Pretty sure this guy would have been big on TikTok, starting the inline skating violin challenge. We're rolling into a new episode of Cool Weird Awesome! I'm Brady, it's Thursday, October 3rd. We're in National Roller Skating Month, and we're going all the way back to the guy who created the first skates, and how it's maybe reassuring that even he had some trouble rolling along, just like the rest of us. He was John Joseph Merlin. He was a Belgian who invented a little bit of everything. Musical instruments, clocks, weighing machines, a revolving tea table. He put out so many inventions that he had to open up his own place to exhibit them all. He called it the Museum of Mechanics in London. In the mid-1760s, he put a set of metal wheels in a row on two shoes, and demonstrated these proto-in-line skates at his museum. The problem came in with what he hadn't invented breaks. The story goes that he was at a salon with other prominent people when he decided to skate through the room while playing a violin. He "impelled" himself against a mirror of more than 500 pounds value, dashed it to Adams, broke his instrument to pieces, and wounded himself most severely. Oops. In 1819, an inventor in Paris, Charles Louis Pettibled, filed a patent for what he called "land skates," which were trying to mimic what ice skaters could do. And in the 1860s, another innovation. James Leonard Plimpton of Massachusetts built a series of skates with wheels in a square layout that made skating a little more stable. Plimpton also turned a hotel dining room in Newport, Rhode Island into a roller rink. It was the first time someone had turned skating into a social activity. That was how skating first got popular. And over time, it led to people developing new skating-related sports like roller hockey, roller derby, speed skating, and most importantly, it led to the apex of skating, roller disco. You can learn more about the history of skates and skating at coolweirdawesome.com. Coming up, we'll tell you about an event where skates actually might come in handy. That's right after this short break. Ryan Reynolds here for Mint Mobile. With the price of just about everything going up during inflation, we thought we'd bring our prices down. So to help us, we brought in a reverse auctioneer, which is apparently a thing. Mint Mobile Unlimited, Premium Wireless, have it to get 30-30, get 30, get 30, get 20-20, get 20-20, get 20-20, get 15-15, 15-15, just 15 bucks a month. So, give it a try at mintmobile.com/switch. $45 up from payment equivalent to $15 per month. New customers on first three month plan only, taxes and fees extra, speeds lower above 40 gigabytes of detail. Welcome back. Starting tomorrow in Massachusetts, it's Sandwich Fest. This is a festival that celebrates the community of Sandwich, not the food with two pieces of bread and stuff in the middle. The festival has arts and crafts, family activities, a car show, and a dog parade. There's also Porch Fest, which is where you can stroll from house to house and listen to a wide range of live music. I'm Brady by chance. Do they have any roller disco? Thanks for listening and come back again tomorrow for more coolweirdawesome. ♪♪♪ Another helpful, Brady Carlson project.
