Twitch.tv/ESP and 1000 Chicago as the Bears cap. The feet the Panthers by a score of 36 to 10 and the Bears. They're largest win since defeating the Giants. About 29-3 during week 17 of the 2021 season. Big win, big spot and you move on from here. Johnny I feel like I need to smoke a cigarette. That's how good it feels to have a quarterback look like that. We have not had a quarterback look like that and you could give me all the best games that our quarterbacks in recent memory have played. Whether it was Mitch for six touchdowns against Tampa or Justin had that big game when they beat the commanders in Washington or some cutler stuff. Guess what? That's what a pro quarterback looks like. Like the touchdown to DJ Moore right before halftime. The second one where Shay and I were just watching the tape where he looks to the right, the safety bites. You see him take off thinking Keenan Allen on a... This water would call a skinny post and then bam, right back down the middle. Gotcha. Perfect throw where if DJ doesn't catch it, it's an incomplete pass. You don't worry about an interception there because he put it in that spot. So great job with his eyes, great job with his arm, great catch by DJ Moore. Thanks for coming 30 consecutive points later. Bears win. Yeah. It's a great rhythm for Caleb Williams and the Bears offense. It's a game that you had to win against the hapless Carolina Panthers ball club. But the point is the gap is that this is the most comfortable that Caleb Williams has been with the offense since he's been here. The defense is the same way as the most comfortable the defense has been this season as well. But what I loved is that there won't be any controversy this week about the offensive line because the offensive line did the job to be able to open those holes for DeAndre Swift, to open those holes for Roshan Johnson. And then from there, just being able to connect his receivers cap. It's not like he was trying to throw 80 yard bombs every time. He's just trying to get comfortable with the offense. Here's DJ Moore. He's wide open. Hit him on a 34 yarder. Here's Cole Komet. He's open for a 26 yarder. Here's DeAndre Swift. Just give it to him and he'll go 42 yards. It's just getting comfortable. Colored by the numbers offense. Hit your weapons. Keep the offense moving. And that's exactly what we saw yesterday. It's exactly what we were looking forward to all season. But this is the best that he's looked without question. Without a doubt. I want you to remember something you and I talked about last year. It was late in the season when it was obvious they weren't going to the playoffs. And did I not say to you and you could curve? See that light everybody there down there? These are light coming. That's a train coming this way and you people have no idea what's about to hit you. That's Caleb Williams incoming. No, we're going to trade the pit. No, that's your guy right there. I know it's five games. There'll be hiccups. There's going to be a Monday. We're going to come here and go. He looked horrible. That's what happens with young quarterbacks. We got our guy. That dude is a stud. And everyone's going to call it. It was Caroline and Cap. Guess what? It was an NFL team with guys coming after him. And he did what he had to do when he had to do it. Big throws in big spots. He ran for 34 yards on five carries. And I felt like every one of the yards was important. And it was super cool, man. To see Tyson Major take three knees at the end. It was like, wow, we got this one put away early. Yes. It was awesome. So hats off. They get on a jet tonight. 7.30 tonight. Wheels up for London. I remember when Negi was here, I think we flew out like on Thursday night. Yes. He said, no, we get in play and get out. And now they've done a lot of studying. And Iberflu said, hey, man, it's not me. The people that do this for living poles and his people. They did a deep study with sleep experts. All of it. The best way to do it is to get there early in the week. They get their day off tomorrow. Do some sightseeing. Then lock in on their time schedule. And then you get a whole week off with the bye week. So super cool. So good for the Chicago Bears with their victory against the Panthers. But to lock in on Caleb Williams. And I'll go along with what you're saying about Caleb Williams is the Carolina Panthers. Has anyone seen the National Football League? Anything can happen. Correct. It's football. Correct. I mean, listen, the Carolina Panthers, they're a football team too. And just because they've had their struggles doesn't mean that the Bears could just roll over them. That was not an automatic. Because even with the Rams game, there are some things that we talked about last week, Cap, that the Bears still need to improve on. And by the way, I'm sure that the coaches look at this film against Carolina and say, hey, we can get better at this. We can tighten the screws here or there. But I just want to give a stat that I'm going to be given all week until you're tired of it. Regarding Caleb Williams against the Blitz. Because against the Panthers yesterday, Caleb Williams on 31% of his dropbacks for the third game this season facing the Blitz. At least 30% of the time, he wins 8 for 10 for 128 yards in a touchdown. So under pressure, he's getting that ball out three seconds or less and boom, hitting his targets. 8 for 10, 126 yards in a touchdown against the Blitz. So that means that you are starting to graduate from just, hey, here's a quarterback facing pressure versus, hey, they're coming at you. You know how to get the ball to commit. You know how to get the ball to swift. That is improvement from week to week. He had six different receivers for multiple catches. It's not like one catch here or there. Six different guys caught multiple passes. The defense comes to eat. The Kevin Byard interception. Tom Thayer on the ESPN 1000 home of the Bears broadcast said, that might be the best interception I've ever seen a Bear player make. Like he went up high point at that ball. It was a hell of a play. He's also the leading active interceptor among defensive backs or safeties. And I believe he's fourth among all active players all time in interceptions. Guys, a beast, man. So I guess my point is that with the Colts and the Rams and the Panthers, I guess these defensive coordinators reach these three teams feel like he's young quarterback was put pressure on him and Caleb Williams has been able