I do want to ease into this bear's conversation with you. - Okay. - So let's go back yesterday. We were talking a little bit about the most valuable bear. - Yes. - And so, you know, previously on Captain Jay. - We were discussing the most valuable bear. - Uh-huh. - And the topic came up because it was part of five burning questions that we have every Wednesday at 735, where I'm asking five questions about the Chicago Bears. And so, I asked at the top of it, who is the most valuable bear? And Cap is kind of looking up in the sky, looking around, and just like that, you know, because the ball club is two and two. And there's been some good, and there's been some questionable with this bear's team. Not bad, but there's been some questionable here. - There's been some bad. - A lot of thoughts. - Well, the offensive line. - Yeah. - But I mean, but to the point where, I don't think it is going to break the Chicago Bears. I don't think it's going to break it totally. - Yeah. - It's struggling, that is for sure. So, I said that it's Jalen Johnson, that should be the most valuable bear. And Cap said, Jaquan Brisker. And that could be prisoner of the moment. Brisker had a tremendous game last time out. - Yeah, yeah. - It was tremendous. After his penalty, he had the on, he was tremendous. - Yeah. - All of them in the interception, the sack. I mean, he led the team in tackles. He was fantastic. And so, I said Jalen Johnson, Cap said Jaquan Brisker. And on the pole at ESPN 1000 on Twitter, there was four choices. Andrew Billings, Montes Sweat, Jaquan Brisker, Jalen Johnson. So, if I asked you, who would be the most valuable bear through the first four games you'd say? - I don't know. I mean, I don't know. Of those four? I mean, if I'm making for those four, I would say Andrew Billings, but that's-- - Oh, that's interesting. - That's who he's been so dominant and so essential. And he's not made a lot of mistakes, so we don't hear his name a lot. He's just made more impact, which is good. Of that group, I don't know. They don't have one person, I don't think, who has been elite, like super elite. I don't think so. In moments, in moments, Kyla Gordon's been flying around the field. In moments, I feel like we've seen, he's been everywhere. Tyrek Stevenson has has his moments. At Tori Taylor has been outrageous in his role when he's recovered from, didn't have a great game against the Colts, but what he was able to do against the Rams. I don't know, no one in particular, I don't, I agree with the, what we're going for here is that no one on offense has been. - Well, that says a lot, doesn't it? - It does. - Especially for a season when you have Shane Waldron, who turned, you know, Smith's career around. And so nobody on the pole and no one called in yesterday that said anyone on offense, but also what it's glaring is, is that no one mentioned Caleb Williams, except Sylvie. Sylvie did text me and said, I think it could be, it could be Caleb Williams. What does that say, Dion, for this team that's two and two, an impressive win against the Rams, in which if I asked you the most valuable bear, and just to qualify, just try to make it clear what MVP is, like if you took this player off the team, the team would have a problem. It's like most valuable player. - Right, right. - If a player off the team, then the team would have problems being able to win or score, or whatever the issue is. So what's your team? - At this point, I don't think that's Caleb. - Okay. - Maybe eventually it will be, but at this, based on the evidence presented, I don't think it's him. - So what you're saying to me is, is that if Caleb Williams was not starting, it was Tyson Beijing, the Bears would be two and two. - They could be, yes. And that's believable, yeah. - Do you think they would be? Because what we're saying is, is that with the two and two, and we know the story, the story is Caleb Williams is trying to get comfortable with the offense, overshooting receivers, as we've seen with Roma Dunezay on the sidelines, or DJ Moore on the sidelines. We've seen this. - Yes. - And last time we saw Tyson Beijing, in those four games that he played last year, he was throwing it for me to you. Lot of three and five yard passes, which you see a lot over the NFL. Just keep the line moving. - Just efficient, not, like he just, yes. - And then we had to open it up, then there was interceptions, if you remember, in that Charger game, last year. The LA Charger game last year. - I think it was. - The Sunday night game. So I'm just saying, I'm asking like if Tyson Beijing was the starter, you'd say that the Bears are still two and two. - Yeah, I mean, none of that is outrageous. I would never argue, there's no way. I mean, I wouldn't argue that. But I see what, when Sylvie says that, you know, Caleb could be the most valuable bear right now, I think that's also off the field. There's part of that leadership that comes from that, that isn't necessarily the box score, that has made him super valuable through these first few weeks. I mean, for him as a rookie, to be a part of that group, it was him and Mercedes Lewis and Colcomette, right, who sat down with Shane Waldron, for him as a rookie to do that and to be the guy that everyone's gravitating towards. I think that makes him super valuable. - I mean, beyond the box score. - But nobody, nobody on offense, huh? - No, not at this point. - Do you see our poll question where it's leading? It's nipping tuck actually, pretty close. - And you allowed the voters to choose or did you give them names? - Well, you see it right there. We gave four choices that were mentioned on the show. - Right. - And of course, you could always use other for the comments. But so far, 30% of people at ESPN 1000 say