[MUSIC] Hello again, friends. It is a great football Saturday morning as we welcome you to the Southern Fairways Sports Radio Show. Present a by McConnell Automotive, the number one GMC dealer in the state of Alabama. They're located in Mobile, just east of I-65 on Dolphin Street, or you can check them out online at McConnellautomotive.com. We're broadcasting live from our Strixon Studios right here in Lower Alabama. As I am your host, Randy Bergen. And guys, let's just remember and say a prayer for all the folks that have suffered through Hurricane Helene. They certainly, certainly need our support and our prayers, and if you can help, please do. One of the ones that I use was the Samaritan Purse. And that's Billy Graham's deal, and I will tell you if you can use that and help support them. They certainly need it for sure. All right, joining me in our studio today. He's one of our partners, one of the proprietors of Butro's Cajun Grill right here in Daphne. We call him The Voice, Mr. Matt Brand. Matt, how are you doing, my brother? Outstanding, my friend. Glad to be here. As always on another football Saturday, so looking forward to the games today. A lot of SEC matchups. I want to mirror what you said to those folks up in North Carolina, Tennessee. I've got some family up there that luckily we're not in the middle of all of it. They're more on the eastern or the western side, but they have done their part to go out there and help what they can. So that's a great man. That's a mess. It's a mess. And I mean, you know, again, we're not going to try to get political on this, but it doesn't look like the government's helping them quite as much as they could. Hopefully they will. Hopefully it'll all kind of get fixed. But, man, those guys really, really need our help. Second worst hurricane, I think, in the history of these United States. So... That's devastating. Very devastating. Very devastating. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers for sure. Hey, we got a great show lined up for you today. Coming up in our next segment. We'll have an opportunity to talk with a good friend of ours, Lou Vickery. Now, he's the author of 23 Books, former professional baseball player. He's in the Cardinal and Yankee organizations for many years. He's a motivational speaker and a broadcaster. You will not want to miss that segment. I can promise you he's a pretty funny dude and we'll, you'll find that out here in just a little bit. At the bottom of the hour, two times, all SEC Center at the University of Alabama. Mr. Fu Manchu, big number 66, our good buddy Roger Schultz is going to be on with us. We'll talk some Bama football, Auburn football, SEC football with Roger and you won't want to miss that segment as well. And then we'll wrap up setting up the games for you in, for today's college football games all around the area. We'll check the leaderboards in golf and we'll talk some food as well. But we left the door open, Matt. And there he is. PGA Teacher Professional, standing ovation by. Absolutely everybody stay as for for him and he is the director of golf at Quercary, golf loaded, beautiful Fairhill, Alabama. You don't even sweet swinging Bobby. How are you doing, man? I'm doing great. So I'm a little late and there's a lot of traffic out here. This Eastern tour is growing so fast. So you know that at your restaurant, filling up and everything. But good to be here. It's a beautiful day. Understand we might even get to 54 degrees later on. Oh really? Yeah. Nice. Glad to be here. The weather's nice. Get outside and enjoy it. Hey, we had some nice weather last week. We had the opportunity to, we went west of the west coast and we were watching that Alabama Georgia game. While you were watching it at 6.30, we were watching it at 1.30. And we just got through playing golf at a interesting track. Would you say, Bobby? Yes it was. What was it? Maui Kua Golf Club. Yeah, and the front side was a little wet, but the views when you get there just kind of, it doesn't matter what the course conditions is beautiful. On the back side was great. We had a good time. It was a great trip. Thank you for inviting me. I've never been to Hawaii, but it was fun. We had a great trip. We played a couple of different golf courses. One that I absolutely loved was the King Kamehameha Golf Club and absolutely beautiful. But the winds were 25 to 35 miles an hour. And it really made for some interesting golf. But you know, sometimes you get frustrated in that kind of stuff. The body, I think we all kind of kept our cool and had fun with it. We had fun with it. Just great views. Seeing Maui down in the head. We went around and saw Kapalua. But yes, the views from the golf course and man, the setting around the clubhouse had a waterfall to 18th green, a little creek there. Beautiful flowers. It was great. It was amazing how I've been to Hawaii once and got to visit my son when he was stationed out there with the Coast Guard. Now where was he at? He was in Honolulu. Okay. So he was out there. So different island. Yeah. So we, I mean, it's hard not to enjoy it more on your own vacation. Sure. But two, I mean, the air is cleaner, the crisper, the views are fantastic. I mean, you wake up and you almost have less stress because of where you're at and what you're looking at. It's a really incredible place. And I'd love to go back to visit. Living there might be a challenge. But visiting there is really fun. It would be a challenge. How would you get your work done? I don't know. I mean, I don't know. Okay, Bobby, we've got a few minutes left in this segment right here. We watched that Bama Georgia game. And I got to say, probably one of the best college games that I've seen in a long, long time. Alabama looks like their man. They're just going to kill Georgia in that first half, 33, 7, you go in a half time. And I think the final was what, 41, 34. But Georgia comes back and we're kind of all sitting on the edge of our seats in that second half if you're an