Episode 214 - Jon Secada
[MUSIC] Hey, everybody. Welcome to episode eight, what episode is this 214? Yeah, that's not too bad. Okay. Welcome to Dubnastalgia. I'm your host Naomi. My friends today are here with me to talk about the legendary Latin artist John Cicada. We're welcoming Corella back to the show. She's been a hit every time she's been on the show and she's such a fun co-host. So thank you, Corella, and our new friend to the show, Cheryl. You can find her at Rollie's reports. I will give you all the information on our Instagram, Altagra, and everything so you can check her out as well as Corella. But yeah, they're both big fans of John Cicada, and that is the guy we're going to talk about today. Here's a little bit of background information. Wikipedia moments. Please bear in mind that Wikipedia is not to be taken as actual 100% fact. Any donkey could edit it at any time. If I'm reading you the artist bio, that stuff is the real truth. Juan Francisco Cicada Ramirez was born on October 4th, 1961, and is better known as John Cicada. He is a Cuban-born American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He has won two Grammy Awards and has sold 15 million records, making him one of the best-selling Latin music artists. His music fuses funk, soul music, pop, and Latin percussion. Cicada has written songs for Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez. He is toured with Luciano Pavarotti and recorded duets with Jim Brickman, Olivia Newton-John, and Frank Sinatra. Cicada has performed several times at a capital IV, an annual independent state concert from the United States Capitol televised by PBS. Cicada was born in 1961 in Havana, Cuba. Cicada's father Jose was incarcerated for three years as a political prisoner to the communist Cuban government. In 1971, the Cicadas received permission to emigrate and moved to Miami. His parents opened a coffee shop. Cicada was raised in Hylia, Florida. In 1979, Cicada graduated from Hylia Senior High School in Hylia, Florida. During his performance of a Christmas Carol in 11th grade, he says he realized his musical potential and was encouraged by teachers to pursue music as a career. After graduating from high school, Cicada attended the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where he received a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music in jazz vocal performance. He graduated cum laude and was later inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the highest honor bestowed by the University of Miami. From '86 to 1991, Cicada was a teacher at Miami Dade College. In 1986, Cicada's University of Miami acquaintances introduced him to Emilio Estefan, a musician in Miami Sound Machine and husband of Gloria Estefan. Estefan listened to one of Cicada's demos and then became Cicada's mentor and manager. This led to Cicada becoming a backup singer for Miami Sound Machine. In 1991, Cicada co-wrote and was a backup singer for Coming Out of the Dark, a number one hit song inspired by a tour bus accident involving Gloria Estefan in 1990, in which her back was broken. In 1992, he released his self-titled debut album, which sold 7 million copies. In 1994, he performed a duet with Frank Sinatra, a re-recording of The Best Is Yet to Come, released on Sinatra's album, Duets II. He also performed at the awards for Miss Venezuela 1994. In 1995, he performed on Broadway in Greece. He also recorded If I Never Knew You, a duet with Shanice for Pocahontas. In 1999, he co-wrote and co-produced She's All I Ever Had for Ricky Martin. In 2003, he performed in Cabaret. He also co-wrote "Huromento" for Ricky Martin. From 2006 to 2009, Cicada was a judge on Latin American Idol for its entire four-season run. In 2007, he co-wrote three songs and performed in one on Lillian Garcia's album "Hiero Viva". I hope I said that right. In 2017, he released a tribute album with cover versions of songs by Betty Morei. Now, let's welcome my friends Carilla and Cheryl to do a nostalgia while we're going to talk all about John Cicada. Welcome. We've got Carilla is back. Carilla Cummings. How you doing? Good. How are you? Good. It's always fun when you're on the show. Nice. We get good ratings. Good. They love you. They love you. They love you. And we're joined by our friend Cheryl today as well. Welcome. Welcome. Thank you. Now, most of the people who have listened to the show know a bit about Carilla, but tell us once more, Carilla, about your music and, you know, what's going on. Okay. Well, I sing mostly soka music. I've released mostly soka music. Trying to turn that into R&B now, hopefully, with a little bit of a Caribbean edge because I'm a very proud Trinidadian. I'm singing for the elks, anthem, elks, anthem singer for the last like five seasons. Going strong. The Oilers haven't called me for their parallels, but you know, good luck to them. I could be the missing. Maybe that's why they're down to nothing is because you have been saying an anthem for them yet. They should have called me to to sing it with Ariana, but that's them. And yeah, just