Jaquan Brisker is the most valuable bear. Followed by Jalen Johnson at 29, 28%. Andrew Billings, 25 and Montes Sweat, 17%. - So what our listeners and viewers are saying is that if you take Jaquan Brisker off the team, okay, so now you're a little bit less than in the secondary. Not sure about that. I think they have so many players in the secondary that could be able to make do. If you, 'cause you still have Tyrek Stevenson, you still have Bayard, you still have Jalen Johnson and Tyler Gordon. - Yeah, yeah. - And some, and John the no one's very solid as a backup in Elijah Hicks. So I think your secondary is fine. I just think that says a lot. When we can't determine the most valuable bear, it says a lot to where the bears are right now through four games. Still trying to find themselves. - Correct, correct. And, and Maddie Riflu said yesterday that after four games, you're starting to kind of figure out who we are. And I asked Caleb, like, do you have a better sense of what this offense is? He says we're starting to figure it out. They're just in, in the early stages of finding an identity. I don't know that they have one yet. I wouldn't point to one thing. - I think it's wild though that as we try to figure out who the bears are outside of running the football, and again, trying to establish a rapport for the quarterback, for Caleb Williams and Adunze, Caleb Williams and more. You know, same thing with Caleb and Keith and Allen. I think it's wild that once again, we're back to the defense carries the day and that there's nobody on the office side of the football that's valuable enough to be most valuable bear. - At four games then, at four games then. I would hope that that would change eventually, but that's been the identity of the bears for several years. - Yes, several meaning 50. - Right, exactly. You're exactly right. - Yes, 50 plus years or more. - Yeah. - So what if I made the case of Cole Comette, Dion? - Cole Comette has not, they have not utilized him the way that I think that they should. - I think it's coming around. - I hope so. - You remember the controversy early where Joe Everett was being utilized more. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - And I got that from Shane Waldron's standpoint. He's worked with Gerald Everett. - Yes. - So he trusts him, right. And I know that sounds strange because you've been in training camp and you've been in meetings and all this stuff when Waldron took the job. So you've seen plenty of film from last year to know who are the key players last year. Cole Comette would be one of them. And he didn't get the football. Cole did not belly ache about it as much. He didn't mention it. - No, because he's. - Yeah. - He's a professional. - Yeah, but he was, I think that he understood the situation and you saw how that turned around in the cult game where he was able to get more receptions. - Right. - A key catch in Sunday's game against the Rams. So I think that says a lot about where the bears are, that the bears and other. And I think at some point, when we come back around the next four weeks, five weeks that Caleb Williams would probably be in that conversation most valuable bear. - I think so too. As he's becoming, and he said as he's becoming more comfortable in what's being asked of him and moving through his reads quicker, I think he will be eventually. It's four games in, I mean, they could be one and three. They could easily be one and three at this point, right? And that would be even more frustrating. So two and two through the first four games, everybody's trying to figure things out. I mean, that sounds middle of the road. I guess that's who they are, but I just don't, no one has stepped up to be elite on this team. Like, no one has in moments, but not collectively. - So Deanna, I have you down for Andrew Bellings. - Yes. - Without Andrew Bellings, what would the defense look like? - I don't think the up front end would look good at all. I really think he's that important. And they would say that too. - You know, Javon Dexter's senior would like to have a word. - Yeah, well, he's also very valuable. I agree, I agree, I agree. But they work well together. That group does. And Sweat hasn't had the stats that you would expect because he's always been double team. So it's, oh gosh, that was really loud. - I didn't hear anything, what happened? - Wow, that really startled me. - You were saying about Sweat? - Yeah. (cheering) I got it. - You were saying? - Not anymore. - You had a thought about Montes Sweat, please go ahead. - I was just saying that that's why his stats haven't been as correct. We haven't been saying his name as much. - Because it would, yeah, you'd lay it out for her. And here's the thing, the storyline coming in was it's Montes Sweat, and as Jay Moore says, it's Montes Sweat in the drips. Who else was gonna be able to get to the quarterback? - Yeah, right. - There you go. - Nice. - So who else is gonna, and so now we see Dexter making plays, Billings making plays, Demarcus Walker. So the team, right? - He is. - Sure. - As far as I know, as far as I know, I usually check his name when I do roll call every day at play with it, so I'm pretty sure he's still there. - So, let's over the phone lines, 'cause we got plenty on the Bears here in our first hour, 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. Let's ask this question for you, the Bear fan, regarding Caleb Williams. He's always a hot topic everywhere, 'cause he's a number one pick, and he's a Chicago Bears quarterback. Does Caleb Williams have to be the most valuable bear in the next four weeks? Do you think that he has to be? Again, it's about scoring points, it's about being able to get better the quarterback positions, about him not getting run over, 'cause of a leaky offensive line. Oh, that's actually, you know it? - That's a brother of a former bear. - The brother of a former bear, Chris Long, was on The Rich Eisen Show. And so Chris was talking about Caleb Williams and Shane Waldron and the offense. See if he could poke holes in anything that he's saying right here, Chris Long, talking about Caleb Williams and the Bears' offense. Listen. - Oh, a lot. I mean, I don't know what their identity is, honestly. I mean, like, I'm not making an excuse to the kid because I don't think he's playing as well as Jane Daniels, like, period. And if you'd asked me coming out who the best quarterback was in this class, I would have said Jane Daniels. And I told you, if Chicago makes this trade, you have to be ready for a little bit of a disappointment early where it's like, you're not ready to win now. Like, you were ready to build towards winning now. Last year, if you had, you know, accepted some of the, you know, the assets you'd get out of that hall if you traded out of the pick. And like, maybe you could fortify your team. And like, as evidence, like Justin Fields in the second half of the day, Pittsburgh, whatever, say, hey, we don't have to wait to get down to use him. I do think there's a starting quarterback in there. And I think with Chicago's defense, that team was ready to win this year. But as long as you're willing to play the long game, and that might include sifting through some scheme issues, and some of the, hey, we couldn't get the online patched up, even though people told me it was like the best situation in the history of football for a rookie QB, and then a couple, they're making excuses for the rookie. The rookie can do some special things, I see it. But, you know, in general, I haven't seen him move the pocket enough. I really like him throwing on the run. I don't mean to be like kind of surface level, but that's one thing that jumped out of me watching him the other day. And then, you know, there are throws he could hit before the half in the red zone. But I'm also watching him two weeks ago. And when your offensive coordinator is blocking a guy with a 94 number with a guy wearing an 11, like that's a problem down on the goal line. And then when you go and speed option off of that, into that look like, I just don't know if they know what the identity of that offense is yet. Now Swift had a good game the other day, so it's something you've built on. - So thoughts there from Chris Long on The Rich Eisen Show. Everything he said there, can you poke holes in it? - I mean, none of it's wrong. I don't know that if they had kept Justin Fields, they'd be ready to win with that defense. I don't know that that was, I felt like that's what he was saying. And they're not ready to win now, I agree with that. - They're not? - No. - The Bears are not ready to win now? - No, and what he said about the, I mean, we all said that, we knew that they were gonna, I mean, I figured nine wins was a great improvement, right? - I'm a nine and eight in sneaking in the playoffs. That's, well, that's winning. That's, well, it's better than seven wins last year. - That's, yes, incremental progress. Someone once famously said that's all we're trying to do is incremental progress. What he said about Shane Waldron, though, we don't know what their identity is, they, right, correct. That is factual, that is factual. I don't know what it is yet. They don't have one aspect. They feel like it's coming along. Well, what are they gonna be? What do you see? How do you, like, what do you think they're gonna be? Are they gonna be a past heavy offense? Is that gonna be where it all comes together? I mean, that-- - I think that Shane Waldron has to understand balance. I think that, I think, I don't think it's as far fetched as what Bill Belichick told Pat McAfee saying that, well, it's gonna be November, December, January, and the ball's gonna be in the air 50 times. He does think that that's good for the Chicago Bears. I don't think that's what it is. I think that Waldron is having a come to Jesus moment understanding that, hey, you're gonna have to be able to run the football a number of times to get the rookie quarterback and kill if William's comfortable and the offensive line comfortable. - Well, shouldn't he have met Jesus like in March or April when he got the job and he suddenly has all these weapons? Like, shouldn't he have had that moment then of, wow, look at this talent. And what you just said in our last segment, when we were talking about how he knows Gerald Everett and whatever, he should know the Bears personnel. He should know what Colcomech should can do. Colcomech's not been in the league that long. It shouldn't take him long to go through what he's the tapes of what he can do for this offense. Like, he should have prepared that way to help run this offense. And I don't know that he did. If he did, he decided to take that information and say, yeah, that's nice. I'm still gonna do what I wanna do. - And that's the whole thing about the genius offensive coordinator. - Well, and what did they do? They didn't want Luke Getzi, right? Because he couldn't adjust to his personnel. Well, then why did you hire a guy who's not adjusting to his personnel? Like, why did you do that? - It's a great point. It's a great point. The points that Chris Long made talking about not ready to win now, I don't agree with, I believe that it is the team that's ready to win. It's a defense that's ready to win and it's an offense that's coming along. And so it's not broken. I'd rather be the Bears than the Titans. I'd rather be the Bears than the Jags. - No, I agree with, oh, I'd rather be the Bears than the Jags, yes, correct. I don't think it's