We gotta talk about this Monday Night Football match-up, because the eagle has absolutely choked this, and in my opinion, the coach is to blame Nick Siriani, makes a big critical mistake late in that game, and my God, Gina, over at Lockdown Eagles, is not happy about it. All good things come to an end sometimes, except for the Philadelphia Eagles winning a close game against Kirk Cousins on Monday night when they had nearly a 100% chance to win the football game. I'm Gino Camilary, host of the Lockdown Eagles Podcast, to tell you that the Eagles lose 22 to 21 against the Atlanta Falcons. In a game where, according to next-gen stats, the Atlanta Falcons pulled off the seventh, most improbable comeback since the year 2016. And if that doesn't tell you that you have a poorly coached football team, I don't know what will. Nick Siriani, there's a lot of points in this football game. Not taking the three points early on, not handing the ball off to Sequon Barkley on third down, not going for it after Sequon Barkley drops the ball on third down. You have to look at the coaching staff. This was abysmal. Nick Siriani, this might be it. - He's 100% right. I mean, that's a scathing review there from Gino, but not running that. Okay, taking the three points early in the game on fourth and four in the red zone, reprehensible, in my opinion, to count on your defense as an Eagles coach and say, "Hey, our defense that just gave up, what?" 29 points to the Packers in week one. Oh, our defense is going to hold him down. We don't need the points. We can risk it. No, you can't. No, you can't. And you're not on the goal line either. It's fourth and four. Like that is insane, but not running the football to Sequon Barkley. At the end of that game, throwing that pass. I don't care who you run it to. Quarterback sneak it with Jalen Hurts. Maybe you get the yards. If you run on third down there, maybe you pick up the first, maybe you score. That's possible if you run two. But more importantly, you run all 40 seconds a clock against a team that doesn't have any timeouts. Like any Madden player, eight years or older, knows you have to run the football then. Like anybody. So to be that risky from Nick Sirianni in the position that he's in right now, where really he's on the hot seat in Philadelphia, if they don't come back and have a strong year, just insanity. And I mean, we got to give some credit to the Curco bangs too. I've been killing Kirk Cousins the first few weeks, saying that they need to play Michael Pennics and Luke spent three minutes breaking down Kirk Cousins footwork in the pistol and why it's not good. All of that. Well, Kirk Cousins came out there. It wasn't a clean game, but he came out there and was clutch and clutch Kirk in prime time. That's how crazy this choke was by the Eagles. Yeah, I think on that last third down play, you know, we want to blame Nick Sirianni and I get it handing the ball off is the easy thing to do there. But the coach's job, right, is to put the players in a position to be successful. And the coach calls a play where the quarterback throws an accurate pass and it's a running back in the hands. And where if he catches that pass, he's got a first down in his game over. Like the coach's job is to go out there and win the game. And he called a play that was perfectly set up to win the game. I mean, Sirianni can't make Saequan Barkley catch it and Saequanni can't account for, I better not throw it to Barkley because he might drop it. Like you have to trust your players in that moment to make a play and everyone made a play on that play except for Saequan Barkley. So like I definitely agree with, you know, taking the points early in the game and like trying to trust your defense that this defense you'd think should be better. They shouldn't give almost seven yards per carry to Bijon Robinson and get one sack on maybe the most immobile quarterback in the NFL. Like there was a lot that went wrong for the Philadelphia Eagles in this game. But I find myself not harping on Saequanni. Like it's one thing if for the third down decision, it's one thing if, okay, like, Jalen Hertz throws a jump ball in the corner of the end zone or something stupid. You know, if the play call is really just, they'd never had a chance to succeed. But like if that ball hits Saequan Barkley in the hands, it might be a touchdown and there's not even a chance of a Falcons comeback. At the very least it's a first down if he catches that ball and then, but stupid things happen. Stupid things happen when you play football. Lauren, I was always told three things can happen when you throw the ball and two of them are bad. I don't care if it was a perfect pass. I don't care if Saequan Barkley had stick him on his hands and was ready. You cannot, you cannot call a pass play there. You can't do it. - But if it works, he's the genius. You know what I mean? Like, are we playing the results of the process there? - You know, like-- - I'm playing process. I think you're playing the results. You're saying, hey, you know, the play was there. If he catches it, it's perfect. I'm saying, I don't care what happens on that play. You can't throw it because that's bad process. So I will position myself as the process guy, Lauren. - Well, but like, but even though that play went wrong, you still got the ball back with 30 seconds left and time out to drive that field. And Nick Serana didn't throw the interception to Jesse Bates either. You know what I mean? There's, I'm not to be the Serana defender here 'cause I don't think he's a great player. But like, I think we could kill him for the first three quarters. The end game decision making, I don't totally hate it here. Like, I get when you trust your big free agent signing at running back to catch a pass. Like that was his whole thing as he's a good receiving back out of the backfield. Like, trust your playmakers to make a play and they let him down in that moment. - You know that, I mean, that's fair, but I just think that it never should have come to that 'cause it's too risky of a move. And, you know, you get what you get. That's what you get, Serioni, for being like that. But we do gotta give some credit to the Atlanta Falcons. I thought they really battled. Again, it wasn't a good game. It wasn't a clean game. It was an ugly game. They were down. I mean, Gino mentioned it. The Eagles had like a 99% chance to win that game, win probability at the end. So for the Eagles to, that's the kind of win right there that writes your ship and puts wind in your sails. And I gave the Falcons their credit. But the final thing that I wanna say here, Lauren, is Mike Rabel better keep his phone close to him because the Philadelphia Eagles are screaming for Mike Rabel. That's exactly what they're gonna do if they get rid of Nick Serioni anytime soon. - You go Rabel over Bill Belichick there? - Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely, I do. Yeah, Rabel is pissing vinegar. He would be perfect in