The Rodney has changed locations, he didn't like the lighting inside, and before he sat down, the view behind you Rodney, wow. It brings to mind one of Chris Sim's favorite sayings can't hide money. Yeah that means a lot coming from you Mr. Nine Eakers. Hey, you can get nine acres in West Virginia for a bag of corn and a mule. That's two memes for the price of one to get it started on this Friday edition of PFT Live. Rodney is back, it's dark in Atlanta so we can't see the luxurious background behind him. It'll be daylight by the time we're done. Remember it's just an hour on Fridays and then it's the PFT PM Chris Sim's Unbuttoned PicsPod, but we say hello to Rodney. Welcome back Rodney. You haven't quit yet between you, Michael Hawley and Devin McCordy to three new additions this year. You don't get to piss any of you off to the point where you refuse to come back and you're the last one I'm going to piss off because if I piss you off, you'll come to West Virginia and kick my ass. You couldn't be more right, you're a little scrunal dude, five, ten, 180 pounds, I think I could take you. You know it's funny because we were talking earlier this week about another scruny little five, ten, hundred and eighty pound receiver in Xavier worthy after he got hit on Monday night by Marshawn Latimore like a routine hit at the sideline and he ended up at the wall and Devin McCordy and I wondered what would happen to Xavier worthy if he was playing between 1994 and 2008 and came across number 37 first for the Chargers then for the Patriots. I don't think it would have ended well. Probably a cart would have been called out from the sidelines and said, hey, come get this kid. Okay, I didn't mean to go down that path. We're very big on health and safety. The game is different, Joe was then, I know, I just don't, I don't, I don't think anybody my size because that's basically my size. I don't think anybody my size, but although some have made it, it was a different world back then. It was a different world and the NFL has come a long way since then. So anyway, we move on and we move forward and there was a game last night that was critical for the 49ers after losing three games in the conference to in the division and blowing leads against both the Rams and the Cardinals. They get out to a 16 nothing lead and it's 16, three just before half and then it's 23, three. They score on the first drive, the second half I figure, okay, they don't have to worry. It's over. They don't have to worry about blowing another game and then low of all the San Francisco 49ers tried to blow it makes for an exciting game for us, but I was stunned they let the Seahawks back into it. I was stunned. It came down to a fourth quarter interception, Rodney, the 49ers have got to learn how to finish. I think that's what's going on right now, Mike. They're going through a phase where they're trying to figure out this team. This is a different team. They've had a bunch of injuries. They've incorporated some guys, both on offense and on the defensive side of the ball. And when you when you're a really good football team, there comes a point in time where you kind of just put on cruise control and you think that, okay. We know each other. We can figure this thing out along the way. But they got the quarterback, they got the offensive coordinator and Kyle Shanahan. They still have Debo and those guys. And for me, Mike, I'm not really nervous about the 49ers. I know good teams get lazy at some point times, but they know how to turn it on, turn it off. This is not the same intimidating defense. They got some young guys playing in that secondary, but those young guys, they stepped up and picked off Geno Smith a couple of times. And that was the key. The one at the end, rookie gets across and gets the ball and basically ends it at that point. It wasn't over, but it felt over with that interception. The Seahawks, it felt like had a chance. They get the ball back deep in their own territory, but they're down six. And it kind of felt like Geno Smith was going to do something. Geno Smith has been great this year. He had a couple of interceptions last night, but he had 312 passing yards through the ball 52 times. I'd like to see a little more balance, but the problem is when you're down 16, three balance goes out the window. And it wasn't until really that two minute drive when they ended up with three instead of seven that it felt like the offense woke up. I mean, that was the key. The 49ers just absolutely suffocated the Seahawks offense in the first half while they built that league. And it should have been worse than 16 nothing. The 49ers sputtering in the red zone again, getting three field goals instead of four touchdowns, which would have put the game out of reach before the Seahawks could have had a chance to get back. Right. Look, go ahead. Let's let's not forget about the kickoff return. That's what really sparked the Seattle Seahawks win with, yeah, with that kickoff return for a touchdown. That's when you start to see them get into the game, they started getting excited. The defense started to play a little bit better, but this was really the changing point of the game. I mean, to me to have a play like this, your offense is struggling, your defense is struggling. And then all of a sudden your offense starts to kick in, your defense starts to play a little bit better, but this was the play that really sparked the resurgence of the Seattle Seahawks. Well, and something that I'm curious about, Rodney, is the question of whether or not the kickoff that resulted in the touchdown was supposed to be short or was deliberately short. Matthew Wright is the guy that replaced Jake Moody. He's the guy they signed this weekend might be injured to the point where they have to find another one, because he made a tackle on a kickoff near the end of the game. We assume that you can just automatically put the ball in the end zone and concede the 30. You still have to successfully put the ball into or out of the end zone, because one of the things we heard and coach Dungy's been big on this, and I think this is absolutely true. You're up 23, three in the third quarter. You don't give them an opening by giving them a chance to return the kickoff for a touchdown, kick it out of the end zone. But even when it's late in the game and the 49ers are up multiple scores and the balls in play, I just wonder whether or not they had a kicker who couldn't put it in the end zone. That, as teams study, what other teams do with the kick last night was a classic example of why you kick it out. On one, you give up a long return for a touchdown, and on another, you get your kicker injured. It's easy to say that when we saw it happen. But for the most part, this entire year, it hasn't been a bunch of kickoffs. What has