broken, but I also don't think it's moments from hitting its stride. And what he said, I mean, yes, he came into the best situation for a rookie quarterback, but still a rookie, still a rookie, right? So there are growing pains with that. - He says that he liked to see Caleb Williams of the offense move the pocket more. That's fair. - Yeah. - That's fair, but again, I'm not looking for him to be Patrick Bihomes in the first four games of the season. That's the whole thing, but when you're gonna restart the quarterback clock by having a rookie quarterback and especially the number one pick, there's gonna be some growing pains there. I said this in the spring, so this is, I know that for this audience they get tired of me saying it, but I mean, it's just, that's just the fact. It's not just Caleb Williams, it's anybody that's a rookie in that spot where it's not, you're not going to learn everything Deon sonically in game one. There's gonna be times where he's gonna have to learn. Moving to pocket, that's a Shane Waldron thing. And it's an offense thing that maybe he will grow into as the season progresses. - Yeah, yeah. He's gonna have to, but here's the difference. I hear in Caleb Williams based on what we heard from the last couple of rookie quarterbacks the Bears have tried to make superstars is I hear him understanding the growing pains and not getting discouraged about it. Yesterday he even said not keeping my head down too long, moving on to the next thing, that's part of his growth and figuring it out. And I think that he is, I think he's evolving and maturing and understanding and he keeps pointing back to the fact that it had been so long since he'd played competitive football and been hit that much. And I think that's, there's something to that too. There's something to that too. I mean, you can feel like a world beater in shells, you know what I mean? You're not even having the pads on and you're like, "Wow, we are gonna be great." And then you start playing real opponents and it doesn't look the same. - It does not. - It does not. Long also says that he doesn't feel like this team is built. I guess what you're saying is that people said that this is a perfect opportunity for Caleb Williams to go into this offense because of more Adunze and Kean Allen and Cole Comette. I think it's, I think it still is. It just has to be able to manifest itself into wins. - Yeah. - That's all it is. Like again, look at all the rookie quarterbacks, Dion. And usually in this situation, I'm just being vague, but usually in this situation, it's a rookie quarterback that has one weapon, one veteran wide receiver that's there, or one tight end. But in this situation, a rookie quarterback comes in. He's got three wide receivers. He's got two tight ends. So, and he's got, I think a good enough running game for them to be able to flourish. This is with Roshan Johnson, this is with Khalil Herbert and DeAndre Swift, the veteran. So, it is an opportunity for the Bears and for the offense to get going because I can't give you a quarterback coming out of the draft that has these many weapons for him to utilize. Not guys that are just middling on the scrap heap. These are players, these are dogs. - Yeah, they are. They just have to be used in the right way. And working on that chemistry and connection, I appreciated that the exchange he and DJ Moore had when they weren't on the same page on Sunday. And then they figured it out. I think that's a sign that they're willing to work through things and not get frustrated with each other, but move forward in the right direction together, like all pulling in the same direction. - Does Caleb Williams have to be the most valuable bear the next four weeks? Let's talk about it, 3-1-2-3-3-2, ESPN, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number. Speaking of DJ Moore and Caleb Williams, say a rift there. Shay, what do you have for us on shot or no shot on a glorious day as the Tigers get the job done. And my San Diego Padres, they continue on as well. - For the Friar Faithful. - That's right. - All right, when a trade pops up in the NFL or a trade request, rather, as it did this week with Devonta Adams, so do the rumors. And the formerly proud Sports Illustrated has thrown the Bears into the mix for Devonta Adams, saying the Bears have run zero 10 or one personnel plays this year. What that means is you'd have one running back and four wide receivers. And with a glut of receiver, if they added Adams, they'd have Adams, Alan, Moore, and O'Dunze, it would allow them to go to four receiver sets more than any team in the league. I don't view this as anywhere close to a position of need, but shot or no shot, the Bears should be involved in Devonta Adams trade talk. - That's a no shot. - No shot. - That's a no shot. - A trade, no shot. - You went through, you got your receiver again. - I think for some it's controversial that they even got Roma Dunze, 'cause now the revisions history is, there should have been an offensive lineman. - Right. - But I still believe it was fine, because you know that Kean Allen, I would say 90% of me believes that Kean Allen won't be here next year anyway. Roma Dunze will fill that slot. That's why Kean is here for third down, and he's often injured, so that's why Roma Dunze is gonna be filling the bill. So, unfortunately, the Bears are not in a position to get a wide receiver, so that's a no shot. - Yeah, I agreed, no shot. They're not, I don't even think they'd be interested in pursuing in any capacity. - And the Raiders have said it's going to cost at least a second round pick. - Yeah, they wouldn't do that. - Shara, no shot, Adams is really hurt with the hamstring. - I think no shot. He's totally-- - No shot, he's fine. - Yeah, come