I do want to ease into this bear's conversation with you. - Okay. - So let's go back yesterday. We were talking a little bit about the most valuable bear. - Yes. - And so, you know. - Previously on Captain Jay Hunt. - We were discussing the most valuable bear. And the topic came up because it was part of five burning questions that we have every Wednesday at 735 where I'm asking five questions about the Chicago Bears. And so, I asked at the top of it, who is the most valuable bear? And Cap is kind of looking up in the sky, looking around and just like that, you know, 'cause because the ball club is two and two and there's been some good and there's been some questionable with this bear's team. Not bad, but there's been some questionable here. - There's been some bad. - Well, the offensive line. But I mean, but to the point where, I don't think it's going to break the Chicago Bears. I don't think it's going to break it totally. - Yeah. - It's struggling, that is for sure. So, I said that it's Jalen Johnson, that should be the most valuable bear. And Cap said, Jaquan Brisker. And that could be prisoner of the moment. Brisker had a tremendous game last time out. - Yeah, yeah. - It was tremendous. After his penalty, he had the on, he was tremendous. All of them in the interception, the sack. I mean, he led the team in tackles. He was fantastic. And so, I said Jalen Johnson, Cap said Jaquan Brisker. And on the pole at ESPN 1000 on Twitter, there was four choices. Andrew Billings, Montes Swett, Jaquan Brisker, Jalen Johnson. So, if I asked you who would be the most valuable bear through the first four games you'd say? - I don't know. I mean, I don't know. Of those four, I mean, if I'm taking for those four, I would say Andrew Billings, but that's-- - Oh, that's interesting. - That's who he's been so dominant and so essential. And he's not made a lot of mistakes, so we don't hear his name a lot. He's just made more impact, which is good. Of that group, I don't know. Like, they don't have one person, I don't think, who has been elite, like super elite. I don't think so. In moments, in moments, Kyla Gordon's been flying around the field. In moments, I feel like we've seen he's been everywhere. Tyrek Stevenson has his moments. Harry Taylor has been outrageous in his role when he's recovered from, didn't have a great game against the Colts, but what he was able to do against the Rams. I don't know, no one in particular, I don't, I agree with the, what we're going for here is that no one on offense has been. - Well, that says a lot, doesn't it? - It does. - Especially for a season when you have Shane Waldron, who turned, you know, Smith's career around. And so nobody on the pole and no one called in yesterday that said anyone on offense, but also what it's glaring is, is that no one mentioned Caleb Williams, except Sylvie. Sylvie did text me and said, I think it could be, it could be Caleb Williams. What does that say, Dion, for this team that's two and two, an impressive win against the Rams, in which if I asked you the most valuable bear, and just to qualify, just try to make it clear what MVP is, like if you took this player off the team, the team would have a problem. It's like most valuable player. - Right, right. - You take that player off the team, and the team would have problems being able to win, or score, or whatever the issue is. So what's your team? - At this point, I don't think that's Caleb. - Okay. - Maybe eventually it will be, but at this, based on the evidence presented, I don't think it's him. - So what you're saying to me is, is that if Caleb Williams was not starting, it was Tyson Beijing, the Bears would be two and two. - They could be, yes. And that's believable, yeah. - Do you think they would be? Because what we're saying is, is that with the two and two, and we know the story, the story is Caleb Williams is trying to get comfortable with the offense, overshooting receivers, as we've seen with Roma Dunezay on the sidelines, or DJ Moore on the sidelines, we've seen this. - Yes. - And last time we saw Tyson Beijing, in those four games that he played last year, he was throwing it from me to you. Lot of three and five yard passes, which you see a lot of in the NFL. Just keep the line moving. - Just efficient. Not, like he just, yes. - And then we had to open it up, then there was interceptions, if you remember, in that Charger game last year, the LA Charger game last year, the Sunday night game. - I think it was. - So I'm just saying, I'm asking like, if Tyson Beijing was the starter, you'd say that the Bears are still two and two. - Yeah. I mean, none of that is outrageous. I would never argue, there's no way. I mean, I wouldn't argue that. But I see what, when Sylvie says that, you know, Caleb could be the most valuable bear right now, I think that's also off the field. There's part of that, that leadership that comes from that, that isn't necessarily the box score, that has made him super valuable through these first few weeks. I mean, for him as a rookie, to be a part of that group, it was him and Mercedes Lewis and Colcomette, right, who sat down with Shane Waldron, for him as a rookie to do that and to be the guy that everyone's gravitating towards. I think that makes him super valuable. - I mean, beyond the box score. - But nobody, nobody on offense, huh? - No, not at this