been like two kickoffs return for touchdowns? So for me, you know, I don't mind kicking it in play and just seeing how your special teams, how they kind of run down, how they cover things. So it's, to me, it's not that big of a deal, Mike. Now it looks like the last one was deliberately short because it was recovered at the 12, but they're at 36, 24. I just, I, I, when you're up, multiple scores that late, just don't take any chances for lightning to strike and screw everything up. Make them drive, make them use clock, make them tear up and chew up territory. Play defense. Play defense is improving the way it is offensively. They overcame the injury to Jordan Mason, who it looked like it first, he fell on the ball. And maybe he did. Maybe that's how he injured his shoulder. It wasn't clear what was injured at first, but it was a shoulder injury. He was in the locker room for a while. He came back, tried to play, didn't work. He was on the sidelines in uniform the rest of the game, but this is the 49ers offense. If one guy goes down, in comes another Christian McCaffrey out, Jordan Mason in, Jordan Mason out. He picked Garendo in, he ended up with 99 yards, most of them came on that play that was really the backbreaker when it felt like, hey, there's still a chance here for the Seahawks after they score a touchdown and kick off and they have all three time outs. Hey, we got a chance. We got a shot and then boom, there goes Garendo, but it just shows you how good the 49ers running game is. And it's like it was with Mike Shanahan in Denver. Even though they got a superstar, Christian McCaffrey, you can put anybody in there. You can put anybody in there that's competent running back and they're going to make an impact. Yeah, just for me, it's overall just the commitment to running the football. You know, six different guys were able to touch the football and he's having that success about Jordan Mason. He's been really steady for them. And then this other kid comes in, Isaac comes in and he plays extremely well, but it's Brock Purdy. It's them using Deebo Samuel in the backfield, using him in different ways. And Kyle, you check, he stepped up and made some plays, but for me, I'm going to the other side of the ball. With the Seattle Seahawks, Geno Smith, there's no reason why they should be having 52 attempts, past attempts. And I think they're still trying to figure out who they are on the offensive defense aside the ball. They're trying to figure out their identity, new coaches, some new players. But at the end of the day, this is Geno Smith. This is not Tom Brady. This is not Drew Brees. He should not be throwing a ball 52 times. And even when it was 16 to three or 16 to nothing, the game is still within balance. You don't have to come out and just start slinging a ball all over the place. He was very reckless with the ball, two interceptions. But they just have to, you said it earlier, Mike, they have to find some way where they can balance this offense. And Geno doesn't feel like he has to be the guy that has to do everything but his offense. Yeah, because Kenneth Walker, the third is a very good running back. But when he gets 14 carries for 32 yards, he doesn't get much of a chance to show it. But credit to the 49ers defense for finding a way to handle him because he can't be very good. He gets loose. He can create some damage. I saw him split out wide a lot last night and it was one play where it seemed like a ticky tack illegal shift that took away a long touchdown by DK Metcalf where he was fading out to the left and he never supposedly got set, although it looks like he might have at the very tail end. But Walker used in many, many ways by that Seahawks offense. And hey, Rodney, you know, we still associate, at least I do. You know, Smith with being a bust because the Jets ruined him as they ruined other quarterbacks. But he statistically is doing very well this year, but he's throwing the ball a lot, as you said. And is that really Seahawks football Seahawks football, regardless of whether Pete Carroll and Mike McDonald head coach should be great defense, great running game and complimentary passing that takes advantage of how a great running game can soften up a defense. It's easy to say that, but take on the personality of the head coach, you just can't say just because it's been a certain way for a long time that they should run the ball and play defense that it should continue to be that way. I think, like I said before, they're trying to figure out their identity, they have a new head coach. We have new offensive coordinator, new defensive coordinator. They're trying to figure out the personality of each and every one of these players and they're trying to figure out the players are trying to figure out the personality of the coaches. So, you know, with Gino, you're not going to have success with him throwing a ball 50 times. I agree with you. It should be more in the 25 to 30 time range as far as attempts. But you know, that run game is so important. Of course, that defense and I thought the defense would be a little bit better than what they are. I think upfront, they get pushed around a little bit, but they do have some skills from athleticism in the secondary, but yeah, overall, you can't have Gino, we're throwing a ball 50 times. That's not going to work too many times. What do you think their identity should be or what do you think it will be? I don't know, Mike, and that's the first part of the month of the season. That's, you know, when people don't play in the preseason, you don't really get an idea of, you know, what a team's personality is or what they want to be. And I think they're trying to figure out when you look at Ken of Walker, he has the ability to make plays, but then you start to look sideways at the Seattle Seahawks offensively when Gino Smith is asked to throw the ball 50 times. Like what kind of game plan you think you're going to actually be successful against that front four against Boson, Fred Warner, and the speed that they have on that defensive side of the ball, dropping back, throwing a ball. It doesn't happen. You have to have a level of balance. That's how you beat the San Francisco 49ers. You keep them off balance and you use play action pass, you run the ball, you screens, you just slow down their pass rush and I just didn't see that last night enough. And the Seahawks really have had two different halves of the season so far, the first three games and second three games. They got the Broncos in Bonix's debut, held them to 20 points and one. They got the Patriots week two, held them to 20 in one in overtime. They get the dolphins at a time when they don't have two to talk about low and they're trying to figure out what they're going to be, held them to three. Once then, giving up 42 to