[MUSIC] And a big hello again, friends. It is a great and beautiful Saturday morning of football Saturday. Right here as we welcome you to Southern Fairway Sports Radio presented by McConnell Automotive, the number one GMC dealer in the state of Alabama. They're located just east of I-65 on Dauphin Street in Mobile. You can check them out online at McConnellautomotive.com. We're broadcasting live from our Shrixon Studios today. We're located on the back veranda of Quel Creek Golf Club in beautiful Fair Hope, Alabama. I am your host, Randy Bergen, along with two of my favorite stooges. >> [LAUGH] >> I don't know where that came from. I'm sorry, PGAT professional and the director of golf. Our dog here at Quel Creek, Sweet Swing and Bobby Hall. Bobby, forgive me, I don't know where that came from. >> Well, you're part of the three stooges. >> That's right, that's exactly right. >> Hey, thanks for being here today, it's a beautiful day. We got the Men's Golf Championship going on with the Men's Golf Association here. Beautiful day, got a nice meal for them when they get done, so stick around doing some good things. >> I'd like to, we will definitely do that for sure. >> Yeah, they're playing for their annual club championship, so we'll see who wins today and have a lot of fun. But get outside, man, that's beautiful. I heard you on the porch report this morning, Barry, it was a nice brisk. I call it free air conditioning. Free air conditioning, absolutely, and boy, if you've seen my power bill lately, that's what I need is some free air conditioning. Of course I retired high school football coach, retired college football coach, Hall of Famer, a new inductee into the Moss Point High School Hall of Famer, good friend, Coach Barry Gibson here with us today. Coach, thank you for hanging out with us, not only for this show, but for the past two hours, the prep sports report. >> Oh, it's been a blast, Randy, I love coming on the show. Particularly like Bobby said, weather like this, get out, it's just great. Great, man, this is my time of year, but yeah, glad to be here. We're gonna have a fun show, looking forward to it. >> Yeah, there's no question about it. If we go any further, I do wanna remind everyone, let's say a prayer for all the folks that have suffered through Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. They need our prayers, our support, and if you can help, help. I've gone personally onto samaridanspers.org, the Franklin Graham deal, and went on there and made a donation. If you can help them in any way, please do. They're doing a wonderful, wonderful job, but certainly help. Those guys are in dire need, and Bobby, I know you've been kind of through that. We went through, and Barry, you as well. We went through Katrina here along the Gulf Coast. >> Yes, we did. >> Shoot, I'm so old, I went through Camille. >> I did too, yeah, I remember. >> I didn't wanna say that, but 1969. >> That's right, 1969, I was sitting in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and it blew everything away through social media. I was a sophomore at Mossfoyne High School and Mossfoyne when I came home. >> It encouraged hard, hit the Gulfport, flaps, and bolluxy. >> Yeah, but it sure did, no doubt. Hey, you mentioned the show, we have got a great show lined up for you. Coming up in the next segment, the director of instruction at the Country Club of Mobile. Ray Schusler's gonna be on with us now. We're gonna talk some golf with him, he'll give us some tips. Obviously, one of his clients, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, and now a five-time winner on the Champions Tour, Joe Durant. We're gonna talk to Ray a little bit about Joe and what the season looks like for him, and of course, golf is important to Ray, but football is too. And we're gonna talk some football with Ray coming up in our next segment. At the bottom of the hour, you will not wanna miss it if you gotta go do something. Now's the time to go do it, because at the bottom of the hour, you will wanna be on for the interview that we're gonna have with Shane Allen. Shane Allen is a new director of golf, he also, Bobby, is a dog, okay? At the brand new Cypress Creek, which is the old linksman, and what they're doing out there went out, I don't know, a week or so ago, and we got on the little gator, and he took me on every hole of this new layout. And, buddy, I'm gonna tell you, it's gonna be a neat track, really, really, cuz I know you played there quite a bit over at the linksman, and what they're doing over there is really, really neat. So he's gonna be on, we'll talk golf with him. He said he's got a couple of tips for us, and I know you do too, Bobby. But we'll also talk some SEC football with Shane at the bottom of the hour. One of the funny, funny dudes, I have no idea, I do have my finger on the button of the seven second button, in case I have to hit that button, okay? >> Right, Shane could have his own podcast, that's a good one. >> There's no doubt, of course, they will wrap up the hour getting you set for the upcoming SEC games for the day, and there's some good ones for sure. You got that Red River match up coming up Texas, and they're playing Oklahoma. Are they playing that in Oklahoma, or are they playing? >> No, in Dallas. >> In Dallas, that's what I was fighting. >> Kotten Bowl. >> That's right, yep, that's right. And I won't be by there not too long ago when I was in Dallas. We're right by the country. >> State fairs there. >> Yup. >> A lot of people come out for this thing. >> Yeah, it'll be fun, but we got a lot of ball games to talk about. And we're gonna throw in a little food as well, so it'll be, and I always say it's the fastest hour in radio, and it will be no doubt today as well. So we're excited about that. But Bobby, you got a lot of guys out here listening to us. What tip do you have as folks get ready to go out and play this weekend or this week? >> Well, it's helping a young man the other day, he was confused about putters. And just talk a little bit about putters and the way they're constructed. So when you see a putter that's heel shafted, sometimes the bend in the putter barrier, the shaft will run through the center of the putter, and it'll make it face