BYOB: The Shining

Heeeeeerrrrrreeeeeee's BYOB! Hey everyone welcome back to the pod, and an absolute screamer for you this week during horror month as we take on 'The Shining'. It's a film we've been desperate to do for a while because there's just so much that we can delve into. Kubrick's greatest ever work? Did he go too far with his treatment of Shelley Duvall? What is in room 237? Why did Stephen King hate this adaptation?! Well, our main review is the Shining... but on top of that, and before we kick off properly this week we've also got reviews for you of Asohka (Disney+) as well as The Lesson.

Right then, The Shining, one of the greatest horror films of all time, but such a different type of horror film from last week. There's loads here around ominous tension starting with those incredible scenes at the beginning that show the level of disconnection from society.

We get stuck into whether Jack has the Shining, whether he is driven mad or whether the hotel has simply taken hold of him. We also discuss the importance of the character of Danny and whether Jack has in fact been reincarnated and finally what on earth did that picture mean at the end!!

There's some pretty important bits to get into on the fine wine or war crime conversation with both the treatment of Duvall and also the way in which the issue of race is handled by Kubrick. Then of course a big ding dong for the MVP with Nicholson and Duvall going head to head.

Bring Your Own Blockbuster isn’t just a film review podcast, we try our best each week to dive deep into the themes and discussions that make cinema so special - and we’d love to hear your feedback on the film. What did meet it mean to you? What did we miss? Get involved and tell us what you think on social media, you can find us everywhere at @byobpod
