Miami Dolphins lost much more than just a football game on Thursday night. You are locked on Dolphins, your daily Miami Dolphins podcast. Dolphins lost 31 to 10 to Buffalo. In a game that I felt was super frustrating in the first half, this game was lost in the first half. And then you lost much more than just the game in the second half. And this was a matchup between two teams who were one team trying to change the narrative and the other team trying to continue their sustained success against an opponent. And the way the game played in the first half played like that. We'll talk about the game, because I got a lot of stuff that drove me nuts with how this game was called, the decision making and the management of this football game, some of which paralleled a lot of the same stuff that you dealt with against Jacksonville twice, going forward on fourth down at midfield. We're going to talk about it. But first, we have to talk about the third quarter injury that turned this game from not just bad to worse, but bad to nightmarish, which is two a ton of a little scrambling on a fourth and four in the red zone and lowering the shoulder on safety to Marhamlin and ending up suffering a concussion on the play Dolphins quickly ruled him out. He was thankfully able to walk off the field under his own power, but the concussion history with two a ton of a lower is well documented. And there's a lot of questions, short term, long term, this season beyond career wise for toa that is going to get thrust back into all of the conversation that takes place with toa. And unfortunately, I reflect on the play, and you feel even worse about it, because it was an avoidable incident. You are the franchise quarterback. The team just gave you a big vote of confidence, right? And you're down three touchdowns and didn't play well before that either. I give him a lot of grace for the first interception that hit Grand Du Bois right in the body. And I'm probably willing to throw some blame in the way of Robbie Chozen slipping at the top of the route on the second interception, but generally speaking, did not play well to a tongue of a lower before the injury. It's week two, it's a long season. And to drop the shoulder on a defender with the history that you have as the quarterback is just a bummer because it's an avoidable situation. Didn't have to play out like that. And unfortunately it did, and it's the sobering reminder of the history that toa was trying to put behind him and the dolphins were trying to put behind them as they worked towards a more stable future together. And now I don't know, you know? And there's a lot of questions. Obviously the most important thing is to autonomous health. Football is secondary, but this was someone who alluded to the idea of retirement at one point in 2022. And now another concussion that frankly seemed like a fairly innocent hit, but that's the part of it that really jolts you, I think. Is he drops the shoulder and takes a blow to the head in the process. And is quickly ruled out. From a football perspective, this could not be worse for Miami, you know, Toronto Armstead suffers a shoulder injury, Jeff Wilson suffers an oblique injury to a tongue of a lowest, suffers a concussion. Obviously you have a short week or a short week to play this game. This is the second time two has had a concussion on a short week against an AFC contender. I don't think it would be responsible to expect to see him in a short-term window. What that window looks like, who knows? I know the team was exceptionally deliberate with the amount of time they took with him in 2022 when he suffered the concussion against Green Bay. This is the ultimate wrench in the grand plan. And now is not the time to say, I told you so, or could have seen this come in, or look back at the decision to pay the, like, obviously hindsight's always 20, 20, but two ahead earned the right to have a contract. And I think that's the frustrating thing, was the way that this injury happened, didn't have to happen. It was avoidable. And I get you're trying to make a play, never mind you're two yards past the first down marker. When you take the hit, get it, you're trying to energize your guys, but, you know, football is a physical game. And as the franchise quarterback, who has the kind of injury history that you have, this is a very difficult reminder of the restrictions that are on you as a player. - Game time makes getting to the ballpark even faster and easier. The Buffalo Bills defeated the Miami Dolphins 31 to 10 and improved to 2 and 0 on the season. Everybody eats. That's the mindset of the Buffalo Bills on offense. But what we didn't know is that it also applies to the defense. Guys stepping up all over the place on this defense. Guys, you didn't expect to have to fill such important roles coming through in a big moment. Balen Specter, Dorian Williams, Ham Lewis, Jamarcus Ingram, DeMar Hamlin, Taylor Rap. With all due respect to those players, that's a pre-season defense from 2023 and 2022. On a short