Did you agree? Well, it's a deep and meaningful race It's true We should study on a deep and meaningful kick-off Our preview episode In years got by, we read our preview episode The Week of the Race But we came to feel that it was just too busy And there's too much stuff going on in the world So we thought we'd get in, get it done the week before And get it rolling for everyone to enjoy whether They're driving to the track or driving into state Or sitting at home or on the bus or on the train Or wherever you're going It's a hell little hot take of the Bathurst 1000 But we don't like to do it like everybody else We don't like to just sit there And pour over the teams and the drivers And who's going to do well? We'll do a bit of that But we want to give you the rounded Bathurst 1000 experience About some of the other stuff that's going on On the track, off the track And around the place I think that's a fair play We'd like to be a bit 360 A bit 360 Without Robbo or without Jared Or Ben Eichen Or whoever the other guy is I was going to say It depends on which state you're in Whether you're an AFL or an NRL 360 follower But we wanted to have a look at it from all angles I've got a feeling I've just got this feeling going to Bathurst issue for the 1000 That by and large I mean last year let's face it That race was a dud It was probably the most boring flat Bathurst 1000 In living memory Something that became very apparent Probably around a third race distance And it only got worse from there Yeah, it didn't even plateau It dropped away There was a hint of excitement Courtesy of Triple 8's gear shift tail Amounts, but apart from that Not much else So this year For those who perhaps haven't caught up with it So the issue last year With the soft tire and everyone not wanting to push very hard To keep their tires under their car That's gone Because there's been a change to the harder compound tire So that should make that part go away Now we have this Situation before Bathurst Of a last minute rush from Ford teams And the Ford engine provider Motorsport powertrain Through DJR To get GT3 spec crankshafts Into these engines after a wake of issues At sand out in the race And at the ride day On the Monday afterwards Now Does this take you back a little bit to back in the day When was the last time we went to a Bathurst 1000 Where there was a reliability question mark Over cars in the race I reckon you've got to go Group Aura To really end Maybe even though super touring races Because they were deemed to be brittle Because they were not built for endurance racing whatsoever Particularly the ones that came from the UK But what year was it with the Commodore's at Bathurst Where there were all the push rod Or valve spring concerns On the way in That was Group Aura I think that was a couple of different times For a few years Well there was a couple of Vav spring years Obviously turned out to be one for Glen Seton But then I think the same year There was a couple of customer Perkins cars That had drummers The LKR car And it was traced back to the metal that was sourced For those parts Because it went back to It was around the same time the COVID earthquake But the point being that For so many years the reliability issues at Bathurst were a bigger concern And even then it wasn't necessarily manufacturer related No it was just team preparation The large percentage of reasons for cars retiring In the last 15-20 years at Bathurst Crashes rather than mechanical breakdowns Or engines, gearboxes, drive lines Because the stuffs been so tried and tested So I can't remember a time For a long time That we've had genuine question marks Because the question is It's sounding like they're not going to have Enough of these new cranks for all the forwards For all the engines Somewhere between Some of the cars and all of the cars We're not 100% sure exactly how many that works out too And if they do have them for all the cars Probably won't have enough for all the spare engines in the trend That's where I was going with it That's the next part to the puzzles So genuine question mark there Over that whole thing as we record this And how that's going to play out Could be a massive factor in who does Or doesn't have a chance to win And then you have... Stop and just think about it from this point of view They've got a current championship contention for it Chaz Moss, the two-time Bathurst winner Is in the game I mean he has a good Bathurst and the Bulls have a bad Bathurst He's well in the game Well you can guarantee Which one of the forwards is going to have one of the new Speck is saying it's a different speck It's slightly incorrect It's the same speck It's just a different part Yeah, different versions of the same thing Although there is going to be effectively a speck Change between the Chevy's and the Mustangs With all the final results from all the AVL dyno Testing in the States Those tweaks are playing out as we're talking A lot of our verification runs A lot of our readers are asking followers asking What is the result of the AVL testing And what is going to happen? That's still to play out And it's one of those things where I think once we get to the trail I mean last year it was really clear That Ford weren't in the race They were making up the numbers The same as they did in '93 As you might remember The Commodore's were the stronger car From the mid-season part Where they got that updated aero package And if you were in a Ford last year You were in the race but you weren't in the race First in class really You were just driving around Hoping to pick up the pieces really Which obviously Anton Di Pasquale and Tony Del Berto To finish third last year It was a phenomenal performance All things considered We are generally going to a race now With a lot of question marks Over particularly the forward side of the fence So really interesting Because it's not the norm This time of year where we are questioning Reliability of cars Before we've even got to the race Even before we've got cars on track For first practice It's interesting because last year The whole issue of Triple 8's Gishift Tower Mounds breaking on two out of their three cars And also did break on the winning car But not enough for it to cause a failure That's a reliability issue That I don't think anyone would have Ever seen to have the level of impact It did on the race This time around And that was any year where As you said Everyone was cruising around to a lap time So as not to destroy the tyres Now they're going back on the hard tyres They can drive Much closer to flat out over the course of a stint Be curious to see whether there's anything else Unusual that crops up on a reliability front Beyond the known Ford engine issue It is Bathurst so Who knows anything's possible This year we've got 26 cars Two wild cars 24 regulars 52 drivers A couple of rookies In the third fact I think it's six 1,000 rookies this year Two Aarons driving together Which has to be your first A lot of Cameron's in the field Where the first able sign is There is so many There is guaranteed Snakes and Ladders danger For Crompton and Skafe Next weekend Because it's going to be What if you get to the point Where you have Aaron Cameron Who's sharing with Aaron Love They're battling Cameron McLeod Oh there's going to be Cameron Cameron Crick with them And Cameron Crick He's from Cameron Hill Is Cameron McConville making a comeback Next weekend and we don't know about it That's a question for Cameron Question for Shane after this Is the record for The most drivers with the same name in one field We should have asked him that beforehand But nevertheless I guess we've got to look at Who's who in the zoo And rather than doing car by car Let's go just look at team by team But I said on SCN radio At the very end in the sign off What was the You know, Maddie White asked me What's my main thoughts Rolling into Bathurst It's beat the Bulls Because I mean Ten time winners Of the Great Race More than any other team They won their tenth Last year They dot the I's They cross the T's Their process is the best They think ahead better Than I think any other team By a long way They won the last endurance race Obviously with Will Brown Scott Pie Those two cars The two clear favourites In my mind Heading up there Next weekend That said They've dominated the Sandown in Diro for so long That every time that happens It's well Look out for them at Bathurst It doesn't always happen For them at Bathurst It's true It's true It doesn't flow on Does it necessarily No And some of the times Where it does flow on And they do have the fastest cars That it managed They managed to snatch defeat From the jaws of victory I mean you think of 2013 Where Jamie Winco came back from Basically a lap down Without a safety car To win the Sandown 500 Or a wave by Or a wave by And again Was strong at Bathurst But didn't win the race 2014 again Dominated the Sandown 500 Went to Bathurst Had a strong car Didn't win the race Crashing qualifying Didn't win the