? No self-respecting. Suddenly, I use those Instinct GRITs. I take pride in my GRITs. So, Mr. Tipton, how could it take you five minutes to cook your GRITs when it takes the entire GRIT eating world 20 minutes? Were these magic GRITs? I mean, did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack? His beans sold beans? You have Jacks, Your Honor. The objection is sustained. Are you sure about that five minutes? No other question. That's one of my all-time favorites. And that's why the Lions have the GRITs. And the Lions have GRITs. So, I saw the hat on line one day. I'm like, I'm buying that hat. It's a white hat with the Honolulu blue word. Yeah. GRIT. That's it. Just GRIT. Love it. Look, they're a more talented team than the Bears. Sure. 100%. Sure. Everyone laughed. Dude, Jared Goff. He's horrible. And they traded Matthew Stafford. And Jared Goff needed a fresh start. He went from living in Beverly Hills to Detroit, Michigan. Like, oh, God. Who does that? And he said, I love it here. Love it. Yeah. And he said, I wasn't sure what I got traded. And that city has backed him. We'll see if they win a Super Bowl. But they've built it the right way. Strong up front. That's right. They've got a solid, maybe unspectacular quarterback. Got it. A good defense. Maybe not as good as the Bears, but they had a good defense. That team can win it, man. Our division is the best in football. Hats off to them. And so, because you say that, Cap, let's do this. Shay, let's open the phone lines. 312-332-ESPN-3323776 is our telephone number. So, the Bears are two and two after the victory against L.A. Rams. At two and two, and with the NFC North looking this good, do you still believe the Bears can be a playoff team? Again, it's still early, but just based on what you've seen so far, does this look like a playoff team for you as far as the blue and gorgeous concern? Look at the rest of the vision. Now, look at the Bears. What do you think? Cap and Jay Hood, weekday morning 7 to 10. Cap and Jay Hood are back. Oh, Cap. They're all a big fan, man. Cap, we're okay. Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop. Watch out, fellas. All Chicago's home for sports. ESP and Chicago. ♪♪ We're hoping that you got the fever on this Tuesday morning on ESPN 1,000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with Cap. I'm Jay Hood. Shout out, no shot comes away eight o'clock. Still to come, this hour we'll talk about the complicated legacy of Pete Rose who passed away yesterday. Cap, it really does come in threes. People say that that's not true. You get a little Chris Kristofferson, a DeCambie Matumbo, and Pete Rose within 72 hours. It does come in threes, these celebrity deaths. I did not hear the Kristofferson news. Yeah. So, it really does. Yeah, DeCambie Matumbo, 59, brain cancer. Just awful. I'm going to support him today. I see wearing the DeCambie Matumbo Denver Nuggets shirt. Yeah, it's super cool. He deserves that. And then Pete was found by a family member on the ground. Apparently he had a heart attack, 83 years of age. He just did an autograph signing last week with Rick Flair. Yeah. And the other Cincinnati Reds, the Tony Perez's and all those guys. Eric Davis, baby. Yeah. So, do you put him in now? We'll discuss it coming up after 7.30 right here on ESPN 1000. Look forward to it. 312-332-ESPN-3323776, our phone number. Cap, we are still in the afterglow of the victory for the Bears against the Los Angeles Rams. And looking forward to the Bears in Carolina. Of course, our coverage all day on Sunday right here. On the home of the Bears, ESPN 1000. Some thoughts from Maddy Rufluis regarding the victory for the Bears. Just hard work. Just hard work. You know, it comes down to fundamentals, right? Alignment assignment, doing your thing the right way. And basic football. You know, and you got to move people. And the offense line did a really good job with that. Today, I thought the runners did a really good job with their demeanor in terms of the pad level and knocking the pile forward. I thought I saw that a lot today, which is good. You get those extra bonus yards. But again, it just comes down to hard work and being determined and being detailed. At two and two, and the NFC North looking this good, do you still believe that the Bears could be a playoff team? That's what we're talking about here this morning. 