balanced. Sometimes you'll have a heel shafted putter that makes the toe hang down. So you hold it by the shaft and you see if you have toe hang or if it's face balanced. And then you have putters like the old ping answer that have what we call a plumber's neck. It has that double-sided bend to it. And the reason that putters are made that way for two reasons, to face balance it, you can get a stroke pattern that's more straight back and straight through. If you have a stroke pattern that's inside out or on an arc, then you want a toe hanging putter, much like Ben Crenshaw in the back of the days when he played at the Masters. And when he played the tour he had that 8802 and had a lot of toe hang. So you want that arcing putter. So you need some second eyes to help you with your putting stroke. See what stroke that you're making. There's more straight back and straight through, go for face balance. And if you have an arc like the putting arc and you're inside on your stroke, you want something to toe hang. But also the second reason that putters are made with the different offset is for alignment very because your eyes will deceive yourself and you'll think you're aiming a putter a certain way. So sometimes you need more offset to get that putter online. Sometimes you need a straight in shaft to get your eyes set over. You need a second set of eyes, you need to go to somebody to help you get fit. Just because you pick up a putter that feels solid in the golf shop doesn't mean that's going to help you with your putting. You need to look at your stroke pattern and then go from there. Then you need to have your putter lined up and make sure you're lining it up straight at the hole. So get somebody to help you line it up, go to your local PGA professional, local teaching professional that has some experience in that and you'll find the putter that fits you. Just going in and buying something off the rack because it looks good is not always the best decision. So it's much like club fitting, get your putter fit to help you out. So there's your tip of the day, but take your time choosing the putter. I want to say two things about that. You said just because it looks good. My mother used to always say beauty is only skin deep, right? It's the same way with a putter, right? It may look good, but it may not be the right putter for you. The other thing is one of the things that you did, Bobby, this has been a while back, is you actually put a laser on my putter and Barry, he said, okay, now just aim at what you think is aiming at the cup, right? We were probably 10 or 15 feet away. I was so far right of the cup with that laser beam and my eyes are sitting there saying I'm dead in the middle of it. So something that's really, really neat if you have an opportunity. Let's get out of here and see Bobby. Come over here to quill. It's the best. And get some lessons from Bobby and get your game back on track. You know, Bobby, I say a lot of PGA guys changing putters, you know, and quite frequently. You know, I mean, guys that are really good putters, next week I'll watch them in trouble, they got a different putter, they're changing. So I do that as well. I change putter. But see, I have to because I throw a lot of them in the lake and I have to change putters. So you might want to get you an account out here at Quill Creek and just get on and get on. Hey, got to say Southern Fairways Golf Tour wrapped up the season last Sunday at Guffshores Golf Club. And I want to say congratulations to Chandler Milstead, the overall SFGT Cup winner, Coach Craig Andrews. He won the SFGT Championship. And I want to say congratulations to Colin Farrell for winning the Colonel George R. Hall Sportsmanship Award. Of course, Bobby, that that's an award that we put together based on your, your father seven and a half years as a POW. And the story is he played golf every day in his mind. And it's just a great story and so Colin was, we had a lot of nominees. But I think Colin certainly fit the bill. He sure does and congratulations to Colin and all the guys that play on the Southern Fairways Golf Tour. I appreciate you playing. We'll look forward to next year. Got Cup matches coming up, but yeah, thank you for the award and my dad's name. We certainly appreciate it. And yeah, when you're having a bad day, it's better than a day that he had in prison. Absolutely. In North Vietnam. So, you know, we all tell ourselves, we need to calm down and relax and enjoy the day and be a good sport about everything and Colin certainly fits that bill. So congratulations. Yeah, no doubt. We're excited about Team Challenge coming up. That'll be happening on the 26th and 27th and we'll do that over at Magnolia Grove. So we're excited about that. We've got to thank some of the great sponsors of the show. One of the thing, McCall Automotive Mitch and his whole staff there and McCall, they do a great job if you're looking for a vehicle. Go see Mitch. It's just no haggle. Was he say no shenanigans, okay? And they would take very good care of you. Also, thanks to Shrickson Golf, Boudreau's Cajun Grill, Matt, not here with us today. He is in South Carolina playing a little golf with his brother for about the next three or four days. So congratulations to him and I hope that you'll have fun. Thanks to David Musil over at Glenn Lakes Golf Club in Foley, Ben Murphy Roofing, Easter Shorts, or Toyota. And Hyundai, go see our friends out at Craft Farms Golf Course in Golf Shores. Also, don't forget about Peninsula, Anthony Vaughn does a great job over there. Thanks to Lisa Johnson Relder, Fair Hope Golf Works. Of course, Bobby, you here at Quarkree Golf Club want to thank the PSR Radio Network and Boom's tight kitchen. She's no longer the four. She is at the Pigly Wiggly in Fair Hope in that food court. You go see her, you're going to get excellent food and you're going to get a smile worth a million dollars. I'm not supposed to be a million dollars. Don't go anywhere. When we come back, Ray Schuster, the director of instruction at the Country Club of Mobile, he is up next right here on Southern Fairways Sports Radio. Hello, from beautiful Lake Tahoe, this is Brent Fair with Fox News Channel for your up-to-date golf and sports information