- Checkmate 16, and he has suppression on target. - That's why I see him in my shirt. - Shot or no shot with Captain Jehood on ESPN 1000 and ESPN Chicago app. - That's why I see him in my shirt. - Good morning, and welcome in to the Captain Jehood Morning Show on ESPN 1000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood, with you. Courtney Cronin on the Bears in 835. - She's awesome. - The pics coming up next. - We got attacks from the J-Hawk as you have appropriately nicknamed him. That would be Danny Zetterman, our boss, and Danny Zetterman weighing in. He's listening to the show as he always does. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is huge for little league attorneys. We just had a caller from Pigeon Forge if you missed it. He said, "My son Avery's team is going next summer and we are staying in Dollywood." - That's correct. - How cool is that? - No, you said you visited. Did you ever stay there at Dollywood? - No. - No, what I told you was is that I saw a special on ET about Dollywood. I've never been in good importance. - Oh, you've never been? - No. - Absolutely. - Me? - Yeah, you go to do these games like at Jackson, Mississippi and Jacksonville, Alabama. I don't know. - That'd be a hell, but it might be the next spot for Missouri Valley. I could see that. - Yeah. - We saw things, the way things are going. - Pigeon Forge State. - That wouldn't surprise me. So these places I got to go this season. But nonetheless, no, it's something I saw and I thought, wow, that's interesting. Kind of out of the way in Tennessee and go see Dolly Parton. All of the great parts of Dolly Parton. Every bit of it. - Couple of great parts. - Yeah. - Two in particular. - Yeah. - Her hair and her eyes. We turn now to Shatter No Shot with Shane Orling, Shay. - Good morning on a Bears Friday. How are we feeling? - We're good, man. - Right, we're good. We're not drunk like you from last night from the whistle last night. You have more of these-- - The whistle and Oakland. - These more of these appearances you'll be doing. You're actually pressing the Fletch for the people apparently. - Yeah, it's been fun. So Oakland last night, the whistle. It was great Monday night next week. We will be at almost home in Wrigleyville with the Bud Light Football Toss Contest, an opportunity to join myself, Carmen and Yerko, on the Windy City takeover. Get yourself qualified to win a trip to San Francisco. See the Bears play the Niners, December 8th. A lot of fun. - Go ahead and say it, Cap. - I'm going to say it. - Say it. - What do you want to say, Cap? - Nothing. - Go ahead. - Say it. - Go ahead. - No shot. - I can see him biting your lip. Go ahead. Let it rip. - How'd you get on that trip? - See? Why would you just say I've got the the saying then you say it? - I'm not going to say it. I'm not good. How are you going? - See how that works? - Like how that would go down. - Here's Shay Norlick, Shay. - The wonderful partner that is Bud Light takes care of me. - See, we get like, oh, you get a day of training, Cam. - Where's that? - Lake Forest. - Okay. - Nope. Let him enjoy. - Hey. - Fine. Let him enjoy. It's going to be great. San Francisco, right? - Yep. - Taking a Don's game while you're there. See Bill Cartwright. - There you go. Here is Shay Norlick, Shay. - Can you coach there? - No, I called a game there. - You did? - Oh, yeah. UIC played San Francisco. I was there and I was good to you, everybody. Welcome to the whatever the convention center, the war memorial, I think it was. That's how old that building. Welcome to the war memorial. Oh, God, here in San Francisco. And Bill Cartwright, as I'm sitting there, he bumps my chair while I'm doing the broadcast. Just to say hello. That was his way of saying hello. Just bumps my chair. Just hey, what's up? - Hey, what are you doing? - It's like, Bill? Bumps my chair right at the middle of broadcast. San Francisco. - Absolutely. - All right, Shay, you have a good time there, buddy. - What would you say we'll say from what? Tenderloin. - Oh, so what the meat? - No, that's an area in San Francisco you don't want to visit. - Oh, Shay. I lived there for five years, so. - Shay, why don't you give us a report from Tenderloin? - Maybe I will. - So now that you said that, J-mooring. - How can you use English D? I'll be safe. - You know what? Now you said that J-moorin. Now he's going to go. He's going to go now. - I'm in Tenderloin. - I should take. - I'll bring, I'll bring Carmen with me. - No shot. - No shot. - That car. - Car is not true. - Absolutely not. - Old car, maybe. - Old car, this car, no shot. Here is the great Shayne Orling now, drunk from last night in Oakland. But still made it in today as he wets his whistle, with shot and no shot, okay? - For the Bears, blink. And this NFC North might pass you by. The NFC North currently has the best combined record in the NFL by some distance, with all four teams at or above 500 and the Vikings and Lions showing no signs of slowing down. So shot or no shot. The strength of this division makes Sunday against Carolina a must-win game for the Bears. - There's a dude in a Panthers hat walking by the studio right now. Right now, yes. - Get him! - It's important. (laughing) - That's not the second. - We've got a lot more. I learned some of the ABC7 studio. Sickle, sickle, boy. - And let's not attack, hold on a second cab. Let's not attack