(upbeat music) - Good morning, Chicago. And welcome in to the Captain Jake Good Morning Show, on ESPN 1000. And we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We got Sean, who got Jay Moore. We got you, you're on this three hour ride on this Waddle Wednesday. Hope that you're gonna have a great up day, open phone lines for you, 312-332-ESP-N-3323776 is our phone number. Don't forget you can watch our shows on YouTube, YouTube.com, hit that subscribe button for YouTube on ESPN Chicago, as well as on Twitch.tv/ESP-1000 Chicago. We've been talking to you about the Chicago Bears. Good to hear from Tommy, he gives his breakdown of the bears and their matchup against the Jaguars. Of course, our coverage is all day on Sunday right here on ESPN 1000, 835 kickoff, I believe, cap on Sunday. - That is correct. I'm excited. Brett and I, we're strategizing the food options for Sunday. - Meal prep on Saturday, cook on Sunday, correct, or? - So we like to eat omelets on Sunday, and I usually cook the omelets at the end of the first quarter, but that's at like 12.30. We'll have a little coffee and a little something in the morning, and then we do a big like brunch spread with my wife, Mindy. This time, I think we're going to fire up the vittles early, like eight, so everything's ready when that ball's in the air, let's go. 'Cause I don't have to deal with the red zone and the NFL network game updates and the other game, it's us. - It's one game. - One game, baby, lock in, family room, not basement. We'll go to the cap cave to steal your term, to yours, you've trademarked it, and we'll watch all the other games after, hopefully in the post-flow of a victory. - I believe so, Cap. - Post-victory glow. - I believe they'll find a way to win the football game. Again, it's not in Jacksonville, and it's not in Chicago, it's in the UK, and I think that the Bears have momentum. They have momentum because Caleb Williams in the offense is starting to have rhythm. I want you to think about it. Caleb Williams, as Sean gives us the numbers, he is really ascending before our very eyes. The first 10 quarters, 57% completions. The zero to three touchdown interception ratio, 57 pass a rating, the last 10 quarters, 70% completions, five to one touchdown interception ratio. I love what we're seeing here from Caleb Williams as a quarterback, and the difference between Caleb Williams and, say, Rex Grossman in his first year with the Bears, or Cade McDown, or Jay Cutler, or Justin Fields, or Mitch Trubisky is all about infrastructure. And the one thing that Bears fans cannot deny, think about all those years, going back to 2000, with Cade McDown, and move forward. Think about the weapons that was there for the quarterback in place. Think about it. Now think about this season with Caleb Williams. It's night and day. - Okay, give me the best weaponry prior to this year. - Something with Brandon Marshall and Alshan Jeffrey on both sides. - And Martell's Bennett. - And Martell's Bennett as a tight end, yeah. - Right, with Jay, that would be the best that I have witnessed. Unfortunately, the chemistry in the locker room, part of that trustman's fall part that some of those guys weren't the best chemistry guys. This chemistry is at a totally different level. So this is the best we've seen, no doubt about it. - And Jay, been there, done that. Jay, you know, with his 18 different offensive coordinators, all that, again, here's the thing that we could look at with this year, versus that era of Jay. Jay, you know, the hope is that Caleb Williams has to worry about five or six different offensive coordinators. Shane Waldron should be the guy as long as he could be the guy. If he gets a head coaching job or he gets fired, I'd like for the young quarterback to be able to work hand in glove with the offensive coordinator for some time. But you remember it was a revolving door with Jay. Look, I understand when you say the one loss record wasn't good enough 'cause it's 500. I know the kind of player and kind of leader or lack thereof that Jay Cutler was for the Chicago Bears, but we cannot deny the infrastructure was off, whether there's new coaches, new offensive coordinators, new schemes, it was a mess. And so on top of that, offensive line play was not great. And Jay Cutler, more times that was buried behind the line of scrimmage. So I just think that this iteration of the Bears tells all we need to know about, the Bears just trying to set it up so it could just be sustainable cap, sustainable. Not firing guys, not, you know, half stepping on quality talent, but just getting it done. Just saying, this is our team, we're getting better every single year. - Yeah, it's important that this is a huge developmental year for Caleb. I don't think they're winning the Super Ball. I don't think you