I'm on the road with my producer, Blackers. Good afternoon, Blackers, how are you? - Good afternoon, I'm good. So I'm still awake for breakfast this morning, so yeah. - He's a good one. So we are in Clithero on Lorgate, and we're at Cowgirl clothing company, which is a shop that you might not have noticed before because it's tucked away, but it's a hidden gem. So you need to come and find it if you've not seen it before. And you know, contrary to belief, it does say Cowgirl on the door outside, but actually there's lots of things in here that are not cow girlish. So there's a right eclectic mix, I would say. And the owner of here is the beautiful Fran Wilson. Hi Fran, how are you? - I'm good, thank you. - Good, very well. - So thank you so much for letting us, well for closing your shop for us, and for letting us just have this hour to ourselves, which is very much appreciated, we really do appreciate it. - No problem. - So first of all, what brought you here 'cause you're a Burnley girl aren't you? - Yeah, well I'm actually from Sabden. I grew up there and then lived in Burnley, I live in Reed now. So, but I went to school in Clithero, I've got lots of friends in Clithero, and it's just an ace, little town in town, just love it. And then the shop popped up. It was a bit of an idea. I have these things and this would just perfect everything just fell into place. So, I was working with my husband for like about eight years, we've had an e-commerce business importing mortar cross stuff of all things, which is not my realm, it's his. But I was originally a hairdresser. But after having three children, I had to give that up. (laughing) I can't quite manage everything in everybody's hair. So, that's why I did that. And then once they get a little bit older, you get a bit more time on your hands and I needed to do something for me. So, this is what I've ended up there, really. And it is a bit of a niche place and people always ask me, what made you do this? And really the reason behind the cowgirl bit is that I'm a singer, I only started singing after the pandemic, after COVID. - No way. - So, I never sung like, sort of in public apart from karaoke, that was the only thing I'd done. And then you get to that age where it's like not cool to do it anymore. (laughing) And stuff like that. And then you lose your confidence completely. And then after COVID, I was like, everybody else, when you couldn't go anyway, couldn't do anything, it's like, I need a hobby. And that was always in the back of my mind. It was always singing in my kitchen and stuff like that and in the car. So, I went and sang for somebody and he was like, yeah, you know, you've got a good voice. And then I ended up finding like an up a mic and doing that. But it was in Blackpool because I was too scared to go anywhere around here. - There's anybody in India. - Yeah, yeah, that was exactly it. So, I kept it a secret even still then. And I met these guys that helped me. I auditioned for a band and I didn't get the part because obviously I didn't have any experience and I didn't have the guitar skills. I don't play an instrument. So, I did the open mic with them. They helped me. They were sort of like, we'll do an open mic, get you there and they were really, really good. So, I was looking for an outfit 'cause it was like a country style set. And I was sort of like scouring the internet because there's not really many shops that sell different things. And I was like, there's a gap in the market here. There are people that sell Western clothes and Bohemian stuff, but they tend to be down south. - Do that. - Yeah, and there's a Western wear shop in Blackpool, but it's mainly men's I think. That's why I try and do a bit of the fashion stuff. You know, not just like dead. You know, crossover, I'd call it. And I love that Bohemian style and I love retro. Anything that's like just not high street standards. - Yeah, I just love the past, me. I just love like the old fashion stuff. You know, like '70s, '60s, '70s. I was sayin' we're born it wrong, you know. - Oh, gosh. - Isn't that lovely? Well, I've got to say this shop is incredible. Obviously, I like things that aren't just straightforward as well and it's just beautiful. I mean, you've got some really, really great things and even better to see that you've got a nice sale rail as well. I do love that. We all love a park and it's all wet. - Oh, my God. This is Ruth Telford on Ribble FM, and I am in the Cow Girl Clothing Company in Clotherall with The Lovely Fram. - Fram, you wrote a song in, well, you've written a few songs actually, haven't you? How many songs have you written? - Well, not that many that have been released. I did, I've wrote one which has just been released now and previous to that, the one that I recorded, I've done bits of vocals for producers and I recorded one which is on Spotify with my cousin, last Halloween, so it's been 12 months. And that was a cover of a Bruno Mars song, but he's a drum and bass producer in Los Angeles, actually. He's from around here, he's from Nelson. - Oh, he did sound fancy for a minute. - I know, he's not that, yeah. So he's done really well for himself and he does that, so he helps me do that and I help him put vocals on things. But then I was just like, I need to, because I haven't sung for years and I sing covers and I love every kind of music. So I'm not like just soul or country. I