Deets and Watson's been making meats and cheeses the right way since forever. What's that mean? It means never cutting corners, ever. It means cooking, not processing. It means our Virginia brand ham that's cooked to perfection, then twice baked to layer the flavors. It takes more time, but you can taste the difference. We come to work every day to do it the right way, even if it's the hard way. Because if it's not right for us, it's not right for you. Deets and Watson, it's a family thing, since 1939. Out of our control, I mean, you know, you can do whatever you need to, to try and prep your house, your home, wherever you're at, other than that, it's nothing really you can do. You have to go to Florida and just safety first and getting everybody out and hopefully everybody will listen to the mandatory evacuation. So compartmentalizing one step at a time of the preparation part when it comes to the storm. And then, you know, once we're out of there and realizing that, you know, this could be sort of Sunday to give the people of Florida and especially around our area some hope, something look forward to watching, whether it be, you know, not expecting anybody to really have power, but finding out the days later and go from there. That's Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield on the latest hurricane to strike Florida and Milton made landfall as a category three storm overnight. Tampa avoided the brunt of it. And if you pay attention to the news and the run up to a hurricane, it constantly changes where the storm is going to make its most immediate and pronounced impact. And for a while this week, it kind of felt like New Orleans two thousand five. And I remember just having 19 years ago, it was late August, early September, this sense of dread that it's going to happen that New Orleans is going to bear the direct brunt of a category five hurricane. And I remember constantly checking the news. Is it going to deviate? Is it going to go there? Because obviously what makes it worse from New Orleans is the city's below sea level. So any storm surges much worse than it would be anywhere else. That was kind of the same vibe I had. The Tampa was going to take a direct hit from a category five. It was a category three by the time it happened. It wasn't Tampa. We're going to have Tony Dungeon later in the program and get some insights from him on how things have gone. It's just as it's happening. And I think it creates anxiety for anyone in the entire country, even if you're well removed from the zone. Can you can you imagine this reality that periodically you have to board up your house and get out and jostle for gas and sit in traffic and when do we go? When do we not go? When do we are we overreacting? Are we underreacting? Is it going north? Going south? Is it coming for us? The only thing I can compare it to when I was a kid we lived in a floodplain and once a year or thereabouts it rained enough that we had to worry about our basement being flooded. So you'd wake up in the middle of the night they would go around with a police car with a the bright light that they use and and megaphone or however they projected the voice waking everybody up saying there's a flood warning and you'd get up and you'd get all your stuff out of the basement and you had to do it like that. This is something that lingers for days and days and days and I can imagine during hurricane season you're constantly constantly monitoring where's the next storm which way is it going to go? Oh good and you're just pins a needle so I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it because I'd be constantly obsessed with where's that next storm which way is it coming when do we need to pack up and go what do we need to do when do we need to do it. It's just this source of anxiety that is always there so it hit not Tampa but it's still hit and it caused a lot of damage and we're going to hear about people losing their lives that's inevitable in a situation like this and we can only hope for the absolute best and above all else peace of mind comfort healing and resolve for the people who have to deal with the aftermath after they were dealing with the aftermath of the last one. Helene not that long ago which affected a lot of areas in the southeast now they had to deal with and we'll have to deal with the aftermath of Milton this is a Friday edition of not Friday Thursday edition get my days right Thursday edition of PFT live I am flying solo today although as I mentioned Tony Dungy will join us coming up later in the program Shreen Williams in about a half hour or so to get you ready for the 49ers Seahawks game tonight week six begins tonight the season is rocketing by as it always does Charles Robinson later in the program as well senior NFL reporter for Yahoo will talk about some of the bigger issues in the ligand and obviously the thing that continues to hover over the entire national football league is the Robert Salah firing from two days ago plenty more to talk about there but since they make me do this by myself I get to talk about whatever I want to start the show I will point out there are two times of the year that can make for an uncomfortable show more than just you know the general sense of awkwardness that emanates from the program for me personally uncomfortable it's the day that I realize I should have turned the air conditioning on and it's the day I realize I should have turned the heat on because it got a little cold last night and you probably can't see my breath but I'm glad I wore something with a little a little extra material in it because this is the day that I probably should have thought to mess with thermostat and get some heat pumped up here in the official PFT studio which happens to be a room above my garage another thing I want to point out and I got a story to tell real quickly because we we got time to get to everything and even if we don't we got two hours we'll talk about whatever we talk about in two hours so one of the things I like to do when they make me do this by myself is to push some of my other projects if you haven't seen it yet if you haven't heard about father of mine mob story set in 1973 in the town where I grew up in northern West Virginia my dad was a book he connected to the mob there this is inspired by some of the things I actually learned 1499 for the original by the way the sequel is out son of mine picks up exactly where father