think they're winning the Super Ball. Can you get to the playoffs? Maybe, yeah, they got talent. But at the end of the year, we have to go, okay, our guys, the guy, now we take the next step. - Yeah, and that's the hope. But these numbers are encouraging. - That's not, in the end, we're not trying to create a narrative that Caleb Williams is definitely without a question, the rookie of the year and the best of the young quarterback. We don't know all of that yet. All we can do is root for the Bears and hope that it's sustainable and that he's growing every single game. And I like how the schedule lays out. You know, it's funny, I don't know how many people you talk to regarding the Bears schedule, especially at this time cap. But there's some that's just like, this schedule's not laid out to really test Caleb Williams. Man, I'd rather have it this way every year if you can. Seriously, like, 'cause when it was revealed, you and I looked at each other like, wait a minute now, like where's the Packers? Where are the Vikings? - Right. - Like usually you get punched in the face, week one. Here are the Packers. Let's go. - Oh God. - That's not right. - We had a year ago, under Mitch. - Mitch in 19 was the Packers. - But this is different. This is an opportunity for him to learn. Soft schedule or not, whatever it is, you gotta be able to beat those opponents. And I'm happy to say that. - When you're playing the last play schedule, you're gonna get some softer, potentially softer games. So, we'll see. We'll see how this develops. This is another good test for him. On the road, foreign country, Jacksonville fighting to try and stay relevant. They won a game last week. They should be coming off to in a row. They lost at the buzzer to the Texans. - Yes. - Then one last week. So, we'll see. - You feel like you're close. - You feel like you're close. - Caleb Williams on playing in London. - I think it's my first, not my first time going out of the country, but first time playing in a place like this. So, I was checking out the game a little bit early on. The Vikings and Jets and things like that. And they showed a couple of cool pictures and things like that of that game. And just decided to go and play there overall. I know those games are always packed. And so, we're really excited. And then what was the second part of that? - Just any challenges you think, Nervie? - Yeah, definitely. You gotta go out there. And I think it's a seven hour time difference in London, maybe six. So, yeah, six. And so, just adjusting that as fast as possible. I know the team and everybody's gonna have, and show us and teach us ways to be able to adjust it that real quickly. So, we can, you know, 'cause obviously sleep and recovery is super important and for everything. Mental, all of that to be able to recall all these plays that we have and be able to go out there and win. So, I think that's the biggest challenge is to sleep and things like that. And, you know, we have to do a good job with that. - Caleb Williams plays coy at the media. You know that he was flown out to some crazy party when he was at USC. - I think he's seen the world. - Well, after the draft and the mini camps and everything, he went to Paris. You remember this with his girlfriend and there were a bunch of other players. Maybe Lamar Jackson. Bunch of guys were all in Europe for a while. They did a football camp over there. So, he's had plenty of cool experiences. This is a business trip. - You know, I know we're not even halfway through the season yet, but what I love is, is that everything that you and I both hear about Caleb Williams is him wanting to be legendary, hashtag be legendary. He wants to be the best. This idea that he's in greatness. Like he's gonna be up in these clubs here, not too far away from us and just ass out of the window someplace and just, he's into football. - That's who he is. - He's young guys at this age camp. They just wanna be able to say that they wanna championship. I know that you and I, like president, you and I both know that Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, many of those that didn't win a championship were great. Damn Reno, but for these kids, they never wanna be without a championship. That's the whole thing. They wanna be legendary. - Correct. They're not as into the ones that are serious about running the streets and doing all this other. They want to build their brand, but the brand must have a championship with it. - Right. So they're not like Sean, just running the streets and young guy, just chasing, fantasizing about CJ Stroud and all that. - That's the thing, that's the difference. Caleb Williams is a guy that just wants to be able to win. And I appreciate it because all of the fall to roll and all the nonsense that we heard before he even took a