[MUSIC] Boom, the boys are back and we're coming into a bi-week. We're talking with the Hall of Fame voice of the Wildcats, White Thompson. You get to add another accolade. You called some games for a playoff baseball team. This will be publishing, hopefully, the Royals win the first two. Otherwise, they'll be publishing on Game 3 of the Wild Card Series. But that's another little accolade you get to put in the book. You called some play-by-play for a playoff baseball team this year. I'm so excited for him, Scott. Good to be on with you again. When I was with him in April in New York, it was such a fun time. You could tell then that things might be a little different with this group. As it's turned out, all of these months later, to have them be a playoff team and have Bobby go from just a really, really, really good major league player to a superstar. And Salvi have that kind of year and Lugo and Walker, I mean, it just goes on and on and on. Few of the guys did a really good job. I'm proud of them. I'm glad that they're reaping the benefits of a lot of hard work and it's really, really great for all Royals fans everywhere. It's been a while since they've been in and couldn't say enough great things about having that short working relationship with them. I loved every second of it. I'm looking forward to it. Luckily, you know, no meetings for me today recording this on the day of game one. So I'll definitely be watching it. You talked about someone turning into a superstar. We'll just segue right into what we saw last Saturday, the coming out party of Avery Johnson to have a performance that we've only seen a handful of times. I want to give credit to I believe is Derek Young of case online who published us on his website over 250 yards and five total touchdowns. I believe that is something that is rarely been done. I think Skylar Thompson only did it once. Will Howard maybe did it a couple times. And I think it's those individual 250 or the five touchdowns. Avery did it in one game. How exciting was it to see it from your point of view, especially after that bounce back of what happened in Provo. Well, I think that's probably the key to the thing. And I think what everybody should should notice here because Avery didn't play his best football game in Provo. And I think it really bothered him. And, you know, he, he talked about getting late, but right back in there on Sunday and studying film and trying to get better. And then coach said afterwards that they just had a really nice plan, a good week of preparation and practice, and then took that to the game field. And, and I was just so excited for them to bounce back like that. And Avery's such a big part of that, you know, he's, he's quickly becoming more comfortable. What I liked to was the fact that he just started the game. Different than others. And in part because of personnel stuff, you know, they were a little bit short and banged up at tight end. So they went with more receivers and a little bit more throw game early on. And I thought that that certainly worked and he was good and got into some rhythm. And that kind of led to, you know, the run game going to and that now you have both of them going and you look at what they did defensively to. It's just a pretty complete effort. It was a tight game for a while, but like always, K state makes adjustments and one day, once they took all a Gordon away in that first quarter for the most part of, you know, things were, things were a lot different. So Avery Johnson was named the big 12 offensive player of the week. I was listening to the post game radio shows I was driving back to Shawnee and, you know, usually stand picks an offensive player. He didn't. He said he said he's given it to both of them. You know, I would have pressed him. I would have made him choose one, but you're a lot nicer than I am why it. And how, how could, you know, how could anyone go against DJ I guess I guess it had to be someone had to be Avery but I mean what right on the cusp of 200 yards rushing had an extra 22 receiving. You know, how do we go from deuce Vaughn to DJ get in I mean what a transition that's been. Well, he's just developed into a star there's no other way to say it. You know, we probably should have had a little bit better. I think he flew of this during deuce his senior year when he in a backup role rush for over 500 yards and caught everything in sight. Right. And now you look at last year 1200 yards and all of the things that he did what was one of the leading receivers on the team. Very unassuming guy in so many ways and yet he just shows up and and and once the pads go on he kind of turns into a beast. He can do so many things. That's the way he can run luck. Well, first let me say I'd love this patience as a runner, you know, all of the good ones have a little bit of that I think he can run inside and out he can catch a love him on the wheel route. He's faster than you think he is. I'm thinking on that 66 yard run that, you know, they're going to get him at some point and they just couldn't. They didn't have a great pursuit angle and he just kept motoring down the field and. I just man I'm so happy for him and the players for bouncing back like that and putting in that kind of performance and you hope with the week off now you get a little bit healthier and back to back road games will be hard but boy they're in a good place right at the moment for sure. When you move on from DJ you talk about how patient it is it absolutely pains me to talk about this player because he is a cans and but went to a certain school school up north at Iowa State and Breece Hall. He used to be one of the most patient runners I ever saw in college football, at least in the big 12 where I focus most of my energy. You know, not the exact same runner, but that's the only person who I feel like had the same side, sort of patience waiting for that hole to deliver is there something in the water here in the great state