(upbeat music) - Welcome to the ASHP official podcast. Your guide to issues related to medication use, public health, and the profession of pharmacy. - Hello and thanks for joining us today on ASHP official. An anticipation of the 2024 mid-year clinical meeting and exhibition. ASHP is hosting a series of podcast episodes focused on highlighting key sessions, hot topics, and can't miss moments at the meeting. I'm Hannah Post, education director on the national meetings education team at ASHP. And today we are sitting down with Megan Elman, family medicine, pharmacy specialist at Cleveland Clinic Akron General to discuss their upcoming session from textbooks to TikTok, precepting the Gen Z learner. - Thanks for having me today, Hannah. - Of course, so Megan, why should attendees come to your session? - That's a good question. You know, mid-year I think is a hot commodity. There's a lot of things driving your attention. My co-presenter and I, Ashley McMillan, who's down with West Virginia University, really thought that this was a critical topic to talk about and maybe would break up some of the clinical sessions. So as you can tell from the title, it's a little bit more focused on preceptorship from the educational realm. But we found that this is something that was really near and dear to our hearts. You're not seeing me or maybe you're watching the video, but certainly I am no longer part of the newest generation. So if we talk about Gen Z, this is a predominant feature that we see of a lot of our new residents, our students. And Ashley and I both kind of talked about how this is definitely a different way that we precept. While our session will focus on the differences between generations and we'll be talking about some of the nuances associated with that, some of the defining features, what we really wanted to talk about was some of the implications with interacting with our generation Z members. It's definitely different. You know, when I first started precepting, I was precepting my generation, which again, I'm a full millennial. So it was quite easy. You know, I knew the way that many people wanted to learn. I was implementing things that I, how I learned. And then I started noticing precepting got a lot harder as I was precepting a different generation. And I found that I really had to reflect that I wasn't a bad preceptor, but I was a good preceptor having a hard time. So Ashley and I have been in the business for education. We are both super passionate about generational differences as well as education associated with generational differences. So hopefully we'll be able to share some tips and tricks in terms of helping preceptors along this journey if they are similarly struggling across generations. - Yeah, absolutely. I think precepting is obviously a part of many pharmacists, you know, professional duties. So it sounds like a camp miss session. So as a millennial myself, you bring up some really good points about Gen Z and the differences in the generations. But looking forward, what do you think and what are you most excited about Gen Z bringing to pharmacy practice? - Hannah, that's a great question and super timely. I think we're gonna cover hopefully a good snippet of this during our presentation in incorporating, but probably the most exciting thing that I definitely am learning from them because preceptorship is a two-way street. Education is a two-way street. So hopefully I'm conferring some clinical knowledge, but then I really want my learners to teach me something. Really, this is the age of digital. The newest learners are really fostering learning in a different way. And they've certainly taught me some tips and tricks in terms of how I can enhance my education, but how can I learn better through digital means? We have a new layer that, I mean, when I was a learner, Google was, I don't even say the newest thing, but certainly the thing that we relied upon, this is just the tip of the iceberg. So I think really leaning into our generation Z, we as preceptors and educators and pharmacists can really learn more about the digital aspects that our newest generation brings to the table and how to optimize those both in our clinical practice, but then also in our own learning. - Let's shift our focus a little bit to the ASHP mid-year meeting itself. What do you love most about the mid-year? - Hard question, 'cause I think there's multiple factors associated with it. What I usually tell my learners is that it's the sleepover that you look forward to when you were younger. You get to hang out and really, as you start to get more involved with pharmacy, you get to see all of your friends that you haven't seen for a while from a national standpoint. So rarely are you in the same location as your friends that are pharmacists in Colorado, that are in California. So it's really from me getting to see the connections of people that I haven't seen in a while and I see on an annual basis. That's one part. Add into the fact, so I'm going to the sleepover, but then I'm also adding in clinical content. So I get to hear about the new innovations that people are doing and then take away some of the new updates that I get to apply to my practice that maybe I have read parts of the guideline, but I actually get to hear how people have implemented it. So I know I'm certainly looking forward to some of the sessions that I saw on the outline from a clinician standpoint. And then I'm gonna put a big plugin every year. Obviously, if you're a new learner or getting into ASHP, we rotate different sites. So you go to Anaheim, you go to Orlando, Vegas, New Orleans. New Orleans is a really cool culture. So this is probably, unfortunately or fortunately, my favorite site to go to out of all four. So I'm looking forward to the food. I'm looking forward to the connections and the continuing education associated with it. So the three pronged approach. - Well, that's all the time we have today.