point. - You see our poll question where it's leader. It's nipping tuck, actually, pretty close. And you allowed the voters to choose, or did you give them names? - Well, you see it right there. We gave four choices that were mentioned on the show. - Right. - And of course you could always use other for the comments. But so far, 30% of people at ESPN 1000 say Jekwan Brisker is the most valuable bear. Followed by Jalen Johnson at 29, 28%, Andrew Billings 25 and Montesaulette 17%. - So what our listeners and viewers are saying is that if you take Jekwan Brisker off the team, okay, so now you're a little bit less than in the secondary. Not sure about that. I think they have so many players in the secondary that could be able to make do. If you, 'cause you still have Tyrek Stevenson, you still have ByYard, you still have Jalen Johnson and Kylo Gordon. - Yeah, yeah. - And some, and Jonathan Owens, very solid as a backup in Elijah Hicks. So I think your secondary is fine. - I just think that says a lot. When we can't determine the most valuable bear, it says a lot to where the bears are right now through four games. Still trying to find themselves. - Correct. - Correct. And Matty Riflu said yesterday that after four games, you're starting to kind of figure out who we are. And I asked Caleb, like do you have a better sense of what this offense is? He said we're starting to figure it out. They're just in the early stages of finding an identity. I don't know that they have one yet. I wouldn't point to one thing. - I think it's wild though, that as we try to figure out who the bears are outside of running the football, and again, trying to establish a rapport for the quarterback, for Caleb Williams, and Adunze, Caleb Williams, and more. You know, same thing with Caleb and Keaton Allen. I think it's wild that once again, we're back to the defense carries the day, and that there's nobody on the offensive side of the football that's valuable enough to be most valuable bear. - At four games then, at four games then. I would hope that that would change eventually. - But that's been the identity of the bears for several years. - Yes, several meaning 50. - Right, exactly, you're exactly right. - Yes, 50 plus years or more. - Yeah. - So what if I made the case of Cole Comette, Dion? - Cole Comette has not, they have not utilized him the way that I think that they should. - I think it's coming around, or you remember the controversy early, where Jill Everett was being utilized more. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - I got that from Shane Waldron's standpoint. He's worked with Jill Everett. - Yes. - So he trusts him. - He knows him. - Right, and I know that sounds strange because you've been in training camp, and you've been in meetings and all this stuff when Waldron took the job. So you've seen plenty of film from last year to know who are the key players last year. Cole Comette would be one of them, and he didn't get the football. Cole did not bellyache about it as much. He didn't mention it. - No, because he's a professional. - Yeah, but he was, I think that he understood the situation, and you saw how that turned around in the Colts game, where he was able to get more receptions. He got a key catch in Sunday's game against the Rams. So I think that says a lot about where the bears are, that the bears and other. And I think at some point, when we come back around the next four weeks, five weeks, that Caleb Williams would probably be in that conversation most valuable bear. - I think so too, as he's becoming, and he said it, he's becoming more comfortable in what's being asked of him, and moving through his reads quicker, I think he will be eventually. Four games in, I mean, they could be one in three, they could easily be one in three at this point, right? And that would be even more frustrating. So two and two through the first four games, everybody's trying to figure things out. I mean, that sounds middle of the road. I guess that's who they are, but I just don't, no one has stepped up to be a lead on this team. Like, no one has in moments, but not collectively. - So, Deanna, I have you down for Andrew Billings. - Yes. - Without Andrew Billings, what would the defense look like? - I don't think that up front it would look good at all. I really think he's that important. And they would say that too. - You know, Javon Dexter, senior would like to have a word. - Yeah, well, he's also very valuable. Agreed, I agree, I agree. But they work well together, that group does. And Sweat hasn't had the stats that you would expect because he's always been double team. So it's, oh gosh, that was really loud. I didn't hear anything, what happened? - Wow, that really startled me. - You were saying about Sweat? - Yeah. I got that. - You were saying? - Not anymore. - You had a thought about Montez Sweat, please go ahead. - I was just saying that that's why his stats haven't been as. - Correct. We haven't been saying his name as much. - Because it would, yeah, you'd lay it out for her. And here's the thing, the storyline coming in was, it's Montez Sweat and as Jey Moore says, it's Montez Sweat and the drips. Who else was gonna be able to get to the quarterback? - Yeah, right. - There you go. - Nice. - So who else is gonna, and so now we see Dexter making plays, Billings making plays, Demarcus Walker. Show the