And now your hosts, Carl Brouwer, Lauren Fix, and Javier Mota. Hello, this is Carl Brouwer. I'm here with Lauren Fix, doing our latest Total Car Score podcast, and this one's going to be interesting, because we have a guest. We do not have Javier. He's off globe trotting, as always. But we do have a third element here, and that is James Melphy. He's going to talk to us about expel PPF protective film solutions, protective film for your cars. This has become a really big industry in the last few years. I think Lauren and I are both quite familiar with it, because if you have a high-end car, you want to protect your car. But Lauren, why don't you take it from here? Maybe ask James the first question, and James, you can tell us more about the company. All right, well, first, hi, James. Welcome to our podcast. Thank you, Fred. I appreciate you guys having me. Yeah, and you know, I'm a big fan of expel. Now, a lot of people may not know the name. But what you do here, and especially if you buy a new car, use car, they're always trying to sell you on paint protection. And there is a huge difference on what one brand carries nor another brand carries. Now, I use Buffalo Car Care, which is one of your first clients, the great customers. And because Carl and I both have high-end cars, I think it's extremely foolish not to have your car paint protected. But if you buy one of those really cool flat paint colors, like you're seeing on the new Genesis, you're seeing them on literally everything, BMWs, yeah, you definitely need paint protection. So James, introduce yourself, introduce your company and what the difference is. Absolutely, I appreciate you guys having me. Again, my name is James Melphy. I'm the PPF product manager at expel, which basically means we get to test and try new stuff and develop new products and tinker and have a ton of fun. So for a car guy like me, I've been in industry for 15 years. Start out like every car guy. You start out with your dad's wash bucket, and you're just wiping stuff down. And then you eventually start growing from there. I ran a shop for almost 12 years, right outside of Boston, before coming on to the expel team. So I've always been a tester, a tinkerer, liking to try new products, see what works best for the consumer and just try to find the most value, right? Because our cars take a beating every single day. So many things get thrown at it, and we just try to find products that are extremely high performance that add value for the long term, right? That's kind of our ultimate goal here at expel. So yeah, PPF in general, you were, you know, alluding to why it's so important. I think that the easiest way to break that down is now more than ever from an automotive lens, where we just don't have as much material or as much paint and clear coat going on the vehicle, right? So our paint is probably the most prone to shipping and scratching than it's ever been in probably like automotive history. So there is a lot more awareness, which is great, right? Now there's just so much more consumer awareness, but I think that's the reason behind that is that I think outside of companies like us marketing and getting out there in the marketplace, I think people are starting to see they're driving a couple thousand miles, and they're like, oh my God, I got all these chips, you know, this didn't happen 10 years ago, and sure, don't get me wrong, there was still chips back then. All right, 20, 30 years ago, it's certain, you know, automotive paint was still chippable, but not to probably the same degree that it is now. So now more than ever, I think PPF paint protection film is an absolute need if you're someone that loves to preserve their car and have it look new for as long as humanly possible. The best, I think the best example I could give of that is my own, and I bought a car, and of course here I am, working for Expel, I couldn't put the film on there right away, right? You know, we had a little one, we had a one year old, and she's running around and we just couldn't put the film on right away. Next thing you know, I have seven chips, and I'm like, you know, why did I wait? Why did I wait? You know, now I'm touching everything up, getting the film on there, and now it's perfect, right? But it's like, you know, you don't know how quickly that chips can start to occur, but once you start driving, it can happen. So that's the, I think, the biggest advocate for PPF. - It's fascinating that you talked about how quickly they happened, James, because the first car I ever got wrapped with paint protection film was a 2018 Dodge Demon. And the reason I got it was because of what Lauren talked about, I went ahead and ordered the option that had flat, black paint on the hood, roof, and trunk. And as soon as I got the car and I saw it in person, then I'd been thinking increasingly