Alabama fan. We were, of course, we had a beautiful view watching the game, which was great. But yeah, that come back by Georgia and the way Kirby Smart handled it after the game, I thought was pretty classy. But I think the bore is on the right track and hopefully today they'll push through again as they play Vanderbilt. Absolutely. You mentioned that, Kirby. He did handle that very good. Here's what he had to say. Well, obviously one hell of a game, great atmosphere, a lot of respect for Alabama's team, their fans, the venue, it was one hell of a game, a tale of two halves. Obviously we were not really prepared and that falls on me in the first half. We didn't do a great job, especially defensively, but we also gave them short fields. And with a short field and a quarterback like Millro, it creates a lot of tough times. I am extremely proud of our team at halftime. I thought our coaches made good adjustments. Everybody was positive. And I talked to them, I told them, I said, "Look guys, I've been in the stadium down to Texas A&M, probably just this bad," and came back to make it a game and had a chance to win the game and didn't make more plays than Alabama. So a lot of credit to them and for us, humility is always a week away. We've got to go get ready for another tough opponent coming to our place. Well, now I'll tell you, Auburn comes in today, I'm going to be honest with you, I feel sorry for Auburn today. I think Georgia is going to wear them out, not because of the struggles that Auburn has, but because Georgia is like, "We've got to show a little revenge or something here, man." Well, there's one thing you've seen out of Georgia the last couple of years, is that they have not always started out strong in the first half. And I think this was their downfall against Alabama. Obviously, if they'd played the second half, first half like the second half, it would have been a whole different game for Alabama. But lately, it seems like the Kirby gene has been just a little bit slow to get rolling. They come out in the second half and they play like a different team and that's what happened last weekend, but fortunately, Alabama was able to hang on. Yeah, no doubt. You know what he said, which is a credit to the coaching staff. They got in there, were staying positive, they made the adjustments and that's what you have to do if you're going to come out behind in the second half or any team. So, yeah, Georgia's in Texas, Alabama, going to be right there at the finish. Yep, and that will be one of the games that's played over and over again on SEC Network for years to come, because that was one heck of a guy. And I'll tell you, that Ryan Williams from Mobile, from Maryland, 17 years old, this kid is phenomenal. He is phenomenal. No doubt. As a matter of fact, we may try to get his dad on with us pretty soon. So, hey, you know, we found out this week too, we lost Pete Rose, Mr. Hustle, all right, at the age of 83 and Chris Christofferson, they both passed away Chris at 88 years old. And maybe we'll play a little bit of his music and some of our beds today kind of as a tribute to Chris Christofferson. He'll certainly be missed and I'm missing one of my favorites all time, of course, Willie Nelson, Wayland Jennings and Johnny Cash and the highway men, I'll miss that, them being together. Those songs for a long time to come. Well, you know what, just for you, Bobby, we're going to play that song for you. We'll have that coming up in just a little bit about that, all right? It's a good song. Didn't Chris Christofferson write that? I think so. Yeah, yeah. He wrote a lot of songs. Hey, got to say congrats to the U.S. President's team on the win over the International's last week. Did you watch any of that? Of course, the U.S., we watched it. We watched it. And that means, you know, the U.S. comes out, they want to just, I mean, moths up the floor with them, right? Then day two is like, "Uh-oh, what's happening here?" And it was a good match. Yeah, day four was really exciting with, you know, those, they could have flipped one way or the other been a little bit closer, so it was fun to watch. Yeah. Hey, Bobby, before we go in our time out real quick, 30 seconds, you got a tip for us? Oh, always have a tip for us. I was talking to Tim Gress at this morning in the pro shop. I said, "Renny's always going to ask for a tip." And one thing I love about Tim Gress at playing with Tim, he has a great personality about playing golf. He never really gets too upset. But Tim and his putting, one of the things that he likes to pass along, is learn to lag putt, especially when you get on these new courses with the TIFF Eagle Greens. You don't want to charge that putt sometimes, sometimes it'll get away from you, but the more you lag around the hole, he feels like gravity is going to help the ball if it gets close to the edge and help it fall in. But learn to lag putt, especially high school kids and junior high kids, stay away from the three putts, learn to lag that ball up close to the hole and then tap it in with that two or three foot putt. So lag putting is important. I was listening to one of the old PGA girls not too long ago when they were on tour. I think it was the ladies U.S. Open and the girl had come from Mississippi State University and she said, "I'm working real hard on my lag putting. Lag putt it around the hole. Tap that thing in and go on to the next one." There you go. There you go. Hey, look, we'll take a time out when we come back. You won't want to miss it. Blue Vickery is up next right here on Southern Fairway Sports Radio. And welcome back to Southern Fairway Sports Radio, Randy Berge glad that you are on board with us on a beautiful Saturday morning. Hey, I have got a guy on the line with us. Been a long time friend. This guy is the author of 23 books, former professional baseball player, played in the Cardinal and Yankee organization and a guy that is a motivational speaker goes all over the nation doing that. And I got to tell