to master it. That is progress. That means that you're going in the right direction. Colts Rams and Panthers say it's a young quarterback. If we give him some heat, then he'll go backwards and get sacks or he'll throw interception. Now, Caleb Williams actually has been really good at being able to handle the pressure so far. We'll see what happens against the Jaguars on Sunday. Every week, it's a test. Yep. It's a cool business trip, but that's what it is. And I want to ask Coach Eber Flus, Matt. Eber Flus joins us at 8/20 today. I would like to ask him. It's a cool experience. A lot of these guys have never been to England. I know Eber Flus said yesterday to the game. He went to Italy for vacation this summer. I've done that same trip. There is a factor of adjustment with your body clock. It's real. Like people who haven't made that trip, they don't understand it. You come back and you're exhausted. Now you're going to get the week off with your bi-week. That's perfect timing. But how do you balance, yeah, I want you guys to enjoy this experience. It's a long season. This is out of the norm. We're not going to Indianapolis where we get in, eat, film, get ready, play, go home. We're going to London. It'll be a ton of Bears fans. A ton. A friend of mine who works at the airport texting me, I say, you cannot believe how many Bears fans are already here flying to London. They're going to spend the whole week there. Super, super cool experience. So how do you balance that by you got to get on that plane next Sunday night? One and all this week. Boy, we travel well. These charter franchises cap. No matter what, they find time in the schedule. These are not retirees either. I think that a lot of these people are hard-working men and women that say, my Bears are going to go someplace. I want to see them. Yeah, they save their money. They're like, hey, this year's trip, we're going to London to see the Bears. Crazy. Super cool, man. They don't care who the opponent is, it's just to be able to support the Bears abroad, wherever they are. And of course, we have our listeners and callers from the UK that I'm sure you're going to try to find a way to get into that stadium to check out the Bears. That shows you how strong the Bears have been over the years cap. Obviously, it starts with the 85 Bears where that Super Bowl shuffle song is not a Chicago song. It's everywhere. Everyone's into it. And then when we get calls from Mexico on this show, it calls from the UK. It just shows you how strong, how passionate the Bears fan is everywhere. And it shows you that all these years where they were horrible, how much people still out there, please let my Bears be good. So, again, it's a work in progress. They're a long, long way from where we need them to be. But this kid is developing right before your eyes. He is. Yes. Just embrace it, man. We've got a quarterback. So you're saying that the Bears and Kelop Williams are chasing greatness? They're chasing greatness. I see. And they're making a little progress on that journey up the greatness mountain. There's a greatness mountain. There is. When you get to the top, there's this super cool thing. It's called a Lombardi trophy. And when you get to the top of the greatness mountain, there's a trophy you get to take home. And it's yours. And then you go all the way back to the bottom and you try the climb again. But this time, people are ready for you. Cap, are there like a mountain sweatshirts and t-shirts I can get chasing greatness mountains? Yes. 100%. Oh, that's coming too. They're in design right now. Just wait until the break, folks. He'll be right on the phone. Kidding those mountain t-shirts. Bill. Yeah. It's a little early. I just came up with an idea with hoodie. Greatness mountain. I need a mountain. Quarterback with a bushy beard. Climbing up there. Okay. Leading his minions. I was just asking. I just said, that's something new. So I just wondered like, can I get that merchandise? That's it. Bill, about the recap. Can I be able to get that? Someday. Okay. 3-1-2-3-2-E-S-P-N. 3-3-2-3-7-7-6-R phone number. Let's get your thoughts about the bears that are victory against the Carolina Panthers. What did you like most about the bears victory against the Panthers? Still to come? Some thoughts from Caleb Williams, the quarterback for the Bears and your thoughts, Bears fans. On that. Captain Jay Hood Morning Show. Captain Jay Hood, I'm back. Appreciate you guys. I listened to you streaming on the ESPN 1,000 apps. Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. 8-0-6. Don't still get people lined up. He's got trips to the right, back to his left. Low snap. Takes looking to throw. Pressure coming. He hangs in there. Low deep down the middle of the field. Diving intercepted. Kevin Byard at the 34-yard line of the Bears, defending Jonathan Mingo. Fear to push off. And Mingo, but it was fired, became the receiver. And he swiped his 29th career interception. One of the best since he's entered the league. And the Bears have taken the ball away for a second time. Jeff and Tom on the call right here on the home of the Bears. ESPN 1,000 has the Bears. We meet the Panthers via score of 36-10. We're talking about it. Did you get your chance to watch the game? We're losing to it right here on the home of the Bears. ESPN 3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. We'll hear from Mattie Reflus, the head coach for the Bears, coming up at 8-20, right here on the home of the Bears. The cap is just, you know, watching the Bears be able to score. Put on about 20 spot in the second quarter. Just everything just worked so well for the Bears offensively. And again, it just seemed like the Panthers were just like a step slow or two steps behind. We've seen this before, right? If you're the linebackers of the secondary and the ball gets there, it just seemed like the Panthers are always late. Won't say business decisions. That might be a little bit strong. But it just seemed like the Bears were just on it and knew exactly where they want to place the football yesterday. They just looked after the run by Chuba Hubbard. Yeah, Chuba Hubbard gets that run for a touchdown at 7-0. And then I thought, again, you could give me the halftime, right before halftime drive. You could give me a second-half drive. But I thought the drive that was most critical right before, right after the Chuba Hubbard run was Caleb taking them down the field and getting 7 to DJ Moore. And, A, you're down 7-0. You've already gone 3-0 once. If you go 3-0 again and somehow, someway, they score and you go, "Oh, God." Two scores in a hole, 10-14. Not good. Now that it boobers her out. Instead, he takes him right down the field. And then he hits DJ who makes a great, great cut along the sideline, bounces it back inside, gets the touchdown. Everybody relaxed. Quiet. We're good. And now you score 30 unanswered. Ballgame over. Yes. Because that first drive cap, that first down throw behind Keaton Allen, like, "Do I do this again?" It's right there. You got to throw behind Keaton Allen. And then the second down is a 3-yard run to swift and then a third down sack. That's no good. And so now you're watching, like, we're going back to this again. You got to miss the wide receiver wide open there with you. And so that was great. That touchdown, by the way, by Hubbard that you mentioned, is one of the few times I've seen the Bears defense flat-footed. It's very odd because this way he was able to burrow that hole through and, like, nobody's getting them. They have a really good offensive line. In fact, Carolina spends more on their offensive line than 95% of the NFL. So they have good players up there. They got him a crease. And once he made "Bired Miss"... See you later. Thanks for coming. Everybody didn't get him. And he ends up in the end zone. That's why I thought the drive was so important right out of that at Caleb Delivered. Like an answer right after that touchdown by Carolina. Guys, relax. Yeah, we're good. And then boom. And then DJ with a really good route as he drags across, catches it. He's getting to the sideline and it was like a basketball jump stop like a little jump cut. Boom! Back up inside. Make a little hesitation. Move it to goal line in the end zone. Here we go. As much as people want to see this in Game 1 of the Chicago Bears, again, we say the same things that people can hear what they want to hear, but I've been very consistent with this as you well know because you're with me every day. That for a young quarterback, you have to learn. Game after game. Eventually the pauses, hide the negatives, get better every week. One of the criticisms of Caleb Williams' cap was that he wasn't moving the pocket enough. Okay, so what we saw is in that first half, I really like the way that Caleb moved the pocket, going to his right, finding DJ Moore for those 23 yards. Remember that? He runs to his right and finds the open receiver. So there's an opportunity for him to get the ball, move the pocket and be able to connect to DJ Moore. And you know, one thing that we did not mention all last week, I don't know if this is on DJ Moore's mind, but the revenge factor of trying to put on a show against his former team. The whole thought last week was that there was a disconnect between DJ Moore and Caleb Williams, which I think is completely false. I don't think that there was a rift or anger between the two. They were just trying to figure out how they could be on the same page. Well, that's all. Remember last week somebody tweeted, "Look, he's sitting by himself on the bench, sulking. He's mad." Yeah. After he crossed the touchdown yesterday, guess where he was sitting? By himself. By himself. And somebody, I was talking to somebody who was around there, they said, "He does that after everything. He likes to be alone in his headspace, had nothing to do with Caleb." But of course that didn't fit everybody's narrative in social media world. It was such a non-storey. I know we addressed it some on the show last week, but it's just about how we did. Yeah, we did. It's just about how the team can gel, both sides of the football, correcting staff. Everyone can communicate because it's so early in the season, but everyone's trying to find a rift. Hopefully that it will get on first take on one of these shows on FS1. It just wasn't going to happen. DJ Moore, I think Sylvie had circled it on his Twitter of DJ Moore sitting alone. It's what he does. As long as he's productive, I don't care. It's what he does. DJ not Sylvie. Yeah, yes. I think that also, he also does that. Swinging on his sad swing. You have the swing of Sock, right? Yeah. No, he called it. He sits alone there too. But DJ Moore, five receptions, give 105 yards and a couple of touchdowns, was exactly what the doctor ordered. Caleb Williams talking about how the offense took a major step. When you're able to be efficient down the field, and obviously we had to cold down the sideline, a couple of screens and things like that, and playing well with each other, a short pass is good runs, you know, check downs, and then obviously opening it up and being able to hit a couple of deep balls. I think it won limits kind of what defenses can do in a sense of, you know, when you're hitting on different things, now the defense is just trying to scramble and, you know, trying to figure it out. And when you're being consistent, how we wear today with the run game, and obviously with the past game, and hitting some explosive, you know, some explosive plays, it does, you know, does good for the whole football team. It keeps us on the football field, being efficient, and then when you have those big plays, the momentum swings and things like that, it's great for the football team and having those momentum swings and being able to keep it with the team that we have in defense, the special teams, and offense, you know, us playing together and playing like that, you know, you're going to win a lot of games. Yeah, I'm sure that taking on the Panthers defense, especially that second quarter cap, it just probably opened up the world of possibilities for him as a quarterback saying, you know, when I got time, I could be able to collect everybody. It was really interesting. First of all, I thought the offensive line had a good day. They did. Bill Murray's in there and Matt Pryor. Pryor, the keys defending his guy, Rocha Jefferson got punched yesterday, did nothing. Yes. Got punched. That's the second time this year. Mm-hmm. Remember in the Houston game? Same thing. That punch on the sideline, he wasn't even playing. Staying it over there, bam. I'm like, why is he getting punched again? And then Matt-- He must be a blank talker for him to get punched twice. I guess, I don't know. But then Pryor came over and defended his honor. And then here came 52. And just blasted Pryor. And Pryor's a big man now. Six, seven, three, thirty. Like he's a