A county-wide relief effort is underway to help western North Carolina following catastrophic damage from Hurricane Helene. Homes, businesses, roads and towns have been washed away. Rodney Cates, Director of Rockingham County Emergency Services, has been deployed to McDowell County to coordinate efforts. He'll have a report Wednesday morning on Rocco Live on Mike Moore Media. The Rockingham County Swiftwater Rescue Team, a telecommunications response task force, a light tower and generators have been sent. Members of the Eden Rescue Squad have been in Mitchell County since Saturday. They're expected to return home Thursday. God's pit crew has sent teams to North Carolina and Georgia. Also, I'll be talking to them on Rocco Live in the morning. In addition to billions of dollars in destruction, 600 people are reported missing in Buncombe County. More than 60 search, rescue and recovery teams are spread throughout that area. More than 135 have died from Florida to Ohio. Back here at home, donations are being accepted for non-perishable food, water, blankets, baby supplies and other essentials. There are drop-off locations across Rockingham County. All public libraries and municipal buildings in Eden, Stoneville, Madison, Mayadan and Reedsville end at the county maintenance warehouse. Dog and cat food, dried or canned, water, cat litter and cleaning supplies can be left at the animal shelter. Floyd Missionary Baptist and other churches are assisting in Avery County. A group went to Boone yesterday. Items can be left at Debbie's Restaurant. Government agencies, organizations and businesses are using semi-trucks, helicopters, military planes and mules to haul in supplies, food and water. A trainer at Mountain Mue Packer Ranch in Hope County says a mule can carry 200 pounds of supplies. FEMA, the federal emergency management agency, has opened 30 shelters and housing more than 1,000 people currently. 25 trailer loads of meals and 60 trailer loads of water has been delivered but is being rationed.