of mine left off but I got a story about father of mine a couple of weeks ago it was my dad's birthday he would have been 102 or 103 it's kind of hard to lose count once you get passed 100 it's kind of hard to lose count he died in 1997 98 rather hard to remember that the farther you get removed from the passing of a loved one and it was go it was his birthday and it just brings back memories and and it ties into these books and I wrote something about him I still think about him all the time when your parents pass on you don't realize how it changes you until it happens if it's happened to you you know exactly what I'm talking about if it hasn't happened to you it's just a glimpse of it just changes your existence it's like any other major event you know when you have a child it changes your existence when your parents pass on it changes you permanently and and that's just the way it is there's no other way to put it it changes you permanently and you find yourself thinking about them you find yourself dreaming about them more than you ever have at least that's been my experience but anyway whatever I wrote about my dad that day moved someone who is a regular pft reader a person of fairly considerable means who and I'm not gonna I'm gonna keep that part of it myself but this person was so moved that this person decided to purchase ten thousand dollars worth of father of mine in print and they're downstairs in boxes 600 plus copies of father of mine for me to donate as I see fit so I'm looking to unload about 650 copies of father of mine for free and I got to figure out how best to do it so I've been giving some of them away on weekends I promised to give away ten this past weekend and I made vague reference to the fact that I have a surplus of copies of father of mine so I'm gonna be looking for more ways if you want to read it you may get a free one and now I'd rather you buy it I'd much rather you buy it but there's been about 650 of them already bought that aren't spoken for they're right below me in boxes and I don't think my wife's real happy about all the boxes so time as they say is of the essence I need to I need to find homes for these 650 books in boxes stacked in a spot where we could find room to stack all the boxes so help me out please take some of these off my hands please and I am finding some ways locally and being creative about ways that we can possibly get these boxes out of my garage but incredible gesture blew me away as great and and really I I just want people to read it and enjoy it as I've said before if you have a good book to read it's similar to the escape that football gives us life is hard enough we get through the stresses we get through the things that are mundane and boring and it's every day and you have something to look forward to if you're reading a good book it gives you something to look forward to when you have a moment to read a chapter to take a break to just look forward to oh I remember that story left off oh I gotta pick it up I'm gonna read a little bit more it just helps carry you through the the things in life that you need to have something that will carry you through to the other side okay now by the way I didn't mention the Buccaneers have indeed evacuated to New Orleans and they they will be playing a play the Saints there this week I believe I think that's true yes okay oh and now oh oh now Pete's already putting in some ideas on how we can get rid of these books thanks well we'll we'll we'll we'll brainstorm we'll come up with ways to get rid of the books and it could be one of those situations where first prize is one copy second prize is five copies you know how that goes okay so let's get to it because there continue to be developments I'm going to get emails from people why do you keep talking about the Jets firing Robert Salah well because they're continuing to be developments that's how this goes we we we take it our cues from where the news flows from if nobody was talking about it there wouldn't be reason for us to talk about what was said so I remember sitting in this spot on Tuesday in the aftermath of Robert Salah being fired saying oh the weekly Tuesday Aaron Rogers visit to the Pat McAfee show suddenly takes on a lot more significance because roughly two hours after Robert Salah was fired we're gonna hear from Aaron Rogers about what happened as it turned out he didn't happen Tuesday and there were people who immediately thought oh he's got to collect his thoughts oh he's got to get his lies straight they had a team meeting and it's they're on a different schedule this week because they play Monday so Wednesday is like Tuesday in a normal week so it made sense for him to bump it to Wednesday so so without further ado Aaron Rogers talking to both Pat McAfee and AJ Hawke about the Jets decision that shocked everyone to part ways with head coach Robert Salah here it is I love coach Salah we have a very solid relationship we have since you know I met him in 2021 and had a nice conversation when they came and visited us for joint practices he was a big reason why I came to the Jets you know I felt like the team you know was a solid team had a relationship with coach Hackett obviously and I really liked coach Salah as far as any of the ridiculous allegations out there I'm not gonna spend more than one sentence in response to it and that is that I resent any of those accusations because they're patently false and and it's interesting the amount of power that people think that I have which I don't what you know why we think he has the kind of power that we think he has because they moved heaven and earth to get Aaron Rogers in early 2023 reading you know Connor's book out of the darkness the mystery of Aaron Rogers Woody Johnson the owner of the team Christopher Johnson his brother who took over while Woody was the ambassador to the UK Joe Douglas the jam at the team the team president and Robert Salah all made the pilgrimage to Rogers house a jar of honey from the Queen's garden was offered by Woody Johnson to Aaron Rogers they genuflected at the altar of Aaron Rogers to get him to want to play for the jets and then once he did what did they do they started bringing in members of the Aaron Rogers friends and family program Randall Cobb who would have signed Randall Cobb last year but for the New York Jets having Aaron Rogers Alan Lazard who was a horrible investment once Aaron Rogers wasn't there he's