basically, you know, just doing things here and there in the city and looking to scratch my way out. Determination. Beautiful. Thanks, Carilla. Cheryl, I understand that your background is like in modeling and promotions and such. Tell me what you're up to. Oh, gosh, I know I always hate talking about myself. Carilla knows that background. Yeah. So I do my actual profession. I'm a social worker, but I do a lot of promotional work in the city. I love to support everybody. I don't even have like one thing I just I'm everywhere. Yeah, I'm not happy to be here. I've heard so much good things about this show. And yeah, I'm just excited to get into it. And my, my nickname, I go by Raleigh's Raleigh's reports on Instagram. She's a social light. She's an Edmonton social light. Yeah, she's popular. Yeah, she's at all the events. We don't know. I don't know how she gets to. Well, I know how, but the family car. But she, she gets to everybody's event. If there's 26 events all day, she's at all 26. She goes to 27. She finds another. Yeah, I believe in community. I love community. And I believe that Edmonton has a lot to offer. I know Carilla, especially like to get out, but I feel I'm a 10 people don't realize how much talent is right here. That's that's the part about it. That's sad that we because we have to go to other places because people don't recognize what's here. Right. There's so much, so much stuff that's good about YAG. So whoever's listening, y'all don't don't sleep on Edmonton. There's enough talent here. Yeah, that's true. And like I was like a rock musician for a long time in the city. Like I did like the rock band circuit. And so even genre wise, it's all over the map. All types of genres of music here. Mm hmm. Yeah, that's right. Um, the artists we're going to talk about today. One, one, John Cicada. Now, Cheryl is a big fan. Huge fan. Huge fan. So, now when we talk about like underdogs and people that didn't get the limelight, this man, I feel didn't get the limelight that he deserved because there's some songs on there like, if you notice when they come to karaoke, it's all about ballads. Like if anybody here in my, they must have seen who hurt Cheryl, because I always want to do ballads. And I have a conversation, Corella talk about the song Angel, but then I forgot about too late too soon. That just came to my mind as soon as I remember too late too soon. I know which album. Oh my gosh, give me which album that wasn't, but what's on the same note, I'm not sure if it's on just another day, where just another day was on, but too late too soon with such a nice, like, when he coming back too late too soon like yeah, the song is so beautiful. We're gonna have to play a clip of it. You're gonna have to play. I was like, man, I'm prepared to sing this thing, but I just remember, I remember the course, but I had to get leading up to it. But the video was so, you guys, the video was so passionate. That's the kind of songs that you'd be in the corner by itself. It's just like, yeah, I'm sitting here trying, trying to find the album. It's not off the first two albums. I'm not sure if it was just a single summer, but too late too soon. He must have handed that right to you. He felt like it. He gave you a special single. He made you always feel that you're the only person in the world. That's how I felt about him, because I mean, no time is very younger, so I was like, I shouldn't be even feeling that way. But when you go back and listen to stuff, just like his ballads was the one to be like, it just pierced, pierced right through. (music) The thunder was the night. (music) Took an early flight, brought you home tonight. Something wasn't right. I can't believe my eyes, I know I must be dreaming. Then I come home, too late, too soon. (music) How did you discover Jean-Sakada? You know, why that's a good question. Just in the '90s and hearing about R&B and ballads and stuff, because of my love for ballads, I was watching late night music videos on much music. And that came on, I was like, who is this guy? And then this is features, you know, he had this really like, his hair actually reminds me of my dad's. My dad had that kind of slip. Right? So very nice features and him being a black Cuban at that time is very rare with coming out with music, right? But this, like that. And his features and his presence and it's a passion. Every time he sang, it was always like, yeah, I felt like you're the only person that you're singing to. So by music videos is how I saw him. So I saw it just another day. And then when too late, too soon came, I was like, oh, but his stuff is always like the drama on it. They build up the intensity, it's like, I wanted to beat the woman in that video. He didn't call me John. There's more. He could always make another one. That's true. He can do it a reboot. I'm ready, John. If you're listening to this, I am ready for the reboot. No worry about yourself, brother. We were ready for the reboot. I feel like a picture myself like holding his face and his. There we go. He, uh, I did reach