news. Please continue to listen to FM-106.5 at Southern Fairways Radio Show with your host, Randy Bergen and sweet swinging Bobby Hall. Have a blessed day, keep a fair balance, and I'm afraid, and, by the way, roll back. From beautiful Lake Tahoe, who I tell you what I know, it would be beautiful right now, Bobby. Yeah, it sure is. This morning felt like Lake Tahoe. Let me tell you, Brett Bearer is a class act, and he's good on TVs, he's a good journalist and everything, but he is a first-class guy, he's a good family man, and we're not great friends but we're a friendship when we see each other at Tahoe, and he's just a great American, and I really like him a lot, so I appreciate coming up. And he's a pretty good golfer, too. Yeah, and he dresses well, man, oh man, he's in red, white, and blue, and he's a duck Sanders man, he's dressed to the hill, but anyway. Good stuff. Hey, we certainly welcome you back to Southern Fairways Sports Radio, Randy Bergen, along with sweet swinging Bobby Hall, hanging out with us. Here also is Coach Barry Gibson, the new inductee to the Moss Point Hall of Fame, and guys, here's a guy that I'll tell you, he needs to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Our good friend, the director of instruction at the Country Club of Mobile, Ray Schusler. Ray, how you doing, my man? Great. What a beautiful fall Saturday. It really is. I'm going to talk some golf with you, and then we're going to talk some football, because I know your heart's in golf, but boy, the other part of your heart's in football, and we're going to talk a little bit about that, but let's talk a little bit about some golf. What's going on? How's Joe Durant doing? And have you seen him lately? No, I have not seen him lately. We've been in correspondence through tech, obviously. He's still struggling a little bit. You got up to a good start last week and just didn't have it on the weekend. He was leading that first round and just didn't come together for the weekend for him. He shot 71-100 yesterday, and his putting appears to be holding him back a little bit, so hopefully I'll have a good weekend. They start their playoffs next week, as you might or might not know. Right. One of the things you're talking about putting, and Bobby gave a tip a few moments ago on putting it, the different, whether it be a center shaft or a heel putter, what is Joe using right now? He's using one of those lab putters, the new one that got the smaller head with the roundness on the back. A lot of tour players are using those putters right now, and he's had some good putting days, and he told me he loved it, but right now that putter's not behaving. Sometimes you've got to put them in the closet, you know? And you mentioned there, I think they're in North Carolina, Kerry, North Carolina for the SAS Championship. Yeah. But weekly's in there. Yeah. Yeah. He and he, welcome. They're going to, looks like they're going to make the first round of the playoffs next week. They go to 72 players after Sunday, top 72 in the Schwab standings, and then they cut to 50 after the second one, and then the last one they'll have a top 36. And Joe's, Joe's was 19th going into this week, so he's in good shape. He doesn't have to worry about making any of the, you know, cuts, he'll play in the finals. He just wants to finish strong, obviously. Sure. There was a nice, hey, Ray, Bobby Hall here. Hey, Bobby. How y'all doing? Hey, Barry. Hey, what's up? There was a nice article with Boo Weekly, and who's also from Milton Fore, I just forgot his name. Bubba. And he. And he. He's slow. Yeah. And that was real good. I think both at one's at 62 and one's at 63 on the list right now. So, yeah. Yeah. They play. Not with each other. Yeah, they sure did. Hey, that's quite a story. Not changing the subject, but he's slow comes daddy Jack was real instrumental in helping Boo get on the tour. Of course, his son. Have you heard from Jack lately? Where is Jack now? Jack. He came out. I saw him last summer over at Tiger Point. He was helping. He was just walking with one of our players in our section, in our senior section qualifier over at Tiger Point last year, a year ago. I haven't seen him since. Yeah. But he's still active and still teaching you. He hangs out at Brewton Country Club. I have a fellow that comes down and takes some lessons from Brewton Country Club, and he says Jack's still out there. So, as far as I know, I hadn't heard anything in a while. Jack was a good player, you know. Very good. Very good. Yeah. As you mentioned, Boo Busan Parkers playing on our tour as well, so we've had him out. And Tiger, how old is he? Yeah. I want to say he's in his mid to late 20s. Gotcha. Well, that's cool. But Tiger Point, it's a fun track. If you've not been over at the go see Troy, Troy's a big friend of yours, but boy, that's just fun. But we've been over there. We've had fun. Oh, man. I love that fun. Yeah. A good layout, good track. Yeah. A lot of fun to play. So, Boo weekly still play with that big water tobacco spin as y'all. I used to love to watch you play. Yeah. I always have a big child tobacco in that job that's spitting, playing golf. I said, "My man," I was like, "He's just a down home country boy, man." Yeah, there's no doubt about that. No doubt. Right. What is going on over at the Country Club of Mobile? It's kind of quiet today. Imagine that. Alabama goes 11, Auburn's off, got Francis, Maria and her dad. Maria's dad's out here. We're hitting balls, just working on a few things, and so it's been a nice morning. We generally get started about eight o'clock on Saturday and work with Maria and Francis and try to get their games as sharp as they can. So, that's what we're doing. Well, there's a Ray Schusler, director of instruction at the Country Club of Mobile. Ray, let's turn and talk a little football real quick. You mentioned Alabama. When they come on ABC at 11 o'clock, they'll be taken on South Carolina. They are in T-Town today. I got to go back and revisit that game last week against Vanderbilt. All Alabama fans here, SEC fans, Vanderbilt was ready. Vanderbilt played as about as flawless a ballgame as you could play. They had no turnovers. That offensive line protected the quarterback. Alabama just