the Lions, 29 to the Giants, and 36 last night to the 49ers. They've got some things to do. They've got some things to figure out because next up they go to Atlanta. They have the Bills. They have the Rams and then they have their buy. So from 3 and 0 to 3 and 3, they got to figure it out or it's going to fall apart quickly for them. And waiting until the buy week to figure out identity is probably going to be too long. They need to win at least two of these next three to, I think, be legitimately in position to try to make some noise when we get to January. What do you, what do you like about the Seahawks? I don't, like you said, I don't know enough yet. I like Kenneth Walker the third. I'd like to see him get used more and I'm struggling to get past the whole Geno Smith equals bust thing even as he's in his third year as a starting quarterback and he's earned a contract that he's already outplayed and he was trying maybe to get an adjustment this past offseason and the Seahawks were able to fend that off. They've got great receivers. They've got too many receivers. I think maybe that's one of the reasons why they throw too much. We have assets devoted to DK Medcalf Tyler Lockett. He's the first round pick on Jackson Smith and Jigba last year. We got to get the ball to those guys. It's almost like it's spread out so much. It keeps them from doing one thing really well. They got a lot of talented players. The third line has never been great in Seattle for as long as the Pete Carroll, Mike McDonald, John Schneider group has been around, but I just, I, I would, I like what works and in my mind what works is what we saw in 2012 and 2013. Great running back, great defense, a quarterback who can, can, can kill you if he's given an opportunity and that's how you put together a championship team and they're still trying to find that formula or any formula that works. They've, they've allocated so many resources in the, at the wide receiver position as opposed to saying, you know, we're going to get us a dominating offensive line. We're going to get some big guys. We're going to run the football and instead of having Tyler Lockett and DK Medcalf, we're going to have one out of it instead of two of those guys because they're both getting paid big money contracts. And of course you have Jackson Smith, who's a young guy that's one of their top draft choices. But for me, yeah, I'm just, when I look at Seattle, I just don't see it. Once again, I, the, the personality, the, the, the personality of this team. What is it? I don't know what it is. Geno Smith, I don't look at him like a bust. I look at him as a much improved player. He's worked really hard on his body. He's gotten a lot faster. He looks like more of an athlete than what he did in New York. He looks more decisive. He's playing with a lot more confidence, but yeah, you know, he, he's still some of that Geno Smith that we saw with the New York Jets when he's under pressure. Sometimes he might throw the ball up for grabs, but overall, man, I think Geno Smith would be fine. They just have to get more balanced to this, to this thing offensively. And it's always a challenge with a new coaching staff and an, a roster that, look, you made a coaching change for a reason. The team wasn't playing as well as it should have and could have. And you don't just wave a magic wand and make the roster dramatically better in one off season. And there wasn't a sense that they were even trying to do that. The 49ers, there was a sense coming into the season that they were a Super Bowl team potentially. Again, they've been to four out of the last five NFC championships, not having Christian McCaffrey at all this year matters, but they've been able to overcome it, Brock Purdy, who everybody says he's underrated. Does anybody, I mean, I'd like, everybody is giving him credit now. It's just weird. He doesn't get enough credit. He doesn't get enough credit. Where everybody's giving him credit by saying he doesn't get enough credit. He plays well. He runs well. When he's bottled up, he can squirt through for a first down. He's making things happen. He's running that offense. He's not a top five quarterback and probably never will be, but you don't need that in Kyle Shanahan's offense. You just need somebody who can run it, distribute the ball, make the decisions, and when all else fails, we saw it in the highlight a second ago. He can pull the ball down, and he can run right by you and get to the stick. So, you know, there are a lot of things. Why is everyone still questioning and Brock, Brock, Brock Purdy? I mean, the guy can play, he's perfect for this offense. Like you said, he's smart. He knows exactly where everybody's at. He knows how to go through his progression, the first read, the second read, the third read. And then they do a great job of keeping the defense off balance because Kyle Shanahan, he's committed to running a football. And when you're committed to running a football, they've gotten George Kittle a lot more involved in the offense. He's going touchdown. So now the middle of that field really opens up the outside. It also opens up all the jets, sweeps, and RPOs, and all those different things. So Kittle having an impact on the game, the offense, the defense, and how they do things. It's been huge for him. It's not just Deebo and those wide receivers, but it's been Kittle. And of course that run game has been fantastic. But when you get George Kittle, you know he's a willing blocker, but when you get him catching passes, going down a deep side of the sideline and going across the middle, and you have to tackle that big beast, it makes it very difficult on the defensive, the defensive players. But yeah, George Kittle, he's been, he's been a big key for them. Mark catches 58 yards, a couple of touchdowns last night for Kidwell, back to Purdy. I wonder whether he still carries this notion that the chair it's going to turn into a pumpkin. Last pick in the draft, right place at the right time, Kyle Shanahan offense. Not about the guy, it's about the offense, about the system. And meanwhile, he just keeps performing. He just keeps getting it done. You know, he doesn't look like the big six, five picture perfect central casting quarterback. They haven't won a Super Bowl yet. We change our overall perception of a quarterback when he wins a Super Bowl, but he's just getting it done. And it is kind of comical because everybody's saying, why is he underrated? Why is he underrated? Everyone's saying it, which means he's not underrated. If everyone is arguing a point that isn't being argued anymore, because I don't see anyone saying Brock Purdy isn't any good or Brock Purdy's overrated or Brock Purdy's a product of the system, we all see with our own eyes what he can do. I just think the problem is there's