snap. And that's the problem in our sport society cap as I get on my soapbox here, brought to you by all. - Oh, wow, that's the big yellow logo on the blue box. - I don't even think they make that anymore. - Wow, oh, like you couldn't have said the tide. - No, I haven't seen those in so good, too. - Ivory soap, I couldn't even get it out. Be serious, like if I get on my soapbox, box brought to you by all. - Wow. - The soapbox is, is that I'm saying that this whole talk about personality and what do you looks like and all that. At some point, Cap, it comes back to the football and the work ethic. - Correct. - People try to color outside the lines to us telling us, well, we don't like him because his fingernails and cries do his mam, all that stuff, and you see his phone case. - Yes, so, ultimately, when I hear that, that's a reflection of the person that says it, that they have something in their closet that they don't want to reveal. - That is correct. - It's not about personnel, it's about production, about football. You don't have to go to bed with a guy, just roof on them as a football player. - God almighty, do the job. - Do you want them to be likable? Yeah, you want to like your athletes, absolutely. Do you want to love your athletes? Love your family. - Correct. - Love your family and your friends first. - That is correct. - 'Cause you, 'cause if you saw what Cap and I have seen over the years outside of the facility of some of your favorites. - Yeah, you'd be like. - Oh, God. If you saw what we've seen over the years, Cap, quietly, like you're supposed to be a fan favorite. Why are you doing that to her? That's strange. - Crazy. - Cap, just saying. - Yeah. Not good. - I'm just saying. - Some of them that people be like, who? That guy? - Yes. - You wouldn't, it would blow your mind some people over the years. So that's why you just, for me, maybe I'm just too meat and potatoes as a fan, but that's just who I am. Did you win? Did you lose again better? You're getting worse? - Correct. - That's all I care about. I don't have time for anything else. - Completely. - My sports bandwidth is based on what we see on the games for us, you and I break it down. - That's it. - And now he has a good bedside manner. - Correct. - I told you Lupinella said to me, you know what your problem is in this town? - What's that? Y'all want to love your athletes. Ooh, they're cuddly. I want to have them to dinner. Give me nine SOBs that all I care about there, about winning and I'll enjoy the winning. - That's it? - Okay, thanks, Luke. - And I think that's fair. That's fair. You know why he told you that? He played for the Yankees. - Correct. - Well, they hate their athletes. - Right. - Did we win or did we lose? - 'Cause there's no in between. It's either they love them or they hit. There's no in between. - That's it. - Think they're hating Carlos Road down this morning? - Yes. - Sam, judge getting killed in New York, crushed and knowing that at some point he'll have a big hit and then that will all turn. - Correct. - So. - This way it is. - It is what it is, man. - Cap owes me something. We'll talk about that coming up next on Cap and Jhood brought to you by all. - Play, play, play, play, play, play, play, play. - Okay, just about that time. You're tuned in to the Cap and Jhood show. - Everything ain't hardcore, you know. - On Chicago's home for sports, ESPN, Chicago. - It's a Cap and Jhood morning show on ESPN 1,000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Cap, he owe me something. - What was that? - You promised and it has not come to my door just as if yet. - So when we had yesterday and Sean brought it up, talking about the opener for the Black Hawks, a lid lifter in Utah at the Delta Center as a Hawks dropped the first one. Better hockey club obviously, better than they were last year, but they fell short against the brand new Utah hockey club. And that's not because I don't know the name, that's the name of the team, the Utah hockey club. - Correct. - Because they were the Arizona Coyotes. - Yeah. - Couldn't get their lease or stadium deals done correctly or the way they wanted them. And so they decided to move to Salt Lake City. - So then from there, the first preseason game for the Bulls happened yesterday as well against the Cavs as the Bulls win that one. Very impressed by Bozzellis based on pitchers. Pictures and things I read this morning regarding the Bulls. I don't have an antenna to watch these things, Cap. - They're gonna get an XFINITY they'll done here pretty quick. It's what I'm hearing. - You're reporting? - Cap is reporting. - No, just giving you some, what I'm hearing. It's not a report. - It's all right. - Once I get the locked in, it's done, I'll report it. But that's what I'm hearing. - You know, they're working very, very