monster. Down he goes. And then they kick Pryor out of the game. 52 got a 15 or 10 yard-- Was it a 15 yard penalty? Yeah, 15 yard penalty. Mm-hmm. Somebody on the bear's got one as well. And then Pryor and J.C. Horn got kicked out. Yes. So, yeah, got a little nasty there at the end, a little frustration. But the Panther operation is just a long way from where it needs to be. Yes. I like their coach. He has a great rep in the league, Dave Canales. Mm-hmm. And he and Waldring used to work together. And I guess he and Iberflus have a relationship, so they just have a long, long way to go. Yes, folks. It gives you the old memories of Andy Dalton. That's the Andy, I know. Barely throwing it over 10 yards. Yeah, that's him. Not trying to extend plays. Just nickel and diamond it down the field. Hand the ball off. That's Andy Dalton. Correct. He keeps in the ball game now. He keeps in the ball game. But he's looking for like Instagram plays or a spectacular splash play and doesn't-- that's not Andy Dalton. They showed the graphic during the game. Like he could barely get it past 15 yards. Just-- it's just not in him anymore. Yes, sack four times. I believe hit 10. German Dexter, happy birthday. Turn 23 on Saturday. Mm-hmm. He is the leading sacker of an interior lineman in the Nashville bubbling. He is four in five weeks. That guy transformed himself. And we talked about this at length. How-- he trained-- he said like a marathoner. He did the wide receiver room testing. He said, I'm going to train like those guys so that I don't get tired. He's a beast. Yeah. An absolute beast. So that is a huge, huge player development kudos for that staff. When we asked the question many times, besides Montes sweat, who can be able to make a difference on the defense? We're starting to get names on a regular basis now. Dexter, Billings, the Marcus Walker. There was a sandwich sack that we saw on Dalton on Sunday. Yeah, it was Walker and Dexter, right? Yeah. They had the sandwich? Yeah. Yeah. So, Cap, every time we're asking who else is going to make a difference on that defensive line, we're getting answers. Every week, it's revealing a self-shay of guys that could make a difference. If you had told me pre-season that there would be multiple occasions of me watching the Bears and going, "Oh, my God, Andrew Billings, I would have never believed you. He's unreal." That's why Paul's extended him last year, remember? Yeah. He would never get him at the price he got him at. His development as a pass rusher is incredible. I don't want to say the hot take unlike anything I've ever seen, but it is a little marvelous. How did this happen? And that is where he plays. That is what Flus says is the key to our football team defensively up front. It's not having the two best ends. That's a great thing to have. But Montes Swett's getting doubled. And guess what? He's getting pressured, Andy Dalton, from the interior of our line. Whoa! Dexter. And as you said, Billings. And then there's Demarcus Walker. And then they had a corner blitz where Kyla Gordon just lit his ass up. Yes. Down. And I know people are going, like, you watched the game yesterday. Oh, well, it's Carolina. Let's do it against a good team. The one thing I would say when you're talking about the pressure that the interior of this defensive line is getting, that Carolina O line so far this season has not allowed pressures. Yes. And you got through them. Yeah, they have one of the, again, I said a little bit ago, they spend more on their offensive line than 95% of the NFL. They've got a good O line. Yes. So they're building a foundation there. And for those that say, well, it's just Carolina, I'm not going to call, or I don't think it's a big deal. Again, this is not trying to determine who's going to be in the national championship playoff and college football. They beat an NFL team. Imagine if we come in here on this Bears Monday and they lost against Carolina. That's likely to. And this NFL, anything could happen. I'm just glad that the Bears took care of their business at Soldier Field and they beat the hell out of Carolina. That's not a given. Nothing's a given anymore in this league. Bears also have the longest win streak at home in the NFL right now, active eight consecutive games. Seven now eight, right? Which is great. I mean, it's great. Hoodie to your point. Look around this league yesterday. How many teams are outclassing their opponent? Very few. And in fact, there are more cases of the New York Giants beating Seattle. Hello. Who had that Seattle at three and one coming back after the after the Lions game and the dead New York Giants. The Dead New York Giants walk in there and beat them. Yeah. How did our picks go? How did our picks go? How did our picks go? I had a bad time in the NFL. I did well in college. You did. He's me. I know. Shout out Washington Huskies taking care of business. Yeah. So I mean, that's the whole point of it though. So it's not about whether or not you're impressed with the win or not. Because again, a lot of people like to delve into the negative and what the Bears aren't. How about what the Bears are this morning? They're a winner. Back to back wins and that's a good thing. Well said. That's what it comes out to. One, two in a row, got to three and two. Now get to London and find a way to go one and all this week. You're trying to get better behind a rookie quarterback. That's it. You'd rather win this game than lose it. It's common sense. Let's go. And even though mom used to say common sense is uncommon, that is common sense. 