seemed a little confused defensively and, quite frankly, offensively. What thoughts? Well, you know, I was listed a show with Jack Crowe Thursday morning, you know, Wimp and Barry have a show out of Tuscaloosa. I like Barry entertaining. You know, anything Wimp's on, it's gonna be entertaining and no doubt. And they were, you know, Jack was talking about, you know, just, you know, you come off a big win, you know, Coach Gibson is familiar with that, I'm sure, you know, and they just, you know, maybe not quite as ready for the game. Who knows? He's not in the locker room. Upsets happen. Vandy's, like somebody else said, this is not your grandfather's Vandy. This is a different Vandy and that quarterback, he's a baller. You know, he came, that whole team came to play, you know, he just, it's sports. You know, upsets happen, hopefully they'll get everything we'll find out today. Hopefully they play better and have a nice rebound game and we'll go from there, you know, try to stay as positive as we can, Bobby. And I'll tell you, Ray, you're exactly right. One of the hardest things as a coach and, you know, I coached for 36 years. One of the hardest things is coming off a big win, you got things rolling and now you're getting ready to play a team that everybody tells you you should beat and trying to keep those kids motivated and get them up to a level to, you know, to go out there and play. It's one of the hardest things that is, I don't know what it is, it's on every level, high school, college and pro, when you're going against a team that you think is terrible, you just don't give it that effort and coaches try their best to tell you you better look out. Well, Alabama, you better look out. Let me ask you this, though. Go ahead, Ray. Well, what I was going to say, I was worried going into the game because I was very aware of Coach Kim and his background being a great coach and the quarterback, you know, New Mexico went in and beat Auburn last, and I was thinking also the stadium atmosphere. I mean, you're playing, you know, Georgia the previous week at night in an unbelievable atmosphere and these young players, you know, they get in there and it's almost like they play in a high school game in that stadium. Right. That's right. That's right. And I'll tell you what, it was the perfect storm, the Vanderbilt's offense, the triple option isn't an option that, you know, it's an offense that you can be bigger, better athletes with, you know, because it's hard to defend. And they ran it to perfection and it was the perfect storm in the game plan. Alabama just had a really hard time stopping their offense without offense. Barry, I think, I think too, we had Coach Phil Lassaby on the prep sports report earlier today. And one of the things that he does, he runs that double that wing tee option and a lot of times before the misdirection because his players are not as big as the opponents and it keeps him misdirected. And I think that's exactly what Vanderbilt did and they did it to perfection. You got to give them kudos. And you know, sometimes Ray, you and I were talking, sometimes you got to have a loss to kind of wake up and say, hey, guys, we're good, but we may not be as good as we think we are. Sometimes we need to play a little harder and we'll sort of see how they rebound against South Carolina here in just a little bit at 11 o'clock. Right. We're visual ratios to director of instruction at the Country Club of Mobile. Ray got about another minute here before we let you go. You got to give us a big old golf tip. Big old golf tip. So what I'm working on, what we're working on right now with Francis is trying to get her take away. You know, golfers can at times get up, you know, from the time you start the club to about where the butt end of the club gets past your, say, your trail leg. Let's not say, let's talk to righties and lefties. You don't want to see the wrist doing anything where it's rolling the face open. So I would say a great drill for that is to maybe put a ball on the ground right behind your club and just smoothly brush that ball back. Okay. So we're trying to make sure Francis is safe doesn't, she has a tendency to get a little open right at the start of the swing. So we've got a two by four, you can put a ball behind it and just trying to feel, you know, a one piece takeaway has been a saying forever. So, you know, a great LPGA player that does that drill. Nelly Corda. Yep. Sure does. There you go. Hey, you go. Hey, Ray, always good to hang out with you, brother. Look forward to talking with you again real soon. Have a great Saturday. Good to hear from you all. Thanks for having me. All right, buddy. Ray Schuster, director of instruction at the country club of Mobile. We'll take a timeout. When we come by, you will not want to miss Shane Allen tees up next. I'll just get ready. Oh boy. Hey, now, let's take a look. Welcome back to Southern Fairway Sports Radio as we're broadcasting live from the veranda on the back porch here at Quirk Creek Golf Club in beautiful Fair Hope, Alabama. Glad that you're on board with us, no matter where you are on the Gulf Coast, the state of Alabama. All of you folks up there in Birmingham, I hope you're doing well and glad to have you here with us. I am Randy Bergen, joined by the director of golf here at Quirk Creek Golf Club. He is the dog, sweet-swinging Bobby Hall. Bobby, I was good to have you here, brother. Good to be here. Glad you're here in a beautiful day. Get outside and enjoy the weather. Absolutely. Hall of Famer. Barry Gibson here with us as well. Barry, so far so good. It looks like you do have your seatbelt buckled, because we're about to bring on next. You better buckle up, man. You got it. Glad to be here. Glad you're here for sure. Let's go to our Shrickson guest line of welcome and a good friend of ours. He is also a dog, director of golf at the brand new Cypress Creek in Mobile. All right, good buddy, Shane Allen. Shane, first off, congratulations. Your daughter got married last night. Yeah, Randy. We had a great time last night, you know, it's been a while for me, as far as that atmosphere. I had to break out some old dance moves, and I'm paying for it, but I'm not a problem. I'm waiting on someone waiting to be at hall, but I haven't heard from you yet. So, that's right. Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness. Okay, Shane, let's talk about, let's talk about the brand new Cypress Creek Golf Club. The old linksman for all of you that played in Mobile years ago, I was fortunate if you took me on the gator and we went through every hole out there, and I got to tell you, this is going to be a neat track. Let's kind of break it down, kind of tell folks a little bit about some of the changes you're making out there. Yeah, Randy, we, Mobile County bought this property a couple of years ago. We bought on Jerry Pate designed to do the design force. It's got a few of the same holes, the same footprint as there, but you hit the nail on the head, people are not going to recognize this golf course. Steve Dana, the lead architect for Jerry Pate did a great design, moving some land, getting some of the tea boxes, fairways and greens out of the water, because as you know, that course used to stay pretty wet. That is not going to be an issue now. We're going to have several holes that are going to look like Eileen Green's that we've built up and just the overall playable experience of this golf course is going to be second to none in the area. It's really, really neat design. Hey, Shane, Bobby Hall here, War Eagle. Wow. Thank you, Bobby. As bad as the phone started yet, man. Yeah, we're waiting for baseball up at Southern Miss. Yeah, really. But anyway, tell us a little bit about the grasses that are going to be coming in. I'm sure you do, and Tifthorff and your fairways, but what are they planning on putting on your greens? Yeah, so we've got Tif Eagle going down on the greens, Bobby. We already have the entire practice facility is shaped up. We're waiting right now. We're kicking around the idea of maybe throwing some winter grasses out there just to get some grass on the tea box of the driving range, so I can start teaching there. But Tifthorff, we're going to use Zoysia on a couple of tea boxes because they stay in the shade most of the day, and then, man, it's going to be really, really neat, man. You need to come over and see it. Absolutely. I do need to come over there. I hope you'll show for me around like you did Randy. I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, you don't want to walk in. Let me tell you something. Of course, let's spread out. Bobby, let me just, let me just go ahead and say this. Seriously, you need to buckle up, okay, if he's driving, buckle up, okay, oh my goodness, I'm like, it's one of the things that's really going to be neat as well there. Once you get to clubhouse, you're going to have, was it three different putting areas that you're going to have? Yeah, yeah. So we've got three different putting rings. So Commissioner Dewitt, his kind of vision for this entire golf course and practice area, he wants the high school kids in Mobile County to have a place they can call their own. So the high school kids will have their own designated area on the tee box and they'll have their own designated shipping and putting green. So the cool thing about the putting green dream is kind of like I was showing you, we've got one with a green side bunker, but we've also got a bunker. You can hit fairway bunker shots out into the range. So that's, that was something pretty cool that Steve Dana came up with and I love that because there's not a lot of that in this area at all. We're visiting with Shane Allen, the director of golf at Cypress Creek Golf Club in Mobile, the old Lynxman and excited for you because I think it's really going to be a neat track. Fairly easy to get to right off Hall's Mill Road on what they call River to Shane. Is that the name of the road? Yeah, right off River to Shane and then you'll kind of weave through the neighborhood like he did, you know, where you came the other day where my construction trailer is. Now that's where the driving range, we'll have tennis and pickleball. So I'll probably be a pickleball champion before too much longer for Andy because he's not what I have to say. Make sure you get a good ice machine for all those ankle and knee injuries. We got your last December, so don't worry I won't be able to play you and pick a ball up wrong. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. Hey, Shane, let's turn real quick. Let's talk a little football. Alright. Do we have to read? Do we have to read really? Well, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to kind of soften this for you a little bit because I'm going to start out talking about Southern Miss with Barry and Bobby and then we're kind of easing over. Okay. Southern Miss right now only has one win. They got UL Monroe in Monroe Funro, Louisiana. That game at four o'clock on the ESPN plus today. Barry, your thoughts on this? Well, can I interject? Yes. First base. With these last years, I'm going to start. Yeah, Coach. UL Monroe is like four in one. So, yeah. No. They just beat James Madison. You know, who just put 70 points on North Carolina. I hated that. My good friend, Mac Brown, who coaches North Carolina was my wide receiver coach at Southern Miss. So Mac and I have a very close friendship, but so James Madison put 70 points on North Carolina. From 70 to 60 or something, 50. And then they come back and then Louis, you know, Brian Vincent is a head coach. And, you know, we all know Brian very well. He took my place in Spanish Fort when I left. They beat James Madison, huge upset. And so now, here we go. Southern Miss has got to take it on, you know, Monroe, who just beat James Madison. It's going to be one of those days. What has to happen? I mean, so the Miss certainly in this area, as many, many fans, Barry, you played football there. Bobby, you were an All-American cheerleader there. What has to happen? That's the true change. That's true. I like it. I like it. I'm going to have to get you to try that two, two on for me one day. I still got one hanging in my closet. You know, you can't get rid of old memory. Oh my gosh. What has to happen? Well, two things, in my opinion. You've got to have the right coach in which, personally, I don't think we have right now. And then, number two, recruiting. You know, I think Southern