you, we did morning radio for many, many years, many, many years ago. My good friend, Lou Vickery on the line with us. Lou, how are you doing, my brother? Hey, Randy, thank you very much. I'm really honored to be with you. You have such a great show and I'm very honored to be a part of it. Well, I'll tell you, I know you're in Dothan right now. You're getting set. And guys, let me tell you, if you're a tennis player, this is not the guy you want to play with. It doesn't matter what his age is. He's a lefty. He will wear you out. He can put a spin on a tennis ball like you've never, ever seen before because I can remember a time that we went and played and as a matter of fact, I think we were. We were in Orlando whenever you said, hey, let's go to the courts and you beat me like an absolute drum. Yeah, but Randy, you remember, I was playing every day. You were just playing sporadically, so it's always a little different, you know. Well, it was a lot of fun. You know, Randy, I really enjoyed the game, but I enjoy being competitive and I've been able to play on the senior tour, three out of the lights, four years traveling and the only year I did was the year I had COVID. I think we shared that time together. Almost lost my life. I was in the hospital for 22 days and had double pneumonia, not a great way to spend your time. I can assure you, actually from that experience, I only remember a couple of days and so yeah, I'm just thankful to Lord, so a way for me to be here and I'm really tempted to make the best of it. And I'm in my third book for this year alone, so I'm working at it. And I want to talk about, I want to talk about some of the books, obviously the one that you're into right now because you sent me some excerpts of it and it is going to be absolutely one of my favorite books, no doubt about it. By the way, let me just mention it, it's called Sonny and it's the biography, I guess you will, of Sonny Smith, the great Auburn basketball coach and dude, you know, you introduced me to him over 20 years ago and he's been on the show many times and one of the funniest guys, if you remember when we were doing morning radio, he would come on just about once a week and he always ended his interview with a joke and I'm telling you, the guy can tell a joke. Well, you know, the Denver Post said he was the most entertaining coach they'd ever heard, so, I guess, but you're right, he could tell and he still can, you know, we, he and I also had an opportunity to speak in Auburn not long ago and Sonny's always got a great story. And so we're going to tell a lot of the stories in the book and it's, it's going to be a great read, he had a very unusual career and really, real quickly, Sonny grew up in a home without electricity and running water in a little town called Row Mountain, Tennessee and it's, he never shared much about his early childhood, but in this book, he does and I think it's going to be an opportunity to put people to really gain a much deeper understanding of coach Sonny Smith. Well, I don't think there's a question about that and I want to dive into that in just a few moments because what I've read is, is quite interesting and part of it was growing up with no electricity and running water, but let me, let me go back and talk a little baseball. You played, as I mentioned, in the Cardinal and Yankee organization, you had an opportunity to meet a fellow that just passed away this past week, the, a guy that a lot of folks think should be in the Hall of Fame, Pete Rose passes away. And I know you had a story you shared with me about Pete Rose. I want to get your thoughts about Pete and maybe be sure that story was, Randy, I, Pete Rose is a epitome of a guy that played two strengths. He was not a home run hitter and he didn't try to hit home runs. He would tell you real quickly, my job is to set the table. I lead off hitter to get on base and he didn't have really the kind of speed that you would expect for a lead off hitter and I would tell you, he wasn't an athletic kind of guy, but he understood his role and he'd lead the league and hit it five straight years. He'd lead the league and hit him and run score. So he was doing his job. He was getting on base and letting the guys behind him bring him around and drive him in. And, you know, he's all time leader for base hits. So my feeling is that Pete Rose should have been put in the Hall of Fame. He has not been. And I think in a way that's a shame. And I understand the gambling, gambling issue, but we're talking about playing the game of baseball. Well, I mean, I could reflect on in golf is Phil Mickelson in the Hall of Fame. You know, I mean, he's a big gambler as well, no, as well, but I agree. Mr. Hustle should be in there. He was the epitome of hustling on the baseball field and certainly a guy that when you stepped up to the plate where they'd be right handed or left handed, he was going to probably get a base hit. His base on base percentage was was very, you know, Randy, I would just I want to interject this because I did this in my talks all around the country and I talk about the fact that Pete Rose, you've asked him what your goals be. And he says, my goal is to get one point four hits again. And I know you can't get a percentage, but if you look at that, his overall goal was to get 200 hits this season. If he got 200 hits this season, he's got close to 100 runs. And that was that's the thing that I think made Pete Rose what he is. He knew his role and I said earlier, he knew his role and he played that role. Well, he certainly did. Tell us that story though, though of you and Pete, where you saw him last. Well, you know, well, Pete and I met and I co-sear since that organization that pitching coach, Rick Lee, pitching coach, but in spring training, I had a chance to go out and start training. And I got to change to meet Pete, and Pete loved to play the dogs. And I told him to look, I have to have a friend who's a former roommate behind the corn organization. His