just, if it's a song and it's a tune and I can get a backing track for it, I'll sing it. So it's hard to find your own style and who you want to be and so, but I'm really into dance music, house music, love going out and having a good time. But your dog do it so often when you get to 40. - Well, it's children, isn't it? - Yeah, they hold you back. (laughing) - But they're not children forever, so. - Oh, that's true. - I don't want to wish it were, that's not fair, but, so that's like sort of where I get a lot of, I want, you think, what do you want this song to do? I want people to dance, whether they're in the kitchen, whether they're doing the Ryan in or cleaning the bathroom, or they're at a club, or they're in the pub, wherever. In the car, I just thought I want it to be one of those songs that comes on the radio and people go, I love that song, it's really catchy and, you know, it reminds me of this or it reminds me of that. So that's where the sort of inspiration came from. I was like, right, this is the song that I want to make and do. I had all these lyrics lined up for a song and then when I sort of went through what I wanted it to be, I was like, right, re-write the whole thing, no? And this is what it's going to be, it's going to be a carefree kind of song. - Well, I have to say, I've heard the song, obviously, and I think it's really catchy. I think it's really, I love it. I really do, and I think somebody, well, everybody who hears it will be remembering it. And, you know, like, you know, something just plays on your mind, you keep playing it and playing it. I feel like it's one of those, it's very catchy. I'd like to talk about it more when we get back, but for the time being, would you like to introduce your song? (laughing) - This has taken me back. Back in my day, it were better because it wasn't necessarily, it's just different. But I went to a booth a last year with the girls for, like, try and relive our youth. We were all four to the same year, so we went and I loved it. But the one thing that I found as a negative is the mobile phones in the clubs and everybody's recording it. And I just want everyone to have a good time. And they miss it, don't they? Just turn and look at each other and dance and things like that. And I find that a lot of the world is like that. And I think, you know, maybe COVID does something to do with that. The young people haven't had that go into the pub. Like when the young talking to people and the phones play a big part. Yeah. I just think phones, yeah. I think phones were anywhere, weren't they? And I want to just, I just wanted it to be like, just forget about that. Like the time when we didn't have phones. And when you go to some places and they don't have them, everyone's so much more engaged in the night. And with the people that are around them, they're listening to the music. No, you know, it's all these like fancy light shows now, which are amazing. But I think you've come to listen to the DJ or listen to the person that's singing, not necessarily stand there and film something. And do they ever look at it? Again? No. I don't know. And you know, I've done it before. We all do it. We all think, I need to capture this moment. And it's like, why don't you just try and capture it in your brain? I always say that to the children. I was like, take a photograph in your brain a bit and try and remember it. But I don't know. See, I don't want to be one of them people that are like saying, oh, in my day, you know. Yeah, I know. Well, I am with this, obviously, the radio, but certainly not for singing. So, how do you go about doing your own record? Where does that come from initially? Well, it's all new to me as well. I've learned, I've had to learn in the past couple of years just so much, but I'm like a sponge. Wherever I go, I'm like, I'm asking questions, but I'm no good technical. I like computers and stuff like that. And the people like I work with, 'cause I don't have any musical background. I don't understand. I have no language. I'm like, can you just put one of them and I'll explain it. Oh, whatever. And I talk in like doings and bobbins and bits and bobs and stuff like that. But people are so patient. You work with these producers. They're absolutely brilliant. So, the guy that produced this one for me, I told him how I wanted the song to sound. You can say, I like this type of thing or whatever. And then I record the vocals. I have recorded vocals when I recorded with my cousin. We had an hour to record a song before we caught his flight back and we went to these studios in Manchester where you just get an hour. Wow. And there's no technician in there, so you have to kind of do it yourself. But he wasn't really sure how to plug everything in. Once we got going, we were fine. And we just went through the song really, really quickly and got what we needed to. But then for this song that I've just done for Take Me Back, I went to a recording studio and I had a guy work with me. And he was absolutely brilliant. It's called King Studio and it's up like near Conforth. I've been there before and he's just dead easy because you're there all afternoon and he was really helpful in like, I think, you know, you could do with, you know, he helped me with what I needed to, like I said, don't know the language. Yeah, so I like explained it best I could to him and he understood me. So