diligently in the CHSN studios to get this deal done. - It's aggregated already. It's already out there. So, you know. - No. - I'm just telling you, you'll be throwing your phone. David Cap reporting deal soon to be done with XFINITY. - Wow. - Put the black hawks and bulls already out there. What I'm telling you, Cap, is that you promised an antenna and I don't have an antenna. Like, I can't, I told you, I'm not invested in this. Sounds like you're not either. - I watched last night. - Watch what? - The Bulls. - On what? - CHSN. - You were out though. It was not in the Cap Cave. - No, but it was on TV on CHSN, where I was. I got to watch it. - Where you were? - Yes. - Not at home. - You were in a bar. - Correct. - I don't have the channel yet in my home. - Yes, correct. - And I was gonna buy you and I antennas like two days ago. - Well, where is it? - I was told by a birdie that they're close to getting a deal done with XFINITY, but it's not done yet. - Doug Bird told you this? - Who told you lately? (laughing) Who told you this? - Birdie Tabbits, the old baseball scout. - I see. - I told you that. - What you're saying is is that you're going to skimp, not pay for an antenna, because a deal is imminent, you're saying. - Is what I'm hearing, correct. Now, if we get a week in and they don't have a deal done, yes, I will buy both of us antennas. - It's kind of ridiculous. I'm just saying on the surface, and I don't know, you clearly know more about this than I do, 'cause I'm not allowed to be able to put my cup against the door of the office of my home to listen in where your wife's the TV executive is having high-level discussions about this. - I'm not allowed to be able to listen in to the rumored innuendo about this new channel, because she pushes the door up and then shoos me away. Tels me not to listen in, so I can't give you the intel like I used to. So I listen through the vents. So, so, that's a cap. I'm just telling you, this is not great for the consumer. First preseason game, I saw what happened. I have the NBA app here. I've got that to be able to see the condensed, but I can't give you the thorough breakdown and shame on CHSN. This should have been done, Cap. If you knew you were gonna get off NBC Sports Chicago, get a deal done, don't do that. - Well, it's not. - Round four vision is behind. - It's not just on the CHSN people, 'cause, again, you had the, it's had a cheerleader, well, fine. - Wow. - An older cheerleader. - It was not, it's like the Dodgers still have cable systems in LA, and they've been there for years on this network that they created that don't get the games. It's not as easy as it sounds, because you want a certain amount of money. They only wanna give you a certain amount of money. They want you to be on a higher tier, but I know that the fine executives, Jason Coyle and company, are working diligently to get this deal done. - No Bulls fan, no Hawks fan on Rizor Vision should have missed anything by now. You knew it was coming down to Pike, Keck. We've been talking about this for months. - Right, now the Hawks game, they lost five to two to the Utah Hockey Club, was on ESPN last night, TV. But going forward, you gotta be able to watch those games in your home when they're local broadcast. - That's exactly right. So, exactly right. So, Sean, put this on the pole at ESPN 1000, and you're gonna have to have multiple questions for this. Did you see, did you watch the Black Hawks? Did you watch the Chicago Bulls? Could you watch neither? Because you don't have CHSN. - Next Hawks game is Friday night, 7 p.m. - Opener? - At Winnipeg. - Oh yeah, at Winnipeg, okay. - Yeah. - So, that's the thing. - Bulls Saturday. - Mm-hmm. - The CHSN pre-season game for the Bulls. - Hawks is regular season. - Memphis in town. - Mm. - John Morant. - There you go. - Looking pretty good early, John Morant. So, Cap, from what I could glean from the game yesterday, because, again, not in my home, Josh Giddy, if he stays healthy, is going to be something for this Bulls team, as far as a lead guard, long, lanky, and he's gonna be able to distribute the basketball, and Kobe White and/or Zach Levine's gonna play off the ball. If Giddy's there, he's gonna have to be the distributor. Kobe White was fantastic last year. - He had 21 yesterday. Does he know it's just pre-season kid? 21 points to 25 minutes. - Pretty good. - He got open shots all over the place. - They were down 16 early. - Yeah. - And roared back. - Roared back. - Yeah. - So, good to see. Again, pre-season. Let's just keep getting better. They had no lines or ball, because now he tested positive for COVID. - Okay. - It's like-- - All right, the knee is better? - Good. Can we get over to the COVID? - It is, his life is a country song. It's unbelievable. - It really is. Like, you can't get back