team, right? - He is. - Sure? - As far as I know. - Okay. - As far as I know, I usually check his name when I do roll call every day at breakfast, so I'm pretty sure he's still there. - So, Shay, let's over the phone lines, 'cause we got plenty on the bears here in our first hour, 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N, 3-3-2-3-7-7-6-XAR phone number. Does Caleb Williams have to be the most valuable bear in the next four weeks? Do you think that he has to be? Again, it's about scoring points, it's about being able to get better the quarterback position, it's about him not getting run over 'cause of a leaky offensive line. So, we're asking you, does Caleb Williams for you as a Bears fan have to be the most valuable bear over the next four weeks for the Chicago Bears? Let's talk about the 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-6-XAR telephone number, still to come a very strong opinion about Shane Waldron and the Bears' offense from a former bear. So, a former bear had a strong thought. Oh, that's actually, you know it? The brother of a former bear. The brother of a former bear, Chris Long, was on the Rich Eisen Show. And so, Chris was talking about Caleb Williams and Shane Waldron in the offense. See if he could poke holes in anything that he's saying right here, Chris Long, talking about Caleb Williams and the Bears offense. Listen. Oh, a lot. I mean, I don't know what their identity is, honestly. I mean, like, I'm not making an excuse to the kid because I don't think he's playing as well as Jayden Daniels, like, period. And if you'd asked me coming out who the best quarterback was in this class, I would've said Jayden Daniels. And I told you, if Chicago makes this trade, you have to be ready for a little bit of a disappointment early where it's like, you're not ready to win now. Like, you were ready to build towards winning now. Last year, if you had, you know, accepted some of the, you know, the assets you'd get out of that hall if you'd trade it out of the pick and like, maybe you could fortify your team. And like, as evidence, like Justin Fields in the second half of the day, Pittsburgh, whatever, say, hey, we don't have to wait to get down to use him. I do think there's a starting quarterback in there. And I think with Chicago's defense, that team was ready to win this year. But as long as you're willing to play the long game, and that might include sifting through some scheme issues and some of the, hey, we couldn't get the online patched up, even though people told me it was like the best situation in the history of football for a rookie QB and then a couple of them making excuses for the rookie. The rookie can do some special things. I see it, but, you know, in general, I haven't seen him move the pocket enough. I really like him throwing on the run. I don't mean to be like kind of surface level, but that's one thing that jumped out of me watching him the other day. And then, you know, there are throws he could hit before the half in the red zone, but I'm also watching him two weeks ago. And when you're, when your offensive coordinator is blocking a guy with a 94 number with a guy wearing an 11, like that's a problem down on the goal line. And then when you're going speed option off of that into that look, like, I just don't know if they know what the identity of that offense is yet. Now Swift had a good game the other day. So it's something you've built on. - So thoughts there from Chris Long on the Rich Eisen show. Everything he said there, can you poke holes in it? - I mean, none of it's wrong. I don't know that if they had kept Justin Fields, they'd be ready to win with that defense. I don't know that that was, I felt like that's what he was saying. And they're not ready to win now. I agree with that. - They're not? - No. - The Bears are not ready to win now? - No, and what he said about the, I mean, we all said that. We knew that they were gonna, I mean, I figured nine wins was a great improvement, right? - I'm a nine and eight in sneaking in the playoffs. That's, well, that's winning. - I guess that's winning. - Well, it was better than seven wins last year. - Yes, incremental progress. Someone once famously said, that's all we're trying to do is incremental progress. What he said about Shane Waldron, though, we don't know what their identity is. They, right, correct. That is factual, that is factual. I don't, I don't know what it is yet. They don't have one aspect. They feel like it's coming along. Well, what are they gonna be? What do you see? What do you, like, what do you, what do you think they're gonna be? Are they gonna be a past heavy offense? Is that gonna be where it all comes together? I mean, that- - I think that, I think that Shane Waldron has to understand balance. I think that. I don't think it's as far fetched as, would Bill Belichick told Pat McAfee saying that, well, it's gonna be November, December, January, and the ball's gonna be in the air 50 times. He doesn't think that that's good for the Chicago player. I don't think that's what it is. I think that Waldron is having a come to Jesus moment understanding that, hey, you're gonna have to be able to run the football a number of times to get the rookie quarterback and Caleb Williams comfortable and the offensive line comfortable. - Well, shouldn't he have met Jesus like in March or April