it was really, really good. He didn't just like make me do my vocals and that was it. We worked together on what would sound good. So you say you wrote all the words, which is wonderful. So who wrote the actual Beat the Rhythm? So that was a producer that I've used in, he's actually in the States. So you do it all online. Well, not online, we do it on the phone and stuff like that. Texting, voice notes, lots of voice notes saying it. I want it to sound like this. So you come up with like the top line, which is, I was like, I had the chorus and I had some words jotted down, but I really, really struggle. I've got loads of lyrics written down here, there and everywhere in my phone, but I'm no good at making the melody in my head. I just can't do it, but if you give me a little tune, I can make it fit. So he did that. I said, I want the pianos like the most important thing for me. I wanted that in there for like that retro kind of dance vibe. And then he sent that back and I then made my words fit. And then he helped me, obviously, with his experience saying, you know, this might work here and stuff like that. And then like I said, when we went to the recording studio, Mark, the guy there, he was really helpful. And he was like, what about doing a whisper? So it's one of those, like you get like the experience from everybody else. Oh, she did. I'm very lucky. Yeah. I'm a really lucky person. Well, you're not because you're making your own look, can't you? You're putting yourself out there. You're following your dreams, which is amazing, because a lot of people just dream. Yes. But you're not doing that, you're grabbing it by its horns and you're really ripping in there and cracking up. Well, I'm trying. I'm trying to do it. The way I see it is, you know, I don't want to keep saying about how... I'm not old. I know I'm not old. But to me, like you say, you've got a window. Yes. You've got a window and every day counts. And it was like with the singing. I said to myself, when you're on your deathbed, you're not going to look back and go, I'm really glad I never sung in public. No. You're always going to say, you're going to be full of regrets, aren't you? Oh, sure, yeah. So I just do it. And for me, luckily, it's worked out. People are so supportive. I shared the demo online and everybody's listened to it and gave them a good words. Because when you're listening to it over and over again, you're like, is it really bad? Or is it good? I don't know. You get stuck. Yeah. You get stuck in your like ways and you're a bit like, oh, I don't know. So then you put it out there and you sat there going, oh, no. What am I going to do? But luckily, all my friends are so positive and they've been really kind. And it's brought opportunities. So I'm singing live on Saturday night at like an event. Somebody wants me to go and do like a live PA. So that's all like a last minute thing. So that's good. Because then you sing into a whole new group of people. Because I sing live at like functions and pubs and stuff like that where I sing covers. But you do tend to sing to the same crowd. So it's nice to get an opportunity in a different town and things like that. Like I like that. Yeah. It's brilliant. That's really good. Right. Okay. Well, we're going to come back in a bit and we'll talk a little bit more about your shop. If that's all right. Yep. Of course. I was a young boy. My heart was open. You came in right away. You took my breath away. I wish I'd always held you closer. Back in the day I was so unaware. In a million ways you said you'd always be there. Because I knew in my heart I would wake up one day. In your hands. You've got the whole world in your hands. Well, I can't really finish this little hour without talking about this beautiful shop that we're in. I love how you've done it out. I love everything about it. But you know what also is a bit surprising? Is it a lot of men's stuff? Or is it unise? Some of it's men's. So when I started, I first just got ladies stuffing. But then when I get to know my customers, like, "You only do girls." So I started to do a bit more men's stuff. And I have got the experience in men's clothing. So it is a lot easier for me. The ladies was a bit tricky at the start. You don't know who's coming in. If you know from a purchasing point of view. But it's just trial and error. It's trial and error. But I've got, like, good brands in now, which is ARIA. So that's really popular with men and women. It's really good quality as well. But yeah, I like to be honest, I prefer dealing with men. They're easier. Yeah. Less fussy. Yeah, well, do you know what it is? Women, we have to justify our purchases. Whereas men don't. That is so true. I justify everything. And you would not believe how I can justify this. I can justify things. Goodness me. I am brilliant at it. I should actually have a degree in justification. I should. I've got to say, I'm loving the cowboy boots. Yeah. They're great. So, yeah. They're really popular. Again, I have, like, your fashion boots, which are, you know, started sort of 40, 45 pounds. Which should probably like your starter boots, I'd say. Yeah. So you don't want to invest. And, you know, some of them go up to, you like your areas and stuff. Can be a bit more expensive, like, between 100, 200 pounds. Some of them. But the proper leather, the quality, the technical, they've got, you know, the