about doing a wrap, you know, and protecting the film, protecting the paint on my car with film. But when I saw the car in person, I was like, oh my gosh, that's a lot of surface area, and if something happens to it, you're in big trouble, because you can't just buff out a scratch on Matt, because you end up buffing out the Matt, and now you've got a nice little shiny section of your Matt, because you had to buff out a scratch. So that's what pushed me to get it wrapped, finally. I get one of my personal cars wrapped. But I got the car, I wanted to get the car broken in, and I remember I had it for like a week and a half, and I couldn't even drive it. It was during a bunch of January activity, like the Detroit Auto Show in CES. So I finally had a weekend, and I drove it 600 miles, and I just went up the coast and came back down. And then I had the appointment for the PPF, and I get there, the car has 600 miles on it. I have my guy, Rapid, who I really like and trust. And I'm like, so, car looks good, huh? I mean, it's brand new, so you got it wrapped pretty quick, and all of these, like, yeah, I mean, it's good. I mean, you still have some chips now, but, you know, and I'm like, what? And he's like, yeah, yeah. So he takes me, he walks me around the car, 600 miles after I got the car, a week and a half, two weeks after it came in, and points out probably five or six chips on the car. Exactly what you were just saying, and I'll brand new car, less than two weeks old. And I was just like, what the, you know? So when my next car that I wanted wrapped, which is a 2019 Ford GT Carbon Series, the truck they would deliver for was like, oh, we'll deliver it to a track, we'll deliver it to your house for a big party. They brought it to the PPF shop, and it rolled out of the back of that truck, never went over 10 miles an hour in the parking lot, and went into the PPF shop, because I was like, okay, fool me once, fool me twice, you know, we're not gonna play that game anymore. So yes, it happens quickly, and if people think, well, I'll get it wrapped eventually, you can get it wrapped whenever you want. If you're driving the car on the street, you're getting chips. Yup, yup, now I hear that story all the time, and like, you know, when I, you know, kind of going back to time at the shop, we had consumers do that all the time, right? Like, oh, James, I'm gonna ship it right to you, I'm not gonna drive for a minute, you know, even my, I got my wife a new car a couple of years ago, and I swear to God, the salesman's looking at me, like, I have three heads, and like, guys, keep all the protective plastics on, don't just leave it in the corner, I'll get it, right? And then I'm out in the parking lot, taking like all the plastic sheeting off, and then I put on like our, we have a kind of a cool product, we have like, it's called track wrap, and it's a temporary PPF, like literally just meant to be kind of like a substitute, a more durable like painter's tape, guys use it for travies and all kinds of stuff, kind of a cool product, so I'm literally out there like, putting, cutting all these strips of track wrap, guys are coming by like this dude, do it. (laughing) - Especially if it's a daily driver, you know what I mean? - Yeah, if my wife's like, so what does this mean now? Like I have to drive this car with this temporary film, I'm like, yeah, we need to, until we can get in the shop, we gotta put this film on, that's our temporary barrier, then we can put the real film on in a couple of weeks, you know? - That's a great idea, really, that's a great-- - That is! - 'Cause people use painter's tape, you know, I've seen people do that, they just, you know, if they're smart and they know what we're talking about here, and they have no option to get it wrapped, but they want to drive the car, you know, you see these kind of blue pieces of tape all over the front of the car, and it doesn't look great, but I totally get it, but I assume what you're talking about is a clear, so it's still not quite as overt as far as like painter's tape, right? - 100%, yeah, so it's a clear temporary PPF, but it's designed to take more of the brunt of a rock impact than painter's tape's going to be. - Exactly. - While still being safe, you can still remove it, you can still take it off easily, and not leave adhesive all over the place. So we, super, I mean, guys love it for, you know, the Dodge Demon guys love it. I was actually out in Tennessee a couple of months ago at a Dodge Demon track day, specifically. I mean, we were just ripping up doing on a drag strip, and we put this temporary PPF like kind of on those rear wheel arches, kind of like the lower part of the rear, so just everywhere where we knew rubber was going to just like absolutely get covered everywhere. It would just help us, I mean, for that instance, it was just more