providing a return now that Rogers is back playing this year but you know there was a sense that the Jets were going to to give Aaron Rogers what he had always been looking for in Green Bay and I was reminded as I watched the Aaron Rogers interview with Pat McAfee of the press conference that Aaron Rogers did in July of 2021 that was his NFG remember that from the other day Travis Kelsey's at the NFG stage of his career where he was lateral the ball wherever the no F's given that was when Rogers and it was stunning Rogers just aired grievances and called out the front office and they treat the players like they don't really have any say and you need to you need to take advantage of my years of experience etc we're gonna track down a clip from that just just so you can get a sense of what Aaron Rogers wanted and I say that because there's a couple of ways to look at this okay he'll say I had nothing to do with it it's patently false I resent the suggestion I didn't need to do with it fine let's let's accept that is true let's accept that this wasn't a situation where Aaron Rogers caught wind of the fact not rumor not in your window not supposition but fact that Robert Solic convened a team not a team meeting but a staff meeting on Tuesday to announce that Nathaniel Hackett would be demoted and that taught downing the passing game coordinator would take over play calling and that in the end Hackett really wouldn't have all that much to do let's let's assume that Rogers didn't catch wind of that and immediately mobilize to both save Hackett and throw overboard the guy who was trying to throw Hackett overboard let's assume that didn't happen we're given the benefit of the doubt Aaron Rogers had no idea anything was happening let's accept that to be true because that's the vibe that they're trying to put out there I haven't seen it said with a hundred percent clarity but that's the vibe they're trying to create Aaron Rogers didn't see it coming Aaron Rogers didn't have a heads up Aaron Rogers had no input in the question of whether or not the coach who according to Rogers one of the big reasons he chose the Jets he had no input and whether or not Robert Salla would stay or go let's assume all that is true let's assume a hundred percent of that is dead on balls accurate as one of my favorite movies declares sorry Manchester does that make sense to you given what we know of Aaron Rogers given how pissed he was and how the Packers had an attitude top to bottom players play we'll handle everything else not the players job to tell us which players should be on the field with those players it's their job to go out and play with whoever we give them is their job to go out and be coached by whoever we hire to coach them we don't listen to the players we make the decisions and there was I think kind of a rudeness in how that was communicated to Rogers or maybe it wasn't he's just overly sensitive and he thought they were being rude who knows we know this he was very pissed at how the Packers handled their business when they didn't seek his input on things so do we really think that Woody Johnson fired Robert Salla without either giving Aaron Rogers a heads up or seeking his input do we really think that happened I mean I want to drill down to the heart of this ask yourself that question if you follow the NFL closely you've picked up enough over the years where you can come to a reasonable conclusion based upon the available evidence based upon everything we know about Aaron Rogers ask yourself that question do we really think that Woody Johnson would fire one of the guys who made the pilgrimage to Aaron Rogers personal Mecca to get him to join the team where Rogers has said the head coach is one of the reasons why he picked the jets do we really think Woody Johnson would abruptly and unceremoniously fire Robert Salla without giving Aaron Rogers advance notice or seeking his input I don't believe that now and this is where we get into the word games that Aaron Rogers likes to play yeah I've been immunized once you stretch the rubber band that far it stretches back there again now I didn't I didn't get him fired no but you didn't save him that was my big reaction yesterday I didn't get him fired I resent the implication that I got him fired fine but you didn't save him and you do have the juice I mean look one of the first things we think is oh he was coming for Nathaniel Hackett and Rogers saving Nathaniel Hackett because we know Rogers loves Nathaniel Hackett he'll do what he has to do to save Nathaniel Hackett to the point where some people think that once Rogers caught wind of the fact that Hackett was being demoted he made a phone call and the next thing you know we have that exclusive video that we had to work very hard to obtain of how things went down with him with Salla you know being ushered into the room with Aaron Rogers so and right on cue there it is see if that's very accurate 100% I think we're gonna win some sort of a prize for I don't know I don't know what computer system we hacked to get this video but I'm very impressed by our journalistic capacity so it doesn't make sense and I think that's the ultimate litmus test for anything where we're trying to parse through reports and rumors and words and claims I mean Aaron Rogers isn't gonna come out and say yeah you know what he told me he's thinking about making some big changes and I said do what you got to do I had a former head coach reach out and say you know the theory that you know because that's how it goes they go to players and players don't say go ahead and fire the guy though you say don't do it or do what you got to do right doesn't that make sense you don't want to have your fingerprints on the gun do what you got to do don't do it or do what you got to do and the idea that Woody Johnson just did this without regard to Aaron Rogers and and if he did and this is where common sense activates as well if they really did it if they didn't tell him if they didn't seek his input sure doesn't seem very upset about that which would tell me that either he knew and had input or he didn't but he's fine with the result anyway what needed to happen I'm not upset it's coincidence oh you didn't reach out to me ahead of time that's fine you did what I would have told you to do anyway or what I would have not told you not to do so yeah and and that may be why he laid it on really thick and what he said at the outset it's