312-332-ESPN is our phone number. Guess who's on the phone lines, Cap. There he is. Southside Tito is with us on Cap and Jay Hood. Love it. Tito, good morning. Good morning, gentlemen. Good morning. The vodka king. What's up, baby? Nothing too much. Nothing too much. As for the Bears. I don't know, guys. I don't really see him doing it too much this year. Just a vision. I mean, I didn't see the Vikings coming out of nowhere like this. I really didn't. The Packers, still the Packers, and the lines last night looked very, very good. I think the Bears, they still got some work to do. I honestly still don't trust Flus. I mean, I get that defense. It's really good. But during the day, he's the head coach. So he's responsible for both sides of the ball. Agreed. Say what now? I agree 100% with you. Yeah. And Waldron, I mean, I'm taking my time with them right now. Caleb, honestly, at the end of the day, he doesn't worry me too much. The only thing that worries me about him is the deep ball accuracy. He didn't have that problem in college. So maybe eventually he'll figure it out. But other than that, like each game, he's definitely improving. But the play calling needs to change up. They got to get better at that. And I don't know about you guys, but DJ Moore, his effort has been lackluster lately. Like it's just, I don't know what's going on. I understand he's frustrated, but... No, you know, I don't think that's it. I think you're frustrated at the offense. Hold on a second. I don't want you to put your frustrations on DJ Moore. Because if you don't listen to me, listen to Cap, DJ Moore is not frustrated about the Chicago Bears. He's just not. He's not. I actually just interviewed him. He's not at all. He said, "I want to get to the playoffs, man." That was his quote. He goes, "I've been in the league seven years. I've never played a playoff game in my life. I want the playoffs, whatever it takes to get there." All right, Tito, we appreciate the telephone call. But that's not what's happening. See, this happens all the time, Cap. You get frustrated with a player by watching the game on TV and you think that the player is frustrated as well. Correct. That's how you feel. We're not going to tell you how to fan. But if you talk to DJ Moore, he believes in this quarterback. He believes in the offense and just wants to win. That's what they all do. Correct. He said, "I just want it faster. I just want it. We got to develop chemistry and I want it to come quicker." And as far as I'm concerned as a Bears fan cap, I'm not going to go back on my one loss record. I had the Bears in the playoffs sneaking into the wildcard at 9-8. And if 9-8's not good enough to get to the playoffs, then so be it, looking at the conference. But just because the Vikings off to a great start and what we laid out about the Lions and Packers, I can't go backwards on the Bears, they just had to play better. 2-1-2 is fine. Hey, the Packers are 2-1-2. So just keep stacking wins. You got to get to what I know this week. Caroline is coming in. That's a team you should beat in your building. Absolutely. Get the 3-2. Then you'll worry about Jacksonville after that. Another one. Yeah, and I don't think Jacksonville is going to go 0-17. They're going to beat somebody. They got a $266 million quarterback. I mean, there is talent down there. They had Houston beat till the very end. So, again, just get to 1-0 this week. That's the only thing you could control. Kat, when I look at the Bears and the Lions, or I look at the Bears and the Minnesota Vikings, especially as of late, I just look at it if you're the Bears or if you're Caleb Williams, you got something to strive for. It's supposed to look like that. The operations supposed to look like that. Now turn the ball over as much. You run the football effectively. The offensive lines open up holes, which I saw yesterday from the Lions yesterday. So I think that is for the team to say, we're good. But look at that. That's something to strive for. Agreed. You know what bothers me? No. It doesn't bother me because I don't let that stuff bother me. What's that? It's the right word. It makes me shake my head. I'm looking at all these. And you know what I think of Twitter. It's a great place to express opinion on that. But it's also where idiots go to play. And I had all these people yesterday going, "Who cares? They beat the Rams. They're terrible. That win means nothing." Really? Because they just beat the 49ers. And any win in the National Football League, any win, is a good win. You've got to W. You've got to two and two. Now get to one and O this week. That's the only thing you can control. Quit worrying about, "Oh my God, if we lose to this game." And then Jackson was going to beat somebody. And then we've got to buy it all. So we come out. Oh my God, we haven't even played the division. And the next thing you know, you're twisted in a pretzel. Just worry about this week. That's it. Get better. You know why stuff like that when I read that? Why ignore it? You know why I do? Because imagine the Bears lose against the Rams. Right. Not a four alarm fire. Oh God, if it was one and three and they lost, people would be like, "What's going on? Who's the new coach?" That's what it would have