Panther fans. If you see the old man walking down, don't attack him, please. - He was an older gentleman. - He's an older gentleman. Look, that hat looked like the Lomera. - It did. - It looked like the teal hat. - Yes. - Leave that man alone. - So I would say, look, I said earlier in the show, must-win is when, like, you're the Brewers, and fortunately you didn't win. - All right, leave alone. - Yeah, take that, you. Well, no. (laughing) It's not must, but it's super freaking important. You need to find a way to get on that plane to London three and two. - Not a must-win, but it's a game that you just want to improve in, improving what you had last week, Cap. It's not a must-win. No, that's a no-shot, but you've got to be able to win. And Chase, we've been saying all week, you have to look better offensively, even how you look against the Rams. I still think you have to get some of the wide receivers involved into it. I do. And I just think that Williams and DJ Moore for whatever reason is a storyline in House Hall, do you, are you guys on the same page? You get along all this nonsense. Amen. I just want them to be able to just work and work at getting better. That's all. You have to be a viable, as you mentioned, contender in the north and have a good offense. Your defense is set, but your offense has to look adult-like. Shay. - All right, speaking of the offense, this week has been a lot about the connection between DJ Moore and Kayla Williams. Pretty much been the theme of the week. These two for whatever reason can't get on the same page. They did finally connect for a touchdown in the second half last week after a sideline conversation. So shot or no shot, DJ Moore will have his biggest game of the season so far with Kayla on Sunday against the Panthers. - That's a no shot. That's a no shot. - Why? - You might get a lot of targets, but I don't know if it's gonna be his biggest game since they've been together. - What's his biggest output this year? How many? - Four yards. - He caught a nine-yard touchdown last week. - Yep. - He catches for 78 yards against the Colts, but no touchdown. That was his most productive yardage day. It was last week three for 22 with a touchdown. - Yeah, this will be his most productive game. He will have at least 80 yards in receiving Anatutty. - Let's go. - Gets double team, Roma Dunesley has a big day. - Okay, he's on my fantasy team. I'm good with that. - Yeah, I mean, I'm saying is there's no rush. You don't have to be able to force feed DJ more time and time again because, again, when you start focusing and locking out a one receiver, you could get picked, especially when you're a rookie quarterback. It doesn't have to be that for me. I'll say it's a shot, but it doesn't have to, he doesn't have to just hone in on DJ Moore just because of their conversation on the sidelines about how they could be on the same page. It's more than DJ Moore. That's my whole point of this cap. The offense is more than DJ Moore. - No doubt, but with Keenan Allen now, they're not even on the entry report anymore. - Good. - And Cole and Roma Dunesley. - Yeah. - Let's go. - I think he has his best day of his season so far. - I would agree, but I think he could spread the wealth. If you think that we know about the storyline of DJ Moore and Caleb Williams, need the Panthers now? Of course they know. - They know. - So it might be an emphasis on DJ Moore, and that opens up for other people. Who knows? - Let's get it done. Shay? - Yeah, I would actually prefer they don't force feed DJ Moore because I think that's when you run into problems as an offense. - I'm not saying force feed, but he's good enough and there's enough weaponry around to attract attention that he'll make place. - He'll open it up for others though, Cap. That's what I see. You don't want a Josh Allen step-on-dig scenario. That's all I'm saying. And I'm saying that's who DJ Moore is from a personality standpoint, but you don't want that from a production standpoint. Like, how come I'm not getting the ball? I'm the guy. I come, I'm not getting the ball. I'm the guy with the fresh contract. It's more than DJ Moore, man. And Paul's made it that way to make sure I wasn't just one guy. He's gone through enough with the Chicago Bears by being the guy not getting the ball under Justin Fields. That's why you got these other guys. I wanted to be able to run the football and others be able to eat. Not just one guy, Cap. It's not a one-dimensional offense anymore. Shayne Orley. Last night, the Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers behind a three-run home run in the top of the ninth off the bat of one Pete Alonzo. Alonzo, we know, is appending free agent this offseason, and has been rumored as a player the Cubs like in the past. So shot or no shot, the Cubs should sign Pete Alonzo this offseason. Williams sets. Here's the pitch. Swing and a fly ball to right field. Pretty well hit. Freel it back at the wall. He jumps and it's gone. He did it. He did it. Pete Alonzo with the most memorable home run of his career. Pump's as fast as he rounds second. It's a three-run homer. He's given the Mets a three to two lead. They all pour out of the dugout. Alonzo on his way to home plate. They're waiting for him. He hits the plate. His first congratulated by Nimmo. Hug by Lindor. There it goes and it's waiting for him outside the dugout. Pete