when he got the job and he suddenly has all these weapons? Like, shouldn't he have had that moment then of, wow, look at this talent. And what you just said in our last segment, we were talking about how he knows Gerald Everett and whatever. He should know the Bears personnel. He should know what Cole Kamek should can do. Cole Kamek's not been in the league that long. It shouldn't take him long to go through what he's, the tapes of what he can do for this offense. Like he should have prepared that way to help run this offense. And I don't know that he did. If he did, he decided to take that information and say, yeah, that's nice. I'm still gonna do what I wanna do. - And that's the whole thing about the genius offensive coordinator. - Well, and hoodie, what did they do? They didn't want Luke Etsy, right? Because he couldn't adjust to his personnel. Well, then why did you hire a guy who's not adjusting to his personnel? Like, why did you do that? - It's a great point. It's a great point. The points that Chris Long made talking about is not ready to win now. I don't agree with, I believe that it is the team that's ready to win. It's a defense that's ready to win, and it's an offense that's coming along. And so it's not broken. I'd rather be the Bears than the Titans. I'd rather be the Bears than the Jags. - No, I agree with, oh, I'd rather be the Bears than the Jags, yes, correct. - Yeah. - I don't think it's broken, but I also don't think it's like, it's moments from hitting its stride. And what he said, I mean, yes, he came into the best situation for a rookie quarterback, but still a rookie. Still a rookie, right? So there are growing pains like that. - He says that he liked to see Caleb Williams of the offense move the pocket more. That's fair. - Yeah. - That's fair. But again, I'm not looking for him to be Patrick Bohomes of the first four games of the season. That's the whole thing. But when you're going to restart the quarterback clock by having a rookie quarterback in it, especially the number one pick, there's going to be some growing pains there. I said this. - Yes, oh my God. - I said this in the spring. So this is, I know that for this audience, they get tired of me saying it, but I mean, it's just iron. That's just the fact. It's not just Caleb Williams. It's anybody that's a rookie in that spot where it's not, you're not going to learn everything Dion sonically in game one. There's going to be times where he's going to have to learn. Moving the pocket, that's a Shane Waldron thing. And that's an offense thing that maybe he will grow into as the season progresses. - Yeah, yeah. He's going to have to. But here's the difference. I hear in Caleb Williams based on what we heard from the last couple of rookie quarterbacks the Bears have tried to make superstars is I hear him understanding the growing pains and not getting discouraged about it. Yesterday he even said not keeping my head down too long, moving on to the next thing, that's part of his growth and figuring it out. And I think that he is. I think he's evolving and maturing and understanding. And he keeps pointing back to the fact that it had been so long since he'd played competitive football and been hit that much. And I think that's, there's something to that too. I mean, you can feel like a world beater in shells. You know what I mean? You're not even having the pads on. And you're like, wow, we are going to be great. And then you start playing real opponents and it doesn't look the same. - It does not. - It does not. - Long also says that he doesn't feel like this team is built. I guess what you're saying is that people said that this is a perfect opportunity for Caleb Williams to go into this offense because of more Adunze and Kean Allen and Cole Komett. I think it still is. It just has to be able to manifest itself into wins. That's all there's like. Like again, look at all the rookie quarterbacks, Dion. And usually in this situation, I'm just being vague, but usually in this situation it's a rookie quarterback that has one weapon, one veteran wide receiver that's there. Or one tight end. But in this situation, a rookie quarterback comes in. He's got three wide receivers. He's got two tight ends. So, and he's got, I think a good enough running game for them to be able to flourish. This is with Roshan Johnson, this is with Khalil Herbert and DeAndre Swift, the veteran. So it is an opportunity for the Bears and for the offense to get going because I can't give you a quarterback coming out of the draft that has these many weapons for him to utilize. Not guys that are just middling on the scrap heap. These are players, these are dogs. - Yeah, yeah, they are. They just have to be used in the right way. And working on that chemistry and connection, I appreciated that the exchange he and DJ Moore had when they weren't on the same page on Sunday. And then they figured it out. I think that's a sign that they're willing to work through things and not get frustrated with each other, but move forward in the right direction together. It's safe. - Yeah, yeah. - Let's talk about that. - Just growing through the reps. I mean, we never had a clouded rep like that, and where the corner was trailing still. So, it was pretty different. So, it was, I said it was on me. Really wasn't known what it was thinking, but I was thinking one