been. Yeah. Again, the NFL is not trying to figure out your positioning for the college football playoff. Correct. Well, that wasn't an impressive victory. So we can't put them number one this week. That's not what the NFL is. Correct. It's hard to win in this league. Hard. Ask the people at Gamble on this on a weekly basis. Is it hard to win the National Football League? Yeah. Do you think you got it? This is the team. Then it goes the other way. Like the Jets losing at home? If you said their defense is going to hold Denver to ten points. Yeah. Oh, that's a layup. Guess what? Not so much. Yeah. I don't... That's why I'm not concerned about comments like that. Because if the Bears will have lost against the Rams, now you're in a hole. Now you don't know who you are. Correct. But you're able to win against the Rams at home, and now you just move forward. You're two and two, like a lot of teams in the NFL, like Dallas, and Philadelphia, and Green Bay, and Atlanta, and the Saints. That's why this league's tough. There's a slew of teams that are two in San Francisco. All these teams are two and two, Cap. Because it's hard. Hard to win, man. Hard to win. And guess what? Yeah. The Lions are a better team. They've got more talent right now. They've got a veteran offensive line with three first. We don't play the Lions this week. Nope. We're not in the playoffs this week. Just beat the Panther. That's it. That's it. That's their focus. That should be our focus as fans. One play mentality. That's the only way I know how to fan. Maybe that's my coaching background. I can only control this play. The play that just happened. We'll talk about it in practice and fix what went wrong. But I can't change the outcome. That's right. I see Caleb ascending. Does that mean he will be perfect going for it? No, because no one is. To the ESPN Chicago app here is Derek in Brooklyn, New York on Cap and Jhood. Hey, D. Good morning. Yo, good morning Cap. How y'all doing, man? What's up, brother? What's up is that? I'm gonna answer this question. I'm gonna keep it real. You know I love them. You know I love my best. You know that. But I'm gonna say this. The offensive line. Listen, Braxton Jones. Just not good enough. He's not. Seven Jenkins. Always hurt, man. Always freaking hurt this guy. The sense of position. Not good enough. Right? Guard position. Like a turn style, man. Like the J train out here in Brooklyn, man. People hopping a turn style just over and over. Not any fit. And I'm honestly down there. I know my man over them. The right tackle. Yeah. All right. Listen, man. He's undisciplined, man. Too many penalties. Now he has the talent. But the talent is not showing up consistently because of the penalties. So to just to be honest with you, man, I wouldn't even want to make the playoffs and then have this guy get destroyed because the line is just not good enough. And I'm not gonna blame Ryan Pose. I'm gonna tell you why. I'm not gonna put the blame on him because of the simple fact that the whole team has so many holes. You just basically have to come in and say to yourself where I'm gonna start. And some people say, yeah, you supposed to start with the line, the defensive line and the offensive line because those are the trenches and this, that and the third. But some general managers may feel that the secondary is very important. Or the linebacker thing is very important. At the end of the day, you cannot knock that man from starting where he thought he needed to start to improve the team as far as starting with the draft picks with the secondary this and the third. So I'm gonna say that. You know, I love the team, want the team to do well, but we have to be honest with ourselves. And one more thing about this Twitter rant that you were just talking about. We cannot, we're not gonna say sorry about who's on our schedule. And we're not gonna say sorry about who's hurt on the opponent's team. Yeah. Okay. Two good in the two or whatever his name is, the Cooper Cup, they wasn't there. That's not our problem. That's not our fault. We play who's on the field and if we dominate, who's on the field, we dominate. That's bottom line, man. Listen, go Bears, love you guys. Shout out to my man, George, and Glyph you. Peace out, I'm going, man. You're the best, Derek. I love that guy's passion, man. He's so good. He's on it. He's on it. Yeah. Well, they didn't even have to play, pooping and cool. So, so what? Just play the Panther this week. I don't give it to any Dalton, Bryce Young, or Shay at quarterback. Find a way to win. The hit king has passed away. We talk about it next on Captain J. Hood. Some of the great moments of the great Pete Rose, right here on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago actors, hoping that you're going to have a great Tuesday. As we have Sean, no shot coming your way to eight o'clock. There he is, Cat Pete Rose, who passed away at the age of 83 yesterday. 