[Music] Good morning and welcome into the Captain Jay Hood boarding show. On ESPN 1000 and we are streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you I'd like to remind you that we'll have Albert Breer from Money Morning Quarterback and SI.com as well as Amazon Prime. We'll hear from Albert coming up at 835 with his nuggets of football info. But first, it's shot and no shot here. [Music] Good morning boys on Tuesday. What's today, Wednesday? What's today, Tuesday? Are you drunk from Elgin? Are you still drunk? It's night at Old Republic in Elgin, the thanks to Bud Light, the Windy City Takeover events. We had a great time. I think I've been to that Old Republic place. I had a few adult beverages and I lost track of the day. So do you get happens? You know what? Here's what you're going to have to learn as a young man, producer/host. You need recovery time. My God, every time you do these, you come and drunk the next day. It's a short turnaround, man. Well, this is adulting in sports radio. How many times, Cap? How many times have I? Had a late night. Late night drinking. Press in the flesh and they have to turn around the next day and go, "Here we go." You're sprying, ready to go. He's always drunk the next day. Giggly? Just like, you have to have some recovery time. My God, Jay. You gotta be ready. He's always drunk. Yeah, you're better than that. He's on top of a great Tiger's win. Is it Tuesday or Wednesday? It is Tuesday. It is Tuesday. You know it's Tuesday because it's not Waddle Wednesday, right? Correct. Jay? That's Waddle on today? It's a good point. It's Albert Breer Day. That means it's Tuesday. I just tease out a bridge. What is it? He's, see, Cap, you need to talk to him. Putting him to the side. Jay, we have to have a talk. Yeah. Drunk. And drunk because it's a long drive, Belgium to Chicago. It's a long drive. I've been there since 2019 at Old Republic. Fortunately, he had somebody driving him. He did. He didn't drink a drive. Well, thanks. Thanks, Dad. Because he didn't want to spill his drink. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Yes. Yes. There's the clarity from David Kaplan. He wasn't driving. Yes. Here's Shane Orlett. Wow. And that's one of the growing. Wonderful. Thank you very much. Oh, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Good. That was great. That's how we do it here. That's how we do it. Holy smokes. Game art. Game art. Just plays it right off a hoodie. That's right. I just like disclaimer. I am not currently drunk. I just want to put that out there. That's a lie. I want to be safe. That's a lie. That's true. Hold on. He's giggly and he's giddy and he's drunk from last night. You guys even know what? He's going to say he's not drunk, Cap. Doesn't know what day it is. What? Right. We're time is waddle today. I want to see 35 tomorrow on Wednesday as he always is. Today we have the fine Albert Breer today 35. Okay. All right. Let's get the morning. Okay. Well, I don't know. It's Tuesday. Tommy, how about you? I'm a few credit shy of my Wednesday degree. Thank you, Tommy. Kay Williams became the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to win each of his first three home games with zero interceptions. He joins to a Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan as the only four first three home games without throwing a pick in any of them. Now, Caleb still hasn't seen much in the touchdown volume department, but shot or no shot. Not turning the ball over is the most important thing Caleb can do this season. The most important thing. Not no shot because the most important thing he can do is continue to push the ball down the field and lead us to scores. You're going to have some mistakes. That's going to happen. And that's part of the growth anyway, like Patrick Mahomes. I think he's like 11 to nine touched down the interception in his last 10 games. But guess what? They're seven and three. So there's a guy to hose a ball too long. And he's made a mastery out of it. Yeah. Oh, the ball for 15 seconds. Yeah, I would say that's it's certainly vitally important, but it's not number one on the list. I would say that that is a no shot. You love the idea that end of a game that is zero interceptions. But I think that his rapport with his weapons and getting the ball out is more important to me, Cap. If he's trying to put it into a tight window and a DB is just faster to the ball, it happens. He's going to make mistakes, Cap, because he's a rookie. But also, could you imagine the other side of it? Hey, can't even throw interception, but on third down, he threw it out of balance every time. Okay. Well, that sucks. You got to take risks in this game. That's all I'm saying. Right. There's going to be some picks that are going to happen. Some are going to go off a guy's hands. Some you're going to make a bad decision. I'm okay with that. If I see ascending players, I see them getting better. That's fair. That's all fair. There's, I mean, I love the zero interceptions, but I also like the production and him getting into a tight window and then succeeding. Yeah. That's what I love. I just saw a stat on the TV. The Chiefs are 30th in Red Zone efficiency this year. 30th. Saw that a little bit last night on third down. He's hard. I got the greatest quarterback maybe of all time. Hey, look, we got to just be honest about Patrick Momes. He might be the best quarterback I've ever seen. He's also just not playing good football right now. It is what it is. We got to be honest about it. That is. That's fair. I can't disagree with you, Shay. Third down situations like third and like short or third and goal. Like it's nobody home. He's ran all over the place trying to get a touchdown, but I'll never bet against him again. But then they pick up Kareem Hunt off the scrap heap, 102 yards. Maggie's got a working boy. Maggie had him going. Oh, hey, my homes isn't sharp. Run the football. Correct. 