baldinger will be on the show at three o'clock we'll be joined on site by ollie the goalie colzig stops by at five 30 today hello daniel what to say body we are at cap one arena it's almost like we never left just it feels like we were just here doing stuff as it relates to uh the winter sports but they're getting underway this week it feels that i'm not ready for it like i'm still only five weeks into the nipple season and now we're entering week six but it's like yeah obviously i get it i mean i understand how the calendar works but it feels like this is all coming on very quickly head on a swivel my friend i am extremely ready for it this is your boy's happy place being back here at capital one arena the only thing that would make me happier is if there was ice laid out there was a sheet of ice to look at or sheet out in the the uh the middle of the the bowl there in the arena uh and people were filing in and cap sweaters already that'll happen around five when the door is open instead of the ice you're seeing flooring because there's a concert third i blind is performing tonight a little bit after eight o'clock i believe but it's an all-night event it's going to be a lot of fun i've heard that there are 70 caps alumni that are going to be on hand today we'll have ollie colzig among others on the show which is going to be very cool and every single member of the current capital's roster will be here i got to say really quickly the capitals do stuff like this the best better than any other team in town and i'm sure the commanders with the new regime are going to try to close that we're working on it yeah uh the wizards the nationals do things at a high level in their own regards this is not to ding anybody else but the capitol chasing the cap it's just first class with everything that they do it feels familial there's something about hockey in that regard to where a lot of the fans that are here now we're here in the 70s it's just an awesome experience i think that they're putting together for fans tonight it's going to be a really sweet deal they've got uh DJ's plan throughout the day the Stanley Cup's going to be here the alumni mingling with the current players with the fans it's going to be a party and it all leads up to the start of a brand new season on saturday night with their red carpet event 50 years they've been around it's hard to believe uh and i remember just like the other tens of people going to you know us erina or cap you know capital center wherever you should call it back in the day and land over maryland making the trek around the beltway just slogging through afternoon traffic you know with 7 000 my best friends to watch them take on the hardford whalers you know it's crazy that they've been around for 50 years uh the majority of you know i i don't totally make up 50 years but i'm close and as they age so do i the different iterations the different memories i have of of you know some of these capitol's teams some of which are really good they have to kind of long been forgotten you go to a dark place for a little while as kind of this i don't say rebrand but this rock the red era uh that's been led of course by ovechkin and some of the mainstays and some of those guys even now have graduated right it's now ovi and uh john carlson obviously one of the senior statesman but some of the dudes that were part of the furniture here the nick backstrums of the world uh you know are kind of no longer mainstays at this point so it's it's always fun to have milestone numbers like there's something different about 49 than than 50 right it's only one but it's not it's you can always kind of look back and think back on some of the good memories the bad the tough and everything in between but they've been there tell me i'm wrong with what i'm about to say go on tell me i'm wrong danny rue or listener with your hands on your steering wheel october's the best sports month the last few nights have been amazing i've gone to bed so late and i've had so many different things on multiple screens last night the wife is she was going upstairs to bed she says you're overstimulating yourself like i'm some five-year-old who's like eating a bunch of foods and just looking at too many screens but i had multiple tv's going previous channel button i got the laptop up the nhl is back the wizards were playing a preseason game the caps preseason is over you've got the major league baseball playoffs which have been incredible oh by the way uh the dodgers force in a game five against the pajres yesterday yanki's gonna try to finish off the royals based on some of the proceedings i don't know who we're rooting for mex or fillies probably nobody yeah that's that's rooting against everybody mex advanced past philadelphia and then oh by the way in the nfl we got thursday night football tonight a great game between the 49ers and the seahawks the commanders are good for the first time since 1914 like what is not to like right now about the sports landscape yeah it's all i took my french bulldog for a walk in 52 degree weather yeah i had to put on a little sweatpants jacket tandem to go take a walk last night pop that sweatshirt on in the walk to school sorry about it sorry about it just not stand the key whatever one should want i'm gonna if you're an in-shape instagram person you're an influencer you tell me about the latest 10% off code for your fitness product and your ginseng is better than everyone else's whatever this isn't for you but the rest of us people here's your bar if i'm let's say i'm standing just standing outside bend standing am i sweating just by existing if the answer's no welcome welcome to the fall yeah welcome to the time for us regular people right if you live in bikini and you're endlessly taking vacations and that's really not even your vacation where it's just where you are all the time i don't know how you're doing that but that's fine for the rest of us working slubs with mortgages and concerns now right now is the time suck soaking in looking at the 30 13 quarterback rankings that drop today where they based on just the performance this season rank every single quarterback they say reminder these ranks were built around the following scoring system skill set how good a quarterback is production score EPA per play and success rate so it is a combination of how good they think you are and also how you're playing the number one quarterback in the NFL right now is jadon daniels according to the 30 13 their top five is daniels fellow l.l.s. you tiger Heisman trophy winner joe burrow lemar jackson josh allen and patrick mohomes so he's on a list with the other four guys that are typically in the top five on everybody's list mohomes jackson allen burrow and whatever order you normally throw them into what's interesting though is that they have jadon daniels first that is the interesting part is you're not scrolling down you have to scroll up once again that's a not a scroll down that's a scroll up to find the washington quarterback how quickly things can change i don't necessarily think when i watch all these games with my eyes that daniels is definitively the number one quarterback in the NFL through five games i think he's in the conversation but then you start to look at everybody else they all have the same misses they all have the same that play could have been better moments joe burrow's team has lost all but one of its games now you don't hold that all against joe burrow but it's not like he's been perfect he was great against washington he threw for 400 yards and five touchdowns against Baltimore he might be for me the number one quarterback in the league so far but it's not like the first couple of weeks didn't show some rust from him lemar jackson has had some bugaboo moments to turn over some flaws josh allen just came off of 13 for 30 i'm gonna put him right now over jaden daniels and again like we talk about with are they a super bowl contender where are they on the power rankings this does not mean jaden daniels is the best quarterback in football on some off-season ranking going in the next year right but you're just talking about what we've seen which is to this point 20 quarters of football and just like you could say washington is everybody as good as any team in the nfc just like you could say the commanders if they beat the ravens or a super bowl contender you could also say jaden daniels is in the conversation as the best quarterback in football yeah it's you could pick some nets right and this is what i was talking about with rankings when washer when we used to go well they're not 28th they're probably more than 24th it doesn't matter you're irrelevant you're in the bottom bucket you're you are and also ran this just means i would probably say the guy that jackson who's ninth in passing yards and eighth in rushing yards in the nfl not on quarterbacks in the whole week is that right that's pretty incredible that's funny joe bro has been beyond prolific last week josh allen got off to an unbelievable start regression a little bit these past couple weeks let me be clear if i'm making my rankings i would have those three go up above daniels because i didn't like the tampa bay game and i thought the first half the giants game so basically it's three and a half really good games and even this past week where he had the unbelievable plays that are otherworldly that no one else can make there was more inaccuracies and bad in sure but still we're talking about one of the best quarterback performances of the season so far yeah to me at worst and and this demise entire point of the conversation it's not to run run down jane daniels i'm doing the opposite at worst you would go okay fine i'll slot him in sixth yeah at worst given given these rankings right and and that's the point you were in the conversation to be one two three four five shuffle up and deal because there's 27 teams that are going god i wish i had that and he's number one on a lot of the epa metric stuff which is very favorable to the dual threat qb because of the rushing stuff number one which accounts so it should be but it also i think is more of a team statistic than say like a a pro football focus grade which is very drilled down on did you do your job on that play but look if he keeps playing at the level he is they're going to keep winning football games he's going to keep getting the accolades and they're going to continue to be in the conversation with any lists that are coming out i want to talk to brian baldinger about jane daniels and the commanders when he joins us at three o'clock today here on gnd there's a bunch of historical opportunities for daniels in washington this weekend against the ravens which we'll get to in just a minute but did you watch any of the hurricane coverage last night are you a guy that watches weather coverage no it's not for me i i don't there's there's a million that parts about it that i don't enjoy there's also a lot of part about it i don't quite understand like when they're like evacuate then there's like live on the scene for where you should be evacuated here's a person yeah i don't i don't want i've never loved uh how how excited news organizations get about it feels like they're getting about hurricane coverage or or weather coverage snow stuff and everything else there is something about weather coverage that appeals to me and i'm not alone obviously no totally ratings and everyone's watching it last night and i wonder what that is why is that the scenes are awful think about it i mean people's houses and and uh even if they did well you know one of our colleagues had a family member that was in that area and you know parts of their houses damaged and their fences ruined and whatever else is going on like even though that went well for them that is a gigantic pain in the ass where now you're on the phone for hours and you're getting things fixed that's kind of the best case scenario of last night the worst case scenario is people lost homes people are going to lose lives it's terrible but there is something to me about the coverage of these events that i find so fascinating it's all a lot of it i'm like looking at and laughing at what they're doing like this guy is trying to walk against the wind last night and he's like i'm being hit with debris and he's like yeah right and you and i'm like dude you're dumb like what are you i just kind of can't that's that's the thing but why do we love it why does society love it uh there's a you agree that they do oh of course i i'm the weird one i fully acknowledge that right i'm i'm the one that's different i think people because i'm fascinated by weather in general right like uh storms where there's snow hurricanes tornadoes uh the movie twister like you make another one i'll be there the first night with popcorn and cola tell me where to go i think it's all feeding out of the same trough i don't think it's a news thing i think it's a weather thing there's a part of that like our our guy kevin shian is obsessed he's like snow totals this year i was talking to a couple guys that that have helped write the former salmanak over the years they're expecting seven to twelve over the course of the winter months like he loves it i'm going to uh does the football team ever game this weekend kev like he loves it don't have god bless you like whatever you're passionate about i just don't and i don't have the interest in it never have but but be just as to your question as to why i this is a little bit more bits of apologies i think that there's a huge section of television viewers that don't mind seeing bad stuff happen to people on a small scale it's like women arguing and throwing wine in each other's faces and calling it the real housewives of somewhere uh but the next level is like these sort of reality shows where awkward drama ensues and this is like real life stuff like that where people kind of i'm not saying you but i think people are kind of enthralled by disaster like i'm not i i don't i don't like the idea of people you know losing their homes i would imagine that there are people and it's a very small group of people but you might be right that are watching it like they watch nascar for a crash and they're going oh come on let's see the water rise but they don't know they are but i don't think that's the most people like i'm watching last night because i'm going this is a historical thing that we're covering in real time that we have the technology to cover in a pretty significant way and we are on the ground so to speak in these locations i don't know i just i find it interesting and compelling why i'm attracted to things or why i'm appealed to you know why something is appealing to me i get that in this case it is not just me when the amount of people texting me last night as i said i had all these games on i got all the stuff going on plus i got the weather i'm like it was just a i was basically a director in a truck last night going camera three camera seven camera nine camera four your boy had a field day last night it was the the coverage was incredible did you see what happened at the truck yes roof blows off roof came off what if the rays were playing playoff baseball which they almost always are by the way yeah usually they're good for 92 wins with 11 guys you've never heard of they would have been potentially home last night they would have not had that game obviously right but they might have a game coming up today or tomorrow they're playing that on a neutral site the bugs are supposed to play at ramen james stadium in tampa florida next week i believe another fortuitous kind of grace of god thing you don't have a home game on the schedule this weekend yep but even still by next weekend what are things going to look like so i'm thinking about everybody praying for everybody down there indeed but uh from a sports standpoint seeing the drop with the roof off was kind of a show last night that was you're going because i you see the tweeter see that somebody's the camera angle on it and we're like the roof is up go no it's not there's still oh my god there it is that those are holes it's not just light shining on one part of the roof it's actual holes in the roof that have that have been ripped right off by the winds i got to tell you that i think the drop is so slept on too i like the drop a lot this may be one of your five or six hottest sports decks i like the drop now they need to redo the surface because it's disgusting looking in-house and aesthetically on television they need to lay some new carpet down or something but as an indoor baseball guy indoor baseball paulson which you know my experiences there have always been fantastic and people are going to think i'm jonie but truly when i go there you have room to spread out you could sit wherever you want you have your own concession stand you have your own bathroom like every time i've and everyone's like oh you're just making fun i'm not i have always loved it if i'm going to the drop in the summer because i'm in tampa or whatever i know i'm going to have an awesome time it's air conditioned the food is good and no one else is eating it it's all for me yeah you'll see 16 strikeouts you know just a bunch of dudes just just begging for that to run home run i got a soft spot in my heart for the drop it's a dump they should not have a team now they're good the organization itself it's not their fault they're just run by a bunch of MIT guys that are crunching numbers and and you know wheeling and dealing every move they make is the right one they can't afford to have a single bad signing whereas the inky's just sort of like it just gets chewed up in some sort of you know line item same with like the red socks, doctors etc they compete on one cent for every thousand dollars that the inky span right so it's not their fault uh those guys do a really good job but the team should not be there it's not supported no one cares about them uh that's the worst stadium maybe going in terms especially in baseball and it's it's kind of an embarrassment that the whole thing is you know sort of still happening now again it doesn't change that i'm thinking about folks that are that are suffering and having to deal with things down there just talking big picture for major league baseball to me they got a team before us because George Steinbrenner like vacation down there and does like insisted that that that's the spot that you'd have a team well it's just a whole thing's a joke to me i'm a big eric nander guy they're general manager they're really smart that's a that's a good organization i root for them real quick on the commanders and jadon daniels i told you some history in the bounds this weekend the rookie quarterback you already know has thrown for a thousand is rushed for 250 in his first five games nobody'd ever done that before if the commanders beat the ravens daniels will be the second red rookie at quarterback since 1950 to start and win five of his teams first six games joining 2006 deck Prescott with the cowboys he can also become the third rookie quarterback in the last eight years to lead his team to a five-game winning streak at any point mac jones seven straight wins with the patriots in 2021 brock perdy with san francisco and 22 going into the playoffs won five in a row as well the commanders have scored at least 30 points in each of their last three games with 30 points on sunday danny they will become the second team since 1950 to score 30 or more points in four consecutive games started by a rookie quarterback they're doing things that nobody's ever been able to do really in the modern era now i i've got you gotta be aware of this actually i mean you got you always have some really good stats and nugget information but i looked this up just to confirm that it was true you know jadon daniels is the odd's on favorite for rookie the year oh wow do you believe that right now yeah right now no chance he is so and and i'm i'm just probably anybody else what is it five times he's won a rookie of the week or four times believe four out of five four out of five yeah so you know at an 80 clip his odds have gotten a little bit better like he's the and i'm looking at looking at the sub i think he's the what we call the betting favor that's an industry term it just means that he's now thought of as the most likely person to win rookie the year it's funny you bring that up because i actually want to get into his mvp conversation that everyone keeps having which i think is a little bit premature feels that way to me but i want to ask that question on the phones and i want to talk to you about it next let's open up the mgm national harbor listener lines at eight hundred six three six one oh six seven the daniels mvp talk that you're starting to hear nationally more than locally feels premature maybe hyperbolic do you agree or do you think it is reasonable is it warranted that's next on great and danny here on the fan this episode is brought to you by progressive insurance whether you love true crime or comedy celebrity interviews or news you call the shots on what's in your podcast queue and guess what now you can call them on your auto insurance too with the name of your price tool take on fall in a trail tackling to coma or go for the powerful tundra head to toyota dot com for more info or visit your local toyota dealership today toyota let's go places if your day sounds like we need the report asap you deserve medulla if you've persevered through you deserve this rich gold and lager with a crisp or refreshing taste or if you overcame you deserve this ice cold reward ladella the market will fight quick responsibly you're imported by cradley portchicago lennor i would say if i had to pick one that both of these two are elite competitors like at the highest level and that shows on the tape you know the way they extend plays the way they finish the way they lead their group so that's the part um if i was to make a comparison it would be something intangible like that both of them have their own unique ways about them but um in this game there's all these guys are fantastic competitors and then like in most profession there's the elite and these two guys are elite at it that was dan quinn yesterday out in ashburn commanders getting ready for the ravens in the most anticipated game of the weekend in the national football league welcome back to gnd on the fan where capital one arena headed the caps 50 event tonight we're excited to be here are the events going all evening long you can get in for 19 dollars and 74 cents to commemorate 50 years of caps oculus of 70 alumni and all of the current players here for the various activations and concerts throughout the evening including third-eyed blind gonna be rocking behind us here danny that's awesome they were uh i think i can remember which zims event it was so they've all run together so i apologize but what the one of the first two that i hosted third-eyed blind was the headliner and it poured rain because it was supposed to be out on the field so we had to kind of move under the concourse so it echoed and the sound wasn't as good but it was still amazing to see a band who's like i know their entire catalog you know like by adolescence and high school whatever they were great even as it was pouring rain around us there's a lot of people talking mostly nationally about jaden daniels as an mvp candidate right now and in fact if you look at the betting odds on nfl mvp as we approach week six he has crept into the conversation now of top five in that category at the moment depending on where you're looking i'm a fandell guy he got patrick mohomes at plus two thirty josh allen at nine to one lemard jackson's about six and a half to one cj shroud at six to one and then of every other player in the league behind those likely mvp's when this thing's all set and done mohomes allen jackson's shroud jaden daniels is next on the list at eleven to one ahead of guys like sam darnold joe burrow brock perdy his odds are twice as good as jared goffs or dak presscots so i want to have this conversation i mean is this a little bit aggressive for what we've seen so far is this a reasonable thing or is it a little bit too early to even be talking about this does it seem silly this is actually really hard because for a betting perspective a betting market is