week on the road against a very unique offense, they get it done. Unbelievable. Matt Milano hurt. Taryn Johnson out. Torel Bernard goes down early in this game. The entire second level of your defense is not what you expect it to be, but you figure it out. Sean McDermott might know a thing or two about coaching defensive football and credits of Bobby Babbage as well. He's a coordinator. But this system of defensive development is just unbelievable. Shut this Miami Dolphins offense down. 10 points. And so we're going to talk about this game. It's our post-game reaction show. Thanks for being here, everybody. Our first victory Friday of the season, as Josh Allen now improves to 7-0 on Thursday games. Mr. Thursday there, Josh Allen. We'll talk about things I liked, the very few things I didn't like, recap my predictions and talk about what's next year on this episode. And so I want to start this one with things I liked. And of course, I've kind of already gotten into it. It's the defense. It's everybody eats. It's the guys stepping up, unexpected players, not high-profile guys at all. Dept players, guys that have been in the system, they're ready to play, they're ready to play. And the big plays on defense were so huge. Big plays on defense, splash plays all over the place. Started on the opening drive. Miami's facing a third and 13. And Tua throws one down the field. And I'm not exactly sure if Christian Benford had a pass break up on the play, but the ball gets knocked up in the air. Jamarka Singrum intercepts the ball. Six plays later, the bill scored a touchdown. Josh Allen to James Cook. Great play call. Miami had been crowding the middle of the field on those early plays. The bills give them a tight formation. I talked about tight formations and bunches. They give them a tight formation. They get the rub. James Cook's wide open in the flats. Touchdown on fourth and three. Tell me more about how Sean McDermott's not aggressive. Seven to seven, late in the first quarter, first and 10. Tua's looking for Robbie chosen to his right. They're not on the same page. Tua sells the throw. Christian Benford picks it off. Bills get a field goal. They go up 10 to seven. 17 to seven, four, 30 left in the second quarter. Third and one, middle of the field, right? Actually, the dolphins cross midfield. Third and one, Ed Oliver, tackle for loss. Miami goes forward on fourth and two, Ed Oliver, sack. People ask me where Ed Oliver's at. And you know what the next play was? James Cook's 49 yard touchdown. And when he broke the second level and it was just him against Jordan Boyer, you knew. You knew that Jordan Boyer didn't have the legs to get the angle on James Cook, 49 yard touchdown. 934 left in the third quarter, third and five. A.G. Epinesse gets pressure on Tua. Tua's trying to throw it away. He can't get enough juice on the ball. And Jamarcus Singrum records his second interception of the game, this time a pick six. Bills win 31 to 10. Miami scores three points after the first quarter. Completely shut out in the second half. Doing so with quite the cast of characters playing linebacker in safety. How about Rasul Douglas and Christian Benford? That is one studly pair of outside corners. They aren't giving up anything, are they? I mean, these guys are unbelievable. It's not just a coverage. These guys are making tackles. These guys are physical. Tyree Hill, Jalen Waddle. Very expensive wide receiver core there for the Miami Dolphins. They combined for 65 yards in this game. That's the lowest total since Tyree Hill joined the Dolphins. Those guys are good. And so yeah, there's a lot of unexpected heroes that slot corner and linebacker in safety. That outside pair, Benford and Douglas. These guys can play. Big time players. How about Von Miller? Back to back really good games. They all 22 looked good for him against Arizona. He parlayed that into a heck of a performance against the Miami Dolphins. Really took Austin Jackson to school the Dolphins starting right tackle. These stats courtesy of next gen stats. Von Miller generated all four pressures in a sack. On 14 pass rush matchups against Dolphins right tackle Austin Jackson. Every one of his pressures got to the quarterback in under two and a half seconds. Miller's 2.10 second average time to pressure is his fastest in the game since 2021. Von Miller being a net positive to this football team. So far this season is a huge development, huge. And it didn't look good last year, folks. But further removed from that injury and for what Von Miller is at age 35, you could not be more satisfied to this point in 2024. Playing good ball, turning tight quarters, having a good get off, showing pass rush variety. He looks good. And so you saw him step up tonight at Oliver. Some good pressures from the other players, but all in all, this was a collective team defensive effort. 