139 yards total. Yep. All right, Shay. All right. Jaquan Brisker did not travel with the team to London yesterday as he has concussion-like symptoms. The Bears kind of have the safety position covered even without Brisker. Obviously, Jonathan Owens and Kevin Byard, new additions to the roster this year, so you can get through the loss of Brisker. Certainly this week with a buy coming up after London. But the reporting has been if Brisker gets cleared later in the week, they can fly him out later to meet the team and play on Sunday. Shot or no shot? The Bears should just give Jaquan Brisker the week off. That's a shot. Yep. Because then I can give him three weeks off. He would have played last Sunday. He'd have this Sunday off the following Sunday off because it's the buy and the following Sunday he'd come back. It'd be three weeks of rest. I'm worried about people. He's been in the protocol before. It's important that we think of this young man's future. First, football. Second, so I would tell him. Relax. If you want to start your vacation early or see the trainers or whatever you need to do, you're not coming to London. I know he's super bombed. I know he'd rather be there, but it's about your health first. And thank goodness the Bears have enough talent. To say Briskers out, we'll just plug in someone else and we still will be able to work well in the secondary. Correct. Jonathan Owens, you're up. It'll be fine. Because if it's not going to be Owens, it's going to be Jalen Johnson, or it's going to be Bayard as we saw in the last game. It's going to be Stevenson Gordon. Someone's going to make a play in that secondary. Correct. Multiple guys going to make a play against Trevor Lawrence. It'll be fine. Thank God for death. Agree? If the team had to rely on Jaquan Brisker making plays only, that'd be a problem. If it was just Brisker, but you got so much talent back there, Cap. You do? So I'm all the best to him. Heal up. Get ready for the stretch wrong. Rock and roll. It's okay. Rock and roll. All right, Shay. All right, Adam Schrefter talked yesterday about the Cleveland Browns and said that with them mired in this one and four start and stuck with the contract for Deshawn Watson, they are already open to moving players at the NFL trade deadline, which isn't about a month. Most teams are going to be interested in Amari Cooper. The Bears probably won't. They don't need wide receiver help. But all season and all of last offseason, their right guard, 29 year old Wyatt Teller has been rumored as a trade candidate for Cleveland. He was an elite blocker a couple years ago, struggling so far this year, obviously context around that. And he's better than any of the options the Bears have at right guard. So shot or no shot. If the Browns are fire sailing, Ryan polls should try to trade for their right guard Wyatt Teller. What is the injury history? Like you said, injured right now. What is his injury history? That's what I don't know. And I would say anything to bolster the offensive line, of course. So that's a shot to be able to. But I want to know about him. He heard his knee against the Giants this year. He was a candidate to go on IR. I don't know if they Iard him. He is on my depth chart. He's Iard. So he can come back end of this month. He looks versatile, Cap. He could play if you need him for center or right guard. Yeah. I'm looking up their depth chart. Is Joel Betonio back healthy? Yes. I left guard for the Brown. Yeah. Because I don't know. This is Kevin Jenkins thing. This dude's always hurt. That's too bad. He made it a flight, but he's got the ribs now. He's got an ankle. He's always hurt. It's too bad, really. Betonio now 32 years old. What would it cost me? That's a no shot. Effectively the question, and it doesn't even have to be a specific guy in the Cleveland Browns or a specific offensive lineman. Just making the point, there are going to be bad teams that want to sell. If an offensive lineman comes available, are you giving up a draft pick to go and get one mid season? Depends who it is. If it's somebody that I feel like is going to be starting for me next year? Yes. Yes. Ultimately, Cap is saying productive and cheap. Thank you. I'm willing to give you a good pick if I'm getting a really, really good player. Like who's the guy on the Niners? Trent Williams. Would they give up for him? A third and like a fifth when he was holding out from Washington? Maybe it was a second. That guy's the best left tackle in the game. So if you tell me the Browns call and go, "Hey, Jeddrick Williams is available." Yeah. Fifth and a third, they gave up to get Trent Williams. He's the best player in the sport at his position. He's older now, but he's been