kind of a edge of the seat. When is this magic going to end? When is he going to get figured out? And he hasn't been. And at some point, it's not going to be you got to understand this is not going to happen because he's not one of those guys where he comes in. He has a little success and now he's feeling good about himself. Brock Purdy is the right guy. He's the right person. He's the right player in that locker room. He's the right leader. When he has success, he goes back and he works even harder. He focuses even more. And that's why, excuse me, that's why so many guys in that locker room, they have respect for this guy because they see his work ethic. They see his consistency throughout the week, him getting in a hot tub, him studying, him being a leader, him calling the young wide receivers over there working on routes and things like that. Those are the things that get you respect amongst your teammates and your coaches doing the extra things. And think about this, Mike. The fact that he is Mr. irrelevant and where he got drafted at, it's even more incumbent of him to do things right because everybody's looking at him because, okay, how is he going to perform? How is this attitude? So he has to do a little bit more every day. So I don't worry about Brock Purdy. I think he's been fantastic. I think he's going to continue to grow in this offense. And he is the perfect young man. They just need to break bread with him. They need to pay him next year and something fair, you know, but this year is the year. They got to make this run man because they can't pay him $50 million a year and pay debokittle and all these other guys that they're paying. So this is the year right here that they got to get it done. And you're absolutely right now, Rodney. This feels like the last year that they're going to be able to hold this nucleus of players together. They've replaced this nucleus with other guys and hope they can perform. But with Samuel and Kittle and Iuk and McCaffrey, if and when he ever makes it onto the field, Trent Williams and Purdy. And then you throw in Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw on the other side and Greenlaw still recovering from the Achilles tendon tear that happened at the Super Bowl. This feels like it. This feels like their last run. And what was good last night, they slammed the door. They were able to get it done. I want to let us here, Kyle Shanahan, talking about not letting the blown leads against the Rams and the Cardinals cause them to blow another lead last night. Here's Shanahan after the game. You know that we're sick about those two losses that we had and we know, you know, I talked about some heart losses are harder than others. And when you feel like you had those won, especially division games, that's made us sick about it. And you know, we've gone on a stretch here the last two years where we won a lot of games in a row. And a lot of the fourth quarters and some of those win strings these last two years haven't been that tight. And guys have been able to relax a little bit on stuff. And we've been talking about how these two losses are a reminder on how the NFL works. And I think we got a little spoiled in that way of just human nature of sometimes feeling too relaxed and you can never feel too relaxed. I thought we played real well in the second half, but that doesn't mean it's easy to win. And it's some kind of, I mean, that's how it works. We played well. They came back and made some plays which made a tighter and I was glad that our guys could fight through that, realize that games are really never over where you can just sit and chill in the fourth quarter. You got to go beginning to the end and we got that experience today as a guy who gave his all, all the time, no matter what, no matter the score, winning, losing tide, whatever. How do you feel when you hear the head coach suggest that he's got guys that basically take their foot off the gas when they feel like just told you that I just told you that I just said good teams, especially like the San Francisco 49ers, they have a tendency to say, you know, we can get this done at any point in time. That's what good teams do. And he used the word, he used the phrase or the word relaxed. And you just, that's what happens guys, guys on the team, they get complacent, they get relaxed, they get comfortable because they know the system, they know that they got a bunch of good players and they don't really take it to the next level. And he recognizes that as a head coach. So now you bring in the leaders, you say Trent, Trent Williams, you bring in Debo, you bring in all these guys and say, guys, you guys have to be the ones in the locker room that continue with this message about finishing, making sure that we finish him on goal line when we're practicing, making sure that we finish on seven on seven, doing all the things that we have to do. This is what he's preaching to us guys. And I just said in my, when you have a good team, you have a tendency to get relaxed and get comfortable and that in coach just said the same thing. I'm just curious how it makes number 37, who's still lurking inside you somewhere, even though it's been a while. That has to be completely opposite of anything you think about football that you'd have guys on the field, guys on the sidelines celebrating prematurely. And I could imagine that if you saw that happening while it was happening, not during the week, but while it was happening, you'd make sure you got their attention. Absolutely. Because coach always preaches, hey guys, it could be 60 minutes and we can always going to overtime. So no matter what the score is, always stay engaged, always making sure that you're paying attention and that you're engaged in the game. And if I see some guys laughing and joking and getting comfortable, I'm like, come on guys, let's stay locked in. And this stuff is, it's not over. You saw what happened to us the previous two weeks, let's stay locked in. But that's my job and that would be other guys jobs as leaders of that team to make sure that those guys get that message. You know, we all find ourselves in situations where we can feel a little bit nervous. We'll see them in the late afternoon window week seven and then we'll see them on NBC and peacock and then they'll have their bi-week and this is huge because when you're at three and three, the five and three versus three and five is gigantic. And if you split your four and four, now there's still a lot of football to be played and they've shown they can find the gas pedal and win games, but this is their opportunity to remind everybody of who they are against two, well, one really great team and a cowboys team that we're not quite sure what they are yet. Well, you look at the Chiefs and the thing that really stands