race Let it Let it the start of the last lap It didn't win the race There are a lot of instances Of triple-8s The things that make triple-8 Great at Sandown Aren't as big an advantage When you head to the mountain And there's the possibility there That other teams can apply Bit more pressure To triple-8 Than they could at Sandown And we've seen them crack A few times over the years True But we have seen them deliver More times than anybody else has It's true So Ten wins At the Bathurst 1000 for triple-8 Since 2006 The first win With Craig Lownds and Jamie Winco How many times in those ten wins Have they started from pole position? That's an excellent question I don't think it's many If any Zero Yeah They have never started from pole And won the race So let me go the other way How many times triple-8 Had pole for the Bathurst 1000 I don't think there are too many Instances of that either Three Yeah How many times have they won What have they done with those three? Not one, obviously Well, 2005 Lownds What's Linkage Leading going away Leading going away Yeah, broke the suspension Thirteen Second For Win Cup and Dumbrel And the other one was Sixteen Which is the Let-a-cross-a-line But Jamie did win the race He's let-a-cross-a-line Yeah He did not win the race As it turns out The babe was on It's a really interesting one That they have a fast car When it matters Someday Yeah They never get sucked in To the qualifying Grand Prix And that was the key thing To last year's race Where Shane Van Gisberg and Just didn't look like he was Quick, remotely quick enough All the way through the lead-up But that was so focused on Sunday They knew it didn't matter Where they started Because they were going to Come forward anyway The same will be the case Again this year So we've got no doubt I mean Jamie Win Cup looked Absolutely Like he'd not been away In the time that he drove the Brock Finney car Lots have been said about The co-drivers Not being able to start the race That's now a rule That rule does flow on to Bathurst It's the same as it was At the Sand air 500 I don't think Triple 8's going to Game with that Rule the same way they did With the wild car at Sand down Though Yeah that's right Which So Craig Lowndes is the Nominated primary driver In the super cheap car And Cooper Murray is the Nominated co-drivers So And we'll get on to that in Just a second But There's a really interesting Scenario here whereby The way that everyone thought That well if you just make all The main bloke start the race Then the way the race plays out Everyone does the same I don't think that's the case Because it's a long enough race That you can mix it up with Your drivers along the way Of course the end game is You want your main bloke in For the stints at the end And he's got to be at the start But how you use your co-drivers Gonna depend on who your Co-driver is So Triple 8 Are they going to be that Are they worried about Wingcup? He'll be fine Is Grove worried about Tanda? No There's a bunch that you'd be Not too sure about leaving All mate in there Let's get him out of that fight And conversely you look at Some of the guys that might End up buried down the field Like we saw at the Sandoun 500 Tickford left Thomas Randall In for an extra stint So he could take on All the co-drivers And make a bit of track position Tuller evering him Did a great job When he ended up against The main drivers Later in the race There is that level of flexibility There if you've got a good enough Co-driver And that's the key You've got to have a good enough Co-driver to be able To do that sort of thing So Craig Lance Cooper Murray's An interesting one And I actually I've seen that there's been a lot Of commentary around That super cheap got ignored At Sandoun I don't think they did it all I think they got a lot of coverage And from what I've heard Secondhand They were really happy With how their car was covered And how that all flowed I think they got the coverage That they warranted They were in the fight They ran well Young Cooper did a great job Lounsey was a solid anchor They got put They were on the TV screen More often Like than anyone's Probably giving their credit for I remember I remember the coverage Talking to CL Once he got out of the car At the end of his stints I remember seeing Cooper Murray flying across the turn To three chicane At the end of the race And yeah He was there We saw He was seen I thought the narrative That's been pushed by some About The coverage of the super cheap car I thought was out of line I actually thought that if you Compared to previous years They probably had more coverage Than other years And it's easy to throw stones When you don't have data Correct Data Perception is non sensible law Correct And I actually thought that The coverage of the Boost mobile car I mean Peter Attitude Actually came out on socials And gave Crompo an MS Congratulations and a thank you For the level of coverage So I'm not quite sure What other people say Sometimes about that stuff I think sometimes people say things Without the data And then a lot of people Jump on more to go Yeah that's right And you go Is it? I don't quite agree But anyway Everyone's entitled to their opinion That's how we run. So we know Triple A are in the fight Does Triple A put Cooper or Craig In the car to qualify at Bathurst? Well if you stick to their philosophy From Sandown Then Cooper's qualifying the car Can Cooper qualify In the top ten shoot out? Well that's an excellent question Now I say this though I think there is a major concern To put Cooper Murray in that car For qualifying at Bathurst He doesn't need that level Of pressure at the moment Yes he's got a drive sorted for next year That's a good thing He's got an error of us Which some people might have forgotten But let's not forget But what happened to Bathurst In here he crashed He's been fast up there But tore some gear up Yeah but the whole point Of this wild car program As they said at Sandown Is to give these young drivers Exposure to these moments To this kind of pressure Craig Lanz was saying Well we didn't know Prior to Sandown We didn't know how he would go In an endurance setting And this is a direct quote From Craig In Super 2 They do five laps And then have a safety car period So See regular crash period break Yeah direct all criticisms To sea lanes But yeah It's about giving these young guns Exposure And part of that is the pressure Of qualifying a car at Bathurst Does that have risk? Yes But You're in this Regardless You might as well give the young kid a go Yeah fair play Fair play Fair point Let's have a look at error of us The team that finished second In the race last year Raining champions Brody Kosteki, Todd Hazlewood I mean Todd was Todd was really racey at Sandown He was up for the fight And that car was quick It occurred to me too This will be the first time Since 2018 That a number one car has been In the Bathurst 1000 Because of course Scott McLaughlin, when he was the champion Shane Van Gisberg And when he was the champion Elected a stick with their traditional numbers And didn't use the number one So It's the first time since 18 When Wink Up and Pulled Umbrell ran it But it's in play Eribus's year We know what's been You know We know the bigger picture story Of it all It's all been weird It's all been strange There's been shit going on LeBron newly finished on the podium In the 500 Yeah The number one car was fast enough To be on the podium At the 500 I have an elevated view Of their potential at Bathurst Compared to If we were rolling it The last five or six rounds Of the championship I think I can't help but feel That they're in it up to their eyeballs It's the one that they want to win At this point I mean everybody does But more so They're going to salvage something From the year Well this is it They're not in championship contention They have had A horrid year compared to the standard They set last year And that's just looking at The on track results Never mind everything else Yep A lot of that turmoil has been If not sorted Had a line drawn under it Everyone seems to be on the same Out from the outside Everyone seems to be on the same page And that page Underlined at the bottom Has win the Bathurst 1000 Written on it It's a big page It is a big page But I mean The showing that they put on it Sandown Like Considering Considering how little running Jaden O'Jade had in the nine car Prior to the race Due to mechanical issues they had Due to it raining for most of Saturday And then not putting him in the car Because it was going to be dry Sunday anyway The nine car had a very impressive day And Like you said Broly would have been Was in within a Shout of the podium But for The late race scramble With Golding and then Matt Payne The one car Genuinely can win this race It could even be an outside contender Because we know what Brody can do Around Mount Panorama He was on pole by a solid margin last year Went faster than I think anyone Expected a Gen 3 car to do Last year They really are a good