there. What if Jeddrick Will says, "I want out." He was a number one pick tenth overall in 2020 out of Bama. He starts at left tackle for the Browns. Yeah. Now again, I haven't evaluated Jeddrick Will's and I wouldn't know what I'm looking at if I tried. I'm not a left tackle. But if my staff says, "Well, that dude's going to top five left tackles and we can get him." Okay, I'm interested. I'm interested. Yes. Well, you know what, call Rizzo and ESPN Cleveland. Ask him. I called him yesterday. Oh, man. The season's over. He's, he's pissed. Yeah. You see that clip on ESPN Cleveland? I did. He is. I showed it to you. Yeah. And you know that somebody else who separate from you? Yeah. He tweeted at me yesterday and said, "I thought that was cap." They thought that was me. They were both balls. They made the same guy. Yes. Lengry at times with our team. Yeah. He was not happy. Yeah. But you dance with the devil, Browns, look what you got. You get the worst quarterback in the league. Congratulations. Yeah. And you only owe them 150 million more. It has to be said, Shay. I think we might have been talking about this off the air. There are some athletes that can do this. I think we might be able to say, "Here are my personal issues, but I'm focused on football." It is clear that Watson is a walking, breathing, lifetime special. It's what it is. Those are those movies that come on against the NFL on Sundays. Yeah. That is one of those. The Deshawn Watson story of how this S.O.B., this disgusting, allegedly disgusting individual, cannot find a way to play football because yet again came across yesterday. Another payoff of another accuser. I can't wait for the FX show. Like they're doing with Aaron Hernandez. Have you seen the clips from that? I have. That looks like maybe the worst television show that's ever been. Yes. I see it. There's no way I'm watching that. You know what's funny? Over the weekend, what's my in-laws? They had it on when I walked in. I'm like, "I'm not interested." Like, "Hey, Aaron Hernandez." I was like, "I'm not interested in this at all." I said, "I know it chapter in verse. Not interested." It looks like a student film. It's... They're into it. And I was just like, "I'll be on the patio. Thank you." God bless. God bless. They're into it because, you know what it is. It's not for us. Those shows are not for us. Those show the... Like the Clippers owner. The former Clippers owner. That's not for us either. You know that was actually good though. Yeah, I watched it. It was pretty good. So you like Lawrence Fishburner's Doc Rivers? It was... Wow. It makes me much weird though. The whole story. It was just good. It was good to me. Like the Don Sterling one? Yeah. Yeah. It's called Clipped. It's not Blake's fault. Don't blame him. Blake's not a racist, baby. Did you know Lawrence Fishburner where he got... He was cast. That bro. He didn't even know who Doc Rivers was. Not even a sports fan. That's crazy. How you don't know who Doc Rivers is? He's a thespian. Oh. Yeah, he is. Not even in the sports. We'd like you to play Doc Rivers. Oh. That's what it was. It's kind of a doctor. Oh no. He's a basketball. Brad Pitt played Billy Bean in Moneyball. And then Brad Pitt talks about he knew nothing about baseball. He had no clue. He was a football guy. Well, he was great in the movie. Fantastic. Big magic job. So what has he done? What do you mean? What do you mean, Anderson Cooper? He's telling you. Like he's, you know, a mogul and own stuff. Wow. Terrible. Terrible. Can you squeeze in one more, sir? Very quickly. I'd want to ask about the baseball playoffs. The Division Series all tie at 1-1 for the first time ever, but specifically one player. Aaron Judge, who will be the American League MVP, is making a very severe habit out of sucking in the playoffs. I actually didn't realize how bad this is for his career. He's hitting 208 with a 760 OPS in 207 postseason plate appearances with 7D strikeouts. So far this postseason, he's won for seven with four strikeouts. He also owns the single worst strikeout rate in postseason history. Shot or no shot. Aaron Judge just can't handle the bright lights. Choke on that, baby. That's a shot. Cap, you know why it's a shot? Because you know why we still hold in reverence Reggie Jackson or Derek Jeter? Because in the big moments they came through in October, then they called Jeter Mr. November two because it went into November one season. They did. Okay, so that's why we still say, hey, October, Mr. October, Reggie Jeter, because guys like like Judge and Bonds and some of these guys, when it comes to the postseason, they can't get it done. And you say the same thing for Pete Alonzo until that big home run he just hit to get that met into the next level. Same thing. Yeah. Now the one thing I would say is they pitch around him like they don't give that dude a lot to him. How is he striking out 70 times in 200 of bats? Because he's absolutely trying too hard. He's trying to make a play. It's still, but the results are what they are. No cap. That's a shot. The night. The numbers are what they are. They are. He's got to be better. He's got to be. You want him on your team? I'll take him. Imagine what he'd do it, Riggly. Oh my God. Seriously. Yankee fans are going to want him launched out of there at the end of this