(upbeat music) - Good morning, Chicago, and welcome in to the Captain Jay Good morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. What David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We have Shay, we've got Jay Moore. We've got you here on this Waddle Wednesday. Thanks so much for being with us. It's still to come, Jesse Rogers with the latest on the Major League Baseball playoffs. And of course, with Jett Hoyer had to say to the press, the president of the Chicago Cubs. We'll hear from Jesse coming up at 918 right here on ESPN 1000. But I thought that, Camp, we've had a really good discussion stemming off of our five burning questions regarding the most valuable bear. I think that is important to pinpoint key players on your roster. And it just shows you where the bears are at two and two, a 500 ball club. And, you know, it's funny how we criticize the white Sox and the Cubs all the time about not having cornerstone talent, difference-making talent, a guy that can carry you, right? Remember, we're listening during the break of Danny Eckert from Crane's business. And he was talking about the Jersey sales and saying that for the third year in a row, there's no Chicago Cubs or white Sox that's gonna be even at the top 20 in Major League Baseball. When someone wants to put a jersey on your back, that means you're a star. - Well, also in a city where we idolize our athletes, we worship 'em. - Yep. - So embarrassing. Like if you said, "Kap, I'm gonna take you "to the store today, and I'm gonna buy you "any jersey you want of the Cubs." - Man. - Can I get a Santo? Banks, Williams? - Mm-hmm. - Sandberg? - Sandberg would be nice. - I'm not, there's no one on this team I'd buy their jersey. - Who am I getting a jersey at that? I go, "Wow." - Shoda, come on, Shoda's great. - I have a Shoda hoodie. It's cool. - From obvious shirts. But I mean, am I really walking around in an Emma Naga shirt? A jersey? No. - Not a star yet. - On the way though. - Good player? - Yeah, I think he's on the way. - Like my favorite one's probably Justin Steele. - Yeah. - I like him. I like his vibe. I think he's cool. But I'll get a Santo. But it's different for the, and the socks, that's not a conversation. I mean, you might, there's plenty of Luis Robert jerseys around the city when he was good. That's when you'd buy it. - How about like a Dom Fletcher jersey? - This is Dom Fletcher. Listen to Cap and J, who? Dom Fletcher. Out. - Exactly. - So that, so don't really don't have, I mean, you can have a crochet, but he's not gonna be here very long. It's fine, but he's not gonna be here. But the bears, I think Cap could be a different conversation. We look for most valuable bear. And I think that all of us, for the most part, I would say most of us look at Jalen Johnson as a difference maker in that secondary team. - He's an all throw man. That guy's a star. - But then who? - Brisker star. He's a really, really impactful player. - Then, sweat. Okay. - Sweat's a beast. - Okay. - Then. - Hello. - DJ? - Ah, well, look. Jerry's still out, isn't it? I mean, we've got Tommy talking about the watch of the All 22 and watch, he says that he was moping. We had a caller the other day and give credit to our caller saying that, hey, I watched the cadence version. I thought that DJ Moore was not going all out on running plays. You recall this, right? We just had that conversation. - Yeah. - So, I mean, if there's, and then you had Tommy say Billings. Then you read the Billings stats, it's like, okay. That has to be a deep dive at tape to be able to circle Billings and say he's the most valuable player. - Yeah, you have to watch tape to appreciate what he does 'cause he's a beast. - 'Cause you know how it is. As you watch a game live cap, it's the play that's in front of you. It's the replay from the TV. Like he got a sack or he had this great block. If they don't point it out, some people don't have the sports bandwidth to sit back and say, all right, let me go re-watch a game that I'd already saw. You have family, you got friends, you don't have time to go back. You and I have to do it to be able to cement our opinion by going back and watching the game. - How about Cole Comette? - I like Cole Comette. He's a stud. - Yeah. - Is that a good year? - Yeah. - I mean, is he a star right now? - Yeah. - No, he's a really good player. I think it's a good question. She put that on the pole at a ESPN 1000, what are some choices and who the most valuable bear is? I think, Joan, go ahead. - Let's iron out the choices before I do it. So we bond. - Zach Pickens? - No, we say we watch. - What? - Like, is Billings making the list of choices? - Yes. - Is