Six arrested over smuggled hairy crabs, frozen meat

Customs officers on Friday said they arrested six people in the past couple of months on suspicion of smuggling hairy crabs, frozen meat and eggs into the territory.

They uncovered three suspected cases in August in Sha Tau Kok, where goods were carried inside foam boxes. Three people were arrested.

Another three were arrested in September for allegedly bringing food through the Man Kam To Control Point in cross-boundary goods vehicles.

Officers said they seized a total 260 kg of frozen meat, 170 kg of hairy crabs and 600 eggs, with a total estimated value of about HK$200,000.

"We will continue to step up our enforcement actions to combat illegal importation of frozen meat," said senior investigator Chow Chun-hung.

"Regarding the hairy crabs, I believe that it's not yet the peak season for the consumption of these hairy crabs, so we will continue to monitor our intelligence and take necessary enforcement actions."