on the floor when you wanna get on the floor and now you got COVID. Dog sick. - Headline, sometimes. Blamed COVID recovery for balls latest delay. (laughing) - It's just a knee has COVID? - Oh, God. - All right. - How's your knee doing? - It's good. - That's a sniffle. (laughing) - He's got a knee, his knee's got COVID. (laughing) What's that, Billy? - Yeah, I just, I don't know. His knee's got COVID. I mean, I don't know what you want. I don't know what you want. - Madam, the staff just told me the knees got COVID. - Yeah, so I don't know. He's a day to day, game to game. All right, Billy, thank you. - That's it. (laughing) - Thank you, Billy. - Why did you talk to Billy before the season gets underway? He's always got a lot to say. - I love Billy. I'm a big fan. When we heard Demar do an interview a few weeks ago where he said that's one of the best coaches that I've ever played for. - Yeah, he busts in his ass and this is what, I mean, it's not like his team is in tatters cab, it's not awful. It just has a ceiling to it. - That is correct. - That's all. - He's coaching what's in front of him. - That's it. - He's not getting fired. - That is correct. - Imagine having a new coach with this group. - Oh, God. He's holding it together. - Correct. - It's like-- - He's got a veteran coach who's done it many, many times. - He's just trying, he's just, once Zach is not no longer here, it might make his life even more easier. Remember those games when Zach was out? Billy was like, here we go. Ball's not gonna stick. All right, Demar, inside here. We're gonna move inside out. Looking for the open man for the three. We miss, we gotta get back on defense. On a miss there, this one. Guys, hit the wings. Like he was-- - Kick it in the vouch and then he'll get the ball hopping. - But he was happy. He won't tell you that like on the record, but he had to be like, the ball's not sticking here. I don't have one on one. Oh, man. - Let's go. It looks like a team now. - Well, it makes me think about Zach as far as his long term. So we'll see how long he's gonna be with the team. - We will see. - Cap, you've always said many times that there is a certain month of the year that is perfect for sports. What month is that? The month is the most perfect for sports. 'Cause I think we need to talk to our listeners about this this morning. Because right now at this particular time, it's great, man. We just, we started a show talking about how great the baseball is. We have four games today. You have got football well underway. Look, I mean basketball season, hockey season, it's all happening. So October to me is pretty great. - It is. I call it like September, October. We had to play-- - October. - Chase to get in. - Yeah. - Football's going all deal. And then you got the NBA and NHL cranking up this month. - College football, full swing? - For me, I've said this, it's great right now. But I like March, April, because I know it's coming summer. And as I look at it, March Madness is my favorite event, especially the first two days of the tournament. I know the Masters is around the corner after the NCAA Championship. I know baseball opening day, the NBA and NHL are headed to the playoffs. That's my, and then I know the Kentucky Derby, one of my favorite events is around the corner. - So, May? - That's for me. March, April there, then. March Madness thing. - Yeah. - That's where I cast my lot. But I understand people who think it's now. I get it. - But everything we got on the table in October, the best baseball is right now. It's your number one sport. Yes, you're going through spring training into opening day and opening day is always great. It should be a holiday. I'm going to Congress. I'm putting that bill right out there. - So, opening day, day off for everybody. - It should be. - Enjoy baseball. - 100% but I also think the day after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday. - The Super Bowl should be on Saturdays. - Or do that. - But if it's on Sunday. - That's right. - But if it is Sunday, then give you Monday off. - March versus October is pretty great, Cap. And you still get your horse racing. Yeah, you don't have the Triple Crown running. But, of course, guys at you and Brett still betting on the races overseas. - The Derby prepped. - Yeah, watch that. - You're still watching overseas. Is Arkansas still running? - The Arkansas Derby. - Okay, that's our Ben, yeah. - Yeah. So what I'm saying is that you give me March and boy, you make a compelling case when you talk about March Madness and just because it's going to get warmer because of Springs here, Hope Springs eternal Ed Lynch, all that. But now, October, look at what we have in front of us. We got so much. Pretty amazing. I think we should ask the question. Let's open the phone lines. - Sean is