technical. The technical. How's the technical? Performance. They've got, like, certain things like a tech dump. The top dump. Yeah. Line dump, actually. Yeah, you just can program them. But yeah, there's a bit of something for everything. I try to cater for everybody, really. And you were saying, as well, that, like, people come in thinking that it might, you might have fancy dress things. But actually, it's all quality clothing. But then people buy it anywhere because they just fall in love with it. Yeah. That's true. I always try and get people, if they're saying they go into a one-off event, whether it's, and they'll say, "It's not really my thing." I try and encourage them to get something that they'll wear again. And save money on, you know, don't just, like, spend money for the sake of it. Get a nice dress and pair it with some boots or just put a Western Belt on or, you know, like a wild rag around your neck or a hat. You know, we all, and I always say to people and say, "I want a hat." And I take them to the mirror and get a big stack of hats and just let them try them on for fun. And I always encourage people to come in and just try stuff on, like, when I was younger, you used to go shopping on a Saturday with your friends and you'd go and try the lipstick on and you'd go to solid towns and our press and listen to the music before you bought your singles. Absolutely. You know, you might not buy everything, but I just, I want to bring that sort of shopping experience back for people. Oh, that's lovely because I am sick of buying everything online. Yeah. I love it because it's easy. But I don't love, I don't love not being able to go to it, touch it, smell it. Yeah. Try it online. Yeah. I love all of that. Such an experience. It's fun. Exactly. And it's the, like, shopping online, I'm guilty of it because you've got your filters and it's easy to find exactly what you want. Yeah. Like I do today. But like you say, you're touched up. I really like tactile. I like touching things. And I'm also from my hairdressing career. I'm big on colours and what people suit, which I didn't know I had this hidden superpower. So when people try things on, I make them try, when they get the style of hat, for instance, that they suit, and they can try every colour on because it can really make a difference. I didn't know I had that, but I've got that. I've learnt that this year. You see? You are actually a superstar, aren't you? I'm so proud of you. I love you. I love you. In the middle of the night, I don't walk in my sight. From the madness of fate, to the river so deep. I must've looked up for something, something to take that I love. But the river is wide, and it's too hard to cross. Even though I know the river is wide, I walk down and even it's never short. I try to push to the opposite side, so I can finally find what I've been looking for. In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep. Through the valley of fear, to a river so deep. I'm searching for something, something to take that I love. Something I've never used, something to take that I love. I don't know why I don't walk in the night, but now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore. I don't know why I don't walk in the night, but now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore. In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep. Through the jungle of doubt, to the river so deep. I know I'm searching for something, something so wonderful. When I can only be seen by the eyes of the blind in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep. Through the desert of the truth, to the rivers of the deans. We all end in the ocean, we all start in the streets. We all carry the love by the river of the greens, in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night, I go walking in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night, I go walking in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night, I go walking in the middle of the night. I go walking in the middle of the night. In the middle of the night, I go walking in the deep. Takes you back to dancing round in your tap shoes. Your mama's in the kitchen, your daddy's on the couch. Your brother's in his bedroom, his music a little too loud. I really wouldn't change a thing about my life right now. I just wish I could go back and hear you sing out loud. [Music] Dreaming little good. You really could take on the whole wide world. If you believe in yourself the way we believe in you will shine you. Just be you and your dreams will come true. [Music] You were always there when I needed you most. You used what you signed up for, but you didn't have to, I suppose. You've only got one life and family's what it's about. And if I didn't have you, I wouldn't be where I am now. I really wish I could thank you for teaching me about life. To go back to the house where the doors marked my hide. And I'd hear you sing. Dreaming little good. You really could take on the whole wide world. If you believe in yourself the way we believe in you will shine you. Just be you and your dreams will come true. [Music] [Music] Dreaming little good. What a beautiful song that was our lovely Georgia Barker who is a volunteer here at Ruble FM and she does our country hour on a Saturday. So thanks for that Georgia. I love that. But I'm enjoying having this like cow girly kind of afternoon. It's