of Kansas. That's producing these running backs or what's going on there, man. Well, I think I think it's safe to say that a couple of things are happening, you know, sometimes the the wave of talent goes up and down, but I think we are and have been for a while in an up cycle. And I think the coaching in this state has really become quite good at a lot of different places you're seeing so many programs now have some success. I really like that and you think about some of the kids that have been turned out in this state over the years it's impressive but even just in and say the last two to seven or eight years it's really quite impressive, honestly. And that's that's exciting for all fans of the sunflower state. Definitely you mentioned the tight ends earlier, how great of a job is Brian LePak done with that room you lose a second round draft pick. I would say, you know, if not arguably the best tight end in the program history and then Senate, then all of a sudden hey we're going to get, you know, touchdowns from four different guys in the first five games and already get six touchdowns from those guys. I've always loved Brian LePak but I think he's really showing his developmental chops seeing how that, you know, room has performed so far this year. There are so many guys on this staff that I enjoy watching coach, and he's certainly one of them, very much attention to detail guy. And I think he is getting a lot of mileage out of a lot of very young still young players. And that tells you that I think he's pretty darn good. I think we saw bits and pieces of Garrett Oakley last year, but you think about until he got dinged up a little bit, the progress, even in just the last few months that Braden Lofton has made it's been a really, really nice step forward. Then you see him playing short handed on Saturday without Lofton and you see what Will Ancyo does, and not a lot of people know that much about Andrew Metzger yet but they will, and they're more coming as you know. I really think that is a great area of strength. It fits really right now what K State football under coach climbing is all about he's always loved the 12 personnel grouping and they continue to flourish with that. I, I'm very impressed. I don't think we've seen anywhere near what we're going to see out of Garrett Oakley, and maybe Lofton and Ancyo to moving forward and that's really, really exciting but Brian is very bright. I couldn't be more impressed with the way he has handled that and handled himself as a coach at K State is young, but you know experience matters, but he's got a little more experience than than one might think he's going to be really good. No doubt about it. Also probably if there's such thing as being legally a genius he probably is that and he's choosing to coach college football that his story is amazing you know one of these days I'm going to bug Ryan Lackey enough to get, you know, Brian on the show so I can talk with him directly so you're listening. Next time I ask, you know, I know they're busy just let me have 15 minutes of Brian LaPac. When you need meal time inspiration, it's worth shopping Kroger for thousands of appetizing ingredients that inspire countless mouthwatering meals and no matter what tasty choice you make, you'll enjoy our everyday low prices plus extra ways to save like digital coupons worth over $600 each week and up to $1 off per gallon at the pump with points so you can get big flavors and big savings Kroger fresh for everyone. Fuel restrictions apply. At Sierra discover great deals on top brand workout gear like high quality bikes which might lead to another discovery. Oh, getting back in the saddle isn't always comfortable. Good news is Sierra has massage guns. And shape wipes too. Discover top brands at unexpectedly low prices. Sierra, let's get moving. I will, I will ask this before we move on talking about some of the road tests upcoming. I was, I shouldn't be but I was surprised by the atmosphere on Saturday. I was thinking, you know, I was up in Provo, Utah. I witnessed that, you know, I was pretty down on my flight back to Kansas City with a lot of K Staters that next morning. And I was thinking to myself, you know, I know it's a sellout. It probably will fill in, but maybe it won't have the juice. I was thinking it was going to buy what about 15 minutes before kickoff student section completely full right at kickoff. Stadium's entirely full K state nation proved once again that it is one of the best home field advantages in college football. I'm sure you weren't surprised. I'm sure you have a lot more faith in us K state fans than I did, but how was it seeing the fans respond and bring that sort of atmosphere for an 11 am game. You have to have it. And I think a lot of the national people are starting to notice that K state is selling out virtually every game. They're a fun product to watch. I think you can say where we've been at in terms of the time slots and the national TV times that it's a pretty good product and fun to watch. And I can't, I've said this a billion times. The K state people are amazing on so many different levels, but to show up with that kind of Jews threat at the start. Really helps a lot. I mean it just the place is so uniquely fun now. I love the, I mean, the over the years it's changed so much, but it's become a very comfortable place to watch games it's fan friendly. And then you just put, you know, those, those great people into the tailgating scenario and into that football environment. It's pretty awesome. There's no question about it. All right, we're going to ask why about some of the upcoming road games, but before dual give a quick shout out to Charlie Hussle. Not only are they a sponsor of my show here at Bosco's boys, but they are an official sponsor of K state athletics. They get pumped when I see them tossing the Charlie hustle shirts into the crowd Charlie hustle vintage made fresh. We had a giveaway back in September that actually