out to John Slicotta a couple of times over the last few years to see if he would be available to be on the show. He never gets the message. You know, he's a busy guy. He's a busy guy. Too late too soon. But don't worry. We'll find him. It's just another day. He's just there in Miami. He's there in Miami. That's right. So what's interesting about his story and his background, of course, like he said, he's a Cuban born. Uh, and his dad spent time in prison in Cuba. For trying to basically try to try to stand up for their beliefs and. Yeah, again, against them and, uh, they somehow made their way over to Miami. After they left Cuba. Settled in, uh, what's the name of that town? How do I pronounce this? Hylia. Hylia. The age is probably not even in there. Oh, yeah. Hylia. Someone's going to correct me and be like, Naomi, do your homework. Hey, by Havana has an age. And that's a good point that you said because I don't see see someone like him looking like me on the screen. But it's also another attractive moment thing that the person of color and, you know, and having this kind of video and, and this kind of outlet to bring music to the world was definitely. And so I probably, him and some other people were like the start of like thinking like, holy shoot, like we can actually see people like him on TV, which is really not during that time. Yeah. It was just slowly getting out of, you know, that time of racism racism, of course, it still continues, but, but that time it was really nice to see somebody on and with that platform. Yeah. What about you, Carla? Where did I find him? Yeah. Um, radio power 92 plays today's best music. Now show me my money. My money. I'm pretty sure it was on there, but like, I remember my mom had a friend. She had the CD and she gave us the CD. That was the one with just another day on it. Mm hmm. And of course, it's, you know, that was before they had the five discs. So you had to dedicate yourself to that one disc. Yes. The way music was meant to be back then. It's the whole album experience. You're playing it. That's all day. That's an all day situation until you press stop. So yeah, that's, that's kind of how I like, I discovered, not discovered him, but like, you know, got deeper into him. His voice, his voice is amazing. Like it's, it's so deep and rich. Mm hmm. And I really didn't know that he did all the things that he did because, you know, at the time, we don't have the internet. It really just seems like this guy did three songs and then took off. I know. Yeah. But you know, when you go deeper into it, like, you know, writing for JLo and. That's a difficult task. And Ricky Martin and Cheryl, you know, he wrote your song here. Which one? Coming out of the dark. Oh, I love that song. You're making me want to go to karaoke tonight. I have other plans when you make me want to sing. That's a big song. That's a big see that I'm trying to build up here that songs that draws you in and you feel empowered. Yeah. That was beautiful. That was a huge event in the early 90s when Gloria Stefan had her bus accidents and. Oh my gosh. No one knows. Like, I can now when he said that, I can just remember the video on the shoulder of coming out with the neck brace and everything. Yeah. She didn't know she'd even walk again. Yeah. And she debuted that at the American Visa cards on there. Never forget that. Yeah. Oh my gosh. She just brought like, honestly, she was because that was such a, yeah, I love her too. We can talk about her. But yeah, coming out like that was like, yeah, no, that's, that's a good memory that you guys brought up because my gosh, anybody that saw that. Yes. Yeah. Bring, yeah, the visual you just created is this. Now I'm going to try to see if we can look for that. Oh, seeing the one thing I didn't know is like, I learned yesterday was that he wrote that song that John Scott wrote coming out of the dark. It feels like him though. It has a John Scott of feel in it. And he, he did the backgrounds, I guess, too. They said, but yeah, did you know he was a former member of Miami sound machine. He's staying back up for her all the time, apparently, according to some documentary thingy I watched on YouTube. So he got super educated in music. Like he got like big time went to like the University of Miami attended the Frost School of Music, which is where he got a bachelor music in 1983 and a master of music and jazz vocal performance in 1986. So he was ridiculously, like, educated. And then he got introduced to Emilio Estefan. Gloria's husband. Yeah. Yeah. So he became the backup singer for Miami sound machine and a fan became sicada's manager and mentor and helped him to develop his career. Well, you know, they should make a documentary of the life of the background singers because a lot of people still go on from being in background. And there's a lot of people that did so much. But yeah, he's, I can see it like how Karla said, there is a john secada sound in the style. His stuff is like, when he starts off the beginning of the song, there's almost like a few interludes