accurate but it's part of the business you know I'll hear that from time to time you're dealing with human beings here you're dealing with families here you know people they have to that's the job that's why you get paid so much because when you sign your name at the bottom of that contract you know there's a chance that that contract is going to be without notice ripped up and you're going to have to move and your family's going to be affected and you got to wonder what they're going to say to your kids at school that this isn't some unique development it happens everywhere at one time or another and again it's what they sign up for we talk about what players sign up for from time to time what coaches sign up for when you're in that world you get paid a lot of money to be in a position where you could get fired at any time hell this guys on the staff get paid a lot less who can be fired at any time that's another part of the oh go easy because it's got a staff and they may look that that's this is the life they've chosen this is how it goes you never unpack your boxes whether they're full of cutlery or 600 copies of a book that you're trying to figure out how to unload you move from here to there your if you're in a place for three years wow we haven't had to move for three years imagine that that's the job you love the sport enough that you do all those things so I feel like that gets used as a shielded times to obscure from other issues and I thought it was kind of convenient that Aaron Rodgers man of the people humanitarian spending a lot of time filibustering about the impact of this on Robert Salah without ever having and I'm not folding Pat McAfee and AJ Hawke for not pushing him on this I mean really I there's a point where it becomes a little much and there's a point where it becomes awkward is a point where he decides you don't want to go on the show anymore we know about Aaron Rodgers and his affinity for safe spaces if he safe spaces suddenly become unsafe he's not going to go back to them but when we apply common sense to this when we look at the broader situation and circumstance I think we come to the conclusion that he didn't seem particularly bothered by what happened he's definitely not bothered by the fact that they didn't give him a heads up or seek his input given what we know about his frustration with the Packers that doesn't make sense I think at the end of the day again either they sought his input and he said do what you have to do or they didn't and it's coincidental that Woody Johnson did what Aaron Rodgers thought Woody Johnson had to do now on that point there's another little fact that I think is is interesting it doesn't fit with the Salah was going to demote hack it as of Tuesday morning and Rodgers intervened to stop it from happening because that was Tuesday it was a conversation on Monday between Woody Johnson and Aaron Rodgers here's Rogers from Pat McAfee show talking about a phone call yes a phone call he received on Monday night from the boss the ambassador Woody Johnson yeah I did talk to Woody what he called me on Monday night we had a short conversation I appreciated the call it was a genuine call and he just asked me how I was doing you know obviously I got rolled up on the game and you know my ankle got pretty banged up so he just called and was asking how I was doing and you know we talked about the game and how at this point I was in my performance and that I'm going to play better and we're going to get this thing turned around and then we hung up to that point you know Woody has no obligation to let me know of what his plans are whether or not he knew what he was doing in that moment is inconsequential I just appreciated the call that he was checking on me it was just like a friend call like you would do hey man I saw that hit in the game you know he doing okay and we had a nice short five minute conversation and then that was that okay so everybody blindsided Tuesday by this decision seemingly then well I was I mean I was in the training room doing rehab and it's one of those things like in a John Wick movie is the best way to equate it where John Wick becomes ex-communicado and then everybody at the Continental's phone starts vibrating yeah it was it was kind of like that kind of like that he's making the impression that he had no idea it was coming this whole idea of what he has no obligation to let me know what's going on no he has no obligation to do it but when he doesn't do it that's the kind of thing that could piss off Aaron Rodgers because we know it pissed him off because that was how he was treated by the Green Bay Packers and the Jets acting like the anti-packers from the get go it just doesn't fit with the idea and this is why we all think Aaron Rodgers is in charge and I keep coming back to the 30 million 35 million whatever it was he gave up in salary you don't give that up no strings attached you could give that up to further cement the fact that I'm an equal partner here I'm giving up a lot of money and so I want to be treated accordingly I want the respect that comes from big decisions if you're gonna make them keep me in the loop I'm part of this I'm not just an employee I'm a manager to and you got to keep me in the loop on these things so I think and again we're talking about a guy who has a proven track record of playing word games to tiptoe around the truth I think there's enough there for us to come to the reasonable conclusion that number one he knew it was coming and he had input and whatever ultimately happened he accepted or number two he didn't have input and somehow it was all one big coincidence I think it's the first one and again that's not just a wild guess that's an informed decision made based upon all the relevant facts and circumstances including the particular way in which Aaron Rodgers as we know likes to be involved in big decisions that a football team would make now there's still a question about the future of Nathaniel Hackett and there's still a belief that maybe Hackett won't survive short term or long term let's hear a little bit from Aaron Rodgers on how he currently feels about his offense coordinated Nathaniel Hackett. Well our relationship is great it always has been and always will be I think you know that there was going to be some things that needed to change regardless of you know what happened to Robert and you know we just haven't been playing consistent football