This is the Evil Never Dies podcast with Bretton Carl. This podcast may contain adult themes, violence and strong language. Listener discretion is advised. [Music] Welcome back to the Evil Never Dies podcast episode 292. I'm here with Carl in the garage. Yeah because I'm trying to work on the haunted house and Brett's making me do this show which last night we were supposed to have a guest. Lisa went to the hospital. We tried to reschedule and we never heard from the guest so here we are. Yep so hopefully we're going to get that reschedule with him. He's over in London England so he was up at 2 o'clock in the morning or whatever. It's hard to navigate it I guess. Yep so anyway we got sort of rushed into doing something so we're gonna do Halloween for the return of Michael Myers since it's the beginning of October now so. Here we go Halloween for the return of Michael Myers directed by Dwight H. Little. Screenplay by Alan B. McElroy. Story by Danny Lippissus. Lippit. Lipsius. Larry Ratner. Benjamin Ruffner and Alan B. McElroy. Based on characters by John Carpenter and Deborah Hill. Produced by Paul Freeman. Cinematography by Peter Lyons. Callister edited by Curtis Clayton. Music by Alan Howard. Production Company is Frankiss International which is Mustafa Akhads. Production Company. He's ran every movie that's ever been released. Yeah up until 2002 and then he got murdered in 2005. Him and his carpenter and Deborah Hill you know started it. Yep. Distributed by Galaxy International releasing I don't even never even heard of that before. Never heard of it either. It was released on October 21st 1988 as a running time of 88 minutes and it really seems longer than that. It does seem longer. Country of origin United States English language budget was five million dollars and it brought in 17.8 million in the US alone. Yeah it wasn't in the big hit it might have made its money but they were expecting more after. Been away for a few years. Did pretty pretty good they tripled their money almost so. Well they already started filming Halloween 5 before this even came out so I kind of wonder. I don't know how we thought that well I think a lot of people seen it because a lot of people didn't like Halloween 3 because Michael Myers wasn't in it so I think everybody was excited to get Michael back in the. Yeah of course they call it the return of Michael Myers so people will go see it. Sort of a gimmick I guess. Yeah all right Carl why don't you give us the plot of this film. Well this picks up after Halloween 2 is the Halloween 3 don't exist in this world. Michael and Loomis were supposedly burned to death in the hospital but guess what they did not burn to death they just burned up so how many years has passed 15 10 10 10 years yeah this was yeah 10 years has passed Michael's back in and that's like a mental asylum place. Loomis is all burned up Michael is all burned up and for some idiotic, well we know why because the people running the asylum are crooked they're gonna move Michael on Halloween night to another facility because it's supposedly the 10 year anniversary so that don't go so well Michael gets out kills a bunch of people and starts heading to Hatenfield and Loomis starts chasing him and we are introduced to a new character Daniel Harris plays he is the daughter of Laurie Strode yeah Jamie Lloyd and she's sort of the the hero I guess of the movie and she's a kid Loomis has to keep her safe yeah and that's pretty much Halloween for her. All right let's go over the cast here first off we got Donald Pleasants coming back as Dr. Sam Loomis Ellie Cornell as Rachel Carruthers and she's like Jamie Lloyd's like I guess they were she was adopted by this family adopted her foster I can't remember which next we got of course Daniel Harris is Jamie Lloyd George P. Wilbur as Michael Myers and I in a couple of scenes Tom Morgan was actually played Michael Myers so they had two people play him on that Michael Pataki as Dr. Hoffman Bo star as Sheriff Ben Meeker Kathleen Kenmont as Kelly Meeker and she was she was sort of a slut in this movie yeah pretty much slut boyfriend Stealer next we got Sasha Jensen as Brady Leslie L Roland as Lindsey I guess that's supposed to be Lindsey from the original I think so Gene Ross is Earl Ford Carmen Philippi as Reverend Jackson P. Sayer he did he did a great job in that too as a guy he did oh he picked Loomis up right when Loomis was hitchhiking yeah old crazy preacher guy Raymond O'Connor as a security guard Jeff Olson as Richard Carruthers that was the dad Karen Alston as Darlene Carruthers the mother Nancy Borgen Rick as woman attendant David Jansen as man attendant ever they were the ones that took Michael a lot of the hospital at the very beginning of the movie George Sullivan as deputy Logan yeah they're the ones that they're the ones that were transporting Michael Myers I meant to say Michael rude as Alan big Al gateway Eric Hart as or in gateway Logan Field as under Alan B. McElroy as state trooper at the ambulance crash site and like I said he was a the writer for this film on this film - and Danny Ray as Tommy Doyle and that is the cast for Halloween 4 and this was also this was Daniel Harris's first film by the way and she did an awesome job in it for being dead for being 10 years old and I think Scarlett could have done a good job in it long as Chuckie didn't appear then Scarlett would be upset no Chuckies allowed all right