10 tackles for loss, three interceptions. You have 13 big time splash plays. Miami had 75 snaps. And a lot of those are fourth quarter games out of reach. There's a high percentage of those snaps through the first three quarters of this game, particularly when this game had, you know, it was more of a up for grabs type game where the Bills defense just kept making plays. Really impressive stuff from Bobby Babbitts and Sean McDermott. And most importantly, these players that were ready to go, that got themselves ready to go on a short week and went out there and just made a big time impact. Can they surprise us in week two in a good way? You are locked on bengals. Your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast. There will obviously need to be some adjustments for this team to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in week two. Going from the biggest favorites in the NFL in week one to five and a half point dogs, at least last time I looked, on the road in Kansas City to face the nemesis of rival. One of the teams that they have a reputation of being the Kryptonite for, but this game feels to me to have a very different vibe around it than previous games between these teams in the last three years. Yeah, it does. And I was literally just talking to someone about this. And not a player to be clear, but someone. And it's like, man, what? This is bengals chiefs. This has been the best rivalry in the NFL. Burrow Mahomes over the past couple of years. But for the second straight matchup last year, because Burrow was out this year, because of an underwhelming week one performance, it just doesn't have the juice leading into it, right? Cam Taylor Britt says, Zadra Worthy's a fast guy and you got to get hands on him at the line. People tried to blow that up, but I don't think it got the reaction that some of these comments have in the past. Some heated rivalry comments that we've seen from both sides. And that's what I think is interesting, because I get it. People are down on the bengals right now, but I can confidently say and be shocked if they aren't, much, much better this week. I expect them to look like a football team this week. I expect them to handle all out of the basic things that they should have could have handled in week one. And if they do that, then there's no reason why they can't make this a game, which is kind of a silly standard for this team, right? You have Jamaar Chase, who like an hour ago, he was talking in the bengals locker room, he says, "Yeah, we're the team to beat an AFC, and we need to act like it." Like, that's their mindset, but outside the building we're wondering, even though I'm currently stuck at Pay Corps Stadium, wondering like, "All right, well, are they going to be able to go to Kansas City and compete?" Which hasn't been the standard for the past couple of years when these two quarterbacks, these two teams have linked up Burrow in my homes. I'm not a single person that I saw doing game previews on Thursday before we recorded this episode. James took the bengals in this game. There was pretty unanimous. We're taking the Chiefs. I think the NFL.com picks had one. One of their people picking the Cincinnati Bengals in this game. But if you enumerate the things that went wrong for the bengals that need to go right in week two, that doesn't begin to scratch the surface of what they'll need to do to win in week two. The basics that you're talking about, tackling on defense when they're in position to make a play, that's the first thing, right? The second thing, or maybe that's the second thing, and the first thing is, Joe Burrow playing more like the Joe Burrow we're used to, diagnosing the way that we're used to him, processing the way we're used to him, processing, and making good decisions with the football instead of being sped up, dropping his eyes, dropping his throwing posture. That's definitely number one. I put those out of order. Number two, definitely tackling to me. But also in this mix is an element they didn't have in week one, which is now they have to defend the pass against a really good passer, against some skilled guys that are pretty good in Travis Kelsey, Rishi, Rice, and Xavier Worthy. Whatever Camp Taylor Britt says about Xavier Worthy, he is still a threat you have to account for, because he's shown the ability to do things with the ball at his hands, play up to that speed, and track the ball well downfield. So, yes, maybe you can disrupt him with a good jam, but you still got to get that jam on him. So you got to deal with him, and the Bengals largely weren't really challenged in the passing game last week. They just couldn't tackle on the running game, and we mentioned this in the crossover yesterday, if the Chiefs were able to run the ball for six, seven yards of carry with their much, much, much better interior offensive line, and maybe there's a similar level of tackle play, I'm not too bullish on the Kansas City tackles, although Kingsley Swamate is future. I am excited to see eventually, if they can run the ball, well, then you're back in the same situation, you're in in week one, and the other thing, James, this is my hot take for you that I got. I think