out to me is not what they're doing on the offensive side of the ball, but it's how good they are on the defensive side of the ball. Steve Spagnola, I've said it before and I said again, best defensive coordinator in all of football and he just has those guys ready. I don't know what the stats are in terms of what they give up on defense, but you can give me that defense probably ahead of any defense in the national football league because they know how to play in big moments. They've been in every situation and they continue to get it done. Now, if the 49ers want to have a chance against the Chiefs, it's not thrown a ball all over the place. You have to be able to run the football and I want to see if Kyle Shanahan is going to be completely committed to running the football or will it be rock pretty fast where he's just throwing a ball all over the place like Geno Smith did last night. They have to be able to run the football against his defense. There was one moment last night that I want to spend a few minutes on just because I like the fact that the NFL was transparent about it. I think that transparency needs to be embraced in all things when there are questionable calls. First play of the fourth quarter. There was a punt by the Seahawks by the 49ers, excuse me, and it seemed like it was indeed touched by a Seahawks in real time. It was hard to tell. Everything's moving fast. The ruling on the field was that it hadn't been touched by a Seahawks and also the ruling was that the 49ers player had been blocked into the Seahawks' returner which resulted the flag being picked up and I think that's where things got a little sideways because it became more about picking up the flag and less about it. That ball touched the Seahawks' returner, Dee Williams, and it turns out it did and it turns out what happened and this isn't the first time this has happened. When you get a prime time game you get a lot of camera angles and it's a challenge for the truck to figure out do we have an angle that shows this and you got to get creative and for prime time games there really are more. You get a one o'clock game on a Sunday with the number five crew from CBS. You got a lot fewer cameras so they found it but they found it too late Rodney and the NFL admitted it. The reason it wasn't overturned with 49ers ball is that they got a late look at the ball hitting the finger of Dee Williams and it was clear and obvious it hit the finger but they didn't have anything clear and obvious before the ruling on the field was upheld and I like the fact that they admit it too many times they just circle the wagons and no comment and they won't talk about it. I think when you have that attitude you get people less inclined to say hey the fix must be in. They're lucky and it's easy to be transparent when the outcome is 49ers win and 49ers cover the spread but if that moment had helped spark the Seahawks to cover or to win maybe they wouldn't have been so transparent because they ultimately didn't get lucky it didn't affect the outcome of the game or the outcome of the bet on the game. Yeah but the thing about it is like there's always going to be three or four situations like that in the games where the official may not get it or something may be overlooked. It's just all part of the game and to have that many angles and all those and you still can't get it right and I mean it is what it is at the end of the day. It's football and you're not going to get everything right. The coaches tell you hey you can't depend on officials they're not going to save you. You've got to go out there you've got to make the necessary plays so us as players when I was growing up in my era we didn't really care about what the officials did we just played football we let the officials do what they do however they call the game they called it you know. Well I think that's the right attitude too because you got to forget about the bad call. If there is a bad call there isn't a damn thing you can do about it now you got to go line up and play. The circumstance is what it is and we'll let other people worry later about whether or not it was a bad call but from the perspective of fans media observers people who bet people who feed plenty of money to the NFL's sports book partners there is a desire that everything be right if possible and I think that when it's wrong we've seen too many times where the NFL won't be candid or as candid as it needs to be. I like the fact that they admitted last night hey we just didn't see that last shot in time if we'd seen it it would have been 49ers ball in that spot but you're right the players have to forget about it everybody else can worry about it and the 49ers players clearly did forget about it they didn't act like oh well they're there it's not our night they put the clamps on eventually and got the win. They did what they had to do. Different Brock Purdy on last night's win moving the 49ers from two and three to three and three and getting the team hopefully back on track. There's always going to be stuff that you can clean up and you know for us our standard is high here and so I think a lot of us would go to all right like we could have done this or that and be better here but I think at the end of the day man it's a team sport and so to go four quarters with all these different kinds of emotions and parts of the game and to be able to rally together and defense get a turnover and then Us score touchdown at the end and it's just that's team football man that's the sport that we play so I feel like we did take a step in the right direction for sure and we're always going to have stuff that we're going to be hard on ourselves and need to grow and get better at but I really do think that we all as a team came together and found a way today really well. I think it's not the best team in the conference even though they're three and three. Let me just let me say this about Brock Purdy. I see why they follow him. This kid he's fantastic I mean he's humble he talks about he talks about football like he loves it and he says team it's team it's about the team it's not about one individual it's not a bunch of individuals you know it's it's one team and that's what I want. That's the message that I want to hear from my quarterback and that's what I love about this young man you can tell me that it's a better quarterback that fits for the San Francisco 49ers his attitude his perspective his humility and he's got that dog up in him Mike. So I love Brock Purdy he's going to continue to push he's going to get us them an opportunity for our NFC championship and I still trust him to be in the San Francisco 49ers this is a highly talented team if they can stay healthy and continue to get a couple guys back on the defensive side of ball they're going to be fine and