Philadelphia. - You've heard us talk a lot about Fandool, America's number one sports book. Well, we have something a little different for you. Two weeks into the season and the Carolina Panthers have already pulled the plug on Bryce Young. If you are locked on Panthers, your daily Carolina Panthers podcast. Wow, I am surprised. The Carolina Panthers after two weeks have benched their number one overall pick from a year ago, their starting quarterback, Bryce Young. And he was terrible on Sunday in that home opening loss to the Chargers. He was terrible the week prior on the road against the Orleans. The offense was inept because the quarterback was terrible. And I told you all the last two games, I'm not going to sit up here and defend the way he played because Bryce Young was awful. I sat here though and said, I didn't feel like it made a lot of sense after one week, after two weeks to move on for Bryce Young. I did not expect the Carolina Panthers to fire Frank Reich after 11 games last year because they felt like Young wasn't being developed properly. Then fired Scott Fitterer who traded all those assets, including DJ Moore. And let's go back to the fall prior, Christian McCaffrey, the San Francisco, some of the picks they used, they used that to move up to get Bryce Young. So they gave up McCaffrey and DJ Moore in order to get to number one overall pick and select Bryce Young to solve their quarterback problem here in Carolina. So they got rid of Scott Fitterer, brought in Dan Morgan from down the hallway, hired Dave Kanalos who had worked wonders of Geno Smith in Seattle, then last year of Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay, brought those two guys in to be the new brain trust along with Brent Tillis coming over from Kansas City. Then they went out and spent a lot of money on the offensive line that was banged up last year. They got rid of Bozeman. They got rid of some of the other guys out there, brought in Robert Hunt for $100 million, brought in Damian Lewis for a bunch of money, moved Corvik to center, been traded for Deontae Johnson, went out and traded up to the first round to get Xavier Lee Gett, got Jonathan Brooks, made all of these moves to help Bryce Young. Then after two games of this experiment with Dave Kanalos, the supposed quarterback Whisperer, they're moving on. So yeah, I'm surprised that based off of all that they have done over the course of the last 10 months that they've decided that after two games where Bryce was terrible, I am not arguing against that fact that they're done with it, that they are no longer needing to see anything more from Bryce Young for the time being. And we'll get into the comments that Dave Kanalos had. I really don't understand why this organization even has press conferences when things like this happen because David Tepper never answers why he fired Frank Reich or Matt Rule. We know why, but he never answered why that happened. Dave Kanalos did not even tell us why he decided to move on to Bryce Young either than this gives us the best opportunity to win on Sunday. Not to say he gives him the best opportunity to win next week or moving forward. Just this Sunday, they're focused on the Raiders and that road trip. So I'm surprised that they bench Bryce Young. Quite honestly, I feel like giving everything that they did to trying to put a better team around Bryce kind of really make a lot of sense to me why you spend all this time trying to fix everything around him and you gave up after two weeks is if you were going to do this, if you thought if Bryce Young comes out and plays terribly, we're gonna move on after two games. Why did you have him be your quarterback in the first place? It kind of goes back to a couple of years ago after a one in four start, they move on from Matt Rule. He had already been terrible the first two years. If you were gonna move on and the whole caveat of he can stay if they get a rock star OC which was never gonna happen, why even bring him back? So that's just one thing that never makes sense to me whether it's in the NFL and whatever it is, why after a couple of weeks into the season, you have band and ship from someone who's already embattled in the first place. Like if you didn't believe in them, then why was he out there week one in New Orleans and in this past Sunday against the Chargers? So that's one thing that just I don't really understand but this is an organization that makes no sense at all and probably for the sake of the locker room and the health of the team, this is probably the right decision. Long term for the Carolina Panthers, is this the right decision? I guess we'll have to find out depending upon who they bring in next because they have not given any of these quarterbacks, any sort of opportunity or pieces around them to actually have success when they're here in Carolina. So hard for me to believe moving forward under David Tepper's ownership that anything's going to change. Bryce Schung clearly has no confidence, did not look comfortable in a pocket. I looked at the Pro Football Focus numbers. He was kept clean 86% of the time yesterday and had 84 yards, that's just brutal. You can't win with the guy who's inaccurate, who's turned the football over, who does not look confident at all. So when that's a problem, when he's not confident, with a clean pocket, he's not accurate, he's turned the football over. Yeah, eventually you got to make a decision and you got to move on. I would have felt like they would have maybe wanted to see it through a little bit longer but they decided that they had seen enough. So first off, after all that I've just said there, like yeah, Bryce is off for the first two weeks. And after watching the frustration from Adam Feelings on Sunday, it kind of felt like the Panthers had already reached the breaking point two weeks into the season when Deontay Johnson is also talking to the media being asked, are you surprised? You guys have not taken any shots down the field and he said, yeah, I'm surprised. I don't call the plays. We just got to put things on film, making it sound like I'm only going to be here for one year anyways. But yeah, that's not ideal. When you're two starting receivers, the top two guys that you have here to help out your quarterback are showing those signs of visible frustration two weeks into the season and that there are booze in the crowd. I still have to follow or mention this 'cause he's been here since the beginning. Never has he ever been to an home opener, whether it was at Clemson or here at Erickson Stadium, now known as Bank of America Stadium, never had he ever seen fans booing the team on the first game of the season at home or in the first game of the season at home. Week two and there were boo birds and plenty of players had something to say about it and I understand their frustration. You got to play better. It comes to the territory, but that's how toxic things have become here in Carolina, mainly because of all the decision that David Tepper