Alonzo keeps this fairytale season going with the fairytale swing of his career. Three to two New York. Shot. So good. Shot. Shot. Jed could so play that stuff all he wants in his press conference. Well, Perulance got to come internal. Guess what? You're going to spend money because you see your mortality as a team president. It's no doubt. Like if you're Tom Ricketts, Jed's a good dude. He's a smart guy. But guess what? If they don't make the playoffs next year, there's change in coming. It ain't Jed's money. They're going to be in there. Now if he gets some godfather offer from Steve Cohen, you pivot and move to the next guy. But they're absolutely going to be involved. Okay. Shay, should I tell him or should you tell him? I just, I think it's so funny that Cap thinks the seven war from Matt Chapman was not worth it, but the two and a half from Alonzo. Go get him brother. Yeah, because your guy was all about defense. His offensive numbers were pedestrian. They're okay. His off is defense. No question. Very, very good. I can't wait till you sign Alonzo and he boosts a ball at first base and you come in next morning with your head in the roof of this building. Because like Billy Bean said, money ball. The defense at first does not matter. That's what he said to Art Howe right there. It goes, he doesn't know how to play for it. It does not matter. He gets on base and he can drive in runs. Period. Take that. How many championships are Billy Bean? So here's the thing. Your teeny runs pretty good. Who about the soccer team? That's my, that's my point. Twins just won again in the division series. It's so ridiculous. Be a quoting Billy Bean because he's the smartest guy in baseball. He got a bird ball. It's just unbelievable. Hot movie makes him a genius. He's not, Cap. He's not. He wouldn't even be in your top five of great, top, you know, general managers or front office guys. He might have a philosophy, but it wasn't winning. And by the way, and by the way, if you ran the front office of the Cubs, you'd be hitting the roof every year. They don't have any money. They spend nothing. They got a pathetic ballpark and that dude makes them respectable. Come on. The A's? You tried running that thing on a shoestring. I wouldn't. Horrible. Well, I'd be at least I could be as good as Tampa. I could do that. They're not even as good as Tampa had been over the years. Under Madden and cash. No shot, Cap. Peter Lanzo. That's the topic. You sure that's what you want? Almost on the wrong side of 30 now. Almost. I'm just saying. I'm trying to win next year. I've had enough of this nonsense. Cap. That guy has been lousy, lousy in the second half. Unclutch. You sure you want that? You had one big moment. The Mets in that whole rally for the Mets in the second half. A lot of it is not on Alonzo. It's about pitching and also that Buick they had on the mound yesterday. Yeah, the Buick. Keep the hung in there. He did. Buick hung in there. I'm not a Buick fan. Yeah. Okay. That's Quintana. But Pete Alonzo. Let's see here. Pete Alonzo had an OPS plus of 123. He's 134 for his career. He hit, what, 34 bombs. And that's a down year for him. You know that that's an owner that's going to overspend in New York. And I told you, if he does, give him a godfather offer, we'll pivot. What was this OPS plus? 123. Oh, pedestrian Matt Chapman was 125. That's interesting. Yeah. Again, Matt Chapman is more of a defensive player than his offensive. Yeah, high OPS plus. One year. Look at our careers. My guys hit 46, 48. My guys are freaking right. Did you call Matt Chapman pedestrian? He's got the same number as Pete. What's that make Pete? He's a pedestrian player, Matt Chapman. He had a nice year. He did. I'm not going to tell you he didn't. You're not a. You're hung up. You're basically like dating Matt Chapman. Matt Chapman is an average player. You're not a Pia Alonso away from getting to the playoffs, by the way. I need a full player. I need a full player. I need a full player who would eat average. Yeah, not good enough. He's a heaven win player average guy. That's one year. But that would be you to ride in and be first take guy and sign him now. They gave him a six year deal. That was utter idiocy. He's been a seven win player three times in his career. That guy is not a seven win guy going forward. He's not. He's okay. Who wants Pete? He should have win here right now. I'll take his 40 home runs at Wrigley next year, and I'll beat your ass. I don't think so. Cap, I don't think so. I think you could do better than that. You don't want to give him the haul, and then for him to be an underachiever as he was. Big moment last night, there's no question. But where has he been all season? Do not just be just stargazing at the numbers and think what he could be at the cub. You don't want that to go badly on you. The big moment with the Mets. You sure he could do that with the Cubs? You sure? Not so sure. Like Matt Chapman has been 100, 116, 107 prior to this year. Where he had a better year. And the pass. Well, um, we'll have it in. Thank you, Yuke. We have around the NFL with the pics. That's next on Cap and Jhood. You're listening to Cap and Jhood. Follow the show on Instagram at the Catman and at IGJhood. This is ESPN Chicago, Chicago's home for sports. And now it's time for the pics. Here on the Cap and Jhood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. College