on. He was milking this injury to get himself back with Aaron Rodgers. Or Jordan Love. I think the Packers might be interested, Christian Watson's down again. - Yes, yes. And by the way, we saw that snowball running downhill. We knew he wasn't gonna be a raider for the long haul. Just wasn't, it just wasn't gonna happen. We saw this last year. - You knew that, you knew that. He was upset when Carr left. Like he didn't, that's the reason he wanted to go there, right? - Yeah, so. - So, agreed. - Shane Norley. - All right, hoodie, uncorked that sound you wanted to play now. DJ Moore yesterday talked about a surprising thing he noticed from Roma Dunezay, his speed. - Woo! - Is that what you wanted? - No, DJ Moore on a Dunezay. - Okay. - That shoot, he'd be rolling off the ball. They all seen him on film. Like this past weekend, I think he took off on a road that was wide open. I was like, "Damn, he moving." I hadn't even seen him out the side of my eye. I was like, "Am I going slower?" Or is he just moving fast? But just his speed and confidence out there, just going out there, playing through. - So this also shows up on the stat sheet because Roma Dunezay, believe it or not, currently ranks third among all wide receivers in separation created. He's been fantastic in route running and obviously the breakout game against Indianapolis. We'd like to see more of that from Roma Dunezay, but shot or no shot. Rome could be poised to take the wide receiver one role on this team. - That is a shot. - Absolutely, sorry, you go first. - No, we could say it together. Ready? One, two, three, that's a shot. - That's a shot. - Isn't that great? - It's kubaya. - We just love to get along, don't we? - Yes, we do, yes we do. It is a shot. Why do you think it's a shot, the all? - Well, first of all, separation created is something we keep track of. - Yeah. - I'm too tired. Okay, anyway. - Why are you tired of stats? Why does that make you tired? - That's not, that's, I just don't think that's a thing. How do you really measure that? Like, I don't understand. - It's like anything else. You take the stats that you want to use and the rest of them, if you don't need them, you don't need them. - That feels like something we're just trying to use to fill between Sundays, but whatever, I digress. Because of-- - There's a valuable statistic that tells you how good a wide receiver is breaking away from coverage on a route. - Okay. - Top three separation created against man coverage means he's owning corners. - I'm gonna use, I'm gonna find a way to use that in my story. - I think you do. - You put that on channel seven. That's toward the end of your wrap, by the way, and then see what the anchors say. (laughing) - I'm gonna say it on a toss back. So, do you guys know? - Yeah. - Third of the league in separation created. - What? - Against man coverage. - Against man coverage. - Really interesting. We better get to the weather quickly 'cause I have no ad lib. - I don't know what's happening. (laughing) - Okay, so why I think that? - Well, first of all, we know what a Dunes A's work ethic is. I think that, but also his talent, his speed, he's got everything to be a top wide receiver in the league, everything. And it just has to come together. But also the fact that he and Caleb are on that same track, I feel like that will make him the top receiver on the table. - Shay, when you have someone like Roma Dunes A, who we watched in college, and the separation he was getting in college, ultimately when you have that kind of talent, you think about him as the one at some point very soon anyway. - DJ Moore's got a lot of miles on him. Doesn't mean he's old, doesn't mean he's washed, not saying he's trash, I'm not saying that. But ultimately, Roma Dunes A is going to be the number one wide receiver on this Chicago Bears team. And he and Caleb Williams will grow up together as Chicago Bears. That's gonna be the one two punch at some point. Right now, DJ Moore is the number one receiver. It's not gonna be that way forever, it's not. And so yes, Roma Dunes A at some points can be number one. And I know there are some people that say this should have been an offensive lineman instead, but you do need to have speed. Just think about the previous depth charts we've seen from the Bears, Dion, over the years, where it's just one guy. DJ Moore was by himself for a couple of years here. - Yeah. - So, you know, I have no problem with him at some point being number one. And I think he's gonna be sooner than later. Shay Norlin. - All right, yesterday the Tigers eliminated Houston Astros from the playoffs, ending a seven year streak of making the American League Championship Series. - Yes. - Astros star infielder, Alex Breggman, who is a pending free agent this offseason, tweeted after the game, quote, thank you, Houston, in an apparent farewell to the Astros organization. Breggman's gonna be 31, he hit 260 this season with 26 homers and 70 RBIs for the Astros. Shot or no shot, the Chicago Cubs should sign Alex Breggman this offseason. - That's a shot. That's a shot. He is a Boris guy and the Chicago Cubs, they can't just be middling and just saying, we like our guys and we're just gonna make a cursory move here or there. If nothing else, teams that spend a lot of money like the Chicago Cubs have to be on the sidelines, watching these playoffs Dion sand. Wait a minute, what's missing? You know what's missing? Talent. Stars. - Yeah, yeah. - I already told Shay, do not put in the rundown of our shows over the winter of Cody Bellinger. - Oh my gosh. - I don't wanna do that again. - We're not doing that again. - I don't wanna do that again. - We went through that already last year of, will Cody sign? Will he not sign? Will he be with the Cubs? Like, if we are once again, Shay, talking about Cody Bellinger being with the Cubs as if that's a difference maker, then I'll just leave. I'm not going to be, we're not going to be dealing with that this winter into the spring. 