Independent health system, expert care here, and I'm excited because every week we will feature another medical professional and looking forward to it as a board of trustee member to introduce you to some incredible people here in our hometown. When we start with Dr. Carol Fox, Chief Medical Officer at Independence Health System, Dr. Good morning. Good morning, Larry. How are you? I'm doing well. You know how we are. We're slow for change and so we'll call this Independence Health System 101 so that people can learn more about the newest health care system here in Western Pennsylvania. We dial back to May of 2023, the system was created by bringing two great organizations together, right? Yes, absolutely. The legacy Butler Health System and the legacy Excella Health came together to create a system that really has a lot of depth and breadth that provides a wide variety of services that are so important for our patients and important for them to get close to home. Yeah, and I know people are always looking for high-quality low-cost care with the kind of just family touch and when you talk about family, so this is the third largest system in Western Pennsylvania, nearly 1,000 beds, 7,300 employees, 1,000 physicians and practitioners serving about three quarters of a million people. So let's talk about the hospitals and step through which hospitals are involved. Sure, so we have Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler County, Clarian Hospital in Clarian County and then in Westmoreland Hospital there are three facilities, Frick, Latrobe and Westmoreland Hospitals and each of them has over a century plus of history serving the communities in which they are placed. And I know there was great thought that went into selecting Independence Health System expert care here, so kind of elaborate on what that means for patients around the region. Well, really, what it means is we offer a very broad scope of services and many, many clinical programs that are locally based so people can get care close to home. The care is locally controlled and it's important to underscore that we have a commitment to provide the highest level of care that really is centered in the community. What are the clinical strengths of Independence Health System? Oh my goodness, we have just a spectrum of sophisticated services that some would call tertiary care particularly in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, women's health, orthopedics, sports medicine, neurology and we do have a current emphasis on the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, emergency medicine, behavioral health and an extensive primary care network and in fact we have several primary care residency programs that are designed to continue to place well trained individuals into our communities. And again, to emphasize the importance of this merger between the Butler Health System and Excel and now Independence Health System collectively, they thought process to make both stronger, correct? Absolutely. You know, we're stronger together, we're able to share best practices, in some instances sometimes physicians will go to one area or the other so that folks can get that great care right in their hometown. And recently been recognized for that nationally too. Yeah, absolutely, you know, there's been a number of accolades from U.S. News and World Report, health grades, Newsweek, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, they're really too numerous to name them all, but these are not just somebody saying I think somebody's great. These are organizations that use objective criteria to compare us to others and we've done really well which is a testament to the folks who work for us and it's really because they want to serve their communities. And again, there are five hospitals, Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe and West Portland that are part of this Independence Health System expert care here, Dr. Carol Fox, Chief Medical Officer, you have a lot of responsibility in your role doc and I believe in great hands with you. Well, thank you Larry, I appreciate that very much. All right, and we'll see you soon. Thanks so much for your time at this morning, Doc. Thank you and thanks for having me.