really good isn't it? Yeehaw it is. I can't tell myself. Black as you know. I was waiting for that. [Laughter] So from you do all sorts of ways to sell your clothes and what have you. What sort of ways do you do? Tell everyone. So because most of my customers are into country music not everybody because it's not all about that. But a lot of people are into country and they were so excited to have something like this on the doorstep because they always say 'I can't believe it's in Clitherall' and I'm like 'well it could be anywhere it's just that I'm here.' So we do get lots of singers and stuff like that. And to promote my shop opening I've traded at country music festivals. I was at the Winter Gardens in August for the British country music festival which was all indoors. So it was nice. It's safe isn't it that. You know it's not going to rain then and spoil everything. Because my first experience we went to this brilliant little festival over near Stockport called 'Bookland Boots' and it rained solid. It was like, I don't want to say it but it was that fine stuff that Soak she threw. [Laughter] And it never stopped. And these poor people were setting up the tents and were trying to build this easy up and everything. But the people that were there, the just brilliant people, the crowds. And even if you're not into country music it's so, it's non-offensive. It's a really nice like chill out type of vibe there. So I've done that and that I did one just last week. Just an evening, one country, one called 'Something Country' and I've been working with him. He's a local guy from like over Wigan, Lee Wayne. He's putting on these events now for people. Because like we say, the ticket's for events. You know, if you want to go and see a country artist now, they're just absolutely ridiculous. You know, there's so expensive. Very popular, isn't it? It's really in fashion. Everyone's in the cowgirlie around there. Absolutely. Which helps me a lot. Yeah, even I've got a pair of gold cowboy boots. Oh, well that's it. [Laughter] They won't be like Brian Woodward, but they don't have to be gold. [Laughter] Why not? Why not, I say. Yeah, two, right. Yeah. Yeah, it's good, it's really popular at the moment because of all the people in the charts. I mean the top 40's full of country artists. So when I think, I always go, I never sing anything from this century me. Because I like the old credence, clear water revival. Like the old stuff I like, the old folk rock and things like that. But now I can sing stuff from the top 40 because it's my kind of music. And people can join in then. Yeah. And the children. As in the younger ones. Yeah. But then it's one of those now. You still get your people coming in and they're like, "I like country before it was cool." You know? [Laughter] But yeah, these little events that are getting put on now are really good. Because they're accessible for people, your tickets are less than £20. But they get tribute acts on and they're playing really nice. You know, stuff you know, new stuff, getting everyone partying and the land dancing. And music is about having a good time. Of course it is. Do you have a website? I do have a website. So I'm online. It's cowgirlclaubin.co.uk. Oh, very easy. Yeah. Very. And I suppose you'll get all the information on the like your opening hours and how to buy things off you. Yep. That's right. Yep. Everything's on there. And I always do six people travel from outside of Clitherall. Just check Google for my opening times. Because sometimes when I go to a store, I have to close the shop because I take all the stock. Oh, do you? Well, a lot of it. The shop will be empty. Yeah. And then it's staff as well into a couple of friends. That's a big job for you though. It's a big job. Yeah. We're pretty good at events. So we've done it for a few years with the multi-cross. So we know kind of what we're doing. Yeah. Well, my husband does it all. Bless him. Bless him. Do you want to give him a shout? Oh, Dave, he'll be super. He won't even be listening because he'll be cringing. He'll be that embarrassed. Dave, you're a superstar though, she says. Yeah, it's multi-cross though. FYI. Oh, Fran, it's been lovely. Thank you so much for allowing us to come to your shop. It's been great. I really have enjoyed it. Have you blackened? Hi, haven't you? Yes, I've just been looking at all the stock and being there. So just amazed. It's like a world, isn't it? You know, it's amazing. It's great. So thanks so much. And good luck with everything. I really hope that you get to number one with you. Really single. That would be good. Well, that would be really good. Have you ever thought about going on X-Factor or something like that? Erm, no. Do it. No. Don't be led on your deathbed thinking, "Oh, I wish I'd gone on X-Factor." I always wanted to be on stars in the rise when I were a kid. I used to watch it religiously. And I just really wanted to do that. If they bring that back, I'll go for it. Let's see what we can do, shall we? Anyway, thank you so much for listening everybody. It's been an absolute pleasure here today. It's been a bit clearer. Cowgirl, clothing, company. I've got that all mixed up. It's been an iteration. Yeah, cook, cook, cook, cook. Yeah, done it all wrong. But hey, it's been nice. Come and check it out. I'm sure you'd like it. Have a lovely weekend everybody. And I will speak to you next week.