3-1-2-3-2. Very good. You just got a shot out from your guy. ESPN 3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number on this Bears Victory Monday. The Bears defeat the Panthers refining out your thoughts. What impressed you most about the victory? Your call's next on Captain Jay Hood. The Chicago Bay is a trash. Checkmate 1-6, land here suppression on target. That's why I see him in my shot. Shot or no shot with Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and ESPN Chicago F. That's why I see him in my shot. Good morning and welcome in to the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on ESPN Chicago F with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you on this Bears Victory Monday. Don't forget we're here for medieval clues coming up at 8-20. But first shot or no shot with Shane Orland. Good morning boys on a Bears Victory Monday feels very good today. Caleb Williams 300 yards passing again. How are we feeling? Feeling good man. We got a quarter back here again. There's going I'm going to say it again. There will be days where we're like oh God. How did he throw that pick? That happens man. But it's a process. It's a process. It's a process. But we got a guy. We finally have our guy. Yeah. Again you just like incremental progress week in and week out. And hopefully that continues against Jacksonville. And then you have your Biden. You feel really good about the ball club and where things are. But again you got to keep moving forward every week getting better. In this NFL you can have momentum but it could just be taken away from you just like that. Because of how wild this league is. College End Pro quite frankly but the NFL in particular. That's why I told you I thought and I want to ask coach that I thought the drive to get the first touchdown to DJ was so important. It was paramount. You cannot go three and out. They score and now. Oh God. We don't score. We turn it over or we go out three and out again. They come down and score again. Now you're like oh boy. They're booing. Everyone. You know Titans. All right Jay what do we have for a shot of no shot. I'll just say bring an a game kid. All right let's get started. Jervon Dexter has arrived. He has four sacks in five games. He's been an absolute pressure machine. Still ranks near the very top among all defensive tackles in football in pressure rate and pass rush win rate. He's been awesome and continued his hot streak yesterday with a fumble recovery four quarterback hits and a sack. You can go ahead and compare that to the quote unquote best defensive tackle in the draft. The same year as Dravon Dexter Jalen Carter who currently does not have a sack in four games this season. Ryan polls may have yet another winner on the defensive side of the ball out of the draft shot or no shot. We can forget about Dravon Dexter being good. He might be a pro bowler. That's a shot. He's got four sacks in five weeks. He spent the offseason training. He said like a wide receiver and a marathoner and got his body completely remade yet his 23rd birthday on Saturday. This dude's got if he stays healthy a decade of dominant football eight years of dominant football ahead of him. Yeah I believe that's a shot at this particular time. Cap because we're watching him be a difference maker in that defensive line. We wondered coming into the season besides Montes sweat. Who else could be able to be a difference maker on the line? I think again every week someone's popping up to be able to be a difference maker for this defense. It's not necessarily about having eight or nine sacks in a game. It's just about being able to put pressure on the quarterback and we've seen a lot of that with the Bears so far. So yeah I think that is definitely a shot. That's a guy we were looking forward to seeing how he could develop and guess what so far so good. So far so good. It feels like this is what Iber Flus needed for this defense to really go to the top is that engine in the middle of it and Gervon Dexter becoming that guy not having to spend 20 million dollars to go find him. Like I was upset they didn't get Christian Wilkins but if Gervon Dexter is going to play like this and Andrew Billings is going to play like this you didn't need him. Correct. That's why free agency is not the panacea for everything that ails you. It's just not like when you overpay for Christian Wilkins. What do you do to the development of a guy who's 22 years of age before Saturday? Got to let these guys play man. All right everybody can go ahead and take a deep sigh of relief with the offense and especially with Caleb Williams after three weeks of national conversation that the Bears selected the wrong quarterback they should have taken Jaden Daniels. Caleb Williams looked like a bus to diva whatever people were calling him. He is put together two straight games to quiet the haters. The game against the Rams wildly efficient with the touchdown passed to DJ Moore and then yesterday big yardage day going over 300 yards and a dominant win over the Panthers getting the two touchdowns and posting a passer rating north of 120. Shot or no shot. Caleb Williams has put himself back in the mix for rookie of the year. That's a shot. Absolute shot. He keeps taking steps Jonathan. He's always been in that conversation. It depends on how many yards that he gets and what his production is. I just think that looking at what he's been able to do so far I've always thought that he was in the conversation. Will it continue to be in the conversation at this point in time? Yes. It's up to him. It's totally up to him. It's totally up the offensive coordinator and the line. The weapons are there. He just has to execute it just like he has the last couple of weeks. The Rams game that we saw on Sunday tells me that the arrow is pointing up for Caleb Williams. You know Shae and I know that all these talk shows and these football shows and podcasts need to be able to have content and things to talk about. But you know from my standpoint Caleb Williams was not the dregs of society as far as the quarterback positions because he was never the worst. You know what the worst is? That's to Sean Watson. You want to see someone that's really struggling at the quarterback position? That's struggling. When he comes to Caleb Williams it's just that he needs to be on the same page. It wasn't like he's getting buried behind the line of the scrimmage every single game because that wasn't the case. It just wasn't a connection with DJ Moore, with his receivers, with Shane Waldron. As you see the last couple of games you could see the assemblants of his days at USC where he's connecting to his weapons. So he was never the worst. You know what the worst is? Cleveland. That's where you can find the worst. Oh God. Can you imagine having a... He's owed 150 million more to Sean Watson. Their team is horrible. And this is not a coaching thing. Like Stafanst, he's one coach of the year twice. That guy can coach. But they've done a horrible job with that to Sean Watson decision. Well it was always laughable, hoodie, that three weeks into a player's career. You're going, you selected the wrong quarterback and you... He's a bust. You should have taken... It's three weeks into the career. Like I get it if we see a full season of Caleb Williams looking like Bryce Young. And Jayden Daniels is what he