shot at winning this race It's a good point because you've segued Without knowing it To my next point So If Brody can back to back pole positions He'll join an exclusive club There's only five drivers Who have taken successive poles At Bathurst for the great race Has this released Moffat Brock Bartlett Skafetander That's a pretty good list And of those Moffat and Brock got three in a row each KB got two in a row in the Camaro Skaf you got two in a row for HRT And Garth got two in a row for HRT You know eight and nine So It's pretty rare That you can back it up For pole position for the big race And most of them Think with the exception of Bartlett One at least one of those races We're Moffat one Seventy and seventy-one Had pole in seventy-two Didn't win Brock Didn't win seventy-seven But then one eight and nine Bartlett didn't win either Skafetone neither Of those two in the 90s Oh he did too, yes And Tanner of course one eight and nine With Will Davison So That's what we love about this race We love the history We love the possibilities But that's one to bear in mind For Erebus We've talked a couple of Chevy teams So let's jump to a four team Tickford clearly This is all asterisk With the crankshaft stuff Next to it all but Waters and Moffat are absolutely on the list A solid battle We have a talk championship here A great deal There's a chance here for Will Brown To break the back of his opposition Three hundred on the line To win the race Even he could break Brock Feeney here This could actually break Brock Feeney Even a Will Brown win And Brock Feeney finishing six or seventh Or eight Suddenly he's a weekend behind The two weekends to go This is the thing Brock needs to From a championship perspective He just needs to finish Ahead of Will Brown From here to the end of the year He cannot afford to finish Behind Will Brown He's got lots in front of him Can't we just have him right on his tail No for sure but at the very least You need to be in front of him And we saw how badly he wanted To be in front of him at Sandown With getting out ahead After that final What was supposed to be the final round Of pit stops And then breaking that little bit too late Into turn one Trying to dive back onto the race track And then they ran into each other Yeah Yeah I actually covered off Tyler every Again before I thought he did a really Great job at Sandown For a guy who's done Pretty much stuff all racing He's done the about this He did the about the six of them That was it Yeah, that's it I thought he did a really great job Have we managed to convince Tickford to keep the super livery I really hope so Oh, I'm not sure I haven't checked up on that Yeah So far I've only heard one person say That that livery didn't look good on that car And I don't know whether I trust Brad Jones's opinion on that matter What would he do? What would he do? Anyway, he's Japanese racing connections With Mitsubishi, not with Toyota Supers anyway I mean I think we clearly agree Both the Tickford cars are Evering with this Probably slightly more Waiting towards the water's car Than the Randall car Just giving the experience of the two guys Who've played a role in that race For the last three or four years in a row The one question mark I would have over them Is that they were not strong here in February on the hard tyre That's right, but they weren't strong They were in their not strong period of the year What is was fast elsewhere But they did have problems at Bathurst But they just weren't fast at Bathurst to either True, that's something to keep an eye on I mean the early rollout of practice at the mountain Good thing is Moffat's been race sharp He's been racing Transaiming between I mean, we've got to tell you His day job, he builds houses That's what he does these days Property developers Yeah, correct, but lock aspirants Well, he's not one of those property developers That wears a suit and tie He actually gets in and rolls up his sleeve And is on the job site Pressing on and getting stuff done So Tickford are obviously coming off the back This is 10 years since The Chaz Most at Paul Morriswin For that team So they had a drought of 10 years when they started Before they finally won the race Then they go back to back And now they've had another drought of 10 years So maybe it's at the other end of the You know, if you'd sort of even it out It might actually work out That's the way it plays out Last lap passes in both of those wins as well Or attempted pass in 23rd Well, Jamie did get kind of ahead He's sort of got his nose in front there for a really second Didn't he? But we covered off Walkenshire and Dreddy And I did clearly Chaz Most at Lee Holdsworth Will be absolutely still filthy About that era that he made at Sandown He owes him, he owes him for that one That was a big, they got out of jail a bit too On where they could have finished up that race at Sandown after that spin that he had But, you know, I don't think that goes against him for Bathurst He's been a tried and true good solid performer up there But every year that you're barely in a car during the year That's got to make it so hard I always feel for the co-drivers Particularly heading to Bathurst Because, I mean, we're asking them to not play a game all year And come into the grand final And not ping a hamstring with their first gig Like seriously With barely any training in lead up or stretching We're asking them to go out there and kick one from 50 You know, 10 rows back through the big sticks It's pretty tough It is rough, but that's the game This is what they sign on for on there It's time for everyone Compensated, so It's time for everyone Really, there's one welcome shore car in the title fight Young Ryan Wood's making his debut Paired up with Fave and Coolthard, so a good set of experienced hands there But if they've got a sacrifice No question who's getting a sacrifice there Oh, for sure, and there's the possibility of that Because you remember back to February Their cars were very strong here on the hard tyre Ryan Wood nearly made the shoot out Yeah, yep So He also failed to finish up that race He did But, um He's got a bit more, he's got a Half, most of a year under his belt now Yeah, he made three quarters So, um Yeah It wouldn't be surprising to see Ryan Wood and Fave and Coolthard on the podium No, but I'd be surprised I would be surprised But clearly they've got There's two fights going there Trying to win the championship and trying to win Bathurst You win Bathurst that totally helps you with your championship But it does How you focus on that is another matter And Penn Wright racing the Grove team I think across the board there, the Matt Payne Garth hander car is Strong, he's solid Garth hasn't lost it, we saw him he was up for the fight At set and he was taken You know, I think Declan Fraser tried to take him to the fence Going down the pit straight there at one stage and he wasn't going to take fire at that Don't do that to GT No, no, no, I think Declan nearly learnt a lesson there But, um They're riding the fight and clearly with Richie Stanaway and Dale Wood They were running comparatively with the other car at Sandin before theirs went bang So Dale Wood's really underrated Really underrated, his Bathurst 1000 record is pretty solid All things considered over the last 15-16 years that he's been going there So he's one of those non-flashy co-drivers that doesn't really get put up in the lights very much But do I think that Richie Stanaway's going to win the race? No, do I think that they get on their day play a role in the race? Sure But if you had to pick one of the grove cars that's going to be the performer It's probably 19 I think you can count out Richie though He was the strongest of the grove cars here in February That was a long time ago A long time ago, same tyre And it's the track that he has the most experience of in a Gen 3 car That's true, that's true Time will tell, time will tell Would they get both cars with a shootout? Or if they only got one who's getting in You got to go with pain, surely You would think it would be Matt Payne But you wouldn't be shocked if Richie snuck in there No, not at all Okay We've done a few Ford teams, let's have a look at Camaro team Let's get to team 18 I've been wanting to talk about this team So it's Mark Winibotum and Michael Caruso back together And it's David Reynolds and Warren Luff together Reynolds and Luffy are the oldest combination in the field Average age 43 and 321 days by the time we get to race day You know what though? That's just a stat That doesn't really matter The thing that I always flag with this team And now we've got probably four or five years of data across there They have never, ever been in the fight at Bathurst in any stage in any of those races Yeah And how do you work? Oh, that could have been the year They've all been a bit blah And then it really plateaued and really hit the bottom last year When they ended up with cars running out of gas right at the end of the race That was an absolute