is paying, but also because the quarterback clearly does not look like somebody who at this point in time, if ever can play at the NFL level. But I was holding out hope that they keep playing them. He finally gained some confidence. Trusts what is around him, what he sees and looks like the guy that we saw during training camp and the glimpse that we saw last year and I come back to the Packers game, clearly that was an anomaly based off of everything else that we've seen through the 18 games of Bryce Young being the starting quarterback in Carolina. But they decided that with Adam Thiel and being frustrated, Johnson being frustrated, just how inept the offense was where through the first two games of the season, franchise low, 13 points, 345 yards that this was just not something that they could continue to do. They had to move on, they had to pull the plug after two weeks into the Dave Canales help Bryce Young experiment. Number two, I don't think that they're gonna go back to him after this. Canales would not answer whether this was gonna be for this week or beyond. I just don't see how after 18 games, after all that they did to feasibly help Bryce Young this offseason that after pulling the plug two weeks into it that they're gonna go back. I don't know how you build someone's confidence with them sitting on the bench. If anything, just going back and looking at everything the Panthers have done as far as Bryce Young's development, clearly he should have sat last year. They weren't working on the fundamentals like his footwork. They're more focused on just getting them ready to play so that they could see whether they made the right investment, which yeah, looks like they made the wrong investment and a lot of y'all have felt like that for a very long time. I was willing to at least see it through until they came to this conclusion or this decision, which now makes very obvious that they chose the right, the wrong guy and they should have probably taken CJ's drought. Obviously even though it's not play revisionist history, plenty of people who cover the NFL draft and y'all know me, I am not a draft guy at all. But plenty of those people were talking about how Bryce Young was a top one on their board. There's reports out of that that the Texans would have taken Bryce Young. So we can sit here, try to pretend that everyone is on CJ's drought. Now there was thoughts just from Peter King just thinking, Frank Reich's always had a tall quarterback. He's always had guys this size. He's going to take CJ's drought. At no point has there ever been any actual credible reporting. That was just Peter King assuming, not reporting, just assuming that's what the Panthers were doing when they traded up to number one. So I just don't see how they're going to go back to him. 18 games in, you brought a new head coach, new general manager from down the hallway, new weapons, offensive lines been improved, and you said, yeah, we've seen enough. You're not going to build us confidence now. He didn't happen to begin with after last season's beating. Didn't have it the first two weeks. And now you sat him on the bench and apparently saw a report out there that Bryce Young was surprised by this news. So clearly he didn't think that this was going to be it after a couple of weeks. So I can't imagine he was going to come back from this. And just how toxic things have been in owner who's never patient. I just don't feel like he's going to come back. And that David Tepra had to be a part of this decision. And I've said this before, number three, starting any Dalton doesn't do anything for the Panthers in the interim or in the long term. They're still going to lose games. Because I've talked about they've only scored 13 points in that 345 yards in the first two week franchise lows to begin a season. They've also given up 73 points. They're almost giving up 200 yards on the ground per game. The defense stakes. So the defense is not going to get better with their ground being out. Maybe they get a little bit healthier, but that edge rush was terrible. Judevian Clowney was the lowest graded defender according to PFF on Sunday in that loss against the Chargers. You have a team and Jacey Horn said it. If you can't stop the run, you can't stop anything in this league and they can't stop the run. So I don't see how they're going to stop anything. So Annie Dalton comes in, probably gives him a better chance to win, just based off of what we've seen over the course of the 13 years prior of Annie Dalton being quarterback in the NFL, mainly being a starter. And what we even saw from him last year, what we've seen from Bryce Schunk. Don't necessarily doubt that he gives him a better chance to win. I just don't think it's going to lead the Panthers to not be still in the top five. I don't think it's going to happen being a playoff contender because they've been awful on defense and special teams in these first two weeks of the season anyways. And there's not much reason to believe either one of those is actually going to change because they put in any Dalton as their quarterback. Now the offense probably going to look a little bit better, I would think, but everywhere else on the roster, still bad. And then I guess lastly here, I felt like the season was about Bryce Schunk. I felt like last year was when you bring him in, you give up all that you gave up to get him and you bring in this coaching staff that's supposed to be this rock star coaching staff, supposed to work at the quarterback and you move on for Frank Wright. And you brought in Dave Kanales and all the things I said before that they did this offseason to help Bryce. I felt like this year is about Bryce. And the Panthers, at least Dave Kanales, came out and said on Monday that no, this is not about Bryce Schunk, this is about the Carolina Panthers, it's about trying to win football games this year. That's what it's about. And that's the decision that he says he made, but I'm no fool, we know who made this decision. It's the same guy who made a decision to take Bryce Schunk in the first place. And the main problem here in Carolina and his name is David Tepper, and as long as he's around, we're going to continue to have these conversations here. Unfortunately, because he is the worst owner in the NFL and we are all hostages here in Charlotte, hoping that one day a coconut hits him on the head and a guy realizes, oh, I'm the problem. Let me stop screwing everything up. Chiefs get the bad news, Isaiah Pacheco is out. From the land of the three and the home of the Chiefs, this is the locked on Chiefs podcast. Now, if you're somebody that's excited about the prospects of old friends returning, this is the day for you. A long, long, long debated concept was the idea of Kareem Hunt coming back to this team. I have told you repeatedly, over and over and over and over, there's no way I could see that happening because of the way it ended, not just with the team. This team is vastly different than