thing, like, going back out. And, I mean, we gotta fix now, so. - So, Caleb Williams, on why he missed DJ in the end zone before the half? - Safety was tucked in, and that corner made DJ go inside. They were in some sort of too high shell kind of thing. And, I don't know if that corner was played a bad, or if they were just in cover too, specifically. But, you know, reading it through the drop back. And when I was dropping back, I saw DJ go inside. Thought DJ was gonna keep it a little bit more. You know, vertical, he went back out. So, just not on the same page. Now, I wouldn't say it's somebody's fault. I think, just us not being the same page, we went over to sideline. Obviously, let everything calm down, 'cause I'm frustrated. He's frustrated, we both wanna, you know, make that moment, and go score right before half. Especially, 'cause that's just, that's big for many game. As y'all may know, I've been able to score before going into half, and so, you know, having that moment, let everything calm down, go talk to him after, you know, just getting the same page so that when it does happen again, that we hit for a big one. - Okay, so, DJ Moore talks about that same conversation on the sidelines. - We both was frustrated after that. Miss Touchdown, we both, well, he came over, and we both talked about it, got on the same page right then and there. I mean, shouldn't be no more mishaps on like a ball like that, going forward. - Okay. - Okay. - What do you think of that? - Well, there shouldn't be then, but that's the second week in a row that we've had to talk to DJ Moore about frustrations that he's had, and obviously, his facial expressions were worse in previous weeks, and that's what he was called on before, but interesting. Now, here's what I will say about DJ Moore, how many different quarterbacks has he worked with? - A lot, Carolina. - How many? - Carolina. - Right, a lot. So, has he been frustrated with his quarterback before? - Oh, the question. - A thousand percent, yes. Has he worked through it and put up incredible numbers? Also, yes, he got the second contract because he's able to do that sort of thing. This is all, I don't think there's any sort of issue here. I don't. - But, you know, on the surface, it makes it seem as if DJ Moore is demanding the football and the diva. I'm just telling you, like, because if we talk about this two weeks in a row, Dion, whether it's true or not, the perception will be DJ Moore, give me the damn football. I'm just telling you that that's, I mean, I don't feel that way. I've been trying to push this off the last couple of weeks. It's like the whole body language thing with DJ Moore. - Right, or right. - He's in a position at wide receiver where they all believe that they can catch the football and get into the end zone. They all believe they can do that out. Any down, any play, any situation. Hey, man, I was wide open. Even though you see all y'all 22, someone's not, they always feel that they're open. - Right. - So, I don't think that this is a disconnect between the two. I just think that this, again, the growing pains or a rookie quarterback that's overshooting as we seem time to time is receivers. - Yeah, that's been consistent. And how does he get better with that connection and that chemistry? I'm hoping that this is part of it. Like, conversations getting on the same page. - Do you think that as you sit there and watch DJ Moore, is he unhappy that he has answered these questions? I think he's chafing at the questions now. This is the second week in a row. Do you feel that way? - Maybe. I don't know. He's never been real, like, I don't know. He's never really given these really long answers like Caleb does, like big exploits. That's never been DJ Moore, never. - You mean like... - It's a whole shot. So, I was thinking he played outside. I had to go inside, wind back out, and then assess where the safety was. And he thought I was going, just running straight. And now we know we're gonna go to Caveaway and we're gonna get it right. - Okay, see, just shorten his size. - I just don't know. - The most he talked about was when he did catch that touchdown. - Yes. - When the linebacker was on him. - Yeah, well, here's the line. - What in the earth? Which, what, what, who did that? Seriously. Anyway, go ahead. - I'm just saying that I don't want this to be a theme. That's all I'm saying. - No, I don't either. I don't either. But I think that we've, what we've determined through four weeks is we don't yet have a theme for the Bears. - Just, but this... - I think the next four weeks. Well, the next quarter. - Yeah. - That's what we used to like to say. The next quarter of the season is going to determine a lot because these are winnable games. - So the letter grade for Caleb Williams in the offense so far through four games is a... C. - C plus. - C, C plus. - Solid C, yeah. - Yeah. - And so there's a lot more to work on. Whereas the defense is anywhere between an A minus and a B plus would probably be tough. But I mean, they've just been solid. It's going to be... It's on its way to be a top five defense. What our question? If they're there now, I think they can sustain themselves as a top five defense in the league. And then by the way, it's not like there's a whole bunch of named guys across the front line. It's Montez sweat. - But they've been 10 straight games