sent one of the boneheads to the K state Oklahoma state game for free with two new t shirts beyond the lookout. Who knows what we're going to give away in October make sure you're following us and Charlie hustle on social media they just dropped some fun Halloween shirts. So if you're like me, I haven't dressed up for Halloween since elementary school. I'm going to have a couple Charlie hustle Halloween t shirts for a couple Halloween parties here later. So that way they don't, you know, accuse me of being a total party pooper. So that way I can look good and feel good with Charlie hustle. All right. We're going into another super late game at Colorado. Luckily, it won't be as long of a flight back afterwards. But how do you think the team is going to respond is there any DTS D or any nerves amongst, you know, the folks in veneers seeing that late kickoff time or is that reserved for us fans or chicken littling all over the place. Well, I don't know that they're a big fan of it but but as coach Kleinman said it is press conference on Monday. You better get used to it with the four corner schools coming in. I think there's going to be a lot of big 12 football and those time slots now because you just the pack 12 is no longer is as we used to know what you're not going to see us see in Oregon at nine o'clock on a Saturday night. I mean, it is, it is what it is. And so I think you take that and you live with it and it grows the league and that's that's a good thing. Little inconvenient maybe sure, especially if they turn around put us at 11 a.m. in Morgantown the following Saturday, which is highly likely. I'm not promising it, but it could, it could happen. But you have to deal with it. And I do think that the exposure that the league is getting is really pretty good with that slot. It is one that the TV likes. It's not necessarily be as fan friendly is, you know, the 230 or the 11 a.m. window at the bill but you just keep grinding and go. And again, the product I think sells itself and the numbers will tell you that. Have you began looking at anything from Colorado and when I look at him I see a lot of good wide receivers and it's going to be a test for the defensive back to at times we've seen second half first Oklahoma state and almost the entire game versus Arizona shut down future NFL guys. We've seen some communication breakdown so how do you think that you know van Malone Joe Clanderman's group are going to handle that massive test that they're going to see week from Saturday. It's a great question and I think it's one that probably I would start to answer it by saying it's probably nice to have, you know, a couple two or three extra days of work in that van. First and foremost, you have to just tip your cap should or Sanders is an incredible talent. His numbers are eye popping. He's been around a long time not much rattles him. You can get pressure on him a little bit which may be the saving grace there, you know, a year ago he was sacked a ton. Their offensive line is better. It's not leaps and bounds better but it's certainly better. The weaponry around him like you say is very accurate I mean hunter gets a ton of the headlines and he should he's one of the most elite players on both sides devolved and all the college football it's remarkable what he's doing. Playing, you know, 80 90 snaps a game or whatever it's just nuts. But, but it isn't just him shepherds good. Western's good. Jimmy Horns been around a long time and that's not even counting some of the young backs that they have the, but those white outs are good and experienced. And that helps should do a lot. I think you just have to be able to do a couple of different things one cover, but to get some, get some people into the face of him and make him as uncomfortable as you possibly can. And from there, the best way to defend should or Sanders is to have is to have the ball and possess the ball and run it right. I mean, 100%. And I think that's probably part of the game plan to. Brandon Mott's had an absolutely amazing season, you know, I think he's at least in contention for being an all big 12 type of guy rest of the defensive end started very hot, been a little quiet recently. So what do you think is a candidate to maybe outside of Brendan Mott get a couple hits on sugar and maybe cause a little havoc in the backfield. Well, I think for the most part you'd probably look at some of those I mean, stuff is not 100% healthy and it would be nice if stuff will be in was, you know, a couple weeks from now, a little bit better shape than he is but he's a tough guy and I think he'll, he'll give you some. But you really want to see more out of Toby Osensami and cheating and Ryan Davis those guys I think are, are making their way. And like you say it may not be quite where they want it just yet but I think they're doing, you know, an okay job for where they're at in the process. I think with, with the way K State plays defense, I think they're going to try to make Colorado, one dimensional even if the passing game hurt you some, which is kind of what it is with Oklahoma State. So neutralize that you saw what they did at UCF being able to run for nearly 130 yards. They're getting that much better. And they're starting to gain a little swag and some confidence in their own right. So there, with that late at night and their fans of buzz over prime and all of that stuff it's, it's going to be a hard game so you better have a good plan and I think they will you just got to do the best you can to pressure him and move him and make things hard because he's a unique and very gifted athlete. Who had so far has impressed you the most maybe surprised you the most. And who do you think is a breakout candidate for the final seven games of the season. Wow. I think on this team, there are so many. I mean, and it depends on, you know, a little bit on the question. So, let me throw out a name. Austin Romaine. This is a true sophomore who's playing