Coming to you live from the Eastern Shore, Toyota and Hyundai Studios. The Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report. Here's your host Randy Bergen with Coach Rick Cleveland and Coach Mark Leseter. And good Saturday morning to you as we welcome you to the Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report. We're coming to you live from the Eastern Shore, Toyota and Hyundai Studios located right here in Daphne, Alabama. We are glad to have you here with us. I am Randy Bergen. Coach Rick Cleveland is back in the house. Coach Mark Laster is here as well. So the three musketeers back together again. I'm not touching that. Why? Because that's chocolate and I have to stay away from that. Wow. Okay. I mean, you know, when you get shots to try to lose all that nice tree, you probably need to stay away from it. I am. Whether the Snickers are all here. The Snickers. There you go. There you go. There you go. Snickers. That's a good alternative, but I can't eat that either. I can't eat that either. How about the three Stooges? That's even better. That's probably a good analogy. That's a good start. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. Boy, I tell you what, a lot going on. Coach, welcome back from your trip. I know you had a wonderful vacay, if you will. Well, we had a great trip, Randy, going up that at New England coast and going to Martha's Vineyard and you get over to this little kind of inlet on the bay and you see a boat pull up and they got about 75 to 80 baskets of lobster. Wow. And you know, they pull them off and then you go order one and they put it in the boiler and they boil it lobster. And you know, it's, let's just say this, I've had enough lobster for about five years. So it's a bit of an overindulge. Absolutely. Okay. That's just, yeah, I guess that's kind of my MO. So yeah. Yeah, me and you both, bro. Well, that's good. That's good. I know you had a great time. It was beautiful up there. Mark, congratulations. Bayside gets another win last night. Big win for us last night. Went up to Hillcrest Evergreen. And if I'm not mistaken, they're the number two team in the state in 3A. And our kids just kept fighting and rose up and really, you know, we had some, we had some injuries. We got some guys that are out. We had a little sickness this week and some new guys stepped up. Some really, really amazing things took place during the game. Really proud of those kids and proud of the, the fight that they had all the way to the end of it. That's tough place to play. You know, their kids played their guts out and ours did too. And we just happened to come out on top. But I thought our, I thought our, you know, I've been fortunate to be around a lot of good staffs in my life. You know, really have. And I just think our coaches did a really good job. You know, coach Trotter, you know, did a good job offensively and doing what we do well. Bracken Smith, our offensive line coach, he had his hands full with that massive front that Hillcrest threw up there. And then coach Pratt, our defensive coordinator, had a really good game plan. And, and then of course, I can't go without telling my son what a great job he did with our secondary last night. And he's really coming on as a coach and really learning how to coach the defensive side of the ball. And he was just a lot of fun for all of us last night. And it was, it was a really satisfying win. As a coach and a dad, you got to be proud to see you. I told him before the game, we were getting ready to go do something. I put my arm around him and I said, buddy, I tell you what, I win loser draw tonight. I'm glad to be doing this with you. That's awesome. That is really, really awesome. And no doubt, coach, I know we got a special dedication. Do want to remember all the folks that were affected by Hurricane Helene dealing with all of that. And man, what a mess it is up there in North Carolina, Georgia, the eastern part of Tennessee, Virginia. That whole area over there, let's keep our thoughts and prayers for those. And if you have an opportunity and you can afford to, to, to donate some money, I know that I did with the Samaritan's Purse. That's the Billy Graham deal. And, and I'll tell you, it's, if you can help them out, help them any way they can, because they certainly need to help. And I don't know if they're getting it from where they need to be getting it from. You know, one of the things that really bothers me and I, this is a political statement probably, but we're giving to all of these victims that, that, that apply and do whatever $750 to help defray the cost of what they're going through. $750. It's not going to, it's not going, I mean, that'll buy them groceries to, to cover what, and we're giving millions and millions and millions of dollars, billions of dollars to people to cross the border and come in here and live and then we're paying them to live here. So I got a real, I just, I don't know. Yeah, it's a problem. That's a problem. That's a, that's a show we could certainly do. I don't think there's a question about that, but we still want to keep our prayers, our thoughts and prayers with Ben and Michelle Thomas as well. Absolutely Ben and Michelle and their daughter, Alyssa, Alyssa had a, had a child that was born 14 days ago now today and boy, baby Maxie didn't make it and boy, I, I, I can't imagine. I just can't imagine what and Ben and Michelle have just maintained that, that, that faith that has carried them through this and continue to praise our Heavenly Father even through the valleys of life. And I just can't, I mean, I just, I can't imagine what they've gone through and poor Alyssa went through the pregnancy and then delivered and Lord have mercy and she's, you know, she needs all of our prayers, all of our prayers. And I'm proud of the coaches around the state of Alabama that's on our prayer chain. Boy, they have just responded and, and, and tried to love Ben from a distance and Michelle and Alyssa and, and Maxie and, uh, yeah, yeah, it's been a, it's been a tough week for that family and it's just going to continue and they, they need to be, you know, they covered our prayers. I know that and at the same time, Ben was, you know, this, this Ken Lett Jr. that, that broke his neck as we can say now because it's been reported, uh, the TR Miller, uh, young men running just the, the kickoff or turn back against you and that's right. I got us mentioned something here, guys, and, you know, our trainers don't get enough recognition. Of course, Mark, you had your life, saved by the encore. Beth Johnson. Yeah. And, uh, the trainer there, Stacy Harrison sprinting onto that field. He saw it. He knew and he got there. He was the one who took that face mask off of the helmet and he kind of took over, you know, he kind of asked everybody to back up and, uh, boy, I think, you know, I think he played a major role in, in Ken Lett Jr. being here with us today. That's right. So thankful for encore, the people that do what they do, especially thankful for what Stacy did in that situation. He went down in 18 minutes after he went down. He was in an emergency room. Wow. Yeah. That's, that's pretty cool. That really is. And, you know, I think a little update on him. He has got movement in his arms and, uh, his, uh, and feeling in his feet. I don't know if his legs have moved yet, but I think he's got feelings. Well, and, and of course we can't say it, but I think that is a repercussion that is expected from the fusion of that C5, C6. So that was not unexpected from the doctors. And now we're praying for a miracle. That's right. And he has got an appointment at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which is the very best one in, in, in our country for sure. And his attitude has been fantastic. That's right. I talked, I talked to coach Hubbard, uh, uh, I'll put it this way. I, it's awesome messages. And he and I messaged back and forth on Facebook. And it seems like the young man is really doing well. That's awesome. That's key. Keep, keep, certainly keep them in your prayer. There's no doubt about it. Hey, I also want to say this for any before we get off last week, guys. I'm going to tell you something. I was so glad you guys got to go and do, uh, your trips, because I know those are wonderful things to do. And I just want to give a shout out again to Ann Schilling for coming and, and then doing the show with us. She and I had a great time together and I just can't tell you how much I appreciate her. Taking her Saturday morning, right, taking time to get up and ride with me over here and, and hang out with me for two and a half, three hours, you