disaster Heads rolled after that Yeah, they did Yeah, they did I just... The thing is Reynolds is a bear at Bathurst He's a what? He's an absolute bear whenever he goes to Bathurst he's fast What does that mean? He's fast A B-E-A-R Yes The wife bears fast because there's honeypots around Okay, let's just go with yes then Anyway I love throwing things at you It's like he grows extra legs when he's at Bathurst I agree with you, he does Yep, it's true It's true, as long as he doesn't have those legs cramp Then you're fine Yeah, if he had a couple of extra legs in 18 Yeah, that would have had different results That one time, that one time Yeah, they've got to do something here They have to put a good result on the board Contending some way shape or form because They've been... It's too strong a word to say A relevant in the Bathurst 1000 for the last four or five years But there's just not one moment where you go Ah, that year that they were... Oh yeah, they were there And what level of motivation will Mark Winterbottom have going into what he's... I'm certainly going to be his last Bathurst 1000 as a primary driver Well, I mean there's There's stuff going on behind the scenes But if he doesn't end up full-time, again, somehow, somewhere next year This is it Does he have a point to prove? Sure, but they've all got points to prove Just different points at different times of their world Here in Caruso, at least they've got a combination that they know what they've got Like, they're not blooding a young rookie-co-driver They're not bringing in someone that's never driven for the team They absolutely know what they've got Steering the ship, or steering the car in 18 And for a guy that has really not done a lot of racing this year, Caruso Did a very solid job at Sandown Yeah, yep, so it could go either way, can't it? When these guys who've done one, maybe two races or no races for the year Step in, so yeah, but that team, they've got to give us something next weekend Up at Bathurst Brad Joe's racing, interesting one Again, that's another team that when we get to Bathurst In certain eras of the sport, they've been more competitive Bathurst year has not been that era No, it's not been that era at all I mean, Andre Heimgartner, Declan Fraser, other lead car But I would say Bryce Fullwood and Jalen Rope, I'll throw that far off Don't forget Bryce's Bathurst record in the last few years has been pretty solid He's been a regular in the 10 He and Dean Fiore have been in the 10 a few times I found his way into the top 10 in times when the car just shouldn't have been fast enough to do that Yeah, yep And it's been an issue with BJR, certainly in the gen 3 era of switching the tyre on in qualifying at Bathurst And they've been down the wrong end of the grid at the start of the race And magically that 14 car is at the right end when the checkable air comes out Please give your message after the tune It's PC here, mate, I saw a journalist on what's on to their phone I'm just double checking your V8 booth night at Bathurst on the Thursday night October 10 I'm a shooting school 730 kickoff at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre Gabe, you reckon they only need a toilet because I only get one person there So you better double check that Anyway, it's going to be a hell of a night, buddy You and I session for over an hour with the fans as well Guys, anything else you want? Careful what you wish for, mate, it's going to be no-hole bars We'll have a few laughs, track a few jokes You'll be boring, I'll be exciting But that's okay, that's probably used to that Anyway, oh good mate, look forward to it Lots of stories, lots of bullshit, should be a rip of a night Very good, speak soon One of the things that Maybe, no, no, maybe I think it's definitely the motorsport and supercars as part of that Can do better Is the storytelling behind the setup of things Yeah And one of them is, so we've just come off the back of the AFL Grand Final And there were so many storylines and angles to the Lions winning the flag Whether it's Chris Feig and their coach who's what, 63 Oldest ever coach to win an AFL Grand Final And the first to never be a former player in the league All the stuff that's been going on in the background with the racism situation With the allegations via his time at Hawthorne with Alistair Clarkson All the different angles of all the players Oscar McEnone misses out because he popped his shoulder But he committed to the team for the prelim To just get another quarter of play out of his bung shoulder You know, we can go on and on, we're not a footy podcast But point being, I think if you look back here If we could find a Brisbane Lions style Victor for Bathurst next weekend Brad Jones racing has all those elements I mean, this is the race that Bradley's tried to win for years Six times on the podium That's equal record for the most podiums without a win Then they've been on the podium as a team owner When he wasn't driving, Jason Richards came at Conville But owner, isn't that the last time they were on the podium? Yes I mean, that's 15 years ago And they've been fast at various times in that interim period And it's just not worked out for them on each occasion Yeah, and having four cars in the fight of 26 If ones down, they're all down Or they're all up, you know, there was a year They got three in the shootout with Dale Wood, Fabian Coulthard And was a prodding in the other cast to that stage for memory Yes, and then they had the lap of the dogs in the race Where all of them were essentially taken out of contention Oh, that was... So that was the one where the Yule and Coulthard car was in the sand to cause the safety car And then Dale Wood tried to catch up to the queue Bashed to the back of Andrew Jones or whoever was in the car I don't think the 14 caused that safety car period But it did hit a kangaroo at the start of that safety car period Yeah, that's what it was, yeah, that's what it was So it's either all happening great or it's all happening shit There's no "too good, too bad" or "too so so" Or "three good, one not good" It's sort of all up all down You think the last few years that the eight car in particular Has had their last year, they had a massive engine blow up The year before that Dale Wood was taken Yeah, it was woody, yeah, it was taken out Remember that it was woody because he cried on the show television And as he talked about us on the podcast last year The guys at his business at his signage business Took the vision of him crying on telly Blew it up and then made huge stickers And wore paper out of it to put in the toilet at work So he got back from Bathurst and found that in the toilet Which was very cruel It must have been a great employee review after the next one That is so, so you want to pay rise for next week? Yeah, that probably didn't go down so well One thing we haven't discussed here is Dick Johnson Racing The Shelby Power Racing team So is that a reflection also where they are in the scaler things here? Just where they've been since Gen 3 I mean, they have been largely nowhere They've had a few more flickers of form this year But by and large When we're talking even just the Ford teams in pecking order They're not top three No, you look at their hopes for this weekend You think, okay, maybe they might get one Maybe two cars in the shootout But then after that, they just have not had race pace Their greatest performance at Sandown Came with the rebuilding of car 17 to get it back out To do enough laps to be classified as a finisher They just saw in the early laps Andro Antón de Piscolli just going backwards That was all he had He had it in reverse gear They just have not Undoubtedly, they're not pleased about this either But they just haven't made progress To be able to say heading into Bathurst Yeah, we have a genuine shot at this on speed They don't No, no, no Not unless something remarkable has happened in the past three weeks Yeah, and I don't, well, what's remarkable is that They have had a driver of a car leading into Bathurst But it wasn't one of theirs Yes, true So the spare Blanchard Mustang, which is actually a former tickford car Was used for the engine testing at it Queensland Raceway during the week with DJR's drivers Because they're the homologation team Driving it, so it's a little bit of a strange preparation Before heading to Bathurst But yeah, I think you're right They're a pick up the pieces team At Bathurst, clearly there's going to be a big reset there For next year with Brody arriving I've got no doubt, there'll be big engineering shuffling Behind the place, they need to mix it up And to go and bolster up their team in all areas So, Will Davison's with Kai Allen in 17 And Anton and Tony Del Berto are in car 11 And of course it's Anton's last Bathurst With DJR, Will's ongoing With the team and Kai's future is assured We know where he's going next year And it's off to Grove I mean, it's a unique one Where we've got a lot of these young drivers They're not auditioning