3,500 62 games over 5-15,000 played appearances. National League hit a streak of 44. 44 games in a row getting the base hit. That's just amazing. And of course the hit king is no longer with us. Yep. Jesse had a great story on social. And if you saw it where he went to the game where I guess Pete could've broken the record. It was his dad's favorite player. And then the game was going to go to extra innings. His dad's like, "We got to get out of here." And they left even though Pete could get the record. And he didn't. And then he broke it at home. So they got to see the game and didn't miss the record. And Jesse still has the ticket stuff. Before we talk about Pete Rose after his career was over, we should talk about who Pete Rose was, especially for our younger listeners that did not see Pete Rose play. You know, there was a time in this country cap that baseball was the lead. That was the number one sport in this country where baseball and boxing were at the top. And football was secondary down the line. I know it's hard to believe in 2024, but it was the case that everyone could not wait to turn on a baseball game or go to a baseball game, especially if there's greats there involved. But Pete Rose, he was the embodiment of how to hustle in Major League Baseball. You know, as simple as drawing a walk or getting hit by a pitch and him sprinting the first base. I know that sounds like, "Why would he sprint for it to walk?" Right? He sprinted the first base cap. Why he did that is because he wanted to make sure his legs were ready to steal second base. That's why he ran the first base. Correct. You think about all these timely hits. And having a base hit, 44 games in a row. National League streak. And being the all-time hit king cap, he was really the embodiment of baseball. The face of baseball because of his hustle. He was called Charlie Hustle for a reason because he always tried to do more than what normal ball players would do. It's not because he was this gifted, athletic freak. It's just because he wanted to. And we say this all the time about how hustle and defense and hitting the ball is all about one-two. He wanted to. Over and over again. Remember when he ran into Ray Fossey in the All-Star game? I think the hit was by Jim Hickman of the Cubs. And he came barreling around third. It's an All-Star game. Yeah. Most guys just, you know, run in, light little slide or stand up. He barreled him over to win the game. And Ray Fossey was never the same from that hit. Correct. And it bothered him. And Pete was like, "Hey man, I played the game one way. I played a win. Period. I don't care if it's an All-Star game. X, Abish, you get whatever it is. I'm going to play hard. Remember when he moved to first base, I think in Philly, he started playing first base. And when he would catch the ball for the third out, he'd spike it into the ground. Yeah, into the F turf. And then catch the infield ball for the next inning. And sprint into the dugout. I loved it. He just did. And I know maybe for the opposition, he was not well liked. In 2024 years, that sounds like an a-hole. But this is who he was, Cap. Yep. Because he wanted to do more than what the other, his teammates were doing more than the opposition. Because I'm sure the opposition, whether it was the Dodgers or Montreal, wherever he played, they had to look at this guy's like, "What's with this guy?" He just wanted to do more. Yeah. I'm telling you, that was Waddles guy, man. We had him on down the dial years ago. I mean, Tommy's been with Sylvie, what, 17 years? So this is 20 years ago, we had Pete on. And Tommy was like a kid in a candy store. Oh my God. Pete's like, "Tommy, I used to watch you play all the time." And I would bust Tommy and go, "Yeah, he had the over in your game and you always let him know." But he loved Tom and Tom loved him. And it was super cool. He was unfortunately a pariah to some in the game. Yeah. His ban is a lifetime ban. His lifetime's over. So the ban should be lifted. That dude should be in the freaking Hall of Fame in the next class. What's that grown for, Shay? I guess that all depends on how Commissioner Manfred looks at this. Because we have to look at 1989 for those that don't remember or were not around. He was banned from baseball by Commissioner Bart Giamatti in 1989. Shortly after that, the commissioner died. Correct. Interesting. A few months later. They said the stress Paul Giamatti, the actor, his son, has said the stress of the Pete Rose thing killed his death. Think about that. Yeah. So I think that from this standpoint, let's talk about from this standpoint, yes, he did bet on baseball. He bet on sports. He denied he bet on