the team in terms of the locker room, the Kareem Hunt left. It's about the management and in particular, the owner. The owner was pissed off and lied to. And so I never saw this coming. The fact that Brett Beach is going to bring Kareem Hunt in for a visit on Tuesday. You may be listening to this on Tuesday. It's happening now, if that's the case. Tells me one of two things. First, Clark Hunt has decided to at least explore the idea of forgiving Kareem Hunt for the first go around. And this team values over anything else, experience in the offense. And yes, it was short-lived and yes, it was quite a while ago. There has been a lot of evolution in the office since then. The touchstone here for Kareem Hunt is the fact that he has been here and done that in some form or fashion before. - Yeah, and let's be clear. Kareem Hunt isn't going to be the guy he was when he was here the last time either. He is a vastly different player. I'm not gonna say he can't be effective in the system. Andy re-knows how to get the best out of his player. So I fully believe that if Kareem Hunt is signed by Kansas City that he will be successful. Now, that's not going to be what he was when he was here five years ago or however long ago it was. But I 100% agree with you. The fact that you look at what Clark Hunt is willing to do to allow Kareem Hunt back, a lot of people don't really see the huge issue. He lied directly to Clark Hunt. That is a huge issue. It's not just something you sweep under the bridge. So I'm sure that Kareem is going to have to have a conversation with Clark or maybe he already has. So at this point, Clark is looking at it from the perspective of this could possibly take us to where we could get back to another Super Bowl. And that's always really Jason after. And I guarantee you they're gonna have a discussion of some sort. And Kareem's in a much different situation as well because not only is it not five years ago or however long ago it was that he was here, but he doesn't have the same skill set one and he's not gonna have the same leeway that he would have had or that he did have because he doesn't have the same skill set. That goes back to what everybody says, a higher skill, a higher allowance. I mean, you're allowed to do more. In this sense, if he screws up, he's gonna be gone. - Clark Hunt has to be thinking three feet. This is historic. You guys heard me all summer long. If you weren't with us all summer long, by the way, we are full service year-round podcasting here folks. Whether it's free agency, the draft, or that space that you're waiting for training camp, we got you and we've talked about this quite a lot. Everything, it's all in for this three feet 'cause no one's ever done it. You're the only team in recent, I mean what, 20 years, that even has the chance to make this kind of history. So it is something that changes the parameters in the way that you think, right? And for Kareem Hunt, there's an incident, I know there's a lot of incidents with Kareem Hunt, there was an incident at once, where he was very plainly talking to someone as he was being detained somewhere about the fact, hey, I should be playing for a Super Bowl right now and I'm not. Like there is a sense there that he has something to make up for. I hope that that's still present in his current mindset. He's not as fast as he was. Last year, he did not have the breakaway speed that you'd see him get up to speed at times earlier in his career. He still has great contact balance. He can still catch the ball. He still understands what the defense is trying to do, but he's not the athlete he was. So it is a somewhat changed role, but it's a chance for redemption for him and a chance for him to come in and back up the younger guys that are here. And I think he's the same age, if not a little bit older than some I should be right, I could be wrong, I have to go double check that. But I don't expect him to walk in if they do sign him and have some kind of starting role right away. A, we have no idea what kind of shape he's in. And B, you've proven that you have options on this team. He would add to that room certainly, but I don't see him taking it over to you. I don't see him taking it over unless he is just in such great shape that he looks like he's five years younger than he did when he played last year. And that's it. I mean, that's a big gift. If I'm correct, I don't believe he played. He wasn't in a training camp for anybody, was he? That I remember, don't believe so. Yeah, so he hasn't touched. I mean, he hasn't really played football for over a year at this point. And now you're in a situation where he's coming in here. The one thing that I think he has going for him and the reason I think that Kansas City is open to this is because he does have experience in the system. And if you look at how slow it's gone for a guy like Samashe P. Ryan, who is a veteran in the NFL and knows a ton of football and understands things, he is still not able to get up to speed to where you would want him to be in this offense. And it could still be another couple of weeks before he's probably where they really wanted to be. And that's not a shot at Samashe. It's just, it's the reality of being in this offense and it's so much different than what he's been in in the past. So I do think that there's going to be some issues there. And Kareem is going to have to adjust to the differences that Kansas City has gone through since the last time he was here. But he does have the ability to step in and know some of the offense, be able to step in and probably run some of the same plays that are going to be staples that haven't changed. And he could help them in some regards and that regard. And he's going to be better than probably what they already have on the practice squad, would be my guess. Obviously that is just based on where he was last year. That's not based on anything that I've seen this year 'cause like I said, it wasn't in training camp. So you have no idea what you're gonna be getting. It makes sense for them to bring him in. It makes sense for them to work him out. He may not be somebody that could be ready to go in three weeks. We don't know until whether or not they sign him. - Yeah, I'm interested to see if they do because it is, I can see both sides of it. It's an interesting push for the three-peat that you need to put all your chips on the table. I get that. But it was so outlandish just 24 hours ago that I wouldn't have believed it if you told me. - Well, and I said multiple times on Twitter to multiple different people. And I think I even said it on the subtext line. I didn't see there's any chance that they'd bring Cream Hunt back. The one thing I will say though, is the thing that sticks out to me on this one is you talked about it just a second ago with his comment of I should be playing for Super Bowl right now. He knows what he messed up in Kansas City. And I guarantee you, if he is in Kansas City and he is on this team for that three-peat