Bring Your Own Blockbuster

BYOB: Spider-Man

Can Spider-Man come out to play? We've made it to episode 15 without really taking an a classic 'superhero' movie, and it's only right that we start with Ben and Jack's favourite Super-hero of all time. But when you break it down... why is Spider-Man so special? What is it about that character that makes it so iconic and why do all of us of a certain age gravitate towards it so much?

No getting away from it, this film was an absolute BLOCKBUSTER, and not too dissimilar from a couple of other films that we've looked at there was a huge amount of controversy over the selection of who would play the lead role. But in Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire we were given a character that felt accessible. For the first time the Superhero movie genre took the idea of a nerdy angst ridden teen and turned him into a web slinging hero.

Up for grabs on the discussion today were where Spider-Man ranks in the pantheon of Superhero movies, how the CGI holds up agains that of modern day Marvel films. We take a look at what the film shows us about respecting our elders and how the film manages to somehow take the fantasy of the genre and root it deep in the reality of life.

Our final two questions, how has the film aged and who were the stand out performers... well Tobey Maguire for starters is our Spider-man. He's the OG. The face that we'll always think of when you hear that character spoken about. BUT... outside of him - who dominates every scene that they're in? Who manages to walk away with the title of MVP - huge shouts for JK Simmons, Kirsten Dunst and of course Willem Dafoe.