they've held an opponent under 21 points. - So long, yeah. I think that's right. - That's outrageous. - Well, I mean, that's Ira Flus' defense. And that's why we circle back to the question about Ira Flus and his job security. - Right. - Because there's one side of the football that's really solid and has been for a while. - And did that with him when he took that over, when he moved into that role, is when they really started to come together. He's an elite defensive play caller. - Yes. What about the rest of it, Dion? - I don't know. I don't know if he can do, I don't know if he can do the rest of it. He can, but he can hold killer barbecues at his house and really bring everybody together. - Oh, good. Does that win games? Is that work on Sunday? - I don't know. They all like each other. - Love the brother next to you. - See? That's what it's all about. - What do we say here? If we all like each other and we're not winning, we're losers who like to hang out. - That's it. (laughing) - That's it. - Good. I'm glad you like each other. Now let's win some games. And it doesn't feel like this week, like if there were ever a game to have an offensive explosion and feel really good, you're at home against the Panthers. They're dead. - Yeah. - Most of their defenses hurt. Their best defensive players are not going to play in this game. Isn't this the spot that's like, and it's the team that basically traded Caleb Williams to the Bears. This is the spot. If you want to have an offensive explosion and show that we're going to be all right, do it against this team. - Yeah, it should. - Yeah. - Is this this team, the Jaguars team as well, going into the commanders game. - Yes. - I mean, it has to happen. These next two weeks, heading into the by week, they should be four and two. - Right. - That, based on what we saw last week, if they're able to actually build on that, if Shane Waldron tells us today that he unlocked something and they feel like they're going to move forward and they can build on what they did last week, that that's what it needs to look like. - Yeah. - Win these next two games. - Yeah. - No Andy Dalton revenge game. - Let's go like going. - We will find out, won't we? We're going to find out. - Well, yeah. I think it's going to be super telling because the fact that they don't have a division game until November 17th, this is where they need to bolster their record. - Mm-hmm. - Because Green Bay looks better than I thought they would. Minnesota obviously does. - Yes. - And we know what Detroit is. So they're still chasing in the North. They don't, they haven't taken the North, they're chasing in the North. - And they will be chasing until they get this offense right. 'Cause the defense is going to be solid and the offense is lagging behind. This is going to be a problem. But again, I'm not panicking as a Bears fan. I'm not over the top about it. I just, 'cause I saw this coming, Dion. I saw this coming where it's steady, but it's not solid yet. - Right. - And so, but everyone has to be on the same page and this is where Shane and I always agree. It's not about camaraderie. It's not about them going to dinner together. It's not about how they pat each other on the ass. It's not about them. - That's nice, that's nice, but that's... - When you get on this field of play, that's what it's all about. It's good that they get along, I don't care. - Right. - I'm just a Bears fan. I'm just watching like everybody else. Did they win or did they lose? I'm very bottom line, 'cause I don't have time. I don't have the sports bandwidth to wonder, do they get along at the stake dinner? (laughs) Do they share wine together? I don't care. - I don't either. - God, we got, we're so busy in our lives. - I know. - Do we care that they get along? Unless it's right in our face. It's like these two are fighting one another. We need to recover that. Although, I just care about them winning, and how it gets better. - Yeah. - I don't care about that. - Because, gosh, I mean, coming out of a win, the week in our city is exponentially better. I mean, it's just, we ride the roller coaster and it is, yeah, they need to just prove that they're getting better. I don't know, it still bugs me that they didn't win that game against the Colts. It still bothers me, 'cause it's like that, that was one of the wins I thought they'd have. - Sure. - Right? - They're ready for the moment. - No, and that's pretty big indictment that they weren't ready for that. - Circle that as the Shane Waldron game now. When you go back into your game logs, make sure you circle that. Like, oh, that's the game. - Well, it was those back-to-back weeks. It was Houston where he looked nervous. - Yeah. - And then, Indianapolis, where he didn't know, look like they knew what they were doing. - Mm-hmm. - Yeah, it's awesome. - Yeah, it's quite cheap. - Bad. - Bad. - Funny, that's bad. Like, I actually felt bad. I was like, oh, that is such a bad look. - Too bad you can't drink on the sidelines. - You're gonna use a few. - A few. - He's just a nervous type guy. Okay, that's fine, but just put your nervous energy into winning the game. - You have the job. Calm down. Now do the job. - Oh, shaky Shane Waldron. That's how we know him. Make sure you use that on the eye witness news. (laughing) On the road is Lewis on ESB. - It's a bit tonight. - It's