playoff run. If they lose to the Royals and Aaron Judge strikes out 11 times in the series, get out. The Yankee fans will hate him. Yeah. So, I mean, there you go. There's a lot of examples of that cap of just bad postseason play. Love it. It is. He's, I still think he is going to have some moment in the postseason where he's going to hit a big home run. Never the big. All right. There he is. Yeah. He's back. It's usually just the one to break through, right? Yeah. It's like we saw with. We just saw with Peter Lonzo. Bad September. Not good in the postseason. Then the big hit. Harry Carpenter. More postseason moments than Aaron Judge. Yeah. Tell us about. No questions. Oh, let's go. All right. Around the NFL is coming up next. Don't forget Albert Breyer at 835. Gene tennis went for two for 20 in the 74 playoffs with the athletics. But he made a great throw when he cut in front of the other outfielder and threw a strike. A ton of fly to the plate to nail somebody and everyone remembers that. That's right. Do your part. Do your job. Around the NFL is next on cap and Jhood. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitter at ESPN 1000. Cap and Jhood are back on ESPN Chicago. Chicago's home for sports. Pitbull sucks. He sucks. I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. I love the Green Bay Packers. The guy is from. But there he goes. This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. I love winning. He starts the comedy. This is a really thickly built guy. I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here? It's now time to go around the NFL right here on ESPN 1000. And straight beyond the ESPN Chicago app. And remind me, Gordon Whitmire had some rebuttal about our judge comments, Aaron Judge and Reggie Jackson. So we'll read those to you later. Who's Mr. October? He had a big hit. He had some good points. Yes. We'll get a stock football. Now, don't have me turn on Gordon now, because that's my guy. Oh, I love Gordon. You know how much I love Gordon Whitmire. What did I tell you about Gordon Whitmire? You love him. And? He's the best. Should have been in the front of the Tribune. You should have. That was the pizza columnist for me. Right there. Should have been Waker than the Waker news guy. Yeah. We will now go to around the NFL with Shane Orley. Shane? It's Tuesday hoodie, so it's the Don't Be Surprised If Edition. Oh, there we go. I'm going to start New England. Don't be surprised if the Patriots due to Drake May, what the Bears did to Justin Fields. The reporting this week, the Patriots are likely to make a quarterback change this weekend against Houston. Gerard Mayo finally admitting the quarterback play hasn't been good enough after they lost to the dead body of the Miami Dolphins. So let's contextualize this a bit. The Patriots gave Drake May a total of zero reps against said corpse of the Miami Dolphins. A spot where you could have eased him in. A team that's defensively banged up, doesn't get a ton of pressure. Would have been an easier spot for Drake May. Instead, you're going to debut him against Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter. Is this not the Bears debuting fields in Cleveland? It is. 100% is. You're correct. Same deal. Men better decide to block the Houston Texans front a whole lot better than the Bears did for Justin. They just wheeled Justin out there and says go get him guy. No chipping from the fullback, no extra tied in the block. Just our five against their five. Let me know that works. It didn't work out well. Eight or nine sacks later. You got destroyed. Don't be surprised if. Don't be surprised if the Broncos are quote unquote good. They survived the BONIX games where he looked dreadful and then got the BONIX 200 plus yard two touchdown breakout against Vegas to improve to a very surprising three and two. You have the AFC West where it's the Chiefs and everyone else and the Broncos might be the second team. The Chargers are beyond banged up coming off a bye week and the Raiders just lost to the Broncos looked totally lost with the batte Adams requesting a trade. Could the Broncos be second place team in this division? That is possible. Yes. And by the way, cap wasn't very high on the Chargers in year one of Harbaugh anyway. I was not. Thought it was kind of a transition to what they wanted because a guy that's a prolific throw in Herbert now has to be able to conform to run the football, throw it to the tight end Michigan football. Correct. I think that that's possible cap. They have a three game winning streak as Shea just laid out and Chargers, Saints Panthers are next for Sean Payton and the Broncos. Chargers, Saints Panthers. Yeah. They could get down a little bit of a roll. Pretty good. Pretty good, kid. And we were high on BONIX when he was drafted. It's a good football player. How old is he? 30? 