Miss has done a poor job of recruiting. Now, with the transfer portal in play, you know, we did pick up some pretty good players through the portal. I think they need to continue to do that. But that's it. They have got to get the right guy in there, his head coach, and they've got to hit the recruiting trail and get some athletes in there because they just don't match up right now. You know, with the teams that they're playing. And so you've got to be able to get those kind of kids. And like you said, Randy, Southern Miss had a per years, a reputation of a team that really nobody wanted to play. There were that team that, you know, you played, but you're going to end up being sore the next day because they're going to hit you. We were real physical over the years. And we upset some big schools like Nebraska, you know, in Florida State and Alabama. And we used to be that team and we're not that team anymore. You know, we're just one of those cupcake, you know, type teams that everybody plays and expects to be. We got to get over that. We got to get, we got to get some, the right guy in the several years of really, really good recruiting Bobby. Don't you believe it? That's right. And years ago, Shane, when we had the nasty bunch and Barry was playing and we had Jeff Bauer playing and some of the all-time greats that were there, you didn't have South Alabama and you didn't have Troy at the top of the list. We were always recruiting against SEC schools in Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU, Alabama and our backyard. Then, you know, junior college football was big in Texas and in South Mississippi, there's a lot of Juco players that are really good. And now all of a sudden, everybody turns to football for making money. And South Alabama built the hell of a stadium. And now we're recruiting against them. And these smaller schools are starting to pick some of these good high school prospects. I remember the coaches coming down here through Barry. They would go down to Fort Walton Beach and got a lot of kids from the Panhandle of Florida. Well, they're getting recruited by everybody else. And now with NIL and the money, Southern Miss with our alumni base really never had the funds in the past to stay up with the Florida State. One time, we could compete with Florida State head on head. Absolutely. But those schools kept those alumni coming and the funds coming in and we just didn't keep pace with that. And then we start losing in the recruiting atmosphere. We're trying to pay a coach now. It's just ridiculous. And so we're just not, they were going to be that team in the top of the division. So let me take that and segue this in to Shane real quick. Okay. With Auburn. Auburn has plenty of money. Auburn does NIL. Auburn uses the transfer portal. All right. What is the problem right now at Auburn, Shane? I don't know if it's, you know, I don't think it's a player issue. You know, they, like you just said, I mean, NIL money is flowing up at Auburn. That's obviously this recruiting class. They're putting together, if they keep it together, it's going to be one of the best in Auburn history. And I just don't know if it's just so many young guys and they can't go on the same page. I mean, obviously quarterback is an issue. I know Coach Freeze was big on taking, going into the season. I would, and again, I've never coached football a day in my life, but I would have loved seeing them go get somebody at the transfer portal. And maybe that would work better. You know, who knows? I just think, I know, again, I don't think it's a player issue. I think maybe some of the young guys up there and they, they haven't totally bought in. Well, it's going to be interesting because, I mean, you, you look at Auburn had their first five games this year were at home. And out of those five games, you kind of expected to win, if not all five, at least four of them. Okay. And you only won two. Yeah. You only won two. So you've got, now you've got the weekend off, but you'll come back next week and you'll take on, you'll take on number 21 Missouri. Yeah. You'll have your hands full there. What's that? Yeah, there's no doubt. I mean, the rest of their schedules, you know, they have to go play Missouri. They play Vanderbilt, which obviously we don't want to see the quarterback from Vanderbilt ever again. He was the one who was ready to make a coach. Auburn never had a chance to win that one. I was like, wow, what? You know, this kid's a little five, ten and a wrestler and all I'm like, dude, come on Rick Flair. Get out of there. He's Johnny Manziel-ish, if you will. He absolutely is. You know, and then I was thinking maybe A&M might be a winnable game, but what they did to Missouri last week, I just don't see a whole lot of wins left on the schedule for all. I really don't. And I tell you, Shane, I believe the problem, I think, is it starts with the quarterback. It already has to have a quarterback. You know, they have the pieces in place, I think in all the other positions, but you've got to have that guy at quarterback. Now look at Texas. You know, they got doers. He goes down. So who goes in? Manning. Manning. Auburn's got to get to that point, you know, not just one quarterback, but two, you know, that's ready to go. And that's where it all starts. And they don't have that. Coach, again, like I said, I've never coached football and I'm sitting here thinking, why not put in the Walker White? Is he that far from being ready where you're getting, at least getting some game reps now? Because this season, if they win five games, nothing better. But Walker White was supposed to be, you know, he was a great recruit, four-star. That's why a lot of these receivers came there was because again, he had anything to see. I guess maybe that's where I got me scratching my head as well. I agree. I agree. It's going to be interesting. It's going to be interesting. All right, Shane, as always, it's fun to have you on. We're looking to have you on more. When are you going to be opening up Cypress Creek Golf Club Mobile? So Randy, our target date was this fall. Obviously, we've missed that window as far as getting grass out. So it'll be next spring before the range opens. And Mid-America Golf, the