made to try to get you to bet your money and i'm not calling that sinister that's just obvious right we're capitalizing on this momentum the nfl analyst part of it to me is probably premature does that make sense like in other words he's been the star he's been who everybody's talking about it's now networks are fighting over having washington on their prime time telecast or you know cbs is using one of their two uh... rejections black balls to basically be able to keep them at one o'clock instead of having it go towards sunday football so from an analyst perspective there are too many guys that are going to frankly have more mvp like resumes the dannels this is not to run dannels down at all but you know for example joe burrow already has 12 touchdown passes to dannels is four uh lamar jackson's got 11 total touchdowns i think to dannels is eight and he's eight eighth in passing or ninth in passing arts eighth and rushing arts when you combine the two josh allen has had three efforts five games be unbelievable cj shroud's going to be uh the quarterback of a 13 win team in all likelihood wheeling and dealing in his own right there are too many names to to climb over that are hallmarks staples stars of teams that are bonafide and rhythm really good so from an analyst perspective let's just say that guy's having an amazing five games a great rookie here so far rookie the year prim but a favorite you do that mvp thing to try to you know ramp up the conversation to stand out in a certain way from a betting perspective i get it right everyone's talking about him you take people's money but to me so that part's not premature the analyst part of it to me is probably a little bit premature does that distinction make sense sure yeah i mean the betting market is its own entity and it's kind of less significant to the conversation but when you hear people on national television who are influential say their mvp right now is jadon daniels you gotta kind of pick a side i guess which is to say that makes sense or that's silly and i've kind of gone back and forth on this i'm going to side with it is way too soon for that discussion now someone could say the same thing about the idea that the commanders are going to win the division or the commanders are going to you know be super bowl contenders and to that i would argue well they're four and one there's a percentage chance of making the playoffs when you get to four and one or winning a division when you get to four and one just because it's a math equation there's only 17 of these you've now erased five we're almost a third of the way through whereas in daniels this case i don't think the mvp thing plays out the same way every single week the board can change considerably you could be on the way to winning the mvp in week 15 have two bad games and lose it because someone else right balls out so i just don't necessarily think it's the same as talking about the team and where they're headed i think that the bangles game that he played was as good a quarterback game as anybody's gonna have all season and the fact that that was in prime time is a major driver in all of yeah it's gonna go a long way i'm with you i think the cardinals game was solid there was nothing wrong with the cardinals game it was fine to i mean the statistically it was really good uh he had a 26 completions and 30 attempts that was a less spectacular jade and daniel's game there weren't that many plays in that game that were like jaw dropping only he makes it was a pretty well-designed offensive plan i thought the browns game the good in that game daniel mvp moments yeah the highlight plays were woes the escaping the sack for a 66 yard throw that's an mvp kind of moment i'm trying to think if there were others the 34 yard run over four three when he's dead to right that's probably an mvp moment but by and large otherwise i think it was a very normal quarterbacking game even the 41 yard touchdown of the army which was a great throw most quarterbacks in a clean pocket with an open receiver in the end zone drop that into the bucket and throw that touchdown so i have a hard time with the mvp thing right now as good as he has been i think that that is just a bit too soon and a little too much falling in love with the story by people who just want to crown him and again this is not the end all be oh but i'm trying to offer a way of example it sounds like we're knocking jade and dannos and and i hope it's pretty clear that we're not doing that the fact that we're even having this conversation is delightful he's on pace for 14 touchdown passes now that's not going to hold because there's been a lot of you know tackled at the ones or you know terra mccorn drop one this past week that goes in there there's going to be a couple of games where he throws for bunches but he's got four through five games whereas again Joe burrows got three times that amount now i know since that he's not winning games uh particularly but certainly not burrows for his political decision you got to add in his rushing touchdowns too i have so he's got eight total in that regard which again is it doesn't rank anywhere near the top five six tended to agree with you yeah so again it's not to knock him this has been wonderful it continues to be wonderful i can't wait to see him play again on sunday it's must watch but mvp conversation it's just it it's because people fall in love with this new thing whereas washington everyone thought was in one category myself included by the way which is the category of badness of can't get out of their own way under talented they're not going anywhere this year this is maybe you know clear the deck for for a couple seasons from now to this previously more amount organization that that is nothing but investigations and a travesty not only are they out of that bucket but they're in the bucket of an actual good football team a la houston you see j stroud last year people just want to quantify that somehow and instead of like going through every bit of nuance where well you see the Harris group they redid the one practice field at the state at the at the facility or you know they're actually doing a nice job to have people come down on the field in this sort of pre-game thing that you can pay extra for with your ticket it's not going through every bit of nuance it's we got to find some way to to celebrate how crazy this is so jane yandles is the mvp and i think that's a little bit over the top and the thing i will say that will bode well for him is and we've seen this with lamar jackson winning a couple of them deservedly but you know when you're a dual threat who runs around and makes plays a it's sexy and it's fun and people like watching it but voters like watching it too yes and there's this feeling of and sometimes it's reality like you are worth more to the offense because you don't just throw you also run and in the case of lamar and in jane daniel's case i think the running backs getting yards benefit from you just like the receivers obviously you're throwing on the ball benefit from you the whole offense kind of revolves around you you're the son of the solar system so i think that's part of why they get pushed a little further into the top of the mvp board then just your traditional passer who's having a really good season because they're not as responsible maybe for the run game in the eyes of some people but i think that's part of why he's now in the top five but want to see where you guys are at on this i am i'm just not there yet and i don't mean it's too early to talk about it which is probably the case but like that's not my answer when someone says are they a contender because they win the division i'm not saying it's too early to talk about it i think there's a little bit of a difference i don't think it's hypocritical between team and player individually week to week but on top of that i would just say i don't if i'm putting together a ballot right now he would not be in the top five for me he'd probably be really close but i think that the people that are talking about this are the national folks that are seeing the highlights and there aren't that many lowlights for the record but yeah i would say his highlight reels the best in football at this moment which was the entire Cincinnati game the crazy play he made couple of them this past week like his good is is the best his good is really really good let's go to danny who's an ashburn on g and d on the fan what's up danny what's going on guys how you doing good buddy listen hey listen first i just want to get a second to this kind of scratch of service with you guys right here and this is this question is mainly for for grant um you say you don't want to get behind uh you know getting behind uh you know jade and being a MVP man i mean when let's let's talk about the past 10 15 20 years when had you seen but he has done don't forget when he came in the league he said he marked down what what Stroud did for his for his first year and he said he wanted to make sure that he's going to beat every record that he has this kid comes in four o'clock every morning this kid comes in he's a leader he's confident he has no fear he's smart he throws the ball probably as as good as i've seen anybody in the past 15 20 years yeah but how can you not get behind somebody that is playing like he's playing and absolutely like like i mean listen he's listen grant listen danny i love you guys at that but get behind this kid we'll appreciate the call but nobody's not doing that is getting behind him i i don't know what that means we're asking should he be the envy is he the MVP of the league right now that is a different thing we've done nothing on this show but rave about him and frankly be floored by his performance for a month like now totally behind it let me say this i think he's going to be an MVP candidate in his career and and this year i think he's going to be my end up being one yeah the way it's trending but that's that's what we're talking about the idea of like get behind him i don't know what that means support him acknowledge that he's doing well i don't know what you're asking for what i'm asking today is is he the MVP of the league like people are suggesting and i'm saying no i don't think that's the case yet if you need me to do that you said when is the last time i've been this blown away by a rookie well he's doing things we've never really seen rookies do although i'd point out that last year at this time cj shroud had seven touchdowns and zero picks and was on his way to a pretty monster season for the Houston Texans so i mean that there are occasionally great rookies that Prescott had a year like that this looks like it could go down all time and that is why he if you're asking me is he the rookie of the year award front or no kidding yeah i wouldn't even bet on that because you're not getting any value at this point but the MVP of the league is different and i think that's what that call exemplifies a little bit of what i think what's happening is like you can't say anything other than the best thing you know whatever the most friendly nicest amazing thing is it's like no no this is amazing and it's incredible and it's awesome and he's been as we just said last segment the fourth fifth sixth best quarterback in football probably to this point and when that's the case you're an MVP candidate but the idea that we'll get behind him i don't i don't know what that means like stand behind him in a line or like what do you like what do i need to be a cheerleader voice voice your support and and that's the confusion i feel like every monday for provision 630 you you got a couple guys waving their pom-poms here on this show but if you're asking me is he the MVP of the league right now no i i don't think that he is 806361067 is it too early to have that conversation that's the question on the fan the seasons may be changing but the deals and the sharpest rides are unbeatable as ever hey what's going on it's your toyota let's go places with danny i'm grant this is the fan welcome back and thanks much for making the show part of your day the question at hand jadon daniel's mvb candidate nationally you see an analyst come out and say he is their mvp right now pretty cool brace it's the rookie quarterback who is seemingly playing like the answer here in the nation's capital do you think it's too early do you think you could make the case that he is the mvp of the nfl right now i got a text from a buddy during the break and he says i hear you but who's your mvp i really haven't thought about that but as i do i'm going well who would i put on my ballot ahead of daniels it's a very small list for the record yes it's not like a hundred names because it's one thing to pick daniels apart and say i don't know if he's an mvp because of this this you could do that with everybody all right so when you look at it through that perspective it definitely makes it more a conversation but i would say cj shroud i would put ahead of him on a ballot right now i like how he's played for houston and that's a really good team and a guy that in it i think it has been proven to be kind of less scheme and creation and more that guy is just awesome um lamar i think you could put ahead of him right now i think he's got nine touchdown and one or two interceptions and running all over the place we're going to see him this weekend he's been very good and without him the ravens would be in big big trouble that's correct i'm not a big sam darnold mvp guy but it's hard to argue with a five and oh team you know how that what that does to move the needle and vote it's not it's not alex smith five and i we either it's not like he's just checking it down he's made some so great place now he was much worse this past week yes he was and i think he's gonna fall off but if the mvp award was doled out today 103 rating 11 tuddies and four interceptions 1100 yards eight yards per attempt on an offense that's hummed it hasn't lost he'd be up there and then i know this sounds silly because he just hasn't played that well but patrick mohomes they are giving the ball right now to a running back that was on the street two weeks ago and their number one receiver this past week was cut because he couldn't make it for the patriots and they're still winning and mohomes is still putting up 300 yards this past week and they're still making it work so sorry i mean he's he's got to be there he's got to be those that would be my short list and then it's wide open i really like the way gino's playing we'll see him tonight i love the way jadon ganels is playing we'll obviously be seeing a lot of him yeah i think it's all fair i mean mohomes is someone i bet on more so than i would say should be ahead of daniels right now on my ballot if that makes sense like six touchdown six picks at this point from a home it's it's they're five and oh he's still the best quarterback in the world if i'm starting my team tomorrow i'm still picking it right nothing has changed in that regard but in terms of blind ballot style the resume for this year i i put daniel's head but the he's played better you're saying yeah but that's what you get but again i i'm trying to figure out like totally four and one versus five and one is not a big difference but they're five and oh because of patrick mohomes and their running back was available to be signed ten days ago and their leading receiver this past week was the sixth receiver for the patriots you're not going to tell me it's not impressive like i i won't be hearing that but just in terms of this particular word i'd still include josh alan i know he had a terrible week this past week but you look at the overall numbers you know i think it's uh eleven or twelve total touchdowns no interceptions uh that without him buffalo is the group that are sitting right here cap one arena allen before two games ago after three weeks was my i think he had played the best quarterback in the league to that point and they were three and oh let's go to the phones that gary's in fair facts on gnd gary is it too early for the national dialogue in the discourse on daniels as an mvp hey good afternoon guys somebody dana you're funny dude well you're sweet oh thank you hey look um i could argue for him just just based on the fact that all right this is like a a straw poll type thing that they do every year right at the at probably at the quarter mark of the season halfway through the season three quarters and so on so right now at the quarter point of the season i don't care what position we were talking about but does anybody has anybody else been voted uh uh you know quarterback you broke up but i'm guessing thank you for the call you were saying four out of five weeks i mean it's not that he's been voted quarterback of the week though he's been voted rookie of the week so that's just saying of all the rookies and football he's been better but it's not to take away i mean guys been utterly dominant and look the way he just said it is kind of interesting i think there's a point to be had here when we look at this and say ah seems crazy seems too soon we're basing it on that one rookie since 1950 has ever won the mvp it doesn't happen and it's not going to happen but he's saying if you gave out an mvp for the first five weeks of the season that's all he's saying if you gave out an mvp right now for the first five weeks of the season would it be crazy if he won the award and the answer to that is absolutely not correct so maybe it isn't too early to have and that's that's i haven't made a very good job of making that point but that is absolutely the point here is that this is not crazy talk like it's not stop it it's not like you had one good quarter or one good driver and let's go that's mvp like settle down uh you know a home reception but this is the fact is there is a legitimate conversation we started the show with this 30-13 has said this is the number one quarterback who has played the best this year jane gennels number one that's not insane you could say well that's probably he's probably third actually actually knew he posted before here's why i don't care we have one of the things we have the thing that every other team including mine for decades is jealous of and desirous of like it's here right now and you know what i got to keep figuring out for me is i am such a data driven numbers driven guy that you lose sometimes like the plays over the the stats the the plays over the numbers jade and daniels has incredible numbers too don't get me wrong which from a sheer passing standpoint it doesn't quite stack up early but obviously add in all the rushing it causes the gap but it's about the plays that he makes it's about the impact that you're having too eight hundred six three six one oh six seven if you want to hop on with us on grant and danny talking about jade and daniels as a possible mvp get back into that in two minutes thursday night football is tonight we got a good match up too three in two seattle two and three san francisco the story here is that first place for nows on the line in the nfc west the niners have been super banged up danny but rock party is playing very well giving them a chance every single week and they're running the ball exceptionally well with jordan mason replacing christian mccaffrey san francisco's just been terrible in the red zone they're still moving it their offense is prolific pretty dynamic until they get into the red area where they have really scuffled meanwhile for seattle it's a top 10 offense gino smith's leading the nfl in passing yards their defense is trending up under mike mcdonald they seem like a pretty good football team and a good test at home tough environment to play in for san francisco tonight i think this is going to be a great game yeah two straight losses for seattle remember they started three and all against a pretty soft schedule i might add denver before denver kind of throwing the corner uh patriots who they barely beat and the dolphins has wounded an animal you're gonna find they lost a good game to detroit back and forth they certainly moved the football to your point almost 520 total yards in that one this past week's the bad loss though at home to the giants losing that game the way they did where they just kept shooting themselves in the foot you sort of expected at the turn it never did they ran out of time and that's your ball game so that's one of those that's a bogey on a very makeable hole right that that you missed now you've got a wounded san francisco team that's both literally and figuratively uh without a couple of their stars that we're used to seeing and they've lost a couple games inexplicably as well they're both in a san francisco may be a bit more desperate than seattle is to kind of get right and kind of get their season underway but this is an important game for both teams that should be a good one speaking of makeable but miss they were lining up to kick the game time field goal at the horn last week and it was blocked in return for a touchdown they could have sent that game to over time against the giants and in fact probably should have because there was a penalty that didn't get called on the blocked field goal that said i mean the damage was already done yeah it's a couple of minutes left in the game and the giants have hung around in your building they just didn't play that well but san francisco is actually more interesting to me because they've lost three of their last four they're just trying to kind of part of the course they have float here survive what's going on with them yet get some bodies back but the two awful losses that they can't afford they lost by up 10 points in the fourth quarter twice it happened against the rams and it happened against the cardinals otherwise it's a different story they're four and one right now they led both of those games by double digits i saw some stat where like the rest of the nfl has lost two times all year in like 26 games when leading by 10 points in the fourth quarter and san francisco is oh and two in their losses they have them yeah in those situations so tonight should be entertaining nfc west matchup back to jadon daniel's though i was just thinking about this during the break we've been taking some really good calls you guys are providing uh some thought-provoking takes here even though i feel like the jadon daniel's mvp talk feels aggressive to me right now how will i feel if they beat the ravens and he balls out and i think that if they were to beat baltimore in a daniel's gem or even just a normal good performance like to me the bangles game is otherworldly's not gonna have one of those again i thought last week was just normal good the cardinals was just normal good but if he plays like that again he will have ripped off four straight awesome performances that are good quarterbacking games you will have won five in a row you'd be five in one and you'd have the signature roadwind on your ledger and at that point his resume's probably every bit as good as anybody's as we look at the other options that we're saying well he doesn't feel like he should win the mvp because he's a rookie and then you go well who's more deserving if they beat baltimore because of jadon daniel's this week and they're five in one do we still feel that way i mean at that point i think i would be willing next week after a really good win against a good team to to jump into these waters i i was thinking about when you asked the question was that i hadn't actually thought about that believe it or not and let's say we're just playing out scenarios right we can play if they get blown out he didn't play well we can do whatever you feel like but if let's do that when you just mention if they beat baltimore probably means that guy played pretty great you would think right just just given uh how they're built and what it was going to take maybe not great but well fair enough he's going to he's going to do something pretty good at a minimum if they go on a road and beat baltimore i don't know that any conversation is irresponsible anymore i agree and i think that's the point right and i'm not saying it's irresponsible now because the the betting market reflects it and we're trying to quantify what we're seeing and it's amazing and you say well what's the big difference of one game and i