Jravon Dexter making the list of choices? - But Jravon Dexter, that a nice year. - Brisker, yes. Billings, yes. Sweat, yes. Who else? Who's the fourth option? - I mean, there's nobody in the fourth option that could be on the offensive side of the football. - Cole Comette. - Oh God. - Well, he was forgotten about for two games. - True, he had 10 catches against Indy. - That's not good what we're talking about, right? I mean, it's a good conversation, but it's not good. - But it is a great conversation. - It just, that's not, I mean, here's what I believe. - Like, that's what we do here on this morning show. - Yeah. - Come up with topics that are like, wow, what a thought-provoking topic. - And the topic is not who you love. You know, who's Jersey you'd buy or who you love. We're just talking about impact players. And again, it will flush itself out as we go through the season cap. We're just talking about the sample size of four games. Four games are big. Well, I mean, we're in October now. And it's hard to define on the off-house side of the football a guy you say, that's the guy. That's the difference, but not yet. Maybe next month. - Maybe. - Maybe next month. - Maybe it's Caleb. Hopefully it is. - That would be great. - The most valuable bear Caleb would, that'd be great. - That'd be amazing. - So, I think that, is there anybody on the offensive list was you make the poll question, Shay, that you put on there? St.J. Moore on there? - No. - Colcomette on there? - No. - Swift on there. - No. - Okay. - See? - Tory Taylor. - Come on. - Have seriously. - Have seriously. This looks like lousy. - Yes. See, this is what happens, Cap, where we're excited about the team, and you have more wins for the bears than I do that you've projected. But as the season goes on, we have to project, and we have to find out who's going to be a difference maker, the difference maker, especially on the offensive side of the football. I think that's still to be determined. - Agreed. - I mean... - Completely agree. The answer should be DJ Moore, but it's not. Got a team leading the NFC North on the eye test. That's why power rankings stink, in my opinion. Because you got, I watch all the games. So I get the Vikings on my screen, the boys watching the Bears game. But we have Sunday ticket. By the eye test, right now the Vikings have to be one or two. Would you not agree if you've watched them play? - One or two what? - Right now, by based on the eye test of the two best teams, one of the two best teams in the NFL. - No. - As of today. - No. - Why not? - Because they're not. - They beat the Texans, the contender in the AFC. San Fran won the top two contenders in the NFC. And then a road divisional foe, the Green Bay Packers, with the quarterback back. - The answer is yes, Scott. I agree with you. - Thank you. Thank you, Jay Hood. So here's my question to you guys. - They're not one of the top two teams in the NFL. You've lost your mind. The Ravens are better. The Chiefs are better. Come on. - As of right now, I'm watching the games. But here's what I'm going to recommend to you guys. The last eight games for the Bears. Will they be favored one of those eight games? - Six divisional games. Seattle and San Fran. - Where's Seattle? - Go to the playoffs, win 10 games. Not if you can't win one of your last eight games. - Where's the Seattle game at? - I do not know. I don't know the Bears' schedule. I don't know if I can schedule my heart. - I think the Seattle game's here. So we'll be favored there, for sure. - The Seattle game is a soda field. - Okay, but will you be favored one of your divisional games? - We'll be favored. We'll be favored over your purple ass when you come to Chicago. - There's not a chance in Hell Cap. - You want to make a little wager? - Don't do that. - Well, we already have the wager, remember. So I'll be expecting that pizza gift card probably by, like, December 1st because the Bears might be eliminated. - That was pretty good. - Oh, doctor. - What exactly did we bet? - Remember, it was best record, but of the qualifications, the team has to make the playoffs. - Correct. - Yes. - It's a damn hard division, isn't it, Scott? - It really is. So by far, it is the best division in football right now, and it's not close. - That's correct. - And if the Bears had any kind of semblance and offensive line, it would be a no-brainer in anybody's mind. The question is, and the Bears perform offensively as good as their defense is, and right now you'd have to say after four games, the question is no. - I think it's a good question that Scott asked, though, Cap, as far as-- - It is. - The Bears being favored in any of