let's guess we'll you probably got the blue right now I've got the 4k of this thing oh yeah you don't have any well of course not I'm in the garage working on the hot do you got any do you got any info on it it is a very good release the screen factory put all of them out a few years ago all of them except for what was it I think six seven and eight they put out later but they put all these out individually and a steelbook I paid a shit ton for them they got cheaper later on but they're worth it it looks better than it's ever looked most of the features are ported over from the previous releases but it's definitely a recommended 4k upgrade so yeah it's worth the money they're cheaper now I think screen factory made too many of them so they finally lowered the price but definitely recommended for the 4k of all these movies actually especially part six but we've already talked about that I think we have both copies we haven't actually covered six yet have we I don't we did some kind of a something to do with it so I think so I think we did the we did our top we did a review of our top ones so yeah we talked about six the entire episode which we're starting to do again so back to four definitely recommend the 4k from screen factory it's very good upgrade okay I guess we'll go into some trivia then this is some of this has got some about the production and stuff in it so starting out so Daniel Harris wouldn't be scared George v Wilbur would often lift up his mask in between takes to remind her that they were just making a movie and he was not really gonna kill her oh Daniel Harris kept the clown costume in the movie and for a few years after would actually go trick or treat and in it and then eventually I think just a few years ago she sold it to a fan that she had a contest auction charity auction yeah the girl Lindsay who drove Rachel and Jamie to the discount mark was going to be revealed as Lindsay Wallace from Halloween 1978 and have a larger part in the film as Rachel's friend and helping her babysit Jamie but uh that was cut for budget regent reasons and the third boy hanging out with Brady and whale in the way in the drug store was meant to be Tommy Doyle from the original film so I think that would have been sort of silly I guess that's why they're accredited the way they are um this is also where Michael Myers picked up his Michael Myers mask in the Halloween store it wasn't a very good copy but it makes sense to me because you know he couldn't get one of those Don Post's masks because this discount might only sold the rip-offs so yeah I did not like the mask in this movie at all yeah I know you know what he did if you look really closely altered it like four or five times throughout the whole movie in different scenes well I'm guessing in real life maybe they didn't have a um Don Post the deal or something is why they had to check I never really heard you got any trivia on the mask ah I don't know if there's gonna be any I'll we'll see how it goes here uh let's see here director Dwight H. Little did extensive research on the history of Halloween and many of its harvest images were put in the creepy opening sequence it is a good opening sequence it's got the the um what do you call it scarecrows and shit in it creepy looking yeah but they don't play the Halloween theme to a little bit further in there I didn't like that yeah yeah like too long ah here's a mass thing the mask on the movie poster looks just like the one used in the first two Halloween films than one in Halloween 4 that's because they used a still picture from the other movies so okay because it definitely is different looking than the than the cover of the thing so yeah that's I think the least favorite Halloween uh Michael Myers mask of any of the movies I think it was voted the worst yeah I voted the worst well you got it from discount mark what do you expect all right during production of the rooftop chase Ellie Cornell was injured by a nail as she slid down the roof after a quick trip to the local hospital for some stitches he finished up the scene with her bandages in place according to Daniel Harris is it didn't even fazer well if it didn't fazer why didn't she just keep by going to the dam yeah why'd she go to the dam hospital keep carrying that Daniel on your back up the steep roof exactly but you don't go to the hospital wimpy the entire shoot lasted 41 days and Ellie Cornell and Daniel Harris were required to be on set for 36 of those days leaves had to be imported and squash was painted to look like pumpkins now remember all that uh i think where was i think this was filmed in Utah yeah it's filmed so it was somewhere where they didn't have pumpkins and Utah would make sense that's kind of just dry arid country there i don't remember exactly where it was filmed but that sounds close i think it was a suburb of salt lake city if i'm not mistaken uh Allen B. McElroy wrote the script in 11 days and beat the rider strike by two hours i guess they had a big rider strike that year i'm sure they did they seem to have those every 10 years in the original script the opening shot was of a long hospital quarter suddenly blowing up and throwing lumus from the explosion i guess from seen basically from the end of halloween two and in order to show how lumus survived it was later decided the film did not have any corrections to the previous two connections to the previous two films and the