would say the big difference is the browns are terrible right the cardinals even though they just beat san francisco they pummeled the rams it had been up and down but i i think they're fine i don't think they're any better than that um since sennady is one one game all year they're good offensive with their terrible defensively a win in baltimore against the ravens when they need the game yeah this perennial contender two-time mvp who's healthy and and when he's right they feels bigger yeah they've won 75% of their games with Lamar jackson place like that's not nothing and the the record against the nfc we've gone through all these numbers uh ad nauseam if if they go on the road and beat baltimore as six or the six and a half points i think at the moment underdogs it's now to me i'm going have at it i i won't put any governors on anymore i i'm not going to put the uh the the slow down gate or the the lanes on the bowling alley right like let's go fast man let's go super sai the crazy thing you want to say say it you know like and all i'm doing now is saying let's let's slow down and enjoy what's happening because it's great but prognosticating more of this or an increase in this you know that may be ahead of the game and if you do this this weekend and they're five and one playing the way that they're playing playing the other plant but the opposite of that jagarin stuff can you imagine i i cannot wait to talk about that if that happens i got a tweet here i'm at grand h paulson on twitter and on instagram at grand h paulson danny is at funny danny guy says it feels aggressive to you because he's a rookie that is literally it there is no other logical explanation as to why you should not be just in the conversation all the numbers are there well first of all he's very much in the conversation he's number five on betting market so let's start there but in terms of what i'm saying is it feels aggressive for people to come out and say he is my mvp right now that feels like a bridge too far he's saying the only reason i feel that way is because he's a rookie and i think that's probably like 90 a percent of it maybe 95 percent of it i could quibble over pick some nits on a couple of guys you know who have the similar or better record or whatever or even a worse record who have maybe outperformed him and kept their team afloat maybe but he's right 90 percent of why i feel that way is because of precedent and because rookies don't win this award but i don't think that's nothing i think that that should be part of the equation no one's done it since 1952 whatever year it was jim brown's year to do it in a completely different league in a completely different era but what is him being a rookie means it means there's nothing to fall back on we don't know that this will sustain we don't know that this is going to be the case for 17 games for 18 weeks we don't know that he's going to continue to chop wood at this same rate i mean there's just no way to know that so yeah it is because he's a rookie because you know what happens with the rookies a lot of times they start fast and slow down you know what happens with the rookies there's ebbs and flows there's ups there's downs there's you know mountains and valleys so i will agree with him it's because he's a rookie that i feel that way but i don't think that makes it less a good point like i i think it is the point yeah it's maybe semantics but i think it feels aggressive because it's aggressive right where is it's not aggressive to assume pat and home's is going to have a great season even though he hasn't yet at pat and home's i got i got some track record there i got a lot of pelts on the wall where they might be middling but i'm gonna look up he'll have 4,800 yards 30 touchdowns maybe more picks than we're used to but i'll take the under on 4,800 this year with that all well you know what i mean like he's he's gonna have a great season you know the same with same with burrow same with allen same with a lot of these guys so when when we've never seen it there's no precedent in addition to the rookie part of it but people again i keep going back to my same thing i think people are trying to quantify the fact that washington was picking second in the draft just like houston was two years ago and now they're thought of as one of the better teams in the nfl the gap between where they started and where they are is so large and so profound that everybody's trying to heap how transformational this is i'm all trying to quantify the unquantifiable and so we can't go well you know what's probably great is that they kept to meet a pitcher and that helped some cotton do it and it really helps a lot that the cliff kingsberry went to the lab and redesigned this that the other thing the easiest thing to do is go the kid who's playing so well i'm so grateful i love him so much i'm so glad he's here but he's the mvp just because of how big the turnaround is if he was if he took over a program that was like perennially good like when russell wilson took over and see i don't know him was giving him mvp stuff even though they were they ten and ten and six is rookie or nine and seven whatever it was but they were already a pretty decent program and he's made some great plays he was really really good but no one's going that's the mvp i think just because of how big the gap is between last year and right now as to the fact that their relevant teams are and you know and networks are fighting over the right to broadcast their games for goodness sakes and it's oh jeez damn this weekend like that's what we're trying to do is is use the you know bigger words than he's playing great does that make sense let's go to the phones eight hundred six three six one oh six seven we got brian baldinger joining the show at three thirty on gnd we're at capital one arena the capital's fifty event is tonight they're kicking off their fiftieth season of hockey in the nation's capital on saturday evening here at cap one arena a damon's in oxen hill on grant and danny what's up danny um excuse me good afternoon gentlemen oh man i've been on hold for almost almost 40 minutes praying that a caller does not say anything that i want to do and as you and grant sit there and continue to talk y'all say everything that i was looking to say so i mean because y'all like disregard the fact that he's a rookie and and look at him as a football player he's having a phenomenal year yeah he's having this uh not so or it is so so subpar statistical season uh far as touchdowns but he's making up for it with dynamic plays uh but man we we probably sat and watched passion my homes start or when he watches full for first full season we was like wow why can't we hear that guy well let's accept that our wishes may have been granted we got that dude oh totally that's it yeah it looks like they got the guy and but not not i do think it's kind of to answer the question yes it is too early to be having the mvp conversation not about jane baneu but about all of them let's give it at least have to see that no i get that i understand that and appreciate the call as always buddy thanks for uh thanks for waiting thanks for checking us out the we we do it just because again it's a 24/7 news cycle yeah when you had to wait till sunday and then you saw the recap show and that was it we're now we're filling time and air so through two games dara cars the mvp or josh allen's mvp through five games are doing this right you know we're we're not just us but everybody talking about the other fells fill in the airspace so to a degree i you're right it's premature to say anybody's mvp maybe the guy that wins it we haven't even thought of yet or it's like 18th on the list but then has a great month or so eight hundred six three six one oh six seven is the number yeah i i think people keep kind of defaulting to like a conversation we're not having we're just like let's be happy that we found our my homes very happy everybody's giddy man i'm so happy i think everybody's really ecstatic about how he's playing i'm just looking at the youtube chat here and uh you know jay is upsets as we're clowns and somebody else you know anything you say that is not jade and daniels is the greatest quarterback who's ever lived people get pouty and they take their ball and they go home and if that's what you want to do go go ahead i mean i i think we're having a grown up mature conversation here which is to say that jade and daniels has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league and it feels a little aggressive to suggest after five weeks of football that he's the mvp of the league i'll apologize that i said if they win this weekend and he plays well that he might be my mvp then i'm not already ready to crown him but this is where we are i mean it's it's pretty amazing that after week two the same people said that the team's stunk and now if you don't say everyone on the team is headed to the hall of fame that uh you're a clown it's a good place to be in town i'll say that people are very fired up let's go to Ben and dc on granddaddy how are you Ben? i'm good i'm glad you guys doing good buddy um i'm going to switch was real yay for this one the grand i'm sorry man you uh sound like i mean you was saying that uh he's good and all that but right now this guy is not good this guy is amazing yeah he's the top five quarterback in the league so far listen and number one in a lot of spots number one in a lot of spots he has the number one offense yep number one he has different although we do he only has eight he has four running he has 300 rounds rushing he has four passing we not only playing guys like craving in all of us we're beating tar out of them people we it's not even close and dominating yeah right so get to film we are playing with house money we are already at the number that people surmise that we will be at for the whole entire season and we're not playing with them and don't forget that our defense looks like it's trying to come together improving multiple straight weeks yeah right and then we play a Baltimore who can't stop anyone from catching anything anywhere and this guy can throw the ball story terry the army brown and i'll tree over in the box we what do what why not why not him why not us why not right now at this moment that was the question at this moment who's the better quarterback right so i don't know if you were listening appreciate the call thanks buddy i i think Lamar has probably had a better overall season um i would say Stroud is right there darnold is right there but jadon's with him that's kind of the whole point i mean jadon is in the conversation clearly i just he's a rookie that's there five weeks in you're saying they're dominating everyone they dominated two teams over the last week and i'm really happy they did are they going to continue to do that i've got some anxiety about that we'll see that they play a real good team on the road this weekend let's go to sam and Fairfax on gnd how are you sam good how are you guys good buddy doing good buddy i completely agree with you guys um the people that are calling in and saying that you guys aren't for jadon daniels and aren't supporting jadon daniels because you aren't just giving a rookie the mvp through five weeks of his first NFL season i think he's ridiculous these are the same people that are calling in last year after two weeks saying sam howl is the franchise quarterback and will be for many years and then at the end of the season we're saying how terrible he was right so yes he's in the top five quarterback conversation right now absolutely but every rookie quarterback is gonna have a bad game throughout a year pretty much most quarterbacks in the NFL are gonna have a bad game in the NFL absolutely he's probably gonna run into a buzz saw defense at some point and play poorly right and so these are the same people that are gonna say he's not an mvp after having a bad game right but they're gonna say he's the mvp after having a few good games and yeah i mean yeah he's had flashes of being the mvp this year and i can't say that at times i think he's probably the best quarterback playing this year right now but we play the quarter of the games right so he has so much time left and there's gonna be games where he doesn't play great and maybe the defense is gonna have to step up and they don't and then people are gonna start saying well man they lost two in a row because he played poorly through a few interceptions didn't score a lot and they're gonna be like he's not the mvp right so yeah he's had a great stretch of games but you have to wait and see you know like i agree with you maybe if he walks into Baltimore and she beats them and she plays outstanding and the defense doesn't really help them a whole lot but they still win because of him sure then you can maybe say yeah even if he has a bad game that doesn't really like stop the mvp talks because she walked into Baltimore and single-handedly won the game appreciate you buddy thank you i think these are like Heisman Trophy winning games when you're in college at lsu when alabama plays against lsu and the top spot in the scc's on the line that performance is weighted over lsu playing some number yep where he goes crazy this is one of those games just like bunny night football with the world watching he had the crazy that's the biggest deposit in the bank so far absolutely everyone's watching and he played that game he did against the Ravens is going to be more weighted probably than the four o'clock window game against the Cardinals right so if he goes out and plays a great football game in the number one ranked offense in the NFL and scoring Washington hangs 30 again for a fourth straight week first team to ever do it with a rookie quarterback then yeah i think this time next week we will absolutely be talking about him in the mvp discussion i mean he's already in the discussion we will absolutely be saying he is every bit as good a chance as anybody else to win the mvp right right now there's four guys with odds that are a lot better than him and that's kind of my point when you see a national analyst going jadon dangles is my mvp he's 12 to 1 in betting markets there's guys that are two to one three to one six to one seven to one they're bypassing it's a little bit odd but you get the excitement i just think we're in a mode now and it's kind of evidenced as well by some of the feedback we're getting where everyone is so happy and you and i included that if there's anything other than just throwing a log on the fire of greatest team in the world greatest player in the world never gonna lose print your super bowl tickets the reaction is kind of like oh you hate okay yep i guess i suppose saying this guy's doing something historical and the team is one of the best in football he's been great say it i think they're gonna win the division and he's gonna be the rookie of the year i love him and i'm glad he's here but say it more say it louder okay we'll be the bad guys i guess we were the bad guys when you guys were all you know telling us we were wrong a lot of other times that didn't work out that way but i hope we are this time for sure eight hundred six three six one oh six seven is how you can hop aboard on grant and Danny brian bolding her joins us next i believe we're gonna have Luke McCaffrey for a few minutes at the end of the hour as well on the fan this commanders is going to join us coming up in a little over ten minutes make sure you're listening right now though we're sneaking in our buddy brian baldinger because he's one of our favorite analysts and as we're getting ready for the biggest game of the season so far for washington there was nobody we wanted to break it down with more baldy thanks for a few i've been seeing some of your analysis and film breakdowns on the commanders getting fired up i know like the rest of us you like what you're seeing yeah i do uh i mean that's a good defense that they carved up last week against cleveland those are some good corners you know to see that touchdown throw uh from jade into diony brown against uh you know martin emerson i got a lot of respect for martin emerson he's a good corner darmy ran right by him and the throw was unbelievable the throw to terry mcclaren for 66 yards on a broken play a scramble drill um you know avoiding zadaria smith and do so doing it's just an amazing throw the third down throws the luke mccaffrey the protections against miles garret and how they get it like oh it's it's it's really good you know i mean i know who jeremy mick nickels is he's been you know he's drafted 2017 i know the kid like he he's been he's always 19 he scored one touchdown his career he's got three in the last two weeks i mean everything you're doing right now was working outside of a couple drop passes last week both you mentioned protection that's the thing i've been amazed about uh to to this point is that daniel says that time and when he hasn't that time he just makes teams pay with you know double the yard scrambles but how are they protecting so all that i've been blown away by how good they are in that department well it started rookie in coldman but you know uh luke is playing out there and they're split reps they split reps last week you know whether it was injury related i don't know but you know two different guys man in position i mean the big acquisition was bia dish i mean you guys a good player really good player i mean doesn't go to pro bowls or anything but he's a solid player i know the kid down at duke manny weather's all off season working on his core working on his strength loves the game you know i think he's made alla granny better cause he's coming on um while he's just so steady i mean it's a good group up front you know and then cook does a good job of chipping with his tight ends they're not great blockers but he's chipping with them he's they know what they're supposed to do over there so i mean the protection's been good but like you said i mean you go back to week one against hot bowls in that defense and you know taught i mean it was 37 16 top bowls are still blitzing them with a minute to go in a game you're still coming after him but he picked the blitz with his with runny and uh you know he's such a fast twitch guy i mean the dearest myth could be right in front of him and he can make a miss you know i mean it's just uh it's remarkable because i always say this about him and i've been told in five weeks now but like he's really really fast but he's never in a hurry and that's a great calmness to have as a quarterback brian baldinger on grant and danny here on the fan baldy what else can you say about what we've seen from daniels to dive into some of the decision-making you know one of the things i saw in college that i worried about was he didn't get out of the pocket and throw ever i think there were like eight times or something he threw while scrambling all of last year he's already showing some propensity to leave the pocket to throw which is man that would be a big development in a game changer well he's really coachable i mean you you just you know talk to brian kelly and ellish you about him when he came from arizona state i mean he wasn't a runner at arizona state he added that component to it you watched the alabama game last year and to your point he went to run you know and you go he can survive you know this game against alabama much less do it in the NFL but you know his eyes are up the throat and tearing the car and he could have easily just run right there but his eyes are up and he saw him a car and come from the other side of the field and they just launched a bomb you know and so uh he's not just running to run he's running to make a play and if it's not there then he takes off and he's pretty good i mean i've seen him hit probably a couple times where he probably doesn't need to take that shot probably use to get down a little sooner but you know he's running out of bounds he's sliding he's protecting himself pretty good uh but look he's he he's always he breaks the pocket he doesn't leave just to leave i mean he gives he he looks at what he's supposed to look at and then he's looking to buy time and to extend the play and make the play so whatever they teach them cliff whatever it is like he's a he's a good student because he's learning well do you mention cliff uh kingsbury offensive coordinator i wasn't sure to be quite frankly i didn't know what to expect in terms of fit here etc etc so far you know the choir is singing man it's been unbelievable to watch it seems like they've got something to have an answer for everything it seems like defenses are befuddled as to what to try to take away and it's resulted in nothing being taken away to this point what have you made from that you fit there with kingsbury and daniels well the you know the little known fact about cliff is you know i i get a lot of big 12 games it was out in law bick when he was there a bunch coach at texas tech i always had 10 new plays on his whiteboard every single week that he was trying out but the the the really he always spread teams out even in the big 12 even at texas a&m he spread teams out to run it like and they're a very good running football team right now you know echler mr week mikdickles picks up brian is really super loud obviously the quarterback is special but you know they're they're a very good running football team they can melt the clock that's a good defensive front they ran the ball up and down the field on them and that's really the hit jewel and then if you just look at the design of the offense because you sort of call plays with the predictability of what defense you're going to get cleveland's a big man covered steam they had their man beaters up um the receivers won routes they come back to terra mccarn in the first quarters of 20 yard come back on timing now you don't do that by accident you do you do that by putting in hours and hours of work um and mccarn's like he's he's at the top of his route he's separate he's coming back the balls in the air it's right we're supposed to be like you see that over and over again and that's not easy to run 20 yard comebacks in this league against good corners like Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson but they did so they're getting worked on in practice um Cliff is a great play call I noticed um I don't know if it was last week or it wasn't last week it was it was probably the week before when they blew out Arizona I saw some sidelines shots of him he his honestly he had the smallest play chart for a long time when he was in Arizona Texas that he couldn't put it in an index card and now he noticed the play sheet is a lot bigger than it used to be ever and so I feel like that means the quarterback is digesting a lot and he can handle a lot more and so he's given him a lot more right now probably at the line of scrimmage two three plays called he chooses it like I think he's given him more than I thought I'm doing the game in a couple weeks in Chicago makes you talk to Cliff before the game just to see if I want to look at his play chart and see if it's pretty advanced for a kid that's going to probably make him his eighth starter yeah I can't wait to have Baldi on the call he's going to be on commander's bears with the number one overall pick Caleb Williams has been playing a lot better this past week especially and the number two overall pick Jaden Daniels who early on is running away with the rookie of the year award four rookie of the week honors in the first five weeks Baldi it'll be a quick visit I suppose because we got Luke McCaffrey calling in a few but I do want to get your thoughts here on commander's Ravens because this is the game it seems like that everybody wants to get their hands on so in our final few minutes here give us your detailed Baldi breakdown here on Washington and Baltimore we're fired up well I just did the Raven since that again last week so I saw him up close Lamar is at another MVP level he's playing better than he ever did last year already in large part because of Derek Henry but the play the play of Justice Hill they've they've kind of fixed what the offense line is now it took a couple weeks to get it right but McCarry is that left guard and Rosa Garden is their right tackle they got that fixed they got Mark Andrews back and