great. Right. Would he be somebody you want me to mention or are we talking more of somebody who's playing a role for the first time. Here's the thing. Austin Romaine's playing at maybe a borderline all American level. And again, I, I, I already kind of threw my hands up and said, I undersold that kid from the jump last year. He's making me look like an absolute fool now because again what pro football focus had him as one of the best three linebackers through the first five weeks of the season. I think that 100% qualifies again. You might be seeing him pop up on all American lists here in December. Well, he's just, I really like everything about him. You know, coach climbing tells me all the time. I want to recruit guys that love football. I can assure you of one thing and be absolute about it. Austin Romaine loves football. And I think he's pretty good at it. I don't know that any of us saw him. This quickly doing what he's doing, but it is impressive and he's, he's pretty humble too. And the first thing that he tells me when I talk to him about that is how much he's learned from guys like Austin more and Desmond Purnell and, you know, guys like that. Bo Palmer. I mean, there are a lot of guys on this team that are making impacts that aren't monster big, but are hugely important. Just think back to last week's game. Like a Colby McAllister is an example that dude played his tail off. You know, Bo Palmer plays his tail off every week. And I think as K state continues to develop all of those young guys that that's, that's an exciting part of it for me because they are playing. I mean, everybody's playing more nowadays, I think, than they did even two or three years ago. But it's one thing to play him. It's another to have production out of that and they're getting quite a bit of production. All right, and we will end with the four packet questions brought to you by Manhattan Brewing Company the best brewery in the state of Kansas. They just dropped a barrel age pumpkin beer agent. Jade Reager rye whiskey barrels. I'm driving up Saturday morning. I'm going to get a couple pints right there from the brewery in Manhattan before I watch a lot of college football. Why the first question the four packet questions. How are you going to treat your bi week Saturday because I believe there's one later in the season but at that point basketball will be up and running. Are you treating your only true bi weekend of the year. That's a great point because that weekend we actually play a basketball game on Friday night I believe and so yeah this will be one that I'm really going to do my very best to be the worst couch potato ever on Saturday. And I've got games that I've already marked down that I want to try to watch. I don't get to do that that often and I really enjoy it when I do. So, yeah I'll be. I'll be 11 a.m. to probably 11 or 12 o'clock at night and how bizarre that is but you know what. There are a lot of people that do it weekend and week out. I'm ready to try that one. No, I'll be doing the same once I get home when I got home finished listening to post game drove all the way to Shawnee from about four to one a.m. because I watched that Arizona Utah game. I was all the way there. Question question to for you. What is your go to snack while you're watching football games at home on the couch whether it's after a Friday game because we had one of those are on this by week. What is why it's snacking on during those games. Oh, man, there's so many things that I could probably use as an answer here but one thing that I've kind of somewhat become addicted to. And Karen, my lovely bride doesn't make it any easier. She continues to buy it is basically those licorice sticks. I really like those. And the red vines is what we call them. And I'll grab a couple of those and munch on them and maybe do it a couple two or three times on a Saturday as I'm watching when I'm that's that's the plan anyway. I'm probably better for me than just a bag of potato chips or Fritos or whatever so I guess I guess there's ups and downs and everything. Definitely the third question is did you meet the Lord Mayor of Dublin during his trip to Manhattan. You know I didn't and I'm very saddened by that because I've heard so many people that had the opportunity to speak to him and that contingent of people. And I think they really had a ball being here Scott to be honest with you because they, they got to visit the Alumni Center and the foundation and of course our athletic facilities. I said to Jean Taylor our athletic director. Several weeks ago when they came here to announce that K state was going to be part of the Erlingus in 2025. And I love the way they were so excited about how K state was excited to go, you know, and now here they are back again and it's a wonderful group of people, whether it's the people that put it on from the US perspective or actually, you know, the people in Dublin and Ireland and all of that and I'm very proud of their country and they should be, they, they put on a really, really fun game this last year I'm sure you watched it in August just because of the K state interest a year from now. So many K status did. I know that they're, hey, think about this. I mean that was a really good game, but K state I was state. That could be magical in a lot of ways man with two really, really good football teams I can't wait for that. So I don't want to get ahead of myself but looking at the final regular season game farm again and again I'm not going to ask you to predict who might be in Arlington but there's a scenario where K state I would say could be playing back to back weeks with the way they're playing the way we hope we're going to be playing then all the sudden they turn around and play. That'd be three times in like a calendar, eight months. Yeah, would that be something. Yeah, so I, it's going to be nice. I'm already nervous for all, sure, all of the game. Yeah, it's something that I think after last night