run in the playoffs and in the Super Bowl, he is going to do whatever he can because he wants a chance to have one of those rings that he gave up with what happened to him. - Game time makes getting to the ballpark even faster and easier. Your daily San Francisco 49ers podcast, part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. - Deebo Samuel is out. And it looks like he's going to miss a couple of weeks with a calf strain. So calf's doing a number on the San Francisco 49ers offense right now, not headed for IR though, but according to Kyle Shanahan, a couple of weeks and Deebo got hurt late in the game. He, you could tell he was a little bit banged up during the game. He left the game. He was actually came back and he was on the field and was involved in the final drive of the game. So Deebo, hurt late calf injury. He's going to be out now a couple of weeks. So no Chris McCaffrey, no Deebo Samuel 49ers one in one and they will be without those guys for at least a couple more weeks now. Deebo was a big part of the offense, right? I think, you know, Jordan Mason's the big story offensively. He's been over a hundred yards rushing in both of these games with Deebo Samuel has been the 49ers leading wide receiver. - You know, I was thinking about it and I was just like, man, like how we were all worried about Brandon and I coming off of an injury and you have to worry about like, you know, the soft tissue injuries and it's Deebo that ends up getting his training early on. But he's done a lot, not only is he a guy that they put out there at receiver. Shoot, you know, last game against the New York Jets. How many times did he carry the ball? Was it eight times, you know, running inside the tackles, outside the tackles? This game, they had him back there on kickoff return. And although I think he only had like one opportunity to return a kick, but just him being out there just more usage. So Deebo Samuel has kind of been the unsung hero, just a little bit of a guy who's kind of been all over the place for the 49ers, more of that, you know, jack of all trades. And now you're potentially going to miss that for a guy who in this game came up big as a receiver. You know, he had over a hundred receiving yards and I felt like some of the receptions that he made were huge. I mean, third downs in traffic, you know, jumping up over across the middle. You know, I thought Deebo Samuel, as just a receiver, played very well in that game and missing him for two weeks, hopefully is not as bad as it was last year when he was out a few weeks. And you could really tell a difference in the offense this time. Again, very Brandon, now you turn the money, he's going to have to step up. And like I said before, I don't even think it's just so much Brandon, now you've got to think, you know, Kyle Shanahan, draw up stuff specifically for your receiver, use him as much as you need, you know, make him the focal point of the offense, see how he handles that. That's going to be a little tough for him, just kind of coming back and still trying to get in game shape, but a huge loss. Not having Deebo Samuel for a couple of weeks. You know, it's interesting too, because the yak hasn't been there. The yak bros are there, but the yak hasn't been there. And the 49ers are a little bit down and yards per out run. They're down on yak, passing yards down throughout the league. How about this stat, actually? This one from Relaid from Steve Palazzolo, formerly of Pro Football Focus. So here's passing touchdowns throughout the NFL through two weeks. In 2019, there was 105 passing touchdowns by every team in the first two weeks of the season. Then it went up to 110 for two years in a row, 2020 and 2021, even through the COVID weirdness of 2020. Then in 2022, back down to 105. So that's 105, 110, 110, 105 for four straight years, 2029 through 2022. Then yet, last year, passing touchdowns dipped by 20 or 19, all the way down to 86 passing touchdowns last year through the first two weeks. And then this year, 20 more pending Monday night football. And I don't think there's gonna be 20 or 40 passing touchdowns later tonight, as we're recording this on Monday, late afternoon, early evening. Games about to start here in a little bit. 66 passing touchdowns through two weeks. Compared to 110 just a couple of years ago, passing touchdowns through two weeks. So passing is way down throughout the NFL. So it feels like if it feels like the 49ers passing games a little weird to start the year, they're not the only ones. And I think yardage-wise, the 49ers are doing just fine with what, 230, 250 last week. And then over 300 passing yards this week. So the 49ers are actually even ahead of the game a little bit as far as the passing games go, even though it feels a little off, especially after week two. - Do you think we can attribute that to just the lack of preseason reps? Like really league? - I thought you were gonna say Jim Harbaugh. I thought you were gonna blame Jim Harbaugh in his like jumbo three tied insets. - Dude, I took the over on Justin Herbert's yards for the entire season, which was like 36, I was like 36 hundred yards for Justin Herbert. Give me that please. And he's throwing for like 75 yards a game. (laughing) - Yeah, hey, Jim Harbaugh's two and O though. - It is, what do we know? - Jim Harbaugh's team's haven't been two and O in the NFL since 2012. - But so do you think that that's what the issue is? Just preseason has kind of become non-existent. And now teams are using the first quarter of the season to really kind of get into that groove offensively. - Is this the second or third year of the three preseason games? - It might be the second. - If it's the second, then that's a huge correlation with the three preseason games and then teams even utilizing those preseason games less in those years with fewer preseason games on top of it dropped all the way from 105 to 86. I think 2022 and I think there was three preseason games as well, right? This is the third season of 17 regular season games. Where's the only the second? - All right, I'm pulling it up right now. So 2022, three preseason games. - Okay, yeah, so that's when it started. That was the first year of it. It went down a little bit, only five touchdowns. - Ah, 2021, three. But I think that, was that the COVID year? - 2020 was the COVID year where there was like fake fans in the stands and all of that. - I think that got rid of preseason altogether that year. - Yeah, that was a weird one. But then there was supposed to be four, there was supposed to be four preseason games. They canceled every single one in 2020. And then when they came back in '21, that was when they went with three. But I also think that, and it looks like if you look at stats, I think guys were still kind of playing, even in like the third preseason game, you look at the 49er stats and it's like trade lance, trade lance. Guys, the starters were getting reps. Jimmy Garoppolo, I see him on the stat sheet there. So your starters