playing really good football right now for the first time they are a juggernaut in offense defensively they have a lot of problems right now they lost a lot in coaching they lost your Debbie and clownie they lost Patrick Queen they've got good players there don't get me wrong but they they don't look like the same defense anywhere that they were a year ago and so I think they're very vulnerable I mean Joe burrow looked like he could have scored anytime he wanted to last week practically did they've got a lot of holes defensively I'm anxious to see Cliff and how he attacks them because I think there's a lot of things they're good in the middle like they always are the big and stout up front but there's there's there's running lanes on the edges and there's certainly passing lanes down the field they got exposed by Jamar and T and that group in Cincinnati last week big time and I think those are still vulnerable areas Baldi you're the best man always appreciate the time have a great weekend Hey I look yeah thanks guys enjoyed this game it's gonna be special this Sunday we've been waiting for this around here for a long time you know that Baldi we will see you at Landover Maryland's northwest stadium in just a couple of weeks Baldi will be on the call of the commanders and the Bears Luke McCaffrey is going to join us so let's get ready for the wide receiver whose arrows trending up in this offense next on G&D Live from Capital One Arena ahead of today's caps 50 event dealers stopping for a great deal on the rugged and capable Honda pilot contact your local Washington area Honda dealers today today was one of those days jeeps every once in a while you get this little splinter in your mind I don't know if you still get this as a grown-up but sometimes I just want a burger all I've been thinking about all day long is having a burger I don't know why the burger gets that special treatment sometimes in our brains I've had things recently remember that day I came in I was obsessed with talking about cheesetakes and then I like made it my quest like a cheesesteak. That was like a multi-day voyage for you to get a cheesesteak. I just woke up one morning going I remember Philadelphia Cheesesteak factory in Georgetown late night I put all of their kids through college just eating so many cheesetakes late night right so I want to what I'm a quest and I got it today I wanted a burger and that's what we had once we got here at the cap and want to rain up we honed uh burgers from all about burger which is pretty good I hadn't been there before I liked it would try again but I'm wondering from you if you'd like to chime in here what are some of the other foodstuffs where you go I get that craving that's what I got a half like I need that you get in that like you know me like I need a burger like I just want a burger and that's what you go get I would say the one for me is at night with sweets and that's really the only cravings I get because the good thing about eating terribly all the time uh-huh is that you don't start missing anything because you always have it wouldn't have been missing it Bob right you just do it yeah the norm is oh what am I eating today do I want a burger do I want your polo you just kind of eat terribly and then you let people make fun of you or whatever but at least you enjoy the food story yeah yeah um so that's the good thing that the bad thing is when you don't eat things that you like often enough that you prefer you start missing out on them and for me that's just sweets at night because I try not to eat after day I try to cut that yeah that's kind of the tough thing uh let's go right now to the hotline and welcome on to the show Luke McCaffrey if you're Washington commanders who are coming off of a fourth consecutive win they are four and one and they've got the Baltimore Ravens on the road on Sunday a chance to get to five in one for the first time since 1996 Luke and welcome back to the show man thank you for the time hey how you doing thank you so much for having me we're great dude uh we love wins so much this is a blast is it how is it more go to work or more having fun at this stage and like what's the balance you gotta obviously have to work hard to maintain the level you guys are playing at but it's also got to be fun what's what's like the bigger pile yeah I think it's been so cool you know you look all the way back to OTAs and just how much passion that everybody in this building and everybody on this team has for football it's been a lot of fun to write I don't know if we've been coming to work yet ever since OTAs even when we weren't on a winning streak and so I think it's so fun to just be a part of an environment like that and then you know when that has six it reassures your faith in a way but I think there was already a level of faith that we built through OTAs of just trusting the process and and having fun every day are you surprised that you guys are four and one right now yeah I I don't know I would say surprise I think we all have just bought an end to the process and and we've really enjoyed coming out and competing every rep and and I think what's so cool about it is we've seen a lot of growth from OTAs to camp we've seen a lot of growth or growth through you know day one of camp to the end of camp and now week one to to going into week five six and hopefully we can continue to to get better every week and and just stay intentful on every single rep every single play and making the most out of every single day. Luke McCaffrey with this year on G&D. Luke big one this weekend the Ravens are are good they've been good uh you know not having the gangbusters season we're used to from them but everyone feels to myself included like it's only a matter of time what kind of challenge did they bring and you know it's kind of what do you make of them from afar yeah they're a really good football team you know they know how to win I think when you get to the NFL every team is going to have good players and every team is going to have you know some level of success and so to have a team with a lot of just competitors a lot of people who who play the game at a high level is there's always a challenge each and every week I think they do a good job of playing as a team which is something you know I know we take pride of in our building and I think it'll be a great competitive match up and it'll be a good good one for us to go out there and compete. Luke you guys have had success on the road uh dating back really since week one in Tampa the trip to Cincinnati Danny and I were in the crowd it was unbelievably loud the atmosphere was as good as it's going to be anywhere else Baltimore with involved right Danny actually looked at me right before the game and he's like this is going to go very poorly I won't tell you exactly what he said but he said oh Lordy yeah this is going to be the environment was so intimidating you you have a little face wow exactly so but I say that to tell you guys work the bangles offensively then you go to Arizona you do big things are you at a point where you feel like you're comfortable in those environments it's been low penalty counts or is it too early to say that yeah I mean again I think it just comes down to every game's different every game's a different atmosphere I go back to Cenci and I think that was just such a an awesome environment that that I think we all fed off of uh you go to Arizona and I I don't know if you can clarify that one as an away game I think we probably had more fans than them and so when it comes on just having that advantage having that having that atmosphere was cool to see that covered in burgundy and gold and then you know I think we just got to stay focused on play at a time and just you know communicating and detailing everything we do. Luke I forgot the other day Grant reminded me of this I mean I guess I knew if pressed but I was reminded of the fact that you still haven't been playing receiver for all that long right this is still relatively new to you and I want to get into that process with you a little bit where you know the finer points the nuances that a lot of people can't do you know you're picking up obviously really really rapidly how much do you feel you've grown so far and and you know talk about that process of learning a position on the fly at the highest level there is. Yeah it's been a lot of fun you know I've been playing receiver about a year and a half now and I think I was blessed I have a lot of great people around me when I first switched that were able to help me whether it was through my my team or whether it was through my family and you know guys are in the receiver room different coaches and then once I got here I think that just highlighted even more between Bobby Ingram Andre Coleman who's our assistant receiver coach you know Terry Ozi down me then you know with Noah Brown got here at the end of camp I think just from top to bottom it's been really fun to to be around a lot of people with a lot of great experience because at the end of the day experience is going to be the number one way to learn and making mistakes and going full speed and and I think when I when I've been blessed to be around a lot of guys who have a lot of experience it's allowed me to kind of just learn from from the moments that they've had in their career and they've had endless amounts of moments of whether it's growth or whether it's success just a lot of reps at at play in the position at a high level playing inside and outside at times kind of all over the formation you I'd imagine you go up against not one or two but several DB's over the course of the game how do you prepare do you study the nuances of several different defenders on film or are you just more looking at things from the 10,000 foot view of scheme and you're not really looking at Marlon Humphrey or individual corners like what is that like yeah I think a lot goes into it we do a great job of you know preparing in general and getting you know the feel for how their personality is what what their attitude is and then also honing in on the details so there's definitely a little bit of both of that I think as a player you know the biggest thing is to just play fast you know we have a state saying go run and hit and so I think that speaks volumes of you know you're you're gonna have the knowledge that you gained throughout the week and then once you get to the game you kind of just have to go run and hit and everything else will just be a reaction and so I think throughout the week we do a great job of studying individual players and then you know studying the overall scheme and then once you get to the field you're out there just reacting right just just playing fast and using your instincts how about for you kind of on your own time will you hit up either Christian or your pops to get insight on especially Christian who's played the Ravens so many times and get any intel that way or have your dad look at any tape or anything or do you not really tap into those resources because you got enough help in the building what's your logic on that yeah no we we help each other a lot uh I mean there's only so much you can do and there's only so much that that you can find out that you know we we haven't looked at or seen in our building every once in a while you'll get a good kid but or two but they they also have their own games to to prepare for and so it's it's a lot of fun having those resources to kind of bounce different ideas back and forth but you know it's awesome to have the resources we have in the building too and just enjoy the the different scouting reports the different opinions and the different you know hard work that everybody puts in look at what stages this offense and I guess what I mean is it's you guys have been unbelievable you're scoring so many points and uh trespassing what like a month without punting a numbers approximate it's been incredible but like in terms of where you guys are right now and what some of the stuff you might be doing in two months or you know December or whatever like like what if we like what I guess a longer a longer way of asking a very simple thing like what percentage of the offense have we seen to this point like how much is waiting in the wings to surprise people I think this offense is so fun because it has the potential and possibility to do a lot of different things you can bring a lot of different personnel groups and you can have a lot of different motions and shifts and then you know you add tempo to it and you add a running quarterback and and it really opens up you know anything that you could think of in the creative world of football right and so uh in terms of what what we put in or don't put in I think it's very very specific and detailed to you know what team we're playing and so I don't know if if that's a way that we necessarily think about it is by percentage of offense in but I think it's it's more a reaction and a constant flow maybe like a picture like your you're painting something right we've all watched Bob Ross and and you're going there and he's painting something and it looks like just a bunch of scribbles and then you kind of see it play out for us that's every week right we're trying to build our painting and build you know our game plan and then decide how we want to attack a team and how we want to you know create change ups and counters to you know our main way and then what what's going to happen is that doesn't work or if they come out in a different different thing and you know it's always a constant life form of of you know processing creating something on the go and on the fly is Bob Ross your painter of choice oh I I don't know I don't I don't know if I have a painter of choice but I do love to put that that show on in the background well it's so relaxing it's not that bad right it's pretty good I told you in the locker room by the way that we were big on the chocolate lava cake conversation last week after you hung up so if you score a touchdown or you go for a handle at any point it's chocolate lava cake Monday on Grant and Danny no pressure oh that's incredible well shoot let's uh let's go for it then let's do this thing let's do it in Baltimore why not and if you can mind a chocolate lava cake end zone celebration somehow I don't know how you do that but if you did that that would that would go a long way I don't know that we we got to get a local middle school or something and get them chocolate lava cakes for uh commanders later something I like that I like what your head says love it look be good man go get another win thanks for the time appreciate you dude minute so we did not have the blitz planned for you we will not be doing your beltway blitz today although we can quickly take inventory on the teams in town as we normally would on the blitz the capitals have a big event tonight caps 50 a lot of people are coming out for all the activations 70 former players all of the current players on the roster tonight culminates with a concert of third eye blind behind us in the arena this evening gonna be a pretty raucous environment i'm excited to see all the caps fans back for the first time since last year and on top of all of that Danny they open the season on saturday night they will be right here at the arena to take on the new jersey and the josh arris poll there on on uh on saturday uh we we obviously have spent a ton of time talking about the football team rightfully so with what's happened but uh to me there's a lot of questions with the caps and they're different than the previous years questions in other words when you go yeah where are they going to get an equalist backstrum or katija oh she'd be healthy enough or you know some of these things we're talking about huge salary players that may not be able to live up to the billing anymore and those guys are heroes i'm not saying that criticizing but you're simply saying it's hard when a quarter of your salary cap is thought up in guys that can't produce at that same level anymore so now in addition to ovie's goal chase you're folding in a bunch of new pieces and how the new pieces fit in and what they're sealing is to me is the question with the capitol's right now i don't have a you i mean you're you're closer to what i am i don't have a great feel for quote-unquote how good they're going to be in a crowded eastern conference yeah i don't think anybody does because it's a brand new roster with a lot of players and lines that haven't played together before so it's pretty impossible to know what they're going to be how quickly do they come together how quickly can carbs get them all to play as one unit i mean those are going to be the answers to that question but you mentioned in passing their ovie's goal chase that is still the number one story as the story man for a lot of people in this town he has 41 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky he needs 42 to break the record we had john carlson on a few days ago and he joked he's picking 43 goals for ov so not only the record but one bonus goal for him this year but yeah i'm just fired up for the new roster they had a lot of money to spend sadly without backstrom and without oshi two guys that are essentially now going into retirement still on the roster but on long-term injured reserve andrew manji apani is on the top line with dylan strowman alex ovechkin wearing number 88 on the second line it'll be centered by p_r luke du bla with connor mich michael and tom wilson the third line is mostly guys that you're familiar with but maybe the best story on the team right now jake verana's back crazy and v who left and had all kinds of personal trouble and was in and out of you know different programs with the league to try to get him back on his feet is now living a good life and playing for the washing capitals again which is pretty amazing the fourth line is two-thirds new with brand into ham and taylor radish around nik dow who's still centering that group in his mid-thirties one of our favorites defensively carlson's gonna skate on the top defensive pair with jacob chikrin matt roy's gonna be with marty ferivari on the second defensive pairing and in the net while charlie lindgren's still gonna play a huge role for them they brought in former vegas goldenite logan tomsen who could end up being their goalie one this year so it's a very very new roster they've got a lot more veteran talent and a lot more veterans period and i think that should help them to be a playoff caliber team this year it the the excitement is over you know folding in some of these new pieces and and guys that you know come in with there's a reason you can get a peer luke to boa right at his age with his talent level it's because quite frankly there's their baggage on all of his the right word that's that's probably too harsh of word you think of that with like a diva wide receiver that's quit on people it's not quite there but you're going god you're so talented where's my huge production to match it and the capitals this is something that you could say it's a really big complement to the organization have been incredible incredible at taking the oh you don't want him watch what we do i call it the brett connelli corollary right where you get folded in and your best self comes through they figure out what you do well and and you get maximized here i'm hoping that's another example here to the wizards who played in the preseason last night i'm not kashan george looked very good he got rave reviews you heard tobi in the updates and 14 points five of six shooting he was kind of the star of their preseason game uh he is six foot eight uh he's got a big time wingspan he's only 20 years old he showed well defensively and then they also when they played their first preseason game got a really strong effort from alexor they're top rookie draft pick so there's a lot of problems they're gonna have to iron out they turn the ball over i think 30 times last night just in the first quarter to be clear they're going to be really really bad yes like i'm not suggesting otherwise but what i care about is what does bob carrington look like this kashan george proved to be a player who i think they took 24th overall is alex sar going to be better offensively than it looked like he was going to be when he was kind of a disaster in the the summer league those are the priorities and so far through a couple preseason games there's been some good signs sar by the way 12 points and nine boards with three blocks last night against the nick he didn't shoot it great but you can't take your eyes off him i'm telling you like i i will take my chance on that guy and a lot of people are rolling their eyes and whatever but someone that's that big that physical that athletic who moves around the way that he does it can be harnessed right he's still just a kid uh at this point but the the guy wanted to call it you said it kashan george it is a beautiful shooting stroke how you know how developed he gets physically how quick he can be is there more explosion in the tank he's he grew up as a ball handler so he knows how to play the game a little bit but i think he's maybe a little bit away from being able to really contribute i think that's what this year is going to be about but to your point it's this is the sar kulabali uh george carrington and maybe name another guy or two that might be here for a while show and i'm here for it and on the nationals front nothing doing it is all quiet off seasons underway playoff baseball has been excellent so far i will say as far as the nationals go until we all ties her and i on a new episode of bust and lose baseball documented this in detail if you listen to it tonight when we're done but it is time to spend money this off season i will be mad if they don't spend money they have been given time people have been patient i think we all bought in on and understand it there's a rebuild happening and it's going to take a few seasons but they've got enough young talent now with c_j_ abrams dylan cruz james wood both haven't graduated this year mckenzie gore j kirvin in the rotation some of the other young players like michaal parker and d_j_ hers who have come on there's no reason they don't supplement that young talent with actual veteran free agent additions that come with money i hope mike rizzo doesn't have to trade pieces of the system away to get better because ownership isn't willing to spend the time is now and they need open up their checkbooks this winter what is your gut to will they i think it's going to be less than i want in more than zero like they're obviously not going to do what they did the last few years because i have no payroll i mean it would be utterly embarrassing for them it would be the marlins that they they literally would have like straw spurt and nothing else on the payroll so my gut is that they're going to sign like nick pavetta and that they're going to like bring back trevor williams and bring it you know maybe trade for like jake burger from the marlins or something and they're going to be like see we added some talent look at all the spending we've got saying what they should do is sign christian walker at first base i probably wouldn't sign anthony sonton dara forty home or baton right field because i think eventually that's a bad contract but it's like a four-year eighty million type deal for him maybe i would sign a bat or two and i would sign a veteran starting picture could be like a number two type starter for them that would be my hope i think it's less than that and more than zero is where they ultimately settle yeah i think it's going to be barely above zero i don't have i'm not sourcing anything it's not like i'm talking to anybody behind the scenes just just my gut just in here and what i hear yeah uh like all my source reports indicated i'm not doing that i'm just just the vibe i get you just don't trust them yeah at this stage i think just i don't know i don't have a better way to put it in that the hope is it's because it's obvious this is your 2011 team right that okay now you've got some young pieces on the way that's when you go get your jason worth not because that you're you're going to be great but because it's time to start saying that you're serious again and then that's the year before the year where you end up winning 