and Pro. Here's Shay Norlin, Shay. Yeah, we get started with college football. I'll give you the standings quickly. Cap in first. Jaymore in second. Hoodie, you and I are pulling up the rear. We start today, Missouri at Texas A&M. Texas A&M, a two and a half point favorite against top 10 ranked Missouri at Kyle Field in college station. Hoodie, you take it off. Yeah, Texas A&M won four straight games since the season opening loss against Notre Dame, including a 21-17 win against Arkansas. Missouri is going on the roll for the first time this season after just getting past Vanderbilt. I love Texas A&M minus two and a half against the Jack McGrath's. Yeah, the AI version of Jack tells me that this Missouri team with coach Eli Drinkowitz. Is it Drinkowitz? Or Drinkowitz? Drinkowitz, yeah. Drinkowitz? He's in a good place right now. He did some data. He had the battery power charged up. And he tells me to take the Missouri Tigers. Getting the two and a half. Shay? Line just looks wacky and mizzou so far looks fake. I was willing to write off the Boston College as a weird spot. What you can't do is go to overtime and should have lost to wait for it Vanderbilt at home the following week. I'll take A&M. I'm rolling with Hoodie and Shay. I'm rolling with Texas A&M. Next. 10 Win Deanna, the fight and Kurt Signettys, go to the lakefront. They're 13 and a half point road favorites at Northwestern. Hoodie. Wish my Saturday was open. I'd like to see that game cap. Just want to see the lakefront. The new kind of make it up stadium there for Northwestern. I like Northwestern and keep it close. They will not win the ball game against Indiana. I like it a little closer than the experts think. Give me Northwestern plus 13 and a half. Yeah, when you roll into that pop up stadium along the lake. Beautiful. It's gorgeous. But it is a different experience. So while Indiana may win the football game, we'll see. I've taken the 13 and a half. Give me the Northwestern Wildcats. Gave that a lose by 12. Go ahead. Courtney Cronin joins us in about 10 minutes. She's an IU alum. Go Hoosiers. 10 Win Deanna goes up, blows out Northwestern. Indiana, it'd be close though. All right. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Indiana be close. So who are you taking, Jay Moore? I'm taking Indiana. So you're laying the 13 and a half? Yeah, but I think it would be close. I think it would be a close game. I'm not going to take the points though. He's the first half, second half guy. Wow. That's the late touchdown to cover the spread. He's looking for the back. The door cover late. But you know, Kurt Signetty wants to make money for his alumni. He respects gamblers. He'll blow it open. All right. Michigan at Washington national title rematch. And the Huskies against number 10 Michigan are laying two and a half. Hoodie Michigan has won each of its last 27 games against conference opponents. Nine of Washington's last 10 games have gone under the points line. So I'll probably look under for this game. But I will, I'll take Michigan plus the two and a half on the road. I think Michigan's going to win the game outright. I do. I think they're going to try and run the football. Washington's still searching a little bit for their identity. They lost a ton of Pennics and Roma Dunes A and others from last year's national runner up. Give me the Michigan Wolverine. I'm taking Washington, having Michigan without a pass offense to speak of having to go east coast to west coast for a night game in one of the most hostile environments in the country against a defense that has passed tests against rushing offenses. Not a great spot. Plus Michigan is unbelievably banged up after the Minnesota game. And the line looks just bizarre. I'm going to go Huskies. I'm going Michigan plus two and a half. These guys did it. These guys did it. I hate them, man. Onto the NFL. Jets and Vikings kick it off Sunday morning in London. Vikings two and a half point favorite. So I think the Vikings continue to roll. I just think that what's happening with the offense. It's not broken in the in New York, but I think that there's a disconnect there with Wilson, the offensive line, and Aaron Rodgers. I believe the Vikings will continue. Give me the Vikings minus two and a half in London. Yeah, I look at this game and I think the Vikings are good. You're obviously off to a solid start. This is a big game for the Jets. I think they get back on track and run the football into the teeth of a blitzing defensive corner who I like a lot in Bryan Flores. Give me my guy Aaron and the Jets. Okay, last week was weird for the Jets. Breeze Hall was terrible. They couldn't find anything in the ground game against Denver. I think that will change against the Vikings. And if you asked me what quarterback I want against a Bryan Flores blitz, it's Aaron Rodgers pre-snapped getting the ball out faster than anybody. I'll take the New York football Jets. We'll go with the Vikings. They will go five and all. All right, my friend. Ravens lay in two and a half points on the road and Cincinnati hoodie. All right, we'll pass. Go ahead. Oh, nope. Not allowed. This is a tight one here, man. It's a tight one. What does Carm tell you? Inner division, dogs, love, mustard, and onions. Some nonsense. Take the points on the intra division game. Okay. I don't even know if that's a real fact. It's just something