know, and, and just, and just did a great job. And she was, she had a lot of fun. I wish y'all could have seen her. What a wonderful story she's got. And the, and the change in her life is, you know, has been miraculous since she found out, you know, she had, had cancer and how God is using that to change her life and change the people around her. It's an unbelievable story. And I really enjoyed that. And I want to thank her again for spending a couple hours with me. She was fabulous. She was absolutely, I mean, she just opened up and boy, she, she had me in tears. I tell you about that story. I'm sorry. You know, you can go back and listen that. If you missed any part of it, you can go back and listen. You can go to FM talk one of six, five, hit the podcast, look up, perhaps sports report and, and it'll be right there. Be right there. Listen to it. So take a listen. I promise you, you will enjoy it and get you a hanky because you're gonna need it. That's okay. There's no doubt. All right. Hey, look, we're gonna take a time out. them all in that's amazing guys and you know I was thinking when somebody called the Montgomery Academy and Trinity score 28 27 I wonder if Trinity scored late and went for two those two those two don't they don't send birthday cards no they don't so you know that's some interesting scores on here still a lot of points being scored defense is definitely at a disadvantage in today's world in at every level yeah but you know and I saw last night we were at Helene last night Richie Busby's more Richie Busby's got a really good team at Helene and they're only three and three in that six a region three it's a really good region Spain Park is 5 and 0 now 6 and 0 Chelsea is 6 and 0 that's two really good teams up there so they're fighting to see who gets in Smitty Grotter and him took a tough tough loss down 35 to nothing at halftime 35 to 7 it was 35 to 7 man man man hey we're gonna take the time out when we come back we're gonna talk a little wildcats of citronel football we do that with the head football coach Jason Rolle he'll be on with us to get a big win last night 14 7 or UMS right and we will talk with him about that when we come back you've got to tune in to the Thompson tractor prep sports report welcome back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report the pop's market communication lines are open at 2 5 1 3 4 3 0 1 0 6 here's your host Randy Bergen with coach Rick Cleveland and coach Mark Leseter and welcome back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report I am Randy Bergen along with coach Rick Cleveland coach Mark Laster we continue talking high school football I can't believe it's going by as fast as it does in coaching you know we always say that it seems like you just started and I and hear your toward the end of the season and and Rick we got a special guest on the line with us right now well we sure do citronel had a I'm gonna say this about this win last night this was a huge win in this in coach Jason Rolle's career I know that citronel has been on rough times for a few years coach Rolle has come in and done an amazing job there and everything I hear is that that community is unified and support and coach and I'm super excited about that coach welcome to prep sports report and congratulations on a great win last night how you good morning Rick man I appreciate it and thank you guys for having me on now I got to apologize to this guy we're coming back from Birmingham last night coaching I was reading that and listen you know and Jeremy Rolle and that may be your brother is Jay are you kin to Jeremy Jason Jeremy Jeremy's a distant cousin of mine and you know he's over in Georgia now coaching but yeah he's he's a relative of ours well my apologies because my wife said Rick is coach Jason Rolle and I've known this I've known Jason for a long time yeah he's coached for a long time and a tremendous football coach but I want to apologize to you publicly that I sent it to Jeremy and that's uh that's a compliment Jeremy's a great football coach and he's had an outstanding you know career and so that's uh man that was a compliment well and it meant it's meant to be a compliment Jason because you have done such a great job there I want you to talk a little bit about the culture that you inherited and the culture that you're trying to develop because of that's a huge win to beat UMS and the win in his high school coach up until last night and Terry Curtis in his program that's a big big win for for Sistranel yeah first off let me say you know Terry Curtis man I think the world with him and he's uh a phenomenal football coach but man he's uh he's a better man and just getting to talk to him before the game and you know hearing the stories of how he started and we talked about sometimes that you know when he went in to show high school and he was sharing with me you know uh the time that they wanted to uh you know come in and they wanted Viager you know he's like hey guys this is when the ones were supposed to win first and the rest of I was like you know you know Coach Curtis that's kind of where I'm at let's come in and let's take care of the things we can control and let's let's do the right things off the field and on the field and and the wins will start coming and uh you know that was one thing that was kind of highlighted to me when talking to him last night but uh you know when we got there one of the things that I noticed this was we were so far behind in the weight room and we're still not caught up and I think you know we're probably another 18 months out from even being caught up in the weight room and then secondly one of the things I've seen is any kind of negative play or or a bad moment or adversity our kids kind of hung their head and uh they didn't know how to fight back and and they're learning how to fight back and understanding that when bad things happen you know good players and good men they take the moment back and they stand up and fight so that's been a couple of the biggest changes I've seen and we're still building upon that we've got a long ways to go but man I'm so proud of our kids and the fight and the resist that they have uh there's some moments last night we could have uh we could have gave that football game away you know you know best had first to go on the floor uh did not score and we held them out on floor and you know that's a that's a huge momentum swing in the ballgame and so man very proud of our kids and our community you know those of us that have coached with Terry and I spent 20 years with him I echo exactly what you said Jason and he's he's that way I mean this there's not a day that goes by that Terry's not on the phone giving advice to a young coach from Huntsville to Mobile I mean they they they call him and and he sits there and gives him as as much of his wisdom as he can give him and and and always returns those calls to those young people so thank you for saying that about Terry um James Reed when when I when I think about all that you know as a team game but well you really had a player that stood out last night and contributed a great deal to your team to win it he did and uh you know James Peanut Reed we call him Peanut and uh he's just uh a tremendous young man um you know I've seen so much growth in him in the last two years and he'll tell you he was uh he was probably a selfish player when we got there and uh he has turned into such a team player for us and he plays defense plays offense play special teams back up snapper uh backup punter you know holder on uh field goal PhD uh you know last night he had a big interception um return back to about the 50 gave us great field position uh had a had a uh punt return I mean a block punt return for touchdown and you know just had a tremendous night and you know that's one of the things that that we talked about all week was you know details and discipline you know we got to be detailed we got to be disciplined we can't make mistakes and you know because Terry Curtis teams are not usually gonna make mistakes and uh last night I felt like you know we capitalized off some of their mistakes on the turnovers and and the and uh return put uh return block punt for touchdown so um and I was huge and Peanut was a big part of that you know coach this is more I was thinking about I saw your name on our list about citronel uh in and of itself the town of citronel in that community there when I first came to alma Bryant back in 99 we played citronel that year and uh we had a really really good team but I will never forget the sense of pride those folks in citronel have that stadium was