'Cause Cody Bellinger is at the difference between you getting the playoffs and not. You know, I know, I lived in the Cubs this year. He's not the difference between you making the playoffs or not. It's not. - No. - Stars do that. Stars make that difference. So, Breggman on the Cubs team, I think that that would make a lot of sense. - The only reason I would lean more towards no shot is because Jed was so, he was so, I don't know, focused on talking about youth and our young players and Breggman at 30 years old, I don't know that that's the direction he would go. I don't know. That's what leads me to thinking it's no shot. - Okay, then the Brewers will just kick your ass again. You want that? - Probably. - Okay. - We're going to feisty Craig Council again. - Okay. - I just know that Craig Council did not sign up here in a bigger market, making more money to be out of the playoffs. - Correct. - He's looking on the other side of that saying, that's my team. - Right. - That's my team. My team is on the precipice. - We were 10 games behind them, but it wasn't close. - There's a reason why there's a lot of firings over there. - Also, I don't feel like the Cubs have that alpha guy who is a voice in that clubhouse. - Nope. - That can stand up and say, let's get it together. And I don't think they have that. - You had to develop that with Rizzo Abayas and Bryant. - Right. - And Lester and guys like that. - But Rizzo was that guy, Lester was that guy. - Yeah, you had to develop that. That's not on this ball club. - No, it isn't. Is Breggman that kind of guy? - I think he's gonna have to be. He's gonna have to be. Just think about that, Shay. How much money that the Cubs have spent? And I know that Cap has gone through this chapter in verse. But just the point is, is that how much money have you spent? And what have you spent it on? Non playoff team, over $230 million to be on the sidelines? Nonsense. And if they don't spend more money and get more talent over there, difference making talent. - I know that my partner's always talking about the bullpen. - If they only had, does hitting matter at all in baseball? Does offense ever matter? I'm watching the playoffs. I think offense matters. Like, you could tell me about the bullpen all you want and who's gonna close in the ninth. But if you can't hit the baseball, you'll never see the closer. - And that, exactly. Closer to me is just the most overrated thing in playoff baseball because you have to get to him. And if you don't get to him, then he doesn't matter. Over the course of 162 games, closing games is important. But in the playoffs, it doesn't really matter. You gotta be able to get a lead and get to that guy. - Blown saves are blown saves. But by the way, with those blown saves, does that necessarily mean you would've won those ballgames? So I think it's offense. - No, no. - So that's, it's what cap hangs his head on. And that's fine. At some point, he's gonna be on Shay's side and my side that stars help a lot. - Yeah, a lot. - A lot. We go around the NFL coming up, and don't forget it's the Deal Breakers Thursday. So many features, so many shows. As we try to keep D on up, as we go around the NFL. - Listen, I don't usually get up this early. No, that's a lie, I do. I just don't usually have to be on this early. - I know, I know, I know, I know, it's fine. - D on, you're always on. - You're right. - Yes, because you're a mess. - This is true. - Here's Shay Norlick, Shay. - All right, let's get started around the NFL. - How are you in here? - It is Thursday, so this is the day where I tell you what I need to see from certain teams on Sunday. - Okay. - I wanna start believing in them again. - All right. - I'm gonna start locally with the Chicago Bears. I need you to go out class and inferior team. The Panthers are beyond banged up. Their best defensive players, their most talented defensive players, they aren't gonna play in this game because of injury. Their offense has looked better since changing quarterbacks, but I would say this is a significant step up in class for Carolina's offense. Going against the Bears defense instead of the Raiders or the Bengals. I need to see the Bears win this game comfortably and convincingly in what I think should be a coming out party for Caleb Williams against the team that traded the pick he was to us. - Yes, more than the four points that they're favored. And getting off to a quick start too, the staff that start in the first quarter and the set, like what are we going? You heard the Boo Birds early in the game of Soldier Field. - I did. - Enough of that. - Hey man, you know what I'd like? I'd like for the key drive in which you saw, I think I'll run from Caleb, definitely running the football. A few passes just to get comfortable and keep the line moving offensively. I'd like to see that in the first quarter. - I would agree with you. This is a perfect opportunity to do that. Those 15 scripted plays or whatever they have, like attack that, attack that in a way that builds that confidence for Caleb and then that gives them momentum to keep going. I agree with you guys. That's something we have not seen in a minute, not just this season, like in a minute. - Let's say the being unsure as offense. Like, are we sure we do this? So we go long? - Right, just do it. - Just get comfortable in the offense and then move forward. - What messing around? It's that top corner. - You have a deep enough, you have a big enough lead. You could take some shots down the field if