before even starts to sing and it just brings you in and you're just like, like what's happening the instruments right there. Yeah, now that time music videos were like well sought out there were like many movies. So, yeah, that's good. Good times. Very. Yeah. And so it's really impressive how he got his start and I feel like it's cool to see an educated musician who works so hard and spent so much money on tuition and stuff actually get a break because I find like a lot of the educated musicians end up just teaching music. Yeah, and sometimes even able to teach the way he wants to because the curriculum doesn't allow them to express himself. Hundred percent right you have to follow the. And he can't really get into the nitty-gritties of what they want want to see. Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 50 million records later he did something right. Yeah. Yeah. 50 million records but he's still kind of underrated and it comes to like. Right. Well, I was like 50 million. Okay. But the songs that we know. But we have to also remember that Latino artists they have a huge amount of records in their hometown right and by time they get to us. We think they're brand new but they've been they've been doing that. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, they have like Latin grand like they have a whole Latin world that we don't even. Yeah. We don't even know about like he's been doing the whole thing like this is why this man is still touring to this day. Like why he's busy and booked and can't talk to us. Yeah. There's two. There's real stuff out there that they're doing that almost like Kevin little like. Let me hold you around that song. Yeah. He's he's really not a one hit wonder. He has songs and like he like a not not a lot but I'm just saying like in the Caribbean we still. You know, he still has things that he could do. Yeah. There's a whole world out there for you. That doesn't. America. It's America. America thinks that they're the. Yeah. That's it. The world thinks you have to make it in America or you haven't made it. And it's like no. We got plenty of other things going on. We're, you know, we've built our own fan bases. You know, everybody does that. And that's what these guys do. Like John Cicada is like you said in the Latin community. Huge star. Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. You definitely can't walk those streets, you know, but. Yeah. No, he's I still would say he's under it. Like, I mean, I think about today, if anybody wants to try to bring as you see on TikTok and all this stuff, all these songs are coming back. I hope that somebody picks something like his on TikTok and just bring that back. Like, I would not really want to walk around and put Jesse other day on there and try to get these, because the new generation needs to know what that's from. Yeah. Because his stuff is, yeah, to me, it's timeless. Yeah, like you mentioned earlier, like the strength of his voice to like his vocals. Yeah. But it's strong, it's powerful. Yeah. So it rings in your ears. And like I said, you can just like close the eyes and this. And again, the beginnings, the interludes. And you could actually tell that he's he's musically educated. You could tell like his voice is very trained. It seems very. Oh, it's just, it's very trained. Like it has that technical aspect down there. Yeah, it's very disciplined and it's just so smooth and just nice. Just very nice, but you still have like the technical aspect of it. Like he listened in the class. Yeah. Yeah. The teacher said applied. To be a good singer, you kind of have that balance of the technical and the emotion. And I think like in a song like Angel, you can really hear the emotion in that chorus. Oh my gosh. Yeah, that's the thing too, like technical technicalities. But then he also has that range of motion to tell the story. Like to me, I feel like if he didn't have, let's say he didn't have a music video for that. Right. And he just saying that I can follow the style of whatever. I feel you can literally close eyes and put together a story because you can kind of hear the herd. You can hear the passion. You can hear the drive, whatever he's going through. Like, yeah, you can every aspect is this hit. Have either of you ever seen him live? Oh, no, man, I wish he never came. I don't think he's ever been this side of the board, has he? I don't even think we probably would have heard. I'm not sure you've been drawn to anything. I don't even think Joe Gloria. Maybe Gloria came in the 70s or something, but are in the 80s. But yeah, I mean, some machine never come this way. I feel they did. I don't. That's something we have to definitely check on. But I would have left him gone to all of that. She needs to put together a reunion tour. We we've had Snoop Dogg here about 46 times and we can't get a little glorious to find. Speaking of witches in Snoop Dogg here, like tomorrow or something. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. We're just getting all these recycled rappers. I would like to see like, like, can't Mary J Blige pass through? Can we get somebody? You know, everybody's putting together tours. That would have been on that bad boy tour that we didn't get to have because that's the time I'm being a member. Everybody was coming. That still hurts me. I'm like, everybody was coming. Everybody was coming. Everybody was coming. I have an outfit planned and that was. Yeah. They just pulled the plug on it. Literally the day of or the day before. I was still in the night. I think it was. Yeah. I never forget. I'm only in 10 o'clock. Then I was like, no, no, no, no. I can't be here. I remember. This is so denial. Yeah. My mom didn't want me to go. I was so happy to make that call to tell me, um, good news. Put your outfit right back. We're not going to get it. What's everything going on. We're really never going to get a bad boys tour. Oh, we're never. No, that's the end of that. This is why you got to get one of these trips to the States to see anybody I swear. We just got this beautiful new arena and they're not coming to play it. Come on guys. I know. I'm not going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. I'm going to get a good boy. Do you think if you go it would work? If you go, yeah. That's a nice one. It's mid to up tempo. It is both of them. The other one is as well. I know he likes to do the Spanish and English. That's a cool thing too. Especially his first two albums. What he did was he did the English and they got both sides going. That's wild. A lot of work. It's worth it. This is like a hits album. I wonder if he added it to the hits album as a new track. A lot of artists do that. I think I heard that on the greatest hits. I remember that time we used to get bonus tracks. We were just talking about that on the last podcast. We were talking about Madonna's immaculate collection. That's where she put justify my love and rescue me. Those songs on themselves were hits. Her first greatest hits. That album would drop out too. Even though Michael Jackson was called history. That had a lot of treats in there. It was almost like a whole new -- It was a double album. That one was mostly new songs. I don't love that album. There's always been full. Michael was pissed. He was mad when he wrote that stuff. At the industry and everything. It's like I just bought you guys out after. That's true. You know what? You see that? What's that moving shot? Michael. Oh, no problem. I just bought all of you guys out. No problem. It's true. Didn't he give them their music back? I don't think he gave it to them. Maybe it was in his way. Let's give this back to people. You should have heard your stuff. If you like your own music, you buy it. There's been a lot of that where somebody else will come along and snatch up your name, your songs, whatever, as you haven't already taken care of. That's as I've learned doing the show. As I learned doing one of the last interviews I did for the PM Dawn episode. Yeah. Those times being in the group and everything, that management, all that stuff was wild. You know, watching like GLC, all those kind of people at the end, you thought you made all this coin and next to knowing it's time to chalk up. Big zeros. Sister Perry took all the money. I nearly died when they pulled up in those RAV4s. I nearly died. I don't know. That's what you get. You make it all that funny and you pull up in a RAV4 bro. Listen, you see a RAV4 now is RAV4 now is big times. Yeah, but not if you're, not if you've just made no scrubs. That's true. Maybe that made the other additional vehicle of scrubs everywhere. Yeah, exactly. Right. Because it was the two door RAV4. It wasn't even the nice one. Oh, no. It was the two door. The basic. It's a basic edition. They got it. And she probably did. Yeah, she probably didn't even get them the world out of the automatic windows. At the crank handle. Yeah. I'm not in business. I'm not in business. And she's probably like, don't worry. I'll buy you guys CD players later. Yeah. I'll get them on the base a little bit, you know, I don't think of the factory stereo in there. Yeah. The factory. It's like what's it's distorting and everything. Yeah. Pass. Yeah. Three or past six notches. She probably got them the tape to put into the thing with so they could get a CD. A difference is connected to the tape. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Totally. Wow. We never even had the. You know, our car is growing up in my family. We never even had the tape player. I brought a boombox with me in the car. Serious with that kind of sense of my own tapes. Yeah. I want to listen to my tapes. Where did you put it? Like in the back? Yeah. Yeah. Just up on the back windshield. You just put it up there so the whole family can hear. Yeah. That's dope. So when I was DJ in the car. So you had to like go in the back and before you come out the car, you had to press stop. And turn it off before you let it run out. Yeah. Yeah. Did you ever forget? I'd leave it in the car. Back then we didn't get our cars broken into like we do now. Mm hmm. But also. But what's, why