those things are all pretty- - Jake, Jake with the hot take, Jake's take. All right, let's go. I think that a lot of people are concerned about the deep stuff, and I'm not trying to minimize that, and a lot of people are concerned about play calling, and people know that if you've listened to this show in the past, I have been one of the people that's like, I don't think play calling was actually an issue. I do think it was an issue in week one. I do think that too often, they did not set up yard after catch opportunities, and they did not challenge middle-of-field defenders and cover two with high-low reads or stress those defenders and make them have to be broad. So along those lines, this is the biggest disparity in the NFL in yards after catch teams in week one. The Chiefs were among the best, if not the best yards after catch team in week one, I think they averaged like 10 yards after catch per catch. The Bengals, if you throw out Zach Moss's screen, we're like two yards after catch. And in this NFL right now, I am more concerned about the Bengals setting up effective yard after catch opportunities and capitalizing on yards after catch in a world where the average depth of target keeps going down and down and down, then I am worried about the deep ball. Because I think those deep ball opportunities will naturally come along given the way they're constructed. I am not as convinced that without significant effort to discover yard after catch opportunities in this offense, that they will figure that out. And that's why if they're gonna keep doing this stuff, they're doing, I want them to find more yards after catch more than I'm worried about the deep ball. - Yeah, yak over deep ball. That's Jake's take. I like it. And in fact, I practiced today. It's weird 'cause you're super far away from me. We didn't really message before the show. I practiced today. I was like, yeah, they gotta hint on the intermediate stuff and turn that into explosive stuff. It's really easy to say, all right, we'll put Jamar here and send him down field or put Jermaine Burton here who we can get to and send him down field. And I know some people feel that way. But how many of their guys can win between 10 and 20 yards and then make a guy miss? And that's what they need. They need some guys that do that. So I agree with you. The Chiefs aren't going to, the game plan for them is gonna be, yeah, keep everything in front of you. Just like the Patriots, keep everything in front of you, come up, make the tackle, be disciplined, get pressure on Joe. Like it, every team is going to have that plan until you hurt them in a different way. And so, yeah, middle of the field, Yak is huge on anything. Short passes, Yak, middle of the field, intermediate. But when I look at last week, we've talked a lot about the deep ball. Can you just get some intermediate stuff going? Because I think that alone, we'll turn into a few more explosive plays and you're right. I mean, the Patriots, they just came up and made the tackle. It was like a magnet. There's like there's some kind of magnet gravitational pool that was pulling the Patriots defenders into whatever Bengal had the ball. Maybe there was a magnet in the football. Investigate the Patriots. No, but you get my point. I mean, they had zero Yak. I mean, it was wild when you really think about it. And that's why I do like that the Bengals, the vibes this week, they haven't panicked. Because I think they know that things can be corrected. And I agree with you. Because Yak could be an explosive plays. Air yards are irrelevant. Malik neighbors, let's talk about him. His appearing on the injury report today, today being Thursday was a bit of a surprise and also a bit of an alarm for some people. Because the last thing you want is you want to see the team's number one receiver on the injury report this soon or if at all. So Malik neighbors, just to kind of fill you in, he showed up on the injury report. He was seeing limping around or walking very gingerly, I should say, in the locker room. And there was some question as to what was going on with him. She did his regular media session, but after that, you know, just was just off and limping, I guess, to the back to get treatment. From what I understand happened, during practice, he tightened up in the knee area. And he reported it to a trainer and because he is such a valuable asset, rather than let him, you know, continue practicing, they pulled him out. And they said, they're like, we're not taking any chances, we're gonna pull him out, get him treatment and make sure that there's nothing brewing that's gonna escalate into something to where he can't play. So that's pretty much what happened on the practice field, from what I understand. Now, from what I also understand, whatever it is he has, is not serious enough to warrant a trip for diagnostic testing, right? They believe it's just tightness in the area. You know, behind the knee, you have, you know, the bottom of the hamstring, you've got other ligaments and