is and you want to have the national conversation. Did the Bears take the wrong quarterback? Yes. Three weeks in. What are we doing? Like he stinks. Like he'll never get it. You know what doesn't get it? Bryce Young doesn't get it. Because you know why? It wasn't just by a week. It's just watching a season of it. And you're saying boy he needs some help. Not just coaching off it's a lot but just he needs help. Correct. So I'll just say that's why I always think about the great Jeff Dickerson when we were doing shows together and I told him I said we're never going to be on first take. You understand that right? Like we're never going to be on first take but we could be on mile takes. Correct. That's like we're never going to have the... I said but we could be on mile takes. That mile take would be watch every week. Make your determination for that particular week of what's happening with this quarterback, that player, that team and then went to next week. And then commented on from that. But these big bold declarations and these big bold opinions about Caleb Williams being awful just based on a few games is just two three hundred yard games already. It's unbelievable. He's over at almost eleven hundred yards through five games. Like let's keep going man. That's all it is. I wanted four thousand. Let's go. Alright Shay what else do we have? Shane Waldron was pretty much public enemy number one after the first three weeks of the season. People were blaming all of the offensive struggles on Waldron. The play calling was called absurd. Now they've put two solid performances together with this offense. A good rushing attack against Los Angeles and a very complete balanced offensive onslaught yesterday against Carolina. At one point Caleb and the Bears had more scoring drives than Caleb had in completions. It feels like the heat is off of the Bears offensive coordinator as the scheme settles in and starts to click. So shot or no shot. The Waldron slander of the first three weeks was a bit undeserved. That's a no shot. Now it was deserved. And you know I was deserved because the players talked to them. When you have a team meeting with some of the key elements of the offense and the offense according to this early in the season. No it's warranted because you want to get everyone the same page. Absolutely. And even as a fan on the outside looking in cap you say you're the head coach of the offense. Why does the offense look so stagnant? Why do you make those calls in the Colts game? Why do you do that? It's because Waldron has to adjust to the talent that's in front of him. He has to realize he's not in Seattle anymore. That's the whole thing. You have a rookie quarterback in which you never coached a rookie quarterback before. You got all these weapons offensively. You got to figure out how they can all get the football. You got to make sure the offensive lines on the set. All these things happening. So it's warranted. Absolutely. When you struggle in a big boy market like this you will get the slings and arrows and it's deserved. Absolutely it's deserved. It's not that he should be fired. Be like we heard before. But it's like hey Shane these veterans in the room are telling you you can coach us harder. No question. You said shot or no. How was the question phrased the last? Shot or no shot. Well the Waldron slander the first three weeks was a bit undeserved. No shot. No shot. It was deserved. But he's exactly right. When you run Kaleel Herbert for a wildcat. Kaleel Herbert to the two. Kaleel Herbert to the one. And then a speed option with the Andre Swift. Yeah no. That was deserved criticism. And he learned from it. But just the idea that they came to the coach and just said hey you got to coach us harder. We don't want to talk coach. That's all. But that's a good thing though. Great. I love that his doors open and they have that type of autonomy to do something like that. And he's telling and by the way last two weeks, hands not shaking. Calm hands. Have you noticed that? Correct. He's holding the play sheet like a man. He called the other day and said tell hoodie it was windy in there. Plus not windy. He was nursed. Shaky. That's what he was. Oh god. You shaky bastard. That's what happened cap. Uncomfortable. Oh god. What if I call the wrong play? I'm going to kick my ass in the morning. Correct. But notice calm. The calmness of Joe. He's right coming into the real life. You got the plays right here. That's right. Blood pressure 120 over radio was fantastic. Let's go. That's when you have confidence. Not so confident the first few weeks though. The shaking play sheet. That's it. So now I think that that was warranted. Absolutely. All right. Shaky can you get in one more? Yeah. The bears and packers are currently tied at the bottom of the NFC North. They're tied at three and two after the packers beat the Rams yesterday in Los Angeles. One problem. Packers have not looked great to me so far this year. The defense is very takeaway happy, but they've also been gotten when they've played against good offenses, particularly Philly and Minnesota. And Jordan Love has yet to look like the guy we saw at the end of last year. Instead looking more like the guy we saw at the start of last year, more often than not, shot or no shot. The bears are better than the packers right now. Did you say gotten? Yeah. That word. Yeah. Is it gotten hungry over the last hour? It's okay. The bears are better than the packers. Shot or no shot? It's the packers, man. Shot. Shot. Really? We also have the better quarterback. He just has to keep proving it. Okay. Defence two? Our defense is better than their defense. Okay. They have a better offensive line. I think we should probably, yeah, that was going to say that we should break it down this way. Packers have a better offensive line to protect Jordan Love. Yes. We have a better running game. Their running game is good too. Josh Jacobs is a stud. Yes. Our defense is better. Okay. Our punter is better. Our place kickers and their place kicker both are, their guys are rookie, I think. Uh-huh. Our guys proven. So, I like their play caller better. Yes. The floor. Mm-hmm. So, it sounds like there's a lot more check marks for the packers. No. You sure? Count them up. Play caller. My quarterback, I took my wide receiver room. I take my tight end room. I take my defense. I take my punter. I gave them the play caller. They probably have the best of the group of running