98 games they're in that same spot now history's repeating itself the baseball playoffs continuing today with two american league games where teams are facing elimination who you're rooting for here the guardians are taken on the upstart Detroit tigers who aren't very good but are red hot i mean it's amazing what Detroit's doing they're now up two games to one in that division series a game away from an alc s birth and the Yankees have a chance to finish off the royals tonight as well new york took a two to one lead on kansas city on shan carlo stanton solo home run late last evening i'll be pulling for cleveland to come back and force a game five and oddly i want the Yankees to win and get to the alc s the strangest that sounds i'm rooting for one so do because i love them so much i will never root for the Yankees that is a no from me they are the worst and i can't stand them so every time they lose it is good so i don't care a place for them so that is my first thing so go royals which means congrats to the Yankees for the other series i i go back and forth on this like detroitus that's fun how cool is that right this team that has has been as bad as anybody they have zero success to show for the last you know several decades we really need if they were able to do something but again it kind of goes to my one of the principles you and i've been talking offline a little bit about this i've been tweeted about this last line at funny danny like it's neat when an upset happens but when it's no longer an upset when it's now once again a five seed and a six seed are going to be in the alc s and the nlc s it now becomes more normal the wild card team that hasn't been as good that's 20 games worse than what some of these division winners sometimes more is you know red hot and boiling through the playoffs is everybody else that's been great for seven months has to just sort of sit around and wait for them to figure it out there's not enough advantage for the good teams not enough disadvantage for the bad teams so i want to encourage teams that have been good for a year basically to get more out of it and that doesn't seem to be happening yeah i tend to agree with that i think it's better for the playoffs if the good teams play for world series titles the occasional upset is cool it's a great story you need to have the possibility of an upset yeah but it should not be the norm right we need to minor in those and major in the best teams making deep runs routinely and consistently and that's not what's happening right now last year the rangers were not that good all season they ended up getting hot and winning the world series now you could say the same thing about the 2019 that's what it did for this city in that fan base i understand that but that every 10 years is special and fun but when the diamond backs just get on a roll and go to the world series okay i guess yeah it happened last year i wanted to stand out when the 83 win team gets red hot and and you know the cardiac kids or they never said died this or that when it's nothing but five and six seeds all the time tells you something's wrong with your structure i do not have a good system to replace this one with for baseball and that's why i haven't been all that adam and about yelling about this one but this one does not work that well because the layoff for the division series team that that's the favorite that doesn't have to play in the wild card is hurtful and makes it hard to win i think now that the national league favorite has never won that division series over the team that uh you know got through the wild card we play them believe we've got some breaking news coming in right now we've been going round the horn to all the teams in d_c_ sports as we get to the commanders we've got some breaking news breaking news on the fan is brought to you by bet ql smarter bet start with bet ql get three free days of that you'll access by downloading the bet ql app or visiting bet ql dot com the commanders have waved quarterback sam heartman there's an open spot on the practice squad he could potentially return then with quarterback marcus mariota returning last week to his normal backup role the commanders have waved quarterback sam heartman i'm toby altizer with breaking news on the fan if you listen closely that sound is women all over washington d_c sighing as sam heartman the most handsome washington commander and one of the best looking players in d_c_ sports has been released let me just real quick text my wife i was gonna say does she know make sure she's okay i have bad news uh go ahead danny i'm gonna text her that's fine uh he's less than half of uh our age and uh my wife knows who he is you know what i mean like this isn't a guy that's playing every day this isn't a dude that's starting she wasn't familiar with what was going on at wake forest in their program or when he transferred a Notre Dame but she found out about sam heartman and had questions for me about sam heart see what i'm saying that wasn't like hey jade dannell's hypertrophy winner the guy that's going to change the entire fortunes of this more about franchise they've been bad for so long he might make you great no no the questions are about sam heartman how much is he going to play is he going to be a public relations guy is he going to to be there at games uh will he have his helmet up so i can see him these are the kind of questions i was asked that main that he's got those long flowing locks it's tough it's a tough loss words come to mind not like arm strength or accuracy or you know pocket presence words like dreamboat yes like fox right like honk those are the words that comes to mind with sam heartman i believe there is a chance that they will stash him on the practice squad that he'll be added to the p squad is like the organizational project you know long-term backup type guy because you know a dress school or a mariot or those guys are here or not year to year also by all accounts heartman and daniels are very close they have a really good relationship uh they study together do a lot of work together so it would not surprise me at all if heartman was added to the p squad it's possible i guess if another team only has two quarterbacks that they might see him cut by the number one offense with all the points and bring him in and pick his brain a little bit and want him as their third quarterback in another building or pay him a little more to be on their practice squad but sam heartman released by the commanders just a few minutes ago last week for the first time in my life that i could remember covering a game washing it at four quarterbacks on their 53 men roster on game day wow they had heartmen deactivated they had driscoll as the emergency third and then mariota backing up daniels so you knew something would have to give and today was the day that it did which free agent additions for the commanders have impressed the most as anybody so far that adam peters brought in you know been a disappointment that's a very very small list if we can even make one let's get into that next right here on the fan it seems to me like adam peters is possibly not getting enough credit for everything going on in washington right now want to talk about their free agent class in just a bit as a reminder though we've got caps tickets we're giving away before the end of the show we'll do that at six o'clock right here on the fan we're taking you up to six 30 tonight we are at capital on arena head of the caps 50 event they got the whole team coming out to celebrate with fans 50 years of caps hockey a third eye blind concert tonight among the uh cool activations that they've got out here real quick i thought we could just go through the free agent signings this off season letter grades a to f based on the first quarter here at the quarter poll and how we feel then i want to go back and have larger conversations let's just run through this nick allegretti has been starting at left guard a i mean for what they paid my god i would say a plus if we're accounting for what they've paid but yeah we'll go with an a dorren's arm strong at defensive end b i'll say b plus the last two games have been tremendous dorren's arm strong first couple of weeks was not overly noticeable but right now he's right there top the leaderboard with frankie lubu and sachs for the team tyler biata shit center a plus plus extra credit he's make he's like ruining the curve for everybody else yeah i will say a plus jeremy chin it's safety that's tough one um b for me i'll say b minus again first couple of weeks i probably would have had a c or lower but i think he's actually been pretty good the last couple of weeks michael davis they missed on michael davis yeah that is a d he's played special teams he played a little bit on the defensive side at corner and it didn't go well and they benched him so it didn't work but they didn't but it caused so little like the value of it to me so it's like one of those this is a pop quiz when you didn't do the reading and it really isn't going to affect your grade one way or the other so you have to you have to have your parents sign it right i'm going to demonus but it doesn't matter we are we have a final we have like 17 projects that matter so yeah that's a d but they evaluated michael davis is a guy they wanted on their team because they thought he'd be good and i think they evaluated him wrong they paint him what they're playing quill and ferrell and that's a better way to do it where they right or wrong right then then letter so yes i'll say wrong there pass by michael deter who they brought in to be an interior backup basically he's played a little bit when hallegride he's got banged up so far that's a win for that that's it's a win jeff driscoll that's a win for them yep austin echler a a plus plus all the numbers every positive thing you could say a plus as well now here's a guy that you beat up i think unfairly but that's your own thing zach irks i'm going to say he's been an a so far he's been a great blocker he's been heavily involved in the passing game and most importantly and i didn't think he would he has stayed healthy so far he has yeah no no it's a win because again they paid nothing it's you know he's uh i think he's got a two million dollar cap hit i would i would absolutely take that in terms of leading that position group uh being a valuable resource now he had i don't like he's done everything that i would have loved in terms of just holding on to the damn football uh you know he should have caught a pass right before down the ground caught a touchdown pass down the ground shouldn't have been able to catch it because they should have been first in the goal in the red zone on a crossing route that urch just didn't catch but yeah overall he's been incredibly positive so yes and that's not even the drop where they needed replay assistance right to make sure that it wasn't a fumble which by the way he did fumble against the bangles could have cost him the game but i'll agree he saved his bacon kleland pharaoh first two weeks at a sack in each game more cleanup sacks for doron pain plays he's been hurt mostly since but i'd say so far that has worked out yeah that is that is a win that's not one of those slam dunk you know hundred out of hundreds it's probably a a beam on his type thing but it's a win don't take valor i'd say so far they were right about he's helped them although not a big win like they don't get enough pass rush from their defensive ends and he has mostly been quiet he's had a couple of sacks now one in a game where they had seven against a completely broken to chan watson and then another sack that was kind of a covered sack memory serves a couple of weeks before that but i would say valor's been like a sea minus i mean it's a situational pass rush yeah that you don't pay a lot of money to but if the idea was we're bringing him in because we think on passing downs he's gonna be a demon that is not happening right i mean he makes the you know cap it's the same as john baits or or tressway so to me that's a win no egg benogany's been awesome that's a win huge time victory yep frankie lubu goes in the a plus plus plus plus frankie lubu has been a game changer for them in terms of their culture he's been awesome for the defensive mindset i think in getting buys per getting guys prepared also you know having guys in game play with energy and then on top of all of those intangible things that people might not care as much about i think frankie lubu's also been just a really good player like you've done some really good thing hyper productive you know uh brian balder we had on earlier on the show had a really good breakdown about how washington's linebackers are starting to play really well together and sink and kind of feed off each other and he showed four or five different clips lubu was lined up in a different spot on each one of the highlights one on the fourth down where he knifes in there and and and uh and it taps the ball carrier that's going to end up falling short on that in a huge fourth down play one where he's you know uh blitz it up in the a gap mugging up a billion different things that guy is a factor each week uh Marcus mariota this to me is it's worked you probably could have had a lot of guys do what he's done because he has been deactivated for several weeks and then he came in and did live very little and the one game he's been active for when you didn't play your starters in the fourth quarter i don't hold their lack of moving the football against him at all they kind of checked out and put some backups out there with him but i'd say it was a victory in that it seems like he has helped jayden daniels yes just the whole point you wanted a veteran who does some things style of play wise mindset wise like daniels did when he came out and it seems like he's been a good resource for jayden so i'll say that's a win it's a win for me too and as you said i i don't know if you if you subbed him out for any other backup illie right if you if you swapped him with a with the you know someone from the case came to here could then i'd have done the same thing i know this this one's worked so i call it a win i'm just going in alphabetical order the next one i see is brain and mcmanis now mcmanis they sign thinking they'd solve their kicking problem they obviously released him after allegations had come out against him that have since i believe been dropped at least legally i don't know what's going on civilly with that situation he's eligible last i saw to to rejoin a team uh they feel like they've got their kicker in austin cybertow hasn't missed yet german mc nickels when they signed him i thought nothing of it i thought maybe that guy'll make the roster or he'll be a good campbody i did not have three touchdowns in the last two weeks and a pretty banner performance in arisona in a win last week in the office pool yeah what a win what a win i i mean nine teams in the last couple of seasons alone just getting released and picked up and dropped the picked up 12th club that he's signed with at different points what what a win uh tyler octa long snapper i have not heard that guy's name once the perfect seriously yep in fact i'll go one step further i've been in and out of the locker room a bunch both in camp and now in the regular season i wouldn't recognize tyler ought if he was sitting on my lap nobody out there googling okay especially if you're driving be safe what does tyler ought look like describe it right now to yourself does anyone have any idea that's how i like it i like that dude nameless just faceless maybe maybe tyler right has no face maybe he's like a smart like a like a blurred out witness protection face maybe i'll keep it that way in my mind where he just snaps it perfectly to tressway once a game and snaps it to the uh to tressway for holding field goals or extra points seven times again everyone knew it camera and chiseman looked like last year i saw the chiseman's the fifth time fox zoomed in on him on the sideline trying to get you know together with tressway to talk about the snap and the hold you saw him every week this is the holder he's cam chiseman he played at michigan did you know by the way they traded up for him i don't think they said that but they should have said but you knew what he looked like well really that i don't know what tyler ought looks like james pare did not make the team i mean that was a nothing burger whatever uh antony pittman got hurt would have been a really good player on special teams has helped uh when he's been on the field a bobby wagner hey it may be even a plus i'm gonna put a for bobby wagner to just just a tier below narrowly but a little bit below the ones like echler beyadish luva even allegretti who have been fantastic but you're right wagner might deserve to be in that group because i think for the most part week one notwithstanding when i thought he didn't quite look comfortable or up to speed or whatever i think the last few weeks he has been all over the place yeah there's a complete wrecking ball the reason i could go up to an a plus is those six tfl's it's not just tackling because he's in the middle of the field you know washing it's had you know nubby linebackers that they've paid no money to that have led the team in tackles it's not just that it's the six tackles for loss three quarterback hits blunts a little bit meets at the quarterback frankie luva michael walker has played special teams they've been great on special teams so that's a win man it's a pretty bad analysis to say he's the reason why but i mean he assigned him for nothing he brought him into play teams he's played teams and they've been good so we'll give it a victory and then how about alamadeza kias who caught 10 balls last year he had a six catch game last week just by itself in washington had a huge catch this but past week is only grabbed set up a fourth in a couple on a really nice move that he made but he's already surpassed his production from fillet a year ago yep that's a win another one a guy that they thought would be able to have a larger role for them return in punts at times two it's not as if he's been unbelievable in that regard but still a steadying force back there the reason i wanted to do the exercise that way is you kind of get the picture don't you yep adam peters has been incredible in this year one off season now becoming a regular season with the production that they're getting out of the players he brought in but that sets up this conversation i want to have on the mgm national harbor listener line eight hundred six three six one oh six seven eight hundred six three six one oh six seven who has been their best free agent addition so far this season who do you think has made the biggest impact had the most important role maybe is most influential in their four-in-one record right now because i think there's options their offense is the reason they keep winning and echler has been one of the best players on their offense but he didn't miss a game and they didn't miss him in the game that he missed you could say luvus one of the first guys that comes to mind for me but i thought the first couple of weeks when they were bad defensively well he had some plays it wasn't like he was great you could say wagner from a cultural standpoint i think that would make a little bit of sense to bia dish is in the discussion maybe i look ready it's been on and off the field with injuries more so than bia dish who has more responsibility up front anyway that's the short list is there anyone else that should be thrown into the finalist category yeah i mean you you mentioned the the heavy hitters right the two line backers wagner and luvus backeler certainly well on offense even though you mentioned it the game i thought they would struggle to score i said let's struggle to score without him this court 42 so yeah i think those are are the main guys i mean you can add in igman agony just because of how weak that position is you know maybe another name or two but i think those are kind of your heavy hitters all right so that's the question we'll hit the calls on this next and we'll both give you our answer at 800 six three six one oh six seven in what seems like it was a pretty masterful free agent class by peters and company smart as we thought at the time veterans short contracts set yourself up to spend big on long-term answers next year bringing some guys in to help change the culture now that you've seen five games and we're about a third of the way through this season which free agent has made the most positive biggest impact that's next on grant and any other we're at capital one arena head of the caps 50 event on grant and danny on the fan the question we're asking you we just went player by player through adam peters first pre-agent a free agent class coming to washington who has been the most helpful impactful free agent that they have signed through five games austin echo is my favorite i love that signing i was so excited about it so bullish on it he's outstanding he is so good with the ball in his hands but it's taylor bjarish this offensive line was a question mark it is not now and i think he is at the absolute center of it that's a terrible pun and i apologize because he's the center but that's the deal he has solidified that group with a rookie quarterback to stabilize uh you know and deal with all the different things you know they're going to throw at you they're going to try to complicate and do all the different sort of zone blitzes and confusing things and and all the different stunts and games he is not only held fast in terms of communication get everybody on the same page they've blocked really well but he's also been mauling people i feel like that guy is a huge unheralded reason as to why this offense is kicking all sorts of ass and keeping a list of names yeah it's really impressive when you look at bjarish 185 snaps as a pass blocker on dropbacks and just one pressure on a hurry so far this year amazing i was going to say bjarish you did so i'm not going to double up i will go a different direction i'll tell you who in a second but before we leave the offensive line we should also point this out about adam peters yes they signed players from outside the building that have been a helpful they also made some really important other decisions on the offensive line in another position one hundred percent man and i'm not talking about the draft and Brandon Coleman i'm talking about Cornelius Lucas yeah we should theoretically count because they decided to bring him back they watched the film and said we'll start this guy we won't sign someone else we'll find our guy in the draft we won't take one in the first round we can get one in the second round we won't take one in the second round we can get one in the third round but you know you still have Cornelius Lucas as your starter right they were right about that too yep Cornelius Lucas on 111 dropbacks as a pass blocker has allowed four pressures all on hurries no hits of the quarterback so far this season so i just want to point that out as well i will go with frankie louvoo because i think there is some non-analytic stuff on louvoo that's huge you see him breaking the team down in the huddle kind of replacing john allen almost in that way where he is the guy that is like most responsible for getting everyone fired up pre-snap i think that's a big deal yep but also the way he plays he is what they talked about in the joeyt opening presser the arriving violently and all that anybody anytime anywhere shtick that i don't really care about but if you you know put your body in the car crash 60 times and you're in the NFL it means something to you he is that dude man he is an absolute beast i love frankie louvoo he throws his body around with reckless abandon and he's been really since the first week or two i think he's been one of the better players at his position in the league so i'll go frankie louvoo yeah he's been instrumental so to me defense you know at various points it's been different things in the NFL and at one time it was about you know limiting mistakes and playing responsibly and keeping everything in front of you and i guess it's still that right now to a degree it's kind of come back in cycles but to me the most important thing