going in the last two weeks I think we've learned. Be patient, take these games one at a time I'll give you the perfect example would be Utah. Go and play exceptionally well and still water one of the most difficult places to play and when they're home the next week, and they lose Arizona. So enjoy the ride. And this is, you know, I don't want to be a preacher, even though it sounds like I'm trying to do that. But enjoy them all because it goes so fast. Right. I can't wait for the, I mean, nobody likes back to back road trips but you better embrace it because that's what we're doing. Well, it's hard to win in Boulder. It's hard to win in Morgantown. But what if K state does you think you're excited today? Wait till then. With K you coming to town. Yeah, for home coming. Oh man. Why? Get my heart beat and get my heart beat. Final question. And again, you're always so generous with your time. I'd imagine I'd be able to talk with you again either right before, right after basketball gets going, but practice has begun for the men and the women. I know you got to be looking forward to all the expectations, all the new names, everything with the basketball team, but I got to ask you, do you have all your pronunciations down all the different countries are good. Could you call a scrimmage tomorrow if you needed to? Definitely. Yeah, I've been over there some, not as much as I would like. Probably go a little bit later this week and of course they're really cranked up now. Yeah, I'm pretty good on the pronunciations now, if not pretty close to where I need to be. And I really am excited for coach and the staff because I think they feel like they've got a collection of really good young people, but really talented basketball players and I think fans will see that this is a lengthy, athletic, deep team with some combinations to it, whether it's the point guard position with Doug McDaniel or or David, I mean, Castillo, those kids are ballers now, and I think people are going to have fun watching this league. I tell people this, you think about the top five or six teams in this league with K state Iowa state, Kansas, Baylor, Arizona, I mean, it just, it just goes on and on. Houston maybe as good as anybody. Find me six more elite teams than that. You can't do it. You can't. No, it's going to be nuts. So I lied. I'm going to throw a bonus one in there. You mentioned David Castillo obviously the connection to the great Clint Stewart. Jacob Poland, when he was here for the Hall of Fame, he said, if there was anyone who was ever going to break my record, he called out David Castillo. We've heard some of the hype in the excitement around him. I don't want to put the cart before the horse. But again, it seems like this kid is already coach tank says he has professional habits already. How exciting are excited are you for this young true freshman, especially in a world where everything so dominated by transfers. Here we go. Got one connected to the program. I'm pumped up so much because of the ties with Clinton to K state. So he, he almost feel like he's already K state plus plus plus right. And that's such a great thing. You're going to love him because he just competes. He doesn't back away in any way shape or form. He's a very smooth player. I tell you, I saw him make a defensive play the other day when they were playing and they were playing fast. Just, just a flick of the wrist and knocks the ball away and steals it. And I'm going, wow, he's going to be a terrific talent on both ends. He can shoot the dog out of it. And I just think, you know, who am I to argue with the one and the great Jacob Poland, if he thinks he can do it. Let's, let's go do it. You know, I'm all for it because he can really shoot the basketball. I absolutely love it. Why, thank you so much for your time. If you want to say anything to the boneheads or any K state fans listening now, now's the time and then I'll let you get back on with your day. Well, I'll just say appreciate them all and their rabid support of the cats, man. I say this every day in my life. We're so fortunate right now with what's going on with with our facilities, our leadership with gene, the coaching that we have here. And how, how, how about that track and field hire, you know, after, after Cliff Rivelto steps away after just a brilliant career, you know, volleyball struggling a little bit, but Jason's going to get it going. I think we all understand that recruiting that arena. It's always a great time to be a wildcat, but, but I feel like even more so right now with so many cool things going. We didn't even mention many's team. Oh, and we should trust me trust me for coming, man. I every time I talked to you, I said, you know, if you, if you weren't, you know, so but you have way more responsibilities and almost anyone realizes. But we could go for three hours because again, Jeff many I know I think since you're officially a member of the athletic department, you can't mention anyone by name but some of the recruits he's bringing in. Again, we're getting five stars all these sports drum tank has to be looking in the mirror like all right now it's my turn. But it truly is a great time and I can't wait for women's basketball. I know Brian does a good job calling those games. I was texting him. I was like, all right, who, who'd they get who'd they get. So it's a great time and I can't wait for basketball season. But again, we still got seven regular season games and hopefully multiple post season games with football as well. So it truly is a great day to be a wildcat. No question. And I think the excitement is even more so when you put all of that together and also realize you got a 12 team playoff at the end of this rainbow for the first time ever. Why not be pumped. Right. I mean, you should be case it's got a real chance to be there. There's no lock, no guarantees in life. But man, I think there are a lot of people in this league that feel like they can be there.