baseball and sports. And then came back around because he had a book to sell. They said, yeah, I did bet. Right. But I never bet against my team. I only bet on my team. The lies still permeate though in 2024 cap that he denied it. But I want to be able to acknowledge this. I think we should all acknowledge that he was made a pariah by Major League Baseball. The very entities that ultimately embraced his behavior. Look at draft Kings. Look at all these other places now where you could bet on baseball and there's been players suspended from betting on baseball still. But yes, it was illegal at the time. But look where we are now. Where he could bet on everything. Correct. Correct. It's and we can't let Pete in. He was gambling. By the way, this segment brought to you by draft King. So and again, I don't think Shay agrees because I heard the thrown in there. His ban was a lifetime ban. His lifetime is over. No, I'm fine. I just thought it was a funny way of saying it. Oh, I thought you disagreed. Felt a little harsh the day. His lifetime is over. Get him in. So it's a fact. He died. He's taking a dirt nap. It is what it is, man. He was 83. He's gone. So unfortunate that if he gets in, he'll never get to see it. And be there. And give a great speed that won't happen. But he belongs in the Hall of Fame. At some point, it will happen. And I don't think it's going to happen in this regime. I do not. I think the, I've always said this about the all-time greats. Whether it's Clemens, whether it's Bonds, whether it's Rose. There's going to be a younger commissioner in there that's going to look at this. And they'll be a committee and they say, look at this. Let's see. Our hit king, our home run guy and our saw young award winner. Our great saw young award. Is that in the Hall of Fame? However you want to look at those guys, whether it's Rose or Bonds or Clemens, they weren't great in the game. They were great. They were attractions. They were must see and they're not in the Hall of Fame. All I'm telling you is, Cap, is that I don't think that Rob Manford has a stomach for this to be able to make that move. I don't. I've always thought that those guys deserve to be able to be in the Hall of Fame and to be able to tell the story of why they were not in the Hall of Fame. It should be on the plaque. It should be. It should be because the whole thing is a museum. The Hall of Fame is a museum. So in the museum, you're supposed to learn things, right? So you look. So tell the story. Tell the story of Pete Rose. Okay. But what do you say to the guy that did not take performance enhancing drugs and he hit 29 home runs on average? Had he taken the juice? Maybe he hits 40 and he's a Hall of Famer. And he says, "Hang on a second. I did it the right way. I did it. Played clean." And those dudes didn't. And you're going to reward them and take it out on me? How is that fair? Well, unfortunately for the Hall of Fame, Cap, it's a lot of picking shoes and a lot of, "Did you treat me well if you're a writer?" There are guys that did take steroids, that same era that's in the Hall of Fame. But because they were good guys, they get into the Hall of Fame. I think that's clear. That's why we've kind of removed this from the conversation. Every time the Hall of Fame ballast comes up because it's a joke. It's an absolute joke. There are people that had a syringe in their ass that is in the Hall of Fame. But because they were good to the writers, you know what? He deserves to get in. It's part of the era. If you try it once, if you try it 100 times, it was part of the era. And you blame the players association and you blame the players. All of it for allowing it to happen. It was just part of an era. And you tell that story in the museum as well. Pete Rose will be in the Hall of Fame. I just don't know when. And you say it was a shame that he didn't get a chance to see it. Well, on top of lying, then saying that you never bet against your team. I mean, the bottom line is you said that you never bet on baseball. You did? Right. You did bet on baseball. And he eventually admitted it. Imagine that. Now, moving forward to Mark Maguire, who said that, yeah, I took steroids still around the game, Cap. Still around the game. No one is ex exiling Mark Maguire away from the game. Are they? Maguire has been a hitting coach and around the Cardinals. Correct. The Dodgers, I want to say, is a hitting coach at one point in time? I admit it. I took steroids. All right, Mark. I understand, man. It was the time. Come back in the game. Right. But he didn't lie about it, Cap. He might have denied the Androstein Dione at the time. Correct. But then he's like, you know what? I took it. He fell in the sword. He did. Do you see who was in town over the weekend for the first time in a decade? Sammy