company doing my golf course, men, they've been rock stars. They are about four to five months ahead of schedule. So we're looking at, you know, if the weather keeps cooperating next summer, this golf course will be open as well. Well, we're excited about it. Bobby, Barry. I'll be there. I'm going. I'm taking you over there. Yeah. Shane will be doing the moonwalk when it does. Absolutely. Absolutely. Oh, boy. Shane, you're a mess, man. Thanks for hanging out with us, brother. Look forward to having you back on. Randy, you Bobby Coach, thank you so much for having me on. All right. You too, buddy. Shane Allen, director of golf at the brand new Cypress Creek Golf Club in Mobile. Let's take a time out. When we come back, we're going to jump into SEC football. We'll break down the games for you right after this. Hey, get her done. You know what this is? This is Larry, the cable guy. And you know who you're listening to? That's right. Randy Bergen on Southern Fairways Radio Show. And if you're not listening to him, you're a communist. These boys are good. Now, that's good. Absolutely. Absolutely. Hey, we certainly welcome you back to Southern Fairways. Glad that you are here with us on a beautiful, beautiful Saturday afternoon. If you have an opportunity, get out and play some golf. Come over and share our good friends here at Quill Creek. Till, Bobby, you were listening. And who knows? Bobby might even give you a discount. I always give discounts. You know what? Hey, Bobby, why don't you do this? You want to give away a round of golf or something? Give a round of what? Four. Four rounds. It's a green fee to a caller that calls in. I'm calling. And tells what my middle name is. Oh, goodness. It starts with an "S". Okay. Here's one of my favorite trivia questions. Who won the 1969 U.S. Open? Look it up on Facebook. Oh, gosh. Trivia, look up the 1969 U.S. Open winner. Call in with his name. And you give four rounds of golf here. Wow. And the course is in great shape. Here's the phone number, 2513430106. 2513430106, by the way. If you have an opportunity, go on and get the free FM Talk 1065 app. It's really good. You can actually do a -- you can record a message. We can play it on there. You can text on that. You can take us anywhere you go. You can listen to podcasts, to different shows. A bunch of good stuff. Go check it out. But the answer, we're going to have to text to Steve. I don't know. Maybe the winner. Just theory your phone real quick, then call in. The 1969 U.S. Open winner. He played a lot of golf with my dad. Oh, I know who that is. I know who that is. Okay. I can give you the initial. See him. No. One him? No. Oh, okay. Wrong one. Wrong one. Okay. I don't have a clue. Oh, him. Oh, him. That's right. Oh, him. That's right. Okay. Four rounds of golf out here to go up. It may have been the highest score ever to win the Open. Like plus one or plus two. Oh, wow. They said the rough was so bad. And Trevino picked him the week of the tournament. He said this guy's going to win right here. Trevino. Trevino picked him. He's one of my favorites twice. He sure did. And this guy and Lee Trevino played military golf against each other. Wow. Yeah. In the military. There you go. Two, five, one, three, four, three, zero, one, six. And if you know the answer, then you're going to get four rounds of golf here at Quill Creek. That's awesome. With cart, okay. Oh. Barry, I'm giving you the name. I'm writing it down for you right here. Why don't you start dot set? He did not win it. I think we do have one. We'll get that for you here in just a second. But we're going to break down some SEC games coming up for you in just a little bit. But Bob, before we get into that, what you got going on out here at Quill Creek? Oh, man. We got a lot going on. Of course, we're having the men's golf association tournament today. We've got the Quill Creek Civic Association as an event coming up. In November, we've got nights at Columbus. Monday morning this Monday, we've got sand crab seniors. The senior league out of Pensacola comes over to play. They got over a hundred players. Golf course is in good shape. Just a lot going on with the weather cooling down. The greens are really, really getting good. We've got some good news that hopefully next year, we have Shane Allen about what kind of grass they're going to be planting. And they're going with the Tiff Beagle. And hopefully in the next year, we'll be shutting down nine holes and redoing our greens here. Also with Tiff Beagle. It's easy. Wow. Right now, we have Tiff Dwarf in our greens. And it's time to have them redone and put in a new putting surface, which will be really good. Tiff Beagle is very common down here now. And most of you are really good golf courses. Rock Creek just went to it. You want to take the heat down here? That's correct. And the golf course is down on the coast. And the blade of grass is finer. It's not so thick. Like this Bermuda we have here. So it'll make the ball roll a lot better. So we're looking forward to all of that. I need all of that. We have new carpets, new carts, the cities behind the golf course. You're doing really a lot out here. If you haven't been out here lately, you've got to come out and check it out. Oh, it's a different place. It's really a good shape. There's no doubt about that for sure. So we do have a winner. A coincidentally, the answer was... Orville Moody. Orville Moody. Well guess who won, guess who won this? Who? Danny Moody from Australia. So Danny, I don't know, maybe there's some family in there. I don't know. It's meant to be. Yeah. So good stuff Danny. We'll get those... Bobby, get in touch with you and get you those tickets and everything. Okay. So congratulations. Thanks for tuning in for sure. All right. We've got a few minutes left here. Let's talk a little... Let's talk a little football. Today you've got Alabama's going to be cranking it up here in just about seven minutes. So we've taken on the Game Cocks of South Carolina in Tusk Lucid. That's on ABC. We'll certainly be watching that for sure. Bear your quick thoughts on that ballgame. Well, I've always felt like you don't want to be that team to play Alabama after they lose. A tough one. Because they come back the next