on offense I know there's a lot of things that were swirling out there but at this point you know Brick and I have talked a couple of times and yeah I'm on board with whatever he decides as far as the offense goes and I want to do what's best for the team and we're throwing our support behind Coach Albrook and whatever he believes is best for the team is what we're going to go with. There has to be some change you know even just as small as change to we need our players to take accountability for what's happened I think that's the thing that hits you too in the moment is if I'd played better on Sunday this doesn't happen and as somebody who takes a lot of pride in their performance that was the main sentiment for me yesterday the players are the ones out there playing and you know we need to be accountable for our performances all of us first and foremost and we got to fix that part. It all makes sense and you know I look at it this way if Aaron Rodgers did have any involvement in the decision it was made about Robert Sala he needs to act in a way that he's deferential to everything. Whatever they decide I'm fine with it. It helps prove after the fact that hey I didn't have any input whatever they decide I'm fine with it. It may be just how Nathaniel Hackett is handled what kind of a soft landing he gets is he still around is he still involved how are we going to do this. So it's all to be determined I still think it's not going to make the Jets better per se if anything it stresses the defense because you remove Robert Sala from the mix and you take the coordinator and make him the head coach they've got less defensive coaching brain power and just overall man power as they move forward but it's going to be interesting to see what happens. Okay we need to take a break. Shireen Williams is ready we're going to talk about Thursday night football we're going to maybe talk about some other things you'll see as well I what PFT live continues right after this. He's still a writer. He's never not been a writer. He's still a writer. When he's healthy and he can play he'll play him. He's just not healthy right now and he's getting closer and he's working every day to get that hamstrings right. He's in the right of the headspace mentally. We talked recently and got a good conversation and he's ready to play football. Once a raider always a raider but he no longer wants to be a raider and it's just a matter of time before he gets traded three weeks and five days until the window closes. Shireen Williams with us now to talk about that. We'll get to the Thursday night game in a bit. This Devontae Adams thing Shireen still hovers over the national football league. It hovers over the raiders. I don't know where he's going to go but I know this. For every week that he's there the raiders are cutting a check for $983,000. Mark Davis would rather not do that. At some point they got to decide do we stop the financial bleeding and take what we can get or do we continue to hold out for more than what we've been offered. At some point they're going to have to make that decision and if they wait through four more weekends they're going to be out almost another $4 million. There's no doubt Mike that they want to do this sooner than later just for the simple reason that you said they're paying them money and also as Antonio Pierce said that hamstring is getting better so he's about ready to play. So then that creates is Devontae actually going to play for him. What are you going to do with him if he doesn't want to play for you if he wants to protect himself protect that hamstring until he gets traded which I could understand him wanting to do that. She have all sorts of dynamics here going on that says this needs to happen and it needs to happen fairly quickly. You would think it would happen on a Monday or a Tuesday early in the week so that the other team doesn't have to pay him that million dollars for that week that he's not going to play. They want to get him in there and get him playing so you would have to think that the deadline is early in a week to get him on your roster get him ready at least be a limited player for you on that Sunday the next week but this has got to happen. You're right about the timing. You want to have maximum opportunity to get him ready to go if you're going to be taking on his salary. Now the other side of it to get what the Raiders want and they still want some are reporting a package that includes a second round pick. I believe based upon the things I've heard that a second round pick would do it that that that other stuff is something the Raiders would quickly abandon if they could get someone to offer them a second round pick they haven't even gotten there yet and there's a thought they're not going to get a second round pick unless you're in they agree to pay a large chunk of the remaining salary that's due at nine hundred and eighty three thousand a week you could drop his salary all the way down to the minimum trade that pro rated minimum obviously at this point pay him the rest that gets you a better trade package because you aren't just getting the player you're getting a better deal from a cash and cap standpoint or they're going to have to send picks with him Devontae Adams and a five Devontae Adams and a four that's how you're going to get a two if you're determined to come out of this with a second round pick they're going to have to be creative and they're going to have to be flexible because the leverage that any interest the team has serene is to just say fine pay him another game check and we'll do this again next week yeah and it's like that with any player Mike with the high salary the more money that the team takes on that's trading him the better the package is going to be the Raiders have the cap room so this makes no sense to me that they don't want to take on some of this I would take on as much as I possibly could afford to get the better picks to get the better package for him whatever they can get it's going to be better the more money they take on so that's what they want they shouldn't care about the salary cap this year they've got plenty of room what you want is to build a team and to build a team you need as much as you can get from Devontae Adams who by the way cost you a first round pick and a second round pick for three years and the other reality too is he's in his final year with the Raiders I know he's got two years