They've got a gig for next year So the whole storyline of all Will Young Bloke Try too hard and do something silly here It's not really in play here this year Because all of these guys have got a gig Well, not all of them, Cooper Murray and Kai Allen do Declan Fraser does not That's true, that's true And he wants to remind the world that You know, his time in the main game was Fleeting, but shouldn't have been But I think it's just a case that there's just no room in the inn In terms of the seats for next year A couple of other teams to just touch on through We've talked Erebus, we've talked Triple 8, we've talked BJR We've talked Tickford, we've talked DJs WAU, we've talked Groves, we've talked Team 18 So that leaves us with three teams Is Premier racing here? Okay, James going David Russell, podium It's NF 500, deserved, wasn't a Bradbury Absolutely in it If they're going to deliver Is David Russell the secret source? And clearly it's not down to one person But gee, he just has clearly had an impact on that team Absolutely, and it's funny that he said this completely unprompted Because in the post-Sandown press conference Because it definitely was thought about By pretty much everyone I talked to In advance of the race But the whole specter was he doing while at Erebus Because of the co-driver weight rule That follows the primary driver And in theory allows the light co-driver To run the car substantially lighter During their stints Was that the secret to why David Russell performed so well And the Enduros last year And he emphatically proved that Sandown That was not the case He was one of, if not the best performed co-drivers Considering where that car was in the field Yeah, I think that, I mean, you look at Goldings Form the last for years at Bathurst It's been pretty decent, so This time this year versus last year I moved them up my ranking board They're not in the favorites group of five or six to win But they're in the next group now Probably my third tier before that And having finally gotten that monkey off their back Of a podium at Sandown They know they can execute now Ludo LaClaz said James Golding basically Like fire it up and actually Like stepped up to the challenge of No, I've got to make this pass To try and get this podium And he did And you then carry that That confidence With you So this is a team that now knows it can execute It knows it can do the job required To stand on a podium And this is now a team also that has Is in the group a fair welling a driver Because of course Tim Slade is moving on The team has Said that it's good, it's got its option Locked in for next year There's a discussion around that But I've got a funny feeling there Might be a Kiwi bloke who's going to end up At car Not Murph Actually, we will talk Murph before we finish this podcast Because he is in a car at Bathurst this year Just not in the main race So Tim Slade has Cameron McLeod with him Really important for Cameron McLeod After Sandown with multiple skirmishes In Super 2 got involved in a clash With Jordan Boyce Clean weekend is all he needs Just keep doing laps and keep your nose out of trouble That's the key for him Matt Stone Racing Another year That team stepped it up He and Dylan O'Keeffe are in the 10 car And it's the Cameron's Creek With Cameron Hill I see Perkhad in the shootout I see Cameron Hill knocking on the door Of the shootout My question is Can Dylan O'Keeffe stand up here For Nick Perkhad in this team Because I've got a feeling He's going to get in that car when it's in a good position And has got to keep his head And has got to make a name for himself He's been around a long time And a nice solid performer in Porsches and TCR and Super 2 But it's kind of one of those There's always been a front runner in supports But not really one any of them Here's an opportunity with a team that has grown With a driver who's Mature mid 30s Probably now at the peak of his powers With runs on the board this year Here is his best chance, Dylan O'Keeffe To deliver a result For his career that might just keep him Flowing into this for many moons to come I reckon this is his best chance To have something really strong happen 100% and it does lie on his shoulders Because MSR now Are largely a proven quantity When it comes to the Gen 3 era They were in addition to the wins Perkhad notched up through this year They were fast here in February Cameron Hill made the shoot out During one of the legs of the Bathurst 500 And qualifying in the top ten We of course know Perkhad is fast at Bathurst Former race winner The question mark is over O'Keeffe And I think he probably fell slightly short Of what he needs to do at Sandown So He has that to overcome for Bathurst But he's got the opportunity And that's the key thing Because that's a co-driver seat That I think was being discussed with a few other drivers Who were pretty keen to get into it But ultimately it's ended up with Dylan So a big chance for him to Jack a really great result That just leaves the Blanchard team James Courtney Jack Perkins The old duo back together And the Aaron's Aaron Love I think it's great Aaron Cameron's got a debut In the main game He's one of the most deserved blokes Who, you know, went into Super 2 Because he had to go through Super 2 To get the points required for Super license but he's done Super Utes, S5000, TCR He's been a front runner in the mall But he's finally been given an opportunity So I think that's a great thing But that Blanchard team They just need some results Even if it's a finish 11th and 12th Lead lap No dramas Just need to put something on the board It's been a really rough year In their expansion to two And to all the things that have come with it They just need a couple of Just need a solid weekend We've seen the odd spike of pace from them Over the course of the year as well Very odd So what was it last year Where they had that bizarre issue Of the starter motor falling off the engine And that's why they didn't finish What couple laps to go Yeah, Todd Hazel Trying to scold rag the thing to the finish line Just couldn't quite get 161 out of it It just didn't want to get to the To the end So the other thing too We talked the Triple 8 Wild Card But Matt Charter and Brad Vaughan They did not look out of place And having said that Matt And Jalen Roboff two years ago They didn't look out of place At Bathurst either when they ran as a Wild Card In a Commodore So little team And the great thing is They get to be pitted with Triple 8 So they have a combined pick crew So if you're going to ever do a Wild Card Good time to do it when Triple 8 is the other team 100% And it is a real Cinderella story This in terms of The people working on this car Well, certainly a men, certainly Matt They have full-time jobs In terms of the preparation of this car This is a passion project Absolutely full privateer spec With a high-quality Triple 8 built car The car that won last year's Sand End 500 It is, yeah, same car And the great part is that I think this is a team that So many of our listeners So many of the longtime motorsport fans Love the year of the privateers There was a team to sort of To the battlers This is them, here it is If you were going to bang on about the privateers And the history of the race and all that stuff And it's not the same It's not the same, it never will be Because everything evolves But if you want a Hanger hat on a privateer car To keep following Car 118, Brad Vaughan and Matt Charter Is the car for this year's race for you to follow Because I reckon I know you're not a predictions man That car finishing the top 10 And I think it's doable 100% And to be honest, anything If they're in the top half of the field If they have a trouble free day And they bring the car home straight That's a win for them If they finish in the top half of the field Look out battlers On Sunday night Well at Sand End they got done A penalty because They weren't at the Right after all their stops they went too fast And then had to get the speed back And that was a procedural thing Yeah it was They lost a bunch of time That you add that time back into them And they're pretty much on the fringe of the tenant's handout So that's the beauty of this race We don't know what we're going to get We could sit here and wax lyrical about it all Until our mouths fall off But the reality is that We'll find out next weekend just how that's all going to flow Now there is a bunch of other things There's always a pile up there But there is really only one There's always many up there Not necessarily a pile up in the category No, no, yeah true There is one support category that is the clear standout this year With a 55 car field The V8 sleuth heritage revival And I'm going to call it the V8 sleuth heritage revival Because it seems that some of our other media colleagues and friends have forgotten To call it by its proper title I think they've just forgotten That's all it is They're just getting a bit forgetful That's all it is There's nothing more in it But group