stuff. So I don't know exactly where the issue was. They said knee, which could be, you know, any kind of ligament or whatnot. I know there are times when I wake up in the morning, if it's like a damp morning or something like that, my knees hurt until I get them going, you know? So it happens. What I'm getting at here is that I do not believe Malik neighbors is in danger of missing the game on Sunday. I would not be surprised if he continues to be limited on Friday's practice, just as a precaution. But I do think he will be ready for Sunday's game. I'd be stunned if he misses it. But right now what I'm trying to get across is his ailment, whatever it is, is not something that they seem overly concerned with. They're just playing it cautiously with him as they should and as you would expect them to. So a little bit of good news, I think, considering, you know, how frazzled everybody's nerves are from what happened last week. Malik neighbors, you know, looking forward to playing against Jaden Daniels, even though they're not going to line up, you know, across the field from each other and looking forward, you know, his team versus Daniels's team. You know, so I'm not worried about it right now. Now, if something changes, obviously, I will update you on it, but the general feeling based on what information I've been able to gather, nothing to worry about. Terms and conditions apply. Arizona and Kansas State, that's the headline this week in the Big 12. You're talking ball with the Big 12 squad. Can we all agree, Cody Stovall, that a win against Tulane on the road is better than a win at home against four and eight Arkansas. Everybody, are we all right there? No. I hope you got the reaction that you-- Really? Really? Willy for degrees. Willy for degrees so we agree. Transitive property, that's good for us. Cody Stovall, what makes you think that Oklahoma State's home win, giving up 600 yards, is better than Kansas State's road win against Tulane? Well, I mean, whenever you look at Tulane, they are a completely different team. Last year, they had 17 American conference, you know, all conference performers. They only-- they lost 11 of those individuals. Whenever you factor in Willie Fritz, that means exactly 70.588% of their returning production is gone. I understand that the coach came over from Troy, is a really good coach, and I also understand that they've returned their starting running back. But outside of that, they lose over 300 starts, whenever you could talk about the eight guys that are draft eligible that ended up in some semblance of an NFL roster. Those guys alone are 278 starts, before you take into consideration the three guys that left Tulane with Willie Fritz and the defense coordinator for Houston. How am I doing, Drake? Can I-- can I-- just-- just here. That is all about a team that you didn't play this week. Thank you. You guys are less tired-- I'm so sorry you didn't love the answer, but I was ready, buddy. Death, taxes, and Mike Gundy. And he can shop for bargain basement linebackers. And you know, he'll just ask him because he will tell you. This might be a cop-out, but like, what if Tulane just gets housed by Oklahoma this week? Like, would-- how would that make us look both at Houston? How would that make us look-- Wait a second. Is that Derek Johnson of lucked on J-Hawks? Derek, you still alive? Yeah, we don't know what dimension was happening again. Drake, why didn't you warn me about Jeff Grimes? Oh, dude, I can't-- is that-- what is the problem? Can somebody tell me the problem with Kansas, please? Hey, yeah, I mean-- Jake loves Jeff Grimes. Hey, Jeff Grimes is a legend in Provo. You don't have to know. Well, OK, so you get into the game. And Kansas averaged 5.6, 5.7 yards per carry against Illinois. They held Illinois to 2.2 yards per carry. That's a Brett Beelahma team. They held-- that was the lowest yardage shuttle that Lance Leipold team at Kansas has given up to a power four opponent. What was the deal? It was Jalen Daniels through three picks, and Jeff Grimes wanted to go deep or throw screen passes every play and not run the football. They averaged 4.4 yards per pass. Over 5 and 1/2 yards per carry. It doesn't take a mathematician to know what you should be doing more. And they refuse to rely on the run in that game. So it could just be a weird loss we look back on in a few weeks and are like, yeah, that was just an odd one. Or it might be a sign that, like, maybe Andrew Kodonicki was pulling more than we might have thought for the offense and the quarterback play. I don't know. But if you've done the Jeff Grimes, this is a guy who ran the ball like 80% of the time and pro, but I don't know what you guys did to him. So I got to be ready for UNLV. That's all I got to say. Ready for UNLV. Am I why girl wasted? Or was that the worst performance ever by Jalen Daniels in a KU uniform? Like, he just looked like a completely different player. He looked lost. He looked confused. He couldn't get his platform set right. He was throwing against his