then once Christian McCaffrey comes back he's going to give them a different spark and then I think he's going to see a lot of the red zone woes go away because Christian McCaffrey he he acquires so much he did so much attention to slow him down it opens up so many opportunities for everyone else so Christian McCaffrey is the key. Two points number one as soon as we're done today Rodney's going to order himself a Brock Purdy Jersey and number two whether he intends it or not whether he intends it or not Rodney is now based upon what he said the last couple of minutes well positioned to do the stadium arrival interview with Brock Purdy when NBC has a couple of weeks. Hey man let me tell you something I just I have a lot of respect for the young man because I was a fifth round draft choice and it's it's difficult as a late round draft choice to make an impression on your teammates the coaches and even having an opportunity to get in the game or to get in practice to make that opportunity for this guy to be the last pick of the draft for him to go through everything that he's gone through and to continue to play and be well respected and be the leader that he is. I mean it's been phenomenal Mike and I just got to give the young man a lot of credit you talk about his faith his maturity his growth his leadership all those things man it's it's tough to do and what he's doing is absolutely has been amazing and he's doing it at a very very low cost now you got me curious Rodney for you personally when was the moment that you felt like they were finally taking you seriously and not viewing you as a late round draft pick and when are we going to cut this guy kind of thing when did when did when did that light go on never never it never goes on when you're a fifth round you always feel like you're going to be released or cut or traded you always have that level of insecurity you asked Tom you asked Brock Perry Tom Brady you asked Brock Purdy these guys that's why they work that's why their approach is what it is because they don't want to ever put themselves in a vulnerable position where they feel like they're going to get cut or release we have that paranoia and that's the thing that drives you as a football player and that's one of the compelling things about the draft because your attitude about yourself for your entire career is shaped by what happens on those two or three days in April how many guys have we seen Rodney who get taken in round one and they think that they're going to start carving their bust for the Hall of Fame and they lose the edge they lose the desire they feel entitled I was a first round pick and you flip it around how many guys who go lower than they thought or end up late round picks it lights a fire that wouldn't have been there if they've been picked in round one it's a ton of guys man and I even look at a kid like Brian Burns when I saw him get drafted by the Troy lines last you know when he got drafted and he got drafted of course he was excited but he was disappointed because he felt like he should have gone earlier and you know and that's the type of paranoia that's the type of desire and drive that we guys like us have me Brock Purdy Tom Brady and late round draft choices because we always feel that level of insecurity we always feel that anxiety we always feel like guys are looking at us or people are looking at us like we're late round like we don't belong like we don't deserve to be here so that's why you always see the competitiveness and the drive and the anger and the frustration and all those different things because you know we feel like we're the underdog and that's the way we play and that's why I love Brock Purdy man I mean to overcome everything that he's overcome to be a starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers man you got to be a special dude to be able to do that and look at him he doing great as you can see the sun starting to come up in Atlanta which means we got to take a break to work on the lighting a little bit for Rodney which we're going to do now when we return will the lights go on for the New York Jets now that they fired coach Robert Sala can the offense turn it around we'll delve into that next on PFT fly there's some things that you can do from differently you know now ultimately we got to we got to execute better and we got to make the numbers right there that was my phone that's like the ex player in me like this is my phone there's my phone there's my phone. Jeff Holberg interim coach of the Jets here's the phone go off and he thinks he's the one who's responsible because he's going to get fined for having his phone on in the locker room or during a team meeting. Holberg now the interim head coach roddy crazy week for the Jets I know coach Dungy has been confused by the timing I'm confused by how and why it happened a two and three team that's one game away from first place could get there on Monday night against the Buffalo Bills but you know it doesn't matter they're moving forward have you been in a situation like that where you had to adjust to an interim coach didn't happen with the charge at one point wasn't it Mike what was the guys name from Oregon State Riley Mike Riley yeah did he get fired my season while you were there Mike and Mike Riley I had June Jones I had Marty Schadenheimer Kevin Gilbride Bobby Ross I had a ton of coaches and it happens but in this situation he didn't deserve it I mean I just think that Robert Salah is such a classy guy and after five games everything that he's had to deal with dealing with Aaron Rodgers and this team and management they should have given him some grace Mike and they didn't give him enough grace and really what should have been him that got fired it should have been offense coordinator he should have got fired and for the life of me you look at that offense there's no creativity there's nothing that's surprising me there's nothing that scares me on that offense it's dropped back pass or some weak play action pass they're not committed to running the football I just don't get it how do you fire the head coach after five games your one game away from being in first place I don't think it's a smart move and for the owner who doesn't really know the tone of the locker room for him to come in and make a decision like that and if whether he called Aaron Rodgers or not if it's me and I liked the head coach I'm saying hey man we need this guy we trust him we believe in him and we need to keep him and if Aaron Rodgers says that Mike I believe that maybe Robert Salah stays but if he doesn't say anything like go ahead that's an excellent point Rodney because so much of this has been Rodgers has offended that anyone would suggest he got Robert Salah fired that obscures the more important question what if anything did