[Intro Music] Hello everybody and welcome to the Daily New Castle Podcast and you may be looking at this episode and going "That's a bit short, but that's because this wasn't planned at all!" But, it's Thursday evening, getting dangerous close to Friday morning actually, and England have just lost 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to Greece! And how long has it been since we saw in England performance that bad? Well, actually, it's probably only been about 4 months! Slovenia, Mandibra, I've got anyone remember that? But thinking about it, there was actually a new castle goalkeeper in that day, maybe it's just a magpie effect, nevertheless it felt like everything went wrong for England today, and I'm just going to go through and do a little bit of review, solo, just to give sort of my insight onto the game, where it went wrong, and what maybe we need to change before Finland, and a little bit on the future of Lee Karsli, because we all know if Karsli doesn't get the job, then one Eddie Howe is probably right at the top of that FA list of managers to replace him, they can stay clear, Eddie isn't going anywhere, but start off, it did just feel like everything went wrong today, from the starting line up to the attitude of the players, attitude of the players is probably something we've been talking about a little bit too much over the last few weeks on a new castle side, and we saw it once again for England. Here, but we begin the game with no striker, at home, turgris, with two on the bench, Ollie Watkins and Dominic Salangi, now I know we spoke yesterday, for those that caught the pod, oh, on yesterday's pod should I say, and we said maybe you know Salangi wasn't the best choice, but who could replace him, Watkins on the other hand has been in fantastic form for Aston Villa, so you're sitting there thinking this is this game where Ollie Watkins starts and asserts himself in the England team, but no, we start with no striker and you're thinking maybe Anthony Gordon fits in there, I mean we did ask yesterday, as I mentioned on the other pod, how you fit Palmer, Ford and Saka, Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon all in at the same starting line up, well he managed it, what a horror show, it's good that we're getting close to Halloween, but there wasn't a single player that really looked like scoring today, and I'd like to get some opinions from the listeners as well, was it a case of England were just a bit overconfident, a little bit cocky, did the team believe the game was already won, did we underestimate Greece, I mean I'm going to give my opinion obviously, but it'd be very interesting to hear everyone else's as well, so from the looks of things, England set up, Phil Foden, supposed to be that most advanced central player, but I think the only player who was in the game less than Foden was Anthony Gordon unfortunately, and you can probably tell that by the result, Gordon was one of the first players hooked, but not really going to talk too much about Gordon, had a quiet game, I don't think he was utilised enough when the Crossfield ball was on, he did make the runs at times, he just wasn't found, but Phil Foden, I'm not quite sure how he's been allowed to start the game, so before October, Foden had played more than 45 minutes, just once, since the Euro's final, since the start of October, he's played 70 minutes, 3 times in 9 days, and a player that's got so many injury problems and has all the potential in the world, why is he playing in these games where realistically it's just more of a risk to the player, fitness coaches and physios at Manchester City must be tearing the hair out, around the world there must be tearing the hair out because you're looking at it and going, why is he starting in these games, he doesn't need to play, we've got enough talent everywhere on the pitch, but we'll leave it at it, it was just a strange decision, and let's be honest if Foden scores a hat trick, we're all saying it's a master stroke, but if you're a man City fan, which obviously I'm not, you are looking at that and going, we really didn't need him playing today, and to be honest, Foden wasn't the worst player on the park, it was just the decision at the start of the game that I picked out is one that I thought might not go too well, purely because I thought you might pick up a knock, that turned out to be Bakai or Sakka, but as I mentioned, Phil Foden wasn't the worst player on the park, and despite Greece having 3 disallowed goals, an effect cleared off the line and actually scoring twice during the game, I don't think our back line was that bad, I think they just simply didn't get the help needed from the midfield, I do have to admit the defending for their goals was laughable, reminds me of Sunderland, I kid, I kid, actually no I don't kid, this is a Newcastle podcast, that can make those jokes, but genuinely it reminded me of us under Bruce at times, I'll tell you what, even McLaren, where just players weren't willing to get a foot in, we kind of saw it for Newcastle against Evan at times where it just didn't look like players wouldn't have put a foot in, and then we're sort of seeing the same things with England, and I'm starting to think that maybe I'm just seeing the negatives, and I'm seeing the same negatives in every single game, and I'm starting to think, oh is the game going soft, or something like that, but maybe that's just me, I'd like to hear how other people think as well, but yeah, talking about England and in relation to Newcastle vs Evan, one player who had a great game at the weekend, and a howler today, was Jordan Pickford, and I think we're, I messaged in the group chat about the, with the pods 10 minutes into the game saying, what does Pope or Henderson have to do, to get a game at this level, because there's so many mistakes in that player, and I'm not saying that Nick Pope is the answer, Kev has said on another podcast, and I agree that Pope probably won't be in the squad at the next euros, or the next World Cup, so what is he really doing in there, but Dean Henderson, is he a fantastic goalkeeper, no, are England blessed with many good goalkeepers, no, it could be that, you know, next England set ups waiting for James Trafford, who actually hit the stride and you know, push forward and stake a claim, but I think most of us will be 10 years older by the time that happens, so we really need someone along just basically to rotate with Jordan Pickford for games like today, where Pickford has had a howler, you could see early doors that it wasn't going very well, bring someone on, half time, you can even say it's down to an injury or something like that, protect the player, and then you're giving your second choice goalkeeper a bit of game time, and then if Pickford gets injured in a major tournament, you're sitting there and going actually, we've now got a bit of experience on the bench, rather than Pope and Henderson, who I don't know their exact caps, but it's probably less than 20 between