of like, okay, we just don't wanna clean up the mess for three hours, then we just put some on here and just take it off, so we ended up doing it. - That's brilliant, it's a great idea. - Yeah, yeah. ♪ You spent it over here ♪ - Now at T-Mobile, get four 5G phones on us and four lines for $25 a line per month when you switch with eligible traders, all on America's largest 5G network. - Minimum of four lines for $25 per line per month without a paid discount using debit or bank account, $5 more per line without a pay plus taxes and fees and $10 device connection charge. Learn more at Capella.edu. - It's funny because I think when people think, oh, it's only new car. So when I get a new car, I'll consider this. So I have a 2016 Cayenne diesel and I'm not getting rid of it. It's only like 40,000 miles on it. So I took it to my local guy who you guys know 'cause you've been working with them for a long time and they said, yeah, we can do it. They did the paint correction. Then they put a ceramic coat on. Then they put the PPF and people were like, why would you spend a couple grand doing that? I said, because now I have a car that looks absolutely amazing. I live in Buffalo, so we have winter. So no matter what, that car will be looking like brand new and I special ordered this car. So it's a special wishes car, paint a sample, the whole thing. So I wanna make sure, I wanna keep it. People are like, it's 10 years old. I don't care because that's the kind of thing you can do. Now we've also done this with older Mustangs. My husband restores older Shelby Mustangs and we just did it to a 66 Shelby because it was original paint. And it's only original once. And if you take off the paint or repaint it, it's not worth as much. But putting paint protection on increases in value. So that also increases the value on use cars as well as your new car. So I think you should talk about the value improvement too. - 100%. So I mean, there's like for new cars, it's kind of like value, what would be the word? It's kind of like retaining the value, right? You wanna, car is perfect. I want it to remain perfect. I want it to look great forever, right? That's kind of the new car value proposition. The older car value proposition, which I used to enjoy more because it's more of a transformation, right? It's like, okay, a car comes in, we're polishing it, we're removing scratches. What I used to always say to, what I say now to our dealers, what I used to say to clients was that, okay, the goal is to correct everything that we can correct. So that could be chips, that could be scratches. Make the car look unbelievable again. And then the goal is to keep everything at bay, right? So there might be some underlining damage that's still gonna be there. Like you'll never be able to get the chip 100% flat, but the goal is to make the improvement, get the film on there. So from then on, no more damage is happening, right? So you're preserving it from that point onward. That transformation, it's obviously definitely more tangible than it is with a new car. You're like, oh my God, it went from scratch and chips. And now I have film on it and it looks incredible. And now it's gonna be so easy for me to maintain. And I think that goes with old cars and new cars is that kind of reduction in maintenance and how that works or why PPF does that is obviously PPF is there to stock chips, right? That's kind of it's like first thing. But the byproduct of that of this self-healing, ultra durable polyurethane based protection is that it is also a phenomenal at stopping swarm marks and scratches and scuff marks and all that kind of stuff. Which for a lot of cars, like if you're a Porsche fan, like in you like there, whatever it may be, like Miami Blue or Jet Black or whatever it may be, a lot of those paints, those clear coats are on the softer side. So they're very easily scratchable. So to maintain them, you're like walking on eggshells, you're scared to wipe it. You're like, oh, it looks so good. I wanna wash it, I wanna keep it nice. But the more I wash it, the more I'm scratching it. So I think that what I used to love or I still love about PPF is the fact that you don't have to walk on eggshells anymore. You don't have to be worried about the driving and the washing. You're just out there, you're worrying less and driving more, right? That's the, I think the ultimate goal and the biggest value that you could ever talk about with PPF is that it just allows you to actually enjoy the paint instead of worrying about it. And at least from my experience, that's always been the big one for clients. - No, I agree 100% and it's funny you talk about kind of the stress element, right? So once I got that demon wrapped, that was my first time. And of course, none of us have as much room as we want our garages and we've got too much stuff. And so