He just started talking about his family He said just beyond that metal, there's a cold water stream Mother Mary dad right there when she was 17 And went to the Navy until true and dropped What was left of him came home He joined the labor union On the side Mama raised us kids. I guess that kept her occupied Because we came for a close for mending and hungry miles to feed The reasons to spend time down It wasn't easy, but it was good Everything we had was made from calluses and what I treat on my tomorrow's for one more visit Through Those simple bears are so nice But when the good old days were near I can close my eyes and still see us clear as day Worked into the last of that old sun had bled away And mama cleared the table and we'd set out on this way Daddy picked the guitar and we'd sing Then she said she got married and moved to Birmingham Mother joined the Navy just to be like his old man The hands of time kept squeezing until all the life was gone And wouldn't let but me to carry on It's not much of a legacy that I leave behind The times it's held together with just bailing wires wide But the memories look past just like a feather in the wind And I sure would have looked at you at all here It wasn't easy, but it was good Everything we had was made from calluses and what I train on my tomorrow's for one more visit through Those simple bearfoot summers But when the good old days were near Those simple bearfoot summers And the good old days were near Sunday are about the good old days and it kind of reminds me of The good old days and hometown and friends and neighbors and all of that And that reminds me of a special event coming up on Saturday in May it end It's what the hay fest and on the line right now I have Melody Barnes and she and her group have put it together again for us this year Hey Melanie, how you doing? Well, I know this is always a special event And the weather, let's talk about that first, is looking absolutely perfect for what the hay Oh gosh, thank you, it is looking like it's going to be sunny And relatively warm, so that's okay, but sunny is most important That's exactly right Okay, what the hay this Saturday and May it end, tell us the time on that start with So it starts at 10 and we will start with a message from our mayor We also have Michael Marcin band and Michael urgency that will bring the flags down And play the national anthem After that, we have our CC dance dancers that will perform for an hour or so Always popular, always popular, yeah Yeah, it's nice to see the little ones out there doing their jig And after that, we pretty much get into our bands We have a special surprise performance from Elvis this year And it's looking like he's going to be at 1130 So I know he's a big hit for a lot of ladies that love them some eldest Sure, oh yeah We have Hubert Wilson band, they're a Lancaster and we have the straight shot band from 4 to 530 And then that brings us to our big band for the 90s nation band, starts at 6 Oh wow, okay, that's quite a lineup of music, not to mention all the other stuff Yeah, yes, we have a lot of vendors, I think we're up to about 80 vendors Lots of food, vendors, and then arts and crafts, information booth Anything you can think of, it should be here on Saturday It sounds like it, yeah 80 vendors, well that's a pretty good number too, is that about where you normally are? Yeah, we normally end up with anywhere from 62 I think our top number of vendors has went to 90 before, but 80 is a pretty good number That really is, that's a good variety Anyone you need to highlight or maybe mention some of the sponsors, anything like that, Melanie? Well, our sponsors that we would like to thank is Ruger, Gil Danielorn, Michael Mills Good Smiles and Madam, 3rd Gen Services, 1st Bank, Hooker, Bill Coding and Striping Dan River Insurance and Avalon Salon, and then of course the Town of Madam for all that they help us Do to get ready and then make this day happen Sure, yeah, thank you sponsors, couldn't do it without you And that helps us come to this festival Absolutely free, no admission for all of the entertainment All you pay for is when you're shopping, so that's great, yeah Yeah, in our kids area we have a couple of bounce houses and then some games that will be set up and that's all free as well So hopefully that'll be an area the kids can enjoy Sure, yeah, okay, a little something for everyone there, and you mentioned when you get the kids out dancing And that's parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles and everybody there So it really is a kind of a family affair Yeah, and not to forget, you know, our businesses that we already have down paying on everybody I think pretty much plans to be open that day, so remember your local businesses that are here every day That's exactly right, yeah, shop local, support those Madam businesses And their places to eat right there, we've got, you know, a good selection there in addition to the food vendors And I'm thinking we've added new place to eat there in the corner in a new shop right beside Avalon Salon So if you haven't