dad's a trainer at the track. And I know him well, so we might get a tip or two. So a tip or two we got, Randy, I made $1,000 in 1960, early '60s for one, but one spring. So I thought most of him was salary per year. Oh, that's good stuff. But Pete always, he enjoyed, he enjoyed getting it was something he did. And then he suffered the consequences as a result of it. Yeah, no doubt. We're visiting with Lou Vickrey, the author of 23 books, professional baseball player, coach, broadcaster as well. And Lou, we've got just a few more minutes here, but I do want to dive in and talk about some of the books that you've got out. A lot of these are all motivational books. Most of them are motivational. You got this one right now that you're working on called Sunny. And it's the story of Sonny Smith, the legendary Auburn basketball coach. One of the great guys, one of the funny guys out there, and he's been a friend of yours for a long, long time. Dive in a little deep on this. I know you shared a story or two with me that absolutely cracked me up that is part of this book. You know, Randy, real quick, I do want to mention, Coach Smith and I authored a previous book called "Win in the Head Game," Kita Athletic Success. It's done super well. In fact, we're in our third edition of that book and it will be released shortly. But he, one of the great stories was that Reggie Copeland, who was an SEC official, a great official of one later in after his fish ache career, was vice mayor of Mobile, Reggie's dear friend, and he was fish ache a game in Kentucky and Auburn was behind him. Coach Smith, you know, coached at Auburn and they're behind Kentucky by 30 points. And Sonny had seen enough and he was trying to get run out of the game. So he got one technical call on him and then he said you had to have two to get out of the game, right? So he talks to, he calls Reggie a few choice names and even question, he saw a heritage, his mother's heritage. And so Reggie didn't do anything. And at the time, he came over and he says, "Sonny, I know what you're trying to do. You're trying to get thrown out of this game, but you're going to have to sit here and watch it just like you're in trouble." So it didn't work. It did not work, it did not work. Let me tell you why I'm really excited, Randy. With this, the first time this has been attempted, as far as I know, is the book, I've mentioned the win-in-the-head game, Kita Athletic Success, is being converted into a learning program for young athletes. A training company called Learn.net has taken that book and produced over 300 questions about various things. You could be about your nutrition, you could be about attitude, it could be one of my favorites pressure tolerance. So it's a multiple choice and they send out to the participant each day a different question and they do that for a year. And Randy, I'm telling you, this is a great learning experience for young people and it's called Habit Builders, a win-in-the-head game Habit Builders. And let me give you if somebody would like to make a note. My email address is Lou, L-O-U, Vickery, V-I-C-K-E-R-Y, 824@gmail.com. That's where I receive my locations from people who have an interest in and I'll work. And so I'm really excited about what's going to happen here because it is a great tune for young athletes. Lou, it is. I looked at it, you sent it to me and I'm telling you, it's fabulous. For your parents out there, you want to make sure that you get this for your young athlete. Lou, our time is up. It's always fun to hang out with you. I hope that you'll come back on real soon. Hey, all you got to do is pull my chain, you know, and I'll find a way. I'll let everyone know if you need a good speaker, I will speak for food. Oh my goodness, we've had some fun times, no doubt. Lou, Vickery right there, Lou. Thank you, my brother. I'll talk to you soon. Thank you, Randy. It's always fun. All right, buddy. Lou, Vickery, Arthur of 23 books, former professional baseball player and much, much more. All right, we take a time out. When we come back, number 66 in your old Alabama program, Mr. Fu Manchu, two-time all SEC Center at the University of Alabama, Roger Schulze. He's up next right here on Southern Fairways Sports Radio. Hey, get her done, you know what this is, this is Larry the Cable Guy, and you know who you're listening to? That's right. Randy Burger on Southern Fairways Radio Show, and if you're not listening to him, you're a communist. Oh yeah, he did. That's a nice Atkins right there. Yeah, I was going to say that's not Chris Kristoff. No, no, I got that coming up for you just a little bit, all right, so you just ain't tight on that. We welcome you back to the Southern Fairways Sports Radio, efforting to get Roger on the line with us. Hopefully you'll be able to join us and know he's going to be a little busy this morning, but he said he would sort of carve out some time for us, so maybe we can have him up here in just a few moments. But hey, a lot going on in college football. Of course, Texas has the weekend off, so does Oklahoma because they'll be battling it next week, but you got Missouri and Texas A&M that will tee it up here right after our show on ABC at 11 a.m. Auburn goes to Georgia. That's a 2/3 game on ABC. What's your thoughts on that? Let me start with you, Matt. Well, I think Georgia's going to take what they did in the second half and find out what it made that in the first half of this game. I really think, you know, you kind of feel bad for Auburn a little bit because they're going to get the brunt of a really upset Georgia team from losing that game. And I think Kirby did a great job post game in the locker room if you guys got a chance to see what he talked about, how well he talked up, the good performers talked up, the fight, talked up, all the things that Georgia did well. He could have gone the other way, but he didn't. And I think that's what a good coach does, is bring them together when they're down and put them in the