packed they had a good little old football team we were a classification or two ahead at that time I think if I'm not mistaken all I know is it was in the fourth quarter and those kids from citronel were fighting their guts out for every inch they got it was and I've always been impressed with the type of kids in the community that citronel is tell us a little bit about that it just it's got a blue collar mentality where those kids do not mine work and they'll come to work and you and what you're talking about catching up in the weight room that's going to be something that y'all catch up and bypass I believe yes sir well 1999 I was I was on that field playing against you coach and uh I remember that night I think this door was 21 to 14 you know beat us um you know I remember that stadium being packed I remember the the news five helicopter flying over the field and we just talked about that last summer uh at media days and and how that was meant that was the epitome of high school football and it's kind of talking how much has changed over the last 20 years but man I do remember that night and yeah what a great atmosphere um you know but but the kids you know we do we have blue collar kids you know we have a lot of kids that don't come from much but uh they'll give you everything they got they show up you know they show up early they stay late they work their tails off you know we've we've had uh probably 114 kids out in the spring and I think you know we still got about a hundred on the roster which is asking about great fantastic first for our kids and uh you know you know I hate it for some of our young kids because we're limited on coaches but you know we've played a small freshman schedule this year a JV schedule so we played about nine games for our young guys and to me that's the only way you build it if you're getting you know live reps and and we're trying to give those guys all the opportunities they can get and man I've been so proud of our younger of course we've got a lot of freshmen and sophomores that are playing on Friday nights so but uh but those kids are and their parents you know have to be tremendously proud of them and um and they just keep showing up and I hope they and pray that they keep showing up you know Jason you say something that is well we got about two minutes here but you really you really might have a poignant statement right there because what you're doing is these are kids and and Jason these are the most fun places to coach especially when you're from there and you played there and you know you know how much it means to the people that you played side by side with and to create that and a lot of those kids have to defend themselves in all kind of situations that's why there's such a complex in many situations of me versus we and you hit the nail on the head what you're trying to do is transform that me situation into we and it sounds like you've dug on just about got you you're headed down the right for lane highway to get there yeah I think so that and that is that's kind of one of models our principal adopted man we over me and you know um when we came in here we knew that we had to bind together and it's Rick you've been coaching a long time and Mark y'all both been coaching for a long time and it takes a dank village to have a good football program it does I mean it's a lot of people that go into our Friday nights from administration to volunteers to our quarterback club and the parents you know we've got guys that do chain games and from everything from A to Z man there's so much that goes into Friday night I wish I wish every parent could come just start on a Sunday with a coach and just spend the whole with what these coaches go through and then kudos to these guys that are still doing it I don't know you see a lot of coaches getting out but man we want to continue doing it the right way and that's the honor God and work hard and those two things if I can't if I can't do it and build it on those principles this time for me to get out and if we can't honor God and work hard and if that that recipe for success don't work then it ain't meant for me that's right well I can tell you right now you got two coaches sitting in here and a guy that played a lot of football himself and we're pulling for you and by the way who is your principal oh Joe Brewster Joe Brewster and I don't know Joe but I can tell you this if he adopted that we versus me I love that Jason thank you so much pal and congratulations celebrate this win but you got another one next Friday night I'm sure but congratulations and I'm sure Terry Curtis will be on the phone with you to congratulate you again at some point in time yes sir man I appreciate y'all and all that you guys do for prep high school sports thank you buddy thank you pal take care thank you right there coach yes sir Coach Jason Ralph hit football coach for the Wildcats of citron Hill nice win last night 14 7 over UMS right Terry Curtis if he wins that remains the yep all time winning his coach but now Danny Horner slipped up there they would put him back in a tie they put him in a tie that's right yeah hey real quick I gotta do uh so the south chalk tall score was not 412 it was 44 there you go 12 over Fruitdale all right there you go just the correct two savings there you go hey we take a time out when we come back coach Rick Cleveland has got our leadership segment right here on the Thompson tractor prep sports report welcome back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report PSR is live every Saturday from eight until 10 a.m now back to the show and we welcome you back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report glad you are on board with us this morning got a lot to get into this out I'll tell you this hour is almost gone though right next hour we've got Keith Etheridge the football coach head football coach for Auburn high school he's going to be on with us we'll talk a little Jackson football as well but right now it is time for our leadership segment coach Cleveland it is all yours you know I appreciate Go Pest and uh you know the guys Nathan Cox and those guys at 68 ventures for sharing these thoughts with us and you know I don't know if you've ever read the four agreements guys I really don't if you hadn't you need to and um this kind of hit home with me because it's something that we preach to kids all the time Mark sees I mean it's right along those lines and Brian Johnson wrote this and um you know I don't know if he's got coaching in his background or what but I'm gonna find out because the four agreements are something that resonates with me number one the first one be impeccable with your word do what you say you're going to do be impeccable with your word do what you say you're going to do you know religion and we talk about religion a lot on on this show and faith and you know religion talks about sin and sinners and but let's really understand what it really means to sin a sin is anything that you do which goes against yourself everything you feel or believe or say that goes against yourself is a sin you go against yourself when you judge or blame yourself for anything but being without sin is exactly the opposite being impeccable is not going against yourself when you are impeccable you take responsibility for your actions but you do not judge or blame yourself so when you're impeccable we don't use our word against ourselves by indulging in negative self-talk guilt or shame we also don't use our word against others in blaming criticizing or gossiping we do what we say we will honoring our commitment and only making commitments we intend to follow through on number two don't take anything personally boy boy boy boy why is this agreement such a big deal well nothing other people do is because of you is because of themselves nothing other people do is because of you is because of themselves now the important thing to note here is the it's that we are exactly the same in all kind of different situations whether we know it or not but we need to base our opinion of ourselves on how someone else treats us when we do that we're in trouble you know when you make it a strong habit not to take anything personally you avoid many upsets in your life your anger your jealousy and your envy will disappear and even your sadness will simply disappear if you don't take things personally number three don't make assumptions I think there's so many of us in the world today that do make assumptions and there's a little acronym that tells you what you do when you're assuming something you know I think we all have a tendency to make assumptions