you do to save him because surely when you consider everything the Jets have done for Aaron Rodgers how they've been over backwards to get him how he gave back 30 million plus in salary as basically a gift to them a year ago of course they're going to seek his input or at least give him a heads up and if in the process of giving him a heads up he says whoa whoa whoa no no no no you might think it's going to make things better but it's not it's going to make things worse we need to give this guy another chance we need to give it more time it's not his fault the offense thing since my fault he's the defensive guy look at the defensive numbers the defense is great you fire him your best offensive minds gone and then your defensive coordinator becomes the interim head coach your defensive coaching staff is going to be diluted so I'm with you that's what I've been trying to say all week it's not about did Aaron Rodgers get Robert Salah fired it's about Aaron Rodgers didn't save him and he could have absolutely and if like I said before and I didn't know what the nature of their relationship was I mean you see on TV and pushing them and you see him hugging and smiling one day and you don't know really the nature of the relationship but I know if Aaron Rodgers would say hey Woody we need this guy he's he's the right guy to lead us into a championship I know the nature of that locker room these guys love him we need to keep him there's no way the owner fires a minute but if Aaron just says okay if Woody says hey you know we're thinking about moving on from Robert and then Aaron says okay I understand then that's two totally different scenarios right there Mike one of the theories making the rounds and it's based on the timeline that unfolded on Tuesday Rodney the Robert Salah had a staff meeting told the coaches that Nathaniel Hackett was going to be demoted as offense coordinator not fired but I think left with so few duties what am I doing here I should just go I think that's how bad it was going to be Todd Downing was going to take over well here we are now with Todd Downing essentially taking over let's listen to Jeff Alberg from yesterday explaining that he's making the change at the top of the offense after a lot of time to think about it and did not make this decision easily by any means I'm gonna make Todd Downing the the play caller for the New York Jets going forward and this is more a byproduct of a different take on things I'm not saying it's a better or worse take on things by any means but just a different take on things a fresh a fresh approach so ultimately Todd will have the full say on the game plan and ultimately the the the players that are called within the game saying that as well just another testament to the human being that Nathaniel Hackett is the fact that he's going to give us everything in his body and heart and soul and he's going to continue to be a big part of the success we're going to have going forward from an offensive perspective and just I'm I feel so fortunate that he is he's staying with us I mean here's a guy that's been a head coach in this league and and willing to draw cards willing to do whatever it takes so the true heart of the servant just I feel so fortunate that he's on our staff that he's in our lives and I can't speak enough good things about him when he says I feel so fortunate that he's staying with us that kind of suggests that he had the opportunity to just say alright I'm not the offensive coordinator I'm out I'm out and he's choosing to stick around look at the end of the day I don't know how much it matters because Aaron Rogers has exercised free reign at the line of scrimmage to change plays but they had to get him on board with this and we thought on Tuesday he's not on board with Nathaniel Hackett being demoted and maybe that's why they activated the let's get rid of Robert Salah thing yesterday's developments would cut against that because at the end of the day there's no sola and there's no hack at least not in that in that role above offensive coordinator and then you look at Rogers you look at Rogers and what is his impact on the football field by he looks like an old man and I man I have a lot of respect for him for how he's you know fighting and clawing out there trying to stay on the football field but with that offensive line the way he's moving he looks like an old man he looks like he's limping he looks like he's very limited in terms of his mobility and he just can't make the throws and make some of the plays that he made in the past so we're sitting back looking for this Aaron Rogers that we saw two three four years ago and it's not going to happen and when he comes back he's going to continue to limp in and to look like an old man because each week the season gets older you get a little older in the season and I just don't see Aaron Rogers being being the difference maker at this point in time with the way he's looked the first month of the season Mike he's out there limping it's like he's so tight or he can't he can't really explode and you can't you can't it's gonna be hard to win football games and national football league and you got a quarterback that can't move and you know how this goes as you play into your 30s it takes longer to recover from one game to the next and they have played six games they had three between the ninth and the 19th of September he came out of the week five game with a swollen knee week four he came out a week five with a ankle injury and all brick yesterday said there's some hamstring stuff going on too so they get a couple of well they get an extra day before Monday night but still it builds up and you never fully heal from the one thing and then you get something else and you get to a point you're already slower because you're older and then you got these injuries dragging you down and the other thing that's been disturbing about Rogers is his demeanor first half of the game on Sunday always pay attention to the look on the quarterback's face how he's moving how he's acting how he's interacting does he look like he's interested he looked disinterested he looked attached I'm surprised they almost won the game because it felt like he was ready to throw in the towel by the end of the first half and maybe they touched down as well woke him up the most frustrating thing as a player is when you're on a football field Mike and you're limited and you can't do the things that you're asking your body to do so when you see a lot of those looks yes it's look up it might be a look of disgust or frustration at his teammates but it's also a look of I'm frustrated because I'm older I can't do the things that I'm used to doing I mean how many times has he's has he's backed out and done a spun around and rolled out to his right side and it looked great