right direction. And we played that clip at the beginning of the show, and that's why he's been one of the top coaches for a long time. Hey, let's go to our Shrixion guest line and welcome in to time. All this, he's center, I'm calling Mr. Fu Manchu, big number 66, Roger Schultz on the line with us. Roger, how you doing, my man? Man, I do it outstanding. Are you kidding me? It's Saturday at football. What was two days in the 55 days in football? Come on, let's go. I'll get back. Hey, Roger. Come on. Good. Let's go. We're happy about that. We are glad that your yard looks good. Let's talk about this Alabama team. They look good. Man, what a ball game last week against Georgia. Unbelievable. I kept telling everybody before the game, my baby, what do you think is going to happen? We're going to beat them by double digits. We're going to beat them by double digits. You know, I just had a feeling. And of course, I was feeling really good at having them. Exactly. I'm like, dude, I am a genius. I'm starting to figure out how I can start my own podcast and how I can not to take games and all that. Lo and behold, Georgia fought back. But Alabama did, you know, Alabama back and of course you have a freshman that makes an unbelievable play. So, man, what a game though. But it shows a lot about Alabama. It shows that Taylor Moore's doing a good job and Alabama's got a really, really good team, right? But it also shows you that Georgia's got heart and fight and desire and they're not going to quit. And that's exactly what you want from a tent. You don't want a team to wilt and go away and they didn't and Carson Beck, who couldn't find anything in the first half, was on. And I tell everybody, everybody's like, wait, I said, you can't defend the perfect pass. You can't defend the perfect pass. And he threw a lot of, even though like someone were short, but he threw the ball. He also hit some guys right in hands as they dropped him. But he can't defend the perfect pass and he had a good game in the second half. But Alabama did what it had to do and it was a great event, man. I had an opportunity to go to the game and it was fun. It was a great event. Well, there you go. And I was at the last Alabama Georgia game for their CC Championship last year and that was a great game over in Atlanta. But something you said, Coach DeBore, and I'm going to ask you a question. You played back in the late 80s, early 90s. And you kind of went through this coaching change as well. I think you went through Shula, not did you just have one coaching change, but you had three. You had Shula, Curry, and Stolenz, if I remember correctly, what are these guys going through? You got to remember correctly, Shula was the quarterback when I played, but Perkins was the one. Oh, OK. That's what it was. Because you're old. You're old. Uh, no, no, but no, actually, you had, yeah, I know, I'm pulling your leg here. A little bit. But no, you did go through that Curry, Stolenz change and talk about what these guys are going through a little bit. I mean, this is, you bring in one of the top coaches to replace the goat. I mean, it's too bad to shape there. No, so it's interesting. So the cutting changes that I went through, I went through one when I was from a red shirt freshman, you know, to my freshman year. So I'm really not established, wasn't a guy, just a guy trying to make it right, trying to prove myself to somebody. So when Curry came in, that's what I was trying to do. But then when I go through the second change, I'm now a three-year starter. I've established myself, and now you've got a new coach coming in, Coach Stolenz, and you have to prove yourself all over again and all that. So it was kind of two different transitions at different times, right? It wasn't the same scope, um, and, but you got these guys making tracks. And I think, you know, when, when Sabin was on game day with the bore last week, he kind of said it. And I think it's kind of true. He just said they were tired of his, and I think they're right, I think it's Monday. And what happens, the board kind of brings in this pressure pro to how you play in music at practice. I think he's a little more of this generation's kind of coach, because these kids are different. I mean, now especially with NIL and I saw this, it's just so much. I mean, not only do you have to coach, you have to be a counselor, you have to be a shoulder to cry. You know, you just, you know, tough it up and spit on it. You know, you just had to, you know, be tough and rub dirt on it, or whatever. You know, these guys are sensitive, they're sensitive, you know, but yeah, it's a different quote. Well, it is. We're visiting Roger Schultz, uh, Roger and I know, uh, Matt's got a question for you, but real quick nowadays, and we were talking about this in the prep sports report because you see it in high school as well as almost where you're not developing or it's very difficult to develop these players, because if you get onto them and they don't like the way you talk to them, then they'll just get packed their bags and leave, or if they get $10 more from another school, they're going to leave. So it's a, it's a different, it's a different era in college football now from the time you played. Yeah. Yeah, it is. And then obviously it makes it hard, right? And if they coaches are changing and then you get teams like, well, you get Florida State, right? And lastly, that kind of threw all these guys in a bag, mixed it up and when I do it out on the table, it kind of worked. Well, it ain't working this year, right? It's somewhat, and that's even like at Auburn, you know, talk about Hugh Freeze and his transition and what he's trying to do and how he's coaching. I mean, I wouldn't give him, I mean, I would think he's probably about a D right now, uh, grade wise, but what he, but I get what he's trying to do too, he's like, hey, I'm trying to kind of fill in through the portal, but I really do need to be strong in high school recruiting. But