explosive opening was never shot directed white letter little later explained we decided only to reference the first movie i think the reason was we didn't want to get tied up with a lot of logic a lot of logic police questions with Michael and exactly what happened dr. lumus Allen that's some bullshit yeah i know they're both fucking burned up so who is this guy saying this the director well he's a fucking idiot because they're both burned up in the damn movie what the hell well let me finish here Allen finish yeah he studied it very carefully so we knew that if if we hit any landmines or made any big mistakes you'd catch it but i didn't really want to be influenced artistically by anything than halloween 1978 but i think that would have been better showing the very end like sort of like halloween two how it started at the very end allowing one well this guy's an idiot i mean i don't know what he's trying to say because if that was the case why are the fucker they both burned up yeah that makes no sense maybe the producer over read wrote him and maybe they just didn't film that scene but i ain't never heard that crap in my life yeah i know they didn't need that scene but it was obvious that this was after halloween two so i oh no man exactly i ain't never heard that story before this director's don't make no sense i'm going to say that the producers over wrote and that's why they had the burn makeup okay in the school house i mean michaels masks mask appears briefly with blonde hair this mask was the original type chosen for the film however we decided to go with the design with brown hair resulting in reshoots the mask with brown hair was chosen to match the style scene in the first two halloween films in the series which is bullshit because the second one was a blonde haired mask and in part two or a very very light brown so it was not the same mask no it wasn't no it was not they claim it was uh carpenter claims that it like it stayed in the back of a car or some bullshit which i don't believe it they've never had the same mask in any of these movies to my recollection ever no they always look different but this one makes more sense because he had to go back at or steal it from a store you know so i could see why it would look different it makes total sense to me yeah uh george p wolver war hockey pads under the jumpsuit to give michael meyers a more imposing figure this was revealed in the documentary inside halloween five from two thousand you got that by chance it's on the 4k's yes okay cool i've watched all these things like a hundred times honestly all the trivia you're given i've yeah it's it's repetitive story but of course we're we're school in the audience so that's why i'm staying sort of quiet except for the director lying about the fire oh man that made me mad oh oh i guess it's revealed that don shanks who played michael meyers in halloween five was big enough that he didn't need the hockey pads yeah that george p wolver wasn't a very big guy yeah oh they had to pad him up oh michael wasn't that big in halloween one was he no not really so yeah these movies we we've said before they don't follow any kind of real continually in any halloween movie well probably four and five are the most closest together you know they are the closest that's definitely true so yeah um 1988 was the first year in which all three of the top horror franchises halloween five the thirteenth and nightmare on elm street all released new films in the same year halloween four by the thirteenth part seven the new blood and nightmare on elm street for the dream master additionally the first child's play was also released released in 1988 as were hellbound hell raiser two phantasm two all of which would also become major horror franchises so yeah but they also made here 88 was a big year but 88 led to the dion and a lot of these franchises because they were starting to oversaturate the market yeah you know we're getting to the get into the dark dark days here soon moustafa kaha the film's executive producer took control over the halloween film series by buying out the rights of his former partners john carpenter and debra hill right before you answered my question right before the production of this film was even finished you'd continue to answer my question brit okay what what's that question i don't know just keep talking you i'm not going to say anymore you oh shit yeah he he continued the franchise up until 2002 until like i said he was killed in a bombing over in a mon jordan i believe it was in 2005 and now his son took it took over a bunch of it i think molly true his son molly well bloomberg ain't got it no more so we'll see what happens next bloomberg uh this is the first time in the franchise where michael meyers is actually credited with his name as opposed to being credited as the shape i never understood the shape anyway i guess because he was like a looming lurking shape in the shadows a construction paper cut out of michael meyers can can be seen on a door on the second floor of the school just as jamie and dr luma's climb the scare stairs at around one hour and 13 minutes and that scene i guess that scene took like a week close to a week by itself with her being in the uh the trash shoot or whatever yeah i guess i had a hell of a time doing that so due to budgetary reasons this was the first halloween film to be shot in the 1.85 to 1 aspect ratio well i'm