backs, Josh Jacobs. Yeah. And their offensive line. We win. Okay. Shay, is that accurate? The way he lays it out there? I mean, the head coach means everything. Play caller and head coach. Their head coach is more proven than our guy. That's just them. We're going to talk to Matt. That's not a shot at Matt. That's praise for the other Matt. That's right. That's our lead. I just call him Peter Lefalure. Uh-huh. Remember him from Dodgeball? Uh-huh. Yeah. I do think defensively the Bears are much better than the Packers. No question. And that kind of makes the difference for me. Yeah. Is offensively, I think the Bears can close the gap. Packers offense has been about middle of the pack this season. It has not been special. Bears offense getting better. And the Bears defense I think is just significantly better than the Packers and significantly better than most teams. I kind of feel like the Packers might finish last in this division. Uh-huh. Oh, gosh. That would be absolute greatest. And by the way, that might be a photo finish to the bottom. The way things this is going on. Everybody could be 500 against one another. Who knows? In this division? Holy smokes. To be competitive. To be clear, last place is like 9 and 8 in the NFC North. That ain't bad. Yeah. That will still be like respectable at the bottom of this division. In the NFC North. Correct. That's all. It's a shot because of the things that just laid out there for me. Again, they have the check market. They had coach and play caller. But, you know, that defense is just swarming. It's not just the line. It's the entire operation defensively. It's not a surprise. We just have to say it out loud. It's amazing how good that defense is. Our complimentary football is really good. It's fair. 100% fair. It is. All right. We're going to hear from Matty. Yeah. And I thought one of the huge keys in the game was the ability to get the football out on time. He hit Gerald Everett with a big one over the middle, so there was a lot to like. Time to talk to the coach. Max Eber Flus. Eber Flus. Hey, coach up the Chicago Bears. It was really good. I mean, there was a lot of good situations that we had. Doing well. Thanks for having me on. Thanks for coming on, coach. Let's talk about what I thought was the key drive in the game. And I know there were a lot of good things, but you go three and out, they score on a, there was some kind of a mix up up front, Chewba Hubbard's in the end zone. And I thought Caleb taking you down the field and hitting DJ for a touchdown, that was huge. Because if you go three and out again and they score again, you're like, oh God, we're down two scores, I thought that was a massive statement. Yeah, I really liked the way the response was there on offense. They did a really good execution there. And obviously the big chunk play 34 yards, you know, really good protection in it, crossing route to DJ and it's a good run after the catch to coach. When you talk about execution, it's almost like you're saying, hey, every individual player, every coach has just to do their job. You do your job well enough. You could be able to increase your chance to win ball games. So what's the difference between week one and where the ball club is today? Yeah, just a more clean execution, you know, we used to get, you know, we're not perfect, but protection is better. You know, the route disciplines are better, you know, and the guys are just working to continue and to improve that as we have time on task. You know, it's a, like we said, it's a new offense together. And I think we're building every single week and getting better every single week. You say execution though, but it was that coach McKay from Tampa says, what do you think of your team's execution? He says, I'm all for it. Yeah, exactly. So when you, so would you say that you say execution, break that down. What does that mean? What is it that you tell the players regarding that? Yeah, it's just, you know, we have a play called offense, defense and kicking. And then sometimes there's an investment that needs to be made and the communication needs to be made. And we have to execute that play and that's, you know, the looks are different, you know, all those different things, but we have to make the adjustments to execute at a high level. And when you do that, you know, the play works. And once in a while, the other team makes a good play and you have to live with that. Then you just got to move to the next play. It's a cycle of the snap and executing one play at a time. I want to talk. Who do you and I were talking, coach, about complimentary football and the sequence before halftime, you guys go on fourth and one, you run Roshan and he does not get it. 418 left in the second. And then what is it like to be in your shoes, you're the defensive play caller, not just a head coach where you go, all right, we're not punting from the 39. I don't want to try a 57 yard field goal here, but I know what I got in my back pocket is a hell of a defense. So it allows you to be more of a gambler in that situation. Talk about that whole sequence because your defense picked you up. Yeah, you know, you look at the margins, you know, what, what, when you're going to go for things during the game. And again, those are in for the first half. And then you got to kind of adjust based on school in the second half. And that for us was, was a go all the way at that particular point, you know, based on wind and based on field goal, you know, kick distance and all that. So it was a green light for us, a no-brainer, and again, we didn't get it. And you know, we, the linebacker made a good play on that particular play. And then we ended up going three and out, which was great. And on the third down, it was a really good, you know, cause fumble by brisker and then recovered fumble, you know, by Dexter, and that was really good on that one. And then we turned that into a touchdown, you know, and a quick touchdown. So we really wanted to score fast there ahead of the two-minute so we could double dip on them and we end up getting that done. So those guys really executed well. Tariq made a stop on downs on fourth and three and the 37 and we come back and score our second touchdown there, you know, in a short amount of time. Cap, did you see the stat about the Bears defense? The Bears pressured the Panthers on 21 to 41 dropbacks, which is 49%. That's the highest pressure rate in a game since 2009. So when we were