them I would imagine, and they have to be wondering what they have to do to start a game in international level. Now, I would like to know if Pickford wasn't going to play on Sunday, as Newcastle fans, would you start Nick Pope, or for those that aren't Newcastle fans and listen, we were very thankful to you, because this is a Newcastle podcast, but would you still start Pope over Henderson, or would you maybe give Dean Henderson a little bit more of a chance, because there was rumours that obviously Newcastle were going to replace Nick Pope in the summer, that never came to fruition, but we have seen in the fair opening games of the season just why Nick Pope is so revered by many Newcastle fans, and for Finland that I do think there'll be five or six changes, I think we'll see more of a rigid formation, I think it was clear today that the fluid style just doesn't work for England, and it's going to take a lot to change that. I think if I had to grab a positive, it's from the perspective that both Cosley and the new captain, John Stones, both admitted in post-match that it wasn't good enough, we deserved to lose, and that Greece deserved to be top in the group right now, and it was almost a breath of fresh air to be honest, because the amount of times we've seen England managers go, well we were the better team, but we couldn't break them down, struggled against the low block, other teams just tried harder than us, that was the basics, but Greece were fantastic tonight, the counter-attack and style was absolutely fantastic, Pavlidis, who did really well in the iridesse last season, hasn't quite hit the mark in League of Portugal, I'd try and pronounce it the proper way, but I'd get butchered, but it hasn't really hit the ground running, I'd like to think the two goals today will change that, Neil you know, look a lot better, otherwise scoring a brace against England might be the highlight of his year, but either way England weren't good enough, and I guess talking about not good enough, you can talk about the England goal and another relation to a Newcastle player, Odyssey's, he really should do better, did celebrate obviously with it being an England goal, but I really hope he doesn't have risks like we're paper towels when he starts for us, because otherwise we're going to be getting, we'll end up getting knocked out of a cup game because of it or something like that, and it's, it's a stark reminder that he's the most expensive goalkeeper we've ever bought, and I believe he's in our top 10, 15 most expensive signings of all time, and it's, I haven't, we know, I know obviously I know it was for financial fair player reasons, but it doesn't look good, and I guess to continue on the topic of Newcastle, that brings me to my final point of this quick end of game review, and that is Lee Cosley's future in management, and I for one I'm very interested to see how the better nods look for the next England manager tomorrow morning, because before the game I thought Lee Cosley looked guaranteed to get the role, and I've said on the last few pods I'm not impressed, I haven't been impressed by him whatsoever, that, I think it's safe to say that hasn't changed, but doubt might now be creeping into the FA's minds and they might start, be starting to think we'll hang on, we can't go into a tournament if I'm going to play like that, and whoever we bring in has only got a real short amount of time to change things and get them playing to their system before the tournament, so it might force them to go look down a different direction, now I suppose we have to remember that Garrosh Southgate had some absolute shock as in his time at England, I mean it's kind of the reason we were playing Greece and not France, I'll imagine if we played France like that, I'd be talking about a 6-0 demolition job, but nevertheless, with many Newcastle fans being perhaps a little too negative towards Eddie Howe at the moment, obviously we're fans, it's all prerogative to our opinions, whether we like other people like them or not, that's kind of the part of being a supporter, I just don't attack people for having opinions, I know I don't, so it's just one of those, but it has to be questioned whether or not Howe looks at that England job, perhaps a little more fondly than what he would have done in the summer, because in the summer he was sitting there thinking 'oh well I still could get Mark Wayne, I've got a little bit of a budget behind me', and then come October, England don't all look all that secure in the nation's league, Newcastle have had an all right start, points wise it looks good, performance wise not so much, so Eddie Howe might be looking at that and going I could jump ship here, I could get the England job, I could get them promoted from the nation's league, and then going into a major tournament where the favourites, who knows what could happen, I'm not going to say much on what I think Eddie Howe could do as an England manager because I personally don't think he takes it, more down to ease personality than anything else because even if he lost his job at Newcastle, I imagine Howe would want to go straight back into club management, but perhaps I'm wrong, I'd be interested in knowing what everyone else thinks, but perhaps he looks at it as the next big step in his career, no bournemouth, did everything there and he's absolutely fantastic, did everything he could, Newcastle he's got us from relegation fodder to the Champions League, albeit he's had a lot of help from financials, should we say, but what man I just haven't in their career, he got lucky at the right time and he's made the most out of it and then he potentially could look at England and go well I might not get this job again in a couple of years, so I'm going to have to, I'm going to have to go for it, but if not Howe, Thomas too sure is the current favourite, but I've got a real bad feeling, that it's going to be Graham Potter and whoever it is at this moment, we should probably be grateful that they'll have over a year to determine the best course of action and we'll all be a lot more grateful if they leave any Howe in Newcastle alone, now I've been Michael Graham's Law and this has just been a quick review of England's first competitive defeat at Wembley in four years, as I said it wasn't going to be a long one, 15 minutes is actually even longer than what I wanted to take, but there's a lot to talk about, particularly with such a poor performance and a lot that could potentially impact Newcastle in the coming months, will Tino Liverpool get a start against Finland, will Eddie Howe be the next favourite for the England job for what feels like the 15th time in a couple of months, well whatever it is I actually can't wait to see us draw Mill Mill with Everton once again after that, so it's brought more positivity to me, more positivity to Newcastle United and can we just please get rid of international breaks during the season because there are a waste of time, but on that note, I'll see you next time.