left under contract but that contract was negotiated to have a significant jump in the salary in 25 and 26 35.64 million each year that got the average to 28 the real average of his deal was three years 229 the phony baloney back end years got it to 28 those years are going to be torn up so you're looking at cutting him after the year getting nothing for him when you cut him you only get compensatory draft picks when you have players leave via the normal free agency process with their contract expiring if you cut him you get nothing if you fail to trade him before the deadline you get nothing all you can do after the trade deadline is cut him and hope somebody claims his contract on waivers so you don't have to pay him for the rest of the year so the clock is ticking three weeks and five days to go before that window shuts they'd be crazy not to trade him and the one factor that we need to keep in mind and this is the Carson Palmer factor we'll go back to 2011 Carson Palmer was done with the Bengals and Mike Brown his attitude was sit on your couch and eat pork grinds for all I care I'm not cutting you I'm not trading you unless I get what I want and no one was offering Mike Brown what do you want it two days before the trade deadline Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell breaks a collarbone all of a sudden Mike Brown got what he wanted so and I'm not going to name names pick a number one receiver with a contending team I won't name names for fear of being accused of putting the jinx on them if you get a number one receiver serene who suffers the season ending injury this week next week the next week or the next week all of a sudden Raiders are getting a second round pick all of a sudden Raiders don't have to pay any of the salary all of a sudden Raiders might even get more than a second round pick so that's part of this analysis circumstances can change dramatically beyond the teams that are talking to the Raiders and at last word Jets saints Steelers with the bills monitoring the situation you take away another teams number one receiver on a contending team that's how the Raiders get what they want and that's how kind of a clouds part because maybe Adams sees hey going to that contending team as the instant number one receiver is a better option for me than any of these teams that are currently looking at me well and you look at how much receivers get hurt we just saw it with Nico Collins now the Texans are loaded at receivers so they're they're set at receivers so I'm not saying Texans are going after Devontae Adams but it happens and even hamstrings as we saw at Devontae as we're seeing with Nico Collins can keep you out for weeks and if you're a contending team and you don't have a good core of receivers if you just have that number one guy say a Dallas with the CD lamb then you're going to go after Devontae if you have an injury and you think you can contend this year he is that guy Mike that can put you over the top potentially if that's what you're missing and that's where I look like at a team like the Bills who I think have the parts to win a Super Bowl but I don't like the receiving court all and and if you add Devontae Adams to that receiving court suddenly I like the receiving court and I like those other guys with Devontae Adams much much more so that's a team I think that he can really make a difference on and there are teams out there he can really make a difference on that have a chance to contend this year so that's what you're looking for is either a team with an injury that thinks it can tend that needs him or a team like the Bills that could really use him. The Bills have always resisted the in season all in moves they'll make some off season moves but in season when opportunities arise and I remember back in 2021 when the Rams made the trade for Vaughn Miller when the Rams made the move to get Odo back from junior I remember saying you know what if the Bills had acquired those two players maybe they would have won the Super Bowl that year because those two players became key ingredients in what the Rams ultimately did the Bills don't do that and you know Shireen I think the other challenge here for the Bills when you trade Stefan Diggs and then you tell the world repeatedly we don't need a number one receiver we don't need a number one receiver it's good that we don't have a number one receiver oh well we're going to trade for a number one receiver you got to be willing to come up with a way and this is where the PR people earn their money you got to come up with a way to thread that needle and say all that stuff that we said about not need a number one receiver pay no attention we have an opportunity to get a number one receiver we're gonna go get him and we did it and here we are and if it dusts off the Stefan Diggs conversation so be it it's about making your team better and also if he's going to go to the Jets and make the Jets better you get even more of a net positive you've kept the Jets from getting him and you've gotten him so that's all the more reason for the Bills to be doing more than monitoring the situation. Well I remember speaking of which back when the Cowboys decided that same we don't need a number one receiver we're gonna have a receiver by committee mid-season they go out and they trade from Mario Cooper and they gave up a first round draft pick to get him Mario Cooper and they were right they needed a number one receiver I think the Bills are in the same position regardless they need a number one receiver he could be that guy he could help them but you're right it's just not something that's in their DNA it's not something that they have done before and maybe that's why they haven't gotten to a super warm one a super ball Mike maybe this is the guy they need to do that to get them over the hump it's obviously the best team in that division that division has has not been what we thought it was going to be a lot because of the two at Tonga Viola injury and the Jets just haven't been that team yet they're gonna win that division but is that enough that you've done that you're trying to get further than that and I think Davonda Adams can get them further than that Jason Garrett tells a great story about the Omari Cooper trade Wilma Clay came to him and they're talking about possibilities of trading for a receiver and I don't think Jason was all that interested until Wilma Clay mentioned Omari Cooper and