about everything the problem of making assumptions that we believe that they are true we really could swear sometimes they are real we make assumptions about what others are doing or thinking we take it personally then we blame them and react by sending emotional poison with our word that's why when we make assumptions we're asking for problems we make an assumption we misunderstand we take it personally and we end up creating a whole new big drama for nothing well there you go third agreement don't make assumptions and the final and the fourth one is always do your best because you see when you always do your best we need to strive always to do the best if we want to bring those other three agreements alive and of course sometimes we'll be totally on and our best will be amazing and other times we might be a little tired and our best won't be quite as stellar but as long as it's our best at that particular time it's all good you know and this is something that coaches kind of thrive on all coaches do is ask their players to be the very best they can be and you can't reflect on what's happened one of the things that I've learned listening to Nick Saban and I you know I'm an Auburn fan but I'm a Nick Saban fan and one of the things that Nick Saban always says is you got to forget the last play you just got to forget it you got to be your best on the next play and in the next play you got to forget that and you got to be as good as you can be in that play you know the the four agreements when I look back at them and I was looking at them last night at halftime of our football game at Helena the most important one was to me was being impeccable with your word do what you say you're going to do you know if you say you're going to help somebody help them if you say you're going to pay a bill pay the bill if you give someone your word that you're going to be somewhere be somewhere if you tell somebody that you will honor what they ask you to honor and they ask you not to repeat something then don't repeat it you know keep it between the people's ears that have spoken it and when somebody does that then your character is where it should be you determine where your character is other people can't determine your character you determine your character because you make the decisions that you make and then you are responsible for your actions I love those four agreements and I think it's something it's kind of like the golden rules as things we can live by when we tell somebody we're gonna do something we need to do it we need to be there we tell players that they need to you know to strive to be the very best they can be and sometimes when we're on the field we take a couple of drills off and just get through them instead of trying to make that drill the best we can make it and we want those players to be the best they can be in every given situation and his coaches and adults and his moms and dads we got to set that example for them and I'm afraid that our society today we're not having all of those examples set by parents like our parents said for us we've lowered the standards that's right that's exactly right the standards are and I noticed in Clay's house he says he's got a quote up there says the standard is always the standard doesn't change it just does not change I appreciate that I appreciate Nathan Cox and 68 ventures and those guys keeping us up to date on the things in our world that make a difference in people's lives yeah I agree you know Rick I I said and I was listening to you and there's so many things that when we talk about leadership you talk about we when we talk about this every day in education yeah in some way shape or form yeah you know don't tell me why you didn't get something done you said you were gonna get it done why didn't you do that that goes as a teacher as an administrator as a student as a parent everybody in that thing is together yeah do what you say you're gonna do and don't assume everybody's gonna do it then just do what you're supposed to do you know on that I listened to one of Doug Barbara's podcast this week and he said if we in education aren't teaching children to be leaders who is going to teach that's right that's exactly right first hour come to go on the second hour coming up next coming to you live the Thompson tractor prep sports report presented by alpha here's your host Randy Bergen with coach Rick Cleveland and coach Mark Lasseter and welcome into the second hour of the Thompson tractor prep sports report as we're coming to you live from the Eastern Shore Toyota and Hyundai Studios located right here in south Alabama glad to have you on board with us I am Randy Bergen along with coach Rick Cleveland coach Mark Lasseter first hour went by extremely fast coach before we get into some to some local scores again we want to make sure we put thoughts and prayers out for those folks affected by Hurricane Helena and Ben Thomas and his wife and family well we sure do really want to recognize that you know all that Ben has done for so many not only coaches but players and and you know it's such a godsend to all of us and he blesses us with his articles I mean if you if you read today's article it'll bring you to your knees but we we certainly hope that you'll remember and continue to pray for for Ben and Michelle Thomas and wow coach Saban's doing a he's doing a little dance up here and they putting on another tie it looks like a Michigan tie in Michigan yeah but we do hope everybody will continue to to lift up Ben and Michelle and and and Alissa is you know it's been a tough week for them and we certainly will continue to pray for them as we do for for Ken Lett Jr the young TR Miller football player who was injured last week local scores last night I'm gonna give you the winners Daphne defeated Davidson Fair Hope defeated Foley Baker defeated Roberts Dale Sarah Land defeated Baldwin County High School Spanish Ford defeated Blunt St. Paul's defeated Gulf Shores Viger defeated Elberta Citranelle defeated UMS Valley defeated Silicaga Jackson defeated St. Michael W.S. Neil defeated Satzuma Bayside Big Wind at Hillcrest Evergreen TR Miller defeated Cottage Hill Chickasaw goes to Central of Hainville and wins there eight to six JU Blackshire beat st. Loops last night also Thursday night B.B. Palmer had a what had a tough loss to Mueller in a great great football game I think it was 43 to 40 just a really good football win for those guys and coach Adam Bossett continues to do an amazing job he lost a lot of really good players from last year's team and he is building he's got a lot of young players playing and well I'm just so proud of the job that Adam's doing and you look down at look at Silicaga and those guys had a tough one last night at Valley but they're certainly getting better and better we we just were so excited for what's going on Talladega beat Munford last night big win for those guys there I didn't see a children's work score I didn't either and so I look for that maybe they had the night all they may have but you know when you talk about this football season guys I think one of the things that that really hits me in the face is seven a you know generally we have thought that Thompson was heading shoulders better than everybody else in seven a when you look at seven a this year I'm talking about you've got Auburn last night beat Central of Phoenix City I'm not so sure Auburn's not the best seven a team right now they go to Phoenix City and defeat Central and you just don't do that how you know that's just that it's almost an impossible thing to do you look here in Mobile Baker who's done a great job one Johnson's been sensational coming in from Hewitt Trustful and has just done a great job there but you look at some teams now Carver Montgomery they hadn't been beaten till Thursday night being in those guys at Enterprise beat 17 to 14 you hold a Bobby car team to 14 points you've done something I mean something special and then Vestavia last night goes to Prattville and beats Prattville at Stanley Jensen Stadium 49 to 14 that's just not so so you know there's gonna be some teams in that six day region I mean seven a region three that somebody's gonna be left to hunt they are uh that that's some really good teams there and you look in in seven a the the region that Auburn and Central Phoenix City in has another region it's gonna Dothan's probably gonna be left out and shoot Dothan's good now Jed knows guys at Dothan have done a great job Dothan ought to be playing for state championship you know year after year when you merge Dothan and Northview I'm talking about you talking about a really good