body all day. It just seemed like he was very out of sorts from the very get go. No, I agree. And that's been the conversation. You know, like, nobody knows. It's like, have all the injuries added up? Is it that he hasn't played in a while? He's shaking off rust? Is it a Jeff Grimes thing? I don't entirely know. And that's what's scary because it's like, if Jalen Daniels isn't the guy that you think he is, this offense is going to be very different. The season is going to be very different. And that's why this week, I mean, UNLV is a good opponent. KU beat him in the bowl game. I don't know if that helps or hurts you here in this go around. But it's one of those where it's like, if KU doesn't perform against UNLV, all of a sudden fans are going to start changing their expectations to just, can you just make a third straight bowl game versus, if Jalen does look like the guy we've seen on the bigger sample size, maybe it's back to like, okay, new season, big 12 play. You know, Texas was tied with Wyoming in the fourth quarter. The Oklahoma State, South Alabama game. K State lost it to Lane a couple of years ago when they won the big 12. It'll just be, you know, whatever, it's just a weird loss early in the season. - Yeah, I was like, they were all going to agree that UNLV is a very, very, very good opponent. We're all going to believe that. (laughing) - Yeah, I do want to pitch it. (indistinct) Yeah, was the Kelly Leipold thing real? For those who need a context here, apparently the Kansas coaches wife tweeted that she wanted more fan support. Derek, to our local expert, Derek. - Yeah, actually nobody knows. I actually gotten texts from people like in the media who have literally been like, "Should we like FOIA request Twitter? "How is that going to go?" But I don't know, it probably just gets shut down. - I was going to let Kevin Borba talk about Colorado this week, but Deon called me and said, "Don't let anybody speak on our football team. "Whatsoever, we are going to do things our own way." And nobody gets to have an opinion period, except for it. - Let the band play Deon, let the band play. - What do you play? Can we play the rap song first and then let the band talk? Maybe. (laughing) I could give you the full breakdown of what's called, they released a statement because that's how dramatic it was. - No. - They go, "Should door sander snip it "of perfect timing, which is the song? "If you like it or not, it's not one of my favorite rap songs." And then it goes, "Glory Colorado." And then they kick the field goal. And then they play the fight song is what their statement said. Now granted, no one was paying attention because I didn't realize that mean people cared about a song after a game. But when the New York Mets did it, no one cared 'cause they have that guy with-- - They don't have a fight song, they don't have the band. You've got a whole, they've got 17-year-old singing the stands waiting to play the tuba 'cause their team scored when they do score that. - The Mets have a guy with a trumpet. I mean, how do they think they are with a trumpet? - I mean, the students wanted it's perfect time. I don't know. I feel like Colorado has a lot more to worry about than what song they're playing after touchdowns because against Nebraska, they didn't-- - The fight song! - The fight song, it's pretty clear. Do you have a bottle of bourbon, you keep like a Bob Euchar and Nathan Leake, like you touch before every show? - I need one talking to you because we're talking about a fight on when Colorado just got absolutely embarrassed by Nebraska team they boat race last year. And all they did differently was add a freshman quarterback. - Hey, real quick, can we just talk about crazy? Is that Utah beat a big 12 team and it doesn't count for absolutely anything this weekend? - Utah beat a glorified midmate. We can all agree that Tulane is better than Baylor. Tulane is better than Baylor. - Yeah, Tulane is better than Baylor. - Yeah, you understand. - JT, your point of view is really good. - Probably the game of the week in the big 12 this week and with Arizona and K-State, that doesn't count either. Like what's up with it? - I know, it's so weird. - And it hurts the league because-- - It hurts the league, yeah. - Yeah, absolutely. - I think you're-- - Especially in a midweek game, like I just, I would much rather that game beyond a Saturday where it could be the center spotlight and it's not only a weekday game, but like you also said, it doesn't count for anything in the conference standing, which feels like a real missed opportunity. I know the scheduling made it challenging, but it feels like a rare point where Brett Ewellmark didn't miss the mark to me. - Well, this was effectively Utah's easiest game on the schedule. So if I was you, I would not complain. If I was Arizona or Kansas-- - Their easiest game. - One of those two teams is going to be effectively eliminated from at large in the college football. - We still get to play, we still get to play Houston. No