about a defense is the negative play finding something to disrupt sometimes that can just lead to an incompletion sometimes it can be like this you know a holding penalty that never gets that uh you know the plane ever gets off the ground or forcing a false start or you know knife it through for that tackle for loss or batting a pastime that might have gone for something big he is everywhere all the time he is disruptive that disruptive figure is the thing i crave even if it means that you know every once in a while you know he's going to swing a miss because he over pursued and went too fast and then somebody you know kind of gets him i will take that because of the disruption he provides he's been outstanding let's go to nick who's waiting in rich men he called the mgm national harbor listener lines nick which free agents have helped them the most hello gentlemen thanks second my car you got it buddy uh although the offense have been outstanding i'm kind of with you i was leaning more towards lubu or even wagner and i'm leaning more towards wagner i think he is the general he's the presence he's the future nfl hall of famer and uh although lubu's out there running around spearheading guys i think wagner's leading the troops appreciate training and just getting them together yeah you know what we can't underscore enough the stuff you don't see on sundays from one to four you know if you're been standing out there on the beat in the locker room that you notice if you're at the practice facility and seeing some of the things he's doing that matter that's bobby wagner's calling card that's kind of why they brought him in here we see the way that he plays yeah he's playing at a high level he mentioned the austin's plural we are sleeping a little bit on cybert because he was signed in season on the waiver wire but it ain't nothing now i am a little more dismissive of him maybe as i should be i hope i don't get called any names in the chat rooms because i'm saying something about the commanders today that isn't that they're going to the super bowler everyone's the mvp but while cybert's been good 12 for 12 and 13 for 13 field goals and extra points he has not kicked a field go longer than 45 at this point he has not been asked to do anything in terms of degree of difficulty that he shouldn't be able to do at a really really high rate as an nfl kicker he's been perfect i give him credit for that he's better than chris bluit and he's better than kid york that doesn't get you very far though so yes he's been awesome but i am just not throwing the party for him yet i'm not writing in sharpie that he will be their kicker in a year or two like i felt about hopkins or ganoe or these other guys that i pretty quickly said oh they got the leg they got the accuracy that's a franchise kicker i got to see him do something beyond chip shots and the offense has been so good he hasn't had to yet but it will take still some kicks of 50 plus before i break out my pen yeah it's interesting right because for me and i made it up that my update my file on this because as i said i saw this past week in a college kicker i can't remember which game i was watching hit a 59 yarder i'm going okay i guess it's it's everywhere now right the kickers are incredible but for me i just want my special teams most specifically the kicking and punting game just don't screw us right just don't ruin everything first just don't give up the back breaking play just don't do anything crazy don't do what seattle did never kick blocked it goes for a touchdown and now you lose all i want really are my easily makeable kicks easily made i still treat that that north of 50 yarder is kind of the bonus and i probably shouldn't it should be it's more main stream now than it's ever been but this is what i'm looking for i will the other stuff like don't kick it out of bounds and give the other team the ball to 40 make the 45 yarders and in please do that every time you do that you're going to be fine just fine by me but you're right it's it's a five-game sample i have done this five-game sample a million times uh where we've decided that kai forbeth is the guy or nick novex the guy or name that guy that wasn't the guy that we thought was the guy oh oh wait a squeeze in brian in austin texas was listening on the odyssey app brian we're up against it so be quick what do you got but hey brian real quick but number one uh all connectler number two all some cyber cali one of the game but every time we go for a field though you're not cringing so i'm with it thanks buddy he's all in on the austin's on the free agent additions austin two 16 or something just a reminder it's austin 14 for 14 no you go after his next kick just a reminder adam peters peters man bunch of home runs very few swings and misses really handsome he is on a heater erin judge and may kind of stuff from the general manager with the strong jawline grantee danny on the fan ollie cozick's gonna join us on site at this caps 50 event today at 5 30 that'll be cool next a lot of people are trying to suggest that the commanders in the ravens are a rivalry someone's gonna have to explain that one to me we're g&d we may be excited for the start of the football season remember though we all know folks around us that may have lost a friend or family member recently as the exclusive sponsor of the show the law firm kandorian marad will guide you through the difficult probate administration process they'll help bring clarity and closure to a night's game here at the arena we'll give those away in one hour but danny speaking of here at the arena we're here for caps 50 i am fired up to talk to ollie 70 plus former players coming back tonight the entire roster will be on hand that is named man it's uh it's a nice little soft opening right for the the main event this coming saturday uh they take on josh harris's new jersey devils to get the campaign underway man the the countdown for obi walking down gradskis on i remember asking harris though in the pre-season you did a press conference at the home game yep i head up the final exhibition game of the year and i asked him about owning the you know team and the nba with the Sixers now football with the commanders and the nhl with the devils and the differences and he made it pretty clear he goes look i'm very hands-on and involved in the nba and in the nfl the nhl i kind of get reports and the way he described it was basketball and football i'm going to be at the games i'm sitting courtside i'm in the booth i'm talking to the coaches we're doing the same hocky i like owning sports teams and it's one of sports teams yeah i like the devils too i love that honesty by the way i like to the i know this sounds trivial and small i know i know i have other stuff to talk about but i admire the high i'm i'm more successful than everybody here and anybody that's watching me i'm more successful than by virtue of my billions and the things that i own and i'm in charge of but i'm here to tell you there's things i don't know i know the i don't know what i don't know and i'm not going to walk in and be like here's how we like if i own the hockey team tomorrow like if i strike it beyond rich because i invent something so cool you don't even know about and it's like it's now danny ruea owns the capitals i don't know the first thing i know of he's good but how do you build a hockey team how do you run an organization i love i love the fact that he he's willing to admit that because there are a lot of billionaires that wouldn't i know we're on the speaker in the concourse and everyone can hear us right now and they're looking at us like why are these guys but i am going to say this anyway have you noticed if not i'll tap you the next time he walks by there's this guy that's walked by us like three times who looks exactly like he's related to josh brolin have you seen this guy no i haven't i haven't seen James brolin he just walked right past us and i'm telling you we made eye contact again and i wanted to stop him like he knows that you know he looks like josh brolin exactly to me it's like josh brolin's brother i'm gonna you don't need me to tap you because if you see him well now i'm looking for it oh that's the guy is that him oh it's toby but i will let you know when i see him again that mr brolin is making the rounds walking the concourse they've just opened the doors it looks like because i see some people streaming in and their caps gear their caps sweaters they've gotten all of the merchandise now open the stands and all of the concourse food options available to people have just come open in the last few minutes so caps 50 getting underway here at capital one arena i wanted to talk about commander's ravens because i keep hearing this idea that it's a rivalry and someone needs to explain that to me we used to do the show segment regularly someone explained to me yep something you didn't understand and someone could dumb it down to your level right i need someone to do that this is not a rivalry i'm sorry i get the geography of dc in baltimore in the case of the orials and the nationals it kind of is because they play every year there's a history of them playing games against one another right the orials and the nationals have a history of an owner not wanting the other team to exist so you could tell me there's some animus some bad blood there whatever the ravens and the red skins slash football team slash commanders they play once every four years they are in completely different conferences they have almost nothing to do with one another this is not that this is the opposite of what a rivalry is the next time you play baltimore will be twenty twenty four think about that okay the time after that that you play baltimore will be twenty twenty eight they played in two thousand they played in two thousand four joe gibbs they played in two thousand eight jim zorn they played in twenty twelve shanahan they played in twenty six grooden they just play after every coaching change no head coach here has ever taken on the ratings never played twice think about this i mean you you just i want someone to do their best at eight hundred six three six one oh six seven but i think you're gonna have a hard time convincing me this is a rivalry i'll never convince you what you'd have to do is flip that one little switch flip the second one then move about six feet to your right flip that switch flip the other one that's the lock on the window to the press box slide it open take off that nice set of dress wear and hop on down with the common folk you got to get in here and rub elbows with the unwashed masses with the rest of the peasants down here on the level where we're not above all of this is not a press box pulse and take it is 100 percent of press box pulse attack in one way this you can't you can't get to the idea you're someone that thinks like the the rivalry with the then reds kids and cowboys really wasn't that big of a deal no i'm sure get out of here you've downplayed that for years i know i have not because the because the players don't care about it anymore i think ironically the rivalry is not that big of a deal the point i the point here is this is not a traditional rivalry because i believe this is losing strictest of definitions rivalries come from on field or on ice for example everyone knows caps panglets is a rivalry that's a good rivalry they play they butt heads stay their dislike for each other then extends to the fans penguins fans the most annoying ever you just said something so important danny they play they actually play games and not like the olympics the ravens and the commanders play every time there's an olympics well every four years with the olympics we've got some rivalries too don't wait there's some other countries that we have some rivalries with over the course of the years because there's things that that going to beyond just what happens on field so the truest rivalry is a division rival i think washington dallas think philadelphia new york etc that's a normal thing this is a fan rivalry though because you mentioned it this is one of the strangest fan relationships the dc baltimore region in the country there are other places where there are multiple teams within you know similar mileage distance right where yankee stadium is to where the meds play where uh ochle and used to play to san francisco or you know multiple teams in l_a_ etc they're similar things but not like this where when baltimore doesn't have a team at a given sport i know of orials and ravens fans that are die-hard capital fans they love the caps right the baltimore capitals even even some still care about the bullets my uh my wife's grandmother we were the first thing we bonded over was watching phil sineer steve buckhants uh call wizards games right she's she called them the bullets and loved them and we bonded over that so there's this weird relationship where it's all these carvouts where your neighbor is a then redskins fan and orials fan or they like the orials but didn't care for the ravens they followed the colts to the napples it's this weird thing where i know you always say like i don't really see it i didn't really get across my radar uh it's it's washing the fans always claim it's uh one-sided baltimore hates us that's the thing and them hating us caused you to behave one of two ways you dismiss you don't care about it or you kind of hate them back and that's what this is so it's not a strict rivalry from a they play every year twice a year it's a the fans right across the street in hannah rondo county right if i if you go east to where we used to broadcast in lana you go five minutes north it's like ravens broadcast territory you go two minutes east they're listening to washington d_c radio they're mad that everything's purples advanced i think that's at the exporting goods it's a fan rivalry yeah it is a fan rivalry so are the packers and the commanders when they play the fans talk trash to each other on twitter like yeah fans don't like other fans of other teams that that's how it works but i i cannot do a rivalry if i play every four years i i'm sorry i i cannot wrap my head around that and the baltimore washington thing i agree with you wholeheartedly is a completely unique back and forth i don't even know what to call it i don't mean that the two teams the redskins slash commanders and the ravens i mean the cities right you act like it's one sided in the baltimore hates d_c i think d_c_ condescends the baltimore pretty constantly i hear lots of people doing the baltimore accents and making a lot of jokes i guess that's supposed to be just dismissed outright i think it's okay it's healthy it's kind of fun like we're in d_c we have a pretty good thing going here it's okay every now and then to elbow the baltimore people in the ribs a little bit and they i think because we're big brother essentially in the mid-atlanic in this region look up at us with some consternation and don't like us as much i think that's fair i just acknowledge that it goes both ways a lot of people aren't willing to do that having said that i think that's a good argument you made that's about as good as anyone's gonna do right it's because it is not yours like when you you get yourself in a little box sometimes and in this box that you go i know what a rivalry is teams that play twice a year don't like each other and it spills in a different and i'm saying if you lose the definition and i'm admitting you have to loosen the definition to get what i'm arguing for yeah then it makes sense but like 49ers packers could be a rivalry yeah like like twice a year they don't even play once a year but they might that they occasionally play more than just quite literally when's the next time they're gonna play if you don't go to Baltimore this sunday the next chance you're gonna get to see your team in Baltimore is in eight years i'll probably be dead most of us will be okay like bengals chiefs is a rivalry even though they're not in the same division they play in the post-season and the rhetoric got hot mayors are betting on stuff and people are calling each other names and it and it escalated now they're both really good so that one got kick started but you would never think of that as a historical rivalry by any stretch of imagination you know but it just stuff happens this is really to me about the fan bases and when when i go see my father-in-law in the greater Frederick area literally it's one side of the street it's purple this can't you know purple zubaz ravens flags uh agrall and po quotes on the other side it's no it's all washington like there's not much that's like that whereas typically now there's gonna be exceptions i was everywhere but if you're in the bay area you drive in Oakland it's Oakland you drive across the bridge it's San Francisco this is a pretty good dividing line here there are no lines it's this weird muddled uh like like a kid that's never seen a maze before trying to uh trying to solve it it's much scribbles do you think of the Raiders and the 49ers as a rivalry there's no chance hmm no that's exactly my point they never play how could it possibly be a rivalry well they're just two random teams had they had they been in Oakland the whole time then then maybe more so they've been in Oakland for a long damn time and Oakland and LA and Vegas and back to Oakland and I mean every time how Davis sneeze they move I mean they've been in Oakland since for decades there's a lot of time in Oakland it's not a rivalry because they don't play let's go to Jimmy and you know what before we get to the phones i'm sorry Jimmy i hate doing why would you do that to Jimmy i shouldn't i want to play that in twin because Jimmy they get to rivalry you wouldn't let him talk you know and i don't know we're gonna get to Jimmy in a second don't you worry about that don't you cut off Jimmy i'm not gonna cut off Jimmy can't even hear Jimmy but Dan Quinn answered this question actually i think that's interesting somebody asked the head coach of the commanders is this a rivalry you know what he had to say you know for me first you know kind of getting here and getting started i didn't naturally think of that coming in because of the division and the history of what the NFC East you know has been so much with the teams that way so that was probably the first thing i thought with rivalries with Washington of the NFC East i think there's always a connection when cities are you know closer by but the fact that we're not in the same division in the same conference you know for me my first you know time play in Baltimore as a commander my first thought was the east first that was Dan Quinn talking about this rivalry rivalry all right now it's Jimmy's turn i told you i would go to Jimmy actually you know what first let's go to no i'm kidding come on Jimmy what's going on buddy how are you hey man don't cut off Jimmy can you already do that did you want me to do that i'm not lorraine about don't touch you whoa dude you don't have to worry about geez i grew up in northern Maryland i'm a raven i live down here in DC or that guy living Springfield or whatever you call it now i work in an office full of commanders fans and you can bet your ass i wore my Ray Lewis jersey work today i wore my 2012 our 2000 Super Bowl champion shit ass and i talked smack because on Monday after we bake your quarterback again and we beat you by 35 points i want to make sure it's clear who has the better football season now does that get under your skin or not yeah that got under myself yeah that was a little gritty wasn't it because it's a fan rivalry it's not you're not the Steelers you're not in our division i don't really care what happens after the game but but you being a ravens fan saying that doesn't make it worse if you were a bangles fan and said that it still would have been annoying but Jimmy's point before you cut him off again i don't know what you're saying but Jimmy's point is this isn't like the one rare time that the bangles fan gets to see the the game he lives and works among washington fans we live in DC i live around everybody i see Steelers fans every day i see Browns fans every day i see this level of concentration kind of i mean i see a couple more Ravens fans not a lot well i mean day to day i see more Cowboys fans than anything yeah i mean because you you know you go from lorton to to the office but like if you if you were in like columbia you you wish you'd see a million like that's that's within your shot that's that's the same distance and that would be annoying to me once every four years when my team played 13 that's been in temple hills what's good what's up with you man hey man hey great and dang i love y'all but y'all is letting the i was raised in Virginia show i was letting that stuff right now i'm gonna i'm gonna just keep it a hundred which i'm gonna tell you it is you can say it's a fan rivalry but it's bigger than that because i'm a i'm a guy that i'm from simple wheels born and raised right there by african most like to ride my bike to do all of it you know i'm saying right there when it comes to Baltimore they do not like this we do not like them now we like they harbor they like our heart that's it you know i'm saying put it for the most part we like casino they like our casino that's it for the most part when it comes to everything else we don't like the way they talk with them like the way they dress they keep trying to claim that they didn't start a new balances and Nike boots all that they they be they be they be reached and we get inside of that we got a quarterback that can finally compete in a team that can finally compete with their teams they have been having over the past 10 20 years so now it's like okay we finally up there which are now y'all they had y'all little fun over the football the past couple 10 20 years or whatever but now it's our time and now we got something to say all that trash i'll be talking about everything else you're going to shut all of that down this sunday when they didn't value it's like what lemah was supposed to be looking like he first came appreciate you dude thank you there's i think again it in the strictest definition i keep coming back to this and i know a lot of people don't care i my argument's not going to hold up in court right like to me a true rivalries michigan oh i have state they play a graphical rival yeah they do want me to acknowledge that you can they play every michigan oh how's that they play every year there is so much on it you get fired if you don't beat the other team for a couple years when it's to that degree it's the the fan base they only care about did you beat oh house did you beat michigan or vice versa like that's a rivalry here's what i would say though this is not that 10 out of 10 rivalries i would rather beat the panthers than the ravens it means so much more in tie-breaking metrics and every way that you'll need wins like if you had to pick one you pick that yeah i would do probably i would rank the ravens win like on a wish list no higher than however many NFC games you have and then it starts next with the AFC games and it probably would be the top of the AFC games because it's Baltimore and it's geographically close but just in another conference in a league where those wins don't mean as much to you where the weighted victory is the NFC victory yeah it's just hard for me again to olympics you know every four years man where were you four years ago there are people who have been married twice since then you know that's a long time between games for these two teams grant and danny with you on the fan ollie cozick is stopping by our setup here in about ten minutes looking forward to talking to ollie the goalie one of the seventy former players with the capitals who's on site tonight that is coming up live as we are at capital one arena caps fans are streaming into the building for the caps 50 event right here on the fan alive from capital one arena headed the caps 50 event as we celebrate 50 years of caps hockey we're granting danny welcoming you back on 106 seven the fan and we are really pleased right now to be joined by a caps legend a former all-star a vesna award winner olloff cozick joins us ollie the goalie is in the house thank you for the time we appreciate it thanks for having me guys you can't go five feet around here