football team and then I think six a you got to look at some teams there you look six a's and you've got to be a total play chartball is is again they're they're very very good and don't forget about Oxford and that well I mean you're right I mean they're six and oh right there and they're really good too and it's region six and now the way we've mumbled jumbled up the playoffs now and seven a central and Auburn could end up playing for the state championship and I like what we do I do like that but I also you know a team to watch out of Birmingham in Spain park well they're good in six a year you're right there's six a and they've been moving down there has helped them and they're undefeated right now they sure have that's going to come down to a train wreck between him and Clay Child before is all said you're exactly right and Tim McCakus has done a heck of a job and that place and you're talking about a region three six a region three you got Chelsea in there there's five and oh yeah five and oh right now as well as Spain Park and they got a place they'll place Spain Park here pretty soon it may be this coming week but that's well that's a tough tough region there muscle shows muscle shows one the last five in a row uh you look at the job that Scott Bayston has done at muscle shows I'm telling you and and guys it's mid year and coaches are still trying to figure out who are those backups that we can put in there because we're gonna have some injuries down the road there's gonna be some injuries and we gotta we gotta find people that we can plug in especially on those offensive and defensive lines there's gonna be see those are those are the things that people that all of us even as coaches we forget some we got to never stop getting those guys ready to play absolutely because you don't know during the game just like our game last night we had a guy that just wasn't doing some things right we had to replace him and then the next guy we prayed we've praised him we've got hurt and all of a sudden we're having to put somebody else in well you know have we got that guy ready is he ready to play yeah because he's he's supposed to perform like the first string guy is but he's not the first string guy that's right but we expect him to do that because we've worked in there so have we worked him have we given him that chance so to me the teams that in especially when you're in really tough regions the teams that are able to to build in some depth and get those depth guys ready to play yeah they're the they're the ones who are going to hold a little bit of an advantage going into the playoffs because they got a little bit more if somebody's not getting it done or somebody's getting hurt somebody's out they got another guy to roll in and when they're able to roll that guy in and continue to win those are the teams that are the most difficult to beat well you know everybody uses this phrase next one up yes well if the next one up is not prepared to play in the game not prepared to do what he's supposed to do when he supposed to do it and be as good at it as he can possibly be then we're not developing players and that's the thing that assistant coaches how that is their charge you got to develop me three players at every position to be ready to play because as we get into the tough this tough part of our season well there's going to be times somebody's going to go out that corner is going to go out that linebacker is going to go out we got to have somebody we can plug in there that's why now that's one of the things that Terry Curtis is the best i've ever been around that when when you have an off week what Terry does is he takes those he keeps the starters out of all scrimmages during that off week but those backups they're playing for playing time during that during that off week right and while the others may be over in shimmies they may be at just in shorts and shoulder pads they're going through game playing for the the next week but those backups now they're playing and they're in their own film and you're watching them and you're evaluating them and look we got to get him ready to play left tackle because somebody's got to be back got to be protecting our backside that's right and if he's not ready then we're not doing our job right and that's that's always been the theory that under Terry and steve savory's too you know as well as i do the depth was something that was hugely important to him and if you don't have it you're not going to be successful i promise you and being successful means playing for a championship yeah and that's not always the criteria that coaches look at sometimes a six and four season is a huge huge success it's like when i look at at robert stell robert stell under chris and the job that chris bell is done there to win three four games they had won a game in 27 games they were 0 and 27 at one time and they come in if they win three games in that first season that's a huge success i think so you you can't measure everybody by that which you measure those that are supposed to be competing for championships just can't do it but i do i will say you know i was looking or i was reading this article on danny horn yeah you know uh danny and and terry are locked in a battle yeah right now again it's going to go on our whole year yeah as to who's gonna who's going to come out on top well it may not even be those two it may be tall it may be tall business right who's sitting behind them with a couple of a few you know a few wins behind them absolutely and he's liable to take over up and both of them so we'll that's gonna be fun to write down the stretch nothing no doubt about it all right let's take a time out when we come back we'll talk Auburn Tigers high school football coach Keith Etheridge is on with us next they had a big win last night over central phoenix city two undefeated teams battling it out and the Auburn Tigers win we'll talk about that when we come back welcome back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report call or text the prep sports report at two five one three four three zero one oh six on the pops market communication lines now back to the show and we shortly welcome you back to the Thompson tractor prep sports report randy burgen coach rick cleland coach mark laster and you as we go to our our pops midtown communication line and welcome in coach Keith Etheridge the head football coach for the tigers of arborin high school coach thank you for taking time to be with us a big win last night two undefeateds go in and you come out with a win 38 33 or central phoenix city uh congratulations on the win oh thank you i appreciate it man thanks for having us on it it was a great game last night unbelievable atmosphere over there central and you know our kids and and their kids played their guts out last night i think everybody got their money's worth you know Keith i was trying to think last night 46 years of coaching after you and i got off the phone i told tracy i said you know we went to we went to central phoenix city with some really good teams at north view we went to central phoenix city with some really good teams from daphne and we never ever came out of phoenix city with a win i can tell you that it wasn't always it wasn't always fun leaving there either but uh yeah it's a tough late play oh man and uh you know jackson killed jackson kill gore must be doing a great job for you guys his quarterback position look look he's one of the best i've ever coached and i've coached some good ones you know it coach yep yep you know he he is a phenomenal leader he is he has he has that grit that you want in your quarterback he's got great arm talent you know he's tough he'll he'll pull it down and run it he's got good speed you know he's just one of those kids he's a general out there you know he's like having a coach on the field who can who can really spin it and put it in tight windows and we got some guys that are going and getting it right now you know when i think and mark i know you got something you want to ask Keith and i i want to ask you about this you got fourth and one patrick nyx uh who's done such a sensational job there at central lake city uh you got fourth and one uh central does right at mid field and if i got it right uh jackson levern he stopped that big running back williams on fourth and one that had to be a momentum building stop for your defense oh it was huge yeah yeah they had they had three and out of this the first series um and then then scored to go up 27 21 and then three and out of this again you know and then we're driving uh and had it had it fourth and one right