A couple of weeks ago, I said NDP leader Carla Beck's promise to suspend the gas tax and some other breaks, and brought to mind what happened when Grant Devine killed the gas tax. I said, without a plan, it might have similarly unpleasant results for highways and provincial coffers. Well, since then, the NDP has costed out its promises, a document compiled under the watchful eye of Ron Styles. He may recall he was a Deputy Minister of Finance under the NDP. Effectively, he was the budget guy. On budget day, Stiles was who we reporters would ask technical questions of. Then, under the wall government, Stiles moved into the crowns, including heading up Sask Tel. So my point is, if Ron Styles says the numbers add up, I'd take him seriously. And he says the NDP plan would have a balanced budget within four years. But the SAS party hasn't costed its promises yet, but the budget called for the books to be balanced next year. To be fair, those governments may be better at forecasting balanced budgets than achieving them, but that is their plan. Listen, promises are easy to make.