like it's been a while since i've been in the concourse so i'm sure people are making up for last time oh it's gonna say are your quads okay a lot of sitting standing nailing bending get your autographs and pictures done they're getting back to the old days love it what an exciting time for this organization as we kick off a brand new year on saturday night but let's start with this event i was telling danny earlier the caps of all the teams in town do the best with this kind of stuff like it's just familial feels like we're all coming back together first time long time 50 years of this organization and over 70 former players are coming back to join all the current players tonight at this event peter bondra has done a phenomenal job in in you're substitating this alumni and it has just grown from year to year and now with this being in the 50th we've had the most turnout that we've ever had for this event i just was downstairs guys i hadn't seen since i played i mean guys uh that played here in the 70s i got to meet for the first time it's it's phenomenal down there and the connection that this organization has with this city i mean is is exemplary right here tonight i think there's going to be over 15 000 people at this event um it's a great way to kick off the 50th anniversary this organization it'll never obviously because it couldn't be never be an original six you know it's ever going to have the same cache as some of the others but it's now mature it feels like right whereas i and i'm ever going to land over maryland to the capital center with you know five thousand my best buddies to to watch an okay team and then they've been good mad everything in between over those years just reflect on it where this organization has come from and where it is now pretty darn healthy place i'd say well somebody was telling me the story about the save the cap drive yeah a couple years after they were here uh-huh and to see where when we when we were in the finals in 2018 to see the the two or three blocks around this arena just filled with red was was crazy and i think a lot of it obviously has to do with the ovi effect i mean ovi came on board and then that that generation of uh players that were here um i think just created such a buzz um with this community and and then obviously culminating with the Stanley Cup championship everybody loves a winner and uh i think this organization just does a great great job of of interacting with the community it is funny to think about that so 50 years feels like such a big number but then you think about ovi and he's essentially been a part of 40 percent of the organization's history as he's embarking on almost two decades now he is as responsible as anybody in organizational history for where we are but what do you make of this era this rock the red in this building this group that makes the playoffs almost annually one cup to show for it but so many years where they're knocking on the door like what do you think this is done for hockey in this city well i think it's done everything the excitement it's generated i mean you come here to watch a game it's an event i mean it's it's boisterous especially when our guys are doing well it's boisterous um you know we get the we get the unleashed the fury you know late in the third period and and um when we're competing when we're competing for first place when we're we're battling and competing in the playoffs it's just such a great time to be here and this this yeah this era of caps hockey is is obviously one of the best that's been in the in 50 years that we've been here remind me like the year you guys made the amazing cup run that nobody really saw come in necessarily back in the you know the end of the 90s into 2000 what's the building like at the beginning of those seasons obviously the city rallies behind a team because it becomes the cool thing to do like what where was the fan base then well it was a little different because we just moved into MCI center and i was in December moving from from US arena yeah and and so just being in a new building obviously uh provides a buzz and an energy and and i think that kind of that kind of um more rubbed off on us as players when the building was full and loud and electric and maybe it wasn't necessarily for the team but for the building but then as the rest of that season when it's sort of flipped okay we know what the building's about but now we've actually got a good hockey team and you know we we channel that that um energy into that nice playoff run that we had it was disappointing though when we played Detroit in the finals where we came back for game three and four and the whole lower bowl was was Detroit Red Wing fans i think that was a little demoralizing for our group but um you know we had yes obviously we would have loved to to win a game and see what we could have done of it made of it but you know that that that Red Wing's French uh team for those two years i mean that probably one of the better teams and they're pretty good yeah loaded with hall of famers only Colesard with this year live cap one arena oh great danny just to your point and so i was in you know high school and and and college and kind of your heyday here in your prime playing for the capitals and i was thinking about what while you were talking there was no such thing as youth hockey around here it was basically like Wayne's world you know like game on game off on the street street hockey style is either at the chevy chase club if you belong there was a rink for DuPont and then maybe like sometimes in cab and john if it was cold enough now there's like youth hockey leagues it's like a travel sport like anywhere else and you're part of building that i would say just that that enthusiasm and excitement it really got kicked and overdrive now with this group but that to me is remarkable i don't know just your thoughts on that well i think that goes hand in hand when you have a successful team and you have some players that that uh you know the the the community loves and you know when you bring your kids to games and then all of a sudden they they see the game and they see an electoral vechkin or they see a you know a braid and hope be or or um peter bondra and they're like i want to play that game and so then they talk to their parents about i how do i get to play hockey and so when you have more and more people like that you know there's a movement and then there was a demand for new arenas so they they built some arenas and then um the minor hockey program started taking off and uh there's definitely a correlation between uh the NHL team and minor hockey if you have a successful program with some star players the kids are usually the ones that that have the you know want the parents to get them playing hockey because they think it's pretty cool it's off season was different for the capitals i mean looking at this group now and you're still a big part of this organization unfortunately there was a lot of money to spend because tjoshi and nicholas backstrum are unavailable and that's you know turning up the page it's sad for a lot of things but the amount of players that were brought in talented veterans that really could help push this thing forward now is substantial for the first time in many many off seasons what do you make of of what pry mcclellan and company were able to do well there's a lot of optimism for sure uh when you get a when you get a guy like du bois um with his skill set and his talent and hope you know that that maybe carbs has the the secret recipe to unlock his potential if if that happens look out i mean we've got a very special hockey player and then uh you know we got manji apani who was a great player in calgary for many years um uh chikron uh defenseman from from autowa again another talented player that you know if we can harness his ability and get the most out of him is just going to be a great counter to uh john carlson i mean john he's getting older too and he maybe can't haul in minutes that he used to and this uh chicker is going to be a great offset for him what about the goaltending situation so chucky last year would ended up being the hot hand they went into the playoffs with lengrin and maybe that happens again this year but they bring in mason tomsen feels like maybe we don't even know who ends up being the guy yet presumably you tell me do you think someone has to take over or could it be a like a timeshare and does that work in today's ending well i i think you're gonna i think you have to have some sort of a time chair it's not like not like the days when i played marty barder played where we played seventy two seventy four games you imagine that seventy two games and now they don't even like golly's go back to back it's no and and and it's not so much from a physical standpoint i mean i i'd like to train like a like a player i was always in really good shape and and and that workload never really affected me i think the thing now is there's so much parity and there's so much importance to win every game because they're it's so close that is more of a mental break um you know having a golly play try to play 72 games and pressure-packed games every night it's it takes a toll where when we were playing we had we had expansion teams that were there and you knew that even on your when you're you had an off night or you weren't playing your best you knew more times than not that you were going to beat that team and that's not taking anything away from it it's just a different different era of hockey now what do you think real quick sardani oh gold tending money i saw um just erkin i think it was turned on 11 and 88 the other day it seems like there's a bubble that could pop at some point right we're just because i know that guy's special and elite but there's only so many of those goalies where a lot of times the team just it's the lingering who ends up being the guy not the contract player that you bring in where we headed do you think in gold tending spending what do you think of that by the way 88 million he said no and do wish you could still play i try to find a way to play it was a million no i think and and and there were no other once carry price it signed his big contract um the market kind of stale and actually kind of went reverse a little bit um so the those 10 million dollar contracts were out there anymore so when he turned that down it actually surprised me a little bit that was going to be the highest highest contract ever given to a goaltender so i i really don't understand the reasoning i mean you got the money you got the term i don't know if he's looking to get more with the with the increase in the salary cap to me that's kind of counterproductive because you could use some of that money to bring in better players to help your team become better i so i i don't know but i think in his case he's the he's the star guy and uh you know he's uh he was drafted by the rangers he was developed by the rangers so he's a ranger through and through where sometimes when you bring in these uh guys from other organizations they're not quite as comfortable you know what i mean like there there has to be sort of a comfort level um for goalies to really play their best you saw that with bibrowski the first few years in florida when he went down there you know they were really kicking themselves for signing with that contract and then obviously he uh in the last two years especially this last year when the Stanley Cup it was all worth it when we talk about some of the new players on this roster it's exciting how long does it take and there's no right answers no one formulaic thing here only but how long does it take do you think for everybody to kind of have it be second nature right where you can go through training camp you got to go through good bad and everything in between where when you throw that pass you know that someone's going to be on the other end of it or those anticipation timing plays etc how long is it take before everybody is on the same page in second nature it's probably a good 20-30 games i mean we've we've had to deal with that a lot in Hershey the last few years and i know Todd Nelson's biggest thing is like this isn't going to be a team until about 30 30 games in and that's just getting to know guys getting to know different personalities like you said getting nowhere what the trend is for a line mate what your partner's going to do um you know from a goal to understand a point of view what what your debarring is going to do um so there's a big adjustment and it's usually 20-30 before before there's really strong chemistry there's a there's a goal score of some renown named Wayne Gretzky he's at the top there's a guy that plays here that's 41 shy hey i still can't believe that because i saw Gretzky i can't believe anybody's close and yet here we are just quantify that for us how incredible it is and just and what you make of it so three years ago i knew i mean obviously i knew ovie was one of the best goal scorers ever but i had no idea how close he was to Gretzky's record because i didn't even really put him in the same category i think the stuff that Gretzky achieved it just you never thought was ever going to be broken i think the guy had more assists and the next guy had total points yeah like it's just they're off the chart stats and so when it came to light that ovie was 180 goals away you're like okay that's still 180 goals but man is he close and then to think he's 42 and he could possibly do it this year it is unless people play the game i mean you just have no idea how special that is especially with the way the goal tenders play now um how tight teams play defensively um it's it's incredible like he is legitimately that he will be the all-time best goal score whether he breaks the record or not in my opinion with all the variables the goal tenders now he will be the all-time best goal score ever what it's going to do for this organization also i can't wait for i feel like it's going to be 98 home run chase of my childhood kind of attention as he gets closer when the countdown's really on and he's ten away nine away networks cutting into games kind of stuff i really think it's going to be on that level it could be well i think it's going to take it to the other level too what it's going to do for the nhl product i mean what what the nhl's done in the last five years is phenomenal like we are we're right almost on par with the other three big dogs maybe not football but basketball and and and mlb i mean it's they've done such a good job promoting this this game and and then you have something like this happen uh uh a once in a generation player that's going to break maybe one of the unbreakable records you know it's it's i think it's going to it's going to be an exciting time obviously in dc but i think for the nhl in general oh this is treatment thanks for stopping by and hanging out i appreciate it guys thank you buddy it was good talking right to me back up thank you holy colesic ladies and gentlemen one of the cap's greats of all time seventy former players in the house this evening with all of the current capitals it's the cap's fifty event we're taking you up to six thirty on your flagship home for caps hockey all season long one oh six seven the fan welcome back to grant and danny live on the fan we are at capital one arena it is already hopping in here we just had only colesic stopped by that's only the goalie man good catching up with him the caps fifty event is underway third i blind is playing to make this whole night sing literally and figuratively at the end of the evening so that'll be a lot of fun the stage looks awesome yes it does because you know i've been in indoor concerts before but you can get right up on it it's pretty close proximity i think they said there's going to be close to fifteen thousand people coming out here tonight caps fans are good at being fans they like it yeah they if you put capitals on it and they say you say we're doing something they'll post they'll probably worth something rad but this is what we were talking about with holy this is what they're trying to cultivate i think with the commanders right now the wizards have their work cut out from that's a whole nother story but you certainly have some of this with the nats because of our recent championship the capital's fan base is extremely passionate and they deliver like night and a night out they come they all wear the same thing that they're supposed to wear the opposing fans don't take over the building and they show up and you say well why is it that way for the capitals what i think it's that they've been really good for almost twenty years like if you do over and over again on the product then the fans say we'll take we'll get your back and for pretty much every single season barring a couple over the last sixteen or so years they've been a playoff team with a chance to win a championship you've given me a lot of great memories a lot of joy i turn on the tv i choose your product i pay money to come to games and way more often than not i have a good time i'm rewarded that's what it is it's it's the the investment right i mean the reason i will never go to nubs field again is because when i didn't have any money i spent a lot of it and i had the worst time i've ever had i don't do that again i'm not signing up for that again whereas when i buy caps ticket i've had a great shooting percentage i've had an awesome time for the most part even if you been watching some losses even sometimes when they came in second or the stupid rangers one or or Pittsburgh one or a playoff disappointment most of the time i have a great event when i come here and that's kind of the thing that's how you give people to come back even even you know with quote-unquote playoff disappointments or some of the things that happen over the years it's a great product to your point and when you do that people give you some brand loyalty and that's what's happened yeah but it's just a good time it's funny you think you're coming out here for a game and it's gonna be awesome but even an event like this like people are just excited i think that it's a new year that it's a new season you know that fans are back and kind of in the flow of just putting on their sweater getting together again go into the arena cheering like to me that is the whole point and that's what we're seeing today is just happy to be back that's what it is right i mean everybody's in such a good mood everyone's in such good spirits it's like it's like the first day of school but it's not for school it's like the first day of a happy thing it's like i'm just i'm oh there's the guy that sits close to me i know this person from you know uh the partial season ticket plan we've had like everybody's just so happy around such a good mood man it's it's it's uh contagious caps hockey gets underway on saturday night at capital one arena they're playing the new jersey doubles tonight's the caps 50 event we are here throughout the evening tobi all-tizers live when we are done he will be on site out here at capital one arena you can get tickets for 19 dollars and 74 cents because they were found that in 1874 pretty cool deal boom get in for less than 20 bucks you get a show they got the food going and everything in stadium like a normal game night uh very very cool good experience i also think the buy-in of having 70 former players here that's incredible by the way man like the and to wash it in commander's credit like we see they're they're getting there with their homecoming events i think they had it's different because you have 53 players at a time but they had almost 100 players last year of the year before with this new regime trying to reach out to guys lining the sideline coming out being honored i just think that speaks to how you treat your players and then wanting to be a part of something yeah and it's important for for guys and it's like i've sampled you know and talked to every single former player of all the different teams but in general i would say the the pulse that we have gotten is i just don't want to feel like i'm being used like it always felt to me that's niner and company when it's like we got some bad PR quick trot out of legend you know what i mean people are upset at us let's see if they're all greens available to come and stand in front of us and no one gets mad at they're all green let's see if we can find someone else that was good at some point to sort of dredge up good feelings from the past and guys get wary of that they get tired of being trot it out there without much benefit to them they need to know they need they need to be events where you know it has come to do anything you just you show up and have a great time with some of your buddies that you shared you know the battlefield with or shared uh you know the ice width or the football game with whatever you need to treat people really well you start doing that then it's like okay hey here's an ask can you come back for this party with third i've lied and then they say yes like if you feel part of it you're willing to do it Thursday night football tonight at 8 15 east time here on the Fandy San Francisco 49ers the Seattle Seahawks and NFC West matchup a Seattle win and they're actually sitting pretty four two men they would have the tiebreaker for now over San Francisco they would have a two game cushion over the Niners who are not completely healthy it would be a signature win early for them with their loan losses to Detroit tough game against a good team yep then a bad loss to the Giants but that would be really their only bad loss of the season Chino Smith is leading the NFL in passing yards they're a top 10 offense they're all of us good here's what i like about Seattle with moving on now from Pete Carroll they have joined the 2020s they throw the ball they use their receiving talent they spread you out they brought in a play call or an coordinator from the University of Washington that was on the staff with Michael Pennix last year that up tempo pass first free receiver offense thought it was a really good higher and grub he's done a really good job so far but they're not majoring in running the football they're minoring in it they're basically spreading you out and throwing it and then mixing in the run i just think it's it looks like the 2020s now and they've got a quarterback who's undervalued and nobody talks enough about in Chino Smith who's pulling the trigger yeah they have a really excellent set of ingredients for an offense right as good a deep better you're gonna find a DK Metcalf as good an intermediate possession guys you're gonna find in Jackson Smith and Jigwin then you know a good third option that maybe a step slower than he was a couple years ago but still pretty damn proficient in in lock it Kenneth Walker's a badass out of the backfield too he is tough physical running a five and a half a pop and you know Zach Charbonnet is a good you know change a pace in that regard so there are really good ingredients on this offense right and that's had been their problem is is moving the football in general i mean they i wouldn't have 500 some odd yards of offense against against Detroit in a loss so they can move it and they could score great and Danny on the fan we've got parts of a couple of really good conversations we had on the show today we want to react to and play for you next including Brian Baldinger who helped us preview commanders Ravens outstanding breakdown of what Washington's done well from him and Luke McCaffrey gave us a surprise phone call off the practice field as well what did he have to say about the prep the team's doing for Baltimore we'll get into that as we continue from Capital One Arena head of caps 50 tonight on G&D on the fan as was the case with the local defense at the beginning of the year there are times in life when we see our loved ones struggle especially as they get older the exclusive sponsor of our shows here to help the law firm Kondorian Murad that will guide you through the process of managing a health care financial power of attorney even security guardianship if need be for a family member schedule a free consultation with their elder law and estate planning attorneys today do that at kmloyers.com be sure to tell them G&D sent you that's kmloyers.com we are at Capital