there at mid field and and uh the coach googly taught a little a little extant up up front with the with our uh biker and egg out um that gap sort of got sort of got closed a little bit and then the the running back sort of bounce without the bee and jackson jackson just scraped over and met him in that met him in that air you know and just drove him back man to keep him from getting that first down on fourth and one and you know was a huge momentum changer uh then i think the very next play you know coach wagged eyes up the the wheel out with a omar out of the back field we scored you know to go back up 28 27 it was just a phenomenal game last night um i can't say enough about our kids can't say enough about our coach's staff how they how the the job they did you know last night you know and you know Patrick like you said he's done an amazing job over essential you know i told our guys going in you know they're at the top of the mountain you know they've defended state champions they've defeated got a great football team you know guys everywhere on that team you know um they you know and if you want to get to that point you got to you got to go and beat those guys you know and our guys did a great job last night you know coaching you got uh a couple of games coming down the turn pike as you look down uh you got Smith station coming up and then at Carver of Montgomery and Dothan uh that's got that's some ball games that you know that you're going to have to keep the wheels turning to be able to roll through this thing like you want it to tell us a little bit about um what you see uh out of your team as you get ready to go into the last last part of the last quarter of your season about how y'all are going to be able to get through these next three weeks and and and what y'all will do to make sure you stay healthy through that time yeah this this region's going I mean you know you don't get a lot of weeks off you know it's not nothing's easy in this region you know you got things like central enterprise obelica dothan you know uh I mean you got Carver you got you know I mean just really good teams every single week you know I say this I've said this all year there's going to be two teams left out of the playoffs out of all regions that are playoff teams I mean you take dothan for instance I mean they're a team that you know has taken everybody right there to the Y you know everybody central phoenix enterprise um Carver all those teams you know it's just a lot of teams that are very well coached in this region have a lot of talent but you know I've seen a lot out of my kids you know we've been in some close games we've had some have some games where we've taken over late late in the fourth quarter and you know but they've they've been steady you know and that's what I can say and our coaches staff has done a really good job you know offensively mixing the running paths I think we're I think we're close to 50-50 you know um you know and that's the testament to our offensive staff and and what they do and uh and our and defensively you know coach Guzman you know you never know where guys are coming from um he does a fantastic job of moving guys around and putting them in positions where they're gonna make plays our kids um just respond man they they they're resilient they're tough you know um we we just got it like you said stay healthy and and you know finish this thing out because we've got some really good teams coming up we're talking to Keith Ethers your head football coach at Auburn high school had a huge win at Phoenix City central Phoenix City 38 to 33 last night Keith why does it work what's the recipe when you put it in a bowl and you stir it up it worked really well for you at uh at Leeds tremendous program there you go over to Oxford at work you go to TR Miller at work you take the job at Auburn and it works what is that recipe what is it that you put in a bowl and you stir it all up and it comes out and it's a it's the silver slipper for high school football well I think it adds a lot to do with who you surround yourself with you know um surround yourself with good people and I think good things happen I tell Keith our kids all the time you know good things happen to good people I truly believe that and if you're a good person I think that uh you know good things are gonna happen for you and I've been able to surround myself with really good people I've been able to work for some really good people um and I truly believe it comes down to love of the kids that you coach you know if you I feel like you if you love those guys man they're gonna they're gonna play their hearts out for you and they're gonna they're gonna do the little things right that you ask them to do and you know I think that's been that's been huge for me I tell tell my kids I'm gonna love them love them you know in every situation you know they may get punished but it's you know gonna be out of love you know we want to do the right things you know we're gonna coach them hard and love them harder so you know I think that's that a lot has a lot to do with it you know we live in a world today where development of players seems to be it's it's it's kind of a minute it's not nearly as important because which it is but we're seeing that kids can now move to another spot and be and go where the getting's good but it seems like what you guys are doing at Auburn is you're developing players and you're developing them from junior high in middle school up into your freshman programs and talk a little bit about that because I think that's one our job is as coaches is to develop players not buy them that's right and we've got you know out of our 20 out of our 22 starters offense and defense I think 21 of those kids are Auburn kids and I cut now I do call Peyton Plata Auburn kid because he was here in 7th grade his dad so if you want to count Peyton Plata from somewhere else which 20 of our 22 kids that start are original Auburn kids you know and you know with the college here you have kids that move in and stuff but as our starters I mean most of those guys are original Auburn kids who've been here a long time and you know and they're just good hard blue collar kids you know we have we have some really good athletes like Peyton Plata like Omar Madison those kids but most of our kids are just like those kids you coach UMS right coach they they're just guys that come in there they put their put their nose to the grindstone and they'll stick their face in a fan for you you know like Jackson lover you know Jackson lovers a kid that you know he didn't he didn't start as a he didn't start as a sophomore you know he didn't start as a junior he's put his time in he got better and better and then you know now he's starting as a senior and doing an unbelievable job he's a 4.0 student got a 30 I think a 33 ACT you know he's going to play at Ivy League through somewhere you know he you know it's just those type of kids that that just do it the right way and and wait their turn and and you know then it you know it becomes you know we lost our middle linebacker you know he left last year he left him somewhere else a great player you know great kid another kid that was a 4.0 kid but his family moved you know and Jackson stepped in there and he weighed his turn and now he's having a big year for us so you know it it means something to these kids you know being at Auburn wearing that name across their chest you know they're they love it man and you know and it's what makes it special that's right coach congratulations again on the win on a great season so far good luck throughout the rest of the season thanks for taking time to be with us we look forward to having you back on real soon yes sir thank y'all appreciate what y'all do. Thank you for all that God bless. Thank you buddy Keith Ethers right there the head football coach for the Tigers of Auburn High School all right we'll take a time out when we come back we'll talk some Jackson Aggie football we do that with the head football coach Cody Forno he's up next right here on the prep sports report. Welcome back to the Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report brought to you by Alpha Insurance. Now back to your host Randy Bergen. Some good stuff right there. That is some good stuff right there for those of you who do not know who that is let me help you out that's a little boss gags for 1977 so I said it like case in case but it's gags in 1977 keep your feet on the ground keep reaching for this day. Oh my goodness oh my goodness that is. Hey welcome back to the Thompson Tractor Prep Sports Report. I am Randy Bergen along with