in the 1.5 ratio tonight i think yeah i think so you're you're a square i don't care i could have been up and down so you're lucky i'm anything uh i don't hear no birds chirping or nothing though that's that's sounds pretty good because i got my ear my earpods in oh okay it blocks it blocks everything out got you it sounds sounds really good so i don't just let you know oh let's see here Dwight H little had to feed tarmen filpy all his lines because he had trouble remembering them well what the fuck are you doing on a movie if you can't remember your lines now i'm gonna fire them and move on to some little shields oh shit Jamie Lee Curtis reportedly had no interest in reprising a role as lory strode so the fourth film's leading female character Jamie Lloyd was developed as lory's daughter and replacement lory herself was supposedly killed in a car accident 11 months before the events of the fourth film and also reportedly also she was supposed to be it wasn't supposed to be uh Jamie Lloyd let's see what it was that's supposed to be uh where is it here Brittany Lloyd i have no idea she's supposed to be Brittany Lloyd and they're gonna call her Briti which i think i would have been stupid as fuck yeah for sure but they went with Jamie as an homage to Jamie Lee Curtis so Donald Pleasance was 69 years old at the time of this film's production Jesus he was 69 so how well that made him in his last in in Halloween 6 that was that was 95 wasn't it so yeah he would have been like 74 or 75 shit damn two scenes in the script were never filmed were to show Michael following Rachel Jamie and Lindsey to the discount mark like he did in Halloween 78 and Rachel getting ice cream with Jamie as they talk about getting adopted by her parents so i guess she was adopted film states at Jamie is seven years old but Daniel Harris was 11 years old at the time i thought she was 10 you know he said three different ages so i don't know how she was well at the beginning when she's having a nightmare the Rachel comes in and says something about being seven years old or something so well let's see here having another character wearing a mask and costume identical or similar to Michael's was used in Halloween 2 Halloween 4 the return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5 revenge of Michael Myers and Halloween resurrection that's sort of cool well i mean you know he's a famous serial killer by now so i can see there would be a lot of copycats yeah film marked the first time that director H Dwight H Little shot a film under union rules he was previously known as the non-union director who often used amateur actors huh i wonder what else he's filmed before that i didn't really see nothing on him some TV show producer some TV shows and shit so that's about it film was shot during march of 1988 practical effects were used to create the autumn like scenery like we talked about earlier such as uh so that's why there wasn't old man that would have been chilly up there in march up in the mountains there or whatever it is oh let's see here film mark first time an actress Ellie Cornell played a major role in film she'd previously played a bit part in the film married to the mob which suit served as her film debut and a lot of this stuff we've already talked about so it's about all i got so what's your thoughts on this carl always loved halloween four i think i still say if we were i think how i rated them they in one four and six are my favorites i've always felt that way i still like it i still like to watch halloween four halloween five is a whole different story i don't think i could stand watching that movie again i guess we were to review it but it's just not a good movie to me yeah um i think in this in the halloween world one yep four six and i don't mind halloween seven the h20 but i guess this would be ranked third for me uh the score is good the acting's good i don't care about the micro mask because he took it from the discount mark the characters are good i have no complaints about this movie at all so this based on i would give it a 4.5 really recommend yeah i love halloween four i like six better and of course the originals five over a five star film yeah i have no no issues with halloween four anything about it is it's just a there's very little silliness in it which halloween five unfortunately does yeah yeah for sure i never i remember i've told you and you always look at me crazy i'm not a big fan of halloween two i just find that movie long and drawn out so this is better than halloween two to me by a lot so okay maybe if if they to cut the burn scars all over maybe we could just say halloween two didn't exist in this world but that would have made lorry not the sister of michael if they had done that because remember we don't find that out the halloween two so this director's talking a lot of rubbish but that's my rankings 4.5 i'm not changing okay uh i never seen this until it came out on VHS i never seen this in the theater when it came out oh i did i was as excited as hell to see it 88 where the hell was i in 88 i would have been in the 10th grade in 88 and that's when we started going to i think we into our rated movies i think we had just moved to california in the 88 for the first time and uh didn't really know my way around or anything there so i don't know no movies no movies really so you saw the exorcist when you were five years old but you did not see