these games. You said the last eight, right, Scott? - Correct, 'cause once again, their next five are, like, walking through the park and should win four out of five easily, and I can't stand the Bears, but I can honestly say, they should be able to win four in the next five. - Yeah, we have, let's see, Panthers, Jaguars. - Then the commanders on the road. - Yeah. - Then the Arizona Cardinals on the road. - Yeah. - And then-- - The Cardinals can't play against any qualified opponent, especially your defense. The Cardinals haven't proven anything other than beating a bad Rams defense. - And the Patriots here. - That's it. And then we get into division play. Oh, God. - Definitely breaking news for the Patriots as the Bears' injury luck just seemingly continues to get better. Their center, David Andrews, may require a season-ending shoulder injury. So the God-awful Patriots may be getting even worse before we get to play them. - Right at the top of the draft. That's where they belong. All right, Viking, Scott. He comes in the gloat, and by the way, we go unbended knee. We understand, Scott. - We appreciate you, Scott. - But remember that bet, man. You might want to amend that. They're off to a hot start. - They are. But when we beat the Panthers and they stub their toe. - Right back at them. - It's NFL. And Jamal, what did you come up with? - You know what? So far, you know, we had a whole lot of talk about Jalen Carter, but Javon Dexter, a senior with three sacks, the pressure that he's had. I think he's been the most valuable bear so far. - Steve, you agree? - Yeah, yeah. Absolutely do. Because coming into the season, one of the big questions was who's going to, you know, that three technique, and he's answered that question. So I think he's been the most valuable bear for the so far this season. - Yeah, all the things we talked about this summer, we wondered who else besides what would rush the passer would make a difference in the defensive line. Javon Dexter would be one of those guys. - Javon Dexter's had a really good year. He came in and absolutely took his off-season work seriously. - Mm-hmm. - I just don't think he's the MVP. I think he's had a good year. Juquan Brisker is the answer. - All right, Steve and Jamal, they weighed in with Javon Dexter. What's happening? - Well, you know what's happening. You know what's happening. We saw you with a smooth jacket on TV yesterday. - Looking good. - Looking good. Nice jacket. Really enjoyed that. Before we could talk about the Major League Baseball playoffs because there's stuff to talk about there. Jen Hoyer spoke to the media yesterday. What did you glean from the conversation? - Yeah, I think it was underwhelming. I think most people that watched it would agree. You know, I was thinking about this. If you watched that press conference, it fit after the 2021 season. That presser worked a few years ago. In other words, the emphasis on building something sustainable, drafting and developing and keeping things together for a bunch of years that worked at the beginning of the last rebuild. 2122. I just felt like there was a lack of urgency. I want to get your guys' opinion on it. In terms of, yeah, we want sustained success, but it needs to start at some point. When is that success going to start? And I think 2025 is as good a time as any when you consider. It's been five full years, you know, forget 2020, since the playoff appearance. It is Jedhoyer's final year. You know, he didn't have to draw the line in the sand saying, it's playoffs or bust. But he certainly could have indicated a little bit more urgency after a half decade of not making the postseason. So it felt like a presser from a few years ago. And I don't think that's a good thing. - Yeah, I was more than a little. I rate this morning when I was talking with hoodie. When I hear outperform projections, how about Jedhoyer's projections? And most of the help has to come internal. Look, Jesse, I know they've got a good system and people like some of these guys coming. But there's no guy there that you look and go, that's a future MVP. Like, what are we doing here? - Yeah, you know, it's interesting. The weather in Chicago wasn't great for them this year. The ballpark didn't play great, but it plays the same for most people. - Oh, what do you mean the weather? - No, no, the wind blew in more than out. All these things. - I don't want to hear that nonsense. I'm trying to get to a point that it plays the same for both teams. So even if individual numbers are a little depressed for the Cubs because they play 81 home games there, your sum should be better than your parts. And look at Milwaukee, I'm