Sosa. Sammy was at Club 400 up in, I believe it's in Kerry. They do a great job up at Club 400. Stu McVicker and his crew. They worked Joe Johnson from obvious shirts. They worked tirelessly to make this happen. And I saw some of the videos on Sunday morning. There he is. Sammy. Walking in and all these fans there. I mean, it was a cool thing. Super cool. Look different from last time I saw him. 312-332-ESPN-332-3776. His art's elephant. His son. Oh, is that what it is? Really? Oh, yeah. Is that all he needs? A little son. Is that what it is? I don't know. I don't know. Very interesting. Sammy Sosa coming back. Can we get Tom Ricketts back on so I can convince him again about Sammy? He won't. Will he come back on because I asked a question? He just won't answer that question. Again. Let's put him back on. I'm going to ask him again. Let's get Tom back a week. Why did we talk to him two years ago? Probably. Okay. Let's get him back on, Shay. I'm trying. He's not coming. On our show? He's probably not coming on. Because of me? He's not going to answer that question. He's just, there's no interest in engaging him. Oh, I'm not going to put that out there front. You know, I put that in the back of the questions. Right. He's done talking about it. That's what I did, Tom. That's fine. I'm going to ask him again. Because he needs to answer to this nonsense with the Chicago Cubs. So, of course, you know me. I'll back door the question. Tell me before we let you go. This whole Sammy Sosa thing. Haven't you had enough? He's going to go. You have a good day, John. He's got to say, as he told me, he says, "I'll take it under advisement." Right. It wasn't even a question. It was just like, "Tom, that's enough." Right. And then they look on Cap's face. I told you. That's exactly right. It's fine. I'm going to ask him, though. Sam should be back in the fold. Get him before Ryzerof gets him. One, two, three, two, three, two, three, two, three, two, three, seven. No shot. Color commentator soon. Oh, yeah. Panther. You must statue. Panther. That was his nickname back in the day. The Panther. The Panther. Cap, it'll be a statue out in the left field. And it'll be him missing the cut-off man. The statue. Throwing in the third base dugout. Yeah, ball going way up over the cut-off man's head. That would be the statue. Sammy, we look at you back up. You were the Panther. Pick the gold chains on the bronze. Skinny. Yeah. All is great. The Panther. That drives them nuts when they saw them. These 80 pounds heavier. Bangin' home runs everywhere. Yeah. Captain Jay Hood, weekday morning, seven to ten. Lewis is on the road on Captain Jay Hood. Lewis, good morning. Hey, good morning, guys. What's up? Hey, real sad to hear about Pete Rose. And I can't but just say I agree with you. I mean, it's incredibly hypocritical for not only Earth, for the MLB to not only like you sponsored by betting or by sports books, but also sending a team to Vegas. Come on. And that's pretty much the gambling capital of the world. Again, Lewis, let's acknowledge that he was made a pariah by the very entities that ultimately embraced his behavior. Imagine if you say Pete, let's get you in the Hall of Fame. And also, can you be the spokesperson for gambling and baseball? Yeah, I mean, it's, I understand the reasoning, but at this point, the reason it's thrown out the window. The main reason I called is, and I don't know if like you're even going to consider talking about the football anymore. That real, the pressing thing about Pete Rose. Lewis, you called, whatever you want to talk about, go right ahead. I think that every team in the NFC North is good enough to make the playoffs. I know it might be crazy. The pack has made it in at nine and eight. I think it's 100% doable. We're going to need some help from the other divisions that have not, not having great second place teams. I know the Seahawks aren't, aren't to exactly the worst, but then again, the Lions kick the, you know, what out of them. So, you know, let's see. I will say, Tito said something. I know that you disagreed because of what DJ Morrison saying. I was watching the L 22 last night and I can't, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count how many plays DJ Moore was dogging it. Like, even if Lewis talks about his hits principle, go watch the L 22 and just watch DJ Moore, whenever he doesn't get the ball, he's jogging. Not looking for someone to block. He's not trying to block. He's not doing anything. In fact, that played on the right sideline. He, I know he doesn't expect to get the ball and it results in an overthrow, but you have to run as if you're going to get the ball every time, especially if that's how you win. You want to have grit. That's not having grit. Now, lastly, I kind of broke my promise yesterday, but you