were playing. And I feel like now, even for the 49ers to roll out, their starters in that third preseason game for a few series, that's something you're just not seeing around the league. So it's just kind of falling off so much. I'm gonna go back to the Harbaugh days, in 2011, 12, 13, where guys played at least one or two series in the first couple of games in that third preseason game. They played a ton, and they played not just in the halftime, but even past halftime. And I remember that with even Kyle Shanahan, with Jimmy Garoppolo, like there's a preseason game in my head right now, where the 49ers are playing the Colts. And Jimmy Garoppolo was playing into the third quarter of a preseason game. And you're just not seeing that, not only by the 49ers, but you're just not seeing that around the league. So when you look at a lot of these numbers that are down, or if you're watching the 49ers offense, and you feel like, man, there's something missing. Man, it's a little stagnant, or it's a little off where, you know, why is Brock Purdy holding on to the ball a little bit longer than he typically does? Well, I think a lot of these guys are using this time to kind of get in that groove. And I think for not a fan, faithful fans around the league for opposing teams, I think you just have to be a little bit more patient with offices and specifically quarterbacks, 'cause it has been down. - A lot of teams playing more two high shells as well, keeping things in front of them. As the 49ers did on a certain play, they ended up being a 97-yard touchdown. I want to get into that play a little bit more. We got the end zone angle. What exactly happened? Fred Warner talks about what happened on that play. I want to officially start the bandwagon for Fred Warner being defensive player of the year. We got PFS stats on Warner, on the 49ers offensive line, and a couple of those holdouts for the 49ers that need to step up big now. No CMC, no Debo Samuel, Trent Williams. Especially now, especially on offense, when you're talking about playmakers, Brandon IU, need to step up big time. - You've heard us talk a lot about FanDul America's number one sports book. Your daily podcast on the Michigan Wolverines. Part of the Lockdown podcast network. - Alex Orgy cut a surprisingly, I say this surprisingly, I'll explain why in a moment, named the starting quarterback against USC. I think that's surprising because I didn't anticipate, I was talking to some colleagues before the press conference today. And they're, I said, "Do you think that we're gonna hear anything?" And they're like, "No, why would you run more?" Even say it. So that kind of tells you that they're gonna put the full force behind Alex Orgy. 'Cause he says, "Hey, he's gonna be the starting quarterback. "He's gonna go forward. "It's gonna be all him." So I think that that is interesting because obviously that means that he's gonna have the full week with the ones. Everything is going to be geared behind him. Everything that they, he says they had everything installed as far as offensively is what the types of stuff he would run. But that means that they can hone those things this week. They can figure out what kind of passes work best for him and what kind of run place. So this is welcome and encouraged news. I think more needs to happen offensively 'cause this is one of the rare circumstances where I feel like what the fans want is what the fans should get. I feel like a lot of times we've, even before this podcast, spending time thinking back to 2017, everyone's like, you know, we need less Wilton Spade. We need John O'Corne, John O'Corne. And I was on the Wolverine 24/7 podcast at that time being like, careful what you wish for, man. Careful what you wish for because that doesn't necessarily work out the way that you think it's going through. There's a reason why Wilton Spade's starting and a lot of it has to do with that. He's making the right decisions as he's going through his reads and things of that nature. John O'Corne might not do that. And sure enough, John O'Corne did not do that. We learned that very quickly after that Purdue game when everyone was celebrating their correct answer. And I was lamenting having been wrong for that one game. But with what the three positions or, you know, let's say three positions, I think that it's interesting that the fans I think are just right. It needed to be Alex Orgy as the quarterback. He gives you the biggest upside. He gives you the most. It's, he's the bigger playmaker overall. Like, and that's no knock on Davis Warren, but just his ceiling is higher, right? So you just, you absolutely need to build your offense around a guy. It's like, when you got people saying all, you know, all this time, like he's like Jalen Milro. He can run, he can throw, he can do all these things. And then you decide to settle in on a guy that can throw. But, and you said that he was taking care of the football in practice, obviously that didn't translate into games. Some of the most questionable throws that I've ever seen a quarterback make. It's not like his upside is so high, right? Because even JJ McCarthy, we didn't really see him run a lot, but what was he brought in to do quite a bit, run in his freshman year. It was, he was coming in and just running the ball and occasionally throwing. But generally, it was his ability to be that dual threat. Now, Michigan starting Alex Orgy, which we saw a little bit of him there in the second half, of course, after the third interception. I hope that they don't just force him strictly to kind of just sit there and hand off and, and you know, throw and like not have a heck of a lot of design runs. I think that you need to have a little bit of the unknown built in and say like, all right, you're gonna look at like one or two reads. If it's not there, you're gonna take off, right? Like you, you know, you're gonna do more of an option. Don't always hand off, you need to keep the ball. Just don't force him to be something that he necessarily, right? You let him be him and work within the confines of that. But outside of Alex Orgy, I thought Greg Crippen looked like the better center. When you saw Andrew Gentry come in as the sixth lineman, I was sure on more did say today that, that Judy's grated out better than Crippen, technically. I still thought you saw just a much different offensive movement with Crippen in that center. And then I thought that Gentry was an absolute bulldozer when it came in as the sixth lineman. I think Link played better. But to me, it's like, what are we really missing here? And maybe we are missing something, but, you know, maybe whatever we see from Link, as I was saying in the game, we wanna see, and this is gonna be better on video than an audio. It's kind of like calling back to Silicon Valley. I wanna see a 11-link that's like this, not like this, right? Like this, not like this. And that's-- I wanna see him vertical, not horizontal. And he was a little bit more vertical in