time. - Lewis, good morning. - Yeah. - Hey, hey, guys. - It's Jonathan Adion. How are you, Lewis? - Oh, hey, I'm doing fantastic. I had to actually run away from myself. Oh, it's a big topic for three seconds. Oh, God, I love it. But I wasn't gonna miss out on this. Look, I don't think Caleb has to be the most valuable player. He's good. He doesn't have to be like top. He doesn't have to be the most valuable. I think that, honestly, it's gonna stop me, but I think that DeAndre Swift could potentially be the most valuable player on offense because he can be a safety outlet for Caleb on a checkdown. And if he's running the ball well, it's going to pull guys, it's gonna pull these runners forward. It's gonna work. It's gonna work. - Okay. - You agree? - I mean, eventually, Lewis. - Thank you, thank you, Lewis. - Thanks, Lewis. I agree with him. He doesn't have to be the most, he doesn't have to be, but I think someone on offense does. If they're gonna consistently win, someone on offense does. He doesn't have to be right now. I think eventually he has to be. He has to be, oh gosh, we've been asking this for this for years. - What's that? - He has to be the reason they win games. I want him to be the reason they win games eventually. - Yeah. If Justin Fields was the quarterback for the Bears with the Bears, we'd be two and two. - God. - Oh, God. - I don't want to do this anymore. - No, no, no, but you understand the question, Shay. The reason why I ask the question because-- - I totally understand the question. - Because I'm just trying to get Caleb Williams closer to MVB. - But don't you think Justin Fields needed a new place to reinvent himself and feel like he, I think he needed that. I think a lot of what we're seeing is the byproduct of him having to, being traded and then being traded and being the backup immediately, right? And not even being a starter anymore. I think there's a ton of motivation in that from a competitor. And I think that's some of what we're seeing. - Jay Moore, DJ Moore would be happy. (laughing) - I guess so. (laughing) - Oh, I guess so. I'm just trying to figure out how the rookie quarterback can be the most valuable bear. And I'm telling you that whoever's back there as a quarterback, I think we all know this, but it has to be set out loud, Dion. Whoever's back there as the quarterback will still have to go through the growing pains of Shane Waldron being the offensive coordinator, learning the process and a rookie offensive line. - Yeah. - And there's no, that's unavoidable. All I'm playing, and that's my bottom line, is that whoever's back there ties to Beijing we mentioned earlier, Caleb Williams, Justin, whoever, you still have to be able to navigate through that offensive line, the inability to run the football and just try to get on the same page with receivers. - Yes. - That's all I'm saying. - Yes, there's growing pains to whoever is back there. - Yeah, because of those examples you just gave, offensive line, new offensive coordinator, all that stuff. - That's why I'm not trying to bring Justin back into Chicago Bears uniform. I'm not doing that. I'm rooting for Justin because I want that draft pick. - I always root for Justin. - Yes. - Yeah, I have nothing against him. - I'm the same. - I'm glad that he's in a better situation, I think with the Steelers because of Mike Tomlin. - Yeah, great. - And I hope that he does well because it's not sticking it to the Bears, it's just keeping his career moving forward. - Forward, yeah. - That's all. - Yeah, correct. - Some thoughts from Matt, he reflues the head coach for the Bears and don't forget Shout On O's Shot coming up at eight o'clock on Captain J. Hood. - Hey, yeah. - You're listening to Captain J. Hood. Follow the show on Instagram @thecatman and @ijjhood. This is ESPN Chicago, Chicago's home for sports. - It's Bill Brecker's Thursday here on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago Lab, Dion Miller in for a cap. And Matt, he reflues, spoke to the media yesterday, you were there? - Yes. - Any good questions by you or? - I think I asked him a question. Someone else asked him about the trade, the Carolina trade for DJ Moore and how that set up the Bears to look the way they do now. - Yeah, it's really remarkable what do you think about it, how it all fell together like that. So it's getting, a lot of that's luck. I mean, a lot of that you can't predict, but it's also putting yourself in position. Ryan Pools and his staff did a great job with that. And, you know, there's a couple of players that we could have been going for at the time. And man, I'm sure glad we got DJ. So it worked out well. And again, we just got to keep working and getting better as a football team. - You didn't ask that question? - I didn't. - Okay. - I used part of that sound bite in my story. - Did you? Of course, of course you did. - Of course I did. - I think that you should start using more of your question. You have full question and answer right there on your own. - Thank you, M.A. It takes up way too much time. I don't, I mean, sometimes I'll use the question, but I just think it's too much time. We got to get, get to it. I only get like 75 seconds to tell the story. - So it's just, so, so it's just no ego at all. Absolutely none, zero. - Is that about me, the story's not about me. You know what cares what I say. - That's not, then