C, group A, super tourers Five litre V8/V8 supercars Greg Murphy in a product Commodore Nice tie-in That it's 20 years since the Spider-Man came out car won the race He's in the Spider liveried Product VN Commodore Nice tie-in It's good, isn't it? You pointed that out this morning That's fantastic Bit of serendipity This works, 20 years on John Bauer Bathus winner STP Commodore, the Ed Singleton car The 92 Bathus winning Nissan GDR is in the race So there's seven Bathus wins that are fusing together here It's a great line up There's a bit of everything for everyone Makes models, eras I've not heard and felt as much excitement About a support category for the 1000 In a long, long time To the point where I even got And I won't say names at the moment Out of respect I had a prominent team manager Of a professional team in the UK Message me Who is going to be at Bathus He's had a connection to Australian V8s Supercars and Turicars over the years He's asked me and sent me a photo Of a BMW M3 from Europe Is this thing going to be on at Bathus next year? Because if so, this car would like to come So people around the world Are noticing the heritage revival By no means Can we claim the credit for this event? This is Ed Singleton and his team Who have put their heritage revival concept together Our contribution to it is that we have, I guess you would say We've shouted about it from the rooftops Fed it around the place Punched out the stories, updated everyone with what's going on We've amplified it I guess you would say is our role in all of it But I'm so excited because there is just I think it's the connection of some of the cars That didn't race against one another in period But you get to see them on the track at the same time Absolutely, talking about Ed The car that he's bringing for the weekend Is the roadways Group C Commodore that Alan Greis Put on pole for the '82 race Was there in '83 and '84 And if you've been to Bathus at some point in the past ten years If you've been to the National Motor Racing Museum You'd have seen this car It has not basically turned a wheel on a racetrack Since its last race at the end of 1984 at basketball And Ed's recommission it Ed became the custodian of it, I think last year Has recommissioned it And is going to put it back on a racetrack In a racing setting for the first time in what, over 40 years Yeah, it's stunning And there's some other cars that haven't run for a while I mean, just this morning, I was talking to Peter Dolman Who's the driving standards advisor For heritage touring cars and historic He's going to do that with a revival category Up at Bathus And remember he had that B&M Well, he and John Cotta had those X, Peter Brock, BMW M3s So the car that was his car The one that was the green and pink one That won the two-liter championship in '93 Won the class at Bathus that year with he and John The two-liter class That very car Set in the museum, like the one you've just discussed In mobile colours for quite some years Oh, that was that car, the one with the 56 on the side Yeah, Doug Westwood's going to run it with 57 on the side So don't tell Uncle Neil, because he'll get excited to see his old car Well, it was his old car for Bathus, but he never got to race it No, he had the fun in the race He had the 6B gearbox, 56 car for that race Exactly, exactly right So I think there's something for everybody The one downer is that they won't be racing on Sunday They're done come Saturday lunchtime But if you're at Bathus Thursday, Friday, Saturday You get to see them, the paddock will be great So get there and check out the cars All of the drivers have cars They're going to take up a sizable portion of the paddock Well, I think that's actually created a situation Whereby, in the past, in the paddock There's been room for a tent of old cars And displays and things While all the Super 2 transporters are now going to be in the paddock Because primarily, there's 55 People bring in revival cars That have forced all those trucks that are normally up the hill For Super 2 to come down into the paddock Such as the size that they've had to take up So I guess that's a good problem to have It really is Shall we hook into a few questions? Got a few questions Let's do some answers I'm going to start here So Michael Shaw is a long time Commenter, listener, purveyor, all things motorsport Friend of the podcast Friend of the podcast, good point He says, "I'd like Shane Stat" That's Shane Rogers on our team "I'd like his stat that he wants in the podcast But no one will ask for it" Which is like a lot of things Shane offers up sometimes No one asks for it, but you're going to get it anyway It's pretty good more often than not So I asked Shane this And what happened after those 38 minutes? So he is predicting a General Motors win this year Based on the stats from the second year of every new era Okay, tell me more So if we won back to the second year of Group C Which was 1974 A Ford won that 1986 The second year of Group A GM won that Holden Commodore, Alan Grice, Graham Bailey Yep Second year of the 5L V8 era 1994 Ford? Ford won that 2004 Second year of blueprint General Motors Commandant Commodore Commandant Commodore Second year of car of the future Slash Gen 2 in 2014 A Ford won that So it's alternated each time And now in the second year of Gen 3 According to those stats It is General Motors' turn to win again Probably a pretty safeish bet Particularly if the cranks go bang In the other things Okay, well there is the stat that No one asked for, but we got it anyway Ryan Gravy How many laps have been completed at Bathurst In the Endurance race since its inception? Quite a lot In terms of Not every car in every race But if there's 161 laps in the race That year at week earning every car And the number of laps it's done? Every car Yeah, the number of laps completed by every car That starts the race Oh geez, this is always going to be a big number But go on, here it is It's rapidly trying to scan through The big list of It occurs to me that Oh no, here we are So 316,105 Laps from 1963 to 2023 That sound you can hear is people's jaws Being collected off the ground The fun fact about this is So we're in a chance next In all likelihood A million racing kilometer In Bathurst 500/1000 history Will occur next year Remember that for next year? Yes, we don't need to know for this year though Because we ain't going to get there By the way, where we are going to make it Before we get on the next question which I'll let you fire through Thursday night Next week October the 10th It is our V8 sleuth live night with Tony Cochran Neil Crompton's going to pop in as well And I've got a little bit of an extra evening that I can confirm to our podcast list And someone else is going to pop in And visit Mark Skaf is going to stop by So Skafy versus Crompton versus Cochran I should have put a ring around the stage And given them all boxing gloves And just let them get on Maybe we should record this We've had a lot of people asking We might get sued It is on Thursday night Normally we're at the museum for our Sleuth night at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Center In the E Macintosh theater Tickets are on sale now Jump on the website The links in the show notes to this episode To the B-MEC website To audio tickets come along We're going to have a pile of fun It's going to be a really good night Those nights are always fun I did catch up with TC in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago He's keyed up, he's fired up He's enthused He's good to go From everyone into the theater There's a bit of a motor racing Aussie flavor to it So he's not bowling out to serious That Chicago Bulls walkouts on Because I could also see that No, no, we haven't got that for him But he's keyed up He's excited It's going to be fun He hasn't been to Bathurst in 12 years Since he finished up with V8 Supercars So it's going to be a pile of fun Come along if you've never been to one of our nights before They are a night of motorsport chat But we're going to have some other topics to talk with TC as well Because he's got such a history in events Promotion, music, football And he is a larger-than-life character Who, whether you love him or loathe him Has been great for the sport over the journey So get along V8's with life Thursday night race week in Bathurst I mean, what else is there to do on a Thursday night in Bathurst? It's very true It's very true Fair play Kenny Martin will position eight on the grid Win the race this year or will the curse continue? Ah, Kenny Straight away I am awarding Kenny our City Rural Question of the week for this Because it's for our Great Partners of City Rural Insurance Brokers Who have been around since '95 The same year that Larry and Russell won at Bathurst I think this is a stellar question Because it means he read last year's official program And all the little bits and pieces I've done about this I think the streak will continue No one's ever won the great race From 8th on the