high school recruiting is so, he could have, he could have 10, five star guys committed right now and then Tuesday, may all just change in two weeks. Right. I mean, it's a different, it's a different, you know, when guys just kind of commit, they kind of held, they didn't change as much as they do now, but, uh, but, you know, you got to have, you got to build it through high school, you got to build a foundation. Well, Rod, Roger, that's great to have you on as always. I got to ask you on this Auburn side, I got some family that have graduated from Auburn and some huge, huge family friends that are huge all the fans and I've, I've exactly, I've, I've asked them and they don't have a clue. So I get the, the, the portal changes, the NIL, all the stuff going on everywhere in the country, but do you think Hugh Freeze is the right guy for Auburn with all of these changes in the level of coaching ability you need to have in this day and age? Well, man, that is a loaded question. There's a lot of ways you can describe it. I'm, I'm, no, seriously, because at the end of the day, Auburn can't keep changing coaches every two years. Somewhere along line, it's got to stop or it'll never stop or you'll never get anybody because people are like, you're not committed to the program. I talked to a couple of Auburn people and the thing that they're frustrated about is they think that, that things are, think people control the athletic department outside the athletic department. It's not just the president of the university or the athletic director or the head football coach. It's, they're directed from outside sources, if you know what I mean. And I think they think until that problem gets solved, cause that was kind of that way at Alabama, right? He'll kind of say we came in and everything was, he cut all that stuff off and by God, I'm going to run this program. I'm going to run this program. It's the way it's going to be. If not, you can go and it worked out right now, you've got, Alabama has a great athletic director, a great president. Everything's kind of run internally. Does that make sense? They, they're not worried about outside influences or money and, um, and I think Auburn worries about that. So they, I don't know. I mean, I've never been a big, huge, free fan anyway. I've always thought it could coach off into the ball. I never questioned him on that part of it, but I just never thought about him being the head coach. And so, but, but Auburn somewhere along the line, I've got to make, they just can't keep changing coaches. Are you never going to get in consistency or you're just going to have to, at some point in time, you're going to make the decision, live with his athletic department and say, Hey guys, we, we appreciate your help and what you're doing to continue to do it, but we got to do it this way. But it's a hard. It's a lot of good points. A lot of good points. Yeah. You know, I mean, they got a, they got to recruit. They got to do it. Like, why didn't he get a quarterback out of the portal? Like, like everybody knew he probably needed a quarterback, like that does it. And I'll tell you, I thought the best quarterback in the world for Auburn was that, uh, Malik, Murphy or whatever that went to do from Texas. Right. And I saw that guy and I go, Oh my God, I got to go get that guy. I said, I would throw whatever I had that guy. And no, we're going to think what they told him because he likes other color jersey. Okay. Let's go. Oh my goodness. I love it. God bless him. Yeah. Well, uh, hey, Roger, we got about two minutes left here real quick. I do, I've got to ask you this question because Tennessee, we got, we got, uh, we got Vanderbilt, Alabama's got Vanderbilt today. They've got South Carolina next weekend. Then they get, they have Tennessee in needling stadium and there was a place that, uh, back in your last year, you went there and played. I think you even made the comment about that, uh, Gene Stallings had asked you, why did you say that? Because you got to come back in two years. The fact that you said something like we ought to pay property tax here and need to stand because you own it. Yeah. Right. He got, yeah, baby. Okay. Please. Yeah. I said, I know. Good luck. Yeah. You know, Alabama didn't lose up there, you know, I mean, and, uh, it's kind of crazy, but yeah, that, but, but Tennessee's looking different. Tennessee has, Josh Heifel's done a really good job and, uh, but we'll see. I don't know if they've been tested, but we'll, uh, they'll definitely be tested when Alabama's also up there. Well, we'll look here, Roger, as always, man, it's good to have you on gotta have you back on. Uh, and who knows? We might. Are you one of the, are you going to the Tennessee game or not? I, I am not going. I'm not going to ask you my, my, my nephew, who's an Auburn graduate, getting married in Vegas. That's a, I'm going to make it, baby. And it's over again, I might be able to get some free drinks out there. I mean, I'm excited. You may not, hey, you might not hear from me for a while. We'll check on you. We'll, we'll check on you from time to time. Roger's always brother. Good. Good to talk with you, man. All right, buddy. I'll talk to you soon. All right. There you go. Roger Schulz, Mr. Fu Manchu, number 66, two time. All SEC Center there at the University of Alabama and he's a character. He is a character. Yes, he is. When he first got going, I said, uh, you related to Killer B's, the comedian. He has that southern accent and he's going loud and loud and proud. So, uh, the great interview. Yeah. He, uh, he, he, well, he's been on radio for quite some time, of certainly locally in the, uh, mobile area along the Gulf Coast, you've, you've heard a lot of him. But, you know, we were talking a little bit about that lineup. I'm going to talk more about it coming up in this next segment, uh, but Auburn's got Georgia. And I mean, when you go on to San Francisco Stadium there in Athens, right now, I believe that, that Georgia is