34, two kids, a mortgage. Mm-hmm. White pick offense. Yeah, the facial wag. Did you see his pregame playlist? Yes. He talked about the music they asked, "What music do you listen to to hype yourself up for a game?" And he said, "I don't believe in hyping myself up." So I listened to my Christian faith playlist. Him and Kirk Cousins, probably. Are we saying playlist? Christian faith playlist. Hey, listen. Kirk Cousins is swag surfing in Atlanta. Kirk Cousins is cool now. Well, Atlanta has switched the script on Kirk Cousins. I think he has no other choice being in Atlanta. Kirk O'Chains is cool now. Christian faith playlist. Do you know, Jay Moore, if it is possible that they are playing creed in the strip clubs in Atlanta? I don't think they are. Oh, absolutely. Arms wide open. Arms wide open. Can you take me high? Are they playing a little chapel row? I don't know what they're doing there. I don't know. Can you throw in singles on the stage to creed? Actually, you know what? There's a special room for that, I'm sure. I'm sure if that's what you want it, you can play creed and have the dollars thrown at, you know, thrown at the feet of the young lady of your choice. Here's Shane Orland. Hoodie, don't be surprised if the Bengals win more games than the Steelers. These are two teams that are mirror images of each other. The Bengals are all offense. The Steelers are all defense. The big difference for me, Joe Barrow is playing MVP caliber quarterback. He's completing 73% of his passes for over 1,300 yards, 12 touchdowns, just 2 picks through 4 games. If that Bengal defense can offer any resistance in the next few games, Bengals can still save their season. Steelers feel like they're going the other direction. You know, one of these days, you guys are going to learn. You're going to learn about the Steelers, pal. One of these days. Yeah, it's not going well now, but you know what you saw there was kind of smoke a mirror, but it also is the magic of Mike Tomlin. You guys, you guys with the Steelers, you, you know, you and Cap just don't understand the magic of Mike Tomlin. It's all it is. The brother. You just want to know what the magic trick is, you two. How did he cut that woman in half with the song? Well, you're not supposed to know. It's magic. Just enjoy it. Yeah, but you guys just don't believe. It's Mike Tomlin. He's threatening them. Do you understand the dark room? He's making sure they're going to go 9 and 8 at the least. Tomlin. Justin, come in here. Just telling you. I don't want to see these issues any longer. I don't finish under 500. We click. He's saying, man. Nino Brown in the carter, huh? He is. He is. He's going to threaten them the nine wins. But you guys just don't believe the man every year with this. Tomlin's going to be fired. This isn't working. And then he gets to the playoffs and get bounced. Not going to happen. It happens all the time. Shay. All right, last one. Don't be surprised if this is just who the Chiefs are now. They're just going to win games ugly forever. Last night, four consecutive red zone trips where they failed to score a touchdown and included a missed field goal. It led the Saints stay alive way later into that game than they needed to. I think the Chiefs have just totally flipped who they believe they are. They're willing to let Patrick Moms turn the ball over knowing at the end of the game he'll be nails and they can win ugly with a dominant defense and spags leading the way. This is just who they are. A brutal watch that's going to win the game at the end. So I don't think you were here, Cap. I gave like a first take. You would have been proud of me. I gave like a take. Like I never give takes. Just opinions. You just. You want to just chat. We're just fun. I gave it a hot take though. I don't think you heard me say this. You ready? I think I said that the Kansas City Chiefs don't take the regular season serious. They're like the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. They just find a way to just muddle through the regular season and then they turn on the playoffs. That's what I said about Kansas City like it's not looking great, but they find a way to win games and they're not at their peak performance. But when you get to the postseason, that's when they turn it up. They're an NBA team. They are. That's probably a pretty solid take. Pretty solid. I don't think they win the Super Bowl this year. No team's ever won three in a row, so it's not really a hot take, but I don't think they win the Super Bowl. Doesn't this feel less fixable? Like last year they started slow. This year it feels a little less fixable. You've got Rishi Rice done for the year. Travis Kelsey, just the productivity's gone. Mahomes is not playing good football. And the reporting is the Raiders are totally unwilling to trade Devontae Adams to the Chiefs, who are the only team that have been willing to give up a second round pick. It just doesn't feel like their offense is fixable. They have to survive and they know it and they will. I'll never better get them again. Who never happens? Never again. It's Patrick Mahomes, man. He's the best. He's amazing. Shout out to Xavier Worthy, giving him the end zone and a shout out to his mom. Oh boy. Yeah. Doctor. Wow. How old was she when she had him? I don't know. 18. I think that's what they said on the broadcast yesterday. Yeah, well she's not much older than her 30s. Something along the lines, I don't know if you watched the broadcast. They're more like brother and sister than mom and son because of the age difference. But yeah, we're against the end zone. Yeah. The football to his mom. Yeah. His mom went viral. Yes. Oh. Doctor. Pretty good. Pretty good kid. Because you saw what I tweeted out there yesterday. Good morning, Mrs. Worthy. How are you? Okay. Good morning, Mrs. Worthy. Okay. Wonderful. Pretty good. Good to see you. Okay. It's pretty good, man. All right. Albert Breyer will get his thoughts about some of the nuggets around the NFL. That's next. Captain Jay Hood, weekday mornings, seven to ten. Captain Jay Hood are back. And you know this, man. Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. Oh. Football on ESPN 1000. Hello, Burt. Albert Breyer. Hey, Burt, senior NFL writer for SI.com. Joins, Captain Jay Hood. What? You're at Burt. On ESPN 1000. What do you mean I'm gay? We see that's the game. I just tag you and you're in until you tag somebody else. Albert Breyer. I'm not playing a game, I'm reading, and I'm not fit. Okay. On Chicago's home for sports. What Burt is it? Every Tuesday, at this time, we get a chance to talk to Albert Breyer from Amazon Prime and SI.com, and he's with us on the Hotline. Guy, it's Tyranata. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. I wanted to be Mike. Don't worry about the correct snake. Good morning, Albert. How are you? Good morning, guys. How are you doing? We are awesome. We've got a quarterback. This is a sending. We all knew he was going to be good, but boy, he was outstanding, and I know it's the Panthers, but you still have to look at him and like I was talking to hoodie about this, Albert. The second touchdown where he looks to the right, he looks off, he drags that safety over, and then you can almost, from another angle, see a smile, like, got you. And he goes right over the top with a great throw to DJ Moore where it's either caught or it's incomplete. That is growth, isn't it? Yeah, and I mean, I think, like, the biggest thing is the two touchdown throws to DJ Moore. Obviously, both of them were outstanding, right? Like, but you know, on top of that, they're thrown with instruction and rhythm as part of the offense. And we all know what he can do. You know, as far as scrambling and getting away and throwing some different arm angles and all the stuff that we saw at USC and Oklahoma, we know, right? Like, you know, he can do them at home stuff. What I'll really weaponize that stuff is if he's using it sparingly and he's doing it every now and again, rather than all the time, which I think, like, last year, if you go watch him at USC, he had to do it too much because the team around him wasn't very good. And, you know, I think learning how to play the position that way, learning to play with the offense, there's a reason why it didn't look very good the first few weeks because they, and look, like, I think the best way to describe this is, like, they took almost like a Colton 1998 approach to how they were handling Caleb, which you need to know your guys got confidence to do it that way, not every young quarterback can handle it, but they had confidence that he could. And what that approach is, is, like, let him go out and make his mistakes. Peyton Manning, I think, broke the NFL record for interceptions his rookie year. And, you know, it would have made a lot of other quarterbacks crumble, play that way. But the amount of reps and time on task, Peyton Manning got accelerated his development to the point where, in year two, they won 13 games, right? So the Colts were willing to go through bumps and felt like Peyton Manning could handle those bumps and would learn from them. And I think that's sort of been the Caleb Williams experience was, like, let's let him learn through it. Let's let him fight through it. Let's let him fall down and skin his knee a little bit. And let him grow up a little bit the hard way. And, you know, I think you saw a lot of things come together on Sunday. You know, you can do that, too, if you're the Bears, because you don't need a team that needs him to slope. You have a team that has to be in the slope. It's 300 yards every week to win a game, you know? Like they can win different ways. You know, we saw it against the against the Titans where, you know, it was a blocked kick and a blocked punt and a pick six. We saw it against the Rams in a number of different ways to go on brisker as the interception at the end to salt that one away. And, you know, now this week, you know, like you go out and so it's a 300 to win. So I think there's a there's good logic to the way they were going to do it. There's no guarantee that it's going to work, but it does seem like they turned a corner on Sunday. Albert, in your takeaways on SI.com, we ask you to go to SI.com and check out Albert Breyer as he goes through his takeaways and some of the highlights of this past weekend. What's the difference in the commander's weapons and the Bears' weapons? Because you wrote about Jane Daniels. I mean, it's one of the great surprises of the NFL, but why is he doing well and compared with the Bears after the commanders? Because, ultimately, these quarterbacks, you know, the way they're going to be able to flourish is because they've got weapons and difference makers that can help them out. Yeah. So I think they're very different situations. You know, like the commanders are in year one. The commanders are also doing a little bit more schematically to come to Jane Daniels side. And hiring Cliff Kingsbury was a move made to build an offense specifically for Jane Daniels. Now you're going to have to keep evolving that, but, you