halloween four that's kind of crazy in the theater now that's what i mean and yeah yeah well plus money was tight moving to california because it's expensive as fuck out there it even was back in 1988 so you're just making I'm not as big a fan of this as you are i do like this movie but i don't really think it holds up well anymore to be honest with you i think i think it holds up pretty damn good uh but we've talked about this before i you like halloween two a lot better than i like it so we have major disagreements when it comes to these two movies yeah one one the fan of the mask uh he got it from discount mark i don't care they could have kept at least looking somewhat similar this totally looks totally different and just you just you're just a pickler about shit if it don't look like the original movie just like you hate any frankenstein they don't look like boris karloff you don't like any michael but don't look like the halloween one million shatner don post mask what do i say man i'm nostalgic what do i say very nostalgic much credit to that you're very traditionalist and nostalgic on your horror movies but uh even i think they could have did the end a little better on this too you know seem to mind the halloween six masks but that's in story i think they could have did a little better with the ending on this uh for sure well they just killed they just killed him i mean he dies and all of them at the end well he didn't die though well we thought he was dead as you see in halloween five if they had decided not to release halloween five then we would have said well that that michael maras got shot to death and died and they was never seen again exactly i mean look at halloween h20 they cut his fucking head off and he still comes back so yeah he always dies except for these fucking remakes i don't know what the hell going on with that i don't either halloween forever what's that one called were they evil dies to not i don't think he died that one day halloween kills yeah he didn't die there so uh he just walked away i just actually watched that the other night by by chance it was on i turned it up kept watching it right that's the best of those three yeah for sure uh but anyway back to this yeah he's still on very good very good score good with the score how worth always does a good job especially when you know when he's with john carpenter but he what john carpenter had nothing to do with the the score on this at all so he always does a good job with his scores um yeah i just i just i watched it last night and just just didn't hold up the same for me as it has you know so i'm gonna give it a four that's as high as i can give it and i don't think you would have gave it that unless i would have gave it a 4.5 i think you really want to give it a 3.5 well i suggest watching it if nobody's if you haven't watched this this film uh you know cinematography and stuff and stuff was good in it you know that are some really cool it's probably the you've seen it so many damn times yeah that's true too that's true too i probably honestly when i watch it it gets sort of like oh come on let's get this over with so yeah it uh it we've seen i've seen this movie like a hundred and fifty thousand times i'm sure more than h5 not far but h5 brings in the the man in black at least so and the thorn thing yeah which i don't know how that derived from i don't know it just showed up yeah well it's the logo of our show so i guess the thorns good yeah i like the thorns and i want to actually get that out as a tattoo so on my back hurt i'm sitting on the stool all right well that's all we got for uh Halloween for the return of Michael Myers sorry it's such a short shorter episode but it's not we had to throw something in for today's you know so uh thanks for watching it's not a short show it's not a short show it's not your walk why is he out here oh you got him outside he's a big fucker man i didn't think he i didn't think he was that big i had derrick here and i thought this is the way i'm going to get this damn thing outside probably is to um getting moved yesterday so you got moved oh you're walking back into the garage you're walking back into the work i gotta go back to work all right oh you got some creepy cross strum up yeah you've been telling me this thing has to be get done and graphing at me so it's basically about done i just got a finish up some stuff i don't think we're gonna have any leaking anymore in this thing all right so i should have done the show out here it would have been a better better atmosphere too humid inside there man all right everybody thanks for watching listening check us out on all the socials hit that like and subscribe and we will talk to you next week who knows what we'll have in store for you check out the haunted house too w w w dot count for obby dot com somebody who's asking about donations we've never had donate yeah i know you're losing signal man stavele everybody do you know what today is do you know the date every day i look at myself in the mirror and every day i remember you let them take it out of here now he's escaped and who this day would come who brings you back here to clean you Michael Myers 10 years ago he tried to kill or his throat now he wants her daughter wherever she is that little child is in more danger I has been locked up since before she was born he's never laid eyes on you're talking about him as if he were a