covering this team. Their sum is absolutely better than their parts. - Absolutely. And this is what the Cubs need to get to. Look, you've been here over a decade. You know the ballpark can play small. It can play big. Build your team accordingly. Someone asked him actually at the end of the season, we were talking about sort of the ballpark playing bigger this year. Well, maybe you need to get guys that hit 420 foot home runs instead of 380. You know, like, find an Aaron Judge, find a Bryce Harper. This is something that we've talked about at Nauseam. - That was cost money, Jesse. - Yeah, they cost money. And they also mean you need to make some bold moves to do it too. And that could mean trading from your farm system. It just felt like another sort of conservative rhetoric from a front office that I think most fans feel like they need to be a little bit more aggressive. - So let me ask you a question. When Jed sits up there, how come he doesn't give, like what council said, we got to start thinking about building 90 wind teams here. Like, why does Jed not walk up there and go, look, what you watch this year is unacceptable. Dan's B has to be better offensively. It's nothing I'm telling you all here today that I haven't told him already. He's a pro. He knows that. And guess what? We've got to be better here. We got to do this better. It's on me. I did not have a closer at the start of the year. That mistake won't be made again for lack of effort. There won't be a lack of effort. We don't hear any of that nonsense. - I'm going to disagree a little bit. Look, he didn't say it as directly as that. But he did mention a few of those things in his own way. But you know how they're not going to throw a player under the bus as directly as you just did. St. Dan's B has to be better. He's not going to do that. But he did say some of those things. He has to be better. We have to be better. He did say that stuff. But I'm with you on exceeding your own expectations. Why not raise the expectations of each player by getting better players? I know what he's saying. Every playoff team has players that exceed their internal expectations. I get that. But look, I'd rather have some guarantees in the back pocket. Like the Phillies do. Like the Dodgers do. Like the Yankees do. And maybe it's easier. It's easier to spend that time. And yeah, that's easier said than done. But these teams are doing it. Why can't you do it? So it's back to this very conservative, conservative nature. The whole organization has. And eventually maybe it will pay off. But man, do we really have to wait six, seven years to get one playoff season? And then maybe there's some sustained success. So that's my biggest point. I mentioned to Waddle and Silvie. I love sustained success. Everyone does. When's it going to start? Jesse, I told Cap earlier. I go, I can't stomach the winter of Belanger again. We can't just spend the whole winter and the winter meetings about whether or not the Cubs are going to get Belanger or not. I just want to know, do you believe that the Cubs could be on other Boris clients? Do you see them going after a Blake Snell, Peter Lanzo, Bregman, Corbin Burns? Do you believe that they'll be in the mix for that in the winter meetings? I think, you know, I'm going to take the easy road and say, I think he's going to talk to them about all those players. Are they going to pay top dollar? I highly doubt it, but it wouldn't shock me if they signed a Boris client. It's not impossible. Now that they've had a little bit more dealings with him when it came to Belanger now twice, I think they're more open to it. But as I documented all last season, they have not signed a Belanger client to a long-term deal in a long time. Belanger kind of counts, but they were opt-outs there. So sure, he's going to talk to them about those guys, but does he take the big swing? I don't know the answer. Should he take the big swing? Absolutely. Final point. I think it's pretty obvious, you know, read between the lines talking to Boris, people, and listen to Jed yesterday, that Belanger will opt out. And this time they won't resign him, not with cheap labor and center and cheap labor at first. I don't think Belanger's back. I think Jed made that clear yesterday. Alonzo cap, if you had Alonzo, then Bush would play where? Maybe you played Bush at second, you trade Niko Horner. I think Niko's getting traded. But would you want Alonzo on the team, right, if you could? I'd rather trade for Vlad Guerrero. Like what if I said to them up in Toronto, "Give me Guerrero." Now again, I got to sign him. "Give me Guerrero, I'll give you Bush, Horner, and a prospect." Does that