offense, Parker. - Sorry, Parker. Which team? - Houston Baylor. - Hey, hey. - I thought he was the Baylor. - Again, you know these are very good team. You know these are very good team. - You know these are very good team. - Great, I don't want it to rail, but real quick, I wanted to ask Kevin, can you explain the shooter walking off the field with like two and a half minutes left thing before I unload on Colorado on my show? - Can you tell me, I've never, I don't know, that was weird. - Yeah, there's a lot of things to unload about on Shador Sanders, how he answered that question after the game about the rushing attack. Didn't love that. I feel like if you wanna unload, that'd be the thing. What I wanna unload on is him walking off the field. He wasn't the only player. Him and another guy who are injured, we're both walking off the field to go get checked out in the locker room, what we were told. So there was a lot of things to do with, I think a selective picture is probably not the one. I just don't think outside of Parker, most people don't know who Chinoza is walking off the field. So he also was walking off the field, but they were going through the locker room. But yeah, there's a lot of things to be outraged about. The bands, what song they're playing, get a hatred for CBS, I don't, I get a-- - There's a lot of, I would avoid that one though. That's like the least of my concerns. - Let's stay right there though. Coming up, Colorado gets Colorado State this week, and I picked the Rams, they're the Rams, right? They're so irrelevant. I don't know if I know the other Rams. - I picked the Rams to win. - Game time makes getting to the ballpark even faster and easier. Do not tell my boss about this hat. It's already a huge deal with this fan base. But dude, we're talking about this game. I think that I've been saying this since the summer. I feel like if you ask each fan base, it's two totally different levels of confidence. And you want, I want to say, rational belief of what you think you're going to see on Saturday. From the LSU perspective, what are you expecting Saturday and Williams Bryce? - Yeah, I mean, I think LSU is going to throw the ball a lot. I don't think they're going to run it very well. And I think their defense is going to be pretty mediocre because that's kind of what LSU has been for two weeks. They threw it really well against Southern Cal and they got in the red zone and didn't get touchdowns. They threw it really well against Nichols. They didn't run it or the flip against Southern Cal. They didn't run it or the flip against Nichols. And the defense, while there were some signs that things were a little bit better in the USC game, they still gave up over 400 yards and lost the game. So I think LSU kind of has an identity right now. And until I see differently, that's kind of what I expect. - Yeah, I mean, I think that's fair. I think one of the things that's the weirdest part of the identity is still kind of like the lack of identity and understanding of where Harold Perkins is going to fit best in this defense. And here's the thing. - You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of like when I'm making a graphics or something and I'm like, okay, I get to this deep dive where I'm like, I'm going to move like 87 things, like a quarter of an inch one way and be like, hey, what do you think looks best? Like I don't know, just go back to what it was. Like this looks the exact same, but it's also not as good. Like what happened to two years ago when this guy was the best defensive player in the whole country and all of a sudden it's like, well, what if we just tinker around with it? Like what do you expect to see from him and where is he going to line up on the field? - So I don't know exactly where he's going to line up. The scuttle butt here in Baton Rouge is that he's going to move out to the star position that Major Burns has been manning. It's a safety, but the kind of he plays in the box and you're around the line of scrimmage a lot more. You can blitz from there, you're asked to cover a little bit from there. It's more of a linebacker look than a safety look. I think that's probably where he's going to spend a lot of time. His best ability is his ability to rush the passer and then use his athleticism as a spy. However, he's six feet tall and 220 pounds and if he goes to Sundays, you can't line up on the line of scrimmage. It's six feet tall and 220 pounds and deal with those offensive tackles, snap and snap out about each you alive. So there had to be some development of his game back a level at linebacker just for draft purposes, but it has made him a less impactful player at the college level. And there have been games where he's kind of been MIA. There have been games where he was schemed out of the game. Mike Norvell just got him completely out of the game last year before to stay in the opener. So this is not something they just figured out this week. Like we need to probably think about this. They've thought about this since Flakemaker showed