he says. And he says when he says when the home team is getting the point, he says that what profundity doesn't mean it's true. Give me the Ravens minus two and a half against the Bengals. Yeah, I'm going anti-Carma. This one and I usually follow the Carms advice. You do? Give me the Ravens. I am not going that tight. Go check that out. Back after that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he gets that from someplace else. Divisional home dogs, right? They're good, right? Boys, can you look that up for me, please? Please go back after this. I believe Carmen de Falco when he says take the divisional home dog. And I will. Joe Burrow quietly playing incredible football since the loss to New England. The defense just has to get right. Bengals need this worse than the Ravens. I'll take since he. But then the Ravens won't be the best team in the NFL. Go ahead. Right. Thought you had a loss with the Ravens, shape? I was down on them this year. I have them under 11 wins. According to you last year, it was the best team in the history of the sport. That's correct. I'll take the Ravens and the points. Are you sure, Jay Moore? This one is a question mark. It's interesting. They did a number on the Bills last week, so I like how they look. So you'll lay the two and a half with the Ravens. Absolutely. We'll love it. Speaking of the Bills, they are a straight pick on for our purposes on the road in Houston, hoodie. Give me the Bills. I picked the Bills over the Texans. I'd like to, by the way, off to the side. I'd like for you to tell me how the public money is gone. And whether or not there's going to be a favorite at some point between now and Sunday. It's a pick up now, but I'd like to know by the time we get to Sunday, I feel like the Bills one and a half. I think that could be something. I think that could be the number, right? What's the cap line cap? Pretty much a split ticket, as far as the bets going to be. I think it's going to be like... I'm Buffalo, hoodie. I would think it's going to be Buffalo minus one by Sunday. But you say split ticket, right? Split ticket on the bets, but Buffalo's getting most of the money. Mm-hmm. All right. Kaplan? The Bills are going to win this game by probably a touchdown, or so, maybe six. Give me the Buffalo Bills. All in agreement so far, I will take Buffalo as well. Same here, Bills. Packers laying two and a half on the road at SoFi, taking on the Rams, hoodie. Packers have an NFL leading 12 takeaways. They've intercepted eight passes to Minnesota, that passes Minnesota for the league league. Packers have won four straight over the Rams. And I feel like that's going to continue. Give me the Packers minus two and a half against the Rams in Los Angeles. Matthew Stafford versus Jordan Love, and while Love is a little bit banged up on the knee, the long trip makes it a little stiff. Mm-hmm. Thank you very much, Jay Moore. Give me the Ram at home. Cap them with you. Matthew Stafford's been awesome this year, even without his top receivers. They've just gotten bogged down in the red zone. Packer defense, takeaways are great, but the rest of it hasn't impressed me. I'll take the Rams. I think the Packers will win the game, but I don't bet the pack, so I'm going with the Rams. We love it. Next. Cowboys, dude more in there. He is stealth, man. That guy just stealth, and he's good. Cowboys, that's Steelers. Steelers laying two and a half, Woody. Steelers are dedicated to running the football, even though they haven't been proficient at it very, it has been efficient at it very much lately. No, Pittsburgh's 138 rushing attempts are tied for the tops of the NFL, yet the Steelers are averaging is 3.7 yards a carry. So they can't run the football. They can't pass the football, giving the Cowboys plus two and a half in Pittsburgh. Yeah, I will roll with Big D. I think Dak has a good game. Thank you, Jaymore. The Dallas Cowboys roll into the steel city. Put a beating on the Steelers. I will roll with the Cowboys. What's going on in there? Give you Steelers. Steelers at home, that defense. Cowboys offense looks awful down to down. Success rate's not good. I think Steelers win. Is that Dak, Eddie? He's going to Cowboys, man. Well, I'm on an island on a lot of these games today. Saints at Chiefs, Chiefs lay in five and a half, Woody. I'll never bet against the Chiefs again. Give me the Chiefs minus five and a half. I follow Woody on this. Give me the Chiefs. I'm taking the Saints. Patrick Mahomes, north of a field goal. Oh, stop! Prime time, this is a Harrison Butker wins at late spot. Give me the Saints to cover the five and a half. What the hell? I'm taking the Chiefs. What is going on? Kyle, he's the best in the freaking NFL. No, Fade him, Fade him, Fade him. And then he holds up another Lombardi. Ah, how about that? Well, that's fine. Well, that's fine, Kyle, for you. That's fine. I will never bet against him when he's getting points ever again. But he does not do well, north of a field goal historically against the number. Whatever. In prime time, that's a Butker field goal spot. We've seen it like four times this year already. This is Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football? Monday Night. Okay. Do we have two Monday Night games again? No, thank God. Oh, that's fine. I love two Monday Night Football. Final game of the slate. Panthers at Bears, Bears lay in three and