and now he's trying to do that and he's got a little gimp to him and he's not able to do the things so it's frustrating to him and then of course it's frustrating to him because he can't practice with his guys he can't practice the timing routes with Mike Williams because he's always her he can't practice the timing routes with other guys and then you see Alan Lazar who he just absolutely wants to rip his head off because I mean you're my guy I you know I lobbied to get you here they pay you and you're not making the plays and that's that's what you see you see a frustration from the play calling like I said before no creativity when you look at that offense it's very predictable you got Garrett Wilson he's frustrated he's a young guy that seems like he's frustrated they don't run the ball enough they don't know which running back to use at what time it's just an absolute mess in the New York Jet system now and as we get spoiled by this notion that quarterbacks can play into their mid 40s it's got to be a guy who was never all that mobile in the first place like Tom Brady because the legs are going to go before the arm goes the arms going to be there the legs aren't and for a guy like Aaron Rodgers who was always a mobile quarterback even if he didn't run a lot he had the ability to run away from pressure he'd see his stretch of green grass and he'd run to it you start to take that away you got to readjust how you are operating your body before you actually throw the ball Brady it was never an issue Brady got to the point by the end where he will start to close in he just throw the ball up for grabs if he had to but Rogers has to make that transition he almost has to play like he did the year Rodney that he had a calf injury and he was basically playing on one leg he stayed in the pocket and he delivered it that way I think he needs to come to that realization I got to do that I can't frustrate myself by trying to do the things I can't do anymore yeah and I mean I think that's just an adjustment that all older players have to make you know and if you're not as fast as you as you once were as a secondary guys the safety you might need to take instead of lining up at 12 yards you line up at 14 yards those are some of the subtle changes that you make but as a quarterback in the National Football League especially one that we're we've grown so used to moving around and making these spectacular plays now all of a sudden he's trying to get away from a 325 pound lineman and he can't run away from his guy so he's frustrated so now his mindset has to change I have to get the ball out quicker I don't really trust my offensive line I mean they're better than what it was last year but I still don't trust this offensive line and of course they don't have a lot of playmakers I talked about Alan Lazar I mean he's a big physical kid there's no way he should be coming across the middle dropping passes and he's a big fast kid he should be catching passes down the field and I just like I said before I just don't see it happening with Aaron Rodgers in his offense maybe the new offense coordinator Tom Downey will give him a spark and maybe show some level of creativity but I want you to watch this offense and just see how just bland it is it's just simple that'll be the last game for week six we're gonna take a break when we return we'll talk about some of the other games to come this weekend that's next year on PFT Live one of the biggest matchups in college football this season right here on peacock and NBC on Saturday number two Ohio State at number three Oregon coverage starts at 7 p.m. eastern big 10 Saturday night presented by discover alright the next day sixth Sunday the NFL season Rodney you know you tell me commanders are playing Ravens week six six weeks ago I think okay now I think hey that's game of the day because the commanders four and one Jayden Daniels has been awesome the Ravens at three and two feel like they're better than that Ravens at home still need to win this is like one of those house money games for the commanders nobody expects him to win but my gosh if they could go in there and upset the Ravens that would be the kind of signature win that gets everyone to take that team seriously I'm not sure they can but I'm sure of this Jayden Daniels is awesome and he told me last week Rodney he's still got a higher gear we haven't seen yet yeah I think you have to take the commander's series I think most teams in the national football league they're taking them serious because of the quarterback but also what they've done in the front office the guys that they hired there Adam Peters the head coach Dan Quinn just what they've done and Bobby Wagner at the middle line back position having those big two defensive tackles just they have good players Mike and we have a young quarterback that's humble that comes in he does it all the right things he's a leader he's exciting he's he's he's not afraid he can do all the different things man it just gives you an opportunity and like I talked about we for how many years did we look at the commanders and look at them like man this is like the black eye of the league or the you know black hole of the league you know now you don't hear anything negative coming from the commanders you you don't hear anything negative you hear nothing but positive things how you know how well the young quarterback is playing and just all the success that they're having it's it's really good to see but to me I agree with you this is the game of the day because they're playing a good Ravens team this Ravens team is really starting to figure out who they are on a defensive side of the ball they're still learning their defensive coordinator so yeah this is the game of the day Mike we're down to our final minute Rodney but an important development this week guy you know well Dean Pease joins the Ravens as a senior advisor to the court the first year defensive coordinator and they're going to put him to work right away because we got to figure out what Jayden Daniels does what he doesn't do and how we can slow him down yeah Dean Pease is the perfect guy he's a tremendous coach he listens he's smart and he knows how to make the necessary adjustments I think it's a big call for him and this is also the point in the season where there might be enough film out there that you can kind of crack the code on what it is that the commanders are doing and if you try to crack the code and Jayden Daniels still does well you're never going to crack the code on who could be one of the great quarterbacks in the NFL sooner than later Rodney great stuff buddy safe travels this weekend everybody enjoy the games on Sunday stick around for the PFTPM Chris Simms on buttoned Hicks podcast we'll see you with a fresh edition of PFT Live Monday.