know what? Eddie on the North, I'm going to make up for it. Eddie on the North side, the steam's getting better. And like I said, I think we're going to the playoffs. Have fun. Love it. Have a great day, Lewis. Do you see that in DJ Moore when you watch the L 22? The L 22 is dropping today. So I'm going to watch the L 22 this afternoon. That's my plan. And I'm just going to sit down and be honest. You know me. I'll just be honest. The tape never lies. Network. That's what our friends fill in shame top. The tape will never lie. Put it on. What do you see? Shay? I thought in the first half I saw a lot of that from DJ. Like effort was not great. And second half was a totally different DJ Moore. He came out blocking his ass off on screens for Keenan Allen. I think the idea that he was never blocking for anybody was flawed. He had a highlight reel blocking for Keenan Allen and caught the touchdown. So I get it. If you want to be kind of disappointed with what DJ was until the second half on Sunday. But I'm hoping we get more of the actual DJ Moore we've seen for seven years and in the second half against the Rams than the first part of this season. The throw by Caleb was sensational. I mean sensational on the TD at DJ. If you go back and watch the L 22, I know Shay, you posted yesterday, that clip. I mean he's got like two inches to fit the ball in there and he gets it there. DJ made a hell of a catch, secured it and tapped the feet down on the back of the end zone. So it was awesome. I'll put the all 22 on. As soon as it drops, I'll click in here in the game pass and see if it's up yet. And watch a little at the break. But I don't question that dude's effort. I don't. I don't either. We'll see. You know, I'd also say put a spotlight on other receivers. They're not getting the ball also when you know it's a running play. Are they jogging too? Is that a DJ Moore issue? Is that just a national football issue? Because if you're not getting the ball, you got to run a certain level. I mean, I'm just saying like everything's not going to be perfect for every play. That's all I'm saying. And I look forward to seeing what that looks like, but that way. Jay and Lockport on Captain Jay Hood. Jay, good morning. Good morning, brother. How you doing, man? Subjay. I'm all right. What's going on? Hey, listen, I just want to let people know. And well, in my humble opinion, as a Cubs man, by the way, Pete Rose is a nuisance. I don't think we're just gambling. They got them banned or whatever. Sorry for coughing. Sorry. Listen to this list. Just listen. All right, buddy? Okay. Yeah. I'm smoking. He cheated. He cheated. He gets some hits. He lost our game. He sold drugs. He sold fake autographs, had a fair with a minor or a relationship, assaulted an umpire, and went to prison in 1990. It's not just gambling. You know, how are you going to make that man who smokes me? How do you cheat to get hits? I don't know exactly. If you want me to go into it, I can, you know, can go into it and I'll call you back, bro. I promise you in like 20 minutes, you know, I knew, but I forgot because it's been so long. You know, but all of this stuff is true. If you look into it, you know, it's nothing. He didn't admit himself. Well, if it's not, if you don't drug use J and we preach the telephone call, hope that cough clears up. Yeah. I would say. I want to put the cigarette down, Jay. Maybe some formula 44d. Maybe that could help. Didn't he say I was smoking? Yeah. Yeah. Put the cigarette down. You all right? Okay. Wow. Like I never, this is a totally off topic, but I was going to say like, you tell me you smoke a joint. You're going to get high. Okay. There's a purpose to it. Whether it's good or bad. You have a purpose. Sure. What does the cigarette do for you? I don't get it. Spoken like a guy who's never ripped a heater. You just don't understand. I've tasted one like that is one like a cigarette and I'm like, this is horrible. Like I don't get it. You got to tell people how to butt now? I'm not telling them what to do. They get their walk over by a pack of squares. I don't care. That's all up to them. I just, I'd like to know what the attraction is. I've never been a cigarette guy either though. Right. I don't get what the attraction of it is. You're not getting a buzz off it. Yeah, you do. You get a little buzz right at the start and then you build the tolerance up quickly. And before you know it, you're hooked. Yeah. And the buzz is gone. Yeah. But at the start, there is a little buzz. Your clothes smell. Who would want to like, I dated a girl? My wife made me quit smoking cigarettes. And good for her. She's right. And I kissed her and I'm like, oh, this is horrible. It's like kissing an ashtray. Done. I'm out. Deal breaker. She was. Shout out no shot in two minutes on Captain J.
