Mike Moore Media, the first place to hear Rockingham County News and information. Following up on a cyber tip and investigation, Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Department of Homeland Security have arrested Morgan Ryan Taylor, 39 of 329 Wild Fern Lane in Reedsville, on 10 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He's under a $50,000 secured bond. Eden Police, after consulting with the Rockingham County District Attorney's Office, have charged a Morehead High School student, 17, with possession of a firearm on educational property, possession of a firearm by a minor, and carrying a concealed weapon. Helene update, at least 190 deaths, more than half in North Carolina. Hundreds are still missing. 1,000 active duty soldiers have joined the North Carolina National Guard in search and rescue operations, in delivering supplies, food, and water to isolated communities. The guard has already performed more than 1,500 rescues and delivered more than 700,000 pounds of supplies. Duke Energy, at 8 this morning, reported approximately 92,000 outages in Buncombe County, 50,000 in Henderson County, 15,000 in Rutherford County. Spectrum, still unable to give a timetable on when service will be restored. Appalachian State University received significant water damage. Classes will resume no earlier than October 16, the exact date based on conditions and infrastructure. Transportation officials say Interstate 40 in western North Carolina may be closed at least a year. Interstate 26 in eastern Tennessee will be shut down in both directions, at least through the end of this month, possibly longer. In Stokes County, NC 89 has reopened. Crews have made repairs on a significant washout and install specialized retaining walls. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency estimates at its peak flood waters were 1.2 million gallons per second, surpassing Niagara Falls, which is about 700,000 gallons. Satellite TV rival Direct TV is acquiring dish, creating the largest paid TV provider in the United States. The deal is valued at $10 billion. Direct TV is getting dish in exchange for a nominal consideration of $1 and assuming all of its debts, approximately $9.75 billion. The transaction should be finalized in second quarter of 2025. Together, the companies will have about 20 million customers. More TV news, 75 jobs are being eliminated at Walt Disney companies, ABC News, and stations in major markets. Paramount is cutting 15% of its staff, saving the company $500 million. Recently, CNN cut 100 on-air jobs to focus more on digital, and layoffs continue at CBS News. Millions of Verizon wireless customers were without phone service on Monday as the wireless carrier suffered a major outage. Problems appeared to be centered mostly in the West and Midwest. Down Detector, a site that tracks service outages for telecommunications providers, said it had received more than 70,000 reports of problems. Lowe's and Home Depot have joined the effort to help victims of flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. The two big box retailers have pledged to combine $4 million in aid. They're also using their resources to get building supplies, tools and equipment to relief workers. Ford is going the extra mile to boost sales of electric vehicles. Customers who purchase select new Ford EV models will be eligible to receive home charging equipment and free installation to charge their vehicles at home.