it's like you can get you can get Omari Cooper and oh by the way that was a Raiders receiver at the time that the Raiders decided to move on from and now they're moving on from Davante Adams it's more Davante Adams is moving on from the Raiders either way I'll be stunned to see him ever on a practice field or in uniform for the Raiders again I fully expect him to be traded the question is where when and how much will they get for him and how much of his salary where they have to pay let's do this let's take a break here when we return we do have a game tonight week six begins with a pretty important match up in the NFC West one of the best rivalries in football is renewed with the 49ers actually in an early season must win situation we'll talk 49ers Seahawks right after this get on my lawn tonight Seahawks bringing back their old look again the 49ers with their awesome white on white pro backs great game aesthetically pleasing game the night between the 49ers and the Seahawks on Amazon prime as week six gets started and terrain this really is a critical game I think it was Nick Bose in 49ers pass rusher who said this is must win and it always sounds a little bit trite and premature because you still got a lot of games to play but when you consider the 49ers are 0 and 2 in the division 0 and 3 in the conference yeah they need to win this one and they need to what they need to do build the lead hold the lead because in their two divisional games they've blown it against the Rams and the Cardinals they need to finish it out tonight so they can at least convince themselves they're capable Mike you know you can't win a championship in first six week this season but I think you can lose the championship in the first six weeks of the season and it isn't must we win because of the reasons that you said 0 and 2 in the division 0 and 3 in the conference and guess what look at that schedule chiefs how boys are next so if you lose this one you're potentially could lose the next two as well before you buy week and I think they're going to be really good when they get Christian McCaffrey back and get a little healthier but are they going to be out of it by beyond the by and if they lose the next three it's going to be tough Mike tough tough tough sledding to be sitting there at two and six I don't know I wouldn't like their chances at two and six can't imagine they lose tonight if they do though yes going into the by chiefs and cowboys could they actually be two and six and at some point you have to ask yourself do they say we're not bringing Christian McCaffrey back until we feel like we are in contention there's no point risking him at all this year if we feel like this is just like 2020 the year after the last time they went to the Super Bowl and lost to the Chiefs it was lost season due to injuries that happened early on similar vibes this year it's just not working they have a lot of issues they need to address and I think it it creates more frustration for the fan base because there was just an expectation that you plug it back in and you just keep going and everything's going to be fine and let's fast forward to the postseason let's see if we can finish the job to have the season get derailed the way it has and to have these losses you can hear the voices you can see that the people who cover the team how they're up in arms about this because this wasn't expected and it just feels like they can't get out of this churn that they're caught in and tonight's their opportunity to do it it really is it really is as must win as a week six game can be this is it yet shorter being 0 and 5 this is it yet for the 49ers because they shouldn't be 2 and 3 and they feel worse than 2 and 3 they had last year they started off with the five game winning streak then they had that streak there where they lost three in a row and the Vikings by the way was one of those losses as it is this year they had the three losses and we were saying some of the same things about the 49ers what's wrong with the 49ers are sitting there at 5 and 3 this feels far worse than that and I know this is a team that can turn it around and could still get it done and could still win the NSC I understand all that but you've got to do it at some point it can't just be this is a really good team on paper and look what they did last year and we expect the same thing this year at some point you have to do it and this just feels like the game that they have to do it to start to turn around and be the team that everyone expected them to be and Brock Purdy coming into the season he told Mike Silver the San Francisco Chronicle that the goal this year is to dominate to not have close games to be like Tom Brady to put teams away early in the third quarter and I remember in the preseason it's kind of like this guy's trying to do more than he can and there's been flashes of that so far in the regular season he can play well if he stays within the confines of the offense I don't think he's equipped to become a Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes he can be a very good Brock Purdy but that's part of this too as you have injuries as you have challenges does your supposed franchise quarterback help you rise above them or is he still just a piece of a machine and this year the machine isn't working the way that it needs to work and it's an important match up tonight because Mike McDonald now coaching the Seahawks the last time Brock Purdy saw a Mike McDonald defense that was Christmas night of 2023 it did not go well for the 49ers and Brock Purdy that night now you've got different players you've got different team you've got different everything but the common thread is Mike McDonald came up with a game plan that stymied the 49ers that night and they got some they got some fortunate bounces and they made the most out of them but still it was an ugly showing that same brain is coming up with the game plan tonight to try to keep Brock Purdy from beating the Seahawks well Jordan Mason has been really good Mike I mean he's averaged 107 yards per game he's like they don't miss Christian McCaffrey but then you look at the red zone and how bad they've been at the red zone last year they led the league 67.2% of the time they got in the red zone or touchdowns a lot of that is Christian McCaffrey this year they're sitting there at 29 they have a 40.9% touchdown rate last last week they were one and six one touchdown on six red