know, the commanders made a very real effort to meet them halfway. Not saying the Bears aren't doing those things. It's just the commander sort of did a wholesale, you know, in hiring Cliff and bringing in a lot of the college concepts to do it. And part of it is that they had to do that because their tackle situation, you know, in Washington has been a mess the last few years. And beyond Terry McClure and they don't have a lot at the skilled positions. And so they were going to have to win with scheme a little bit more. And I think, you know, because of COVID, because of the transfer portal, we're seeing this a lot more. They just had very different college experiences, you know what I mean? Like, you know, you look at like Caleb and, you know, Caleb played it to Blue Bludge, right? And until like Caleb's third year, Caleb was playing with, you know, better players than his opponents had on a pretty consistent basis. So whether it was Oklahoma or SC, like, you know, nine times out of ten, he was going out there with the best team in the field. Now I changed for Caleb in his last year, but that was his college experience. He only played three years. And he had, I think, under 30 stars. Jayden Daniels played his first three years, the Arizona State, where, you know, you had average talent around you. His second year, it was COVID. So he only played four games his second year. His third year, I mean, the Arizona State program was a freaking crime scene, you know, with all the stuff that was going on with the violations and everything else. Yeah. And then he transfers to LSU, where now all of a sudden he does have better weapons than everybody. So you got to see both sides of the fence, right? Like, so you got to play with a team that he had to sort of carry as a young player. And then he goes over to LSU. Now he doesn't have to do that anymore. He's a sort of league neighbors in Brian Thomas. And through all of that, played in two separate power conferences for the multi-year starter at two separate power five teams, started 55 games, played five years, had did not down, had to get back up. I mean, it's just a very different experience. So I just think Jayden Daniels comes into the league more prepared than Caleb because he's seen a lot more than Caleb does. And that's no fault of Caleb's, you know. But it's just a very, very different sort of thing going into the pro. So I would say, like, just because of all the different changing dynamics in college football, those two guys had very different college experiences. All right. I want to ask you about the upcoming trade deadline about a month away, November five will come back to Albert because could the Bears be active? That's an axe. Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitter at ESPN1000. Cap and Jay Hood are back on ESPN Chicago. Chicago's home for sports. More with our guy Albert, we're here at Cap and Jay Hood. So Albert, the Bears are banged up on the O line. They don't trust Nate Davis. He wasn't even the first guard off the bench the other day. The actor Bill Murray was in their plan. He was. And he actually was really, really good now to have a Jank, it's just banged up. So at the trade deadline or before, like the Browns, like they got salary issues with what's going on with Deshawn Watson. Is there a player, whether it's Cleveland or someone else Indianapolis, maybe? I don't know, Braden Smith. Is there an O line and that would be a major upgrade that they could use the Carolina pick or their second round pick their own and get somebody in here? I can't remember. Maybe you guys can help me out here. I can't remember the last time an offensive lineman, like a good, like a more than a backup was traded in season. Can you, like I just. When was Trent Williams traded? Well, he was in, that was, that was at the draft. So that was the draft. Yeah, that was like, that was April, late April, I think it was on the third day of the draft that he was traded. And that was like he wanted out, you know. And generally these things don't happen. Do not happen in season. And the reason why is because the Bears have the same problem that everybody has, which is there just aren't enough offensive linemen to go around, even good teams. Like even the really good teams have an injury and it can create a huge problem. So like I hate to like give you this answer, but I think it's just the reality of it is that like if you have good ones, you don't let them go. And so, you know, what you would be looking for is, is there some team that has a surplus where there's a offensive lineman on their roster. We might have liked in the preseason and maybe that guy is in a contract here. So team is willing to flip them for a pick. I mean, that's really it, you know. And so what teams have been really good at developing linemen, you mentioned Cleveland. Cleveland would be one. They wouldn't give you a starter, but maybe, you know, when Judrick, well, Judrick, well, Judrick, well, he's back in there. Now when Jack Conklin's healthy, could you get like one of the tackles who played for them over the last couple of years? And those guys have been hurt. Maybe it's something like that, but I can't imagine it will be anything more than that, you know. And even then, like teams are really reluctant to give up their