a half. Jaymore, you like the Chiefs? Yeah, yeah, Chiefs, I got them. My bad, Jaymore. Stealth. Like, caps up. The Bears minus three and a half against the Panthers. The Bears should roll. Yeah, this one, I believe the Bears will roll. I did not make it a top player or best bet in the Sun Times column. Sylvie and I do with Mark Potash. I do think they win. But would you, would I be shocked if Cairo Santos bangs through a field goal? That wouldn't shock me. But I do think the Bears cover the number close. Like, I'm not like all in on it, but I'm going to pick the Bears. I'm leaning with the Bears as well. Panthers top defensive players will not play. They're really injured. Uh, I like the Bears to just blow them off the field on Sunday afternoon, actually. Oh, you're right. Bears. All day. All right. And those are the picks. There's a pause in it. Watch this. Watch the, watch the radio pal. The picks. That's how you do it. It's a pregnant pause. Those are the picks. There you go. Good job, Howard. There you go. All right, coming up. We. Hey, that's Howard. That's Howard and his media guru. Oh, so now we turn to a Courtney Cronet with the latest on the Chicago Bears. Are they ready to take on the Carolina Panthers? Captain Jay Hood week day morning, seven attempts. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. Your beak out of it. Click on me, Cronet. National Chicago Bears reporter for ESPN. You have to temper expectations. If you are a Bears fan, just given everything that this team had to kind of undo. Breaking down the Bears and the latest NFL storyline. Fools was given the flexibility and the freedom to take this thing down to the ground floor, down to the studs to be able to build it back up. Courtney Cronet with Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 Chicago's home for sports. Courtney Cronet covers the Chicago Bears for ESPN and ESPN.com and she is on the hotline. That would be the car X tire and auto hotline. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boo, boo, boo, boo. If you beak out of it, don't worry, call the car X tire. Good morning, Courtney, how are you? I'm great, guys. How are you doing? We are doing awesome, Courtney. So through four weeks, two and two record, do the Chicago Bears have an offensive identity? And if you say they do, was that identity adopted last week when they decided, all right, we're done with the speed option stuff and the stretch plays. We're going to smash you in the mouth. Well, to me, that was simplifying it, right? Like doing the no brainer stuff in situations that call for it. So at the goal line, using your jumble package and lining up the full back is the lead blocker. So it made for a very easy run for Roshan Johnson. I don't know. I mean, that should be their identity. If we can start to see more of that and start to see DeAndre Swift in the situations that make sense for him, you'll find your identity in your run game. And that's what they paid him for. That's what they at least were setting up the belief of what their run game identity was going to be when they made all the changes in the off season. But I still think they're trying to search for their identity in the past game because it's not complete yet. And that's not to say that, you know, we're faulting Caleb Williams for taking checkdowns and that that's, you know, not something that's sustainable. I think he should take those moments where the layups are there. And what were people saying all last year, last two years for Justin Field? Take the layups, stop big play hunting. Think Caleb Williams is trying to find that same sort of rhythm. But until you start to see him hit on some of those deeper shots, I don't think it's a complete identity yet because even even as good as we know DJ Moore is in him scoring a touchdown last week and then, you know, them, they should have had two touchdowns as we know. Like, but they still need to put him into the game plan more than they are. I think it's going to feature him more than they are and target him more. That's why I say it's not there quite yet. But last week was a good indication that they've got the train back on the tracks and now they can start to speed up a little bit. You know, it's a great point, Courtney. As much as I think it's cool that DeAndre Swift had all those all-purpose yards receiving and rushing, I just think that the development of a young quarterback has to be able to connect to his tight end and co-commit and DJ Moore and Kean Allen and others. So I would imagine in the next couple of games against two bad teams in Jacksonville and Carolina that Keanle could be even more confident. Do you see that too that it can't just be all DeAndre Swift but others for him to progress as a quarterback? Yeah. And these are great opportunities. These are, they feel must win because of what the schedule, like how the schedule lays out and how these teams look. So right now, I was just looking at Carolina's injury report from yesterday. And yeah, I know a lot of it is rest day for veterans, but there's 19 guys on the injury report, seven of whom who are DNP. This is a banged up team. This is a team that's gone through a very weird, very early transition at quarterback in a team that defensively is giving up a lot of yards in the passing game every week. That's a prime advantage to get to three and two. And then as we know, Jackson