zone opportunities that's been the difference this year and that is Christian McCaffrey that's nothing else on this team it's Christian McCaffrey not being out there that's been the difference in the red zone to me that's been the difference with this team this year they're still really good on offense but they're really good until they get inside the 20 and then they're struggling they're struggling to put it in the end zone and put teams away you know our assessment of quarterback play relative to other quarterbacks has changed in recent years because so many quarterbacks play well 90 used to be an impressive passer rating now if you're not in triple digits you're not even in the conversation but when you look at Brock Purdy's performance so far and you look at completion percentage lowest of his career so far touchdown percentage lowest of his career so far interception percentage tied with highest of his career so far he's got six touchdown passes and four interceptions in five games yards per attempt 8.8 that's impressive lowest of his career so far passer rating 953 lowest of his career so far so it's a reflection of the struggles that the 49ers are facing but at the same time if you have a true franchise quarterback he can lift you above those struggles and I know I know what you're thinking Patrick Mahomes numbers are bad too but they're 5 and 0 that's the difference the Chiefs haven't lost a game the 49ers have lost 3 out of 5 now Purdy has never lost to the Seahawks and Gino Smith has never beaten the Seahawks maybe this is a night that trends chains I don't know it's Gino Smith 34th birthday would be a great birthday present for him from himself if he could go out there and deliver the win but you know the 49ers still feel like the better team but they're definitely definitely is reason to be concerned based upon what's happened and this is a microscope game for the 49ers the last time we saw them in a standalone spot they were steam rolling the jets since then they're one in three and they've benefited from the anonymity of the cluster of afternoon games on a Sunday now prime time everybody's paying attention we're gonna find out what this 49ers team is really made of for 2024 tonight we are Mike and and I also think we find out a lot about the Seahawks you know I'm one of those I think Gino Smith I've underrated him and under appreciated really what he's done since he's been the Seahawks starting quarterback and he's leading the league and I even realized I started just looking at stats yesterday I'm like dang he leads the league in passing yards almost 1500 passing yards so he said now that part of that they they can't run the ball and they better be able to run the ball better tonight to have a chance to beat the 49ers but this guy's been good almost 300 passing yards a game Mike he's everything you want a quarterback I think you know he wanted the contract extension the Seahawks didn't do that but I think he's proved that he can be a legitimate starting quarterback in this league and get you to the playoffs and possibly win a playoff game so I you know I I will say it I haven't appreciated Gino Smith quite as much probably as I should he's the charter member of this new club of quarterbacks who busted with their first teams finally got another chance for him it was eight years and look at what he's done with it and I think one of the reasons why he's been collectively underrated you attach that stigma that scarlet letter the football version of the big A to Gino Smith to Sam Darnold to others who have been like that and you know all it's a fluke it's a fluke it's a fluke at a certain point it's not a fluke anymore with Gino Smith it's not a fluke now relative to his past performances against the 49ers it would be a fluke if he wins tonight but maybe it's the start of a new trend this game really does have because you look at it on paper and say man but it really does have a lot of storylines a lot of drama and a lot of significance especially if the Seahawks could win and and I know through their first three games I wasn't real that or I wasn't all that impressed with the the Seahawks wins because I didn't think much of the opponents they've fallen off they've lost two in a row lost to the Giants at home you have a different vibe about the Seahawks you're right we'll feel differently about them if they can pull this off we'll definitely feel differently about the 49ers if they can't no question about it my as Pete said it's that scarlet letter the NYJ scarlet letter Gino is one of those guys who wears that scarlet letter along with Zach Wilson along with Sam Darnold keep going down the list of all those guys who flamed out with the Jets and came on and did what or have have a chance to do well elsewhere Sam Darnold obviously is with the Viking so yeah it's a big game for both teams I'm excited about this one and you're right I wasn't initially and then you start digging into it about the consequences of this game and this and what happens in the division it's a big game for both teams it's not even an NBC game and we're hyping up you're welcome Bezos we're hyping up your game tonight because yeah some people may look at it and say I'll watch something else tonight don't watch it first of all it's football it's on TV it's NFL football on TV so it's always compelling even if it's Bengals Giants which is a compelling game on Sunday nights he now NBC will be happy and I'll get my check for this week I won't get a Bezos check but we're doing our Bezos heavy lifting here tonight's game is worth your time and by the way on the Jets is Christian Hackenberg gonna get a phone call at some point I mean we're looking at this chain of Jets quarterbacks that washed out Gino Darnold maybe Zach Wilson has a future bring back Hackenberg I like it I like it I have a feeling he'd be the exception but who knows who knows maybe the maybe the UFL will come calling for Christian Hackenberg he played in one of those lesser leagues too and it didn't go up maybe he's just the guy that that they got wrong and everybody would have gotten wrong but for the other guys if they would have gone elsewhere to start their career Shireen maybe it would have worked all right uh Shireen I thank you for getting up early Texas time we will do this again let's take a break when we return we'll hear from Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy right here on PFT Live what does