you can walk through a garage be kind of tight clearances. And I don't know how many times I walked past that demon and maybe I slightly bump into it or I'm moving something that just slightly touches it and all. And I'm like, oh wait a sec, PPF. And it took me very short time to realize, wow, beyond the fact that I know it's not gonna get chipped when I'm driving it on the street. I don't even have to worry about just walking around the car now. It would take a heck of a mistake in a garage area or something like that to actually hurt the paint. Not gonna get some stupid little scuff because your kid walked by it with jeans on and they kind of half leaned on the car while they were or something like that. So that's point one. But then the bigger point, like you're saying too, is if you halt the aging process, whether the car has eight miles on it and you halt it then or the car has 80,000 miles and you halt it then. And especially if you do a paint correction and you get the paint looking as good as you can before you wrap it, then you've halted the aging process like Lauren did right after you've made the paint look great. And from then on, you go to a car wash, it's like 80% lower effort to wash the car because that paint, that protection film, especially if it's ceramic coated on whatever you wanna do to it, it just falls off. The dirt just comes off the cars. Now I go wash a non PPF car, a car without the film protection on it. And I get so annoyed because you have to really scrub to get the bugs, the hardened bugs or anything else off there because it sticks to the paint much more easily than it sticks to the protection film. So yeah, you get so many benefits. You stop the aging process, you lower your stress when the car's outside the garage or even in the garage and you make it much easier to maintain the car's look whenever you go to the car wash. You get spoiled and then you don't wanna wash cars that don't have PPF on them because it's so hard to wash. - 100%, 100%, yeah. - Well, I think the one thing people don't realize is now I know you guys wrap different things. There's different textures and different things that expo offers. Can you tell us what the different offerings are? So customers who are thinking, maybe I wanna change the color, make something carbon look, you do all that as well. - Yeah, so do we wanna stay in the automotive realm specifically? - I don't know what else do you do? - No, we're carrying our hands a little bit everything but obviously we have a marine division where we protect airplanes, we protect home and office. I mean, you name it, we kind of have a protective product which is kind of goes back to our mantra and like protect everything, protect everything that you love. - So you also do like glass, like for offices and things like that? - Yep, we have window film for architectural window films. - Oh, wow. - You know, block UV, heat rejection. Like that's in its own sphere. - But that's something I didn't even know and I know your product well. - Yeah. - And I've been using your product for jeez over a decade but it's nice to know. - Historically, we have always had our black, our gloss black PPF which is the same protective attributes as our traditional clear PPF but is black. So if that has always been like the accent panel king, right? So if you want like the Dodge Demon matte paint but you want a gloss black hood or a gloss black roof and a gloss black spoiler, but still have the protective attributes of PPF that has always been our product. But in terms of just kind of like our main automotive line, at least for PPF, there's a couple, right? That you may not have heard of before. The first one is gonna be our Fusion PPF which our Fusion PPF is paint protection film with an infusion of ceramic coating characteristics. So we have a client who is looking at PPF and they're looking at coatings and they're like, okay, I see that, I see this, I like both but maybe they're a little bit more budget dependent or dependent then this is kind of a paint protection film that has the hydrophobic effect of a ceramic coating, has that kind effect, has that ease of cleaning effect of a ceramic coating infused into the top coat, which is kind of a very cool thing. So it's kind of the, it's a little bit of the best of both worlds and it's something that's been incredibly popular in our line. And then the next one is our ultimate plus which is kind of like our gold standard PPF, everybody thinks of expelled or think of them a little bit plus self-healing, top-coded, paint protection film, stomping rocks, preventing scratches, doing what it does every day. That's kind of what we're synonymous for. And then thinking about that matte black demon, we have our stealth, right, which is our satin PPF, right? So our satin PPF can either be four OEM matte paints or it can be