One Arena head of the caps 50 event tonight 50 years of capital sake fan streaming in they're going to have 15,000 people here and the bulk of them are already here a guy just walked by and said left hand up and pointed right at Danny Ryu yet yep and that's fine he can put your hand wherever he wants I guess not wherever he wants to go outside are you sure he can put his hand I'll take some of that back there's a lot of places you can put your hand that are fine the unethical ones we all know where you're not supposed to put your hand but it's I'm getting off of a weird term speaking of putting your hands where you're not supposed to put your hands so anybody who wants any of these schedules feel free to grab one so we had a bunch of pucks this was an amazing occurrence it was it was something so uh we're out of pucks by the way we've got these awesome rubber little pucks that uh we have up on the table here they're kind of like a squishy device for sure a little squishy ball but they say 1067 the fan a great job by our staff setting up a beautiful table for us very appealing looking people were coming up and grabbing the pucks now we needed another like 300 of them but we can do that next time right we were already out of the pucks also people were signing up for caps tickets I think we're out of paper for that as well so well next time we'll do 500 more of everything yeah okay right but the point of the dude's story is if you want schedules come on so we've got all this stuff on the tables people are coming up and grabbing it that's what they're supposed to do that's what they're there that's why they're here that's why we're here as an aside I'm sitting at the table and I have my drink and I had my popcorn right next to me you sure did a lady came up and just went right into the popcorn now now respectfully now what am I supposed to do I didn't say anything to her I just kind of looked at you danny stared right at me and was like that just happened what are you going to do now now and the answer was I'm not going to do anything it's mid conversation I'm not sure what we're talking about what we're doing that's another point we were on air at the time we're in the middle of a sentence now this young lady uh was what you didn't see I don't think is she approached from several strides away walking towards him she had a mask on yes she looked at the popcorn and pointed at it and no one did anything okay so she she was pointing at different things on the table she was talking like can I have the puck and someone's like yeah can I have the schedule we can't hear because we're gonna we're doing this can I have Grant's lunch and someone was supposed to say no well people can't figure out I think a lot of times I understand you're not really useful like there's sound in our ears our ears are covered we can't really hear you so when you're like I don't know what that is I got the whole radio show going I was pregnant that was broadcasting you there's a few thousand folks that are interested hopefully what we're trying to do ideally so she approaches no one stops her she points at the popcorn and I don't know if she thinks she got an acknowledgement for you or not I don't know I think after a little while of no acknowledgement she just decided the popcorn's up for so she looks like I'd like to be clear about something the popcorn was right next to me oh I know where it was buddy the popcorn the pucks are at the front of the table she had to put her the schedules are at the front of the table so if you're watching on the youtube feed I would she had to press up against the table because to reach across would have been from a normal distance is too far she had to touch the table with the right hip reach that right hand go go gadget arm all the way across and does the the the the excavator dig down yeah break back towards the side left hand snaps the mask off does the full that's the thing giant crunch and mask protecting her from I guess the air in the arena sure I'm but she was wearing a mask she moves the mask and goes in with the popcorn all one motion again I'm I agree with everyone I disagree with everyone I'm supposed to disagree with whatever you think is the right thing on your side just so everybody know I will tell you if germs are the issue you didn't avoid any by sticking your hand in that popcorn in a mystery that's what I have a bucket of popcorn again I so here's my question what am I supposed to say I think if anybody need I don't want to like scaring people away now the table anybody who needs schedules there for you come on up and get a schedule but for example don't take my water bottle but like you said this is off limits like this is my person I've been drinking from this there's backwash in here schedules up for but she goes puck purse no problem the regular folks no problem third puck nobody's looking no problem so this has been a where is grants popcorn let's just this is mashed potatoes and scary movie like my germs you know like right in there so this is a pretty great deck oh look that's that's my special popcorn it's been a lot of fun I'm not kidding you conservative there have been thousands of people that have passed by us over the course of today let's let's say for the sake of argument there are three thousand people that have passed in front of our eyes today was that a fair number there's a lot of people I don't know what the number is i would i would take the over call for what what number do you want to put it put you you put a number down hundred thousand a hundred thousand people have come by today probably not but i love you let's say there were five thousand people four thousand nine hundred ninety nine got the distinction between giveaway pocket paper schedule you would like and personal effects and beverages and active food items of great and danny the clue here the clue is an addition of me being fat and it being food the clue here is blue schedules and pucks near the people walking by popcorn next to me at the back of the table so in here my so i wonder i saw her by the way pointing at the popcorn and i i just thought it would be too awkward to look up and be like no no no not the popcorn yeah i just thought if no one said anything eventually and she just kind of kept pointing at it like popcorn well because we're pros you can't i'm on the air like what am i supposed to say you can't stop the show like we're interviewing like brian balding or like baldy hold on no you can't have my popcorn now like you can't do that so what happened was she grabs the popcorn now i i right away i did not have the stones to do anything about it what what am i going to do anyway so i i just kind of didn't react i noticed it i'm like no one else is going to notice that she ate the popcorn danny immediately like hits me and you are like oh my god i'm like you're pointing like she ate your popcorn i'm like yeah what the hell you want me to do about it so after she walks away and when she's out of reach of being able to see i take the popcorn and i hide it under the tape yeah and it was it and again you're my guy but that was a tale between your legs just grab it kind of put it down i was just it was like eor had to move his popcorn it was sad i felt for you but you know who was comfortable was that lady extreme i wonder i like i like i wonder if she was like if i could carry this laptop around i would just take it like is that is that free too right it is on the table it's on the table where there are hey do you have a charge cord can i just have it my phone's low on juice you want this cord she sees myself i'm like hey the cell phone's on the table it's free now it's up for grabs so here's my question but bless your confidence can you imagine being that comfortable anywhere at any time to say there's a bucket of popcorn from a stranger let me get this right hand in there and see what happens so do you think one of two things is true about what happened uh-huh either she thought it was a community bucket of popcorn in which case what why would there be like in what or by the way she's wearing a mask in 2024 hold on you would think that she is in some way cognizant of not eating the same bucket of popcorn as everyone else if again i i i'm on i'm on everyone's team but if germs are the concern you let a couple pass the goaltender they didn't you you pulled the goalie on five on five in the first minute of the game there was no reason so let's say okay but i need it i need it yeah i'm sorry did she think that was a community bucket of popcorn it's the Halloween season we're doing an early trunk or treat and you just come on by and scoop some popcorn out of the same bucket everyone else is touching or do you think that she knew that was one of our buckets of popcorn and she's like they're on the air they can't say anything about it i might as well just scoop some popcorn like the the real distinction the real question is like does she know or think that it was your popcorn wait in other words does she going that's grand's popcorn i'll have some or is it community popcorn who else's popcorn would it be it's either one of ours or its community right so which is it what i just asked you yeah does she think it's community community or did she correctly evaluate it was not for grabs and just had it anyway it's got to be community i i i can't but don't you think it's somewhat ironic yeah that someone that's eating the community popcorn is also masked up yeah you would think there's a like a you're not doing the community popcorn you think there's a link there's not a link there's no link there but the the let's say hypothetical it is community popcorn would you ever ever do you just strut on over you know what i need i need a fistful of popcorn it's up the top there it was below the surface you know what i'm saying that popcorn had been eaten there've been some consuming this is the popcorn in question that means you'll notice that very little has been eating since the moment in question so it's basically you like if i'm i've been selecting one at a time around the rim as if yeah that's gonna help somehow that matters well that's hers that's hers that's hers it's all her she put her whole face right in there in other words i want to show you guys that are watching where the popcorn was yeah if i'm level with the popcorn i can't see it like this is where the popcorn no no no that's not true that right that no no that's exaggerate there this is the popcorn no it's an exaggeration i'm gonna show you where it was okay zoodamsan yeah it was far like what almost a quarter instead of left of where you had what you don't know she ate the end of danny's cheeseburger no like people don't know like honestly like we had a little bit of your burger left does she like and she pointed at it that one there yeah is that it's on the table i need a new mac charger do you have one you have a charging block early i have your shoes on grant and danny brian balding or gave us a call commander's ravens on sunday we got his breakdown from his film study on why washington's offense has been so good well it's hard to rookie and call men but you know uh luke is playing out there and there's split reps they split reps last week you know whether it was injury or later i don't know but you know two different guys man the position i mean the big acquisition would be oddish i mean the guys a good player really good player i mean doesn't go to pro bowls or anything but he's a solid player i know the kitty down at duke manny wethers all off season working on his core working on his strength loves the game you know i think he's made alla grettie better cosmies coming on um while he's just so steady i mean it's a good group up front you know and then cook does a good job of chipping with his tight ends they're not great blockers but he's chipping with them he's they they know what they're supposed to do over there so i mean the protection's been good but like you said i mean you go back to week one against hot bowls in that defense and you know i mean it was 37 16 hot bowls are still blitzing them with a minute to go in a game you're still coming after him but he picked the blitz with his with runny and uh you know he's such a fast twitch guy i mean he's the darius myth to be right in front of him and he can make a miss you know i mean it's just uh it's remarkable because i always say that it's about him you know but it's only five weeks now but like he's really really fast but he's never in a hurry and that's a great columnist to have as a quarterback brian baldinger on grant and danny here on the fan baldy what else can you say about what we've seen from daniels to dive into some of the decision making you know one of the things i saw in college that i worried about was he didn't get out of the pocket and throw ever i think there were like eight times or something he threw while scrambling all of last year he's already showing some propensity to leave the pocket to throw which is man that would be a big development in a game changer well he's really coachable i mean you just you know talk to brian kelly at lshu about him when he came uh from arizona state i mean he wasn't a runner at arizona state he added that component to it he watched the alabama game last year and to your point he went to run you know and you go he can survive you know this game against alabama much less do it in the NFL but you know his eyes are up the throat and tear the car and he could have easily just run right there but his eyes are up and he saw him a car and come from the other side of the field and they just launched the bomb you know and so uh he's not just running to run he's running to make a play and if it's not there then he takes off and he's pretty good i mean i've seen him hit probably a couple of times where he probably doesn't need to take that shot probably use to get down a little sooner but you know he's running out of bounds he's sliding he's protecting himself pretty good uh but look he's he he as soon as he breaks the pocket he doesn't leave just to leave i mean he gives he he looks at what he's supposed to look at and then he's looking to buy time and to extend the play and make a play so whatever they'll teach them cliff whatever it is like he's a he's a good student because he's learning but do you mention cliff uh king'sbury offensive coordinator i i wasn't sure to be quite frankly i didn't know what to expect in terms of fit here etc so far you know the choir is singing man it's been unbelievable to watch it seems like they've got something to have an answer for everything it seems like defenses are befuddled as to what to try to take away and it's resulted in nothing being taken away to this point what have you made from that you fit there with king'sbury and daniels well the you know the little note fact about cliff is you know i i get a lot of big 12 games it was outlawed when he was there a bunch coach at texas tech always had 10 new plays on his whiteboard every single week that he was trying out but the the really he always spread teams out even in the big 12 even at texas a&m he spread teams out to running like and they're a very good running football team right now you know echolomice a week miknickel's picks up Brian is really super solid obviously the quarterback is special but you know they're they're a very good running football team they can melt the clock that's a good defensive front they ran the ball up and down the field on them and that's really the hit jewel and then if you just look at the design of the offense because you sort of call plays with the predictability of what defense you're going to get cleveland's a big man coverage team they had their man beaters up um the receivers one raps they come back to tear in the car in the first quarters of 20 yard come back on timing now you don't do that by accident you do you do that by putting in hours and hours of work um and the cars you like he's he's at the top of his route he's separate he's coming back the balls in the air it's right where it's supposed to be like you see that over and over again and that's not easy to run 20 yard comebacks in his sleeve against good corners like denzel ward and martin emerson but they did so they're getting worked on in practice um cliff is a great play call i noticed um i don't know if it was last week or it wasn't last week it was it was probably the week before when they blew out arizona i saw some sideline shots of he his honestly he had the smallest play chart for a long time when he was in arizona texas test it could put it in an index card and now i noticed the play sheet is a lot bigger than it used to be ever and so i i feel like that means the quarterback is digesting a lot and he can handle a lot more and so he's given them a lot more right now probably at the line of scrimmage two three plays called he chooses it like i think he's given them more than i thought i'm i'm doing the game in a couple weeks in chicago i'm anxious to talk to clip before the game just to see if i want to look at his play chart and see if it's pretty advanced for a kid that's gonna probably make him his age started texan was baldy today before he came on he is so fired up about what he sees when he watches the film of how washington's playing and i think the film nerds like him are smitten by the commanders because they're doing so many the little things right and i've got to give dan quinn full credit for this the entire staff full credit for this but it's the hustle plays to recover the fumble because you're chasing down a play alamadizaki is it's how you play away from the ball luke macafery blocking being willing physically the stuff in the wide receiver room that frankly they ran jahan dotson out of here because they didn't think he would do it they were serious about it and their guys are doing it they do care about it and you've added enough of those little things up as the book title said and as the old saying from uh bill wall she's the score will take care of itself and four out of five times it has yeah you do the little things not part time not sometimes not when everybody's watching but you do it because you do it you do it because you're supposed to do it you do it until it becomes habit then once it's habit you you know keep it up and and and then it's like cultural then it's a real thing it's not just a part-time effort it's not just part-time or a few moments when things are good it's not when you've got a 10-point lead in the in the third quarter you do it every time always it's a it's you know it's you know again that road get the the word rather gets thrown around a ton talking about cultural stuff but that's what this is and there's buying at least to this point which has been fun one of the guys that is bought in and talked about that with us today is wide receiver Luke McCaffery he by way of percentages his separation score is the best in football right now at over 81 percent it doesn't catch a ton of balls but he catches the ones thrown his way he joined us to talk about right now just the vibes and how fun everything is or if it's all business yeah i think it's been so cool you know you look all the way back to OTAs and just how how much passion that everybody in this building and everybody on this team has for football it's been a lot of fun to write i don't know if we've been coming to work yet ever since OTAs even when we weren't on a winning streak and so i think it's so fun to just be a part of an environment like that and then you know when that has 60 it reassures your your faith in a way but i i think there was already a level of faith that we built through OTAs of just trusting the process and and having fun every day are you surprised that you guys are four and one right now i yeah i i don't know i i would say surprise i i think we all have just bought an end of the process and and we've really enjoyed coming out and competing every wrap and and i think what's so cool about it is we've seen a lot of growth from OTAs to camp we've seen a lot of growth or growth through you know day one of camp to the end of camp and now week one to uh going into week five six and hopefully we can continue to to get better every week and and just stay intentful on every single wrap every single play and making the most out of every single day. Luke McCaffrey with us here on G&D. Luke big one this weekend the Ravens are are good they've been good uh you know not having the the gang buster season we're used to from them but everyone feels to myself included like it's only a matter of time what kind of challenge do they bring and and you know it's kind of what do you make of them from afar yeah they're a really good football team you know they know how to win i think when you get to the NFL every team's gonna have good players and every team's gonna have you know some level of success and so to have a team with a lot of just competitors a lot of people who who play the game at a high level is there's always a challenge each and every week i think they do a good job of playing as a team which is something you know i i know we take pride of in our building and so i think it'll be a great competitive mashup and it'll be a good good one for us to go out there and compete. Luke you guys have had success on the road uh you're dating back really since week one in Tampa the trip to Cincinnati Danny and I were in the crowd it was unbelievably loud the atmosphere was as good as it's going to be anywhere else Baltimore involved right and Danny actually looked at me right before the game and he's like this is going to go very poorly i won't tell you exactly what he said but he said yeah he said this is going to be the environment was so intimidating you you have a little face wow exactly so but i say that to tell you guys work the bangles offensively then you go to Arizona you do big things are you at a point where you feel like you're comfortable in those environments it's been low penalty counts or is it too early to say that yeah i mean again i think it just comes down to every game's different every game's a different atmosphere i go back to CNC and i think that was just such a an awesome environment that that i think we all fed off of uh you go to Arizona and i i don't know if you can clarify that one as in a way game i think we probably had more fans than them and so when it comes on just having that advantage having that having that atmosphere was cool to see that covered in burgundy and gold and then you know i i think we just got to stay focused on play at a time and just you know communicating and detailing everything we do look i forgot the other day grant reminded me of this i mean i i guess i knew if pressed but i i was reminded of the fact that you still haven't been playing receiver for all that long right this is still relatively new to you and i want to get into that process with you a little bit where you know we the the finer points the nuances that a lot of people can't do you're you know you're picking up obviously really really rapidly how much do you feel you've grown so far and and you know talk about that process of of learning the position on the fly at the highest level there is yes it's been a lot of fun you know i've been playing receiver about a year and a half now and i think i was blessed i have a lot of great people around me when i first switched that that were able to help me whether it was through my my team or whether it was through my family you know guys who are in the receiver room different coaches and then once i got here i i think that just highlighted even more between bobby angrum uh Andre Coleman who's our assistant receiver coach uh you know terry ozie down me then you know with no o brown got here at the end of camp uh i think just from top to bottom it's been really fun to to be around a lot of people with a lot of great experience because at the end of the day experience is going to be the number one way to learn and making mistakes and going full speed and and i think when i when i've been blessed to be around a lot of guys who have a lot of experience it's allowed me to kind of just learn from from the moments that they've had in their career and they've had endless amounts of moments of whether it's growth or whether it's success just a lot of reps at at playing the position at a high level.