like a 21-22, uh, point favorite in the game and I think it might even be more than that, man. Yeah. Right now they are favored by 21. Um, you got, uh, another big game too, uh, Ole Miss and Southern, Southern, uh, Carolina. That's South Carolina. That's going to be, you know, 4-1, verse 3-1, um, that could be tight. That could be tight. I'm not sure about the quarterback for Ole Miss yet, it's a game time decision. And then we've got Tennessee and Arkansas, you know, Arkansas is still one of those teams. And I'm looking forward to seeing this game to see if Tennessee really is what they appear to be on paper right now, because Arkansas is, they're firing and they're playing in Arkansas. I think that quarterback they got green is a pretty dope and good quarterback. He's slender. He's slick. He's, he can, he's maneuverable. Uh, uh, he's a, he's a threat. So you, you need to watch him and we'll, uh, we'll talk more about that, that Arkansas Tennessee game coming up and we'll, we'll marry up there what they've done so far this year and what it looks like they'll be doing the balance of the season. All right. I'll tell you what, man. This time is going by fast. All right. Don't go anywhere. We'll put the wraps on this edition of Southern Fairway Sports Radio. We'll dark some more SEC football when we come back. Sing along. Long approach roads on your prime. So. And. Yeah. I was a highway man. Sing along. Long approach roads on your prime. I was a highway man. I was a highway man. I was a highway man. I was a highway man. There you go. Right there. Chris Kristofferson, the highwayman. Three of the four have passed. Willie's still the only one kicking. Yep. But that was because of how well he took care of himself and how well he does today. He's a picture of health. Thank you for playing that. That was good. Yeah. Well, that was for you, Bobby. All right. Hey, welcome back to Southern Fairway Sports Radio putting the wraps on this edition. Gonna line you up with the games that'll be happening today. Take a look at that. And before we do though, Bobby, you said you had a little joke. Yeah. I heard about an island field in Tennessee. They tore up the Astra turf and put down cardboard. Cardboard. Because Tennessee always looks good on paper. That's what you were saying. That's right. We'll see what they're made of today. Oh my goodness, Bobby. That's a good one right there. Well, let's just talk about that right now. Tennessee with a 4-0 record 1-0 in conference play. There are T-2 in the standings in the SEC. And they'll take on that Arkansas team who is 3-2 coming in, 1-1 in conference play. They're ranked a T-7 in the SEC. I'm going to tell you. They're going to be playing in at Razorback Stadium. They're in favor of Arkansas. And guys, get set. I think Arkansas is going to surprise you. I think Arkansas is going to surprise you. This is a perfect storm for Arkansas. I believe that they are... I think I'm pulling for the Razorbacks. There it is right there. Well, that would be a huge upset and an amazing win for Arkansas. But, you know, it's not like they can't do it. I think one thing that's hurt them is, you know, some of the young play. Turnovers, some bad decisions. You can eliminate some of those at home today against a Tennessee team that... I don't know if that's been really tested yet. It could be a huge game. Well, this is why I say that is because you've got Arkansas, as I mentioned, three and two. And you might be looking past them. Tennessee has Florida next week, and they're looking at that Alabama team in two weeks, okay? And I think that may be... they're projecting ahead. Could be. That's just my thought, Bobby. Kind of changing the subject a little bit about Arkansas. When I was cheerleading in college, we did college camps at Fayetteville. If you've never been, it's a beautiful, beautiful place. Driving up the pig trail in South Arkansas, going up to Fayetteville. What a beautiful place. And Randy did date myself. When I went to the University of Arkansas to do that, guess who came and spoke to our cheerleaders? The President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. No, the head football coach, Lou Holtz. Oh, really? That's how old I am. But Fayetteville is a great place, and I am pulling for Arkansas. Go Hogs. Yeah, there you go. Some other games we mentioned Missouri. That'll be a good test for Texas A&M. They'll be playing at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas. That is on coming up in just about eight minutes or so on ABC and ESPN. Plus, we mentioned Auburn will be at Georgia, a 230 game on ABC. There at Sanford Stadium, that's going to be... if you're an Auburn fan, buckle up. Buckle up. Yeah, if you're an Auburn fan today, just go ahead and take it. And enjoy watching Georgia play. Of course, I'm more into golf than I am football. But I think one thing about Auburn, I hope to see is Hugh Freeze. What does he have to lose today? I think you will... Don't worry about them. Tell them everything, Adam. So that might help make it a little more exciting. I'm still going to pull for Auburn. Auburn needs some confidence right now, okay? They need to believe that they can win. And I believe that they have this mentality right now that they can't win. And that sounds crazy, and I'm not trying to upset Auburn fans. But I believe they've got to have a confidence builder somewhere. Let's see what happens. I know another school about two hours up the road. That's the same problem. Well, that's what I was going to mention real quick. If you are looking to go to a football game, a college football game, and I know money's a little tight for a lot of folks. So you say, "I want to take my family to a college football game." But it's just too dull going expensive to go to... you know, you can't spend a hundred bucks for a ticket to go to Alabama or something like that. Well, you can go sit right on the 50-yard line at M.M. Robert Stadium, The Rock in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where