if you have a gloss car and you just want it to have that really beautiful satin finish, what a transformation that is. I mean, that is a product that's so popular for us because of the wow factor, right? You go from your car comes in gloss, it leaves matte. I mean, it just gets everybody so excited then. And while still having the same self-healing and protective attributes that our gloss products do. So that's a really cool product that's been a cornerstone of our line for a long time. And then obviously, we were talking about colors and thicknesses and stuff like that. We also have a variety of different PPFs in different thicknesses. So the one that I'll highlight is like our 10 mil, right? So our 10 mil is about, it's two mils thicker than our traditional PPF. And it's four, it could be for the four runner crowd. It could be the range Rover off road guys. You're Jeep Wrangler guys that want to protect their fender flares that are getting, they're taking more hits and more abrasion and just want that more robust protection that's gonna actually stop something. That's kind of where our 10 mil kind of comes into play. And that's been super popular amongst kind of like that off road crowd. So there's something for everybody, you know? - Yeah, you have great product compared to some of the competitors. Go ahead, Karl. - Yeah, I didn't know that you had such a wide variety. And I love the idea of like matte versus clear or gloss. Just a lot of options that you're allowing people to use to personalize the vehicle. You know, I remember hearing about this technology probably like 30 years ago. I mean, I started as an editorial assistant at Hot Rod Magazine almost 30 years ago this month. It's somewhat depressing to me, but I guess at least I'm still here, right? I've been doing this for that long. But I remember them talking about that back then. And I remember like a guy coming in with samples and I'm sitting there at the editorial assistant desk and the guy trying to push this stuff. And I remember it looked kind of like very stiff and like kind of plasticky and all. And all I could think was, you know, all the people who would put, remember bras, car bras, but you would put on the front of the car. - Yeah, the final ones, yeah. - And they'd scratch the car up at the edge where they were connecting to the car and they'd cause an uneven level of paint fade over time if you left them on and who knew what collected underneath them and all. And I was always thinking when I saw this stuff, it's like, okay, how long before that stuff yellows? And then you try to pull it off and there's all this gross glue underneath that held it on for all that time and everything. And I was kind of concerned about it. Well, I never got any paint protection film on my 2005 Ford GT that I got when it was new in 2005 for all those reasons. And I'm surprised how well it's held up. Doug DeMiro has it now, but it still has a lot of scratches on the front from 30 plus thousand miles I put on. I think he's over 40 now. None of this is a concern now, is it James? Like you can pull the PPF off after a certain amount of time and it's not leaving any kind of grow. I've seen enough cars where they've been re-wrapped or they've been re-protected at all. And there's no big issue. The long-term maintenance and warranty coverage, can you tell us a little bit about that? Like what goes on after you've had this for five years? Can you just give us maybe a quick dive on that? Yeah, and to your point, it is designed to be removed. That's kind of rule number one. The goal is to have the vehicle be protected. And at some point in the product's lifecycle, it's removed and refreshed. And the lifecycle of the product, well, while we do have a 10-year warranty that prevents cracking and peeling and discoloration and kind of all your normal warranty stuff, the way a product degrades is very dependent on how the vehicle is driven, where it's being driven, how it's being driven, what the climate is, where it's being garaged, what are the road conditions, all these little variables kind of play into how a protective product degrades over time, like on a linear line, right? So if you had a car that's in January, you purchase the car, it's brand new, you put PPF on it, and you start driving for that year. Dependent on how that owner maintains it and drives it will kind of dictate where along their journey the owner is gonna come to a point and say, okay, it was a protective barrier, it was a sacrificial barrier, now it aesthetically is kind of got to the point where it needs to be replaced, let's replace it. Now, that journey is different for everyone, 'cause you could have a guy with a GT3 RS who is a total garage queen, doesn't track it, doesn't, you know, and just is constantly putting sealant and ceramic coatings on it and just loving on it