would you steal our car? It doesn't even have a cassette player. Oh, kill me. Also, we had bought a lot of D size batteries back then. Oh my God. Huge boy. That's a lot of power. Yeah, man. You get healthy with the battery, man. That's the year out. You're out. Welcome to my childhood in Gibbons. That's good. That's the best time has been. Yeah, it was good memories. Good memories. But yeah, back to John. Hey, I love going off on tangents. It's the best part of these conversation. Oh, you know what song I really love too is when he did the duet with Shanice for Pocahontas. If I never knew you. That's a nice song. Do you know that song? Every time I go into the sense like, oh, yeah, I love. I love duets. Mm hmm. Oh, Disney duets. She loves a Disney duet. If I love a Disney duet. Mm hmm. Yes. That's one of the, that's one of the lesser known ones. So I want to give that one props and get rid of that credit because it's a beautiful tune. And that's, that's the next thing too. Shanice is one of those artists too that. I mean, she didn't really get her. Flowers early. Yeah, she didn't get her. I mean, she had, I love her smiling. They stuffed the girl away. I know. And she didn't really get her. You're saying saving forever, right? Saving forever for you from the 90210 soundtrack. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's on two. That was another, like, where she's like, looking to my. And they say, there's all about those videos. Videos really mean like, oh, man, all her voices. I was supposed to pack tonight. Now I want to go to karaoke. We need to write down all the songs. She knows every time I have all these songs in my hand, I get down. Yeah. What am I going to sing, friend? I know. That is not right. Oh, that sounds so beautiful. Oh, and he, like you said earlier, he's done so much songwriting for people. He's he wrote. She's all I ever had for Ricky Martin. That was a big tune. That was great. It was a great song. Great, great song. There should be a list of everything that he's ever written. That would be nice to find. So he just, oh, yeah. That's true. It really should. Yeah, because I don't want to know what he wrote for JLo. Okay. Let's Google John Saccada song. John Saccada writing credits. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Man, he's smoking his cigarettes somewhere else now. Oh, he's stressed out for a boy. He's stressed. Yes. Yeah. Where he be eating them cigarettes. Yeah, because I'm pretty sure that he didn't know. That she comes with all that noise. What? Yeah, she must have gone into that super blind. Well, yeah. Time around. You know, like she probably makes it nice. Like you see all those, those pictures where they're kissing on boats and stuff like that. And then all of a sudden it's like, yeah, me and my kids are moving in. And she probably brings her a boila and all these people. Just coming into the mountain. Jennifer Garner takes her kids out. All the time. The kids are all friends. Oh, really? Yeah. Like Jennifer Garner took all the kids to Disneyland like last week or something like that. Well. J. Oh, she's a saint. That's good. If I'm coming to pick up kids is only mine. I mean, the kids didn't do nothing. So let them go long, boy. Yeah. Yeah. I just watched the movie the other day. What's that? Was there? I'm in the love to love in my life. No doubt that bright thing with the guy from Dumb and Dumber. It was nice. Her movies are always nice. Will you marry me? Will you marry me? It's nice. Who movies are? On Netflix. She seems like a new J-Loo movie. Yeah. Oh, no. She seems like a nice person. Like if J-Loo, so if she's like a horrible diva, she hides it really well. I. Yeah. I don't know. Remember what Mariah Carey said? I don't know her. I don't know her. Yeah. Wow. And I stand with Mariah. Oh, my God. And like she, I guess she wanted a song from Ashanti and all kind of stuff. I'm like the Jenny from the block thing that she's trying to cram down our neck. I don't believe that. I don't believe that at all. I get some money. I am no longer Corella from no block. I get extra $20. I'm not Corella from the block. That's true. Stop it. Stop it. Oh, I found the list of songs he's, he's written. So what did he say? Let me be surprised. Let me see the big ones here. Of course, coming out of the dark and do you remember can't forget you from the same album? Gloria's album into the dark, into the light. No, I don't listen. But I can't forget you. That's all I remember is the chorus part there. That's it. Let's see for other people. Oh, there's too late too soon. But that's him. Oh, he wrote too late too soon with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Oh, yeah. I can see that. That's cool. When you hear the instruments and that you can hear, you can see why and hear why. Is it a banger? Is it a beat track? No, it's not. It's a ballad. Is it a ballad? Yeah. It's sweet. But it has that, like, it has that, remember this piano, the times it has that. Toot, toot, toot, toot. Almost like, I only think of you. On to vacation. But that's kind of