the Southern Miss Golden Eagles take on the raging cages today at one o'clock. For only $22, you can be sitting there. All right, old mistakes on the South Carolina. That'll be on ESPN at 2.30. Alabama travels up to Nashville, first bank stadium to take on the Commodore's of Vanderbilt. That'll be a 3.15 game on the SEC Network. As we mentioned, Tennessee and Arkansas, that'll be 6.30 tonight on ABC. And here's going to be a game that's going to be kind of a tale of tales. UCF and Florida. Yeah, this is a big time bragging rights. UCF is actually favored by a point and a half in this game. I believe that. They got beat pretty bad last week, all right? Napier, obviously, as we've been talking about, it's been on the hot seat. Can Florida pull something out right now? There are two and two overall one-on-one in conference play. They're ranked T7 in the SEC. So I think Napier really has to win. He has to win just about all the way out if he can. And I really don't even know if that's going to save his job. Yeah, they're talking about it. Yeah, they're talking about it. They've already got the money to get him out of there. Put it this way. I got a lot of family on a group chat. We play golf together. We love football. A lot of Florida fans, a lot of Auburn fans. All the Flora and Auburn fans are talking about Alabama football. That's all I got. That's all I got. That's all I got. Hey, we only got a minute or two left here. Let's talk real quick. Just want to remind you of Boom's tight kitchen now at the Piglet Wiggly in Fair Hope. She's in that food court. Go by there and see her. The food is fantastic. She's got a hot boy. You can go in and get it put together real quick. She can stir you up something, whatever you want. She's got soup. She's got grab and go. Go by and see her. She will take very good care of you. They're in Fair Hope. Matt, what you got going on with the Blue George Cajun Grill? What's the deal for today? A lot of great stuff. Right now, new to everybody since last week. We are now open on Tuesdays as well. So Tuesday through Saturday now. Three to nine. Sunday 10 to three. Still have that incredible brunch on Sunday from 10 to three. We upgraded our menu. We have a new appetizer out there now. It's called Thibodeau's Cheesy Balls. House may not make those cheese rolled up and fried. We've got some creole sauce to go on with it. Huge hit. The staff love it. The guests love it. So come try that one out and just take a look at the views. This is the best time of the year. You've got the best sunsets of the year in October. You've got some of the best weather of the year in October. Come out. Sit on the deck. Enjoy the weather. Enjoy the bay and eat some really good food. And there's no doubt, Bob, you mentioned it's going to get maybe down in that 54. That's a perfect bet out there. Hey, we're looking forward to tomorrow. We're going to be Gulf Shores Golf Club, Southern Fairways Golf Tour. Our Tour Championship is tomorrow. Bob, you've got an event going on at Quill Creek tomorrow. But I do want to mention tomorrow is a big day for Southern Fairways. We're giving away three trophies. We're giving away the Tour Championship trophy. We're giving away the Southern Fairways Cup trophy. And we're giving away the Colonel George R. Hall Sportsmanship Award. And we have got a very good winner of that. Yes, we do. And thank you for including my dad. And we certainly appreciate that. And Dad showed a lot of sportsmanship. It taught me how to play golf. And I'm missing me every day. And it's very nice of you and Joy to bring that up. And had the Sportsman of the year for the Southern Fairways Golf Tour in my dad's name. I certainly appreciate it. I'm sorry I can't be there. I've got to have Lions Club tournament tomorrow. We've got about 100 players. So I'll have to miss tomorrow's event. But please give everybody my thoughts and prayers. And I hope everybody has a great day. It'll be a lot of fun down at Gulf Shores Golf Club. One of my favorite places to play. I really enjoy that course. But yeah, we'll have a lot of fun. Good luck to you. I know you've got over 100 players there at Quill Creek tomorrow for that Lions Club. But before we get out of here, I think we've got about a minute or so left. What you got going from the Lions Club? What have you got going on down at Quill Creek? Well, next week will be the MGA club championship. It'll be Saturday and Sunday. So we'll crown a club champion for the Men's Golf Association at Quill Creek. In November, we've got the Knights of Columbus, Friday night at the end of the month. We've got Couples Wine and Nine at Nine Hole event. It comes on at four o'clock on the last Friday of the month, which is a lot of fun. So we're busy. Golf courses in really, really good shape. We entertain mobile seniors coming up this Thursday. So a lot going on at Quill Creek. Where do we always have a game for everybody? And you certainly do. There's no doubt about it. We certainly want to thank some of the great sponsors of the show. Macon Lotta Motive, Shrickson Golf, Boo George Cajun Grill, Glenn Lays Golf Club in Foley, Ben Murphy Roofing, Easter Shore Toyota. And Hyundai, Kraft Farms Golf Course in Golf Shores also, the Peninsula Golf Course. Get a chance to go by and see them, tell them we sent you. Lisa Johnson Realtor, Fairhoek Golf Works, Quill Creek Golf Club, Boomstike Kitchen, and the PSR Radio Network. Matt, thanks for taking time to be with us, my brother. I look forward to hanging out with you. Good luck to you tomorrow. Thank you, sir. Because team challenged those points or adding up. That's right. I'm stuck at 19th right now. Let's go, Matt. Go, Matt. Bobby, thank you, brother. Thank you. All right. Hey, for the whole staff here, I'm Randy Bergen. Hey, guys. Let's remember the folks that have been hit by Hurricane Helene. And say a prayer for those folks for sure. All right. Until next week, I'm Randy Bergen. Have a great day. Bye-bye, everybody. (upbeat music)