coach Rick Cleveland and coach Mark Laster. Coach Laster we have a very special guest on the line with us. Yes we do we have one of the best coaches in this state and a guy that I just got the greatest respect for Cody Fornoir the head football coach at Jackson High School. Good morning coach. Good morning guys. Betty I tell you what I was a quite a win you guys put together last night over a very good St. Michael football team you guys must have really come out of the gates playing well. Yeah we we had met with St. Michael earlier this summer and some 707 and there was a you know it's just good good old-fashioned trash talking going on and and they beat us back early in early June and we beat them and later in that month and then so it's kind of carried over it's one of those games that that's a little bit chippy from time to time so our guys they definitely got up for this one. This game was billed kind of as our region championship which is it's not because we still got to go beat Orange Beach next week which they're undefeated in the region on a short week but our guys got up to play and when they get up to play like that they're tough to stop and I think that was evident last night. I heard there were coach out and I haven't seen the clip yet but I had heard that there was one of one of the most amazing kickoff returns that anybody's ever seen. Can you tell us a little bit about that how do y'all coach that up at practice? Yeah that's the way we coach it catch it run back 20 yards run sideways step out of the end zone. The only thing I was thinking at the time was like he ran each they grow well. I think it was officially a 91 yard return but he spent I don't know 30 yards in the end zone it's like get out of the end zone just get out of the end zone and then he just some he steps over a tackle and he runs 100 yards and scores a touchdown. I'm like okay that's just how we draw it up so you know good players make great coaches and he's a great player and it just makes us all look good. It's like yeah we put him deep and y'all kick it to him so yeah kudos that he's there that's all on each other. That guy he's if y'all haven't seen him play you need to come watch him live because it just you can't on film it don't quite capture just what he's doing out there and but he's really good guys. You know coaching and I've watched him and I've watched him and let me tell you you know the thing I love about him is he's not scared to stick his head in and block for his other people. No that's that's that's it. He's a humble kid and he's working hard he wants the team to win and he's just he's a good football player. He if we ask him to block he's gonna block if we ask him to carry it 25 times he's gonna do that like he did against Baker a couple weeks ago. Last night he only had 10 carries is what what our stats had and I'm like yeah well they had 130 yards and a couple of rushing touchdowns and then the big kickoff return so he was active all night and then of course he stayed played every play and I was blocking for landing and landing had a good night too at quarterback so you know he's just a complete kid and he's one that everybody wants in the program. You know and he's only a sophomore coach and that's the beauty of it you've got him for two more years but when you think about a community like Jackson and it is a community that loves their athletics. It doesn't matter if it's football, basketball, baseball, they even tennis they love their athletics and and the struggle the struggle in the world we live in today is we got to keep those guys in Jackson. We got to keep him right there and that's something we struggle with but at the same time when you when you watch this team coach I think after watching your film I watched two or three games after watching your film I think you've got anywhere from four to six kids that are going to play at the next level once they graduate. I mean we got the real power five guys we got a couple of linemen that's going to go play we got one right now that's the senior committed to Jackson state. We got a number five our receiver junior pain he's going to go play some college ball and then of course our big guys what we call a big four big five we got a defensive tackle that's got some offers so but that's kind of the the beauty of it these these guys are homegrown guys and and they're staying here but we provide an environment that that promotes them they're getting all this stuff that they need as far as recruiting and and they're good guys so it's easy to hold them together because they got other guys around them that are really good so it's you know I'm blessed on that side of it for sure but Jackson Jackson's had talent in years past and and they do a good job because of the the school the community the the history here of keeping these guys here that's right coach you know I've so blessed to be able to play against you guys when we moved up to four a for a couple of years and get to get to get to know that program and get to get to meet some of the people there and then I also have the opportunity to coach our old golf team and we've become Jackson and base-eyed have become really good friends those kids play golf together now but what I have learned we finished runner-up last year that was a good good matchup last year we got we got a good group coming through there too it really is but the thing about was I love about Jackson is like you were talking about the community feeds the community and they they kind of have a tendency to really surround themselves I mean sure every community's got problems but that community finds you know you you can you can come to Jackson and see what you want to see but we're going back our kids and support our kids and we're gonna make our kids better and they love Jackson High School is the center point and focal point of that community and I'm just telling you it is a pleasure to watch y'all's kids compete in all different sports for like because of the love they have for that grad school that's right and and look I say it a lot and it's just kind of one of our taglines here with Jackson but when you think of traditional high school football or either athletics in general this is a place that people kind of picture whatever that picture is in your mind we got home coming up in a couple weeks we'll we'll have this place sold out and we'll have a homecoming parade and it's just a lot of that stuff that that people think of you know what they write TV shows about well that's here it's a really good job sometimes the expectations are are a little too high for you know 16 17 year olds but you know having a high standard means we're doing things right and and our fans know our fans are smart football fans they got down to think Michael early last night because we knew Parker was limited and there's a you know visitor side was a little bit smaller so we got there and you know kind of like the floor last last week we played la floor and they scheduled us for their homecoming and somebody's like why would they do that and I'm like well they wanted a good crowd because I knew we were going to bring a crowd down there but you know just part of it and you know like I said I'm fortunate to be a part of this program well we're trying to hold these kids accountable and do things right with them and and the community does a good job and of course it takes some talent and right now I try to coach speak it some but these guys are good it's hard to downplay these guys because each week they amazed me and I've been coaching it for 20 plus years now and they're some of the best I've seen Coach I gotta tell you our time is up a man congratulations again on a good win and a good season we look forward to having you back on with us real soon okay yeah sounds great thanks guys thanks for having us on and go Aggie there you go good job coach Cody Flohanoi the the head coach for the Aggies of Jackson big win last night 55 16 over St. Michael's he's pretty darn good he has some talent over there there's no doubt let me tell you this and I thought about this coming home last night you can agree to disagree you can put him in 7a region three with Auburn and all that team and I think he can compete with them I do I think this football team that he's got very very good anybody in Alabama and when you say I think they could win a state championship they could compete in 7a and possibly win I think they could win at any level in high school football with this team that he's got right now that's saying a lot of that and he's in 4a yeah yeah he's he's he's he's got the coach just having he's got the