thing. Yeah. Okay. Let's see what else we got here. Why? That's all it's showing me. That can't be true. There's gotta be more. No, because the Ricky Martin song should be on there too. It is. It is. I was looking for like. Okay. Wow. With a letdown. I really got it all hyped up there. Maybe those are the only ones he wrote. It was for those artists. Yeah, there should be one for JLo. Maybe he doesn't want to cop to that one. Oh, he's on on the six. Oh, for real. It's called byla. So it's actually a Spanish song. Then I know because on the six, she was trying to relate to the hood. Oh, she, no, but she literally like took that train every day. Didn't she? Okay. Yeah. You're up in the Bronx. You took the six. Yeah. I mean, okay. Well, maybe not every day, but. You know what? If I get an album, if I ever do an album, it's going to be called on the LRT. Cause don't be leave everywhere that you heard. Exactly. Whoa. Oh, Amelia. I wrote this with him. With him. He also has done collaborations with some huge artists like Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra. I think. I can't remember one of those, uh, procedural war shows that they did that and do that together too. Hmm. And didn't he go on tour with Pavarotti? Was it Pavarotti? One of those guys. So let's talk about his hair for a minute now. Please. Don't forget I had that again. Reference to my dad. He had that slickness here, but still my dad is known for like, he has this nice cool peak. But yeah, he had his slick back and then they're just just right enough puff in the front. Yeah. Just to make it a little higher on top. Yeah. I like that. I love that hair. I don't think that hair has moved. I don't think there's one hair that has dropped out. I don't think there's one hair that has got out of place. All that hair is still where it means the same. As just a matter of way. Yeah. Yeah. Same hair cut. Same barber. We want to know what John's again. If you're listening, what is your hair care regimen? What do you. Will you put in there? That can't be no dark. Lovely. What is that? It's lovely. I wonder if we can email him that question and then see if he'll respond. What's your hair? What's your hair routine? Yeah. What's your hair routine? Because, I mean, not because you have the beautiful features and stuff like that. But the videos came on. I was like, this man's hair is fire though. It really is. I tried to click on his official website and the website. Oh, there it is. We want to see if we can. There is a contact part. What's on your mind? We want to go. We can book an engagement. Oh, is that what we would have to do? Yeah. Maybe if we book an engagement, maybe he does cameos. Who knows? You know those cameos where you buy. For those greetings. Oh, yeah. She won three Grammy awards, including one Latin Grammy, 20 million albums sold now, according to his official biography on his website. Well, but I wanted to see here if the poverty connection. Oh, don't forget. Do you believe in us? What's wrong with that? I know that we belong to you, believe in us. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That was his song. Yeah. You're correct. He did tour and collaborate with Luciano Pavarotti. He's also co-wrote and co-produced songs for Mandy Moore. Oh, I love a Mandy Moore. I, I literally this week just watched a walk to remember. And because I said so. And a walk to remember, I loved, I'll say loved. Because I haven't watched it in like 10 years. And now I realize it's full of. Nonsense. Teenage girls. But that's where I did two. She's cute. That's where I discovered that she could actually sing. Out of those girls that came out out of Jessica Simpson and. It was Brittany and her. She's a musketeer too. No. No, but I feel like there was four blondes that came out around the same time. Jessica, Mandy, Christina and Brittany. Right. Yeah. Did I leave anyone out? You said four. Yeah. But she could, I've, you know, Christina is a little bit too much. Like if this was Goldilocks, she's just too much. Brittany is just. That's right. Too little. And you know, Mandy Moore is just right. And Jessica, one of my Jessica. Jessica is just screechy though. She was a little screechy, but like sometimes she could sing pretty good. Jessica Jessica. Jessica Simpson. Yeah, she was doing her thing. Yeah. Yeah, like she, but you're sitting there and you're doing your thing. And then all of a sudden you come up with that song with the Daisy Dukes and like nobody knows what happened to you. Like wow. You can take her seriously. No, I think this one is a little good in them pants. You know, very well. Yeah. But you were, remember she was the purity ring people. They were the purity, her and Mandy Moore were the purity ring people. And then I watched because I said so and I'm like, what happened to your purity ring girl? Like what, what is happening here? You come up. She just wore it as a belt and that's all. She just wore it as a belt. Don't kill me. Mm-hmm. After these messages, we'll be right back. Yeah. Hi. If you enjoy Dope Nostalgia, thank you.