talking about the Bears defensive line, we talked about billings and Dexter and Walker and sweat and trying to figure out, like, who's going to be able to emerge. This whole line has been productive. They give you something. What, why have they been so productive, coach? Well, we always say, you know, the term, we say, rush and cover, cover and rush, it all goes together. So, you know, when the Russia's humming, the ball comes out faster, you know, when the coverage is really good in terms of guys are, you know, where they're supposed to be, then they're supposed to be there in terms of the coverage contour, then it gives them another second to get home, another count to get home at times. So it's always working hand in hand, the rush and the cover. I do want to ask you about the touchdown throw to DJ. We've watched it a billion times here on video where he looks the safety over, the safety bites, thinking it's Keenan Allen on, I think it would have been a post route. And then Caleb, you can almost see a smile on his face. Guess what? I got him one on one and he puts it where either DJ makes a play or it's incomplete. No under throw on the ball. That's growth in a quarterback. Can you take us through that play? Yeah. So it was a, it was a good play design by the office staff and, you know, and Shane so they did a really nice job with that. You know, he ends up, you know, signaling over to the one side and then, you know, for a particular play, a short, a short play and then, honestly, you look back to the post route to DJ and did a really good job. What DJ did a really good job of was he, you know, the stem at the top of that route. He did a really nice job to create that extra space. So can the control throw him open right there? So it was really good play, play design, really good operation by the whole offense. You get this question every now and then from our callers regarding quarterbacks in the shotgun. Coach, can you remember a time where you've seen so many quarterbacks, not just Caleb, just saw my quarterback play in general, where there's just so many that are in the shotgun, there was a time where that was an optional play. It was always under center, except if there was a certain play, but what changed, Coach, when you take a look at quarterback play across the board, it seems like it's exclusively in the shotgun? Yeah, I just really think the college influence really came into the pro game and that's where it really comes from. So to me, guys can see better, you know, it gives them more vision, you know, they'll ever have their back to the to the defense and they can really look into certain what's going on in front of them. And I think the college, you know, it's just the way it is now. It's just the way it is. It's been that way for a long time, but I really do think they operate well there. I guess, Cap, it's just like, whatever you're comfortable with in college, you bring over to the pros and you just bring that skill set. Correct. Is that right, coach? Yeah, I would say that's true. That's where you saw saw some of the up tempo stuff. You know, Cam's really, he's really comfortable doing that. And he's operates well in that hurryed up, not necessarily hurry up, you know, to snap the ball fast, but you know, really look at the defense, get on the line and look at the defense and then get the calls. And he's operating well that way. It's in terms of going to London, I was talking to Jonathan about this. I love that city. I've been there. It's awesome. But you're going, I want to have a vacation. You're going on a business trip. You leave tonight. Can you take us through the decision to leave tonight? Because I think the last time that bears in London, you weren't here yet. They left like Thursday night and they thought that was the way to do it. Take us through that and then how do you let the guys enjoy a super cool trip, but it's business, we got to get the one and all this week. Yeah, it is a business trip, but you know, we got also, you know, enjoy, you know, enjoy each other, enjoy the time over there. And I think that's important. You know, we're going to fly outside, like you said, and then tomorrow the players will have the day off and that's, you know, getting used to their clocks and the schedules and all that. Then Wednesday will have a walkthrough practice, which will be good for us, you know, get the bodies acclimated still and then really it's about Thursday is going to be a normal Thursday, right? It'll be a normal Friday practice and Saturday will walk through and then Sunday will play the game. So, but to me it's always about your preparation, it's always about the focus and the intent of, you know, why we're there and that's to play a football game and to compete in that football game. We're excited about competing against Jacksonville this week. So it's just a business trip for us. But again, we'll have some fun when we're out there and get our preparation in as well. Why leave tonight? Is that something that your sleep advisors have told you? How did you guys figure on tonight versus what they did to previous staff? They left like five days later. Yeah, it was just our performance, you know, performance staff, you know, thought it was best to do it this way. And you know, I just went over to Italy by so, you know, in the summer and it's, it takes you a day or two to get used to the time. And once you're there about, you know, three days, I think you're, you're back on schedule and you can operate the normal, normal way and I think that's a good thing to do. You've been to London before, you got a special spot that you'd like to go to from time to time when you're there. I know with the Dallas Cowboys, we had a dinner there, I think, at the Palace one night. It was really cool. It was the cool thing. I was looking back in 2014, I believe. That's super cool. That sounds good. Yeah. What's the fair? I mean, it's not like American food, but I'm sure they give you, you know, some great food. Is there any particular thing that you like there, food wise? The only thing I know is tea and crumpet. Oh, you want a good steak? Or fish and chips, that's it. Yeah. Fish. I guess. I don't know. We'll figure it out when we get over there. Okay. Coaches always. We appreciate the time. Good luck this week. Get the one and oh. All right. All right. Maddie Rifflous, the head coach for the Bears on a car X. Tiring on Ohio. Captain Jay Hood, weekday morning, 7 to 10.