work? At least one prospect, but you're getting closer. Yeah. I mean, you give me two starting players. Yeah, you're getting closer. I mean, it just depends on if Toronto wants to sort of start over. But, you know, when you give them up starting for a space, when it's starting a second base, then that's not really starting over. Yes, you could. That's what I've said this to you guys. You could overwhelm the Toronto Blue Jays. It's not going to be that hard. You have the prospect base to do it. Heck, I told you this. But buddy of mine said, "Send them parades too. Give them three starting infielders for Vlad Guerrero." And that's not crazy. Yeah, then go sign Willie Adamas to play third. Yeah, exactly. You and I talked about that at the White Sox game. Absolutely. Adamas, I think, would be open to that. And then you could rest hands. There's so many options. So, yeah, I would overwhelm Toronto to trade for Vlad. Pete Alonso did not have the best year, but he still is dangerous. He played 162 games. Yeah, many times as he strike out too. Yeah, I wouldn't give him 200 million. I wouldn't. But I'd give him 120, 130, 140, 150, somewhere in that range, because there's something about, you know, guaranteed power, and especially right-handed power at regular. Like that's 30 to 35 for sure. And that's, these days not easy for a couple of players to get to 30 home runs. So, you know, he's not as sexy as he was a year to go along. So, but he's darn good. And I consider it. I do think they'll make a trade. Like you said, Cap, whether it be Horner and Bush. I think they do like Bush. You could move him over to second. You know, you're not going to get the Gold Glove defense. But this is a perfect cup. He makes no money and he's a middle player. He's okay. Right. Fine. You're not wrong. You're not wrong to some of that. You need danger. You need the opponent on the mound to be scared of what you're seeing. You heard what James said. Yeah. He said 16 17 teams ruled in the Chicago and they were like, Oh, God, we got to play that team. He said they were scared. Now? Yeah. Whatever. Jesse, let's talk about the series that you're in with Milwaukee and the Mets. Interesting story because the Mets early in that playing well, they caught fire and it was able to beat the Braves to get into the playoffs here a couple of days ago. And I saw the Brewers almost wired to wire for them to be in this spot. I know I saw you talk to a Pat Murphy. What's is there a distinct difference at all between the Brewers under counsel and now under Murphy that you've heard? I will say there. They're a little bit looser. It is a little bit of different vibe. He brings and he was a college coach for so many years. He brings a little bit of a college atmosphere. He's got like a council. I mean, yeah, let's talk about this on the broadcast. He's got like a council of elders that he he can be. They meet once a month as a team. Most teams don't schedule meetings that often. It's a little bit more of a college vibe. But look, Murphy and council are very much linked together. In fact, they both sort of joke that they they learned everything they know from the other guy. So, I mean, I don't know who is the mentor and who is the student, but so it's a little bit more of a college vibe to it. But, you know, they played a terrible, terrible inning yesterday blew up defensively. He made a move that's questionable, pulled his pitcher after four innings and 68 pitchers. So, they're under scrutiny today. We'll see if they survive. But man, the Mets have something going and getting back to, you know, sort of the Cubs thing. Like, how the Mets are doing it? Well, Francisco Lindor, they have a star putting them on his back and carrying them and leading them and saying the right things. You know, and, you know, the Cubs kind of, like every team, every, every good team, great team, meet that kind of guy, right? Lindor's going to finish second in MVP voting. So, the Mets have a little mojo going. We'll see if the Brewers can now respond today. Jesse, have a great day, man. Okay, boys, talk to you later. Tell Brad I'm a little frustrated with him. You got to be beyond that. I'm not expecting you to go get Soto and Santander and Garrett Cole or Corbin Burt. I'm not asking for that. I'm asking you get a freaking closer and add a big bat. It's not too much to ask for with your ATM machine ballpark. And boy, there's so many revenue streams coming out of there throughout the fall and winter. You've got hockey in there, you've got the winter solace. What is it? The, the, the, the. Oh, the Chris Kindle market. Yeah. Winter Wonderland. Yeah. Yeah. It's all awesome stuff. Yeah.