grid And I think that that continues this year It's hard to say Without knowing who's starting 8th on the grid though Because it's in As we talked about with AAA Not always having the best qualifying results A AAA entry that is capable of winning this race Could start from 8th It could But it won't I'm telling you now Last year I was rock solid It wasn't going to change And it didn't change So I'm going to stick with that right now And that's why I think Kenny Who has the City Rural Question of the week And of course City Rural can help you with insurance for business Transport trades and farming Much much more grab a quote Jump online cityrural.au Kenny I think there's something in what you're saying there I'm going to back it that it's going to continue Because It's happened since 1963 Why change now? Cause all streaks come to an end sometime That's true but this year's not the year will Maybe next year Maybe next year Dave Webley Given Red Bull's form Has any team ever gone 1-2-3 Or has there only ever been 1-2 And how many 1-2s have there been In the history of the race? It's like Dave knew the segue That I wanted to do for the official Repco Bathurst 1000 program I don't know how we knew but he knew We've got a feature that you did On the history of 1-2s In the great race In the program Which by the way Is available now If you're going to be at the track You can get it at the Repco track side Store So if you're worried that If you're going to order it online And whether it arrives in time Don't buy it online Go to the track Get it from the Repco track side Store At the bottom of the mountain And also at the top There's a store up there as well If you're not going to the race Jump on our website Superstore.v8sluth.com.au You can order your copy there It will be in local news agents In the Bathurst area And at the National Motor Racing Museum There is a great feature On 1-2s in there Which, well, yeah, I said it You did it So how many 1-2s have there been And they might not necessarily have Been 1-2 form Finishes, I Actually had to open the feature story Because it occurred to me That I hadn't looked up the answer The question I couldn't remember at the top of my head So if we just go through them sequentially 1967 was technically a 1-2 finish For the Ford Motor Company of Australia Yeah, yeah Even though the car that Took the checkered flag Second protest at the result And found that the winning car Had been accredited an extra lap Did it cut through the back of the pit The Gagans? That was because the Gagans Prep there, Falcon out of Sydney And Harry Firth prepped He's out of Melbourne And they ran their own ships But they were both entered As official Ford Motor Company Entries Yes Yeah The next time was in 1970 Once again, Ford Motor Company of Australia Alfred McPhee And Bruce McPhee And that could have been A 1-2 form finish But Bruce McPhee thought it would look silly So he hung back A bitches of the Ford execs But not happy Yes Moffered again, 1977 The most famous 1-2 finish Yup 40 years ago this year 1984 The last of the big bangers The two Marlboro Holden dealer team Commentals It was 40 years to the day On September 30th A couple of days ago Yes Yeah, that's flown And those cars will be reunited this year I'm told that's the case I hear the Bowdens are bringing 25 to Bathurst To be with 0-5 together again Yes And the next time That half that we had a 1-2 It was a while after that 2010 2010 Bode phones Yes, and that is the last time it's happened And the irony was there That had things not occurred The way that they did There was a 1-2 ready and waiting to unfold If the AAA cars didn't get there on fuel Because HRT were next in line Until Will, Davison crashed at the top of the hill And that gave the safety car to AAA That they kind of needed to save on juice To get to the end David Reynolds could have been a Bathurst winner In 2010 And gone naked on the podium Oh, he wore Or, or Down to his mark-scafed box of shorts Oh, the scafed box of shorts Which arguably would have been worse Or better Or funnier Well, yes Yeah, I'd read this issue It could go either way The thought that Mark Scafed would lose That race due to his car running out of fuel But Dave Reynolds wins it And Mark's face is on the podium Regardless That's, that's, wow Yeah, that's an ex-level David Ferguson, next question by the way He's going to the mountain this year for the first time Where's our favourite spots to watch the cars go round? It's funny, like I'm always busy So I've not really watched Supercars go round The top of the mountain During a Bathurst 1000 weekend We've gone up and had a look During the 12 hour During the Bathurst 500 sprint races But yeah, I've never actually watched the cars go round From the top of the mountain During the 1000 weekend Yeah, when you're there working It's very different From if you're there to be a punter But if you can, if you could Where do you like to sit and watch race cars go around Bathurst? Oh, probably Simon Park, the great Just, the great thing about Bathurst is you can wander around And watch them from different spots So anywhere across the top is delightful Delightful, delightful Delightful I think that I'm in the same boat The last time I went to the top of the mountain During a 1000 weekend I honestly I don't even know I couldn't even tell you Because, sort of, being there to work But I remember going for a 12 hour qualifying In 20 there, 13, 14, 15 Somewhere in that room, GT era And watching, I just, I like standing Just as you get basically To the S's on the approach to the Dipper Where you can see the cars pop over the top of Skyline And that's where the road really drops away And it actually makes you You know, it's an effort to walk there And you actually get to see the real speed Of how they're dropping down And winding their way across there So quickly taking that curb on the left Through the S's to just Make it ride through there and set it up for the Dipper I reckon that's pretty, I mean, yes they're going faster Other parts of the track But if you want to see Maximum commitment driving That's absolutely the place to go I do love being among The throng of people at the bottom of the mountain Particularly when, and I'm going back to Spectator Days here But that bottom of Conrad Strait Where you get, you know, the cars interview Under the bridge And then, you know, that's where the greatest Proliferation of people are So that's where the, particularly the end of the race I think that's where you really want to be To, um, to cycle that up And then you've got to be under the podium You've got to find a way to get over there for that 'Cause that's, um, absolutely part of Athos history for sure Gavin Kozlut How many laps are we going to miss out on Because of the time certain finish? Oh, Gavin You have just walked into the lion's den, my friend It's a simple answer The answer's zero Gavin, a big, fat, round, zero Mmm, bathos And we've said this a lot of times on socials But clearly we have to keep saying it Does not have a time certain finish It is the only race on the calendar That does not have a time certain finish So they will race it until they run out of light Or we run out of time or we run out of energy Because, uh, there is no rule that says We're done It would be interesting to see what would happen If we did start to encounter darkness Yeah Depending on how close we are to the finish Of the, um, or the, the 161st lap How far would they run it into darkness? Because keeping in mind that most of these Gen 3 cars do not have particularly good headlights Mmm, I honestly don't know Don't know, but it'll be a bridge that If it ever gets crossed Something utterly remarkable Would have happened in the preceding hours Massive weirdness has occurred to get us into that position That's definitely for sure Um, Brent Gao, what's the best lap time improvement In a top 10 shootout from qualifying time? That's their lap time, not grid position Mmm So this is a, this was a bit of a fun one And sha, so we got shame Fun to shame or fun for everyone else? Well, I enjoyed it I enjoyed going on the ride for this one So, obviously you think back to What was it? 2019 where qualifying was wet And then the shootout was dry Obviously there was a big disparity in times Um, for the record that means that Cam Waters has the biggest net gain from qualifying To the shootout with A 25 second improvement A 25.7 second improvement Yeah But if you look at the ones that are not Like seriously weather affected like 2019 was Uh, 1979 shootout is next So there was a little bit of Light right, light rain in qualifying And then Alan Moffatt Had some engine problems With the old Federation Insurance Falcon Laid down a bit of oil Um, he didn't make The top 10 fastest runners at the end of qualifying But of course the rules back then were Actually the eight fastest Plus two at the organizer's discretion So even though Moffatt qualified What 22nd or something He was parachuted into the shootout Where he proceeded