constantly, that film might be going nowhere anytime soon. I mean, that film could stay on for 10, 12, 15 years and look for me, you know? - Yep. - That was me, I don't track my GT3 RS, I have a race car, so yeah, I got plenty of ceramic on it. - Oh yeah, oh yeah. But then you have, then you have, on the same vein, you'll have a guy with, but maybe in its, whatever, an enthusiast vehicle, like a, I don't know, Honda Civic Type R, whatever it may be, but it's their daily. They can't get around driving every day and maybe they live, you know, in New England and we got salt and we got rocks, if not boulders. You know, we got, we got everything, right? So after maybe, you know, you know, depending on how he's maintaining it, maybe act at 10 year mark, he's like, okay, it did its job, I've gotten my money's worth and some, now it's time to take it off safely. And the safest way to do it is with steam, 'cause steam kind of loosens up the adhesive without putting stress on the clear coat and it can be peeled away. And I'd still always advise going to a professional who understands that process just for the utmost safety, but it's as easy as that. It's as easy as just kind of loosening up the glue and peeling it off and that is as satisfying as it going on in the beginning, 'cause you're just like, you see the film, you see the hits it's taken over the years, you peel it off and oh my God, I forgot how great my paint looked, it's perfect. So that's kind of the satisfying thing. - And there are professionals all over the country, all over North America, all over the world, I think you guys are selling your product now, because it seems to be the brand to go for. If you're looking for the gold standard, I would say Expella is the gold standard. And no, you're not paying me, I say that. I've been spending a lot of money right? - We tried, we tried, we tried. But you're right, yeah, we are everywhere right now. Middle East, Europe, Asia, Canada, South America, you name it, we're all over the place. So it's awesome for us on the product side, 'cause man, do we get a sample size of how our products are reacting in different parts of the world, which, before I came into product development, you think about North America, you think about where you're at, right? And you don't think about, okay, what if we just put an insane amount of extreme heat with all these other normal variables, what happens? So I think we have a real benefit on our team to be able to look at different regions and make sure our product that works in North America, works in Europe, works in the Middle East, works in China, because all those different climates throw in different factors, and we have to account for everyone. So I think we have a real advantage that we're constantly testing in different climates to make sure our products are warming. - So where can we find information on expel? Because I'm sure everyone that's listening is like, okay, I gotta check this out. - Yeah, I mean, obviously expel.com is a good starting point. - Just X, the letter X, right, X-P-E-L. - Yep, 100%, go right to expel.com, check out our products. It'll kind of be de-diving for days of all that you can look through. And then there's a dealer located on there, 'cause I would always recommend, just like you guys were describing your personal experiences with going to a dealer, and you trust that person, right? At the end of the day, there's still a human being putting the film on your car, right? And going through that process with them is so important. So we have a dealer located where you can just go on and find a dealer closest to you, build that relationship, because that's where you're gonna kinda really lay out your project, see what you need to protect, see what you don't need to protect, what products make the most sense for me, because it isn't cookie cutter. I mean, we talked about a variety of different products, and it's kind of like a tailored suit, right? You gotta kind of find the product that fits the best of that particular owner, and doing that starts with kind of reaching out to your local expel dealers. - Yeah, I've had great luck and become good friends with the guys at Buffalo Park here, I know they're one of your bigger customers. But we do appreciate your time, and if you wanna learn more, go to expel, it's justtheletterxpo.com, and I think you'll be impressed, you have social media as well, I know that, 'cause I follow you guys on social media. And Carl, we can find you @Carl with a K, Brower, right, on all social media? - Yeah, Carl Brower, Carl Brower Cars on YouTube. - And I'm at Carcoach Reports, and Javier is at Javier Mota, and he's on his way actually to Nice, he just sent me a text, "Yeah, I'm going to Nice." And I'm like, "Okay, I'm not, I wish." But we all do different things, I just got back from Italy, so I'm taking a break.