this game, but you need to be able to see him standing upright. So with that in mind, I feel like this is-- hey, you're gonna go for it. You're gonna make your changes in week four. I know people are lamenting wine, you know. Now you're doing it, okay, but they're doing it, right? I understand it took three games to get to this point. But at least now they're at least changing the quarterback. You hope that if those other guys are better, as it kind of has looked in-game, that you make those decisions and you change those things up. Because I feel like we have been spending all this time having to talk about how the pieces we didn't expect to be starters a month ago have been problems for this team. So-- and then you see the guys that we expected to be the starters, coming in and not being big problems. And that makes me also even wonder if it's not-- like Evan Link, what, like Jeff Percy was great against a pretty good Rutgers defense in 2022. I just-- to me, it's like I just question how they got to these decisions. And because this isn't like an established coaching staff, it feels a little bit more like, okay, we can question these decisions. But if you're gonna start Alex Orgy, which they are, like put him in the best scenario possible. And putting him in the best scenario possible is just, what does he do well? What does he do best? And like, let him roll with that. Let him do everything in his power to be successful. And then you can build on that over the course of time. You hope that he can have the same trajectory as Jalen Millrow, where by the end of the year, we're all saying like, man, this is one of the best players in college football, but you got to put him in that position. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an Isaiah Bond to throw to. But that's where like, so do 51 on Twitter. I want to call up his tweet because I endorse this. I fully endorse this, but with caveats, okay? So here's what he said. There's an opportunity to create a dynamic offense. Or GQB, Mollings RB1, Edwards utility RB slot wide receiver, Loveland, hopefully healthy. We don't know yet. Sharon said he's deferring to the doctors. That clearly means it's more than precautionary. That he says do continue saying that forces a defense to spread its resources. You want to stack the box and leave 18 and seven one on one or cover them and leave a light box for 20 and 28 to work. That is, I endorse this. And here's what I think should happen though. You do this, but you have Donovan on the field at all times. You can have him in that formation. We've talked about this a lot. You can have him in that formation where he is, he's to one side and got Mollings to the other side. It doesn't have to be a one or the other. It's just, I think that you have that. You can put him anywhere on the field and just create the mismatches. I feel like that's one of the biggest things that they haven't done is saying like Donovan Edwards, we need to find ways to get him one on one against a safety or a linebacker. And lately he's been doing a better job. Like his yards for Kerry was very good. Not quite as high as Kalell's, but still like you're starting to see that Donovan Edwards that you hope to see. He talked today a little bit about rhythm and all that kind of stuff and how it's about getting into rhythm. But I think that you put him in a position to succeed is to say we aren't necessarily just going to run you as a running back between the tackles all the time. Like we'll do that sometimes. We'll also get you involved in the screen game. We'll also get you the ball in the flat. We'll have you run routes, all of these things. Like he's kind of a Jameer Gibbs style back that hasn't had quite the success that Jameer Gibbs has had between the tackles out of late because he's more of the rhythmic back. But to me, put him in a position to succeed. Find ways to get him the ball. Find ways to make this little bit more dynamic. And then you can also play off of that. There's lots of options where you can look at this offense and say it can be very successful just in an unconventional way. But they just seem very determined to run kind of what the scheme has been the last three years. And I don't think that that's necessarily the way to go. Of course, when you're watching it at home on ESPN, you get up to the minute updates. They're talking to the sideline reporter, you know what I mean? It's like you find out pretty quickly what's going on. But it's like we're in the stadium, and I see him hand the ball off. I'm like, okay, Trey Wozner picked up like three, four yards, whatever. And then we see Quinn on the ground and he just looked dead. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like Quinn just on the ground. And we all like, you know what I'm saying? Like, did he get hit late? Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, what happened? Like, you know, and then we're all just trying to speculate. Like, what could be wrong with Quinn? You know, and then eventually we found out, you know, strained abdomen, oblique. Looked like it happened a few plays before he, you know, went out. Like, he got touched, you know what I mean? It kind of, you know, if you're watching on YouTube, kind of did that little weird thing where you saw her hurt in really bad, you know, and then he wasn't contacted the two plays, but then ultimately left the game. And then came back in street clothes in the second half. They are saying that injury is not as bad as they thought it would be. You know, he is weak to weak with the strained oblique. Likely won't play against you L.M. You know, we'll see after that. But, you know, what are your thoughts on, you know, quarterback one being heard? And, you know, I guess what is your level of concern moving forward regarding this injury for Texas? I have two different levels of concern, John. One for Texas. I will give it about a six losing your starting quarterback. The guy that has the experience is still a theme, regardless of the name behind the jersey of the backup quarterback behind them. Let's, let's be honest, Quinn Ewers was in the running for the Heisman. Quinn Ewers was the one that led this team to the playoff slasher. Quinn Ewers has been the guy for this Texas team for what has been the past couple of years. And if that guy goes down, you're still presented with issues, especially in a year where you are trying to cement yourself in the SEC. So, I do want Texas fans to take this with a little bit of seriousness. Yes, I know it's super exciting to have Arch finally stepping in, at least for a game or two or three or whatever the case is going to be. But, you know, you still got some, some key games in this timeframe. Obviously, you got George coming up in a couple of weeks. You wonder if Quinn Ewers will even be there back in that stretch of time. You know, they got you all. Monroe, next week I believe. Greg, if I'm wrong on that, John, but you got a nice little test. And then Mississippi State is, I