you want to, but to me, it's got to be colored by the numbers, move the offense and then see what you could do after that in the fourth quarter. - And like, Wado was telling us yesterday, let all of your receivers run all of the routes, enough with clear out DJ Moore. Like, DJ Moore's an excellent route runner. Let him run the full tree. I don't get why he's just being asked to exclusively run goals. Makes no sense. - All right, what else do you need to see here for this week? - The New York Jets. - Okay, all right, the Jets, all right. - So far this season, it has been about the coaching staff. Nathaniel Hackett, questions about him as an offensive coordinator, wait for it again, because they could only score nine points against the Denver Broncos, questions about Nathaniel Hackett, questions about Robert Sala, you get penalized 14 times against Denver at home, your offensive line, pre-snap penalties galore, the cadence for Aaron Rodgers, you play the Vikings early Sunday morning in London. If there's any quarterback in football that I want diagnosing a Brian Flores blitz before the snap, I think it's Aaron Rodgers. I need to see Rodgers turn the clock back, diagnose the Flores defense and eat against the Vikings in London. If I'm gonna believe that this team's a playoff team, I need to see it this week. - Let's keep our eyes on the Jets offensive line too, because Aaron likes to be able to have enough time to be able to roll on the pocket, he doesn't want to move in the pocket. Even at his age, he still can run left and run right. Let's see if he can connect, but that offensive line will be very key for the elder statesman, Rodgers at the quarterback position. But you went, I think the chase is correct because we've seen the Vikings, they're gonna dial up a blitz early and often against that old-timer. - Yeah, Vikings have looked very much like a complete team right now, but agreed, agreed, that game against the Broncos was atrocious for the Jets, they have to bounce back in a very big way. But they're not, they're not leaving for London until later on tonight, which I don't know, is that the best way to go? - It's Thursday. - I know, is that a good move or a bad move? I don't know, we shall see. Both teams are gonna have to deal with the time change. I think that becomes a moot point. I think the Jets can win this game and if they want, again, if they want me to believe that they're a playoff team, they gotta win this one. You gotta show me that Rodgers can still figure it out. - Shay, you know they're gonna drop it, right? - Oh, yeah, totally. - The Jets are gonna drop it. Even though, all right, in front of me, it's two and a half, Minnesota is about two and a half, but I just, I just think that this whole thing is a disaster. - I do see them. - Salah will be fired at the end of the season. I just think. Just not a very good communicator, Shay. That's the whole thing. You be bad, but if you're not on the same page with a Hall of Fame quarterback, it just, it tells you all you need to know. - Yeah. - But his defense is solid. - Yeah. - Sounds familiar. - Then they're gonna trade for Davante Adams. Go ahead, let Joe Douglas, the GM you're gonna fire at the end of the year, decide what you do with your second round pick next season. Go ahead. - Oh my gosh. - But Salah's defense, Salah. - We know that story. We've seen that movie before. - I think we're watching it together. - Yeah, we are. - Pass them popcorn. - Sounds good. - I think we're watching it right now. Shay, what else do we need to see here? - Since an anti-bangles, 0 and 3 start. - Stinks. And so does this Bengals defense, but Joe Barrow has quietly been playing some extremely high level football since the lost to New England and the opener. He's completing 71% of his passes for seven touchdowns, just one interception. If the Bengals can beat the Ravens at home, big win over a divisional opponent and get to two and three. Will there be anybody left doubting that they can turn this season around and get to the playoffs? This could totally change the story on their season. - I don't, I'm not sure. - I'm not either. - I'm not sure. 'Cause I don't know who the Bengals are. I know what they are now, but after the Ravens game, I think they will tell a great story. Giants, Browns, Eagles, the next three. And if they can get past the Ravens, Dion, then I think that that is, I think that's true. I think that the Bengals will get on a rhythm, be a Giants team that's not great, Browns are just awful. And then the Eagles. So I think this is probably the game that's circled for their season. And I'm not sure if they can master the test against the Ravens. - I don't know that they can either. I thought when they lost to the Patriots, I thought this is gonna be like the Bears when they beat the 49ers at the start, the season that we were all like, hey, remember how crazy that was that happened? That's what I thought was gonna happen. 