to improve On his qualifying time by 18.73 seconds Um, Bob Morris was in a similar boat But he also only improved He only improved by 13 I do really love how And I say this I sound like I'm a broken record But we see it every day And it does get somewhat tiring The bashing that I see people with socials And how it was so much better back in the day And you know, it was all very noble And wonderful And it's been ruined these days By the evil corporates and super cars And commercialism and rah-rah Yet in 1979 and All these years under the previous Um, races administration Could you imagine if now The top 10 shootout was for the eight fastest And then, you know, if two of the favorites Just had a shooter We let him in Well, some people were talking Seriously, people were like Oh my god, lose their mind Well, we referenced 2014 With Jamie's charge from the back of the grid After crashing and qualifying Imagine if he'd just got to start the shootout anyway Yeah, yeah Him and Reynolds, who both crashed in qualifying Yeah, yeah Um, so anyway, if you take Weird instances like that out Um, the biggest gain from a dry qualifying session To a dry top 10 shootout It's actually Peter Brock 1978, the very first shootout He gained 2.49 seconds between qualifying And Hardy's heroes As it was known then And that was the year that it was on a Friday On a Friday When they first held it in '78 And it was damp to start with And you got two runs But it was dry by the end And that's the other thing Until the mid-80s Everyone got two laps at it Yeah So, not only could you have Um, gone from nowhere To being parachuted into the shootout field But then you got two shots at it Yes I mean, wow It was really better back in the day Wow, sometimes I've got to shake my head at that But anyway Just for the record, if we want to look at like a modern-ish lap Mark Scafes' shootout lap in '98 Oh, it didn't he do it at night? He did a 9 And he cut 1.8 seconds off his qualifying time Yeah, good effort So Scafes got that one Nice Mark Wilson's got a question, Will Shouldn't they move Bathurst back to the long weekend? I feel like the battle of Bathurst Let that one slip away, unfortunately And RL's very much got that one And I don't think Bathurst needs it, to be honest No I mean, Bathurst, the last time that a Bathurst 1000 Was held on the October-long weekend In New South Wales, Labor Day weekend Would be the '98-2 liter race, would it not? I think so Because didn't they try and get that weekend back Early in the V8 Supercar era, but it didn't land? I think they were keen to get it for But by the time that the war had been sorted out The V8 race had been in, well, November for a couple of years They got it back to October, but it was the weekend after The NRO Grand Final So yeah, that was kind of the thing that got sacrificed in the whole war over The Bathurst 1000 was played out, but I don't think it really affects it I think if you look at this year, the AFL Grand Final Gets its piece last weekend The NRO Grand Final gets its piece the next weekend And then Bathurst is the thing the weekend after And we all get a public holiday Well, what for Bathurst? Well, not for Bathurst David Andres, we've got a couple of questions left to go He said wouldn't it be nice for it all And I presume he means the Supercars Championship To be on Channel 7 and not pay TV I think I'll say he must mean the Supercars Championship Because Bathurst is entirely on Channel 7 The race, anyway And has been the whole time of the Fox tell And has picture in picture in the ad breaks now So you do, it is uninterrupted in that sense Yeah, and they'll be on air Friday, Saturday and Sunday For Channel 7's coverage this year Fox will be on air from Thursday onwards through Till the closer play on Sunday Jack Palmer, if any of the top championship contenders That's Brown, Finney and Mossett, don't finish at Bathurst Is that the end of their championship title hopes? Well, Brown's fine If anything, him not finishing at Bathurst would be fantastic For the rest of the championship Because it was closed right up depending on where Mossett and Finney finished But if either Chaz Mossett or Brock Finney, as we talked about earlier Have a Barry at Bathurst Forget it, that's basically it Well, even if all three of them have Barry's If we're going into the Gold Coast with Brown 2.30 odd In front, like, Camp Waters might be the one who actually is the big Gainer here, but Brown could put him away here Yeah He could absolutely finish Finney off at Bathurst And even with a win, Finney 7th or 8th He's 300 down, with 600 left on the table Like, he's actually pulled him apart this year with Brown When you go back through it There's not been a whole pile of scenarios where Brock had a DNF in this one Or crashed in that one Or he's just pulled him apart a bit by bit over the course of the year And he's got himself to this point where he's definitely got himself in the driver's seat Even now, even if, for arguments like they all had Barry's at Bathurst And retained the same points to Gold Coast Will Brown can effectively throw away one of those four races And still retain the championship lead Yeah, it still retain a reasonable championship lead Yeah, definitely, definitely But this is a must-get-a-result for Brock and Chaz For Will, a bit of a freer swing at it Not to say he's going to be cavalier or do something silly But if something did go wrong out of his hands Then he's got a buffer and I guess that's the advantage you earned by being on the podium Was it now? 15 times whatever it is out of the race is so far It's pretty much 3/4 of his year has finished on the podium To finish up, Jonathan Day This is an interesting one, I'd like your take on this fine sir He says, "Will Kai Allen be the fourth co-driver to win and then be part of the Groves team the next year?" And I scratched my head when I looked at this and then I sort of thought That's right, isn't it? I see where he's going with this, can you shed the lighting? Nah, Jonathan's nailed this So if you think back to last year's great race winning driver lineup Shane Van Gizbergen, obviously not at Grove Racing this year But Richie Stanaway, who is at Grove Racing? Yeah Year before that, Shane Van Gizbergen, again, didn't grow to Grove Racing But his co-driver, Garth Tanda, sure did Not long after and got everyone surprised, made everyone surprised? Yes, and the year before that Lee Holzworth Lee Holzworth won the race and ended up with a final farewell season Full time with Grove Racing That's the farewell to the farewell tour Yes So Jonathan's on to something here? He's nailed that Yeah I do think Kai is, as we discussed it when we were talking about DJ R early in the pod I think Kai is a very long odds to make this a streak of four? I think you're right, I think you're right But well spotted Jonathan, we do like a pattern and that's a good pattern That you have pictured there, whether it spreads to a fourth year in a row, remains to be seen But all those questions and more are going to be answered next weekend At Bathurst, we will have our Bathurst daily podcast rolling on the V8 Sloot podcast So tune into Will and I over the course of the days What day are we going to kick that off? Wednesday, Thursday, Thursday Thursday, I believe Once the cast hit the track for the first practice on Unless something remarkable happens on Wednesday That's true You never know, you never know Of course Wednesday, there's the track to town, there's the pit stop challenge in town That's going to be cool, I'm looking forward to that The annual Brad Jones Racing Check Receiving Championship He's back 25 grand or whatever it is in the budget But based on this every year, can't afford to lose They've only got a one in four chance this year, though That's right, you can't get both your cars in the final, can you? No Is that the Brad rule? They do, as we discussed in the last recent podcast They have changed the eligibility this year, I wouldn't necessarily call it the Brad rule It's the Brad rule But it has It's the Brad rule If you don't call it the Brad rule, I'm going to call it the Brad rule I'm sure Brad calls it the Brad rule I'm sure Brad Lee calls it the something else, something else Brad rule But anyway, that's a whole other story We're looking forward to getting up to Bathurst next week The website, v8sluth.com That you'll be pumping Conroy Brines with us On the ground punching away Shane Rogers will be up there with us Will and I will be there as well If you see us wandering around over the course of the weekend Say good day to the track, we love to see people who enjoy what we do Come along to V8 Sluth Live on Thursday night with Tony Cochran Crumpo and Skafie are going to pop in as well It's going to be a really great night, so grab your tickets to that Get your program, get involved If you're not going to Bathurst, enjoy it on the couch There is a sneaking suspicion will That there will be a guest commentator for the V8 Sluth Heritage Revival Is there just?