depth of these positions because it's so hard to find. Albert, you know the quarterback that is always flying out of the radar? It's Trevor Lawrence. Can we have a definitive answer on what is Trevor Lawrence? That first year of Urban Meyer disaster and was happening with the ball club. Now they're one and four. They were able to beat the Colts. Like what is Trevor Lawrence in the NFL as far as the hierarchy of quarterbacks? It seems like an existential question there. Yeah. I feel like you're putting a big one in my plate here. What is Trevor Lawrence? Yes. This is jeopardy. It's jeopardy. Yeah. I hear what I would say. So, look, I, you know, I think maybe it's time to put about the idea that he was. And look, like I was first in line to say this, but like there's how he was seeing coming out. But, you know, like the Peyton Manning John L.A. thing, like there's only, he's a once in every, you know, 10 years type of prospect. We see the same things about Caleb, you know, like, and we'll see if he looks up to that, but it's a high bar. And I think that's part of the issue is that we've all been holding him to that bar. I think there is a bigger problem in Jacksonville. You know, so obviously, the first year that the year of Meyer issue. I think now, if you just look at the roster, I think they've paid a lot of good players. Great money. And that's a tough spot to be in. Right. So, Kristin Kirk, good players. He worth $20 million a year, probably not. Right. Cam Robinson, good offensive lineman. Is he the Trent Williams to borrow your example? You're building an offensive line around, probably not. And there are examples of this all over that team's roster. And so, I just sort of look at it. It's like, they're paying all of these guys, and then they're asking, as a result, Trevor to be Superman, and he hasn't been able to be Superman quite yet. Wasn't understandable this early in his career. I'm sort of starting to wonder, is the Trevor Lawrence story going to play out like the Matthew Stafford story? Does that make sense? Right. Like, where a lot of people watch Matthew in Detroit and refuse to, and kept divorcing him from his situation. Right. Like, they continue to say, well, Matthew hasn't been good enough for a number one overall pick. Is he ever going to be good enough? And, yeah, the reality was he was a really good player who was doing what he could. But it's just, you know, like the situation around him wasn't good enough to take him to the next level. And then he gets in a better situation and it really works. That's sort of where I started to think with Trevor Lawrence. There's like, is Trevor Lawrence sort of becoming what Matthew Stafford was in Detroit, where he's a good player, a really good player, and a guy who you can probably want to Super Bowl with, but he just hasn't been in the type of situation that can support him in that way. And again, like, there are very few young quarterbacks that can arise above their circumstances. The one I always think of is Andrew Locke. Like, where Andrew Luck didn't have a great situation around him early in his career, yet he was still going to the playoffs. There are very few quarterbacks who can do that. Like, we never had to see that from Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson, because those guys, they may have been able to do it, but we didn't have to see it because those guys were all really good situations. It's rare you find a guy who can overcome a bad circumstance. And, you know, I think that's sort of where Trevor Lawrence has been. Not a horrible circumstance for the last couple of years under Doug Peterson but not 90-01. Albert, have a great week, man. We'll be watching you Thursday night. I keep telling people that guy's a star and he's our friend. Well, thanks, guys. I appreciate that. I don't know if that's the truth. Thanks for saying it. You got it. You'll be a star when you put on the Will McDonough hat. When you put the hat on. Yeah, I know. I need to get the scalar cap here, right? Absolutely. I got to wait. I got to wait to get outside in particular, though. I don't know if it'd be appropriate to wear it my office. I look like Scoop's Callahan from the 1925. I did that. What does that dude do? Hey, man. Have a great day. Good week. Alright. See you. There he is. Albert Brad, little rider. Thunderbird. I don't know how to butt. Johnny. Don't worry about the correct snare. So, can we talk bears? Are you going to be here to talk bears? Or where are you going? I'm actually going to interview Laura Ricketts at the Chicago Sports Summit. Is she on the hotline? Is she coming off? Nope. Why can't she come on now on the hotline? I'm going to the Hyatt to interview her. Okay. Okay. We'll have a good day. Thank you, sir. So, folks, I want to make sure people understand what's happening here. Cap is going into retirement. And now he's just working two hour shows. That's usually what happens now. He's just cutting it off. He used to just work to full three. But now in his doodage toward the end now, folks. He's sun setting his own career. I'm working the full three the rest of the world. I don't believe that's true. So, cap just doing the two hour shift. So, we'll do the hood hour. That's next. And two minutes on the cap and jhood boarder show. Happy Jay Hood Board of Chil.