talent I don't think there's any question well I need to speak on one that I think is a champion and that's Premier Collision and Premier Collision that kid just kicked that field goal I don't know how much he won $100,000 and well he's pro now he's amateur status okay okay but but you know I get a chance to go by and visit with Chris and Tyler and all those guys and kill him out at Premier Collision 1177 Sledge Drive and you're talking about family we talk about family and football well that is a family and when you go there you become part of their family and when you take your car your vehicle there you become part of their family they'll come to you they'll come take you back to where you need to go they'll come get your car they'll do whatever they need to do to take care and to make make sure that you're part of their family and when you get your vehicle back after you've been in a little fender bender or you've been in a major collision you're gonna think you've got a brand new car Martin Laster can attest to that from every direction because you're driving a what a brand new but not brand new Hyundai Sonata and I'm telling you it's a 2009 and it looked like a brand new car well guess what I've got another one over there right now it's an old 2005 pickup truck Chris sent me three videos in the last week of the progress it's making right it's keeping me up to date man I'm telling you that thing looks unbelievable is it for sale no okay that's what I figured no you guys go see Chris Gary's right collision 1177 sleaze drive or 101 North she'll and she'll and she'll and there you go you can reach them at two five one four seven eight forty five hundred and nobody better to take you out than a perennial winner in Steely Dan talking about three-year collision oh my goodness all right we take the final time out when we come back mark has got our camp grace segment this segment of the Thompson tractor prep sports report brought to you by camp grace now back to coach Rick Cleveland camp grace is located in west mobile is the summer home of camp wrap I hope camp mash camp smile and camp sugar falls as well as the home of outback mobile and is shared by many other community organizations throughout the mobile area camp grace is a place where God's love is bestowed freely upon others the true definition of God's grace you know guys I've told y'all that we're going through a little transition in my in my mom and dad's lives moving into independent living so and it's a big transition for him and moving into the shoulder house and we're getting men my brothers and my sister and our sister-in-laws and grandkids all are helping make this transition as easy as possible for for mom and dad you know it's just it's a difficult thing you know my dad said to me it was a day before yesterday we were talking and he said this is difficult he said this son this is difficult he said but you know it's the best thing it's the best thing for us and and I'm and I think mama and I are really happy that no matter what we're getting to do this together and it may it hit me kind of like a ton of bricks you know the two of them have been married for I think 67 years I think that's I think that's right I may be wrong on that but it's around that figure but um they have done move they've they've moved us and we've been together often on you know to all the kids moved out and started our own families they've been together all these years and the last several of them both of them retired uh and and health is deteriorating a little bit but they they're they're there at the house together every single day and take care of one another as best they can but it's come time now for them to move to a to a place where other people can help them and their kids can help them and I was thinking about that when dad said that the other day I was thinking you know that that goes right into that thinking that Rick you and I talk about all the time is a gratitude list how we're just grateful how we have I mean to me you know gratitude list or for people you know they're starting for people who have depression yeah it's for people who have lots of anxiety um you know it's something that'll help it gives me perspective you know it really does because I you know life the life that we live even when it's when we're things are good it's still tough it's tough you know my dad has having a hard time because he can't take care of my mom the way he wants to yeah that kills him yeah it kills him and uh that's his thing I'm gonna take care of you mom I've heard him say that ever since I've been born yeah and boys when I'm gonna take care of your mom yeah I'm gonna take care of her until then and right now he can't do the things like you know she fell not long ago and he couldn't get her up boy that just broke his heart yeah you know and so but he got her up you know and then since then you had to go to hospital and had some problems there but they got everything worked out everything went fine and uh my brothers and my sisters my sister my sister-in-law's have all been just going over there grandkids going over there helping what are they gonna take what do they want to do with this what do they want to do with that where you want and everybody's working together some families don't get to do that you're right you're right they don't yeah and it's bad I feel bad because I'm not there I'm not in Birmingham yeah you know and so I do what I can from afar and and do the best I can and and and yet it's such a joyful thing that I can read what I my brothers and sister are telling me what's going on every day there is this huge vine of a text messages right now there's probably a thousand to two thousand messages on there from the last three or four weeks right just talking about what we're doing my sister my sister who as you know is my hero you know she's my hero she has been over there packing putting stuff up sending me pictures this is what we did with this mark do you want this I knew I know this meant something to you and yes or no doesn't matter what it is it's just that that's going on yeah and I have so much to take away from that what a great gratitude list I've got this morning yeah you know just for that even though this is a tough time it's a tough time in all of our lives because we know mom and dad are really getting up there I mean dad's 88 yeah you know and he's the guy you know that has always made it he's done everything for everybody all his life that's his fourth day taking care of taking care of everybody and he can't quite do that and he hates to be taken care of yeah he didn't want somebody else to do it right but he's learning hey I got family that'll take care of me and I told him the other day on the phone is a daddy that happened because of what you and mama did years ago raising us yeah that's why this family is the way it is and as I think about a gratitude list this morning I'm grateful for my family you know Mark that hits on with me uh your dad and my dad were of the greatest generations right and uh my mom and dad were divorced when I was about four years old and that my dad was laying in a hospital in Birmingham and he was near the end and he looked me dead and he said son he didn't say son he said Rick said Rick one thing I want you to do I want you to promise me right here today that you'll always take care of your mama now they were divorced years and years years before that but that was his last wish to me he looked me in the eye and said you promised me you'll take care of your mama and your daddy has lived that life through all of his children and now now is your responsibility with your brothers and sisters to take care of him and how lucky are we to get to do that that's a blessing because you know what I did what we did yep and I didn't see my mom for 40 years right but when it came time we had to do what our dad asked us to do and your daddy has lived that and you get the chance to share that with him and that what a blessing that is to not only you but to all your siblings and it means so much to your mom and daddy for you to be there and he won't be here next week because you're going up there did two weeks and because you're going up there to take care of that they're gonna get we'll finish up moving the house and moving them out into their that's the last we'll close the house up that weekend boy and that'll be a celebration it will be it'll be a celebration it will be boy thank you for that morning that's that's real it is hey we got a great show lined up for you coming up next you always do Matt Brance going to be here Bobby Hall's going to be here I've