'Cause the Bengals have Joe Burrow and they have all this stuff. But at this moment, I've not seen that they can truly turn it all the way around. - Shay, you agree though, that between these two teams, the Bengals are more the crossroads in the Ravens. - Oh, 5%. - Yes, yes, yes. - The Ravens seem to have it figured out. Their ground game looks like the best in football, 260 yards on the ground last week. And the Bengals defense just looks terrible offensively. I don't think they have issues defensively. I think they have a lot of issues. They gotta figure that side of it out. But if you go and win against Baltimore this week at home, you have the first win in the series in hand, you're moving to a tie in the division with Baltimore, Pittsburgh, I don't know that anybody believes is just gonna run away with this. It would change the story for the Bengals season if they can get a win on Sunday. - I would agree with you on that. I just don't know if it's gonna happen. - We'll see, NFL, this is why it's interesting. One thing I will not do, Shay, when it comes to the Ravens, I will not be like the TVs up here over our shoulders saying that this is the best team in football. I'm not doing that yet. I still wanna see more. The Chiefs lost, tough loss at the end. The Raiders was a clunker. They should have been able to win that game. Being the Cowboys, what's the value of being the Cowboys? Even though it was at Dallas. I mean, who's Dallas really? - They might not be good this year. - Offensively, Dallas looks terrible. Defensively, they're very susceptible to the run. - Now, the Bills win. - That was it. - That's how the win. - That was a great win. - Great win. - That was a dominant win. - So, I mean, I won't go as far as my friend Dominic Foxworth and others that say, well, this is the best team in the NFL. Okay, let's take a look now. 'Cause I think that Shay, you pinpointed it. Ravens, Bengals tells a great story on both sides. All right, can you squeeze in one more, please? - Do you want the Bills or the Chiefs? - I'll let you choose. - Oh, the Chiefs make you angry, so I want to hear about the Chiefs. - Four-nose, four-nose, but it don't really feel like it with how anemic this offense has looked for Kansas City. They are back at Arrowhead on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints. Chiefs, last few seasons, always start slow. We always kind of question, are they who they've been? And they answer that question in February, inevitably, when they win the Super Bowl. I'd like to see it a little earlier this year. Monday night, prime time at home against New Orleans. You gotta show me that this offense can move the football. Patrick Moms has not played good football this year. Six touchdowns, five interceptions, pass the ratings south of 90. I need to see this offense start to look good, which is gonna be tough because they lost for she rice. - I know. - I'll never bet. - How do you make that up? - I'll never bet it against them again. - Never? - No, never. - It's back to my homes. They'll figure it out, I think Moms always has confidence that they will, but adjusting to different personnel and moving things around. I don't know. - Have we been there before? The Chiefs? - Yeah, I guess so. - I'll never bet against them again. And Shay laid out all the points that are correct, that you need to be able to be more of a potent offense, but Moms finds a way. He just does. The Saints game, they will roll against the Saints. The 49ers, what are they now? Really without McCaffrey? - Look good against New England. - Okay. - But who won't? - We would look good against New England. We would look at it as a show. - Let's hope so. - Let's go, let's beat New England. They want that number one pixel, man. And the Raiders and the Buccaneers after that. I think they're gonna be okay. They'll turn it on when they have to turn it on. It's the old Golden State Warriors theory, Shay Norling. - Listen, last year I told you Kelsey in the regular season last year didn't look good, and then the playoffs is like the best player alive again. - Yeah. - Yeah. - This is your same thing. Like, my homes doesn't look great, Kelsey doesn't look great, and I'm sure once they get to play in football in January, which they will, both of them will look amazing, because that's just what this team does. - Oh, how much of that is Andy Reed? He's such a good coach. - Yeah. - A lot of it's coaching, right? I mean, they have talent, but... - How about Nagy? - Hello? Hello? - Hanging up now. Shay, let's do something. Let's do something that's going to go to Bristol. You and I are just real quick. Ready? Ready? Let's do this. Lower the music, Jaymore. Here we go. I want to make sure that they steal this on one of the talk shows up there. Or maybe this goes out fast one. Who knows? Shay, you ready? For the Kansas City Chiefs, the regular season doesn't matter. They've turned into an NBA team. They turn on when they got to turn on the playoffs. And so when we just laid out, missing rice, when Travis Kelsey, not as good as he once was, they just find a way to win and muddle through the regular season, because when the playoffs start, Patrick Mahomes will lead them, just like an NBA team. But I... - Sure. I have no disagreement. It annoys me to no end that they can look the way they look in the regular season, and I just know it's an inevitability. How we will be watching them on that second Sunday in February, whatever it is. - Wow. I just want you to watch your favorite TV show and see if that's on the lower third, someplace. 'Cause Kansas City care about the regular season. - Oh, it won't inevitably. That will happen. - Why should they? - Why honestly, why should they? - When you know what you can do when it matters the most, you're correct. - Do you think the Tom Brady Patriots gave a rip about September football when they were cooking? - No. - No. - No. - No. - No. - So there's... I don't give hot takes, Shay, but there is one right there. That'll be in the facility this morning. One of the show is on the best one. - They look like they don't even want to play football in September. Like it's just horrible watching them. - Right. - And then they'll take off. - All right, we have got deal breakers. - What's annoying is they're still 4-0. - That's the part that frustrates me, 'cause they look so bad. - Yeah, that's annoying. - And they're 4-0 anyway. - Yes. - Find a way to win. - It's great. - All right. - A roast. - We will have deal breakers next. We gonna gross right here in Chicago's home for sports.