builds a winless team right now, you have to stack these. If you have hopes of being a playoff team this year in a really good division that has surprised a lot of people, then you got to win these games early on and do it against opponents that you have the edge on in a lot of different ways in a lot of different areas. I mean, they will have faced by time, week five over, they will have faced three of the bottom four run defenses in the NFL. It's a advantage of the one last week against the Rams. They didn't against Indianapolis. The Panthers are averaging and they're giving up 149 rushing yards a game. Like that's another way to not overcomplicate it, to take advantage of your opponent's weakness and get to three and two, to get above 500 and just stack these wins where you can, because coming out of that bye week, they go to Washington. Washington's really good right now. And then Arizona, and then, excuse me, then the Patriots come to town, and then Arizona, it gets progressively harder once we get to the end of October. So to get these wins now, and I feel like they're very capable of doing that against Carolina, should be the mindset for what this team wants to achieve long term this season. Okay, so I've told you this before, I have great respect for how you do your job. You watch film, you talk to people like you're super informed on anything that you are covering. And when I watch, and I love Chris Canty as a guy, great dude. But when I hear him Fields, Stroud, Jayden Daniels, Caleb's not in their stratosphere. Okay. And then I hear Shannon Sharp, Washington drafted a star and Chicago drafted a diva. Tell you don't watch bears football without telling me you don't watch bears football. So why is Caleb getting this hate nationally when I see a guy ascending and thought last week was his best game as a pro? Because the same people who are saying those things are the ones who are regurgitating talking points because they could read an NFL.com draft profile that was touted in this guy as a generational talent. And we use that word, we overuse that word to project success for guys who have never played a down of NFL football. And not to say that Caleb didn't help his case by doubling down on those expectations, but because he wasn't shying away from it, I think that really set the bars at such an unreasonably high level that if he wasn't a superstar from the very jump, that it was going to look like something was wrong, something was wrong with him specifically. Now there is reason to be very impressed by what Washington is doing with Jayden Daniels. First and foremost, Jayden Daniels played a lot of college football between two schools. I believe it was 55 games in his career. The offense that he's running right now in Washington is similar to what he was doing at LSU. I don't remember about the Arizona State offense, but I know specifically based on play caller and system, it's similar to what he did last year. Cliff Kingsbury deserves a lot of credit. 42 points is not, you know, it's not an aberration that was personal last week against his former team. And the way that they got that is you've seen all of the breakdowns, all the no-huddle that they're using, the different personnel groupings, and what they're asking Jayden to do in that, you know, the air raid, the whole concept of the air raid gets completely-- It's a false narrative. It's false because there's a run game that's supported. In two or three wins, Brian Robinson's had over 100 yards rushing. Cliff is running a post-trial offense that has the concepts of what made Tyler Murray the offensive rookie of the year in 2019. So I think play caller and quarterback, the marriage of those two things, right off the bat, looks different because it's working at a more efficient rate than what you're seeing between Shane Waldron and Caleb Williams. Now, that's not to say that Caleb Williams will not be successful. It's just taking longer for him to get there because they're also tasking me. He's going through like three to four progressions every pathway, right? Like Jayden Daniels is doing this. The reads for him, I think, are simplified, and that's not a bad thing, but it's just there's different responsibilities that are being placed on both quarterbacks right now and how Washington is scheming around what was their perceived weakness in the offensive line. They also, they use the third round pick there. They brought in free agents. They've spent more attention on their weak links than I think the bears have. I think that's why you're seeing different results right now, but it does. It is frustrating because a lot of the same people, if you were to go back and watch the tape cap on that one, if you rewind April and May, guarantee a lot of those same people were the ones puffing their chest out about Caleb Williams being a can't miss prospect and the greatest things since sliced bread. And now because of what the results are for a three-in-one team with a rookie quarterback versus the two-in-two team with a rookie quarterback, they want to walk that back and play revisionist history on you. More with Courtney coming up as we review the bears and they're matching against the Carolina Panthers right here on Chicago's Home for Sports. I'm the hood Mona Lisa. My God, 42 for 58, 509 and four touchdowns. Now, I think of all the games that I've seen, that's got