week. Usually, they play really, really good. So South Carolina better get ready. Because I think Alabama's going to come out motivated because of what happened last week. But really, really angry. They're going to be an angry team ticked off. And so I don't think this game would be close. Really, as good as South Carolina has played in spots. They're not consistent. And I think if Alabama comes out and jumps on them early, they'll run away with it. Well, they've won three ballgames. They've lost two. They lost LSU and they lost to Ole Miss last week. 27-3 the final on that. Of course, they've got Alabama. Next week they'll have Oklahoma. There's no easy stretch for them right now. Right. Then they've got Texas A&M Vanderbilt, Missouri. And then they'll wrap up with Clemson. So they've got their hands full for sure. It's going to be a tough road for them. It's going to be a little Riker Road coming into T-town thinking you're going to get the win. Especially after Alabama's loss last week. So I agree with you. Yeah, I don't think you're going to roll into Tuscaloosa and win because, you know, Vanderbilt did. You know, beat them last week. All right. Let's go to Bobby, your quick thoughts on that. Do you have any thoughts? Oh, I'd better be careful. I mean, Alabama's let down. I hope they come back and win in South Carolina. Still a strong team. What's the, do we know what the line is? The line on, I think, is Alabama was giving up 21, 21 and a half points in the line? Yeah, 21. A bit about right. Which is what it was against Vanderbilt. So, yeah. So let's not list that. Jakes that. That's going to be close. Let me ask you about this. All right. Missouri travels over to Massachusetts to be playing. This is a game on ESPN. Yeah. I think Missouri kind of rolls through that game. Okay. It should be. Then at 2.30 today, you got the Battle of the Red River, right? You got Texas ranked number one in the nation, taken on number 18, Oklahoma. That will be at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Bobby, I'll start with you. Well, I got to go with Hook 'em Horns. My friend, John Drago, and I think the Horns will write them out. Well, and I agree with you on that for sure, Barry. Well, this is one of those rivalries. You just throw the, you know, out the book, whoever the favorite is. I do think Texas is the best team in the country right now. You know, and they should be favored to win this game. But I have seen over the years, this game, Texas, Oklahoma, where the underdog wins so many times. So, I would not be surprised if Oklahoma upsets Texas. I don't think they will, but don't be surprised. I think Texas's defense is a little too tough. The offense certainly is very strong. And what you said a little bit ago is the fact that Texas has, they've got some depth, they quarterback. All right, so if yours goes down, you can put arch in there, and the beat keeps right on the same beat. All right, for Oklahoma, I think it's going to be a little bit of a tough day for them. Although somewhat neutral, what they're calling neutral ground, you're still in Texas. All right, so it's kind of like a home game. I'm going with Texas on that one. All right, so at 3-15, Mississippi State rolls into Athens to take on the Bulldogs. Number five, Georgia. Mississippi State, not playing well this year. I think it's a no-brainer. Georgia wins that. I think there are 34, they're giving up 34 points. Mississippi State Bulldogs going in to play the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia's Bulldogs is going to be bigger. State's Bulldog, and this one, a little bit better. All right, here's one for you, Florida. It goes up to Knoxville. They're playing a needle in the stadium, taking on the volunteers of Tennessee, a place that you're very familiar with. Barry, you got still wearing the old Tennessee SEC Championship ring. That's right. I've got to go with my voles. They've got to go in there. I know they had a heartbreak last week, but again, you know, that's the motivation to come back this week and play even better. Their offense is just really, really good. So, I think they're going to win, particularly in Knoxville. Yeah, I think they're going to play some points. Yep. I'm looking forward to watching that because Florida played well last week, so the Napier being on the line and all that. I think it's going to be a good one, but I'll go with the Vols. Yeah, I think, look, Eiffel's got that, and Ukelele the quarterback. Yeah, I know this. Ukelele. (laughter) I think they're strong. You're definitely going with Tennessee on this one. Then you've got the Ole Miss Rebels rolling into Baton Rouge to Tiger Stadium, taking on those Tigers ranked 13th. Of course, Ole Miss is ranked 9th, LSU is ranked 13th. Anytime you play a night game in Tiger Stadium, it's going to be tough. This is on ABC at 6.30 tonight. Bobby, you and I were there not too long ago when Alabama rolled in there and got that win, but boy, it's a tough place to play. I'm going to go back in history when Billy Cannon ran the punt back and scored. So I think it's going to be a barn burner. I think LSU is going to pull it out just because they're at home. Missed game in the day. Oh, that game right there. Ole Miss, LSU. Yeah, that's going to be the one to watch. Best game in the day. Let me tell you another one to watch. Watch the Vanderbilt Kentucky game. Yes. Absolutely. They've got to go to Lexington to have that ball game. That's a 6.45 on the SEC. So I'm going with a Vandy on that one. I'm on the other one. I like to watch it. That's two. I'm on go. I'm going to roll with it, baby. Hey, Barry, thank you for hanging out with us. You'll be back with us next week as well, right? Yeah, I will, brother. Very good. Bobby is always man. Thanks for hanging out and hosting us today. Thank you for being here. Come to Quail Creek where we have a game for everybody. No doubt. I want to thank our producer Steve Stanley for keeping us on the air, pushing all the buttons, and thank you for tuning in. All right, till next week, I'm Randy Burg and let's say a prayer for all those folks. Hit by those hurricanes. Amen. We will see you next week right here on Southern Fairway Sports Radio. Bye-bye, everybody. (upbeat music)