been in town in a while, some new places there Yeah, we have several new businesses, I'm really happy with how people are coming to Mayatan and bringing their businesses to Mayatan Yes indeed, okay, well anything else we need to mention Melanie Not that I can thank you, thank you for this Sure, well thank you and I said in the beginning, you and your team, it's a small team But it's a good and hard working, so I know a lot is on you, so thank you for And you've got business to run and everything else, so thank you for, and you're on Mayatan Town Council Meeting coming up Monday night as a matter of fact, anything we need to highlight on the meeting, I haven't seen the agenda Um, no, not that I can think of, just the usual town business Yeah, okay, alright, well I'll see you, see you for the festival, see you on Monday for the meeting, thanks Melanie Okay, thank you I appreciate it, alright, bye Bye bye Okay, Melanie is right there at Avalon Salon on Second Avenue in Mayatan, and what the hayfest is this Saturday So I hope you're making plans to get to that, and that's from starts at 10am ends at 9pm A lot going on at what the hay, and of course the hay bales, that's underway now, that starts The 1st of October every year goes through the entire month, so when you're in town, look for the hay bales all around the area And the businesses, the organizations, the individuals, and all of the people involved in that That's very unique, as is the town of Mayatan, there's only one Mayatan, and it's right here in Rockingham County And they're what the hayfest is this Saturday, and so as we said, the weather, perfect for that And I hope you'll be able to get to Mayatan for that Okay, well, I am featuring on today's program some songs from the new Darrow Mosley CD It's on Pine Castle Records, let's do one more right now He was standing by the front door, half a lively in his hands From all I would up in and says he seemed a gentle man Brand new to our town, and planned to farm and make a home And showed him cash he didn't need a blow As he started from a city, I hope for him I named He said his name was Howard, from a Missouri way Folked in my hand and thanked me for the credit I'd extend Soon me and Mr. Howard would be friends It was just a few days later, I saw the man again I had Sunday morning service with his Mrs. Walkin' in Said down and took a hamburger, and he shared with his wife, see Sing along to bringin' in the sheets Will he call himself a farmer, but it weren't much of a farm He built a race hole strike, in the field behind the bar He won that soul, red fox, and I never saw him lose And I never saw a challenge, he refused Well, the local gently lacked him, he was smart and full of sand And the lady stopped and he was such a very handsome man Will he ask a lot of questions, would he answer very few? A small town out top began to prove When they turned into a wildfire, but a whisper it began The rumor Mr. Howard was of an unwanted man Some heard him move with a farm drawer in the war between the state But there's heard him rub the Northfield bank From my famous city, held him as he cried I looked and did the creams on the day his baby's done I didn't see and I won't just decree them when did so Sometimes all that pain just takes, it's true And then once earned, he messes up And I feared something wrong, so I won't have to see him But everything was gone And if I took him alone, he'd change his mood, don't down the line Well, even just two tiny greys behind After that, I'd read about him, and then the paper, he was news And those little dimes don't know how to swear his legend quickly grew In this ancient contradiction from the man I used to know It's hard to make my mind believe it's full Well, I hope it wasn't true, the hope the paper's got it wrong It wasn't him to pop the floor shot now like a dog But it is true, he went on to meet a tragic end I'm still proud that Mr. Howard was my friend And I'm still proud that Mr. Howard was my friend Well, that's a good song That's Darryl Mosley, a new album just out on Pine Castle Records Long days and short stories I've got at least one more song from him But in the meantime, before I get to Amy Tilly And a live on-location report from Sandy Cross General Merchandise in Reedsville pulled out an OCD from J.D. When your friends are out to steal her Years are gambled And lost like summer wages And we'll keep a rolling on Until we get to Vancouver And the woman that I'm of is living there It's been six long months And more since I've seen her She may be gambled And gone like summer wages And all the beer taverns All down the long young street The dreams of the seasons Are all spilled down on the floor All the big stands of timber Just waiting for a foreign And the hustlers sitting watchfully As they wait there by the door So I'll work on them toe boats In my high slippery city shoes Which I swore I would never do again Through the grape of boundaries Where the cedars stand watching I'll be far off And gone like summer wages I'll be far off And gone like summer And gone like summer I'll be far