you can leave. - No, it's about me when I'm here. - Oh, I see, only on the radio. - Only on the radio, I understand. - So our theme in our first hour is somewhat Caleb Williams. And trying to find a way for him to be the most valuable bear and how many players we can go through before we can get to Caleb Williams as the most valuable bear. And so, Iber Flus yesterday was talking about Caleb Williams just having more trust in Caleb, you were Flus said. - So that's an evolution thing, right? So you give him some, you know, when you first start out, you know, and he, like I said, he always leveled up every single time. And that's just where we are right now. So he just kept leveling up and it's the same thing with games. You know, when you put games together, first one was at home, you know, was okay, right? Second one in the noise, right? Then we improved in the noise the next week, got more production. You know, and then last week was just an evolution of that, getting more production out of the group, you know, dispersing the ball around, like we're supposed to, playing point guard like we talk about and playing clean football. And that's what, what last week was. We played good clean football from that position. So four and two, I see Deanna after the Panther game on Sunday and then the Jaguars in the UK. These are games that the Bears should be able to win, but I would agree with you that as you move forward through the schedule and when the Bears say it and when people that are experts at this say it, they see the improvement in Caleb Williams. And because of that, these are games in which he should be able to flourish. - Yeah. - I like the most passing through the Cole commit and just trying to get the running game started, all that. That was really good for the Rams in the Rams game. Now moving forward, these two games here going into the commander's game, you got to be able to win, but along with the winning, for the offense to be impressive, where it looks more like a well-doer machine. - It looks more like last week. I mean, you know, I thought that it just, it looked like they were executing well, that they were confident in the decisions that they were making. And the two games before those two losses, they did not look like they were sure of themselves at all. And I just felt like you saw a little bit more of that last week. I think now is a great opportunity to do that again against this Carolina team that you already said is kind of a disaster and they're trying to figure out what they are. We know what Jacksonville is. These are, this is an opportunity. And you need to see good teams take advantage of this. Good team, good talent takes advantage of this. - I'm looking at the line, Shay, that see the four, the Bears are four point favorite. - Yeah. - Okay. What is Vegas saying there by making them a four point favorite and not six, a touchdown favorite, especially at Soldier Field? What does that say? - Yeah. - Says you're a little bit better than Carolina on a neutral field, it's probably true. They've been better with Handy Dalton. If Bryce Young's still the starter, it's probably six or seven. - I think that some might be looking at it and say, okay, could Carolina win because they feel obviously strongly, more strong about Handy Dalton than they do? - Oh, well, I mean, experience makes a huge difference in these moments. Like what he's, Handy Dalton, well, I guess, I mean, Bryce just couldn't do what they needed him to do, not to mention he was sacked so many times. I mean, that gets in your head. He didn't trust that his line at all. - Yeah. - And that led to his benching, in my opinion. I mean, you just, you can't get, when that stuff gets in your head, you can't move forward from it. I think that was Justin's problem here. Like he couldn't get out of that, he couldn't get that mentality out of his brain as long as he was still in that same situation. He needed a fresh start. Maybe that's what Bryce Young needs too. - I don't know about U-Shay. It was about as strong as I've heard Albert Breyer talk about a player. He was on with us Tuesday. And each has pretty much said that Bryce Young ultimately just can't do it. - Yeah. - It wasn't like he's a young player, you know, he's got to learn. It's not one of these. He's got to learn behind the veteran. He says he just can't do it. That's pretty much what I got. I'm just, I don't know. - That's what it looks like. - I mean, that's what he said though, Albert Breyer said. - Yeah. What did I say when they benched him after two weeks in his second season, I'm like, for me, it feels like his career as a starter in this league is done. - Yeah. Albert said as much and he was pretty strong on it. It was, that's surprising. Cause he always want to give someone a second chance for a chance. We have a veteran in the league, but boy, that's, that's damning. - Would you have said that about Fields, Shay? - When he left, like maybe he wasn't going to start again? - Yeah, I think I did say it about Fields and it kind of felt that way. And then, I mean, Russell Wilson's a lunatic and he got hurt. - Right. - And the Steelers defense is good enough that look Fields wasn't like light in the world out fire for his couple wins. He was just serviceable with a great defense. - We got shot in no shot. That's in two minutes on Captain J. Hood for show.