over the phone lines here, 312-332-ESPN, 332-3776 our phone number. For you as a sports fan, what is the best month for sports? The best month on the calendar. - Yeah, I go March, April is one month, that 30 day window there. You could say, you know, mid September to ten to October. - Yeah, I think it's great. I think what we're watching right now is fantastic. - Correct. - Sean, let's ask that question and see you. What is the best month for sports? Cap has the spring I have right now in October. Which one would you choose? Let's talk about that. And again, sports all year round is awesome, but think about right now. And then cap laying out all the great things in the spring. What is the best month for sports for you? On Cap and Jhood. (upbeat music) - You're listening to Cap and Jhood. Follow the show on Instagram @thecatman and @igjhood. This is ESPN Chicago. Chicago's home for sports. (upbeat music) - What the hell do I mean? - It's a Cap and Jhood morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. The Bears are in the UK, in London. They'll take on the Jacksonville Jaguars coverage all day on Sunday right here on the home of the Bears ESPN 1000. And by the way, Cap, if there's any bear that's interested in a Happy Meal box, you're gonna see something different on the Happy Meal box in the United Kingdom. McDonald's removed the smile from its Happy Meal boxes to encourage conversations about mental health and emotions. - What? - You ever see the Happy Meal? They got the signature smile on the side? - I'm gonna look it up. - Look it up right now. - You see that, Jay Moore? Taking the smile off the Happy Meal, I mean, is it a Happy Meal if you don't have a smile on it? - On the box. - And why would you do that? - I mean, they're just trying to, to, part of a mental health awareness week, taking the, to highlight the pressure of children having to feel happy all the time. - Wait a minute, it's the arch upside down for the smile, right? - Yeah, yeah. - And they're taking that off. - In the UK, yep. That's insanity. - But here's the key, and I can't wait for you to talk to your family about this. 'Cause I know it's gonna be-- - My daughter-in-law's a psychiatrist. - So that's what I want you to talk to her about. To highlight the pressure that children feel to be happy all the time. That's why I'm taking the smile off. Cap, there's nothing like a child smiling and laughing. - You're having a Happy Meal and loving it. - And having a good time in life. Those kids don't have to worry about bills, or whether or not their tire's gonna blow out, or traffic, all this stuff. - Paying the mortgage. - All the care about is, could you imagine me and a kid again? - You don't have to worry about all that nonsense. You're just living free and happy. Get a Happy Meal, you're just happy. Yeah, it's like the smile off the box. So kids won't feel pressure to be happy. Is it pressure for a kid to be happy? - But dude, the kids even care. Once they get the Happy Meal, they're happy. - They're about to eat. - I would say so. - Right, they're about to crush some fast food that they love. - The idea that you're just gonna take that off just because, Cap. - And by the way, are there children and as part of the board of directors of McDonald's in the UK? - I think we should take the smile off the box. I'm happy all the time. - Is there kids there with a little suit? - No. - Mary with a little dress? - No. - That's seven years old, tell them, hey, take the smile off the box. - That's just, that's pathetic. - Who decides these things? - I don't know. I wonder sometimes, who are these people making these decisions? - Yeah, no one's told, no one's told the kids. Hey man, here's the thing, you're way too happy. So don't feel pressured to smile and have a good time in life before you have to deal with the dog and the wife of the bills and the car, the car note. Don't worry about that. Just take the smile off. Be unhappy now. Be like the rest of us, miserable. - Like, does the box make you, you better smile. - No, it does not. - No, it does not. - This wasn't, it's more what's inside the box that makes the kid happy. - Correct, the prize or whatever to give you a little package of stuff, right? - Absolutely. - Put it on the pole, Sean, do the kids even notice the smile on the box? No, okay. (laughing) Seriously, that's why I want you to bring that to the family zoom that you have. - We do tonight. - I want, yes, I want you to bring that to the same, like ask the professionals that work in mental health in your family. - My daughter, Jen, psychiatrist. Jen, I got a question. Do you think the kids feel pressure to be happy because it's on the side of the Happy Meal box? - So you'll be like, what? - If she says, oh yes, I think they should take, I'll be like, okay, I'm done.