to be top two, top three. I've seen so far this season. That was a hell of a ball game last night with Atlanta defeating Tampa. That's an instant classic. And I mean, to watch them, like we didn't know if they were going to get the ball spiked in time and then the delay of game, you're thinking, shoot, like, who hasn't, I mean, he hasn't been perfect all night. There was the two field goals he missed back to back. It was a 40, the 41 yarder in the first quarter. And then for him to send the game to overtime, I think it was the second straight week he's had like this, you know, I mean, same field goal, like from 50 something plus yards out to get this team, either win and then to get them in overtime was was a nail-biter to begin with. And then it's just like the way that it's stacked up for Kirk, having another chance to leave these like game deciding drives to get it against the Eagles earlier this year. And he was under pressure a lot more last night than he was then and he still delivered like just it was an incredible performance for somebody. I mean, that's the reason that they went out and got him. He, for all the criticisms that Kirk Cousins gets and some of it is valid, some of it's a little overblown. I mean, the prime time narrative, you could throw that out the window. That was years ago was, but honestly, that was a Washington narrative. But even, even through his time in Minnesota to see him come up short in some really big moments, but now 36 years old coming off of the Achilles rupture to hit Cadero Hodge, who I forgot was still in the NFL. The only reason he's on the field is because Drake London was hurt the previous play. Like, what a cool walk-off moment. And the NFC South, I mean, they've got the tiebreaker right now over the box. They share the division lead, so if it comes down to it, they've got that tiebreaker as it currently stands. That's a really competitive division because I don't think the Saints are completely out of it. We know what the Carolina Panthers are, but the Saints are trying to figure out their identity after this boom the first two weeks of the season. It's going to be fun this year, watch that division, try to get more than one spot in the postseason after we all kind of figured this was Atlanta's to run away with. I mean, the Bucks have looked really good. I thought Baker Mayfield looked good last night. And it's nice that these Thursday night games are much more competitive than what we saw last week between the Giants and the Cowboys. Somewhere in all that, that falconry, you can hear Kirk Cousins say you like that. You like that? Yeah. Courtney, before we get out of here with you, we always love having you on. Is there anything brewing trade-wise? Like, if the Bears were to win the next game and then win in London, all of a sudden you're taking the buy at Ford and you're like, wow, we feel pretty good. I would like to go get a player to play on the offensive line. I've got draft capital. I've got salary cap room. Are they discussing anything or no? It's early right now because the deadlines, I mean, it's less than a month away, but I think that you have to at least keep those conversations open knowing that there's probably not going to be a whole ton of options. Offensive linemen, usually like teams aren't giving up offensive linemen. We know how many teams offensive lines have been decimated by injury this year. The Bears are one of the few that really haven't had to deal with that. So, an upgrade in play is not only going to cost you. The options right now are probably pretty slim, but you think that if they're 4 and 2 going into their week 7 buy, they come out, they've got Washington on the road and then coming right up to the trade deadline, if they feel like this is the year where they want to go for it and going forward in a very crowded division, then I would expect them to be active, but I still think it's too early right now to tell like what position they would target. Offensive line, they'll feel like a no brainer. It's just that I'm not sure there's going to be that many options for them that I mean, they've got the draft capital to do it cap. They've got that extra second round picnic here and we know Ryan polls likes to make moves in November. We'll have to see though. Yeah, I'm just watching the Browns and if they were to lose again, and all of a sudden they're like, Oh, God, we can't get out of this to Sean contract. Maybe I don't know, Joel, but Tony over somebody on that old line might be available. Yeah, it's why they're team right now. I mean, they're in the people are talking about it. Mari Cooper moving potentially to the Kansas City Chiefs being a target there because of all their receiver injuries. They'd be a team to keep an eye on again. It's like teams that if you're punting at this point of the season or thinking that you're mailing it in, do you really have that many expendable players that teams are going to want that? I think has to factor in the conversation as well. Courtney have a great weekend. Thank you very much. Thank you guys. We appreciate you. Courtney Cronin with us. I'm the car ex-tire and on a hot find, John. I'm the hood. I'm the hood. I'm the hood. I'm on a leaf. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. Do the Bears need an alpha in the locker room? We'd address that in two minutes on It's on Cap and Jay Hood.