up in January. It's just not working out right now. - Yeah. I think that he's obviously one of the bigger names, Nussfire, obviously. I've been talking about the Nussfire and Curran Lacey combo because that's really been the offensive times. And as bad as LSU has been at running the football, Nussfire has got eight touchdowns like on the season including six against Sickles. Give me some names offensively and defensively, maybe outside of those three we just mentioned that should have an impact on this game Saturday specifically. - Yeah, I don't think Chris Hilton's gonna play. He was supposed to be the number two wide receiver and he's been dealing with a bone bruise that kept him out the last two weeks of camp. And it's still just not quite there yet. He hasn't really been able to practice. So I don't think you're going to see him. Probably and right now, Cal Parker is kind of banged up as well when he was filling in for Hilton. He's got a UCL injury in his elbow. So right now at wide receiver, you're gonna see a lot of Aaron Anderson who is really, really quick. He's short and shifty, slot guy that get in the ball on some screen action and whatnot. You're gonna see Xavier and Thomas who's a great kick returner and punt returner, but they're asking him to do a little bit more in terms of wide receiver now because those two guys are out. So those are probably the two biggest options as far as wide receiver. But I think Mason Taylor is a huge piece of what else he tries to do at tight end. He's big, he runs pretty well. He catches everything and that's why I like to go to him. So I think you're gonna see a lot of Mason Taylor on Saturday. - Yeah, it'll be interesting because like you've seen LSU teams in the past, like you're fine with throwing the ball. However, many times you need to throw the ball because you do it so well, do it so efficiently and effectively. But in 70% chance of rain, like it's just, it's bad weather everywhere. I don't know if that's gonna still be the game plan. Defensively, what are y'all expecting to see if South Carolina, 'cause I'll tell you right now, for somebody that's been covering South Carolina, it's not been great offensively. They have done well I think the Kentucky game was awesome. If we're being honest, I think it kind of masked some of the issues that South Carolina's had offensively, but like, what are you expecting to face against this offense going into the Saturday? - Well, I don't know if LSU has a single SEC quality defensive tackle on the entire roster right now. - Right. - I don't know if they have one. Geopias is gonna start. He was a defensive end at Wisconsin that didn't start a ton while he was there. And now he's shifted inside to tackle. The Paris Chand has played a little bit of tackle, but he's really a defensive end. I don't know if they're gonna kick him down there. Sean Washington's a Juco prospect. Jalen Lee's been a backup at Florida and LSU and hasn't really played in four years. Then you got Ahmaud Bro and Don McKinley, who were true freshman, who you would really prefer not to put huge snap blows on. Like, I don't know what they've got a defensive tackle. It's not good. And so they're gonna probably have to deal with numbers in the box. I do think the linebackers are pretty good. Greg Penn's a pretty good player. Whit Weeks is a really good player and Perkins will play some linebacker as well. And they're good on the end. Savion Jones is a really good player and I think they can rush the passer. But as far as the run game goes, like that's a big question market defensive tackle because they couldn't really address it in the portal and then their best one got hurt for the season. - All right, Hunt, before you have to get out of here and go edit another one of my 15,000 word, what do you call them, articles with a ton of grammatical errors in them. And I appreciate you for it. You got a doozy that's in your inbox right now, just the heads up. - I want to look at it. - Okay, that's very fair. But anyway, give me a prediction of score prediction for the game and yeah, man, we'll just blow up the circle back whether it's right or wrong. - Yeah, you know, I think all she's gonna win the game. If I let you doesn't win the game, they're in big, big, big trouble. All your preseason goals are pretty much out the window and you've got some real soul searching to do. I think they'll throw it well enough and I don't know that South Carolina can keep up throwing it that way. We'll see what the weather has to do, but that's kind of a chance deal. I think you'll let she wins at somewhere in the neighborhood of 28, 24. I do think it's gonna be a close game and a really, really good environment. So we'll see. I think it's a last drive type game. - Sounds good, man. I appreciate you coming on and all the other work you do over at 1 on 4 5 ESPN. Tell everyone where they can find you and find us, mainly you, though. I don't need them coming after me on two different platforms. - Yeah, you can find us at LouisianaSports.net.