believe, is after that. So, there's another really good test right there for Arch to see. Can he take a team in a complete four quarter game and really win and not have any issues? Or the offense doesn't miss a beat or any of those things. So, just, just a six, just for what Texas is having to go through again, Arch is very, very good. So, I think he's going to be able to fit in very well. Sark is going to scheme. He's going to be able to scheme around his back or quarter back, because that's what you're supposed to do. He's still very young, so you want to protect him in some ways. You know, I don't expect Texas to go all out, but I expect the extensions of what they're trying to use for their run fits in the run scheme to be able to alleviate some of the pressure on him. Obviously, with a lot of RBOs and screens with Ryan Wingo and what they can do with Isaiah Bond, I think you'll see a lot of the other guys really start to get more into the mix than you were kind of being the one to wield them on his arm. My next level of concern is for yours himself. John, how many years has it been now? Since this has been a yours, like when yours injured? It's now three straight years that he would miss time. Three straight years as a starter that he would miss time. Or is it four? I believe, yeah, this is three. I think, what was the last-- Oh, yeah, this would be four. Because it would be his junior year of high school, and then all three years he's been a starter at Texas. He would have missed time due to injury. So it's four straight seasons now. So now we're developing the moniker of Hurt God for Queen Hughes, and that's a thing where you say, okay, even when this young man returns, this is still an area of concern for Texas, because what happens, you know, for yours, if he goes down for real, not to mention, yours is back as a starter for the Texas Longhorns for a lot of those reasons, for injuries, not having the full slate of game to show that he is an NFL collar recorder back, and which is pulled back the amount of time for arts to kind of step in and take the reins. And so for a guy like him, it's easy for me to have such a high level of concern. I would probably give that about a good seven to eight for yours, because, you know, we're in the SEC, we're in a much higher level of play, and again, teams are Georgia on the list, and teams, you know, that actually play some pretty good defense on the play-offs are a much larger slate this time around. We have a lot more games to play, and so if yours is just good for the long haul, obviously the answer now is no, because he's going to be missing a couple of games, but I think there's a good level of concern around everywhere. Again, this Texas team was very, very good. I don't want to dive away too far from the U.S. thing, but I think injuries as a whole could be something that you kind of want to look at more when it comes to this Texas team, and just not hope that it doesn't become something that's too apparent as they go along the season. Yeah, so, you know, when I look at it, you know, like I said, Queenie was week to week, when you look at the next three weeks for the Longhorns, I think you know your major priority is just trying to make sure you can have him healthy for that two-week stretch where you play Oklahoma and then Georgia, right? So Georgia would be October 19th. Oklahoma would be October 12th, right? So you have about a month until that time to make sure that Queenie was can be as healthy as possible. You know, I know with the abdomen and the oblique strain, they did say it's not as serious as, you know, they initially thought. So, you know, maybe it's lingering at that point. Maybe he's 100% healthy by that point. I do think he'll be healthy enough to play football at a high level. And then you can just hope you keep him upright enough or, you know, keep him, I guess, unscathed enough to where, you know, it doesn't aggravate or get worse at any point throughout the season. When you look at it the next three weeks for the Texas Longhorns, ULM at home, you know, I know Tony said that's going to be a test. I don't know what type of test, you know what I mean? But Texas should be able to beat ULM even with archmen and buy 40, you know, plus points. Then you got Mississippi State at home the week after that. Look, Mississippi State just lost to Toledo on Saturday, right? I know they're a SEC team. And so, you know, you do have to, you know, go in there and you still got to beat him, you know, and that could be a tough game, especially with your backup quarterback. I didn't say I didn't say I lay my role as the test. I say he has some tests in the next couple of weeks before yours gets bad. So, so, Texas State is going to be on it. Right. So, like I said, Mississippi State, you know, that is an SEC team that did just lose to Toledo. You know, obviously it's going to be a tougher challenge with archmening, but, you know, with this Texas team and the amount of talent they have on offense and defense, the game at home, you know, it's going to be rocking for the first SEC game for Texas. You know, that definitely should be a game that Texas is still able to take care of even with archmening. And then you got the buy week after that, right? Especially with when you were going down right now, what a perfectly timed buy week to give him another week to heal up and kind of be ready for that Oklahoma game. So, I think really, you know, like I said, just your only focus right now. I think Texas can go to and out without them. They certainly are going to beat ULM and they should beat Mississippi State without them. So, then it comes down to can you get him healthy enough by October 12th to go out there and play his best football against Oklahoma and then the next week against Georgia, now the number two team in the country. And like Tony said, you know, Quinn's track record showed us that we had to be, you know, ready for this type of possibility, you know what I mean? We had to be ready for him potentially missing games. We saw his junior year of high school, the sports hernia, right? And then 2022, the shoulder against Alabama. Then last year, I think believe it was the shoulder again, or something, you know. Yeah, clavicle and injuries. Yeah, against Houston, right? And then, you know, now with the strained oblique, right? And so obviously Sartre, you know, nudist was a possibility. And I think Texas is probably better equipped than almost any team in the nation to have to go to their backup in a spot like this. When you do have a, you know, player like Archman who's able to step in and score five touchdowns like he did in that manner against UTSA. So as long as you can get Quinn back, you know, healthy or, you know, 80 to 90% by the Oklahoma game, I think you'll be fine. And, you know, Texas still has everything they want to do in front of them. A prime member. You can listen to this lockdown podcast ad-free on Amazon Music. Download the Amazon Music app today.
